At a meeting on Sept. 19, residents detailed concerns regarding the volume and speed of traffic coming through the hamlet. “There’s been a lot of changes in Claremont over the last three years,” said Jim Doyle, presi- dent of the Claremont and District Community Association. “There’s been a huge increase in population and a growing number of families with young children. As such, there’s been a growing con- cern about traffic through Claremont, primarily the traffic volume east-west and the speed of that traffic. Traffic studies tell us approximately 6,000 vehicles per day come through the hamlet, which is a lot for a small community, with some clocked at up to 90 km/h.” Claremont quest for traffic calming continues PICKERING COUNCIL AGREES, BUT NO HEADWAY ON MOTION JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND CLAREMONT -- Jim Doyle, president of the Claremont Community Association, at the four corners in Claremont. Chiasson also has history as mall Santa JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- An Oshawa day care operator has been ordered held in custody for three days while police search computers seized from his home for evidence of child pornog- raphy. Shawn Chiasson, 37, said little during a video appearance in an Oshawa courtroom Thursday morning. Mr. Chiasson was arrested after Durham police executed a search war- rant at his King Street East home Wednesday, discovering what they described as a large collection of child por- nography. Mr. Chiasson, who ran the Kids Matter Fam- ily Day Care and has also worked at GTA malls as a Santa, is charged with possession of child pornography, two counts of making child porn available, and two counts of attempting to access child pornography. During Thursday’s court appearance, pros- ecutor Brenda Green sought a three-day hold during which police will examine evidence seized from the home for child porn. A publi- cation ban covers evidence heard in court. Outside court, Detective Randy Norton of Durham’s child exploitation unit said offi- cers will conduct an intensive examination of computer hard drives seized during Wednes- day’s raid. “We’re just at the tip of the iceberg,” he said. Police said in a media release Wednesday that a preliminary scan of material seized does not indicate that any children in Mr. Chi- asson’s care had been harmed. Cops want to identify any of the children victimized in the porn they’ve seized, Det. Norton said. “We’re reaching out to the community,” he said. Mr. Chiasson formerly operated day cares on Thorogood Street in Ajax and in Brampton. He moved to King Street East in Oshawa last November. He has worked as a Santa Claus at several malls, going by the name “Santa Shawn”. Police are hoping to hear from any- one who’s had contact with Mr. Chiasson. Wednesday’s arrest follows a lengthy inves- tigation that began last November, police said. Officers in Durham were assisted by OPP and Toronto police. Mr. Chiasson is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday. poLICE Durham daycare operator held on child porn charges SHAWn cHiASSOn durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 23, 20114 AP www.artoftransition.ca |1-800-413-0017 |tourism@durham.ca FIND US ON: CONNECTING CREATIVEMINDS INDURHAM REGION CELEBRATING Creative Minds in Durham Region SUBMISSION DEADLINEOCTOBER 7TH to download nomination forms, view complete category descriptions and to learn more Introducing the Durham Art of Tr ansition Creative Awards (DATCA).The DATCA awards are a new expression of corporate and civil citizenship in Durham Region, designed to engage creativity, innovation and collaboration in Durham Region’s business community.Do you know a gifted artist, enthralling entertainer, inspiring writer, excellent corporate citizen, motivated small business or environmental superstar?Perhaps you are one yourself! Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX-PICKERING -- Local candidates delivered a feisty performance at an Ajax- Pickering all candidates’ meeting on Wednes- day night. About 150 people turned out to watch Lib- eral incumbent Joe Dickson, Progressive Conservative Todd McCarthy, the Green Par- ty’s Steven Toman and the NDP’s Evan Wise- man tackle the issues of the day. The event was organized by Community Development Council of Durham and hosted at Devi Mandir on Brock Road in Pickering. CDCD executive director Tracey Vaughan said Libertarian candidate Andrew Delis sent his regrets. In his open- ing remarks, Mr. McCarthy came out firing. “Ladies and gen- tlemen, I believe this election is about change ... a change away from high taxes and wasteful, corrupt spend- ing. I believe it’s time for change so that the priorities of the hard-working Ontario fami- lies who play by the rules and pay their taxes are the priorities of the government.” In fact, he repeatedly characterized the McGuinty government as wasteful and cor- rupt. That did not sit well with Mr. Dickson. “The only thing corrupt that I hear this eve- ning is what seems to be coming from a cou- ple of members’ mouths and I’d like to set the record straight on a few items,” the current MPP fired back. Mr. Dickson said Liberal programs such as full-day kindergarten have provided big sav- ings for families and his government also cre- ated the Ontario Child Benefit for low-income families of up to $1,100 a year and more than a million children benefit from it. “We’ve raised the social assistance rates seven times after more than a decade of slashed and fro- zen rates by the Hudak-Harris Tories.” He also pointed out the Liberals steadi- ly raised the minimum wage from $6.85 in 2003 to $10.25 and said the “Harris-Hudak corruption Tories” went eight years without the increase and said even the NDP opposed minimum wage increases. “I think it’s important to talk not about decades ago but to talk about the last eight years, the present and the future,” shot back Mr. McCarthy. “I hear the tales of sadness and tragedy and misery and woe when peo- ple can’t afford to pay their hydro bills under a McGuinty Liberal government, they can’t afford the taxes that are punishing them and oppressing them and they don’t have the jobs. Either they don’t have the jobs at all or they don’t have well-paying jobs, they’re stuck with part-time jobs. That’s not acceptable, we need to move away from that to a prosperous Ontario.” Mr. Wiseman said the NDP opposed the budget as a whole, not the minimum wage portion, and said the party is promising to increase minimum wage to $11 per hour and he thinks it should be closer to $13 an hour. The NDP candidate also made the devel- opment of the Seaton community in north Pickering, projected to house 70,000 people when it’s built out, an issue. “For those of you who take the 401 to work, imagine if 70,000 people move into Seaton ... and 20,000 take the 401 to work,” he said. Mr. Toman stayed out of the more heated exchanges, sticking to his message of what the Green Party could do for residents. Like the other candidates, he addressed the issue of poverty. “We will provide incentives so that eating healthy locally grown food is available to children, adults and seniors through com- munity-based healthy food programs. We will change how we build cities so that affordable housing can be provided by the private sec- tor,” he said. election 2011 Ajax-Pickering candidates clash at feisty debate AviAtion Tolerance versus responsibility To the editor: Re: ‘Noise in the community is inevitable, letter to the editor, durhamregion.com, Sept. 14, 2011. It is one thing to be tolerant. One must also consider responsibility. The crux of the concerns is the health and safety of the citizens of Oshawa. There are now two flying clubs based at the airport with 20 or more planes and a third (Seneca Flying Club) has applied to the City to be housed at Oshawa with an additional 20 or more planes. I have had a luncheon meeting of more than one hour with the manager of the Oshawa airport and have been in contact with Nav Canada and Transport Canada in regards to the expressed concerns. All parties mentioned are highly concerned and involved with noise and flight patterns and have significant regulations in these regards. The concern is not with the usual traf- fic that goes on at any airport, but with the repetitive and constant training flight pat- terns versus circuit flight patterns, the lat- ter patterns being so designed to avoid populated areas. Training flights are entirely over popu- lated areas and with more than 40 planes, many in the air at one time, and circuiting every five to six minutes at low altitude over east, west and central Oshawa. One must consider whether such activity is appropri- ate. One plane in the past flew into a house on Hortop Street and in the past month another made an emergency landing in Clarington. During our luncheon the manager of the Oshawa airport also indicated that if Sen- eca was housed in Oshawa that their train- ing flights be done at Peterborough, 15 minutes away. Why? To control noise, was his answer. And why do they build noise barriers along 401? For noise control. Robert Cummings Oshawa trAnsit Regular DRT rider offers suggestions To the editor: I continue to be a strong supporter and regular user of Durham Region Transit and am a monthly seniors’ pass purchaser. Overall I am very pleased with the service offered (including the positive attitudes of most drivers). Four areas cause concern for seniors and other passengers who have devices which require special accommo- dation such as wheelchairs, walkers, car- riages, strollers, etc. 1. Simcoe and Taunton East to Mary -- no service eastbound. 2. Ritson and Taunton East -- no service westbound toward Simcoe. 3. Smart Centre (Harmony and Taunton East) -- no service from the extreme east side of the centre and riders who wish ser- vice on DRT must nego- tiate the whole length of the parking lot through construction, dust, wind, and intolerant drivers. This disrespect is also directed at adults accom- panying small people who do not have long limbs to negotiate the distances ... including raised curbs. 4. The AMC cinema is like an island that has relatively little direct access for those other than car users and I am sure that could use some more convenient public transit access. Dale A. Stewart Oshawa recycling Rubber band solutions? To the editor: I’m cleaning out a kitchen drawer and wonder what to do with about a thou- sand elastic bands stuffed there over many months. I return many of them to our paper boy, but need a more far-reaching plan. I called the recycling people and spoke to a nice lady who explained that what’s needed is a company that would devise a secondary use for them. Can anyone help? All content copyright We think... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com Editorial Opinions News Advertiser • September 23, 20116 AP durhamregion.comAutumn safety campaign in Durham should get road results Police will be hitting the road in Durham Region over the next few months to save us from ourselves. A new campaign by Durham Regional Police, OPP and Durham Region’s health department will see law enforcement offi- cials focus on specific driving dangers that are contributing to property damage and personal injury on the region’s roads and highways. Called ‘Think and Drive ... a sec- ond is all it takes’, the initiative will focus on speeding during September, distracted driving in October and impaired driving in November and December. And the numbers compiled by the vari- ous agencies taking part in the initiative are stunning. Health officials say roughly 3,500 people arrive in emergency depart- ments annually due to motor vehicle col- lisions. There have been 58 fatalities on Durham Region roads in the last two years. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for youths under age 14. In the first week of school at the beginning of Septem- ber, Durham police issued dozens of dis- tracted driving tickets. Moreover, an infor- mal observation post set up by Metroland Media Group’s Durham Region Division journalists at major intersections around Durham earlier this year counted hun- dreds of drivers at the wheel while using cellphones. The Think and Drive slogan is catchy, certainly, but addresses the issue at its most basic level for motorists. When we get in our cars and head out onto Durham Region roads, we don’t do so in isolation. We must share the road with other motor- ists, cyclists and pedestrians. In that con- text, we must always remain aware of what is happening around us -- we must think while in control of a vehicle. This new campaign differs somewhat -- to the likely benefit of residents in Dur- ham Region -- in that it’s not a ‘blitz’ of the sort mounted by law enforcement on long weekends. Instead, it takes an incremen- tal approach with a focus on specific driv- ing hazards and will be spread out over the fall. Turn off your cellphones, butt out your cigarettes, apply your makeup at home and always travel consistently within the post- ed speed limits. Most importantly, arrange a ride if you’re drinking, take a taxi or designate a sober driver so you, your passengers and other motorists with whom you share the road can get to your collective destinations safe- ly. If there’s one sure way to avoid the long arm of the law in Durham Region this fall when you’re on the roads, the solution is simple: think and drive. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 23, 20117 P KOBA Entertainment & Durham Parent are pleased to offer you a chance to win ONE ofTHREE sets of FOUR tickets plus a meet & greet! ENTER ONLINE @ www.durhamparent.com Mr. Doyle and resident Dave Storms recounted the group’s fruitless efforts to have Claremont designated a Communi- ty Safety Zone and have speed indicators installed. The group has been in talks with Region of Durham staff, since the area of concern is along a regional road, for three years. Although various solutions have been proposed, residents have yet to see any improvements. “We feel like this whole thing has been going on for so long it’s getting bogged down in a bureaucratic nightmare,” Mr. Doyle said, noting that the area of concern includes Claremont Public School. “As far as we’re concerned it’s not an emergency but it is quite dangerous. Are they waiting for someone to get hurt or killed?” Councillors echoed the group’s concerns, but noted that the City has no authority to authorize improvements on a regional road. In an effort to help get the group’s message across, councillors Peter Rodri- gues and Bill McLean offered to present a motion stating council’s support for the Claremont group. Councillor David Pickles questioned the last-minute motion, suggesting more con- sultation may be necessary before putting anything down on paper. “Our staff have been working quite a bit on this issue and speaking with regional staff trying to get this issue brought to the Region’s attention,” he explained. “I haven’t seen this motion that is being discussed, but might it be a good idea for us to sit down with residents and staff and go through the issue a little bit to make sure we get our best case on paper before we go back to the Region?” Councillor Jennifer O’Connell dis- agreed. “Our next chance to take a position on this would be at the end of (October),” she said. “Would us taking a position tonight be better suited to the needs of your com- munity? Do you not feel a formal position of this council in support of your initia- tives would be a first step and a very good step?” Mr. Doyle agreed. “I think it would be a major step for- ward and we would be very grateful,” he explained. “Obviously the sooner we can tackle the issue, the better.” A motion to introduce, which required a two-thirds vote and would allow Coun. Rodrigues to present a motion in support of the association, was defeated. Residents of Claremont will be present- ing their case again at an upcoming meet- ing of the Regional works committee on Wednesday, Sept. 28. “Obviously we are frustrated,” Mr. Doyle said of the lack of progress. “But we will persevere and we will carry on.” Forward, together. At a regular council meeting on Sept. 19, Councillor Kevin Ashe expressed dis- appointment in his fellow councillors. “I’m going to suggest in a very nice way that I think the process tonight was incorrect,” Coun. Ashe said, referring to an attempt to bring forward a motion in support of Claremont residents without notice. “I don’t think it was the intent of the mover and seconder to steamroll any- one or make policy on the fly, but I think it created undue conflict on council.” Coun. Bill McLean, who seconded the motion, defended his actions. “This motion was not intended to deep six or go around anyone,” he said. “Because this is a regional road we wanted the motion to come before council tonight so we can take it back to regional council and get the ball roll- ing to assist those residents who have been after this for a number of years. If you took offence to it, too bad.” Councillor Jennifer O’Connell decried what she explained as a general state of “petty fighting. “I sat here and listened to the majority of coun- cil talk in support of Claremont and traffic calming, yet the motion was not able to be introduced all because of petty fighting,” she said. “Until we can come together and get work done, nothing is going to change. After four years voters are going to look at us and say where was the leadership and why couldn’t we get anything done even when we all agree on something? I want to make sure busi- ness can get done on this council and we don’t become a joke in the region.” While some councillors bris- tled at the discussion, with Coun. Doug Dickerson noting he “took umbrage” at some of the comments, Mayor Dave Ryan said he thought the discussion was a positive step. “I for one am very, very pleased to have heard this discussion here this evening,” he said. “I hope in some way it was cathar- tic, but I hope in more ways it was an expression of intent on behalf of those who spoke to have more meaningful discussions amongst council. I’ve heard the terms ill-tempered and ill- mannered here, and quite frankly I think those expressions to some degree are valid and, frankly, unacceptable. I take this as a commitment of every- one here on council as to how they will be proceed- ing in the future.” jENNifER O’CONNELL durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 23, 20118 P SEPTEMBER TheSpectacular Free Bbq Lunch!huge pre-owned clearance event! 2005 BMW X-5 4.4LV8AUTO WHITE ON TAN, LEATHER, PAN ROOF, DVD 2004 GMC YUKON SLT 4X4 8CYL,AUTO, LOADED, CARBON GREY ON GREY, LEATHER, SUNROOF 2006 HONDA ACCORD SE V6AUTO, FULLY LOADED, SUNROOF, 17”ALLOY RIMS, 75,000KMS 2007 MINI COOPER AUTO, LOADED, LEATHER, ALLOY WHEELS 2006 FORD ESCAPE V6AUTO, FULLY LOADED, 78000 KM ALLOY WHEELS 2008 DODGE CALIBER SXT 4 CYL,AUTOMATIC, FULLY LOADED 2008 GRAND CARAVAN V6,AUTO, FULLY LOADED, STOW’N’GO,ALLOY RIMS 2008 SUBARU OUTBACK AWD, 4-CYL, LOADED, SUNROOF, READY 4 WINTER,ALLOY RIMS 2008 HUMMER H3 ‘ALPHA’ V8AUTO, WHITE ON BLACK LEATH- ER, SUNROOF, CHROME PACKAGE 2007 GMC YUKON SLT 4X4 V8AUTO, FULLY LOADED SUNROOF, LEATHER, 3RD SEATHER, 3RD SEATTHER, 3RD SEATHER, 3RD SEA SUZUKI OF PICKERING 970 BROCK ROAD, PICKERING 905.420.4800 2010 EQUATOR Now Only $28,795* Only $17,995* Only $10,995*‘09‘09 OnlyOnly $10,995*$10,995*‘09‘09 SUZUKI D E M O BLOWOUT P R I C I N G ! ! $14,444* SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2011 ONE DAY ONLY! *PRICES ARE PLUS TAXES AND LICENSING. The run, which was held on Sept. 18 at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex, raised more than $15,000. Added to the city’s overall total, that means Pickering has raised about $770,000 for the Terry Fox Foun- dation since the inaugural run in 1988. “That’s a pretty good total for our city and our residents,” said Kevin Cahill, organizer of the Pickering Terry Fox Run. “We want to thank everyone who helped us get there because we are winning, because those research dollars are helping a lot of people.” Mr. Cahill said there were about 250 people at the Sunday event, including about 50 new participants. “There were a lot of new faces, which is really nice,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue that trend every year and build it up because we’re not going to stop. Terry didn’t stop and we aren’t going to stop either, not until we cure cancer.” Despite the good turnout, Mr. Cahill said there has been a downward trend in participa- tion over the years, something he attributes to “donor fatigue. “There are so many things going on,” he explained. “With the current economic times people don’t have enough money to give and with every- one being so busy people don’t have the time either, so it’s hard for people definitely. But we had a lot of happy, smiling faces and we really want to thank each and every person who came out this weekend and helped make it a success.” OSHAWA ANNIVERSARY SALE! Comedies, thrillers and classics such as Jane Eyre and Cinderella are in store for audiences. And for Ajax Community The- atre, it’s the group’s first year at the new St. Francis Centre. Ned Durango Comes To Big Oak runs to Oct. 29. It’s described as a “funny, sometimes moving” work by Canada’s own Norm Foster. Class Act’s season continues with Dilemmas With Dinner, running Nov. 4 to Dec. 18, and a murder mystery, The Deadly Reunion, on Nov. 30. At Whitby Courthouse Theatre, Mindgame, a mystery thriller by Anthony Horowitz, kicks things off with a run from Nov. 10 to 26. Next up is a musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, from Feb. 9 to 25. Then it’s time for a classic Gothic romance, Char- lotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, adapted by Willis Hall, from April 19 to May 5. The group’s annual Youth Group Production for this season is yet to be announced. In Ajax, Ajax Community Theatre starts its season with I Hate Hamlet, a comedy by Paul Rudnick, running Nov. 10 to 19. Things get a lot more serious with Dial “M” For Murder, a thriller from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4. The ACT season wraps up with a Norm Foster comedy, Outlaw, running April 26 to May 5. Oshawa Little Theatre starts its season on a lighter note as well, with Neil Simon’s Jake’s Women from Sept. 29 to Oct. 15. The clas- sic musical Annie is next, running Nov. 17 to Dec. 10. It’s followed by another classic, To Kill a Mock- ingbird, based upon Harper Lee’s novel and dramatized by Christo- pher Sergel, running from Feb. 2 to 18. Chess, described as “a complex rock opera,” runs March 29 to April 14. Also in Oshawa, Durham Shoe- string Performers begins its season with the Pulitzer Prize and Tony- winning Doubt: A Parable, by John Patrick Shanley. It runs Nov. 4 to 12. Next is a fast-paced comedy, Beau- tiful City by George F. Walker, from Jan. 20 to 28. The season ends with Lucy, running March 23 to 31. Up north, another Pulitzer-win- ning play starts the season for Bore- lians Community Theatre. Thorn- ton Wilder’s Our Town is staged Oct. 13 to 23. It’s followed by Rich- ard Harris’s Stepping Out from Feb. 23 to March 3. The Scugog Choral Society pres- ents Neil Simon’s musical comedy, Promises Promises, Nov. 17 to Dec. 3. In March, Breaking Up is Hard to Do comes to the stage. Herongate Barn Theatre in Pickering serves up lots of laughs with Michael and Susan Parker’s Sex Please, We’re 60!, running now and until Oct. 29. The Dolphins atom team fought hard but in the end came up short with the Bulldogs hold- ing on to an 8-0 lead. Some of the highlights in the game came from some criti- cal offensive plays that almost turned the game around for the Dolphins. Riley McBride, Aaron Chung, Shaeden Currie, Malik Williams all rushed for yards, while on the defensive end, Myles Hilton, Darius Brown, Aamarii Notice, Elijah Trench, Aaron Chung, Aidan Mar- tin and Dasani McIntosh had some great tackles. The coach- ing staff includes head coach Jay McBride, Shawn Currie, Mar- lon Hylton, Ryen Maxwell, Paul Chung, Greg Roberts and Jen Siokalo. The peewees revenged last week’s loss by trumping Bramp- ton 28-6. The Dolphins were led by their impenetrable defence con- sisting of hard-tackling Qui- tyn Pettiford, Rasheed Tuck- er, Shiomare Peters, Janai Wil- liamson, Eric Duthie, Jaiden Cruz, Tyrell Chung, Nathaniel Chung, Kenneth Soutter, Zach- ary Munro, Brandon Romain, Cameron Tabatabaei and Chris- topher Sabat. The offence was also in full form as the Dolphins rushed through the Brampton Bulldog endzone in all quarters. Running back Craig Gonsalves rushed for three touchdowns, while Bailey Grimes, Rasheed Tucker, Jaiden Cruz, D’Andrew Higgins, Treavon Grant and Jor- dan Wright all broke through for some yards. Jaiden Cruz also pushed in a touchdown. Coach- ing staff includes head coach Trevor McHaffie, Mike Soutter, Trevor Aitchenson, John Peters, Curtis Inniss, Andrew Higgins, Rod Chung, Stephen Duncan, Brian Munro, Loni Dowe and Bonnie Munro. The bantam team came up short against Brampton team 30-8. Although they were denied the win, the Dolphins gave a great performance. The Dol- phins offence had some great moments, with rushes com- ing from Justice Johnson, Tariq Mitradee, Julian Ward-Williams and Jordan Grimes, who had the Dolphins only touchdown of the game. On the defensive end, Matthew Romain had an amazing game with 11 tack- les, coming from all ends of the field. Linemen Shareef Tucker, George Goudogianis, Nathan- iel Benjamin, linebackers Jorin Grant, Dylan Colthirst and Kes- ean Bennett all had a great game, while Mark Cruciano had two very critical interceptions. Coaching staff includes head coach Conrad La Touche, Karl Bennett, Claude Lindsay, Brian Knight, Tony Macintosh, Mike Cummings, Bert Smith and Michelle Benjamin. Her first execu- tive committee meeting was on the Sept. 14, and the next one is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5. The club plans three open houses -- on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, and Friday, Oct. 7. Anyone inter- ested in finding out about the sport and trying a few throws of the rocks is welcome to attend. Clean shoes are a must! The men’s competitive league will have a warm-up night on Tuesday, Oct. 11 beginning at 7 p.m. It is a chance for new play- ers to get placed on a team and have a pre-season game. Saturday, Oct. 15 there is planned a Sticks and Stones Bonspiel which includes nine holes of golf with a cart, a four- end curling match, lunch, din- ner and dance. The following weekend has an adult curling clinic on Saturday, Oct. 22. Graduates from the youth leagues are now competing in the World Curling Tour. Tim March and Patrick Janssen are on the Mark Kean rink and played Sept. 15-17 in the Shorty Jenkins Bonspiel in Brockville. The team ended just out of the final draws. Next on the calendar is the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard Oct. 7-10. Chris Van Huyse will also be in this event curling with Mike Anderson. As many of you know, the long- time third on the Glenn Howard rink, Richard Hart of Pickering, has hung up his white belt and plans to refocus his time towards his family and work. Over his competitive career, Hart won a 1998 Olympic silver medal, the 2007 Canadian Brier and the 2007 Ford Worlds. Beloved husband of Elizabeth (nee McLean). Adored father of Kathryn and Michael, Neil and Jennifer. Cherished Papa of Austin, Spencer and Haydn. Honoured "Papa Bill" of Shayla, Greg, Alex and Cassie. Bill and Liz came to Canada in 1957. In 1966, they moved to Pickering (Bay Ridges) and they never left. They had the unique privilege of having the same neighbours for 45 years. Most of the neighbours were in the same situation as Bill and Liz, raising kids without relatives nearby. They developed into a surrogate family for each other. Bill's family would like to express genuine gratitude to the staff of Rouge Valley Centenary ICU for their excellent and com- passionate care they gave to Bill. Visitation will occur at McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME in Pickering Village Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Memorial Service will occur Sunday September 25, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. A small reception after the service will follow. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to Lakeridge Health Centenary ICU or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be placed at www.mceachniefuneral.ca "Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver." Barbara de Angelis SMITH, William - Died peacefully at home on September 21 at the wonderful age of 91. He was proud to be a British WWII veteran. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Freda, his 3 children: Brad (Tytti), Linda (Stewart) and Penny (Malcolm); his 6 grandchildren: Liana, Shane, Teija, Nicole, Colin and Elisabeth and his 3 great grandchildren: Tailynn, Brianne and Cayden. After emigrating from England in 1956 he worked in the private sector as Company Comptroller at Plessey Canada and Etelco Canada. In 1984 he retired from the Ontario Government where he held positions with Ontario Development Corporation and the Ontario Treasury Board. He was a founding member and President of the Victoria Park Cricket Club and a former member of the Scarborough Art Guild. He served as past Treasurer and was an active member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258. As a member of Whitevale Golf Club – he achieved his goal of boasting to his friends that not only did he walk the course at 90 he also golfed his age - 90. We all called him a “Renaissance Man” given his many skills: oil painting, writing, gourmet cooking, wood-working, gardening, and his financial acumen to list only a few. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Poppy Fund at RCL Branch 258. Enjoy your summer....Why not let Perfect Maid Service take care of your house cleaning needs? Fully bonded!
