Ramesh Jagannathan, project director for the Durham Rapid Transit Office, explains that a bus rapid transit (BRT) route is a higher order of bus transportation compared to what currently exists in Durham. Buses on the Hwy. 2 BRT route would run more frequently, at seven-and-a-half minute intervals during peak times, and would use technology such as signal priority, which would give buses green lights along the route. This allows for faster, more efficient trips than on regular bus routes. An example of BRT in Ontario is the VIVA sys- tem in York Region and Mr. Jagannathan explains BRT can be a precursor to a light-rail system. Durham’s first BRT route is slated to run along Kingston Road covering six kilometres in Ajax and Pickering. “It makes sense that you would start from Pickering to Ajax because those are the six most congested intersections we’re targeting,” said Mr. Jagannathan. The intersections along Kingston Road include Whites Road, Liverpool Road and Brock Road in Pickering and Westney Road, Harwood Avenue and Salem Road in Ajax. Right now, the Region is conducting an envi- ronmental assessment for the project, which would see a road widening and third, bus-only lane, added heading in each direction along Kingston Road. The third lane would be on the right side and cars would use it only to make right turns. The preferred option also includes bike lanes and sidewalks along the route. Bus-only lanes proposed for Hwy. 2 PLAN CALLS FOR EXTRA LANE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS IN AJAX, PICKERING RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND AJAX -- Looking west on Kingston Road in Ajax Oct. 26. There are plans for Ajax and Pickering to get bus rapid transit due to the level of existing congestion on Kingston Road in those two municipalities. The plan is for a third bus-only lane in each direction on Kingston Road. Shame on councillors Bill McLean and Jennifer O’Connell for playing politics by trying to push their choice of a name for the Hwy. 401 walkway on the rest of coun- cil. So much for working together as a group. The point isn’t that their name, the Vet- eran’s Walkway, is a poor one. Quite the opposite, given our collective high regard for our veterans and the fact that the walkway crosses the Highway of Heroes. Rather, it’s that they unsuccessfully tried to rush discussion through at the end of a council meeting and then used City of Pickering letterhead to press their point, starting the release with “On Monday, October 17th, Pickering Council voted to refuse to consider naming a pedestrian bridge Veteran’s Walkway.” To suggest that other councillors were somehow against the name and that there was urgency to have the bridge so named in advance of Remembrance Day is ridiculous. Not having the name, if it ends up being chosen, in place in time for Remembrance Day would certainly not be a slight to veterans. Mayor Dave Ryan, rightly, said naming the bridge wasn’t something to be done hastily and arbitrarily. “I think this is a wonderful idea and I’m not opposed to it, but I think many people may have ideas for naming the bridge,” he explained. The mayor noted he’s received other suggestions from the community, includ- ing calling it the Bicentennial Bridge to mark the city’s 200th year. Like Veteran’s Walkway, it’s an appropriate name that deserves consideration. The crucial point, as the mayor said, is that the City can’t just go ahead and name the walkway what it wants. “This bridge is not ours, it belongs to Metrolinx,” Mayor Ryan said. “The best we can do is to request that Metrolinx consider naming it something. Even then that request has to go off to another body for consideration, which could take many months. My question here is, what’s the rush?” To answer him, there is none. But some council members saw this as an opportu- nity to make their peers look bad. Spokesman Malon Edwards told the News Advertiser Metrolinx GO Transit would be “happy to develop a naming process that will fit the needs of the com- munity, stakeholders and local govern- ment. We do realize that local communi- ties and government officials may want to provide suggestions on the names and we are happy to work with them.” The key word is process. In that context, some councillors’ drive to have a special meeting on the issue is clearly jumping the gun. It’s the same old divisiveness and play- ing politics on council. Enough already. It seems teachers are getting mixed mes- sages on whether they should be friends with their students on Facebook. On the one hand, in the spring, the Ontar- io College of Teachers issued a rare advisory report recommending they avoid connect- ing with their students through their per- sonal social media networks. The advice said teachers should refrain from Facebooking, tweeting, e-mailing and texting students. The college reasoned that communicating through social media blurred the boundaries in a teacher-student relationship and if things get out of hand, it could result in teachers facing disciplinary or even criminal consequences. That seems pretty cut and dry. But a recent survey of more than 7,100 high school students by the Ontario Stu- dent’ Trustees Association found that 61 per cent thought it was acceptable to connect with teachers through social media. Here’s one comment from a student included in the report: “I absolutely think that this would be a great way to involve students! Using social media would be relating more to students and even if it is just to hand in a project it becomes much more exciting to hand it in to your teacher over Facebook than ... in class. It could also be a really cool way for students to share work if there was a way they could all connect socially.” Toronto Star education reporter Kris- tin Rushowy writes that the Toronto police department’s social media officer recently advised teachers that connecting with stu- dents on Facebook allows them to build relationships with youth, prevent crimes and even teen suicides. That leaves the question, shouldn’t teach- ers do everything they can to reach a diffi- cult-to-reach student? When it comes to bullying, these days it often occurs online through Facebook and being friends with a student could tip a teacher off that a student is having a particular tough time. Given recent news here in Durham, we need no reminder that bullying could have deadly consequences. Still, the same survey that found that stu- dents want to connect with their teachers through social media also found that par- ents aren’t so hot on the idea, with 58 per cent saying it was unacceptable. And Ontario isn’t the only place strug- gling with this issue. Last summer, the state of Missouri enacted a law banning teachers from friending their students on Facebook because it was deemed inappropriate con- tact. But just this month lawmakers reversed course after teachers complained it was unconstitutional and infringed on teachers’ free speech rights and interfered with their ability to educate. Instead the state is asking all school boards to create social media policies. So it seems there are no easy answers on this score, but compromises including interacting with students through Facebook pages as opposed to friending and teach- ers creating work-only Facebook accounts for their classroom interactions that don’t include any personal information. Only time and experience will reveal what the best option is when using social media in the classroom. Are you a Durham teacher grappling with the issue of social media in the classroom? Let me know what you think. --Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Thursday in this space. On Oct. 20, a man drove to Dur- ham Region, planning to meet a person he thought was a 13-year- old girl he communicated with in an online chat room, the OPP report. When he arrived, the man was arrested by police officers waiting for him. On the same day, police execut- ed a search warrant at a Markham home and a computer contain- ing evidence of child luring was seized. Lionel Tauro, 34, faces two counts of luring. He was held for a bail hearing and was released. He’ll appear in a Newmarket court Nov. 15. In addition to Durham, other forces involved include the OPP child sexual exploitation unit (Project P), and the York Regional Police. poliCe Markham man facing luring charges after Durham arrest durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • October 27, 20118 P Mr. Jagannathan said the other alternatives considered included doing nothing, BRT lanes added in the centre of the road, and the third lanes being high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes which would have allowed car- poolers to use it as well. But the decision was made to pursue an option that gave the most priority to buses, hence the bus-only lane that could be used by BRT and GO Transit. “Every car that’s on the transit lane is poten- tially delaying the bus,” he said. There will be two bottleneck points along the route where Kingston Road cannot be widened. One is located in Pickering Village in Ajax and the second is in Pickering at the CN rail crossing between Fairport Road and Dixie Road because the project budget does not include rebuilding the railroad crossing. When BRT is expanded to the rest of Dur- ham there will be other bottleneck points such as downtown Whitby. “If you’re a com- muter taking the bus all the way to Scarbor- ough Town Centre from Oshawa if you have to share the lane with other vehicles for about two kilometres, its not the end of the world,” said Mr. Jagannathan. The Region has budgeted $100 million for the project, which is expected to be complet- ed by the end of 2015, and of that $82 million is funding from the Province of Ontario which will cover the road widening, property acqui- sitions for the widening, upgraded shelters, any necessary technology such as the signal priority technology and two buildings, includ- ing a depot to house the additional buses and a transit control centre. Once completed, the BRT route will replace non-express GO bus service along Kingston Road. As it stands, Durham pays GO a $4.04 per rider subsidy for the service. Public information centres are currently running to educate residents about the plan. One was held last weekend in Ajax and there will be one held at Pickering Town Centre on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The information centre will be located on the second floor on the north side of the mall. As well, residents can submit their comments about the plan online by visiting durhambrt.ca. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish sees the introduc- tion of BRT as a way of relieving road conges- tion in Ajax and said he’s hoping to see more and more residents opting for it as opposed to their car. “I think some residents will say, no that third lane should be open to mixed traffic for use by cars, but I think people have to remember what we’re trying to do, we’re trying to solve a transporting and gridlock issue.” He said no matter how many additional lanes of road are added for cars, it’ll never be enough as drivers will demand more. Mayor Parish said the BRT proposal means residents can use whatever form of transpor- tation they want, including public transit, cycling, walking and driving. “The advantage for the car driver is less cars on the road.” Page 6 - Today’s editorial Ajax & Pickering Locations 279 Kingston Rd. Silently in the night it moved in and made itself at home. When I went downstairs to put on the coffee first thing in the morn- ing, there it was in the living room. An elegant orange spider with white-striped legs and a big black triangle on its abdomen. He? She? -- was hanging upside down in the centre of an exquisite dinner-plate- size web, the fine lines of which gleamed silver in the rising sun. I’m always putting spiders out- side the house, everything from big wolf spiders that fall into the kitchen sink overnight, to fat-bel- lied little ones that crawl around our houseplants, hopefully catch- ing aphids. But I’ve never had a lace-doily web literally hanging in space above the coffee table -- or anywhere else inside, that I recall. Gingerly, I bent close to study both the engineering and the engi- neer. A long strong line dropped from the ceiling on a slant, attached to two “guy ropes” extending to oppo- site edges of the table. The fine spi- ral -- I counted 56 threads, like tree rings -- hung vertically from this simple scaffolding. I discovered that I could walk all around the table without disturb- ing the web; except for one attach- ment on the ceiling and two on the table, it seemed to be freestanding. My German great-grandmother, remembered to this day in my fam- ily as the perfect hausfrau, would have grabbed the broom and swept our visitor, web and all, out the door. With apologies to her, I decid- ed to leave it alone and see what might be caught in this fisher’s net. As far as I could tell, not much. I’ve heard that spiders reweave their web every night. And the next morning there was a section of broken threads that suggested a skirmish might have taken place, but no other evidence of a success- ful hunt. Meanwhile my husband respond- ed to my idea about trying to feed it fruit flies, and set a dish with a can- taloupe rind near our visitor. It was disappointingly unproductive. The morning of day five, I raced down the stairs, to find our beau- tiful little spider had packed up and gone, taking its spiral webbing with it. Two days later, the “bridging thread” disappeared, too. By that time I had gone online and learned how a spider does that: drops down on a strand of silk half the strength of steel, then crawls to one side, to tighten and attach it on a slant. By hunting through many web- sites and spider photos I deter- mined that our visitor was a female cross orb weaver, a common gar- den spider of Europe and Asia, introduced to North America. People tend to associate them with bad luck, and often times, they simply get passed up because they don’t usually show up well in photos, or tend to blend into the shadows in cages, Ms. Richards explains. “Whatever the reason, generally we always have way more black cats than any other kind of cat,” she says. I can say from personal experience that my black cat has brought me nothing but joy. Henri greets me at the door when I come home, she curls up next to -- or on top of -- me on the couch, and sleeps by my feet at night. She’s also the first to greet me in the morning. “They generally do make very, very loving companions,” Ms. Richards agrees. They tend to be social, playful and loving, she says. “We find here in the shelter especially a lot of our black cats are extremely social,” she says. After doing a rough head count, Ms. Richards says there are about 25 black cats at the humane society. They make up just under a quarter of all of the animals at the shelter. And the dogs don’t fare well either. One has been there since February, and another since May. Although the humane society wants these lovable creatures to find forever homes, it puts a halt on cat adoptions the week leading up to Halloween. Since cats are associated with Halloween, people will often get them on a whim, much like those who adopt bun- nies around Easter. Special occasions are not the best time to adopt a pet, Ms. Richards says. “We want the animal to be the special thing going on in the home at the time,” she says. Disturbing abuse reports regarding cats several years ago prompted the shelter to hold off on adoptions until after Halloween. “We knew anyone who was serious about adoption would wait, and anyone who wanted to get a cat just to do something nasty to would just leave,” Ms. Richards says. Jet’s Second Happy Halloween FUNdraiser is on Oct. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. Instead of presents for her birthday, Jaclyn Holdsworth will accept dona- tions from the public for the Second Chance Wildlife Sanctuary, in honour of her black cat, Jet. The Durham District School Board approved Scugog Trustee Carolyn Morton’s plan to create an ad hoc committee in order to reflect on, explore and make rec- ommendations on extreme cases of aggression and violence. Trustee Morton noted at the Oct. 17 board meeting that in a recent student survey, 85 per cent of participants felt safe, meaning 15 per cent feel unsafe. She did note the board is making strides in addressing school safety issues, but said she’s still uncomfortable with the numbers. “We’re doing good work in this area, but if we can do better, then I think we have the responsibility to do so,” she said. She said action is needed with- in the board to address issues of human rights, and to protect all individuals within in the schools, whether they have disabilities, are of different ethnic backgrounds or belong to the lesbian, gay, bisexu- al, transgender and queer com- munity. She also noted recent reports on the growing number of men- tal health issues among kids and teens, specifically those making the transition from high school to university. Health & Wellness ADVERTISING FEATURE It's a fact that Canadians are living longer today than ever before—and while this is great because we'll have more time to spend with loved ones—it's a bit alarming from a finance and savings perspective. Data suggests that retirement years have stretched from 13 to 20 years—or a 54% increase. This means that a propor- tionate increase in savings is required to ensure your savings can fund the retirement lifestyle you had in mind. How can we fund this longer retirement? “The easy an- swer is either through an increase in contributions, or higher returns on your investments,” says Bob Gorman, Chief Port- folio Strategist for TD Waterhouse. “However, in reality that can be dif- ficult: people have a natural tenden- cy as they age to make lower-risk investments, which can reduce the chances of higher returns.” Getting an early start on retire- ment savings and making regular contributions is probably the best way to ensure you have savings in place when it's time to stop work- ing. Bob Gorman offers tips to get started—or to help maximize your current retirement investments: Make sure you have a plan. Know what your goals are and determine what financial steps are needed to get there. An experienced financial advisor can help you build a custom plan suited for your personal situation, as well as help you manage it. Contribute regularly. Monthly contributions can help you reach your total annual contribution goal. Investigate tak- ing advantage of payroll deductions for an RSP if offered by your employer. If short of funds, consider a loan for your RSP contribu- tions. The tax deferred compound growth on your invest- ments could potentially outweigh the interest costs. Evaluate your investment portfolio regularly. Analyze yourasset allocation and assess if it's appropriate for your re- quired return, time horizon and risk tolerance, as well as if you're on track to meet your goals. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your an- tiques, collectibles, gold and silver. During a show nearToronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt.“I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for jewellery she was never going to wear anyway. Expert Elijah Gold explains,“We have no- ticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added,“The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewel- lery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!” At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grand- the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare. Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 QueenVictoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. She explains,“I never would have thought that my old tin afford to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued,“Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”. Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow.Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. LionelTrains and a variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is look- ing for one of your collectibles, they can always make an offer to buy it. A man brought in a 1950’s MarxTinToy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. They were able to locate minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for hisToy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Road- show, they will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket! Reid’s early second-half goal kept James Madison in first place in the league standings and also gave Dukes’ head coach Tom Martin his 450th career victory. James Madison upped its overall record to 10-2-1, and the Dukes are now 6-1-0 in league competition. The Dukes, who won for the sev- enth time in their last eight games, are tied for first in the CAA with Old Domin- ion, which also has a 6-1 CAA record. Reid’s game-winning score came 14:11 into the second half after a flur- ry of James Madison shots in which the Pickering High School grad put a rebound of his own shot into the net. An honours’ student throughout his time at Pickering, Reid finished with an 82-per-cent average when combining all his classes from Grades 9 through 12. Those marks led to receiving an aca- demic scholarship. Boxing Cook perfect in the ring ajax fighter improves to 3-0 with unanimous decision BraD Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Brandon Cook followed the game plan and recorded his third professional victory in a row on Saturday night at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The Ajax resident remained undefeated after scoring a unanimous decision over Darren Fletcher, now 1-2. All three judges scored the fight in favour of Cook 40-36, 40-36 and 39-37 in the four round super middleweight bout. “I thought I did pretty good,” said Cook, who is a member of the Motor City Boxing Club. “I followed the game plan to move forward a lot and keep the pressure on and it worked. But I couldn’t knock him out. The guy was strong.” Cook, 25, was in control from start to finish, aggressive in the early rounds and continuing the pressure throughout, bloodying Fletcher up in the last half of the fight. His trainer at Motor City, Don Nelson, was impressed. “Brandon showed some real improvement from his previous fights. He kept a steady pace throughout the fight, clearly dominating every round. His boxing skills were more polished and he was very composed in the ring.” In critiquing his own performance, Cook said he is continuing to improve as he learns the pro game. “This time I thought my performance was a lot better,” he said. “I was a lot more calm, relaxed. “Every time I train I try to bring my training up to a new level, so every time I get in there, I’m always in better shape and working on new things.” While all of the details haven’t been finalized, Cook expects to be on a card Nov. 25 in New Brunswick for his next fight.
