PICKERING -- It wasn’t until Mark Vander-
Bruggen saw a girl holding a thank you sign on
Remembrance Day that it hit him -- he’s done
something worth recognition.
At age 26, Mr. VanderBruggen was among
a small group of young men recognized in
Pickering Saturday as the Legion’s newest vet-
erans -- those who served in Afghanistan. The
Pickering Legion held a service Aug. 13 to thank
and welcome the young veterans home.

The event, at Legion branch 606 at 1555
Bayly St., included speeches, the plac-
ing of crosses, releasing of doves, singing
and playing of the pipes.
“I know what you’ve been through --
both you and your family -- has not been
easy,” said Gord Moore, first vice-pres-
ident of the Legion’s Dominion Com-
mand.
It’s been almost 10 years since we start-
ed going to Afghanistan, he added.
He thanked the veterans for their ser-
vice, commitment, and fortitude.
“We all know and are grateful of the
contribution they made to improve the
lives of others,” said Sharon McKeown,
vice-president of the Legion’s provincial
command.
Other speakers also conveyed their
message of thanks, including Tamin
Sadiquin, founding member and past
president of the Canadian Afghan Coun-
cil.
“Afghan people were deprived from
their basic rights: go to school, listen to
music, or even go on the Internet,” Mr.
Sadiquin said.
He thanked the new veterans for help-
ing to liberate the country.
Now that the soldiers are home, we
have to respect them and treat them as
veterans and not make the same mistake
of exclusion that was made with those
who served in Korea, said Myrna Picotte,
the Pickering Legion branch 606’s past
president and special events chairwom-
an.
“It feels good to be thanked for a job
done,” Mr. VanderBruggen said.
The Whitby native, who currently lives
in Bowmanville, spent eight months in
Afghanistan.
“It’s nice to be recognized,” he added.
“It’s a good feeling to know they appre-
ciate what we did,” said Kyle Harding, 21,
of Pickering.
He spent seven months in Afghani-
stan.
Mr. VanderBruggen added that you
never really think of people saying
thank you until it happens, like it did
with the little girl who stepped out hold-
ing a thank you sign during the Oshawa
Remembrance Day parade.
For longtime veteran and Pickering
resident Eric Lightowler ,the service
brought back memories.
“It’s nice to see them,” he said while sit-
ting at a table in the legion hall, medals
pinned across the chest of his uniform.
Mr. Lightowler is a past sergeant of arms
and parade marshal who served in Ger-
many, Italy, and Austria in the Second
World War, and in Greece during its civil
war, he said.
“It takes my memory back to the time
when I was 18 years of age and was a
young soldier,” Mr. Lightowler said.
“I think it’s very important (to recog-
nize the young veterans) as our motto is
lest we forget,” he added.
“We are very lucky in Canada to be in
a part of the world that is free,” he con-
tinued. “And God bless those who have
served.”

PICKERING -- Old pots and pans can now
be turned into ammunition in the battle
against kids’ cancers with a fundraising scrap
metal drive in Pickering.
Ajax resident Bob Turner is hosting the
scrap metal drive in partnership with Scrap
Cares, a recycling company based in Burl-
ington, to raise funds for the upcoming Sears
National Kids Cancer Ride, which the 57 year
old will be participating in.
“The ride gives me a unique opportunity to
help children and their families fight this dis-
ease,” Mr. Turner said, noting he was inspired
by the experiences of his young nephew and
a young neighbour, who recently battled can-
cer.
“I’ve witnessed the disease’s effect on my
family and friends, and I’m drawing my
inspiration from them. Thanks to generous
donations to causes like this, my nephew is
now cancer-free. I am thrilled that 100 per
cent of all funds raised will go directly to the
cause.”
The ride raises funds for the Coast to Coast
Against Cancer Foundation, which focuses
on improving the quality of life of children
living with cancer.
Mr. Turner has been getting up daily at 6
a.m. and cycling anywhere from 80 to 100
kilometres a day in training for the ride, which
kicks off in Vancouver on Wednesday, Sept. 7
and concludes in Halifax on Thursday, Sept.
22. His goal is to raise $25,000 for the cause
through his participation in the race.
In order to meet that goal Mr. Turner will
be hosting a scrap metal drive on Saturday,
Aug. 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking
lot of the Pickering Town Centre, in conjunc-
tion with Scrap Cares. Residents are invited
to drop off any scrap metal they may want to
get rid of in aid of a good cause.
“Every little bit of scrap metal and e-waste
can be turned into cash for this great cause,”
said Terry Griffiths, education and institu-
tional co-ordinator for Scrap Cares.
“Pots, pans, refrigerators, stoves, micro-
waves, barbecues, computers and peripher-
als will all go a long way to help Bob reach his
goal of raising $25,000 before he leaves for
Vancouver. If everyone brings just one piece
of scrap metal lying around their garages and
basements, Bob will easily reach his goal.”

DURHAM -- Police have arrested three people
and seized guns, drugs and cash after searching a
Pickering home.
On Aug. 10 police executed a search warrant after a
man was arrested while leaving his home and found
to be in possession of 162 grams of marijuana.
Two other residents were arrested outside the
home after police found numerous marijuana plants
growing in plain view on the large rural property.
A subsequent search yielded a stolen handgun, a
.22 calibre rifle, a harpoon gun and a crossbow.
Police also found several additional pounds of
marijuana, bags of opium plants, various types of
ammunition and about $15,000 in cash.
Keith Pierson, 18, Nancy Ruppert, 50, and Alan
Pierson, 62, of Pine Heights Trail are facing numer-
ous charges including production of a controlled
substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking
and possession of the proceeds of crime.
All three were held for a bail hearing.

DURHAM -- A joint investigation between Dur-
ham Regional Police and the OPP has resulted in
charges of identity theft and fraud.
Three Brampton residents are facing charges
in connection with an incident that happened in
Pickering earlier this summer.
Police say two women went to a Sears store in July
and bought large amounts of gift cards using credit
cards. Store employees were suspicious and called
police, who discovered the real credit card hold-
ers live in British Columbia and have never been to
Ontario.
Further investigation revealed the two suspects
had multiple Ontario driver’s licences under fake
names and were connected to a Brampton home
that had been purchased under a fake name.
Gbemisloa Akinrinade, 32, Victoria Fafowora, 34,
and Olushola Kehinde, 39 are facing charges.

golf balls
The price of such
picturesque landscapes?
To the editor:
Re: Flying golf balls.
The key point made in the article stated
that the real estate agent noted that balls
“occasionally” enter the property. That is a
subjective statement.
You accepted this before purchasing your
house and it rings true today. Did you ever
ask for the real numbers that would indi-
cate ball intrusion frequencies? It’s safe to
say that from December through March,
that rate is zero. While par on the average
18-hole golf course is 72, less than 20 per
cent of all recreational golfers regularly
break 100.
Those 28+ extra strokes per round are
gained by errant shots. Every golfer on
every shot wants to hit either the fairway
or green, yet even the best players in the
world hit spectators, find trees and splash
down.
It’s a reality.
You deliberately paid a premium to live
alongside some of the most picturesque
properties known to man.
If, after making the commitment to live
there, circumstances aren’t to your liking,
it is your concern; not that of society.
To all families who live by a golf course;
I sympathize with your fears but you have
eagerly positioned yourselves in harm’s
way.

To the editor:
Re: Flying golf balls.
I am tired of hearing complaints from
homeowners on properties that abut golf
courses, parks, schoolyards, ball diamonds,
soccer fields, etc.
Homeowners seem surprised that they
have golf balls bouncing off of their house,
noise on a Saturday morning, parking
problems, lights in the evening in their
windows. Just what did they expect?
It’s not like the golf course, ball diamond,
or soccer pitch was built behind existing
homes.
The field of play is usually there first and
the homes were built around them or were
included in the original plans of the subdi-
vision.
Residents know these venues are there
and handpicked the property, paid extra
for it in some cases. Don’t blame the venue
for the issues you are having; you chose to
live next to it.
Here’s a suggestion: move. Go to the local
store and stock up on empty boxes and
start packing your stuff and move some-
where safer.
That way you, your kids and grand-
kids won’t have to wear bicycle helmets,
deal with the noise or lights or any other
issues that arise from living next to a sports
venue.
Maybe I will move next to the airport and
then complain about the noise and have
them stop the planes.
By the way, can I have my Pro V1 balls
back?

To the editor:
Re: ‘Motorcycles and vehicles make for
sad news in Durham’, editorial opinion,
durhamregion.com, Aug. 10, 2011.
In a nutshell, motorcycles are danger-
ous. They are even more dangerous when
driven carelessly.
I’m sure anyone who has driven in a car
has seen the way some motorcycles weave
in and out of traffic, or the way they speed
on open roads.
I refuse to drive motorcycles, simply
because I have gotten into accidents in the
cars I’ve owned, and if I had gotten in the
same accident on a bike I may not be here.
I have even sky-dived, since there are few
accidents sky-diving, but there have been
eight accidents with bikes in a little over a
month in Durham.
Having sky-dived, I can understand the
attraction to riding motorcycles.
If you do ride a motorcycle, be vigilant,
don’t speed, don’t tailgate and take care.

& Honouring the legacy of Terry and Betty Fox in Durham
Preparations are underway in com-
munities across Durham Region this
month in anticipation of the annu-
al Terry Fox Run in September.
And this year’s events should hold spe-
cial meaning and inspiration for all of us:
Betty Fox, Terry’s mother, his most ener-
getic champion and fiercest protector who
became the voice and face of the annual
international fundraising event, died in
June after a brief illness.
Local events organized in communities
across Durham are still a month away,
but at least one organizing committee, in
Whitby, is raising awareness early, recruit-
ing volunteers and actively working to
ensure this year’s event is a smashing suc-
cess.
Other communities in Durham are
encouraged to work diligently once again,
with renewed focus and energy, to honour
the legacy not only of Terry Fox, but his
mother, a tireless advocate whose journey
never faltered as she presided over the
international growth of the Terry Fox Run
for nearly 30 years.
Every penny raised in the community
counts and helps others. Considering that
the Terry Fox Run has raised nearly a half-
billion dollars in runs across the globe, it’s
vitally important that communities here
at home do their part to raise awareness
and research funds.
As community run organizing commit-
tees are busy preparing for their events,
schools across Durham Region are also
encouraged to continue or, if necessary,
resurrect a fundraising run this year to
honour the legacy the late Mrs. Fox built
in memory of her son, and reinforce the
support that exists far and wide across
Canada.
Terry Fox is a unique Canadian hero
who embodied all of the characteristics
Canadians hope are reflected in them-
selves. He confronted his cancer diagno-
sis with bravery and action and in the pro-
cess, inspired first a nation and then oth-
ers around the globe through his courage
and commitment.
His untimely death in the midst of his
Marathon of Hope spurred us to take
action, to emulate his selflessness, to con-
tribute to something meaningful.
His mother personified those character-
istics long after his death, right up until
she too succumbed to her illness.
Let us all do our part this year and every
year to keep the tradition alive, to honour
the memory of Terry and Betty Fox, and
continue the decades-long quest to find a
cure for cancer. It’s been a long run for the
Fox family. The Marathon of Hope contin-
ues.

Family and friends
gather in Pickering
in support of
Allesio Caccavella
MoyA Dillon
mdillon@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Residents of Pickering’s
Southcott Road subdivision may have been
surprised to hear Taio Cruz’s club hit Dyna-
mite being sung by a chorus of voices both
young and old outside their homes.
More than 150 people gathered around the
home of 11-year-old Allesio Caccavella on
Aug. 11 to support him in his battle against
brain stem cancer with a group sing-along of
his favourite songs. The event, which coin-
cided with Allesio’s birthday, kicked off at
8:11 p.m. and lasted 11 minutes -- one min-
ute to mark each year of Allesio’s life.
“I think my children don’t understand the
magnitude of people surrounding them who
are supporting them and praying for them,”
said Anna Caccavella, Allesio’s mother, who
originally floated the idea of a vigil or cele-
bratory event to a group of her neighbours a
few months ago.
“This event has gone way beyond what I
imagined. It’s very humbling to know people
will come together for this cause. For Allesio
it shows him we are here, we’re fighting with
you and we will be here every step of the way.
I want him to see that he’s so loved.”
Allesio’s battle against cancer began at
the age of 14 months, when he was diag-
nosed with ependimoma, a cancerous brain
tumour six centimetres in diameter. After
surgery, chemo and radiation, Allesio beat
the odds and survived the ordeal, going on to
enjoy eight cancer-free years. But at the age
of 10, Ms. Caccavella got a bad feeling after
Allesio woke up vomiting on two separate
days. After several doctor visits and numer-
ous tests, the family received the bad news
that the cancer was back.
“It’s so hard not to be able
to understand your child; as
a parent you’re supposed to
know what he needs and
give him that,” Ms. Cacca-
vella said of Allesio, who
has lost the use of his left
leg, much of his speech and
is now losing the ability to
swallow.
“It could be something as
simple as a request for water and you can’t
understand it, or you can’t give him that
because he might choke.”
Andreo Caccavella, Allesio’s dad, said that
he has noticed Allesio becoming more with-
drawn in recent weeks, and hoped the show
of support would remind him how impor-
tant he is to so many.
“Allesio is becoming depressed because
he wants to be normal, he wants to be able
to run around and play like his brothers
and sisters, like a normal kid. It’s almost like
he blames himself, but we keep telling him
this isn’t your fault. He’s constantly told that
he’s not alone and people are always think-
ing about him. Tonight he’s going to see that
everyone he knows is there for him, every-
one loves him.”
Allesio, who was brought outside in a
wheelchair shortly after 8 p.m., was greet-
ed by a loud cheer from the crowd that had
assembled outside his house, gathered in a
semi-circle around a group of lit candles that
spelled out Allesio’s name above a heart on
the driveway.
“It was scary at first because it makes it
seem so final in that vigils are usually associ-
ated with final days,” said Emanuela Lazzaro,
who helped to organize the event along with
fellow neighbours and friends Sharren Phil-
lips and Helen Mintsopoulos.
“But the fact that we were going to turn it
into something positive is what I liked about
the idea. This is to encourage Allesio, to sup-
port him and tell him we love him.”
Ms. Lazzaro’s son Gianpaolo, 11, attends
St. Wilfred Catholic School with Allesio and
describes him as a “best friend.
“I think this is a good way to get everyone
here to see what he’s going through and also
to show Allesio we are on his side. It was really
shocking when he got sick, we would always
go to each other’s houses and play Nintendo
D.S. and stuff, he’s a really good friend.”
Visibly weakened, Allesio drifted in and
out of sleep as family and friends gathered at
a microphone to kick things off with a prayer
for the family, followed by a sing-along to
Waving Flag by Canadian artist K’naan.
Afterwards, Allesio showed his approval with
a weak thumbs-up. The move seemed to
rally the crowd, who gave their all for a rous-
ing rendition of the popular anthem Dyna-
mite. The performance even elicited some
toe-tapping from Allesio, who counts the
song among his favourites.
“I remember seeing him during a picnic
at daycare and this song came on and I’ve
never seen anyone sing like that,” Ms. Phil-
lips said of her choice to include the song in
the event’s program.
“I always remember that, and I wanted to
honour that tonight and remind him of that
feeling. He was singing the most out of every-
one and tonight is a celebration, so I wanted
to sing that song.”
The third and final song in the celebration
was the popular standard Lean on Me by Bill
Withers, which was dedicated to the family
from all the neighbours and friends present.
“We love you guys and we will always be
with you,” Ms. Lazzaro said to the family.
“We want you to be strong and we want
you to know you are always in our hearts.
And like the song says, ‘call us’, we are here
for you.”
Ms. Caccavella, visibly emotional, leaned
in to her son to sing him the lyrics.
“Lean on me, when you’re not strong, and
I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on. For,
it won’t be long, ‘til I’m gonna need, some-
body to lean on.”

Caleb Wurzer
called a hero
by friends and family
Jillian Follert
jfollert@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Caleb Wurzer is proof
that you’re never too young to help a
friend in need.
Last week the six-year-old Pickering
boy and his best friend Aiden, also six,
were swimming in a backyard pool,
under the watchful eyes of their parents.
Aiden -- who doesn’t know how to
swim -- had been wearing a life jacket
most of the day, but was allowed to take
it off briefly to try out some swimming
techniques.
What happened next is the kind of cau-
tionary tale about which parents warn
each other.
The adults turned their backs for
“about 10 seconds” as far as Caleb’s dad
Chuck Wurzer remembers.
In that short time Aiden managed to
slip into the deep end of the pool where
he started swallowing water and went
under.
The adults missed what was hap-
pening, but Caleb saw and sprang into
action, swimming over to his friend and
pulling him to the shallow end.
“I saw him go past the white line into
the deep end so I thought it was helpful to
take him to the shallow end,” Caleb says.
Aiden coughed up some water but was
otherwise OK.
“He saved his life,” Mr. Wurzer says,
beaming with pride.
He says his son was a bit shaken by
the experience, because he thought his
buddy was trying to pull him under the
water, when in fact Aiden was clinging to
him in panic.
A few days later, Caleb -- who will be
starting Grade 1 at Sir John A. Macdon-
ald Public School this fall -- is enjoy-
ing the attention from friends and fam-
ily as the story of his heroics makes the
rounds.
“I’m so proud of my son,” Mr. Wurzer
says. “I’m amazed, I never thought he
would have the foresight to even think
something like that, let alone do it.”

Indo-Canadian Cultural
Association of Durham
hosts cultural celebration
MoyA DIllon
mdillon@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Residents can get a taste of
India in Pickering at the Indo-Canadian
Cultural Association of Durham’s Festival
of India’s Heritage.
This is the sixth annual festival to cel-
ebrate Indian culture and Indo-Canadian
residents’ ties to the country while simul-
taneously marking India’s independence
day.
“We’d like to encourage everyone to
show their pride and be a part of this
very important event,” said Shashi Bhatia,
chairwoman of the association.
“We want to celebrate together for better
understanding and bring the community
together in a spirit of brotherhood.”
The event will kick off at noon on Satur-
day, Aug. 20 with a flag raising in Espla-
nade Park behind City Hall. Following
the ceremony, participants will march to
the Pickering Recreation Complex for a
performance featuring Bollywood danc-
ing, sitar performances and music from
Ramzat Indian Music Group. The event
will also feature vendors selling traditional
food plus clothes, jewelry and crafts.
“We wanted to represent the Indian
diaspora of Durham,” Ms. Bhatia said of
the event.
“We all share a love for our roots and a
deep respect for our adopted country. With
this celebration we recognize the impor-
tant connection between our two coun-
tries. It celebrates our differences, but we
celebrate them together, and I think that
shows the whole community can come
together as one.”
The popular festival has drawn so much
attention from Indo-Canadian residents
that a film crew from Mumbai will be
attending to record the festivities for an
upcoming documentary on the integra-
tion of immigrants into Canadian society.
“We’re very proud of the fact we’re get-
ting these overseas visitors,” Ms. Bhatia
said. “I think people will see that our cul-
tural program is really world-class.”
The free event will run from noon to 5
p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Pickering
Recreation Complex.

…and YOU are invited to visit their new
state of the art facility, try a free class,
meet the faculty, and discover why so
many families have chosen DANCE INC.
to call home.
Five years ago a new dance studio hit
Durham, and since then, DANCE INC’s Owners/
Directors Bre and Je Wong, have created
a buzz throughout the dance industry! The
enthusiastic young couple have brought
groundbreaking dance training programs to
Durham, inspiring dancers whether novice or
advanced, boys or girls, young or old to love
dance! As a result of their unique approach,
contagious enthusiasm and unparalleled
competitive success; the dynamic team found
it necessary to move to a new location, which
could provide the space and amenities to
meet the demands of their growing family of
dancers!
The culmination of their hard work and
ever increasing popularity is DANCE INC’s
new studio: 530 Westney Rd South, Unit 12,
conveniently located just south of the 401
and Bayly Rd in Ajax. The new home boasts
over 8,000 sq. Ft, four spacious sprung oor
studios, a homework and lunch room for busy
dancers and Dance-Cam views of all studios
from the spacious
lobby. The innovation
doesn`t stop there,
as Bre and Je bring
additional programs
to their studio which
the couple hope will
assist them to share
their love of dance
with an even wider
audience. In addition
to their resoundingly
successful recreational
dance programs and
an already at full
capacity competitive program, DANCE INC. will
o er even more this year! On the top of the list;
“B.A.D. Boys of DANCE INC.” (BOYS ATHLETIC
DANCE PROGRAM) necessitated by their
expanding male dance following of more than
30 young male dancers, “TUTU CUTE” toddler
ballet program, “MINI MOVERS” an introduction
to jazz and tap for 5 & 6 yr olds and
“FUNKY MONKEYS” a toddlers intro
to hip hop. Adult programs are also
scheduled to include jazz, Zumba
and hip hop, along side “MINI ME”
& “BABY BOUNCE” 2 programs for
moms/dads and their tots under
2yrs. DANCE INC. will also continue
to provide their students with access to the
best dance professionals of the world through
ongoing in-house workshops. DANCE INC’s
guest faculty includes
Sonya Tayeh, Missy
Ridgeway, Kim
McSwain, Allsion
Holker and Mark
Kenamora to name
a few, who provide
ongoing workshops
and choreography to
the studio ensuring
DANCE INC. is on
the cutting edge of
dance, creativity and
innovation.
If you ask Bre and Je to look at DANCE INC’s
rst 5 years and share some of their proudest
moments, both agree that watching their
studio evolve and produce ever increasing
numbers of happy, con dent, and talented
dancers; their positive word of mouth in the
community; and countless referrals from happy
customers top their list. Also seeing grads
succeed in their professional dance lives and
return to the studio to just feel like home, make
this duo certain that they are doing it right!
As they look to the future, DANCE INC’s goal
remains to inspire one child at a time while
providing not just dance lessons but also life
lessons. If DANCE INC. can help children to gain
con dence, poise, and athleticism through
dance, then their ultimate goal will be realized.
From the look of this expanding facility and
the growing league of faithful followers and
talented dancers…there`s no place like home
at the new DANCE INC.
For full descriptions of all programs visit
www.dance@danceinc.ca, contact them via
email at dance@danceinc.ca, call them at 905-

buzz is about and see why YOU TOO should

As the school season starts back
up, some parents will be looking for
daycare or activities their child can
participate in. Most children like to
take part in sporting activities, such
as hockey or baseball. Although,
it is great to have your child gain
some physical activity in their life,
wouldn’t it be even more productive
to also get a mental workout too? A
great way for your child to become
more mentally and physically
active would be to enrol them in
Taekwondo classes.
Taekwondo teaches the students many
di erent mental attributes; these attributes
include introspective re ection, self-
discipline, self-control, and a stress free
mind. Some of the physical traits your child
will develop are speed, balance, agility and
strength.
The facility itself o ers an aesthetically
pleasing and safe environment. Parents are
encouraged to watch classes in the spacious
glass viewing area without interrupting
students. Durham Taekwondo/Karate
Martial Arts Inc. guarantees a safe, fun and
exciting environment while their students
develop the self con dence they need
to succeed. Many parents say after their
child has been taking classes with Durham
Taekwondo that the child has increased
their self con dence, motivation and desire
to excel.
Durham Taekwondo is a member of the
Ontario Taekwondo Association. Their
classes di er from other Taekwondo classes
as they are taught by renowned instructors
who are internationally recognized for their
contributions to the sport of Taekwondo.
Instructor So a Hovnanian is a Third Degree
Black Belt and has received the highest
recognition from the World Taekwondo
Federation for promoting education in the
sport. All programming is overseen by 8th
Dan Black Belt, Grand Master Felix Ayensu.
There is a transported after school program
o ered for children aged 4 -12 years old at
Durham Taekwondo. Your child is picked
up at their school and taken to Durham
Taekwondo for one low price, making it easy
to eliminate babysitting costs. The program
has been created to enhance the overall
development of your child, and to provide
a productive alternative to babysitting at a
lesser cost. This is accomplished through
the combination of certi ed
teachers and martial artists.
The after school program
provides assistance with
schoolwork and is structured
so that the students develop
the habit of completing
homework daily as well
as participating in regular
exercise through their martial
arts curriculum. Students
receive additional training
using Dr. Webster Doyle’s
Bully Proof System on how to
handle the schoolyard bully.
The After School Transported
Martial Arts Program is very
exible when it comes to the
convenience of picking up
your child. You can pick them
up after work any time between 5:15 and
6:15 pm.
Regular classes are o ered for anyone
over the age of 4. The curriculum is
designed to cater speci cally to age groups:
Little Dragons, four to six years old, Kids
Club, 7-12 years old, Teens & Adults, and
Competitive teams. For people interested
in taking any class or program, Durham
Taekwondo encourages them to rst take a
free introductory class before signing up.
Durham Taekwondo is a fantastic way to
strengthen your child’s body, mind and spirit
by helping them to create healthy habits
that they will carry on in life. Conveniently
located to serve both Ajax and Pickering
at 1550 Bayly St., Unit 32, in Pickering,
Durham Taekwondo/ Karate Martial Arts
inc. will give your child the drive they need
to become successful in life. For more

I’ve been dancing at Taylor for 7 years and I’ve
learned so much. Not only about dance and
techniques, but a lot about myself. They really
helped me to understand my strengths and
weak-nesses and how I can improve. This is not
just a dance lesson but a
lesson for life.Taylor Dance
Centre is one of my homes.
When I’m there I feel like
I can express so much and
just let go of all my burdens.
I’ve had so many great
times and fun experiences...
from Dis-ney, New York to
Paris this August. They have
allowed me to have so many
great opportunities. I LOVE
TDC!!! When-ever I’m there I
can’t help but SMILE :)

Yo u’ll flip over us
Almost from birth, human beings
show joy and happiness with
movement. Picture a baby waving
their arms in the air and giggling, or
a toddler wiggling and bouncing to
music. We dance when we are happy
and we are happy when we are
dancing. As soon as dance becomes
about “winning” – everyone loses.
Being a dancer on a competitive
team can be a wonderful and
rewarding experience. Competitive
dancers are con dent, organized,
energetic people, but as with most
things – the process is the important
part. Friendships made, lessons
learned, bonds created between
teacher and student, having a role
model, being a role model, these are
the true winning moments— this is
the de nition of success!
The TDE competitive team had a fabulous
2011 season, winning many overall high
scores, scholarships, and choreography
awards, but the thing that stands out most
was when their senior dancers actually
cried watching the young novice group
perform at their rst competition ever.
The beauty of that moment outshines any
trophy. The “big girls” look back on their
years of dance with incredible fondness.
The Dance Experience has helped to
shape them into the wonderful people
they are today and they cherish their early
memories of Dance.
Many students begin as young as three
or four years old, with our Creative Dance
classes. This is a 45-minute class taught
by studio owner Terri Robitaille, who has
specialized in pre-school dance for almost
25 years. Dance Beginners, also taught
by “Teacher Terri” is a fast moving hour-
long combination class for ve year olds.
By the age of six, dancers may take classes
in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Musical
Theatre, and Acro. Some students choose
the competitive stream – which involves
more hours and dedication, others stay at
a recreational level. No matter the stream,
ALL of our teachers are experienced and
fully quali ed experts in their elds – and
they all love teaching dance to children!
FUN is an important ingredient in all of
our classes.
Their recital in June features every
dancer at the studio shining on stage.
Their moves, music and costuming are
always age-appropriate and reasonably
priced. Families benefit from multi-class
discounts, and the studio itself features
top-quality flooring and equipment.
Please visit www.danceexperience.
ca for more information about classes,
prices, scheduling, and registration. You
can also call Terri at 905-686-8335 with
any questions or drop by the studio for
a tour. They look forward to providing
you with a Happy Dance Experience…

Students and faculty are pleased to
announce the start of another thrilling
year of dance at the Denise Lester
Dance Academy (DLDA). Register now
to be part of this exciting dance studio,
an awesome place for your child or
yourself to be part of. The studio o ers
quality classes in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Acro,
Hip Hop, Contemporary, Pre-ballet,
Combination classes, Musical Theatre
and new this year Lyrical for nine years
old and up. For the Adults – Tap and Hip
Hop. A dance studio is only as good as
its teachers and the DLDA has some of
the most creative and capable teachers
in the business. All classes are taught
by experienced, fully quali ed teachers
who believe that every student in class
is important.
DLDA DLDA kicked o the new season with
an exciting “Dance Intensive” o ering the
students new and exciting dance forms - Silks,
Afro Cuban, Latina Jazz, Bollywood as well
as traditional dance forms. DLDA’s Summer
Dance Intensive runs every summer where
you can have the opportunity to work with
top choreographers and learn cutting-edge
choreography.
Classes starting in September are suitable
for the recreational dancer or the serious
competitive dancer, age three through to adult,
beginner to advanced. There is no registration
fee to sign up and you pay only for your
rst eight weeks of classes. The season runs
through to June and ends with two, completely
di erent, spectacular recitals. Both recitals are
conducted with the utmost of organization by
the faculty so the parents can sit, watch and
enjoy the most wonderful dance recital to be
seen. You will be thrilled watching your child
perform the work that they have worked so
hard to learn. DLDA has not lost sight of today’s
economy or the added expense of the HST by
keeping recital costumes to a reasonable price
and the price of classes have, for the fth year,
not increased.
The competitive team boasts of wonderfully
successful competitive seasons year after year.
The past season was no exception with our
dancers returning home with many overall
awards of excellence and the highest mark of
the competition being won by Megan Wood
and the senior troupe, the choreographers
award was won by the DLDA teachers 6 times.
The competitive team proudly supported the
community by performing for Art Fest and two
senior citizen homes during the year. Many
of our competitive
dancers have gone
onto very successful
careers in dance, like
Jenna-Lyn Higgins
who was chosen
to dance on the
popular TV series “So
You Think You Can
Dance” as well as Sara
Wood and Christina
Matos who are
enjoying their summer dancing at “Canada’s
Wonderland”. The studio is always looking for
talented, ambitious dancers to join the team
and be part of the new exciting year — which
is about to start. This year DLDA is expanding
their Pre-Competitive Team. Perfect for those
dancers who would like to compete but with
slightly less of a commitment than what is
needed for the mainstream competitive team.
DLDA o ers exams in Ballet, Jazz, Tap and
Acro. Serious students can graduate from the
studio with a teacher’s quali cation in all four
branches – a prerequisite for teaching at city
dance programs, at other dance studios or to
open studios of their own (which many DLDA
alumni have done). It is also a quali cation
highly recognized on University entrance
applications.
You can visit the web site at www.
deniselesterdance.com to read about the
alumni who are performing anywhere from
Broadway to Stratford, on “So You Think You
Can Dance” and on cruise ships, teaching for
the world famous Rockettes. Our own Suzie
Cunli e-Brown choreographs for movies and
Wonderland. Don’t miss her dance show at
Wonderland this summer and “Halloween
Haunt” in the fall.
Whether dancing for you is just once a week
for fun or something that you would like to
take seriously, you and your child can have the
opportunity to be taught by this wonderfully
successful faculty of teachers who accomplish
so much with their students.
Call Denise at 905-839-3041, come to the
booth at Pickering Town Center August 25th

Every Wednesday evening
throughout the summer Jacqueline’s
School of Dance (JSOD) is open for
registration and drop-in dance classes.
Two young girls aged 8 and 10 came
in to try the Junior Acro class. The girls
were nervous to walk into the studio
never-mind participate. As excited and
anxious as they were to nally take a
dance class, it was di cult for them
to leave their mom’s side. Jacqueline
introduced the girls and asked the
class: “Do the girls need to worry?”
There was resounding, “No”. Then,
she asked, “Will you make them feel
welcome?” And of course an even
louder “Yes” was bellowed and one
little voice added: “Because we are
a family.” As Jacqueline knelt on the
oor with the new girls she couldn’t
help but feel proud of the JSOD family.
I was secretly con dent my two new
friends would run out to mom after
class and express delight at their new-
found passion and family.
The school accomplishes many goals each year
from top choreography, overall trophies and
scholarships, title-winning soloists, 100 per cent
passing rate in examinations, Readers’ Choice
Awards and is proud to produce four beautiful
and completely di erent Spring Showcases. “Our
mantra and most important accomplishment
is reaching each student and meeting their
individual needs,” says founder Jacqueline Wills.
Dance, like most activities promotes
teamwork, builds self esteem, encourages a
strong work ethic and keeps the mind and
body t. “We teach these life skills along with
pliés, jetés and pirouettes.” Dance also gives the
participant the opportunity to express without
words. “How each dancer gets to a place
where they just “let go” is individual. Some
walk through our doors with this ability, some
nd it easy to pick up technique and others
work at it. Just as in math class students learn
di erently. A good teacher recognizes this and
plans her lessons around those needs.” In some
countries, children at an early age are selected
to train in activities like ballet, gure skating,
hockey, piano, gymnastics based upon their
natural physical make up. This allows the coach
to push harder as the bodies are basically built
for that particular sport or activity. In Canada,
these activities are chosen by the child. “We
accept participants without prejudice, and
today’s dancer comes in di erent sizes and
shapes. Our students represent every body
shape and size, however, the one thing they all
have in common is the passion for the art and
the desire to learn. For the instructor this means
individualizing the program for each child. This
not only prevents injuries, it also promotes the
highest development for the individual.”
JSOD is an accredited studio with instructors
quali ed under the BATD, York University,
Ryerson University and the Randolph Academy
of the Performing Arts. Additionally,
Jacqueline has trained with and is one of the
rst certi ed in the Paula Morgan Technique,
www.paulamorgandance.com. “Our goal
with PMT and at JSOD is to build a strong
dancer safely and providing them with an
environment to feel they can “let go” and live
in the moment.
“One of our six year olds told mom on the
way home in June, “Dancing keeps me alive...it
makes me feel happy!” “At the end of our Acro
class my two little friends did run out to mom
and say, “I loved it”. I do want to join.” One fun
class, a little encouragement and a hug at the
end and we have two new members in our
JSOD family. More are welcome.”

As a young child Tammy Roberts
dreamed of owning and operating
her own dance studio. With years of
dancing herself, training with the best
in the industry and nally graduating
from the Fine Arts program at Ryerson
University, that dream became a reality
some 20 years ago.
When she purchased Durham Dance Centre, it
was a tiny studio with a small student base. She
says: “I decided then that my challenge was to
grow the business year by year by o ering an
environment where children would come to
learn and grow with me in the art of dance. I am
very proud to say that Durham Dance Centre has
enjoyed steady growth over the years and our
return rate has been a rewarding experience for
me and my teaching sta .
Students at Durham Dance Centre achieve
outstanding results in R.A.D. ballet exams, are
accepted at the National Ballet of Canada,
accepted at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and at
the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive
Training Program. Durham Dance Centre
students have overall titles in Canada and the
United States. Roberts says: “I have been very
fortunate to win choreography awards with
Durham Dance Centre students performing
at prestigious competitions throughout North
America. This past spring I was very proud of my
students who auditioned for the Canadian Tap
Team that will travel to Germany this November to
compete in the World Championships.” Students
from Durham Dance Centre
have danced professionally all
over the world on various cruise
ships, at Disney in Tokyo, in music
videos, the Argos, the Raptors,
in Broadway shows, and also
performed with musicians.
When she looks back over
the number of years she has
owned Durham Dance Centre
she is extremely proud of our
accomplishments. “One thing
that I am particularly proud
of and stands out in my
mind was the opportunity
to teach a physically challenged young
lady who never thought she would be able
to dance.”
Students have been given an
opportunity to learn and grow from the
best in the industry by participating in
annual workshops held on site at Durham
Dance Centre. For instance, this year’s
summer intensive workshop is being
taught by Twitch from “So You Think You
Can Dance”. The dancers are having an amazing
time at the workshop.
At Durham Dance Centre all competitive and
recreational classes are taught in large spacious
studios with viewing windows. Its teaching sta
is highly quali ed and classes are o ered in
Kinderdance, Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical,
Acro, Tap and Musical Theatre. They o er a part-
time competitive program that o ers dancers
the opportunity to compete without having to
commit to the long hours at the studio and is less
expensive. As the studio owner, Tammy is proud to
say that, “I teach the youngest dancers in the studio
who can begin as young as 2 1/2 years old.”
For more information she invites you to visit
Durham Dance Centre at the Pickering Town Centre
registration booth from August 25 to 27. Registration
at the studio takes place from August 22 to 24. Also,
feel free to call 905-837-2528 or visit their website at
www.durhamdancecentre.com. Come join the team
and be a part of their 20th year celebrations!

Entering their 18th season of
operation the Durham West Girls
Hockey Association (DWGHA) will,
once again, provide a wide range
of hockey programs for the young
women and girls of Pickering/Ajax.
The Durham West Executive Council
and the membership can look forward
to another season of fun, excitement
and learning, through the many
programs we o er.
From Novice House League beginner,
to Junior AA Competitive elite and, all
points in between, there is place for all
here at Durham West. With a focus on
skills training for all levels, the Durham
West girls are given the tools they need to
succeed in the fast-paced game of female
hockey. Skating development is important
at all levels of the game and to that end
DWGHA has implemented and made this
training available to all.
The House League continues to flourish;
(this is the recreational side of our
Association) with the success of our entry
level fee of $150.00 for first time players
(applicable to Ajax/Pickering residents
only). “We recognized that the start-up
cost for new players was high enough
for parents whose kids just want to give
it a try”, says President Muto, “so we felt
it was our responsibility to keep things
affordable for these new players to the
game.” With the player
numbers constantly on
the rise, it seems many
girls and parents agree,
once they have had a fun-
filled season, it seems
there is no turning back
… they become hockey
players!
If you feel the need
… “the need for speed”,
then the fast paced
world of, “LIGHTNING HOCKEY” could be
calling you! Offering competitive levels
from Novice Teddy Bear to Junior AA, the
Durham West Lightning
are regarded to be a force
in the evolution of female
hockey players. Jennifer
Wakefield, a “Lightning”
program graduate, has
risen through the ranks of
Canada’s highly successful
women’s hockey team
and onto the world stage.
The “Lightning” girls are
the class of the Lower
Lakes Female Hockey
Association; respected for their reputation
for a gritty yet, clean style of play. In
DWGHA, we also stress skills training for
all our players. Goaltending development
has been a key to our success. Over the
years, we have used the “Saves” program
and, last season Puck Hogs, featuring
Scott “Hotty Scotty” Della Vedova, Matt
Bourgeois and, former DWGHA Elite net
minder, Jessica Rankin.
The future is looking bright here at
Durham West, so why not come out and
have some fun and kick some ice!
See you at the rinks!

Congratulations to all the dancers,
parents and teachers for being a part
of Protégé Dance Company’s inaugural
year! What an incredible year it has
been! “We have been privileged to
create new friendships while making
a mark in the community and dance
industry. Celebrating the wonderful
e orts and achievements of both our
recreational and competitive students,
has been an honour. We thank all the
parents for entrusting us with your
children and all the students for
working so hard. Our success is your
success- thank you,” says Christine
Tavares, artistic director.
As educators, Protégé Dance Company does
its utmost to challenge, inspire and help each
child reach their personal best. “Whether
we are shaping your child’s technique, style,
or individual artistry, more importantly, we
believe in guiding children into con dent
young adults, who will conduct themselves
with integrity outside the studio walls, and for
years to come.”
Protégé Dance Company is proud to
provide high quality dance training to all
students. “Whether your child is enrolled in
the recreational program or competitive,
he/she is guaranteed to have a certi ed
and quali ed adult instructor, who not
only knows the material at hand, but also
understands how to break it down to
teach it patiently and thoroughly.”
Protégé Dance Company
emphasizes proper education; where
sound technical training prepares
students for both career and post-
secondary opportunities.
In its rst year, they were
thrilled to make their mark! “Our
senior dancers were asked to
perform at the Canadian Cystic
Fibrosis Gala in Markham, and
the Children’s Foundation Gala in
Toronto. Our young Aeyla Webster,
was cast in the CBC TV series “What’s
Your News”. Meanwhile, two of our
graduates have both been accepted
into George Brown College’s Dance
Performance program this coming
Fall, continuing their education in dance.
Congratulations dancers!”
In addition, their competitive team
attended four prestigious competitions
in Ontario and came away with many,
many overalls and adjudicator choice
awards. Some of the highlights include:
Winning Miss Teen Title at Candance, Three
Choreographer’s Award from Terpsichore
and Bedazzled, receiving the Highest Marks
in Jazz, Acro and Hip Hop at Dancefest, along
with many more solo, duet, trio and group
overalls shared by all their dancers!
“These are just a few of the
winnings but as a studio, we
were acknowledged time and
time again at how polite and professional
our students were by both the competition
directors and judges themselves, and that
at the end of the day, means more than any
winning. Thank you for making us so proud
dancers, and exemplifying the real meaning
behind competition.”
Lastly, their year-end show “VIVA
PROTEGE” featuring both the recreational
and competitive dancers was a hit!
“With age appropriate costumes and
choreography, parents and friends
witnessed the wonderful growth behind their
child in this seamless and organized show
that took place at a local high school, one
afternoon, in under three hours. “
“With all that being said, we look back on our
rst year with many joyous memories, where
the kids bonded, the parents laughed, and
the teachers cheered! Needless to say, we are
anxious to kick o our second season.”
If you would like to be a part of Protégé Dance
Company, please come by for a visit! They are
more than happy to meet with you and help
answer any of your questions.
Classes are o ered from three years to
advanced, boys and girls, recreational and
competitive, in Pre-Dance, Combo, Ballet, Jazz,
Tap, Acro, Lyrical and Hip Hop.
“Come dance with us and
become one of our protégés! “
Happy Dancing Everyone!

Rock sniper finished
among top scorers
HeRb GaRbutt
newsroom@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- At the start of the sea-
son, the Ajax Rock had some high
expectations for Jordan MacIn-
tosh, the third overall pick in the
Major Series Lacrosse draft.
It took him all of 30 seconds into
his first game to exceed them.
“He took the first draw, drew
it back, took (the ball) down the
floor and set up a scoring chance
on the transition,” said Rock
coach and general manager Paul
St. John. “We just looked at each
other and said, ‘Are you kidding
me?’”
MacIntosh would finish his first
Major Series game with two goals,
including the tying goal in a 10-9
win over Kitchener-Waterloo. He
went on to finish the season with
60 points and a team-leading 32
goals in 17 games.
His outstanding season was rec-
ognized when he was named the
league’s top rookie. In winning
the award, MacIntosh beat former
Burlington Chiefs teammate Kiel
Matisz. The first overall pick in
the MSL draft, Matisz had 15 goals
and 36 points in 14 games for the
Brooklin Redmen.
“The rookie of the year is a spe-
cial one because you only get
one shot at it,” the Oakville native
said. “I knew when I got drafted
that I was going to a new team
and they were younger so I could
step in and make an impact, but I
couldn’t really imagine putting up
those kind of numbers. You look
at that list (of top scorers) and it’s
guys I looked up to when I was a
young lacrosse player -- Shawn
Williams, John Grant, John Tava-
res.”
And there was MacIntosh right
there with them, sixth in the league
in goals and 12th in points despite
missing the first four games of the
year while finishing school at RIT.
Although he knew he was get-
ting a talented player, St. John
didn’t expect the kind of produc-
tion MacIntosh delivered. But
what surprised him even more
was his skill on faceoffs.
“Some nights he dominated
against some of the best in the
business,” the Rock coach said.
“And he’s only going to get better.”
MacIntosh’s well-rounded play
did not go unnoticed. IL Indoor.
com named him the league’s best
transition player noting “his speed
and finishing ability make him the
most dangerous transition player
in MSL.”
With his National Lacrosse
League draft year approaching,
MacIntosh certainly proved capa-
ble of holding his own with many
of the same players he will face in
the pro ranks. He hopes his play
this summer will boost his draft
status but it has already provided
him with the confidence that he
can compete at the highest level.
“You want to prove you can pay
at the next level,” the 21 year old
said. “The NLL is a cut above,
you’re playing the best of the
best every single night. Crack-
ing the roster is not expected but
this summer gives me confidence
going into camp.”
There was one aspect of his
rookie season MacIntosh would
have liked to improve upon --
helping the team earn more wins.
Ajax, in just its second MSL sea-
son, finished the year in last place
with a 3-20 record.
MacIntosh has had success at
each of his previous stops -- a
national championship with the
Oakville Buzz in Jr. B, helping
the Burlington Chiefs achieve a
team record for wins in Jr. A and
back-to-back NCAA tournament
appearances at RIT.
But in MacIntosh, St. John
believes the Rock have a key
building block to improve the
team’s fortunes.
“His skill level is excellent and
he’s determined. You can see it
in practice and warm-ups. He’s
always working at getting bet-
ter. You can’t teach that,” he said.
“We don’t want him to get too
far ahead but he could be one of
the best in the game. His future is
bright and he’s got the passion to
want it.”

Who’s got some tickets? Game sold out
bRad KeLLy
bkelly@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- If you happen to see a
poster promoting Friday’s Dur-
ham Region Roller Derby game
in Ajax, and have a marker handy,
there is a line at the bottom that is
no longer necessary.
The $15 admission fee for pur-
chasing a ticket at the door -- for-
get about it. The game is sold out.
All 300, $10 advance tickets for
the 8 p.m. start at Village Arena
have been bought up.
“That’s crazy, right?” asks Melis-
sa Vince, an Oshawa resident who
skates under the name Beat Boxx
McRocks. “We’re so excited.”
The game, dubbed the Gibson’s
Cup, is the first-ever hosted by the
local organization, and will fea-
ture the Atom Smashers against
the Motor City Madames.
“People want to see us play
derby,” adds Vince of the popu-
larity of the sold-out event. “Peo-
ple want to watch. It’s a great
sport. It’s entertaining. It’s the
best thing I’ve ever done.”
The organization is about 50
members strong currently, with
another training camp planned
for September, where it’s hoped
another 25 to 50 members will be
added, says Vince.
Before even getting to Friday’s
game, members have complet-
ed an 8-10 week training camp
to learn the basic skills, and then
must pass a standard test from
the Women’s Flat Track Derby
Association. Once that is com-
pleted, players are put on a farm
team, and from this, teams are
able to draft players to their ros-
ter once their skills and endur-
ance meet the standards.
In addition to the league in
Durham Region, there are three
leagues in Toronto, two in each
of Kingston, Ottawa and Mon-
treal, as well as others in Innisfil
and Peterborough. The Durham
league puts together an all-star
team that travels to the various
other centres for games.
Next year, the league is plan-
ning a full season from May to
October, with interleague games
as well as all-star showcases,
welcoming teams in from other
leagues.
For this year, the idea was to
start small and manageable.
“We just want to make sure all
goes well and that we have a good
understanding before we have
too many games,” adds Vince.

Yakura wins pair of golds at Junior PanAms
KINGSTON, JAMAICA -- Nyl Yakura was
part of a Canadian team that ended a 10-year
drought at the Junior PanAm Badminton
championships held in Jamaica.
The first three days were designated for the
Team event which included nine countries:
Brazil, Guatemala, Peru, Puerto Rico, Jamai-
ca, U.S.A., Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados
and Canada. The other four days were for
individual events, with players representing
16 countries.
For the past decade, Canada was not able
to capture the gold in the team event, but
not this year. Team Canada consisted of Nyl
Yakura (Pickering), Andrew Lau (Markham),
Andrew Wilkinson, Bethany So, Jody Chan
all from Toronto, Clinton Wong (BC), Adrian-
na Giuffre and Kacey Tung (AB), and coach
Ram Nayyar.
The road to the finals included Team Can-
ada defeating Brazil (3-2) and Puerto Rico
(5-0) in their pool. Canada then defeated
Jamaica (3-0) and Guatemala (3-0) to reach
the finals. Meanwhile, Brazil defeated Peru
(3-1) and USA (3-2) to reach the finals, but
Canada prevailed to capture the gold medal.
In individual play, Yakura was the top seed
in all events, including singles, doubles and
mixed doubles, due to last year’s results.
In singles, it was an easy run to the quar-
terfinals, but when he faced Heymard Hum-
blers of Guatemala, the Pickering resident
faced some challenges. Yakura lost the match
21-23, 21-19 and 19-21.
In doubles, partnered with Clinton Wong,
(who he had never played with before), the
pair seemed to work together on court quite
well and managed to reach the finals against
a well established pair, Andrew Lau/Andrew
Wilkinson of Toronto, who won silver at the
Jr. National Championships. Yakura and
Wong lost their first game 16-21, but contin-
ued with their consistent play, managed to
win the second game 21-17 and final game
21-8 to capture the gold.
In mixed doubles, the whole podium was
owned by the Canadian athletes. Canada
entered four pairs in the draw, and three out
of four took the podium.
Yakura partnered with Adrianna Giuffre,
defeating Andrew Lau/Bethany So (2011
Ontario Provincial U19 Champions) in the
semifinals 21-11 and 21-10. In the finals
Yakura and Giuffre faced another established
pair from Toronto in Andrew Wilkinson/Jody
Chan. With extra hard work, Yakura/Giuf-
fre took the rubber match 21-18, 17-21 and
21-16, giving Yakura his second gold.
Yakura is now moving back home and
training in Markham, preparing for the 2011
Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man,
UK, Sept. 5-12, then off to the Belgian Open
Sept. 15-17. The 2011 World Junior Champi-
onships in Taiwan are also on the docket.
You can follow Yakura on his website www.

Jr. A LAcrosse
Warriors win Game 7 and
book trip to Minto Cup
shAwn cAyLey
scayley@durhamregion.com
WHITBY -- The Whitby Warriors saved
their best for last and because of that are
heading to the Minto Cup.
The Warriors came out on the right side
of a 7-6 decision in Game 7 of the Ontario
Junior A Lacrosse Association final against
the three-time defending champion Oran-
geville Northmen at the Tony Rose Memo-
rial Arena Sunday night.
“We only gave up 34 shots on goal I think
and that was our best defensive perfor-
mance,” said coach Derek Keenan a day
later. “I also thought we had a lot of good
offensive chances throughout the game
really and we ran the floor better than we
had all series.
“Probably for the first time in the series
we out loose balled them. We won the
large majority of faceoffs ... it was just a
great effort.”
An effort that was spearheaded by
Keenan’s veteran players, a group that
stepped up and showed they had one
more chapter to write before closing the
book on their respective junior careers.
It was John LaFontaine, though, who
made the biggest save of the game, series
and season for the Warriors.
With 17 seconds to go and in possession
of the ball, Keenan yanked Higgins from
the Whitby net in favour of an extra run-
ner to even things up as Orangeville had
their goalie out for a six-on-five advantage
to press for a turnover that would save
their season.
A shocking call to make in the minds of
many with so much on the line in Game 7,
it should be noted that Whitby pulled the
same move in Game 3 in Orangeville and
proceeded to move the ball up the floor
and put down the empty netter.
Not this time.
Mark Cockerton killed some time off
running the ball out before slipping on
the floor. A battle for the loose ball then
ensued, which on most occasions would
allow for the player returning to the bench
for the goalie plenty of time to do so.
Problem is, whoever was given that
responsibility forgot and when Oran-
geville came out with the ball and fired
a shot on goal, LaFontaine -- who was
named MVP of the playoffs -- was left to
do his best Higgins impression, getting his
leg in the way of the shot to preserve the
victory.
Whitby will be making its first appear-
ance at the Minto Cup since winning it all
as hosts in 1999. The four-team tourna-
ment runs Aug. 20-28 in Okotoks, Alberta.

HOW TO
WRITE AN
EFFECTIVE
CLASSIFIED
AD
Start your ad with the item
for sale, service you are
offering, or job title of the
person you seek to hire.
• Be descriptive. The
more information you
provide to the reader, the
better the responses will
be to your ad.
• Always include the
price of an item for sale.
• Avoid abbreviations.
They make your ad
harder to read and less
effective.
• Use larger type, white
space, or decorative
characters, such as
stars, to bring attention
to your ad.
• Run your ad for an
ample length of time.
Remember, as soon as
you get results, you can
cancel at any time during
regular business hours.
Call us today!We’ll be
glad to help you.
