DURHAM -- A Durham organization has
been recognized as one of the best-run
non-profits in the country by the Fraser
Institute.
Ajax-based Girls Inc. of Durham delivers
programs throughout the region and was
named one of the top three finalists in the
education category of the Donner Awards
recently. As a finalist the organization is in
the running for a $60,000 prize.
The awards are administered by the Fraser
Institute on behalf of the Donner Canadian
Foundation and they recognize non-profit
organizations which excel in service deliv-
ery despite limited budgets.
Niels Veldhuis, vice-president of research
for the Fraser Institute, said each of the
non-profits were scored on a number of dif-
ferent metrics and compared to their peers.

Document will prevent
Fernie House from operating
detention centre in future

PICKERING -- Residents of Pickering’s Rosebank
Road community are celebrating after reaching
an agreement with Fernie House to prevent the
operation of any open custody detention centres
in the future.
Fernie House, which is located in a residen-
tial area across from Rosebank Road Public
school and a public playground, transferred
young offenders out of its facility after residents
expressed concern at a public meeting on Aug. 8
with having an open custody detention centre so
close to a school and playground.
Residents formed a working group at the meet-
ing to work with Fernie House staff to find a reso-
lution to their concerns, and the group met for
the first time on Tuesday.
During that meeting the residents’ group asked
for a memorandum of understanding from Fern-
ie House waiving its right to operate an open cus-
tody detention centre at the Rosebank facility.
Fernie House agreed to the request and pledged
to have a draft document to the group by Friday,
Aug. 26.
“A lot of people feel very relieved, they feel like
they’ve won something,” said John McArthur,
spokesman for the working group, which con-
sists of 22 local residents.
“We will look at the draft memorandum and
then send it back with our thoughts, but Fernie
House is on the up and up, they are quite hon-
ourable about what they are trying to change.”
The meeting also looked at possible future uses
for the facility, which is being used as administra-
tion offices until a new program can be installed.
Some of the suggestions included a day-care cen-
tre, seniors’ facility, a facility for children with
special needs, child welfare latency programs
and a hospice.
“I’m getting a lot of response from the com-
munity about what they want,” Mr. McArthur
said, noting that he expects the working group
will meet with Fernie House officials within the
next month to discuss possible programs for the
space.
At an open house on Aug. 15 Patrick Reber,
executive director of Fernie House, said that
there was no set timeline for when a new pro-
gram might be installed at the facility, and that
he hoped to work with the community to find
something suitable.
“My hope is that the working group will form
into a community advisory committee and con-

PICKERING -- Linda Tsoulis spoke with
Karen Haw from Fernie House, a home
for young offenders. The facility hosted
an open house Aug. 15 for neighbours
who are upset about having the facil-
ity in their neighbourhood. The facility’s
staff has since agreed to a memo-
randum of understanding to waive
the right to operate an open custody
detention centre at Fernie House.

Protesters kept well away
Keith GilliGan
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
COURTICE -- With about 50 protesters
kept well back, the ground-breaking cer-
emony for the incinerator went ahead
Wednesday morning.
Protesters had to park about 1.5 kilometres
away from the Osborne Road site in Courtice.
A contingent of Durham Regional Police offi-
cers kept incinerator opponents from enter-
ing the 12-hectare property, which is imme-
diately north of the Courtice Water Pollution
Control Plant.
James Simpson, 14, of Clarington, said he
was at the protest “because I’m disgusted by
the actions of my mayor, Adrian Foster.
Tia Woodcroft, a former teacher and school
board trustee, said she’s been “fighting this
incinerator for a number
of years. I’m fighting for
the children.”
Durham has a goal of
diverting 70 per cent of
waste, but Ms. Woodcroft
said, “They won’t get to
that goal because of this.”
“I don’t like it,” said Shir-
ley Cargo, whose family
owns 110 acres near the
facility. “I haven’t any desire to move. I don’t
know where to go.”
She noted her husband has lived on the
land all his life. “Between the two of us, we’ve
had it a good, long time. I don’t want to move,
but what am I going to do?” she continued.
About 100 people attended the ground-
breaking, including officials from Durham
and York regions, and Covanta Energy -- the
company that will design, build and operate
the $272-million facility.
Durham Regional Chairman Roger Ander-
son said the facility will “mark a major mile-
stone in waste management.”
Getting to the ground-breaking was a six-
year process and “finally we’re ready to put
the shovel in this ground,” he stated.
The facility will burn about 110,000 tonnes
of trash from Durham and 30,000 tonnes
from York and will operate for 25 to 30 years.
The regions undertook an extensive and
public review before approving the facility in
2009. Mr. Anderson noted the environmen-
tal assessment was then sent to the Province,
which took 18 months to review and approve
it. “It’s clear and obvious the Province of
Ontario put a lot of work into this. They took
this decision very seriously,” he stated.
“We couldn’t have done this without the
support of the Ministry of the Environment.
They were with us every step of the way. I
want to thank the minister of the environment
for his vigilance and guidance,” he added.
The facility “will meet the toughest air emis-
sion standards in the world,” Mr. Anderson
noted. “This is a proven technology that’s so
well known and so well used in Europe and
the United States,” said York Region Chair-
man Bill Fisch. “It’s a very smart investment
for both Durham and York.”
“A project like this will only succeed with
public officials who have the courage to see
it through,” said Anthony Orlando, the presi-
dent and CEO of Covanta Energy. “This will
be the model for everyone else to follow. The
Region is setting the model for everyone else
to follow.”
In an interview, Mr. Anderson was asked
what he would say to protesters.
“When it comes to garbage, you can’t please
everybody. No matter what you do, not every-
one will be pleased,” he stated.
He said the regions have spent seven years
working on the project. “We’re building what
we promised the residents, the best of the
best. We have to do something with our gar-
bage,” he added.

Waste
Incinerator supporters
should be made
to live next to it
To the editor:
Regarding plans to construct a large waste
incineration plant in Durham Region,
despite the grave financial and health risks
posed by waste incineration.
Here’s a novel antidote to the blithe
assurances we are constantly being given
by those in government and big business
that there is nothing to worry about: Pro-
ponents of waste incineration should be
required by law to live next door to the risk-
source they are promoting. (The same goes
for nuclear fission, coal-burning genera-
tors, the exporting of asbestos, and a host
of other recklessly dangerous undertak-
ings.)
And, they should also be held personally
liable by law for any damages arising from
the project they are promoting -- with-
out any quantitative cap to said liability or
any statute of limitations to let them off the
hook after a passage of time.

The kindness of strangers
helped after fall
To the editor:
I am writing this letter to say thank you to
all the people who assisted me when I fell
on Aug. 2.
I was walking home from Sobeys in the
Whitby Mall when I stubbed my toe in a
hole on the sidewalk and fell.
Immediately somebody came to my
assistance.
I don’t know what you look like or who
you are but I want you to know I appreciate
all you did for me.
I know there were a lot of people around
me as I heard the voices.
Thank you to the person who called the
ambulance and thank you to the EMS per-
sonnel who helped me at the scene, in the
ambulance and upon my arrival at the hos-
pital.
Unfortunately, that fall resulted in a bro-
ken wrist, fractured rib and fractured toe.
It is going to be a long recovery but I
couldn’t go without saying thank you to
all the people who helped me on that day.
Your kindness and generosity will never be
forgotten.

elton John concert
Happy ending to
this ticket quest
To the editor:
Re: Elton John tickets.
I have been reading the letters from the
sore losers who were unable to get tickets
to the concert.
I don’t believe that I was the only one
aware that the demand far exceeded the
supply and not everyone would get tick-
ets.
I started my attempt for the tickets with
two computers up and running and two
telephones dialling and redialling. At 10:03
a.m.
I was able to obtain eight tickets for
myself and my family. No tickets will be
“scalped”.
So, to address the query about how
many “locals” were able to get tickets,
rest assured my family, all of whom live in
Clarington, did get tickets.
As for the recent comment about limit-
ing ticket sales only to people who want to
line up many hours before the box office
opens, it is a totally unreasonable sugges-
tion, as most people work all day and are
only able to use either the phone or Inter-
net.
I will be enjoying the concert and would
have been disappointed had I not gotten
tickets however I would not be expressing
my “sour” attitude to anyone who will lis-
ten if I hadn’t.

A done deal and a healthy democracy in Durham Region
The persistent controversy surrounding
Durham Region’s energy-from-waste incin-
erator followed Durham politicians to Clar-
ington Wednesday as officials broke ground
on the multi-million dollar facility.
Given the years of acrimonious divi-
sion over the project, security was tight at
the ceremonial ground-breaking to keep a
vocal group of protesters separate from dig-
nitaries taking part. Protesters used bull-
horns and carried placards expressing their
opposition to the incinerator project to little
effect, but can claim victory in continuing
to bring public scrutiny while underscor-
ing the need for keen oversight as the facility
takes shape.
It’s important to note, however, that the
project will continue according to the dem-
ocratic vote taken by regional councillors
and the binding legal agreements signed
by Durham and Covanta, the firm that will
build and operate the energy-from-waste
facility. In that context, there are some fun-
damental and positive things that contin-
ue to occur in relation to the project. The
active and abiding opposition to the plan is
indicative of a healthy democracy where the
freedom to express dissent is deeply held. It
underscores the foundation on which our
society has been built and gives voice to
those who disagree.
And, has been noted here in the past,
much could be gained if the considerable
energy expended in fighting the plan was
redirected into ensuring that Covanta lives
up to every single condition outlined in the
official agreements. A good start might be to
focus on the total particulate matter emis-
sions and ensure that monitoring is rigorous
and meeting targets.
Durham Region and Clarington municipal
officials must meet their respective obliga-
tions in terms of official oversight, but pub-
lic scrutiny, persistent engagement in devel-
oping issues and active participation by
the larger public will provide an extra layer
of protection for area residents. In build-
ing its controversial facility here at home,
Covanta becomes a corporate citizen in the
community and must work to keep citizens
informed, meet its operational mandate in
terms of air quality and ensure there is no
adverse impact on the health and welfare of
nearby residents.
As the saying goes, this is a done deal. The
facility will be built and begin accepting
waste in 2014. But that isn’t to suggest that
ongoing public engagement and opposition
should wane. Combined efforts by various
governments and knowledgeable, affected
local residents will ensure that the facility is
operating as it should without affecting the
people who call Clarington and Durham
Region home.

PICKERINGPICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURE Summer is here and after spending more
time outside and opening your windows to let in
some fresh air, you’ve noticed that they are old,
ugly or just in rough shape.
It may be tempting to pick
up some windows and install them
yourself, but you may find that
you’re not getting the highest quality
windows and the installation is trickier
than it seems.
Even if you buy the best
windows on the market, if they are
not installed and sealed properly,
they essentially become worthless.
“If a window or door is
not installed properly, you can get
drafts coming into the house,” explains Wayne
Hutchinson, owner of Durham Windows and
Doors. “I often get calls from people who have
tried to install windows themselves or have used
a friend or family member to come out and fix the
installation.”
Homeowners can save themselves the cost
and trouble by having their windows and doors
done properly the first time. Specializing
only in windows and doors, Wayne and
his staff have earned a reputation for their
great work.
Wayne will come to your house to
measure and will bring with him samples
of the windows that he has available.
Not only can you shop from the comfort
of your own home, but you can also see
exactly how the windows will look.
“After being in this business for 34 years,
I can honestly say these are the finest
windows on the market,” says Wayne.
“They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and
come with heavy duty hardware.”
All of the windows come with a lifetime
warranty on the frame, hardware and glass.
Homeowners may also be tempted to
hire a company that
is willing to work
under the table.
The problem is that
while they may save
money short-term,
it could cost them
everything in the
long run. If a worker
is not insured and
gets injured in your
home, you are liable. Fly by night companies
also won’t be around to honour warranties or
help with any issues that come up.
All of the installers at Durham Windows
and Doors are staff, not subcontractors, are fully
insured and have their WSIB certificates.
Durham Windows and Doors is located
at 696 King Street West in Oshawa.

All of the almost 600 non-profits that
applied will get a report on how they
scored.
The metrics include topics such as
board governance, financial manage-
ment, how much of their budget is spent
on programs versus total spending and
whether they have income indepen-
dence.
“How many donors do they have,
what’s the revenue given by the largest
donor, how sustainable is their donor
base?”
The non-profits also need to have a
clear vision statement, transparency and
must have make good use of volunteers.
“Of all of the organizations that applied,
the three in the education category were
the standouts when we averaged all the
different metrics,” said Mr. Veldhuis.
Girls Inc. executive director Yvette
Nechvatal-Drew said she was happy
her organization was recognized. She
said she thinks Girls Inc. has a clear
and strong vision in inspiring girls to be
strong, smart and bold and to build on
their own strengths.
“We don’t all want to be like one indi-
vidual stereotype,” she said.
Girls Inc. serves girls aged 16 to 18 and
delivers programs in school classrooms,
after-school programs and summer and
March break camps. The programs focus
on topics such as self-confidence build-
ing, promoting math, science and read-
ing and delivering anti-bullying messag-
es.
A single-gender environment lets Girls
Inc. focus on reaching girls in the way
that best works for them. For example,
Ms. Nechvatal-Drew points out that the
phrase ‘sticks and stones can break my
bones but names will never hurt me’
isn’t true.
Girls who bully each other often do so
verbally and through exclusion, perhaps
making comments about another girl’s
physical appearance or rubbing it in that
a girl wasn’t invited to a birthday party.
One way girls at the summer camp
build confidence is by having G-mail, a
poster where other girls write positive
messages to their friends.
“At the end of the day, the girls have 20
or more positive, self-affirming messag-
es,” said Ms. Nechvatal-Drew.
Strengths for Girls Inc. include a strong
board with members who bring differ-
ent professional skills to the table and is
reflective of the diverse community and
dedicated volunteers and donors.
The funding for Girls Inc. is a mix of
grants from the federal, provincial and
municipal governments, the United Way
and individual and corporate donors.
Last year Girls Inc. served 902 girls
through their signature programs, 2,255
girls through public workshops and
events and had 3,143 visits from young
women through the Canadian Prenatal
Nutrition Program.
Girls Inc. has just four full-time staff
members and about 15 part-time
employees, many who work during peak
periods including summer.
At a recent summer camp in Pickering,
the benefits of the organization were
clear as girls participated in an activity
where a paper doll with positive messag-
es was cut up. They recognized cutting
words can easily destroy positive mes-
sages and were taught how to respond
when someone said something demean-
ing to them.
Nine-year-old McKenna Warwick, of
Ajax, has spent several weeks this sum-
mer at the Girls Inc. Pickering summer
camp and this is her third year with the
organization.
“I like that sometimes we get to talk
about our feelings and not get bullied
a lot and we have a lot of fun,” she said,
adding it’s very easy to make friends.
McKenna said her G-mail said she was
a talented girl who loved to sing and
dance.
“It makes me feel very special because
sometimes I’m shy and I like to keep my
talent to myself,” she said.
For Pickering’s Stephanie Garner, 12,
this is her first year at Girls Inc. She just
moved to Canada from Australia and
said she met new friends through Girls
Inc. “It’s a safe environment and every-
one’s nice,” she said.
Her favourite activities are the games
and the crafts and she said she loves
going to the splash pad on Fridays.
Programs co-ordinator Jen Nash said
she’s seen huge positive changes in
some of the girls over the past four years
and explained that the program wasn’t
about excluding men or boys, but about
helping to strengthen girls.
“We recognize that for a couple of
hours a week or one week a summer,
girls should be allowed to have time
to explore issues that are important to
them.”

How much is your jewellery worth in

There are many factors affecting the

beyond the gold pricing, Marcus and

demand for fine quality jewellery, larger
diamonds and antique pieces that are in

If you think the end of summer means your vegeta-ble gardening days are done, you’ll need to reconsider. The weeks when summer fades into fall are actually an opportune time to plant cool-weather crops. Fall is a great time of year for planting vegetables. Some of nature’s most nutritious greens and veggies thrive in cooler temperatures. Planting them now, at summer’s end, can ensure a bountiful fall harvest. Plus you’ll save a bundle by avoiding the produce aisle in your grocery store for a few more months. The sunny, cooler weather of autumn is perfect for many vegetables. With increased rainfall and tempera-tures ranging between 60 and 80 degrees in the day and higher than 40 at night, your plants suffer less, increasing your likelihood of good harvest. You can even cope with frost; some hardy vegetables can thrive without frost protection, and covering less resistant plants when frost threatens can keep them thriving. The secrets of successful fall planting don’t differ much from the techniques you’ve used during high season. Cool crops will need at least six hours of sun daily, ample water and a steady supply of much-needed nutrients. You can get a jump-start by planting transplants. Seed germination of cool crops during late summer requires much attention to detail. Transplants are a quicker, easier route to ensure success. Bonnie Plants, the largest producer of vegetables and herbs in North America, offers some quick tips for picking the right plants for your fall garden:
• Choose fast-growing, leafy cool crops like broc-coli, Swiss chard, lettuce, kale, spinach, collards and arugula. Leafy vegetables are actually harder to grow in the summer, when the heat can cause them to “bolt,” forming fl owers and seeds. Bolting leaves ed-ible portions tasting bitter. You could choose to plant two rounds of these vegetables, in spring and again in late summer. • Don’t delay. Ideally, you should plant your fall crops before the end of August, although if you miss that window, it doesn’t mean you can’t still have a successful fall harvest. • Pick a place. Your existing garden is the perfect place to plant cool weather crops. Remember, frost fl ows downhill like water, so spots at the top of a slope or in south-facing locations will remain warmest. • Know how they grow. Pay close attention to “days to maturity” information listed on plant tags. You’ll want to give plants enough time to produce before killing frost arrives. • Good gardening practices will get your fall gar-den growing. Loosen soil before you plant and mix in some all-natural fertilizer, like Bonnie Plants Herb and Vegetable Plant Food. Made from soybean oilseed extract, this food contains 150,000 nutritional and vi-tal organic compounds including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, plant hormones and carbohydrates.

Laughs aplenty
at first-ever event
running Sept. 10
to 17 in Oshawa
Keith GiLLiGan
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- Sides will be splitting
this September when the first-
ever Durham Region Comedy
Festival kicks off.
The festival runs from Sept. 10 to
17, with one of the features being
a show with Randy and Mr. Lahey
from the Trailer Park Boys.
“It’s going to be exciting and fun,”
says Rich Weisz, one of the orga-
nizers. “We’re bringing Toronto to
Oshawa. Just to drive to Toronto
and to park is $30. Tickets here are
$30.”
The festival is the culmination of
a series of open mic nights orga-
nizers have been putting together
since January, he notes.
“We were going to do open mic
nights leading up to September,
then we organized a festival. We
did monthly events and a variety of
locations opened their doors to us,”
he says.
Last summer, he went with a
friend to a show in Toronto during
the Just for Laughs Comedy Fes-
tival, where he saw Brad Garrett,
known as Robert in the hit TV show
Everybody Loves Raymond.
“Because of that experience, I
wanted to bring that to Oshawa. I
put together a business plan. A lot
of people said don’t do it. I went
with my gut feeling and passion for
this,” Weisz states.
In November, his father George
passed away. For 30 years, George
Weisz served on the City of Osha-
wa’s committee of adjustment and
was a member of the harbour com-
mission.
During a ceremony to honour
George’s life, former Oshawa Coun-
cillor Joe Kolodzie suggested Weisz
go ahead with the comedy festival.
More support came from former
Oshawa Mayor John Gray.
The group began meeting in
December and the first open mic
night was held in January.
Some of the proceeds of the fes-
tival will be donated to the Make A
Wish Foundation.
“Our ideal goal is to raise $1 mil-
lion for Make A Wish in 10 years,”
Mr. Weisz says.
“There’s a reason we chose the
date,” Mr. Weisz says, noting the fes-
tival will run the same time as the
Toronto International Film Festi-
val. “Toronto draws a lot of famous
actors and actresses. We’d like to
draw them to Durham Region.”
Another organizer, Marko Ivan-
cicevic, says the hope is that as the
festival grows, people will “see it as
the same as Just for Laughs.”
In a lead-up to the festival, Come-
dy Showcase events are being held
on Aug. 20 and 24 at The Green
Bottle, at 145 King St. W. in Oshawa.
Each show starts at 8 p.m. and
celebrity judges will be on hand,
including Oshawa Mayor John
Henry, Councillor Bruce Wood and
Kerri King, the Region’s tourism
manager. Tickets are $5 each.
A confirmed entertainer is Debra
DiGiovanni of MuchMusic’s Video
on Trial program.
“She’s appealing to students and
that age demographic,” Mr. Weisz
says.
Sept. 14 is the “key kick-off day”
with Randy and Mr. Lahey per-
forming at the Green Bottle. Tick-
ets are $20 in advance and $25 at
the door. Following that, shows will
be held from Sept. 15 to 17 at the
Regent Theatre.

Early criticism didn’t stop Pickering’s
Judy Matthews from pursuing art career
How does one, at a very young
and impressionable age, handle
an art teacher’s recommenda-
tion that you “don’t do art”?
You get sweet revenge by
becoming a professional artist,
that’s how -- even if it’s more
than 40 years later.
Pickering painter Judy Mat-
thews did just that, after decades
of activities other than art mak-
ing.
Following primary and sec-
ondary education at a convent
school in her native Trinidad,
she trained as a secretary at her
father’s suggestion, but only
lasted nine short months work-
ing in an office. Then came an
11-year stint as a flight atten-
dant for British West Indies Air-
ways.
In 1985, she and her husband
John picked up and moved to
Canada, settling in a home in
north Pickering.
While he pursued his career
as a civil engineer, Judy con-
tented herself with being a stay-
at-home mom with son Roger,
helping out as a volunteer at his
school, finishing her high school
diploma and taking a course in
desktop publishing.
But, being good with her hands
-- she had always done needle-
point and sewing -- her creative
urges surfaced.
Beginning with pottery class-
es at the Pickering Recreation
Complex, then painting les-
sons with various local artists,
she launched herself into a pro-
fessional art career, painting
primarily oil-on-canvas land-
scapes from photos she takes
on her yearly visits to the Carib-
bean and from pictures she and
John shoot of Ontario and other
Canadian locales.
A look through Matthews’s
work over the last decade shows
steady and admirable progress
in colour mixing, use of light
and shadow and mastery of fine
detail.
“I try to paint beauty as if
the viewer is really there,” she
declares.
She participates on a regular
basis with a painting group at the
East Shore Community Centre
and will join one of the Andrew
Hamilton “plein air” workshops
this summer -- learning to paint
while sitting out in nature.
She has been a participant in
the last three Durham West Arts
Centre studio tours.
Connect with Matthews on
Facebook or contact her at

Club drops puck on
exhibition schedule
this weekend
Brad Kelly
bkelly@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- With training
camp underway and a couple
of exhibition games on tap for
the weekend, Pickering Pan-
thers head coach Mike Galati
says there are three spots up for
grabs.
But at the same time, there
might be 20 spots open depend-
ing on how the performance
from those still remaining plays
out in a home-and-home set
with St. Mike’s, beginning Fri-
day in Toronto and at the Ajax
Community Centre on Sunday at
11:30 a.m.
At first glance, Galati, in his
first season as head coach of the
Ontario Junior Hockey League
club, notes the team is looking
for a backup goalie, a defence-
man and a forward to help round
out the roster. But if anyone steps
up and impresses this weekend,
any one of the remaining spots
on the roster can be had.
“We want to improve,” he says
of evaluating the final 30 players
in camp, down from the 45 who
started Monday. “If somebody
shows better than what we have,
we’ll make that change. There
are a couple of spots available,
but really, there are 20 spots
available.”
And what will it take to earn a
roster spot? While he didn’t go
into any specifics, Galati knows
what he wants the composition
of his team to be once the puck
drops on the opening of the reg-
ular season on Sept. 9.
“We want to have a hard-work-
ing team,” he says. “We want to
be the hardest-working team in
the league. We’ve added some
talent up front with some size
and toughness.
“We want to make playing the
Pickering Panthers not a good
time for every team that comes
in.”
As for the games this weekend,
Galati will ice a young roster to
“give everyone an opportunity
to play and see what they can
bring,” he adds.
Following the weekend, the
staff will evaluate what trans-
pired, with another wave of cuts
expected Monday, reducing the
number of players to 25. A pair of
exhibition games are scheduled
against Aurora at home Wednes-
day, Aug. 24 and away on Friday,
Aug. 26.
Galati, 34, has previous head
coaching experience in the
league with the Hamilton Red
Wings and Upper Canada, while
piloting the GTHL Toronto Red
Wings ‘92 team that had 12 play-
ers drafted into the OHL. As a
player, he played junior with
Mississauga and Bramalea, as
well as in the OHL with Guelph
and Owen Sound. Profession-
ally, he had stops in the Britain,
Netherlands, England and Italy.

AJAX -- When considering his
post-secondary options, Pat
Gregoire had a list of criteria he
wanted his potential destination
to meet.
A checkmark was put beside
each of the three main consid-
erations when it came to Medai-
lle College in Buffalo, New York,
and the Mavericks field lacrosse
program.
“First, how close to home it
was,” says the 20-year-old Ajax
resident in rhyming off the three
things that topped his list. “The
second was I really enjoyed the
guys when I went to meet them.
They were great and the coach-
ing staff was fantastic as well.
“The third and most important
was the media communications
program that Medaille offered.”
The media program has a
solid reputation for the intern-
ship opportunities it can offer
its students, something that was
important, he added.
Gregoire spent the past school
year as a freshman at the North
East Athletic Conference Divi-
sion III school, a long pole
defender on a Mavericks team
that finished with a 5-10 record
overall. A starter at the begin-
ning of the season, he lost his
spot when the team went into
a losing streak, but earned his
starting status back by season’s
end.
He’s one of four players with
local connections on the team,
which includes Joe Kozovski
of Ajax, Cameron Ferguson of
Pickering, and Brock Levick, a
teammate on the Ajax Ironheads
Jr. B lacrosse team.
It was actually on the recom-
mendation of Kozovski to the
coaching staff at Medaille that
Gregoire was recruited. The
Notre Dame Catholic Second-
ary School graduate was playing
field lacrosse for Toronto Beach-
es U19 when Medaille head
coach Chaz Bulera watched him
play at the Turkey Shoot tourna-
ment in Rochester.
“I met with the coach. He liked
what he saw, we kept in touch,
and I went down for a couple
visits,” says Gregoire of how easy
it all was.
This summer he kept his skills
sharp playing for the Ironheads,
registering 1-4-5 point totals in
19 games while playing a defen-
sive role for the junior club. It
was his third season with the
team, and in looking back, he
has mixed emotions about how
everything unfolded.
There was a lot of positives
early on, but not so much in
terms of results in the end. After
jumping out to a 9-4-0 record,
the Ironheads lost their last
seven league games to finish
9-11-0, and were swept in three
straight in the opening round of
playoffs by Halton Hills.
“At one point it was disap-
pointing, but at the same time, it
was a success,” says Gregoire in
putting the summer season into
perspective. “The record we fin-
ished with wasn’t what we want-
ed. We felt we deserved a better
fate.”
The sting of losing 10 games
in a row to close out the regu-
lar season and playoffs has been
buried to serve as motivation for
next season.
“Next year, I couldn’t be more
excited. I know I’m not into my
field season yet, but I’m excit-
ed about next season,” he says
with anticipation. “We’ll have a
great team. We haven’t lost too
many guys and I know we have
some good, young guys com-
ing up from Ajax, Pickering and
Markham. The coaching staff
did a fantastic job.
“I really think we are going to
be taken seriously. I feel like we
have a lot of unfinished business.
I think we can really accomplish
some big things next year.”

AJAX -- The Ajax Impact under-12 boys’
rep soccer team were poor hosts at their
recent tournament.
The Impact gave up just one goal in four
games to win their own Ajax FC Tourna-
ment.
In the finals, Impact faced Guelph A for a
second time and came away with a 3-0 vic-
tory. Guelph A sits atop their own league
without a loss in seven games. Dalton
Clark recorded the shutout, while Jordan
Smalling potted all three goals and picked
up game MVP honours.
The Impact opened up round robin play
by slipping past the Ajax Fury 2-0, with
Darryn Commissiong and Keishawn Del-
evante scoring and Clark recording the
shutout.
The Impact boys stepped up their form
in the following games, defeating Guelph
A 4-0 and Aurora A 7-1. Against Guelph,
Jordan Smalling smashed home two goals,
while Cedric Ralph and Commissiong
notched one apiece. Commissiong kept
rolling against Aurora A and recorded four
goals in the first half before resting for the
final game. Nick Sims, Austin Werner and
Ralph all scored one goal each to round
out the game.
Ajax Impact is currently ranked the num-
ber-one team in Ontario for under-12 boys
in the Terra Rankings. They also are the
only undefeated team in the U12 CSL Level
3 and sit in first place with more than half
the season completed.
Players are Dalton Clark, Adrian Mar-
tini, Nick Sims, Claude Griffith, Maarten
Schyvenaars, Austin Werner, Dylan Cachia-
Stel, Chris Wilson, Jordan Hardie, Dar-
ryn Commissiong, Jean-Paul Ajala-Alex-
is, Nathaniel Sadler, Keishawn Delevante,
Shanthosh Pushparajah, Jordan Smalling,
Cedric Ralph and Ethan Harrison.
The head coach is Scott Hardie, assisted
by Mike Croft and Robert Stel. Karen Wer-
ner is the manager.
