The crimes committed by Adam Squires in June of 2010 warranted a prison term of at least 13 years, but his cooperation with police and prosecutors earned him a reduced sen- tence, Ontario Court Justice Joseph De Filip- pis said in a written judgment released Tues- day. “There are important public policy rea- sons for rewarding an offender who coop- erates with the police or Crown,” Justice De Filippis wrote. “Ultimately, the true worth of the defendant’s cooperation may be deter- mined at the trial of others but at this time, it appears to be significant.” See DURHAM page 10 NEWS 3 Hefty fine Pickering man shoots turkeys illegally DANCE 13 On top of the world Ajax dancers show mettle, capture medals SPORTS 15 An Orange Soccer player bound for Syracuse durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 5, 20112 AP SEND A SCOUT TOCA MP! According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Pickering’s Vasko Nikolovs- ki was hunting on April 25, the opening morning of wild turkey season, when he entered a private property in the Town- ship of Mariposa in the City of Kawartha Lakes. After placing decoys on the private property, Mr. Nikolovski killed two wild turkeys, but failed to immediately attach game seals to the birds. The property owner contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources after hear- ing gunshots and finding Mr. Nikolovski trespassing on his land. On July 22 in a Lindsay courtroom, Mr. Nikolovski was fined $1,000 for unlaw- fully hunting while trespassing, $500 for unlawfully killing more than one turkey in a day and $500 for failing to immedi- ately attach a seal to a wild turkey. Wildlife A miracle of nature on our doorstep To the editor: Three weeks ago I was startled by a bird fluttering out of our hanging basket of yel- low petunias on our porch on Church Street. Thinking nothing of it, I watered the plant and went back into the house. The next day the bird was there again and I then realized that I had a nest of mourning doves in the basket. I took the basket down and saw two small white eggs. Research on the Internet disclosed that mourning dove eggs hatch in about two weeks and the baby birds need another two weeks before they can fly. I also learned that watering the plant could destroy the eggs and, as well, startle the parent into abandoning the nest. The father dove sits on the nest all day and the mother dove sits on the nest all night. So we have not watered the plant for three weeks and it has, of course, withered and died, but we have watched two atten- tive mourning doves attend to their nest every day. We now have two baby mourning doves who are stretching their wings and will soon be flying. So when you walk or drive by our home, do not look at the dead plant and think we are poor gardeners, but look more closely at the two little heads poking up and won- der at the cycle of life and the marvel of nature. John Clark Ajax Editor’s note: The hatchlings left the nest on Aug. 3, 2011. feedback No cure yet found for polio To the editor: Re: ‘Walking the walk in the fight to erad- icate polio’ editorial opinion, durhamre- gion.com, July 20, 2011. Your editorial encourages the heroic efforts of Rotary International in the fight against polio, but mistakenly opens with a reference to Dr. Jonas Salk’s “dedication to finding a cure” for the disease. Many older folks will remember that Jonas Salk, Albert Sabin and their collab- orators did not find a cure for polio in the late 1940s and early 1950s. They developed vaccines, administered either orally or with an injection, that immunized individ- uals and prevented them from contracting the disease at all. This is an important distinction as we combat polio today. The disease is still a threat, even for countries with effec- tive childhood immunization programs, because there is still no cure. As your interview with Dr. Bob Scott noted, once people contract the disease their infected secretions may infect hun- dreds more. Global immunization cam- paigns eradicated smallpox -- another viral killer for which no cure was ever found -- and these measures must be conducted vigorously for polio as well. Let’s support Rotary, health care work- ers and international aid agencies with this effort -- not to cure polio but to prevent individuals from ever catching it. Mitchell Hammond Pickering environment Midday lawn watering a waste of money To the editor: I read your recent story on water usage with interest but it would have been much more informative if you had told people to stop wasting their time and money by watering their grass during the hottest part of the day. You are damaging your grass because the water is heating up on the hot ground and not sinking into the soil! Water your grass early in the morning or late at night, not lunch time. It also annoys me when people have sprinklers going but all they are get- ting wet is the driveway, sidewalk, road and cars. Do people like wasting their money? You are paying for the water that is going straight down the drain! Colette Godfrey Bowmanville & A Metroland Media Group Ltd. But residents are reminded that the most important ingredient for any barbecue or picnic outing this summer should be food safety. According to the local health unit, food- borne illness is more common than peo- ple think. The Public Health Agency of Canada estimates 11 million to 13 mil- lion food-borne illnesses occur each year in Canada. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Many cases of what people commonly refer to as a ‘24-hour flu’ are actually the result of food poisoning. The risk of food poisoning is greater dur- ing the summer since barbecuing and pic- nicking are common hot weather activi- ties for families and friends. The first step to summer food safety is to get off to a clean start. Wash hands, utensils and sur- faces with hot, soapy water before, during and after preparing foods. Sanitize coun- tertops, cutting boards and utensils with a mild bleach and water solution and wash all produce thoroughly before preparing, eating or cooking. Another important step is ensuring frozen food is thawed properly -- in the refrigerator, by running it under cold run- ning water or in a microwave oven. Thaw- ing food on the kitchen counter at room temperature is unsafe since this practice can allow bacteria to grow. In addition, the mantra of every cook should be, ‘keep hot foods hot, minimum 60 C (140 F) and cold foods cold, at 4 C (40 F) or colder’. The risk of food poisoning also increases if meats such as hamburg- er, chicken or ribs are not properly han- dled, prepared and cooked on a barbecue. Under-cooked meat can be a breeding ground for bacteria such as E.coli and sal- monella, which creates a potential health hazard for anyone who eats the contam- inated food. To protect your family and guests use a meat thermometer to ensure the meat has reached a safe internal tem- perature – poultry: 82 C (180 F), and beef/ pork/ground meats: 71 C (160 F). Finally, the health unit urges all barbe- cue and picnic hosts to keep the two-hour rule in mind. Foods that can spoil should not be left out at room temperature for longer than two hours and leftovers must be refrigerated or frozen as quickly as pos- sible. Following these food safety tips will ensure your barbecue doesn’t turn into a memorable occasion for all the wrong reasons. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 5, 20117 AP Open 24/7 WheretheCustomerAlways Finishes First! 940 Kingston Road, Pickering •www.formulafordlincoln.com FORMULA FORD LINCOLN Yo ur Ford Savings Hotline •1.800.917.3075 All Rebates Assigned to Dealer. And, lucky for me, there are always plenty of festivals going on at this time of year, creating community spirit from city to city. One of my favourite ways to embrace sum- mer is to sway and sing in the sun at an out- door concert. If you’re looking to surround yourself with activity, architecture and amaz- ing ambiance in August, check out the Town of Whitby’s Celebration Square Performances at the Central Library, Summer in the Square hosted at Ajax Town Hall’s Heritage Square, the Clarington Arts and Music Festival at the Orono Fairgrounds, and the Summer Breeze Music Festival in downtown Port Perry. Zooming into Oshawa on Aug. 26 is AutoFest -- an event you definitely don’t want to miss. Roll on into the city over the weekend for a Show and Shine at Lakeview Park, Old Skool Reunion, truck show, trunk sale, silent auc- tion, prizes, awards and more. Whether you’re a classic car owner, or just want to check out some sweet rides, AutoFest is sure to deliver. Visit www.autofestoshawa.com. On Aug. 27 and 28, the Durham Pet Fest will bring together pet lovers from across Ontario to Cullen Central Park in Whitby. Stop by with your furry friends and family members to gain insight from pet industry professionals, and take in a parade of breeds and pet fashion show. You’ll also be supporting a good cause, because proceeds from admission will be donated to local pet-related non-profit orga- nizations. Visit www.durhampetfest.com. If you’d rather cool off by the water, the region’s largest waterfront festival will be hap- pening on Aug. 27 at the Ajax by the Lake event. Feel the breeze and experience differ- ent sites across the town’s waterfront, while also enjoying kite flying, food, refreshments and local heritage exhibitions. Visit www. townofajax.com. This Saturday, visit Fairview Lodge’s Sum- mer Festival in Whitby. This event, hosted by Region of Durham’s Social Services Depart- ment will feature fun for the whole family. For information on these (and more) fun summer festivals, check the events calendar at www.durhamtourism.ca or follow us on Twit- ter at @DurhamTourism. See you in the sun. However, as the years and the memories pile up, clutter can take over a home. When that happens, residents can feel uncomfortable and boxed in. Clut- ter has even been linked to mental health is- sues, most notably depression, as some men- tal health professionals theorize that clutter indicates a preoccupation with the past and possibly a dim view of both the present and the future. Those who don't have an issue with clutter might find it difficult to understand just how difficult it can be to address. But removing clutter is more than just boxing things up and leaving them at the curb. To clear a home of clutter, men and women should consider the following tips. * Enlist a friend to help. When people work alone to conquer clutter, the process is far more likely to draw out. That's because individuals will likely find a reason to keep everything they have, making decisions on each and every item very difficult. Enlist the help of friend who can help decide if an item should be kept. Someone who isn't attached to each knickknack and keepsake can likely offer a more objective opinion on items clut- tering up the home. * Don't kid yourself about broken items. Clutter collectors often have several items around the house that they insist they'll get around to fixing. When it comes to broken items, men and women must be honest with themselves as to the reality most items will never be fixed. If an item has spent years ly- ing around the house in need of patchwork, then it's realistic to assume it will remain broken. What's more, if a broken item like a candy dish has already been replaced by a candy dish that isn't in disrepair, it's safe to discard the broken dish. * Clean out the file cabinet. Clutter col- lectors are often renowned for keeping documents long after it's necessary to do so. Though some documents, including tax re- turns, boast longer-than-average shelf lives, it's not necessary to retain all personal and financial documents for years. The rule of thumb with respect to keeping tax returns is to hold on to them for seven years. Addition- al documents, including mortgage papers, in- vestment paperwork and other extraordinary documents, should be held on to as well. But there's no reason to hang on to documents like utility bills, phone bills and even bank state- ments for several years. Cleaning out the file cabinet could clear up a significant amount of space. When disposing of old documents, do so with a paper shredder to increase secu- rity. * Embrace recycling. One way to turn clut- ter into a positive is to embrace recycling. One of the items clutter collectors commonly accumulate is periodicals, be it newspapers or magazines. For those who live in a com- munity with curbside recycling, consult the local recycling center to determine if they collect periodicals. If not, arrange a time when these items can be dropped off at the center. Recycling old periodicals is good for the environment and can help individuals liv- ing in clutter quickly and easily clear out a significant amount of it. * Consider if there's a chance to make money. A home full of clutter isn't necessar- ily devoid of value. In fact, older items that have done little more than collect dust could actually be valuable. Another man in the apartment, Trevor Brown of Peterbor- ough, was viciously beaten and left with life-threatening injuries including a frac- tured skull. Mr. Squires fled to Alberta and was arrested in May of 2011. Original- ly charged with second-degree mur- der, attempted murder and robbery, he pleaded guilty to the reduced charges in July. Three other suspects, two men and a woman, have been identified. Two have been charged and await trial while one man remains at large. A publication ban protects their identities. According to an agreed statement of facts read into the record after his guilty plea, Mr. Squires and his co-accused tar- geted Mr. Brooks for a robbery, believing he kept money and drugs in his upper- floor apartment. Three men forced their way into the apartment before dawn, beating Mr. Brown with a metal bar when he resisted. Mr. Brooks, who was asleep in his bed- room with his girlfriend, was stabbed repeatedly as the intruders searched for drugs and cash. Police officers respond- ing to a 911 call found him bleeding pro- fusely and pleading for help, crying out that he was going to die. He was pro- nounced dead shortly after 6 a.m. after being rushed to hospital. After he was arrested, Mr. Squires told police he and his co-accused had not planned to kill anyone, but had armed themselves with knives and a metal bar to intimidate Mr. Brooks. “He also set out in detail the role played by each person involved in the home invasion,” Justice De Filippis noted. It’s expected Mr. Squires will testify against the others at trial, the judge said. “His testimony is particularly significant with respect to how Mr. Brooks died.” Mr. Squires’s cooperation with the authorities has led to fears for his safety, Justice De Filippis said. Although Mr. Squires pleaded guilty in July, details of his case have until now been covered by a sweeping publication ban. The ban was challenged by Oshawa This Week, a sister paper of the Ajax- Pickering News Advertiser. Justice De Filippis ruled Tuesday against a Crown bid to have the ban upheld, allowing coverage of Mr. Squires’s plea while prohibiting reporting on details of the co-accused. Think again. The competitive team from the Taylor Dance Centre in Ajax com- peted in 17 events and brought home 17 medals, including 10 golds. “Out of all the other groups that were there, I think we probably did the best,” says director Margie Taylor. The event wrapped up last month in Niagara Falls and attract- ed teams from five continents and roughly 30 countries, from the U.S.A. to Ukraine and from Ger- many to Ghana. The Ajax dancers got into big competition mode after dancing in the nationals finals, held just before the worlds, also in Niag- ara Falls. So when they went up against the world, were the but- terflies fluttering in their stom- achs, especially for those dancing their first solos? “Not really, because I’m used to dancing on the stage,” says Bre- anna Gunnyon, 12, of Ajax, who picked up a gold in her jazz/acro category. A dancer for five years, she likes “that I can show what I can do and have fun doing it.” Breanna dances tap, ballet, hip hop, musical theatre and contem- porary, but says jazz/acro is her favourite. Taylor explains that jazz/acro combines the energy of jazz dance with gymnastic tumbling. Sydney Sudmals of Scarborough returned from the event with three golds, one in jazz and two in tap. “It’s fun and I feel free to do whatever I want,” the nine year old says of dancing. Sydney danced two solos, a jazz and a musical theatre routine, and Taylor explains it’s the dancers themselves who make the deci- sion to dance solo, which is more complex than a group routine. Breanna says she most liked the showcase at the end of the event in which the gold and some of the silver-medal winners participat- ed. “I met a couple of people from different places around the world,” Sydney says. Along with the 10 golds, Taylor Dance Centre competitive team members brought home four sil- ver and three bronze medals. “There was nobody (on the team) that came home without medals,” Taylor says. The Taylor Dance Centre is in its fourth year in Ajax, at 145 Kingston Rd. E., Unit 2 (at Salem Road). Learn more at www.taylor- dance.ca. The talented soccer player spent his for- mative years playing for the Pickering Power Extreme program, but when thoughts of obtaining a scholarship crept to the fore- front, Thomas joined up with the Ajax FC Gunners program run by Tom Croft. While Thomas insists the change of uni- form had more to do with Croft’s history of sending players off on scholarships than anything else, regardless of his reasoning, it proved to be a smart move for the six- foot-three defender. Last February Thomas signed a scholar- ship with Syracuse University and will join the Orangemen’s men’s soccer program this coming season. “Basically we went to a few showcas- es and Syracuse watched me play. Then I went to their school, I liked it, and it was my first choice,” Thomas said of the process that led to him signing with Syracuse. “They were really nice. They treated me well and made me feel like I was on the team. I liked the facilities, it’s real grass fields and everything. And it was a good atmosphere.” Thomas, who is also part of Canada’s U18 national program -- and hopes to one day suit up for the men’s national team -- said the feeling he got after signing that letter of intent and confirming his choice to attend Syracuse is something he won’t soon for- get. “It was actually one of the biggest moments of my life when I signed. It was a great feeling,” explained Thomas, who will join forces as an Orangemen with U18 teammate and fellow defender James Mur- rell of Markham. Meanwhile, as excited as he is to be taking this next step in his soccer career, Thom- as’s new coach at Syracuse, Ian McIntyre, didn’t hold anything back when comment- ing on what Thomas’s addition to his pro- gram means. “We quickly identified Skylar as a play- er who we felt could become an integral part of our program as we moved forward,” McIntyre said in a release on the team’s website, announcing the signing of the for- mer Dunbarton athlete and 11 others. “In addition to his physical and techni- cal talents he possesses the necessary intan- gible qualities, personality and drive to be successful here at Syracuse.” Thomas, who estimates he was around the age of seven when he got his start in soccer, said he hopes to bring a lot to the pitch for Syracuse in an effort to pay back the faith they’ve shown in him with the scholarship commitment. “I like to think that I’m the kind of player that likes to win the ball and then give it off to someone to score a goal,” the defender said. “I like getting into hard tackles and I like leading my team.” While getting adjusted to the game at the NCAA level will likely take some time, so too will getting things in order away from the game. “Most of it will probably be getting my pri- orities straight,” Thomas noted. “I know school comes first, then soccer, then friends and all that. It’s going to be tough getting it in the right order and spend- ing the right amount of time on each of those.” BaSeBall durham players come up big for ontario Blue Jays MCKINNEY, TEXAS -- The Ontario Blue Jays Baseball Club, comprised of many of the top players from across the province, won its first game of the Ameri- can Amateur Baseball Congress 16 and Under Mickey Mantle World Series. The Jays beat the Indiana Pros- pects, a team that came into the game as the number-one ranked club in the United States according to the Perfect Game Scouting Service, by a 12-2 score. Keeping the Indiana offence at bay was Bowmanville’s Brodie Harkness, who threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run on three hits and a walk, while striking out six. Offensive contributions, meanwhile, came up and down the batting order, highlighted by a huge 10-run third inning that blew the game wide open in favour of the Blue Jays. Right-fielder Joey Guaragna dealt the first blow with a two- run double before centre-fielder Rayvon Barless extended the lead with a bases- clearing triple. Designated hitter Malik Collymore added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Pickering catcher Sean Ratcliffe had an RBI single. Third basemen Owen Spiwak, shortstop Daniel Pinero, first basemen Connor Stevenson and left-fielder Daniel Szpik also had RBIs en route to the win. Ontario will now play the winner of Thursday’s game between Puerto Rico and the host McKinney (Texas) Frozen Rope at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Al Alford Sta- dium in McKinney, Texas. This time around, according to a report on sportsnet.ca, the event, UFC 140, will be held at the Air Canada Cen- tre and is likely to feature fights involving at least a pair of Canadians in Mark Hom- inick and Pickering native Sean Pierson. Both were on the UFC 129 card, with Hominick going through a brutal five-round battle with Jose Aldo and Pierson losing to Jake Ellenberger, who was thrown into the fight as a last-minute replacement for the injured Brian Foster. Traditionally, teams have played mostly in tourna- ments and have had a dif- ficult time connecting with other teams to have games where the kids can play with less pressure and the coach- es can watch them play and learn how to make them a better team. But that is what the week- end of Aug. 13-14 will be all about as approximate- ly 1,200 soccer players will meet at three locations in Pickering, Kinsmen Park, Chris Graham Fields and Princess Diana Fields.
