In 2009 the day care, which has operated at the corner of Valley Farm Road and Finch Ave- nue for more than 40 years, was left hanging as officials considered whether to expropriate the property for the planned Southeast Col- lector Trunk Sewer, which will take the major- ity of sewage from York Region to the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant for treat- ment. In April the day care received notifica- tion that the property was no longer under consideration for expropriation. “It’s a huge relief because for two years we didn’t know if we were going to have jobs and some parents left because they didn’t want to be scrambling for day care if we ended up closing,” said Donna McManus, supervisor at Valley Farm, which has the capacity for 95 children, from infants to 12 years. Grow op partner went to police JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- A frazzled Jason Rodgerson tried to conceal the aftermath of a violent confron- tation with a young woman in his Oshawa house, a witness has testified at a murder trial. Stephen Roberts testified Tuesday he found the Bloor Street residence trashed and Mr. Rodgerson evasive about what had happened the day after he’d been surprised to find a woman he didn’t know in the house the two men were using as a marijuana grow opera- tion. “He wasn’t giving me any answers,” Mr. Rob- erts testified. “He would start to talk but he’d only say two or three words and then stop.” Mr. Rodgerson, 28, has pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder of Amber Young, 21. The young mother’s body was found in a shallow grave in the backyard of the Bloor Street house a few days after she was reported missing in October 2008. It’s alleged she died after leaving a Ritson Road South bar with Mr. Rodgerson. Mr. Roberts said he was angered to find Mr. Rodgerson and Ms. Young at the house on the night of Oct. 26, 2008, fearing the grow op in the basement would be revealed. He said he found the house in disarray and Mr. Rodger- son and Ms. Young apparently stoned. When he returned the next day to check on the property, Mr. Rodgerson prevented him from entering the main floor of the house, he said. “He caught up to me and said, ‘Don’t go up there. You don’t want to be part of what’s up there’,” Mr. Roberts said. Mr. Rodgerson said he’d been stabbed in a fight with the young woman and asked for a shovel, Mr. Roberts said. The encounter left him with a feeling of dread, court heard. “I believed her to be dead,” he said. Dogged by his conscience, Mr. Roberts went a few days later to a police station where he told cops about the grow op and his worries about the young woman. Officers executing a search warrant quickly found Ms. Young’s body. The trial, before Superior Court Justice Bryan Shaughnessy and a jury, continues in Oshawa. I was a student at York University and work- ing at my campus paper. Our office had just gotten a new set of computers, all iMacs in rainbow colours such as blue, orange and green. It was the first product with the now famous “i” before its name and the com- puter I would work at on a regular basis was hot pink. Talk about judging a book by its cover, I was probably judging the computer by its shell but none the less, those neon colours made a strong statement to me and every- one else that this company was doing things differently. At the time, I had no idea that Steve Jobs had recently returned to Apple and those personal computers would be the first step towards Apple becoming the biggest com- pany in the world. Later, it was on my MacBook that I found out about the death of Mr. Jobs and to my iPhone that I turned to see the reaction on Twitter as the news spread around the world. And the reaction was huge as people mourned the death of a genius whose inno- vative ideas changed the way we live our lives. He didn’t do anything he could have won a Nobel prize for by making a medical dis- covery or learning one of the secrets of the universe or bringing peace to a war-torn country. What he and his company did was change the way we communicate with each other. And as a social species, that has a bigger impact on our daily lives. While I knew his products well, before his death I knew little about Steve Jobs as a person and it was fascinating to see the reactions to his death from others who have built our technology-centric world includ- ing his competitors such as Bill Gates. But the man who drew the strongest reac- tion was software freedom activist Richard Stallman who wrote: “Steve Jobs, the pioneer of the computer as a jail made cool, designed to sever fools from their freedom, has died.” He further wrote “As Chicago Mayor Har- old Washington said of the corrupt former Mayor Daley, ‘I’m not glad he’s dead, but I’m glad he’s gone.’ Nobody deserves to have to die -- not Jobs, not Mr. Bill, not even people guilty of bigger evils than theirs. But we all deserve the end of Jobs’ malign influ- ence on people’s computing.” That’s a pretty harsh statement, but one that prompts some discussion and some thought and it launches the first set of debates on what Mr. Jobs’s legacy will be. And perhaps the greater question is will Apple as a company retain the magic now that its visionary is gone. Remember, Mr. Jobs’ talent wasn’t cre- ating a product to meet a demand in the market. It was creating products we didn’t know we needed until they launched. Of course the final question is will there ever be another Steve Jobs? While Mr. Stallman likely hopes not, it’s almost inevitable and like Mr. Jobs we cer- tainly won’t see them coming until they change the world. Contact her on Facebook, Twitter (@rszekely) or e-mail at rszekely@durhamregion.com Reka Szekely Reflecting on the legacy of Apple visionary Steve Jobs Durham College partnerships build a strong foundation The link between small business and stu- dents at Durham College remains vital as students graduate from various programs and make their way into professions and services. That link is now stronger with new part- nerships announced last week between several businesses and the college that will see undergraduates take part in applied research, engineering design, technolo- gy development and product testing and certification. Along with forging stronger bonds between the college and potential future employers for college graduates, the initiative reinforces Durham College president Don Lovisa’s view of students as the “best trained and job-ready.” Whether the research involves students in skilled trades and apprenticeships, elec- trical technology or environmental pro- grams, the partnerships will provide them -- and the participating businesses -- with vitally important experience that relates directly to their fields of study. Businesses taking part will also be able to recognize the best and brightest the college has to offer, potentially leading to that all-impor- tant first job for many of the graduates. Credit is due to college officials for rec- ognizing the importance and continuing to build these links in the business com- munity, and to the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontar- io for providing the necessary funding -- up to $750,000 -- to launch and maintain the initiative. Small and medium-sized business pro- vide much of the fuel in Ontario’s eco- nomic engine. While uncertainty remains regarding global economic health, every single student who takes part will gain invaluable job experience to serve them well in the future. And by taking part in this initiative, businesses benefit from the energy, creativity and innovation that drives Durham College undergrads and which can help them expand market share, introduce new products, improve processes or identify efficiencies. The businesses already on board with the initiative are excited about the oppor- tunity it represents and recognize the set- ting of a strong foundation for similar partnerships going forward. Engaging a wider spectrum of businesses to join the initiative and exposing still more under- graduates to the private sector will further prepare Durham College students for the bright futures they envision. Indeed, it will help to ensure that, as Mr. Lovisa notes, Durham students are the best trained and job-ready. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • October 13, 20117 AP Bonus Air MILES ®reward miles offer: Conditions apply. The idea of a new building was great but we would have been very sad to leave this property.” After learning they would be able to remain at the property, which features a large backyard backing onto a forested area, staff quickly set about catch- ing up. “It’s nice because we had a lot of projects that needed to be done that were put on hold,” Ms. McManus said, noting that both the driveway and the playground area have been resurfaced this year. “But it was really more of a relief for parents and staff. We wanted the neighbourhood to know because I think we lost a lot of potential families.” On Friday, Oct. 7 staff and children came together once again to enjoy the day care’s annual Thanks- giving lunch, noting there was much to be thankful for. “It’s a little more happy this year because we know we’re here to stay,” Ms. McManus said of the tradition, where staff and students enjoy a tradi- tional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, mashed pota- toes and vegetables together. “Some kids have siblings at the day care but they don’t see them because they’re in different rooms according to their age. I’m so lucky to be able to write about nature every week, the colourful birds, bugs and butterflies read- ers might see on a walk along Durham’s many trails. Focus- ing on the boundless life going on around us is so positive, as is the fact that more and more of us are getting out in every season, enjoying woods and wetlands where wild creatures dwell. That municipalities are pro- tecting chunks of wildlife habitat as development unrolls across the landscape is perhaps the best legacy we’ll leave our grandchil- dren. That they’re creating sys- tems of trails where we can get away from cars and noise and pollution is a brilliant move, pro- moting both physical and mental health for everyone. These days planners even talk about creating wildlife corri- dors so that deer and foxes and cottontails can make their way from one natural area to the next, instead of being stranded on islands, cut off from the rest of their gene pool. With all the good news going, I hate to mention the bad news -- that even when we love a special area enough to go to bat to pro- tect it our enthusiastic enjoyment of it can have serious impacts on its wild inhabitants. For example, frogs and toads being mashed on our trails, inadvertently run over by cyclists. I don’t want to point fingers, but it’s hard to imagine some walker treading on a frog without it leaping out of the way. Whereas a swift moving bicycle could come upon a frog so quick- ly neither rider nor amphibian might have time to avoid each other. I walk a stretch of Durham trail every week with friends and nearly always come across one or two recently flattened frogs that will leap no more. Earthworms and woolly-bear caterpillars are one thing; the fact that, planet- wide, our amphibians are in such serious decline makes me cringe whenever I see a frog run over. I didn’t see any smashed snakes on the trail, as I did last year, but found a young garter snake dead on the road near the parking lot. Another casualty I found flat- tened last year was a milk snake, a species at risk in Ontario. At the moment, the Town of Whitby is working on a new plan for their waterfront, one end to the other. There’s talk of “twin- ning” the trails there for the safe- ty of increasing numbers of walk- ers and bikers. I would like to encourage them, and planners throughout Durham Region, to widen a trail where necessary -- at a blind curve, or approaching a hilltop -– and paint a yellow line down the centre, instead of actually running a second strip of asphalt parallel to the first, doubling the death trap. And it would be great if they could cre- ate a wildlife corridor stretching from Corbett Marsh to Cranber- ry. Durham outdoors writer Margaret Carney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far-flung corners of the planet. He is the last of 127 birds that were removed from a house fire in Fenelon Falls in February. “There were over 300 animals in the home,” says Ruby Richards of the Durham Humane Society The owner surrendered the ani- mals and the Durham shelter ended up with 10 cats and 127 birds. Seven months later, all have found homes, except for Jamie. “He’s the last to go,” says Ms. Rich- ards. Ms. Richards says she’s not sure why Jamie hasn’t been adopted yet. “He’s a very pretty bird,” she says. Maybe it has some-thing to do with the defect in his eye, and people may think he’s been injured, Ms. Richards said. But the veterinarian used by the Humane Society believes he was born with it. Caring for a dove is “very, very easy actually” she says. They’re mainly cage birds but some people will clip their wings and allow them to walk around in a secure area. “They do like to have a flat surface to walk around,” Ms. Rich- ards says. T h e y also like to perch, she says, and they’re actually very good at being held. They don’t sit on shoulders the way a par- rot does, but they don’t mind being picked up and petted. “A lot of them respond well to that,” she says. All they need to eat is dove mix available at any pet store, with the odd berries thrown in. They can be quite loud, however, and Ms. Richards doesn’t recom- mend someone who prefers a quiet environment to take Jamie home. “Doves do make a lovely soft coo- ing sound, which some peo- ple find irritating, but others find very relaxing,” she says. Doves are also rather social -- usually travelling in groups or pairs -- so it would be best to bring Jamie into a home where he will get plen- ty of attention. To meet Jamie, stop by 1505 Went- worth St. in Whitby or call 905-665- 7430 for more information. Some start thinking about the Christmas shopping list, the winter tires that need to be installed and all of the other ‘Things to Do’ to prepare for another Canadian winter. For some, the all too familiar question is asked “What happened to the New Ye ar’s resolutions made at the beginning of the year? “ Others wonder what happened to the self-promised health goals that were supposed to be achieved in 2011. And then there are others, unfortunately, who suffered unexpected physical health setbacks that require recovery and healing time. Indeed, those who suffered from untimely workplace, sports-related and motor vehicle injury in 2011 often find the road to recovery stressful and filled with uncertainty. Dr.Va sko Grujovski of Active Therapy and Sports Clinic says that its team is the best in Ajax and Pickering to treat individuals who have minor or major musculoskeletal conditions. “The main treatment goal at our clinic is to provide the client with the most efficient and contemporary health care treatment protocol. Our multi-disciplinary team of professionals are highly skilled in the disciplines of Physical Therapy, Athletic Therapy, Acupuncture, Chiropractic Care, Massage Therapy and Custom Made Orthotics.” The team is also well aware of the importance of new technology to treat soft tissue, bone and joint pain. That’s why the staff at Active Therapy and Sports Clinic is excited about Shockwave Therapy which can treat Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendinopathy,Tennis Elbow, Jumper’s Knee, Stress Fractures, Bursitis and many other conditions. The amazing thing about the Shockwave Therapy machine is that it has a high success rate and it helps to accelerate healing without surgical treatment and without side effects. As a general rule, however, with any type of new medical technology, it’s important to discuss any concerns with a certified practitioner. The friendly, caring and vibrant atmosphere at Active Therapy and Sports Clinic is one of the main reasons why the centre has been around since 1995. The clinic has treated countless number of individuals through the years. Its dedication to bring the best in sports and orthopedic rehabilitation in Ajax and Pickering is unsurpassed. Health & Wellness ADVERTISING FEATURE It’s normal to feel occasional anxiety in everyday life, but 1 in 5 Canadians experience something far more intense than that. If your stress is so persistent that it interferes with your daily activities, your self-esteem, your relationships or your peace of mind, you may be one of 6 million Canadians who suffer from an anxiety disorder. Most commonly, people with anxiety disorders engage in damaging behaviours to try and lessen their anxiety, such as avoiding circumstances that make them anxious. “It’s this curtailing of activities that causes continued distress,” explains clinical psychologist Dr. David Direnfeld, Director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax, Ontario. “When you stop going to parties or driving or even leaving the house, it makes you feel that life is shrinking around you—that you’re trapped in a prison of worry.” Fear, Sadness, Worry are Treatable Conditions Simple “talk therapy” can yield same or better results than medication, studies show “The erosion of our self-confidence and self-worth is often accompanied by depression—a pervasive sense of hopeless- ness, sadness or lack of self-worth,” explains Dr. Direnfeld. The good news here, according to our expert, is that all of the conditions listed above (and plenty more) are treatable by a licensed professional—and often, treatment need not involve medication. One form of “talk therapy” known as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be as effective as medication for the treatment of anxiety disorders and depres- sion in the short term, and in many cases, more effective at preventing relapse in the long term. In fact, studies involving brain-imaging scans show that CBT produces biochemical changes in the brain that are similar, if not identical to the effects of medication. “The major differ- See page 13 durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • October 13, 201113 AP Ask Our Audiologist By Audiologist Lila O’Neill, M.Sc., Reg.CASLPO “If yo u don’t use it,yo u’ll lose it” Advanced care... tomorrow’s hearing today! Manufacturers are currently competing fiercely with one another to gain market share. Some hearing aids come with free accessories; others are reduced by as much as 30 to 50%, and including on advanced technology. Q.Can I buy any hearing aid that is on sale? A. Hearing aids are medical devices that need to be prescribed by an Au diologist (or physician). Our staff chooses hearing aids that are appropriate to the person’s hearing loss, the ear canal size and shape, and to the person’s lifestyle. Hearing aids are an investment to improve quality of life. If a person is exposed to noise (which most of us are), he/she will need hearing aids with good noise reduction circuits. There is no point in buying hearing aids that you can only wear in quiet settings just because they are on sale.Just like there is no point in buying a lawn mower on sale if yo u live in a high rise apartment. Q.Is there financial assistance to purchase hearing aids? A. First, a person needs a hearing test. Some may charge for testing; others may offer it for free; or the cost of the test may be included in the price of the hearing aids. However, medically necessary diagnostic hearing tests are covered under OHIP. Second, amplification needs to be prescribed. Both Government and Private Insurances prov ide funding towards the purchase price. Our Clinics are registered with all appropriate agencies. Call us today to schedule yo ur hearing test. Anxious about your job? Your finances? Your health? ence,” explains Dr. Direnfeld, “is that with talk therapy, the risk of side-effects is nil.” These facts, along with thousands of clinical studies supporting its effectiveness, have earned CBT recognition by Health Canada as the only validated non-medical treatment for anxiety disorders and depression. CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented, forward-looking approach to personal change. It oper- ates on a simple premise: that the way we feel (anxious or fearful, for example) is a result of our thoughts and innermost beliefs, as well as our behaviours. “All of our beliefs are the cumulative effects of our life experiences,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “At times, we may find ourselves with irrational, inaccurate beliefs that are the result of experiences that happened earlier in life. In other words, sometimes our beliefs don’t mesh with reality.” The method of CBT is not to dwell on the past, but to prepare for the future—to rewrite the software of the mind, so to speak, by challenging the irrational beliefs that sabotage you, and replacing them with accurate beliefs that help you overcome your anxiety, and live out your full potential. “I’ve based my entire career on the efficacy of CBT,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “Week after week I see patients who’ve lived with anxiety or depression for years, even decades, make life- altering changes in a relatively short period of time.” “All you need,” he adds, “is the desire and willingness to change.” For more infor- mation about Centre for Cog- nitive Behaviour Therapy call 905- 427-2007. John to serve as league commissioner shawn cayley scayley@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- While the struc- ture of the league is quite differ- ent than originally intended, it appears the Canadian Lacrosse League, or CLax as it has been branded, will be a go. League commissioner Paul St. John of Ajax made the announce- ment this week that plans are firmly in place to launch the six- team league on Jan. 7, 2012 with a triple-header played at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Ohsweken. Oshweken, the only remain- ing team from the original three announced back in May -- both Peterborough and Montreal pulled out -- will join Iroquois, Brampton, Peel, Oshawa and Durham in the inaugural season. The blueprint is far from the original that St. John had in mind some five months ago when word first dropped about the league, but he is confident as things move forward that the league will be a success. “We’ve got to the bottom of the mountain now. Getting the league together and getting the teams together, that was the hilly road to get to the bottom,” St. John said of uncertainty surrounding the league in the last few months. “Now we’ve got to climb that mountain. We’ve got to get fans, sponsors, ticket sales. There is so much more to do and it’s exciting. I am looking forward to getting out and talking to people, telling them about our brand.” The original concept was to have teams in both western and eastern Canada, but those plans didn’t work out. From there, CLax was going to spend year one with a team in Quebec and a handful in Ontario. And up until a couple of weeks ago, that still looked to be a possi- bility. However, Montreal pulled the plug on its operations for 2012, leaving the league with just Brampton, Oshawa and Oshwek- en, and St. John wondering if the league could get off the ground. For a brief time the idea of run- ning a three-team league was dis- cussed, but he and deputy com- missioner Jim Veltman thought better of it and came up with the idea of putting two teams in each venue occupied by the existing teams. That led to the birth of the Iroquois, Peel and Durham orga- nizations. “What we decided was we’re going to have venues that we get at nine o’clock in the morning and we’re going to have it until 11 o’clock at night, so how do we utilize that?” St. John explains. “Our goal all along was to start a pro league and allow more play- ers to play in it and give them an opportunity to play winter ball and make a little bit of money ... Jim and I came up with the idea of lets put two teams in a venue. We talked to the Oshweken group and they were all for it.” Rodney Hill will operate both Oshweken and Iroquois dur- ing the 14-game regular season, while St. John said the league will assume ownership over the other four clubs. While far from an ideal situa- tion, doing so was a necessary step, according to St. John. “Our goal is to start selling off franchises as soon as possible, whether it’s this year or whether it’s in the offseason, between sea- sons next year. We want to sell the franchises. The league doesn’t want to own them for a long time, but to get the league started we felt this was the best fit,” he said. The Oshawa and Durham fran- chises will play out of the GM Centre. St. John said Steve Toll will serve as director of lacrosse operations for both teams, while a coach and general manager for each will likely be announced prior to a player combine in Osh- weken on Oct. 29. name the teams DURHAM -- The Canadian Lacrosse League wants to get the community involved when it comes to the naming process of its franchises. Paul St. John, the league commis- sioner, would like fans to submit their choices for nicknames and logos for the Oshawa and Durham organizations that will play out of the General Motors Cen- tre. “The winner will get season’s tick- ets to both teams, because they are going to play doubleheaders,” said St. John. “They’ll get a team replica jersey with that, and I believe that will be auto- graphed. Whoever wins for Oshawa will get the Oshawa team autographed and whoever wins the Durham with get a Durham team’s autographed.” The contest will only be open until Oct. 17. Finally, Provenza- no scored with 1:45 left on the clock, assist- ed by Shelby Conquer and Alex Beach. Heinrich did his part, stopping 13 of 14 shots that were fired his way by the Uni- versity of Waterloo, however the Ridge- backs offence was held off the sheet by Waterloo’s Hansel Paico-Avilez in a 1-0 final. Adam Craig’s shot at the 35-minute mark was the only one to get past Hen- rich. Meanwhile, for UOIT, Matt Craven of Oshawa and Justin Gordon of Pickering had two shots apiece for UOIT, but were unable to beat Paico-Avilez. In their previous outing, Gordon tal- lied the only Ridgebacks goal in a 4-1 loss to Laurier. His goal came at the 20-min- ute mark, however a quick start from the Golden Hawks had already allowed them to build a 3-0 advantage to that point. Matt Caldaroni of Pickering made six saves for UOIT in the losing effort. The Ridgebacks were back in action Wednesday night (after our print dead- line) against the number one ranked York Lions. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • October 13, 201120 AP Rewarding Careers in Education Open House Information Session for Careers as Education Assistants Learn about admissions requirements Program content employment opportunities Financing possibilities Graduate success stories Hear from our admissions staff and our Program Coordinator Wednesday Oct. 19th @ 7:00 p.m. Whitby RSVP or for more information @ 1-888-732-0326 • • • • • •CL24418Microsoft Office Specialist 2010 TrainingStand out from your competition Microsoft Office Certification helps you differentiate yourself in a competitive job market and gives you the desktop computing skills to tackle the toughest tasks and projects.
