(905) 495-9598 Dave Martin, founder of Durham Nuclear Awareness, dies Chris hAll chall@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Durham’s anti- nuclear community lost its longtime leader last Friday with the passing of Dave Martin. Mr. Martin, a founder of Durham Nuclear Awareness, died on Sept. 9 after a four- year battle against prostate cancer. He was 56. “He started Durham Nucle- ar Awareness in the heart of Canada’s nuclear indus- try and let the public ask their own questions about the safety of nuclear energy and find their own answers,” explained Shawn-Patrick Stensil, a friend of Mr. Mar- tin’s who serves as an energy and climate campaigner for Greenpeace Canada. Durham Nuclear Aware- ness was opened in Uxbridge in the mid-1980s by Mr. Mar- tin and his partner Irene Kock. Armed with files of independent information on the nuclear industry, they served as a resource centre for those curious about the contentious energy source. “Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Dave was at the forefront of asking questions about nuclear safety,” said Mr. Stensil. Mr. Martin’s opposition to nuclear energy was cement- ed in 1979, after a cooling malfunction caused part of a core to melt at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. “That’s when he real- ly started to ask questions about the reactor building boom in Ontario and in his family’s backyard,” said Mr. Stensil. Subsequent nuclear acci- dents in Chernobyl and, most recently, Japan, only confirmed Mr. Martin’s work, he added. “Imagine that happening in Durham Region, that’s what he was trying to stop,” said Mr. Stensil. Known in some energy agency circles as “the skunk in the room,” according to Mr. Stensil, Mr. Martin had a habit of ferreting out infor- mation through Freedom Of Information requests that energy authorities would rather keep hidden away. “He wanted to see what they were saying and exposed what they weren’t saying,” said Mr. Stensil. Mr. Martin also opposed the con- struction of the Darlington nuclear plant and called for its Pickering coun- terpart to be shut- tered. In 1997, he helped orches- trate a referen- dum in Pickering that asked voters whether they sup- ported an environmental assessment prior to restart- ing the Pickering A nuclear reactor and the refurbish- ment of the Pickering B facil- ity. Voters overwhelmingly agreed, however the Atomic Energy Control Board vetoed the results. Mr. Martin later joined the Sierra Club of Canada in 2001 after Durham Nuclear Awareness closed its doors. He later became involved with Greenpeace Canada. “He was passionate and tenacious and we have a lot to thank him for,” said Mr. Stensil. “He helped open the opportunity for green ener- gy to develop in Ontario and that’s a great legacy.” “David was an aggres- sive champion of the envi- ronment,” said Wynn Walters, friend and col- league. For many years, Mr. Martin was chairman of the Uxbridge Conservation Association which eventu- ally became the Durham Con- servation Asso- ciation. He was a key mem- ber in the Gan Eden OMB process, which enabled him to be a significant contribu- tor to the Moraine Protection Legislation. “He (Mr. Martin) was a very committed, very likeable and a very real environmentalist,” said Brian Buckles, a friend and colleague. Mr. Buckles explained that Mr. Martin was extreme- ly instrumental in getting funding for the Trans Can- ada Trail which now travels through Uxbridge, the trail capital of Canada. Mr. Martin was also an original member of Uxbridge Naturally and was consis- tently active in urban growth issues. In 2001 Ms. Kock died in a car accident and Mr. Martin eventually moved to Toron- to. A funeral service will be held at the Low and Low Funeral Home, 23 Main St. South, Uxbridge, on Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flow- ers, donations may be made in Mr. Martin’s memory to Greenpeace Canada and/or Perram House Hospice. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 15, 20114 AP FA CTORY OUTLETSALE! Free Unilock DIY Seminar Saturday, September 17th at 10:00 AM Whitby Location From page 1 “Terry could never have imagined 31 years later we would all be here doing what he started.” Mr. Fox said of the event. “We’re following his leg- acy and keeping his lega- cy alive. I didn’t get to be a part of Terry’s run as much as I hoped I could, because I was off on my own and working. But now when I travel across the country and go to schools I meet students who weren’t even born in 1980 and they know as much about Terry as I do thanks to their teach- ers and their parents. Terry would be so proud.” Pickering has been host- ing an annual Terry Fox Run since 1988, raising about $750,000 to date. “As we sit here today every one of us has been touched in some way by this terri- ble disease,” said Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. “Everything we can do to eradicate this disease is very necessary and should be applauded. I’m looking forward to another won- derful event.” Kevin Cahill, organizer of the Pickering Terry Fox Run, emphasized that it is a family event. “We want to alert every- body and get more people involved,” he said. “This is a family event, you can run, walk, bring your stroller, whatever you want. We would just like to see everyone come out to our run and continue Ter- ry’s dream of eradicating cancer.” Mr. Fox praised Mr. Cahill and fellow volun- teers for their hard work, which has helped the Terry Fox Foundation raise more than $500 million to date from events held across the country. “Whenever our family was recognized for what we do, my Mom would often say that we are just the messengers, the volun- teers are the real heroes,” he said. “Terry wanted to find a cure for cancer and thanks to you we’ve made signifi- cant progress towards that goal.” Mr. Fox left everyone with a quote from his younger brother Terry, something he had said to him shortly before he was forced to cut his run short in Thunder Bay due to spreading can- cer. “That’s the thing about cancer, I’m not the only one. It happens to every- body, I’m not special. I wish people would realize that anything is possible if you try.” Anyone wishing to join the run can come out to the Pickering Recreation Complex on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. Pledge forms can be picked up from any Pickering Recreation facility and can also be found online at www. terryfox.org. Join the run on Sunday Terry could never have imagined 31 years later we would all be here doing what he started. Fred Fox Editorial Opinions Cleaning out the closet, organizing the garage or sorting Facebook friends, they’re all things that occasionally need to be done but no one looks forward to doing them. When I first tried out Google+ one of the big pluses was the circles feature where you could sort your friends into neat little categories like close friends, acquaintanc- es, coworkers or whatever category you come up with. You could then direct your status updates and messages to everyone or just to select circles. Personally, I thought this would be the biggest selling feature of the new social media site because Facebook, in con- trast, is one huge cluster of friends that’s unwieldy and difficult to manage. As it stands, there are options to man- age your friends on Facebook when you click on the Friends link on the left side of the screen. You can use the list to create a custom audience and the lists appear as a drop down on your “most recents” tab so you can choose to see updates from just that list of people. In order to set up lists, I found I had to do a bit of research and read a couple of posts in the Facebook Help Centre. It’s nowhere near as easy to use as Google+ where you just drag and drop people into the circles. According to mashable.com, only about five per cent of Facebook users actually use lists. I think the biggest reason is that most people have no idea that Facebook has options to manage Friends. Instead, they just grit their teeth and wonder why the people they most often see in their news feed are the people they’re least interested in hearing from. For people with very large networks, it’s quite cumbersome to manage the lists. You have to check who is on what list and it’s easy to forget to add people to lists as you receive new Facebook friend requests. When creating a Google+ account, we’re starting from scratch and automatically sorting all our contacts. With Facebook we have to make the effort go back and sort folks. Now, mashable.com is reporting that Facebook is testing new options for man- aging friends. The website has posted screen caps of the new options and you can look for a link to them on my Face- book page. Among the potential changes are friend filters in the news feed where it’s easier to click a particular list to get their news and the addition of smart lists. With smart lists, users wouldn’t have to sort their friends, Facebook would slot them into pre-existing categories like co- workers, school mates and people who live near you, saving you time. Like Google+, a new feature allows you to share status updates with specific lists. As with other changes to Facebook, if they implement these, I expect users to be prompted and informed about the chang- es when they log in, making people aware of the new options. Even with all that, I think those of us with large Facebook friends lists will have to log some time sorting everyone out. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Thursday in this space. At a tour of the suite in Ajax last week, guests who helped bring the MRI device to the local hospital had a chance to see for themselves what’s in store for patients. Magnetic resonance imaging gives good contrast between the different soft tissues of the body, so it’s a valuable tool in imag- ing, for example, the brain and the heart. Make no mistake, having this machine in Ajax-Pickering is a huge coup. “This is state of the art and it’s only the second such machine to be installed in Canada,” said Jeff Hohenkerk, director of diagnostic imaging and laboratory medi- cine. He also noted that the machine can and has already attracted exceptional medical staff, from Toronto’s Mt. Sinai Hospital, for example, and from as far away as Har- vard in the U.S. Big and small, donations came in to support the Community Campaign for an MRI, a sub-committee of the Rouge Val- ley Health System Foundation’s Image is Everything campaign. The Town of Ajax and City of Pickering each pledged $500,000 to the effort. Ajax’s Picov fam- ily contributed $100,000. The Pickering East Shore Community Association came through with $2,000 and a bake sale at Lincoln Avenue Public School resulted in $350. And it continues. But this is as much about the patient experience at the hospital as it is about the machine itself. The MRI machine is faster, quieter and has a bigger dough- nut hole than other such devices to make the experience less claustrophobic. It fea- tures detachable tables to make the prep- ping and transition from one patient to another easier. The MRI suite boasts wider doors, accessible change rooms, a radiologist’s office and an interview room. There’s even a faux skylight over the MRI table, soothing patients’ nerves with an image of a blue sky with flowering trees. For those who have had to travel dis- tances to access a similar device, it’s fan- tastic to have the machine here. The community campaign to pay for the machine is ongoing. So far, more than $4 million of the $5 million goal has been donated. To donate, call the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation office at 905- 683-2320, ext. 1501, e-mail rougeMRI@ rougevalley.ca or learn more by visiting www.rougeMRI.ca. -- Pickering News Advertiser durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 15, 20117 AP HTC Sensation TM 4G superphone 99953$ with a $50 voiceand data plan 3-yr. term No term 54995$ SAVE $450 $ Samsung Galaxy S IITM 4G superphone 169953 with a $50 voiceand data plan 3-yr. term No term 59995$ SAVE $430 BONUS :Switch to Bell and get a $75 in-store credit on all superphones2.New activations only. Older animals need love too Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com Is there anything more reward- ing than a senior pet’s grateful look when they’re given a second chance at life? Humane Society of Durham Region president Karin Martens doesn’t know of much that can match it. “You love them with all your heart and they just give it back a hun- dredfold,” she says. Each time I write a story on upcoming adoption promotions for local animal shelters, volun- teers almost always mention that although kittens and puppies are cute, older pets need homes too. Whether it’s taking an older dog on a leisurely stroll or providing a senior cat with a comfortable spot in the house, these animals are grateful for their new homes after spending time at the shelter. “We have animals that are between five and 10,” Ms. Mar- tens says. “We have animals that are between 10 and 15. We’ve had some animals come in that are 17.” It’s heartbreaking when senior pets are abandoned by their own- ers. “They will sit there and they will look like ‘What did I do wrong’?” she says. “And they will wait for their owner to come back.” Since that doesn’t usually hap- pen, Ms. Martens says it’s delightful when someone decides to adopt a senior pet, especially when they’re nearing the end of their life. “For two or three years, they will be loved,” she says. “They’re going to make a tremendous difference and that animal is going to love them tremendously.” Many senior pets -- often clas- sified as six or older -- can live for years anyway. “Just because something is con- sidered a senior doesn’t mean you’re not going to have it for a long time,” says Ruby Richards, Durham Humane Society public relations co-ordinator. Ms. Richards notes senior dogs are often the ones volunteers have most fun with. “They’re still full of life, they still like to go on walks, but are less has- sle,” she says, adding they’re often housebroken, easy to walk and more sociable than puppies. Many organizations promote seniors adopting senior pets. Some seniors I have spoken to in the past have said they’d love a pet, but they’re afraid to outlive them. Ms. Richards says not only could a puppy or kitten outlive an elder- ly owner, but they can be a lot of work. “(Senior pets) are usually more relaxed, laid back, easy going, so a senior especially, who might be concerned about a playful dog, that’s an ideal way to go,” she says. Ms. Richards notes there are always exceptions to the rule, and that’s why the Humane Society is careful to match humans with the right pet. Similarly, she wouldn’t saddle a frail person with a large older dog who requires frequent veterinary care, or a family with a young and energetic kid with an elderly dog who prefers a relaxed environment. It’s also important to ensure seniors have a good support sys- tem if they do pass away or go into a nursing home so the animals don’t end up back at the shelter. Ms. Richards finds that once someone chooses to adopt a senior pet -- whether they’re young or old themselves -- they’re hooked on older animals for life. “They seem to know they’ve been given a second chance and they really appreciate it,” she says. Right now, more than half of the animals living at the Humane Soci- ety are seniors. Call 905-665-7430 to see if a senior pet is right for you.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 15, 20118 AP 1445 Harmony Rd./Taunton E., Oshawa (Grooming Available)905-725-9225 300 Taunton Rd./Ritson Rd.,Oshawa905-433-5564 1 Warren Ave., Oshawa905-571-6235 TM A bald eagle here, a few turkey vultures there, a northern harrier ... Reports of migrating raptors have been trickling in for a few weeks already, starting with the sighting of a dozen ospreys way back in August. Friends and I walking the Water- front Trail last week had a sharp- shinned hawk flutter low over our heads, heading west. But Mother Nature is about to open the taps full blast for one of the most spectacular annual events in Durham Region: broad-winged hawk migration. These brown- streaked residents of northern for- ests are slightly smaller than our familiar open-country red-tailed hawks, but have the same classic buteo-family shape: wide wings and short tail. You can recognize broad-wings almost as much by their actions as their silhouette, for in mid-Septem- ber, when the winds are right, they all take off together, great flocks of them heading for South America. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to see 100 hawks in a single hour, 1,000 in a day? I’ll never forget standing on the hawk watch tower at the north- east corner of Heber Down Con- servation Area and counting near- ly 5,000 fly past along the ancient Lake Iroquois shoreline, some right overhead, some mere dots in the sky. The platform, with its dramat- ic view, is reached by trail from the intersection of Ashburn and Spen- cer’s roads. Other raptor species spread their departure out over weeks or months. Like ruby-throats, mon- archs and darners, migrating hawks often move south to Lake Ontar- io and follow the shoreline west instead of heading out across the water. Any stretch of Waterfront Trail is good for spotting them; just look up! The south viewing plat- form on the west side of Cranberry Marsh, off Halls Road in Whitby, serves as hawk watch central for a daily count of passing raptors through to the end of November. With the financial support of TD Green Streets, staff have planned a small arboretum, with 28 different species of native deciduous and coniferous trees and native shrubs. The new facility will serve as a lasting legacy of Pickering’s Bicentennial Year and have an educational focus, with local schools and community organizations invited to participate and provide future care for the trees. The number of trees proposed for the site is equal to the number of schools in Pickering, and each school will become a steward for one tree. A plaque will be installed at the base of each tree naming the species and the steward school. The park officially opens Tuesday, September 27 at 1:00 pm.All are welcome. A public opinion poll conduct- ed by Angus Reid on behalf of the Ontario Convenience Stores Association in July found that 60 per cent of Ontarians sup- port expanding the province’s alcohol retailing system to allow beer and wine to be sold by a greater variety of retailers. “Ontario voters are simply asking for more convenience,” said Dave Bryans, president of the association, in a statement about the study. “That’s not a lot to ask. When as many as two out of every three adults in Ontario support beer and wine in convenience stores, it will be interesting to see what candidates from all parties tell voters. It’s time Ontario’s alcohol retailing system was expanded beyond the LCBO and The Beer Store and we’re asking everyone over 19 to visit www.freeourbeer. ca to register their support.” The Free Our Beer petition is available online and at many convenience store locations across the province. Pickering-Scarborough East candidates are weighing in on the issue in the run-up to the Oct. 6 provincial election. PC candidate Kevin Gaud- et said a PC government would increase market access to Ontar- io’s VQA wines, although he wouldn’t elaborate on what that might entail. “There are a number of ways that could be undertaken, but we’ll worry about that after the election,” he said. “We’ve been hearing a lot from our growers that they’re being squeezed out by the LCBO sys- tem. It would be nice if they had an equal playing field so consumers could have access to these great products that are right on our doorstep.” A Green government would also expand retail alcohol sales to meet consumer demand and support small businesses. “The Green Party strongly agrees with this initiative, which would open markets to small- er craft breweries and wineries, bringing greater choice and ser- vice to our local communities,” said Green candidate Kevin Smith, cautioning that expand- ed sales would require increased education and a revamping of the LCBO in order for it to stay competitive in the new market. “I would want to be assured that any move towards bring- ing these purchases into con- venience stores come with strict penalties for proprietors who might inadvertently sell to underage drinkers. “ We also need to balance extra convenience with the respon- sibility to ensure that this does not increase alcohol addiction by providing greater awareness around responsible drinking and increased funding for pro- grams that help alleviate alcohol addiction.” NDP candidate Nerissa Carino said an NDP government would focus on other issues that are more important to voters. “We have no intention of allowing beer to be sold at cor- ner stores, we’re more interest- ed in talking about the things people are telling us are impor- tant to them,” she said, high- lighting issues including health care, HST and job creation. “They’re telling us that they’re struggling to make ends meet. We need change that makes life more affordable for them by tak- ing the HST off daily essentials including hydro, home heating and gasoline while shifting the tax burden onto corporations that have already gotten gener- ous breaks.” Liberal candidate Tracy Mac- Charles said the status quo seems to be serving Ontarians well. “At this time, I believe that the current system achieves an appropriate balance for con- sumers and encourages respon- sible drinking practices,” she said. “I believe that people in our area are well served by the cur- rent retail system for beer and liquor. Where alcohol is more easily available, traffic accidents and health concerns increase. Public safety must be the top priority.” ryan pfeIffer / Metroland PICKERING -- Nada Kamal, who owns the Hasty Market on Finch Avenue near Rosebank Road, held a copy of the “Free our Beer” petition at his store. Customers are signing the petiton in favour of allowing convenience stores to sell beer and wine. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 15, 201113 AP CASH In Y o u r Old a n d Broken GOLD CASH In Y o u r Old a n d Broken GOLD WE WILL PURCHASE ITEMS SUCH AS: CHAINS • EARRINGS • RINGS • BRACELETS • MEDALLIONS • DENTAL GOLD • BROOCHES • DIAMONDS • EMERALDS • RUBIES • BROKEN GOLD/SILVER/PLATINUM • CLASS RINGS • GOLD CHARMS • SILVER FRI • SAT • SUN SEPTEMBER 16, 17, 18 • 10AM-7PM Ajax Cash Converters 95 Bayly Street W. Health & Wellness ADVERTISING FEATURE Fall Registration 2011 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and signifies a time for women to think about their annual breast screening. While there are varying mammogram guidelines from different organizations, Dr. Sandhya Pruthi, a Winnipeg native who studies breast cancer at Mayo Clinic, recommends a three-tiered approach: • Breast health awareness—woman becoming familiar with her breasts in order to identify breast abnormalities or changes, and to inform her doctor of any changes that may need further evaluation; • Clinical breast exam—performed by a health care provider and recommended Stay on top of breast cancer screening annually beginning at age 40; • Screening mammography— beginning at age 40. Screening mammograms can detect early breast abnormali ties. Findings from a study in Sweden of more than one million women in their 40s, who received screening mammograms, showed a decrease in breast cancer deaths by 29 per cent. It's important to remember that most women who get breast cancer have no family history or other known risk fac- tors for the disease. Screening mammography is not a perfect exam. But it is the best available tool to detect can- cer early, which can lead to bet- ter options and possibly less ag- gressive treatments. If you're concerned about screening mammograms, talk to your doctor and learn what's right for you based on your in- dividual risks. It's important that the two of you work together to develop a screening plan. When stepping up to the plate, many mantras run through a bat- ter's mind as they aim for that elu- sive home run. “Keep your elbows in,” “bend your knees,” and most important of all, “keep your eye on the ball.” Not only should this last gem be repeated on the diamond, it's also something Canadian men need to apply when it comes to their health! In order to score big in the game of health, one of the “balls” men need to keep an eye on is their prostate. The average healthy pros- tate is comparable in size to a golf ball. However, as men age, it may start to get bigger. According to the recent Keep Your Eye On The Ball Poll supported by the Canadian Urological Association via a grant from GlaxoSmithKline, 65 per cent of Canadian men 50 or over were shocked to learn a prostate could get as large as a softball. An enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) im- pacts 50 per cent of Canadian men over 50. The symptoms include frequent urination (at night and/or during the day), inability to empty the bladder completely, or a weak urine stream. The symptoms can be very uncomfortable and can have a serious impact on quality of life. If left unchecked, it can progress and potentially lead to worsening symptoms, an overall decreased quality of life, and the need for in- vasive surgery. The good news is lifestyle changes like limiting evening fluid intake can help, and there are treat- ments available to help manage the symptoms, shrink the prostate and reduce the incidence of future complications. The bad news is that 70 per cent of Canadian men have never heard of BPH and a quarter of them have never discussed their prostate or BPH symptoms with their doctor. Canadian men need to recognize that just because BPH symptoms can be a normal part of aging, they don't have to suffer with them. When men reach the age of 50, they should begin getting a prostate exam annually and, no matter what their age, be proactive in bring- ing up any BPH-related symptoms with their doctor. In terms of treat- ment, patients should take an ac- tive role and ask about options that manage their symptoms and help shrink the prostate. A.Au ditory deprivation refers to a person’s lack of adequate hearing stimulation. Untreated hearing loss is auditory deprivation. With auditory deprivation, the brain gradually loses some of its information processing ab ility. In other words, the ab ility to process speech declines due to a lack of stimulation. Q.Is treating auditory deprivation important? A. Absolutely! The sooner you get hearing aids, the better. The human body operates like the old expression “if yo u don’t use it,yo u’ll lose it”. The auditory system,yo ur ability to hear and understand speech, is no different! The body’s various systems –bones, muscular, sensory will weaken with prolonged non-use.When you get an injury such as breaking your hand, the physiotherapists give you rehabilitation exercises. It has been proven that the sooner yo u get to work on rehabilitating your hand, the faster yo ur recovery period. Similarly with HEARING: Hearing rehabilitation involves amplification. Getting your ears “to hear”as soon as possible will allow you greater success in hearing and processing the world around you. Q.How do I avoid auditory deprivation? A. The key to av oiding auditory deprivation is to keep the auditory system active and not to let it stay dormant. Many individuals with hearing loss wait many years before trying hearing aids. The sooner yo u wear hearing aids when hearing loss is first detected, the Better! Call one of our clinics To day to schedule your hearing test and FREE HEARING demonstration. The Suburban Newspa- pers of America recently announced its 2011 awards for websites, promotions and advertising and Metro- land Durham's contribu- tions were front and cen- tre. "With a vibrant region and seven contributing news- papers, www.durhamre- gion.com has a lot to offer, from traffic cameras to local news to a daily deals prod- uct, and much more," reads an excerpt from the judge's comments. Digital Content Manager Ken Pearson said awards like this wouldn’t be pos- sible without the great team at Metroland Media Group’s Durham Region Division. “The diversity of our region required us to create an online product that has something for everyone -- video, photography, pets, editorials, letters, news, what’s on and more – all in a package that was user- friendly and visually com- pelling,” he says. “We made durhamre- gion.com the go-to place for everything that affects the people of this region.” The 10th anniversary edi- tion of Faces of the Future was another big winner, named Best Young Person's Publication. The annual Faces of the Future publication profiled more than 3,000 outstand- ing elementary and high school students before wrapping up with the 10th anniversary edition. The former national champion in both the long and triple jumps has been sidelined the entire year after a bad ankle injury suffered back in January left her unable to compete. The injury came during a training session at York University when she didn’t hit an elevat- ed board just right, rolling her ankle and tak- ing off from the board on the side of her right foot. Initially thought to have been sprained because of the swelling, it was later found that she tore all the ligaments in her ankle right from the bone. “This kind of injury is very bad. It’s a very bad injury, but I can still come back from it,” she says optimistically. “I’m trying to be posi- tive.” What followed were a cast and crutches for eight weeks and extensive physiotherapy. The 26 year old also went back to school to take some courses in a human resource program, adding to the degree she already received from her scholarship at the University of Miami after graduating from Pine Ridge Sec- ondary School. On the upside, Charles was able to take a summer off, something that competing nationally and internationally has prevented her from doing for a number of years. In addi- tion to spending time with family and friends, she bought a costume and took part in the Caribana festival, as well as visited Africa. The time off from training, travelling and competing afforded her the opportunity for some reflection. “It’s going to rejuvenate my drive for sure,” she vows. “I’m really motivated now. Some- times you get lazy and you don’t want to go to practice. “It’s actually a blessing in disguise as I got to enjoy my life as a non-athlete. I got to enjoy life, have fun.” Training resumed just last week, but inter- nal questions still remain about her future, especially with next year being an Olympic year. “I wish I knew for sure, but I don’t,” she says when asked if her ankle will be ready to go. “All I can do is take it one step at a time, one month at a time. Will my foot heal? Will I have no pain? “My goal is definitely 2012 Olympics. That’s what I’m prepping for. That’s what all my focus is on right now. All I can do is wait and see.” Charles was a double gold medallist in both the long jump and triple jump at the Cana- dian championships in 2006, 2007 and 2010. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, she advanced to the final round of 12, finish- ing 10th overall. News Advertiser file PhOtO PICKERING -- There weren’t any medals like the ones Pickering’s Tabia Charles won at the Canadian track and field championships last year, winning gold in both the long and triple jump. An ankle injury in January prevented her from competitng this year. BAdmiNtON Yakura reaches bronze medal game Pickering resident has long run at youth Games DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN -- Pickering’s Nyl Yakura finished just out of the medals while rep- resenting Canada in badmin- ton at the Commonwealth Youth Games on the Isle of Man. The Canadian men’s doubles team of Yakura and Nathan Choi lost 2-1 to India in a close bronze medal match. The duo advanced to the game to decide third place after beating Scotland (21- 14, 21-10) and Australia (21-9, 21-11), but lost in the semifinals to Malaysia (21-17, 21-11). In singles, Yakura got through to the round of 16 after beating an opponent from Uganda 21-8, 21-8, but lost to an opponent from India 21-18, 21-15. In mixed doubles, Yakura and partner Wan-Ting Tsai put a cou- ple of wins on the board to get to the quarter-finals before los- ing. They beat a team from South Africa (21-11, 21-10) and Guern- sey (21-8, 21-10), but the run ended with a loss to a team from Malaysia (21-17, 13-21, 16-21). The multi-sport Games brought together top athletes aged 14 to 18 from 69 Commonwealth nations and territories. Canadian athletes competed in six sports, including athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics and rugby 7s. Next on the schedule for Yakura is a trip to the Belgian Open Sept. 15-17, with the 2011 world junior championships in Taiwan also on the schedule. Another local resident, Ajax’s James Bradley, was also at the Commonwealth Youth Games serving as the Chef de Mission. cOlleGe Opening of Durham Lords’ soccer season postponed TORONTO -- As the Community Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology support staff strike continues, another round of postponements to athletics events has occurred. A host of men’s soccer games were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday night, including one involving the Durham Lords men’s team against George Brown, however, they will not go on as planned. Neither will games on the women’s soccer cir- cuit, originally slated for Tuesday and Wednes- day. Durham’s women’s team was slated to play Loyalist Wednesday night. Games in men’s and women’s rugby at other schools have also been put on the side burner for now. According to a release from the Ontario Col- leges Athletic Association, another announce- ment regarding more postponed games will come by today at noon should the strike con- tinue. The OCAA also has a Sept. 28 deadline in place, whereby if no resolution to the strike has been reached, they will begin a modified sched- ule for all its fall sports. At this point, as stated in the release, the OCAA does not plan, at this time, to cancel any of the fall seasons. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 15, 201121 AP Ajax & Pickering Locations 279 Kingston Rd.
