HealtH Boy undergoes rabies treatment after dog attack ajax-Pickering hospital reviews procedures after fax not sent ParvaneH Pessian ppessian@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- It’s going to take awhile for Justin Parker to feel like a nor- mal 10-year-old boy again. He’ll be spending the last weeks of his summer holidays indoors after he was attacked by a dog out- side a Whitby convenience store at the Garden Street and Rossland Road East plaza on July 30. The attack, which was unprovoked and came from behind, required five stitches to his leg. “I went to the store to get candy with my friends and I walked past this dog and it jumped at me and scratched my leg,” recalls Justin, who’s recovering at home and receiving treatment for a possible rabies infection. The dog was one of two being walked by a woman who imme- diately left the area as Justin’s friends rushed to his side. While appalled by the seemingly indifferent behaviour of the mys- tery woman, Justin’s father Gerald says he was even more disturbed by how the matter was handled by Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering hos- pital, where he was taken. “They asked me to fill out a form that is part of the statutory protocol for when a dog bite has occurred ... which is the beginning of a sequence of painful injections that need to be given within 48 hours,” says Mr. Parker. Under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, any physi- cian, veterinarian, police officer or any other person who has infor- mation concerning an animal bite or other animal contact that may result in rabies is required to notify the Region’s health depart- ment. “The legislation indicates ... (that) once anyone knows of an animal/human interaction that results in an injury, they’re sup- posed to contact the medical offi- cer of health as soon as possible,” says Glendene Collins, spokes- woman for the Durham Region Health Department. But several days later and still no word from the Region for direction about the necessary treatment, Mr. Parker called to inquire. “I spoke to a public health inspector who (told) me that they had received no report and he (was) very concerned about that,” Mr. Parker says. “My son should have started to have (rabies treat- ment) within 48 hours and we needed to expedite that process.” Determined to figure out where the ball was dropped, Mr. Parker says he was bounced from one official to the next, pushing the administration of Justin’s first rabies shots to Aug. 4 -- five days after the attack. “It hasn’t been an easy week try- ing to get to the bottom of all this because we have been left out, like a boat in the middle of the lake, by everybody in this process,” he says. “If I hadn’t stepped in as a father ... my son could be running around rabid right now.” In a letter to Mr. Parker from Dr. Gary Mann, program chief in the department of emergency medi- cine for the Rouge Valley Health System, an animal bite/exposure report was initiated -- but not completed -- by staff in the Ajax hospital’s emergency department as it was not signed off as being faxed. “At this time, based on our investigation it would appear that the report was not faxed in accor- dance with our procedures,” the letter says, adding that Rouge Val- ley will be re-emphasizing the need to ensure the timely trans- mission of important reporting documentation to its health care team. “Once our investigation is com- plete we will provide you with the details of the actions that we will be taking to ensure that this kind of omission does not happen again.” Meanwhile, the Region is ask- ing for the public’s assistance in finding the owner of the dog to check its shots history and decide whether Justin’s rabies treatment can be discontinued. A goalie with the Whitby Iro- quois ‘A’ soccer team, Justin is mostly disappointed he won’t be able to play sports much during the month-long treatment. “I hope that someone will find the owner of the dog,” he says. Both dogs are described as being small, one black and one white, and similar to the West High- land Terrier breed. The woman, believed to be between 50 and 60 years old, was last seen heading toward the Coffee Time Donuts at about noon that day. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Durham Region Health Department’s Environmen- tal Help Line at 905-723-3818 or 1-888-777-9613 as soon as possi- ble. ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland WHITBY -- Justin Parker, 10, was attacked by a dog and has to get rabies shots. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 12, 20114 P Limited spaces available in Summer Camps! From page 1 Police alleged Ms. Peck had injured the woman, an Alzheimer’spatient, while moving her contrary to policy, then failed to report the injury to super- visors. Ms. Peck denies the alle- gations. “The police came up with a theory of what hap- pened and in the process needed a target,” she said. “I was that.” Oshawa lawyer Alan Risen, who defended Ms. Peck, said a forensic exam- ination of the “extremely fragile” resident led to no conclusions as to how or when she sustained the fractured femur that led to her death. “When more medi- cal information became known the Crown’s case became very suspect,” Mr. Risen said. “They can’t say when or how (the injury) occurred.” It appears police “laid the charge before they had all the forensic evidence,” he said. After a review of the evi- dence acting Durham Region Crown attorney Greg O’Driscoll formal- ly withdrew the charges against Ms. Peck on July 27. Mr. Risen praised the prosecutor’s action. “I really appreciated Greg O’Driscoll taking the bull by the horns at the front end of this case,” he said. Ms. Peck’s ordeal may have stretched out for months and even years if the case had gone to trial, Mr. Risen said. “Obviously it’s had a very serious impact on her life,” he said. “She was arrested. She was held for a bail hearing.” Mr. O’Driscoll was away from his office last week and couldn’t be reached for comment. Crime Four busted in Pickering drug investigation Cocaine and cash seized from home during police search PICKERING -- Four peo- ple are facing charges after a street-level drug investigation led to a search of a Pickering home Tuesday night. Cocaine, cash and other drugs were seized during the investigation, Dur- ham police said. Officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Whites Road and Finch Avenue at about 9:45 p.m., arresting a Peter- borough man who was found to be driving while under suspension. Cops found more than 60 grams of cocaine while searching the man. The driver and a pas- senger were busted for drug possession. That seizure led to the execution of a search warrant at a Whites Road home where cops seized cocaine, marijuana and magic mushrooms and more than $3,300 in cash. Paul Clarke, 43, and 19-year-old John Morn- ingstar, of Park Street North in Peterborough, are charged with posses- sion of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Mr. Clarke was also charged with several driv- ing offences. Oliver Martin, 35, and Jenipher Martin, 32, of Whites Road, Pickering, are charged with drug possession and posses- sion for the purpose of trafficking. HealtH care Special treatment needed for special cases To the editor: Re: ‘Durham MD faces suspension over fee’, news, durhamregion.com, Aug. 3, 2011. Do we really want Dr. Dockrill to have her licence suspended for having a big heart? I do not know the details, but it seems that her practice goes over and above the qual- ity offered by other practitioners. I believe the problem is that we value free health care in Canada more than log- ical health care. The Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons look at extra fees and their kneejerk reaction is that it should not happen. I believe the fees charged to patients should be equal and egalitarian, and should be covered by OHIP, but I also believe this is not a perfect world. If a doctor offers more than what is covered by OHIP, the only solution is to charge extra fees. If you have the money, go to private health care. Other doctors will pick up the slack. If these rules cannot be revised, it would be a shame for Dr. Dockrill to have her licence revoked or for her to lose patients. What we need is special treatment for special cases, something not currently allowed. Brad Hogg Oshawa Mental HealtH Thoughtful people weighed in here as well To the editor: Re: ‘Changes to mental health system watchdog could threaten body’s indepen- dence: Elliott’, news, durhamregion.com, July 21, 2011. Health Minister Deb Matthews says, “Some very thoughtful people have raised issues about this plan and I think it’s really important to listen. At this point, I need to better understand what the concerns are.” Where was the minister’s interest in lis- tening when she was presented with con- cerns raised by some very thoughtful peo- ple about the recent changes in the Ado- lescent Unit at Ontario Shores? She did not even acknowledge receipt of information sent to her office regarding that matter. My experience has shown that her office likes to pass the responsibility for many decisions under her purview to the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). I am surprised that she did not refer the reporter covering the Patient Advocate to the LHIN. What the heck was she thinking when she said it’s difficult to consult pub- licly when unionized jobs are being dis- cussed? Most government services are provided by unionized workers. My impression is that OPSEU welcomes transparent pub- lic debate. Thankfully, this buck passing, uninformed, ill advised, indecisive minis- ter and her equally challenged and secre- tive leader will no longer be in power come October. Speaking of the Liberals and power gen- eration...oh, that’s another issue that I am reminded of with every hydro bill. Jim Martin Whitby elton JoHn If you bought a ticket, see the show To the editor: Congrats to those of you lucky enough to get tickets to the Elton John show. I feel better about my bad luck at not getting tickets having heard about people lining up for so long with fingers crossed. I went the phone/computer/BlackBerry browser route but met with failure. One thing that did rile me was the imme- diate availability of tickets on reselling sites like Stubhub. If you didn’t get seats, and you’re willing to pay, there are tickets out there for you. You just have to be will- ing to part with at least $300 a seat, and I saw some for $1,400 each. It pains me that people who have no desire to see the show tied up the lines and prevented us who did want tickets so that they might profit. This isn’t the free market at work, it’s piracy. Scalping used to be illegal, now it’s active- ly promoted by companies like eBay, and Ticketmaster. George Lakins Oshawa & A Metroland Media Group Ltd. Formally launched last week in Ajax, the non-profit DCCC aims to promote inte- gration, Chinese culture, social and recre- ational opportunities for local residents and develop resources for cultural exchange programs, among other things. The timing the DCCC’s launch in Dur- ham is fortuitous as the Chinese commu- nity grows (DCCC president Tao Qu esti- mates there are thousands of Chinese who now call Durham Region home) and seeks to build bonds with the larger community. To that end and to the DCCC’s credit, it is making an early effort to establish the group as open and inclusive to all Durham Region residents, not just members of the region’s Chinese community. It’s important to note, too, that the Chi- nese community in Canada is growing fast- er than the overall population, according to Statistics Canada, an indication that Cana- da is the adopted home of choice for many Chinese immigrants. New Chinese Canadi- ans also represent the largest non-European ethnic group in the country, says StatsCan. And considering the global economic rise of China in the last generation as it adopt- ed free market policies, joined the World Trade Organization and introduced its mas- sive market into the global trading system, Durham Region business leaders could well find opportunities for important network- ing among the membership of the local DCCC. The formal creation and launch of the DCCC, then, can and should benefit both its members and larger community in Dur- ham. But while we cheerfully encourage residents to learn more about the DCCC, we equally encourage DCCC members to reach beyond its comfortable and familiar confines and build connections with other cultural and social groups in Durham with a view to building knowledge, bonds and relationships. Here’s hoping the auspicious beginning of the non-profit group continues to be reflected in an active, successful and welcoming organization that, like much of the rest of Canada, is multicultural, tolerant, open and inclusive. If it’s true that our collective strength lies in our diversity, Durham residents can expand their cultural knowledge, make new friends or business acquaintances, and embrace the group and its goals in the region’s com- munities. Sharing cultural practices, learning about our global neighbours, and expanding our knowledge about each will serve Durham well going forward. A message from Durham Tourism I often reflect about how lucky we are, as residents of Durham Region, to live in such a beautiful area that offers countless recre- ational activities, picturesque landscapes, a balance of urban and rural lifestyles, and grows some of the best-tasting food around. Durham Region’s rich farmland grows everything from A to Z -- apples to zucchi- nis -- and everything in between. During August, there is one crop that truly allows you to taste the Durham difference: blueber- ries. You’ve never tasted blueberries, until you’ve had fresh Durham Region blueber- ries. Durham Region shines when it comes to growing this finicky crop, as blueberries require a perfect soil pH level. In fact, only 16 per cent of Ontario is suitable for growing blueberries. I’ll say it again: we are so lucky to live in an area where we can enjoy such abundant, diverse and delicious local food. You can find fresh Durham Region blue- berries at your local farmers’ market or on- farm store. Visit www.durhamfarmfresh. ca to find one close to you. But for a truly unique experience, why not take your family to pick your own? My husband and I recently took our two young boys blueberry picking at Wilmot Orchards in Clarington. It was a fun and easy family activity, and a great way to enjoy the warm weather, while teaching the kids about where their food comes from. High bush blueberry plants grow from five to seven feet tall, and most of the berries are right at arm’s reach. We filled so many bas- kets in no time. I even froze a bunch so that I can enjoy fresh, local berries all year. We like to use them in desserts, smoothies and jams. For my boys, the favourite part of the day was stopping in at the Appleberries Café, located on the farm at Wilmot Orchards. The café sells homemade organic blueberry ice cream, scones and other delightful blueber- ry treats. Get out and taste Durham Region’s boun- tiful blueberries before this crop is over. To find out more about local food and day trip adventures on the farm, visit www.durham- tourism.ca and connect with Durham Tour- ism on Twitter at @DurhamTourism. Fernie House Child and Youth Services on Rosebank Road South is a charitable boarding facil- ity that has long housed children aged nine to 14 in the care of the Children’s Aid Society. After resi- dents recently noticed renova- tions, and a number of parents realized the Fernie House kids were no longer attending the nearby Rosebank Public School, they started asking questions. They then learned Fernie House is no longer caring for young chil- dren and is now housing and rehabilitating young male offend- ers aged 12 to 18. The open-custo- dy detention centre began taking young offenders in July. Residents are expressing fears for the safety of their children since Fernie House neighbours Rosebank Public School, and they packed the stuffy Franklin Room at the Petticoat Creek Community Centre to question officials on the humid evening of Aug. 8. “How can we revoke this ugly situation?” said concerned resi- dent Myrtle Noonan. Residents have started writing to Laurel Brauten, Minister of Chil- dren and Youth Services, since the change was approved by the Prov- ince earlier this year. A number of residents refused to speak to a reporter for fear of being identified. Patrick Reber, executive direc- tor of Fernie House, said plans for the young offenders began in Feb- ruary and the facility planned to hold an open house this month. “We have always been accessi- ble and available to talk to com- munity members,” he said. Ms. Noonan said the residents should have been informed before the young offenders moved in. “People only hide things if they’re not comfortable with shar- ing the truth,” she said. When residents questioned what would happen if any of the youth escape the facility, Mr. Reber said they’d probably leave the area. “They’re running away,” he said. Fernie House, established by the Presbyterian Church in Canada, opened in Pickering in 1972. Longtime resident Liz Schu- movich recalled the trouble that took place in the 1970s when the Fernie House was “quietly slipped into our community.” At the time, 18 boys were living in the house. But she said once the Rosebank Residents’ Associa- tion got involved, the rules were changed and no more than 10 boys lived there at a time, Fernie House functioned quite well in the community. “Once again it appears that there is an obvious attempt to slip in a revised mandate during the summer to accommodate a Youth Correctional Facility. Obviously no lesson has been learned from the previous experience.” Mr. Reber reminded residents that up until 2000, Fernie House took young offenders before it started housing children due to high demand. Following recent changes to legislation, younger children are now being placed in group homes only as a last resort, so the Rosebank program shut down. Fernie House chose to go back to its roots and serve youth in conflict with the law. “No youth convicted of a sexual offence is admitted into Rosebank -- ever,” he assured residents. There is a teacher on site, recre- ation on site, and the boys come and leave by car or van only, Mr. Reber said. “The boys never leave the house without supervision,” he added. At least two staff members are on site at all times and only five or six boys usually live there at once. The license allows for up to nine. Pickering’s Ward 1 councillors and Mayor Dave Ryan attended the meeting. “This is a provincial issue,” he said. “This is provincial jurisdic- tion, other than zoning, which has not changed, so the City has no role.” He said the City planned to inspect Fernie House to ensure there were no structural changes being made, which would require a zoning permit, and added he’d fight for the community. “I will advocate directly to the minister that’s responsible on your behalf,” he said. Fernie House is hosting an open house meeting on Aug. 15. Most people don’t get enough exercise DURHAM -- Most people, both young and old, don’t get enough exercise, but a newly-developed toolkit could help. The Durham Region health department has put together the Physical Activity Family Toolkit, which is part of the Move Yourself to Better Health campaign. Lindsey Forkun, a pub- lic health nurse, says the toolkit was developed “because physical activity levels are quite low in the area.” Only seven per cent of Canadian children and youths get enough daily exercise, while only 15 per cent of adults get enough, she notes. Of elementary school- aged children, “only 23 per cent were considered moderately active,” she adds. Physical activity guide- lines released earlier this year by the Canadi- an Society for Exercise Physiology note that for health benefits, children and youth need at least 60 minutes of moderate activity every day, while adults need a minimum of 150 minutes a week. The activity should make a person’s heart beat faster and cause them to sweat a little. Ms. Forkun notes people are spending more time each day sitting and less time moving. “Incorporating activity into your everyday life can be enjoyable and fun and you may be surprised how it can leave you feeling less stressed,” she states. “Physical activity has so many benefits. It improves memory, it improves the ability to learn. It can help at school. For adults, it can help at work.” The kit aims to help families better under- stand the benefits of being active, how to make physical activity a part of everyday life and tips for success. “There are free and easy tips. A family can find it hard to be active. It shows how to make activity part of their everyday routine,” Ms. Forkun states. Numbers of people either overweight or obese are “on the rise. “It’s becoming quite a crisis,” she says. The Physical Activity Family Toolkit is free and can be ordered by visiting www.durham.ca or call- ing Durham Health Con- nection Line at 905-666- 6241 or 1-800-841-2729.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 12, 201110 AP 2011 W i n t e r & S u m m e r G e a r 75%Offupto ALL WINTER JACKETS $99 ALL JUNIOR WINTER JACKETS $49 SNOWBOARDS FROM $99 SKI + BINDING PACKAGES FROM $199 AUGUST 1 9 - 2 1 2012 New P r o d u c t ARRIVING DAILY New A r r i v a l s for B A c k t o S c h o o l 25%Off 1618 DUNDAS ST. The Durham Youth Orchestra and The Ontario Philharmonic, with the visiting Heidelberg Youth Chamber Orchestra from Germany, will perform the work as part of the musical lineup in An Evening To End Polio, Sept. 2 and 3 at 8 p.m. at the Regent Theatre. The concerts are Rotary Foundation fundraisers for the EndPolioNow polio eradication campaign. “It’ll be fabulous,” says DYO direc- tor John Beaton. “It’s the first time (DYO orchestra members) will be playing in the Regent Theatre, so that will spice up the opportunity.” The DYO is made up of about 30 youths aged 10 to 19 from across the region. An auditioned orchestra, the members have played in a school music program or taken private lessons. Beaton says the DYO has been prepar- ing for the concert since the spring. In addition to the opportunity to the play the Regent, orchestra members have a lot to look forward to. “They will receive coaching from Ontar- io Philharmonic members in advance, in case they are rusty,” he says. Four coaching sessions will take place in advance of the concerts. As well, DYO musicians will have the opportunity to make new friends visiting from overseas. Beaton says Heidelberg Youth Chamber Orchestra members will be billeting with DYO members. “This will be a major event for our region,” states OP conductor Marco Pari- sotto in an e-mail. “Apparently this is the first symphony concert for the EndPolioNow campaign in Canada,” he continued. “There was a similar concert in Chicago just a few months ago with the great violinist Itzhak Perlman. It’s a wonderful event we are involved in, participating in an amazing medico-social cause, celebrating a medi- cal wonder (eradication of polio), cele- brating through great works of music, cel- ebrating our youth as well.” He explains that the Heidelberg Youth Chamber Orchestra will perform its piec- es in the first half of the program. “They are simply outstanding and awe- inspiring musicians from Germany, con- ducted by their excellent conductor Thomas Kalb,” Parisotto says. The second half features the three orchestra’s performing the Beethoven symphony, which Parisotto describes as “one of the masterpieces of humanity.” He notes that the symphony’s second movement is part of the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning film, The King’s Speech. Founded in 2002, the HYCO is com- prised of some of the finest young musi- cians in the Rhine-Neckar and Neckar- Odenwald regions of Germany. In the German Orchestra Competition 2008, of 130 competing ensembles, the HYCO was the only ensemble to receive the high- est possible points as the best classical orchestra. Beaton notes that the DYO per- formed Symphony No. 7 in its spring con- cert this year, describing it as “a very chal- lenging piece.” As Beaton is constantly losing play- ers to university, he says there are always opportunities for young musicians to get involved in the DYO. Getting with the Big Dogz nazareth pull into Oshawa Saturday night Howzabout a little hair of the dog this weekend, hair of the Big Dogz even. Scot- tish rockers Nazareth pull into Le Roi Sat- urday night. Locals One Divided will open. Nazareth has a bit of a fondness for Cana- dians it seems, having taken their name from The Band’s The Weight, and had a hit with a cover of Joni Mitchell’s This Flight Tonight. The group is touring its lat- est release Big Dogz and will follow up the Canuck dates with gigs in Russia and Bra- zil. They are probably best known for the 1975 album Hair Of The Dog. One Divided is three Oshawa lads who bonded over a common love for solid rock ‘n roll. They’ve been together for about three years and have an independent EP and a full length Shape Your Life which received Best Rock Recording of 2010 by the Durham Regional Music Society. They also won Best Live Act so there’s a heads up on their show right there. The trio of Matt Silver (lead guitar/vox), Tyler M (bass) and Matt Godin (drums) have had airplay on 94.9 and are set to release their new single Good Reasons in the fall. While their sound is a conglomeration of all their individual and varied influences the band does cite Oshawa rock bands Hail The Vil- lain and Cauterize as inspiration. Plenty of good reasons then to check out this show, some past, some present and lot of future. Check out www.onedivided. com <http://www.onedivided.com> for further information. Both Andre Wright and Emma Kikulis wore gold medal smiles upon their return from Ottawa. Wright was a double gold medal winner after racing to first place finishes in both the U18 110m hurdles and 4x100m relay, while Kikulis won her gold in the U18 high jump, repeating her performance from a year ago when she won the U17 division in the same event. For Wright, who will enter Grade 12 at Dunbarton High School in a few weeks, the expectations were high heading into nation- als. “I expected to win,” the hurdles said the Durham Legion Athletics club member con- fidently. “I was happy I won, but I wanted a (per- sonal best) to end the season.” His winning time in Ottawa was just off his pb of 14.29. In the 4x100m relay, he was part of a team that set a Canadian youth record in a blistering time of 41.94. It has been a busy summer for Wright, who also competed at the World Youth Champi- onships in France, but clipping the first cou- ple of hurdles hindered his performance. Beyond this school year, his wish is to stay in Canada to go to university, leaning to Windsor at this point. For Kikulis, winning gold in Ottawa has become a habit, owning the high jump podi- um two years in a row. Last year she won the U17 division, clearing 1.66m, while this year she repeated with a personal best jump of 1.70m. “I didn’t go in with any expectations. I just wanted to do a personal best. That was my goal,” she said of the mindset going in. A member of the Lightning Athletics Club, her coach, Gary Lubin, wasn’t surprised that she bested the field of 20 competitors. “She was absolutely perfect,” he said. “She did everything right. She was on the money. She knows what to do when it’s time.” Kikulis has begun the process of filling out online questionnaires to NCAA schools as she prepares to enter Grade 12 at Pine Ridge. She has every intention of earning a DI scholarship to the United States, with a preference to going somewhere warm. It was a great game, with the Dolphins erasing an 18-14 lead in the last 23 seconds to preserve an undefeated season, and clinch the championship. There was no doubt the Bramp- ton Bulldogs would not come pre- pared this time around, after suf- fering their first loss in two years to the Dolphins in the regular sea- son. Their tenacity was evident in the first 16 seconds, when their main receiver bolted to the end zone for a touchdown. The Dolphins’ Bailey Grimes had a 45-yard rush after some spectacular blocking by Rasheed Tucker. Craig Gonsalves finished off the attack with the Dolphins first touchdown. D’Andrew Hig- gins booted the extra point, giving the Dolphins a 7-6 lead. The Bull- dogs replied with another touch- down, to make the score 12–7. At the opposite end, fullback Jaiden Cruz punched through the defense to give the Dolphins a 14-12 lead. The Bulldogs, as it would seem, sealed the win with another breakthrough to the end zone for an 18–14 advantage with 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Everyone, except the Dolphins coaching staff, thought this game was over. With the clock ticking and 23 seconds to go, quarter- back King Josiah Ambers made a pass to Jordan Wright, who high stepped his way around four defenders and broke loose into the end zone. The score was now 20–18 for the Dolphins with 10 seconds to go. The relentless Bulldogs tossed a ball to their intended receiver, but it was intercepted by a quick step- ping Rasheed Tucker, who sealed the win with a defensive touch- down as time expired. Michael (Pinball) Clemons, who was present at the game, commented that it was one of the most exiting minor league foot- ball games he has ever watched. The success of this Dolphins Peewee team must be attributed to dedicated and talented coach- ing staff and team managers Trevor McHaffie (head coach), John Peters, Rod Chung, Trevor Aitcheson, Greg Gonsalves, Has- son Abbas, Andrew Higgins, Ste- phen Duncan, Loni Dowe, Bon- nie Munro and Chuck Sansanwal. Players include Rasheed Tuck- er, Bailey Grimes, Jordan Wright, Craig Gonsalves, Quintyn Pet- tiford, Zachary Munro, Jaiden Cruz, Jayden Aprile, Kenneth Soutter, Tyrell Chung, Shandy Noel, Stephen Sullivan, Shoma- rie Peters, Cameron Tabatabaei, Brandon Romain, Jamani Bute, William Rock, Dimitri Mougos, Khalid Duncan, Josiah Ambers, Mickeal Gheorghian, Kevin Ibulu, Emmanuel Ndambi, D’Andres Higgins, Myles Sansanwal, Mat- thew Lopponen, Brendan Mur- phy, Tyler Hand, Jonathan Ibula and Will St. Hubert. Luckily, Shammy’s is also open to the public, which means you can have your vehicle looking and smelling like new! In business for over 10 years, Shammy’s is well known in the community for their great work. The great staff work hard to clean your vehicle inside and out. There are several different packages to choose from, or you can create your own custom package to suit your needs. The Silver package includes an exterior wash, clean rims, tires and wheel wells, clean windows inside and out, interior vacuum, interior wipe down and dress tires, starting from $29.95. The Gold package includes everything in the Silver package plus an interior shampoo starting from $120. To really make your vehicle shine inside and out, opt for the Platinum package, which adds a clay bar treatment, engine shampoo, exterior compound to remove light scratches and surface oxidization, high speed polish for a sparking shine, paint sealant applicant and minor paint touch-ups, starting at $150. Customers can also opt for fabric protection, an easy way to protect your vehicle’s fabrics from stains and spills. Treating the leather in your vehicle will help prevent cracking, stops the colour from fading and extends the life of the leather. To keep the new car shine, you can get paint seal protection, which will shield your paint from fading and excess oxidization. It also protects against acid rain, repels UV rays and prevents surface corrosion. In addition to detailing, you can bring your vehicle to Shammy’s to protect it from the elements. They offer two rust proofing services. The Dripless Oil System is an advanced treatment that does not drip off, offering superior results by leaving the protection where it should be - on your vehicle! They also offer Black Asphalt Undercoating & Clear Upper Body Rust Protection, which is a long lasting rust protection system that lasts the lifetime of your vehicle and also acts as a sound deadening for less road noise. This system dries solid, making it far superior to other products. Shammy’s offers free shuttle bus service for customers in Pickering, Ajax and Whitby. Shammy’s Auto Detailing is located at 933 Dillingham Road in Pickering. To make an appointment, please call (905) 831-2444 or for more information, please visit the website at www.shammysauto.com. Ca ll fo r details . durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 12, 201116 AP BasketBall Pro hoops team lands in Oshawa league holds press conference shawn Cayley scayley@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- The National Bas- ketball League of Canada offi- cially welcomed one of its newest franchises to the fold this week, announcing the arrival of a team in Oshawa. The club’s ownership group, fans, and even a trio of players on Canada’s men’s national team, were on hand for the announce- ment Wednesday afternoon at the General Motors Centre, the build- ing that will serve as home floor for the yet-to-be-named team. Gary Durrant, a former high school star from the Toronto area and NCAA division I player at Florida Atlantic University, served as the team representative at the press conference. As someone who spent many of his formative years trying to establish himself as a professional in Europe, he’s over- the-top excited about the possibili- ties he sees with the NBL Canada, and specifically in Oshawa. “I just think it’s wonderful. As a guy that had to get on a plane, year after year, and head to small towns and small communities where they don’t speak English and that kind of thing. With none of my friends there, all strangers ... this is just wonderful,” said Durrant, who played in Italy among other places during his jaunt overseas. “I know what this will mean not only for our guys that will get the opportu- nity to play, but also the kids.” And by that he refers to the fact that the key to getting this orga- nization established will depend on their ability to immerse them- selves in the culture of the City and region. “Having real life role models in guys that you can relate to is big. Not just guys like a Vince Carter, who came from the (United) States and was unbelievable. Kids don’t always connect with guys like that because it’s not realistic some- times for them,” Durrant explains. “Having role model type guys like that who can sit and talk to them because they have that kind of time, they’ll be right there, at their schools, at their community cen- tres, I think it’s a powerful thing.” As for just who those players will be, like many other issues sur- rounding the new franchise, that is yet to be determined. While a majority of the owner- ship group, featuring four men, including Canadian actor Mark Taylor, was on hand for Wednes- day’s announcement, the team is still a few days away from begin- ning construction on it’s inaugural roster, and coaching staff for that matter. The NBL Canada draft is being held at the Rogers Centre in Toron- to on Aug. 21, with Oshawa hold- ing the first overall pick. Durrant said he expects a coach will be in place prior to those pro- ceedings, insisting that the selec- tion will be made by someone more than qualified to do so. Another announcement expect- ed from the team between now and the draft will be an unveiling of the team name and logo. The team has been holding a contest for fans through its website (www.durhamnblcanada.com) allowing them to determine the nickname and look. Deadline for entries is Friday. “Part of naming something is owning it. We’re starting off with interactive, engaging ways to get people involved. We want to get people engaged and owning a piece of this team right away,” he said Durrant. saBrina Byrnes / Metroland OSHAWA -- Gary Durrant, team representative, addressed mem- bers of the media at a press conference Wednesday, where the National Basketball League of Canada announced that Oshawa has been formerly accepted to join the league.
