July 26, 2011 The above statement is from a news arti- cle on July 26 on durhamregion.com. It has now been a full year since this issue came out in another newspaper. What have you done to follow up? There has been no report on their finan- cial statement. How much do they spend on their fund- raising activities? The CEO was obviously in a conflict of interest and there should be an inquiry that is open and begins right away. Get to it. John MacDonald Oshawa election A vote for the Liberals was a wasted vote To the editor: Once again we have ended with a Con- servative candidate winning in Oshawa although more people voted against him than for him. When will people realize that a vote for the Liberal party in Oshawa Riding is a wasted vote? The Liberals don’t even run serious can- didates in the riding and the only thing vot- ing Liberal does is split the anti-Conserva- tive vote. Coral Petzoldt Oshawa commuting No GO parking results in ticket To the editor: I discovered a crazy thing the other day. I am a new student up in Peterborough, and I have chosen to travel by GO bus. The only problem is that when I leave later in the day I cannot find a parking spot at the Oshawa GO train station. My only recourse was to park illegally if I wanted to take the bus. I first thought I might get a ticket, but then I thought they would not be so mean. After all, I am giv- ing them business. The end result? I received a $100 ticket. How can GO lack the foresight in cre- ating the necessary parking spaces. At the Whitby GO train station they have built a multilevel parking lot, but in the Oshawa GO it is a disgrace. The trains and buses should promote their own business, as well as taking cars off the streets and highways. I’m not sure what I can do about this yet, but I can say I am disgusted at the situ- ation. Brad Hogg Oshawa nutrition Share land to help feed those who can benefit To the editor: Re: ‘Enjoy the fruits of your labour in Uxbridge’ news, durhamergion.com, Oct. 6, 2011. I want to thank the durhamregion.com for an excellent article on the gardening program the Salvation Army started one and a half years ago to assist families with home-grown vegetables. Our gardening program was started so young families liv- ing in apartments and seniors could work together and share their fresh produce from the garden. Finding a location with all the right ser- vices was a problem until we introduced apartment residents to seniors who are liv- ing in their own homes and have a garden. We are most grateful to Sara Reid who stepped forward to offer her in-town gar- den to Millie, so now both Sara and Millie have fresh produce to serve. This coming spring we will be able to give out garden plots at Uxbridge Public School. The Salvation Army will continue to take the names of those who want to gar- den and those who have a garden to create partnerships in the sharing of fresh pro- duce. While many of us on Monday probably thought of our spouses, children and fam- ily in general, all certainly worthy, it's amaz- ing how many people take their health for granted. The ability to get on a bus or walk down the street without a second thought is something for which we should be grateful. But what about those in our community who have physical or mental challenges? It's easy to forget that a segment of our population has a lot more to consider than being on time when they have to get to an appointment. To make the general pub- lic aware of accessibility issues, the City of Pickering is hosting its first Accessibil- ity Awareness Day in conjunction with the Rick Hansen Relay on Nov. 5. Speakers and groups are coming to the Pickering Town Centre to raise awareness of the issues faced by members of our disabled community. Among them are Robert Pio Hajjar who, on his website, ideal-way.ca, notes that when he was born with Down syndrome, "the doctors told my parents to put me away and forget about me. They said I would not be able to walk or talk or do what other kids do. They painted a very sad picture of what my life would be like." Instead, Mr. Hajjar has led a fulfilling life and is a motivational speaker. Also coming to the PTC are Paralympian athlete Tracey Ferguson, a member of the Canadian Women's National Wheelchair Basketball Team. There will be a Lions Foundation Guide Dog demonstration, Durham Regional Police children’s games and a musical per- formance by singer/songwriter Justin Hines. At 11 a.m. the Rick Hansen Relay team will arrive, followed by medal bearer Donald McCafferty. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and combines exhibits and presentations. Not many years ago, as Mr. Hajjar's story shows, many of us considered the disabled to be not capable of much. We didn't see the person, but the disability. We've learned so much since then. A per- son's disability no longer defines them, it's just a part of who they are. And the incred- ible obstacles such people are able to rise above and conquer aren't just an inspira- tion to the disabled, but to the population in general. One look at what Terry Fox accomplished and the legacy he left behind is enough to prove the point. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • October 14, 20117 PDurham kitchen & bath 124 BROCK ST. The primary goal is to raise money, I have kids so children’s charities mean a lot to me, but I also have a lot of fun doing it. If I only had five kids come every year I’d still do it for those five kids.” Mr. Wurzer generally works on the dis- play evenings and weekends throughout October, and varies it from year to year to keep people on their toes. This year will revolve around an enclosed haunted path through the backyard of his home. “Before I lived here I was in apartments or places with small yards so I never had the opportunity to do something like this, and I think part of me always want- ed to,” Mr. Wurzer says. “It’s fun for me. It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun and it’s a challenge.” Mr. Wurzer won’t give too much away about this year’s event, but says in the past reactions have varied from terrified guests running away down the driveway to people complaining the display wasn’t scary enough. When it comes to new innovations, Mr. Wurzer has a lot of help from friends and neighbours, as he lives in a community that boast several annual haunted hous- es. He also credits O’Flaherty’s landscap- ing for donating corn stalks and other props that he uses in the display. “There’s a good little community of haunters out here,” he explains. “We share ideas and help each other out. People should keep their eyes open because there’s a lot of good plac- es to visit in Pickering if you want to be scared.” Mr. Wurzer will be hosting his annu- al haunted house on Halloween night, Monday, Oct. 31 beginning at 6 p.m. at 1438 Parkham Cres. in Pickering. Following a period of healing it will act much like the root of a tooth over which a crown will be placed. Implants can support a single crown, a long span bridge, a loose denture or rehabilitate an entire dentition. Chief considerations for the successful placement of dental implants are the amount and quality of jaw bone. With modern advances, most people are candidates for dental implants regardless of age or health. Dental implants are considered long term restorations and provide excellent results that are comfortable, natural looking and high functioning. Dental implantology is dentistry’s most rapidly growing field. The Pickering Town Centre launched the weekly market on July 26 in response to continuing requests from customers and will close it for the season on Tues- day, Oct. 18 with a Halloween Harvest Festival. Lorna Murphy, marketing direc- tor of the Pickering Town Centre, said the market has so far exceeded expectations. “From the get-go we’ve been busy,” she explained. “We’ve been really steady with traffic and a lot of our vendors are selling out every week. It’s been hugely successful, we’re really proud of our little gem of a market.” Items for sale include local produce, baked goods, honey, art, bread, coffee, organic medicines and jewelry. Since it began, the mar- ket has already expanded to include several new vendors, such as Brooklin’s Hy Hope Farms, and further additions may be instituted next year. “We decided pretty early on we wanted to continue next year,” Ms. Murphy said of bringing back the popular market, which will begin a month earlier next year, in June 2012. “We always knew there was an oppor- tunity for this type of market, but it’s still been pretty overwhelming. Next year we’re going to look at adding some new things. We might have more items for sale, such as fresh eggs and cheese, and we’re thinking about hosting bake-offs and engaging the com- munity through a recipe share.” As part of a partnership with Pickering Cares, a food drive set up at the market has resulted in more than 1,600 items being collected for local food banks at St. Paul’s United Church and the Salvation Army. A push is being made over the last weeks of the mar- ket to increase donations in the run-up to Thanksgiving, with a free reusable fashion bag offered to anyone who makes a dona- tion of $2 or more to the food bank. “Thanksgiving is a really busy time for food banks and we want to help them as much as possible,” Ms. Murphy explained. “Food donations are great but I know the food banks can get better deals so some- times it’s better to give cash.” To thank the community for a success- ful season, the market will wrap up with a Halloween Harvest Festival on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 2 to 7 p.m. Children are invit- ed to dress up for some early trick or treat- ing and families can enjoy a petting zoo with animals from Windreach Farms, live entertainment, crafts, psychic readings, henna tattoos and more. The event will be a fitting wrap to the market’s inaugural year. “It’s not necessarily a festival every week, but it’s always festive,” Ms. Murphy said of the market. “We’re certainly looking for- ward to next year.” coMMuNity Celebrate Halloween Harvest at Pickering Farmers’ Market PICKERING -- Shoppers check out local products at the Pickering Town Centre Farmers’ Market. The self-taught, award-winning artist says he paints “everything,” but at present his focus is on land- scapes and riverscapes. He is among the artists demon- strating how they work at the Ajax Creative Arts Fall Art Show and Sale, Oct. 14 to 16 at the Village Community Centre in Pickering Village. It’s easy to understand how he comes by his favourite subject matter. “When I grew up here it was the country and we literally grew up right on the Rouge Valley,” Cox says. “It was like living up north somewhere. You saw deer and rab- bits and all sorts of stuff. And my dad was a real outdoorsy guy, he hunted.” As well, an older brother painted and Cox remembers his paintings lying around and the smell of tur- pentine in the house. It was natural for him to take up painting and, as he admired wild- life artists such as Robert Bateman, his subjects were animals. While he still does an occasional animal painting, Cox says they’re not as popular as they once were and are a tough sell at galleries. “If I was going to paint wildlife now, I would try to paint it in more of a looser, more painterly style,” he says. “A lot of it became illustra- tion... and I think that’s why it’s lost its appeal.” Cox says he came to paint out- door scenes, but minus the animal. Most of his subject matter is within 20 minutes of his house, with Duf- fins Creek, the Seaton Hiking Trail and Heber Downs favourite spots. He’s painted some scenes over and over again, but in different seasons and with different light. “I’ve always got my camera with me,” he says. “I basically try to compose a painting through my camera. I’m always thinking of the light; light is the inspiration for pretty well all the paintings I do.” Cox deals with four galleries, three in Ontario and one near Bos- ton, and hasn’t shown his work at an ACA show in awhile. But he’s a club member and a regular at the bi-weekly painting sessions for art- ists the club holds, often spending eight hours a week at the club. “To me, it’s a great place to go,” he says. “First of all, for me it’s a little bit noisier here (at home) during the day. You can kind of bounce your ideas off people there and people look at your work and you can get feedback.” He says fellow ACA members at the sessions aren’t shy in offering criticism and Cox likes the camara- derie, noting being a full-time art- ist can be “a lonely profession.” While the schedule wasn’t set at press time, Cox plans to be at the sale and show demonstrating how he works on Saturday. He plans to work on a number of small paint- ings. Google his name and you’ll find a number of sites showing his work. The ACA show hours are Oct. 14, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Oct. 15, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Oct. 16, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Village Community Centre is at 22 Sherwood Rd. Last year, the team won the U16 national championship, and this year they went back-to- back, copping the U18 title with a 3-2 decision over St. Hubert of Quebec at the tournament held over the Thanksgiving weekend in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Two titles in two years but three celebrations? Well, the first celebration this year was a little premature. “It was kind of funny,” said head coach Dario Gasparotto in setting the scene in the final seconds of Monday’s nation- al championship game. “The coaches were all looking at their watches. The ref had blown the whistle and we thought it was the end of the game and actual- ly rushed on to the field, only to realize the game wasn’t over and quickly had to rush off. “It was kind of comical.” Ajax got a pair of goals from Shawn Claud Lawson and another from LeShaun Young in the championship game, lead- ing 1-0 at the half, and going up 3-1 after Quebec tied the game early in the second half. A late goal by Quebec pulled them to within one, but Ajax prevented an equalizer. “It was tense because it was a really close game. They were throwing everything at us,” said Gasparotto of a Quebec team that lost its only game of the sea- son in the final to Ajax. “There was just a lot of satisfaction after. Yes, we won it, but it was more how we won it. The kids played at a different level than any other team that was there.” Ajax won the U16 national title last year, but because Ontario would have had a difficult time sending an U18 team to the national championships due to school commitments, it was decided to send this year’s U17 provincial champions in Ajax. They benefitted from the deci- sion and made the most of it. Ajax made it through the round robin unscathed, opening with a 7-1 win over Mount Pearl, NL, then battling to a scoreless draw with SWU Premiers of Alber- ta. They blanked Saskatchewan Unidad 9-0, and needing a win to advance to the gold medal game, wrapped up the round robin with a 4-0 victory over Nova Scotia. “Going in, having seen the teams, I thought that would be our toughest game,” said Gasp- arotto of the game against Nova Scotia. “I went out and scouted them the day before and knew we were in for a battle.” Ajax and SWU Premiers fin- ished tied in their pool, but Ajax was given the nod on goal differ- ential. With a couple of days to reflect on a journey that began as coach of this particular group as an U7 all-star team, Gasparotto put it all in perspective. “It’s funny how quickly you come back down to earth,” he said. “There’s this big high and then boom, it’s over. Now it’s regrouping and seeing what that next challenge is.” There are a couple of U.S. show- case tournaments in Decem- ber the team will be attending, hoping to secure some scholar- ship offers for more of its play- ers. So far, five players have com- mitted to Division I NCAA pro- grams, including LeShaun Young (East Tennessee), Kyle Crich- ton (Northern Illinois), Shawn Claud-Lawson (Oakland Uni- versity in Michigan), Nicholas Axhorn and Jordan Dover (Win- sconsin-Green Bay). SuBmitted pHoto AJAX -- The Ajax FC Strikers won the U18 national championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick over the Thanksgiving weekend, beating St. Hubert, Quebec, 3-2 in the gold medal game.
