POPPY GARDEN PLANTED AT CENOTAPH IN ESPLANADE PARK
MOYA DILLON
mdillon@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Pickering now has one more
feature with which to honour its veterans
thanks to one charitable resident.
On Sunday, July 11, residents, councillors
and City staff gathered to plant a Peace Gar-
den of poppies at the Pickering cenotaph in
Esplanade Park as part of a project proposed
by a resident who wishes to remain anony-
mous.
“A local resident came to the City about a
year ago with the idea of doing something
great for the community,” said Krystal Fer-
guson, acting co-ordinator, marketing and
revenue for the City of Pickering, noting that
the resident provided funding for the gar-
den.

PICKERING -- City Councillor David Pickles, left, and first vice-president and poppy chairman of Legion 606 Gil Barrett were among a
group of volunteers planting poppies in a Peace Garden around the cenotaph in Esplanade Park as part of Pickering’s Bicentennial cel-
ebrations July 10.

PICKERING -- Durham Police are search-
ing for three male suspects after a Pickering
convenience store was robbed.
On Tuesday, July 12 just before mid-
night officers were called to a Mac’s Milk
convenience store at Dixie Road
and Finch Avenue
after a robbery was
reported.
According to
police, three
masked men
entered the
store and
ordered the
lone clerk
into a back
room. One
of the men
demanded the
clerk’s electron-
ic items. The sus-
pects also stole cigarettes and lottery
tickets from behind the counter before
fleeing the area. Two of the suspects were
reportedly on foot, while the third rode a
bicycle southbound on Dixie Road.
The victim was not physically injured.
Two of the suspects are described
as black males, about six feet tall, 175
pounds with medium builds and wear-
ing black shirts, pants and masks cover-
ing their faces.
The third suspect is described as a male
with light brown skin, about five feet six
inches, 160 pounds with a slim build. He
was wearing black pants and a mask cov-
ering his face.

Keith GilliGan
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- The hot, dry weath-
er may be welcome, but it’s put-
ting a strain on the water supply.
“We’re starting to experience
difficulties in our reservoirs to
meet demand,” says Greg Lymer,
manager of technical support for
Durham Region.
No reservoir has gone dry, but
Regional officials are asking resi-
dents to cut down on any unnec-
essary water use, such as car or
driveway washing.
The Region has a bylaw that
restricts lawn watering to the
‘odd-even’ system. Anyone with
an odd-numbered address would
water their lawn on an odd-num-
bered calendar day, while an
even-numbered address would
be watered on an even-num-
bered calendar day. The bylaw is
in place from May to September
and is mandatory.
“It’s in place every summer,
especially in times of a hot, dry
period,” Mr. Lymer states.
“The forecast looks hot and dry
going forward,” he says, adding
the lack of rain has also been a
factor affecting supply levels.
The Region is hoping to avoid
having to restrict all outside water
use, he says. “Right now, it’s odd-
even usage.”
Even though most of the region
borders Lake Ontario, Mr. Lymer
says it’s possible for Durham to
experience a water shortage. The
water still needs to be treated and
then pumped to reservoirs, he
adds.
“We have to meet ministry
guidelines. We only have a cer-
tain amount of capacity,” Mr.
Lymer notes.
“If the current hot weather and
water use trends continue, we
may have to consider mandatory
water restrictions,” he adds.
Homeowners can also conserve
water by only watering grass
when necessary. A healthy lawn
requires 2.5 centimetres (one
inch) of water per week, includ-
ing rainfall. Free rain gauges are
available through the Region to
help you measure how much
water your lawn receives, and to
avoid over-watering.
For more water conservation
tips and information on where
you can get your free rain gauge,
visit www.durham.ca/water-
conservation, or call the Region
of Durham’s Technical Support
Division at 905-668-7711 (toll-
free 1-800-372-1102).

“That turned into the idea of planting
poppies around the cenotaph and the
City loved the idea. The poppies are
being planted today and with the
proper maintenance they should
be ready to bloom for the
Legion’s D-Day ceremony
next year, and every year
after that.”
Ms. Ferguson said there
are plans to install an
obelisk at the site identi-
fying the planting as a Peace
Garden, although at this point
it’s not known when that part of the
project will be completed.
Gil Barrett, first vice-president and
poppy chairman for Pickering Legion
606, was on hand to help with the plant-
ing.
“I think it’s wonderful,” he said of the
project.
“It’s another simple
reminder to everyone that
freedom isn’t free. I think
the City and the citizens
of Pickering need to be
commended for what
they’ve done and for all
the support they’ve pro-
vided to veterans in the
past and ongoing.”
Councillor David Pick-
les noted that the garden was
a nice addition and would complement
further planned improvements to the
cenotaph area.
“I think this is a really nice addition
with the work we’ve previously done in
improving the cenotaph area and the
work we’re about to do,” he said, explain-
ing that council is currently review-
ing tenders to have interlocking brick
around the cenotaph replaced.
“It’s kind of a little wobbly and uneven
right now, which makes it difficult for
people putting out wreaths, so it’s all
going to be taken out and redone. I think
the park is really coming along nicely;
there’s a real theme to honouring our
veterans and the Peace Garden just adds
to that.”

Gaps along Kingston
Road to be addressed
Moya Dillon
mdillon@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Residents will no longer
have to risk their safety when walking
along sections of Kingston Road after
council approved the installation of tem-
porary sidewalks.
On Monday, July 11, councillors
approved a tender to install asphalt pav-
ing along the south side of Kingston
Road between Walnut Lane and Glen-
dale Drive in order to address accessibil-
ity and mobility needs. The move is part
of an ongoing process to fix several side-
walk gaps along Kingston Road that have
forced residents to walk along the gravel
shoulder of the busy thoroughfare.
“I’m pleased we’ve got something com-
ing forward here since council for many
years has talked about gradually putting
those sidewalks into place,” said Coun-
cillor Doug Dickerson.
“This sidewalk is another aspect of
putting in those pieces of the puzzle. As
the sidewalk proceeds westward my sus-
picion is we’re going to have to tunnel
under the railroad tracks and knowing
the length of that process is that some-
thing we are undertaking?”
Pickering CAO Tony Prevedel said the
installation of sidewalks would be an
ongoing process and tunnelling under
the track would likely be looked at in the
future.
“We have the entire length of side-
walk missing links along Kingston Road
that myself and staff are reviewing,” he
explained.
“You’re abso-
lutely right, further
to the west in order
to get the sidewalk in
it’s going to require
a pedestrian tunnel,
which will probably
be a very expensive
section of sidewalk.
At this point we have
put $250,000 in the
2011 budget to start
the process of fixing
these links because
as the Region moves
forward with planned urbanization they
will be putting in concrete walks along
those areas. So at this time we are not
actively pursuing a tunnel.”
Several councillors praised the project,
noting that completed sidewalks have
been an ongoing goal of council for sev-
eral years.
“I have supported this vision to com-
plete sidewalks on both sides of Kings-
ton Road and this certainly fills a big
hole,” said Councillor David Pickles.
“This has been a priority for many years
and it’s very nice to see this being done.
This project is a big step to reaching our
goal and will be well used by pedestri-
ans, bikes and strollers.”
The new sidewalk will be a tempo-
rary asphalt path that will eventually be
replaced with proper concrete sidewalks
once development in the area moves
forward. The project will cost $115,135.

Is Google+, the mega company’s new
social network, about to hit 10 million
users?
That’s the estimate from ancestry.com
CEO Paul Allen, who sampled surnames
from census bureau data and compared it to
surnames on Google+ to estimate the per-
centage of the U.S. population on Google+,
mashable.com reports.
Google, for now, is keeping mum on how
many users it has.
But even if he’s a couple of million off,
that’s still an impressive figure given that
Google+ made its debut on June 28 and is
still invitation-only.
I became a plus one this week after a friend
sent me an invite and I promptly started
playing with it with the help of a couple of
my friends.
So why try Google+? First of all it’s got a
couple of features that Facebook doesn’t
that really come in handy. The main one
is the circles feature. Instead of lumping all
your friends into one giant group, you can
create separate circles. So you could have
circles for friends, family and acquaintanc-
es for folks you don’t know so well and any
other grouping you might come up with.
The benefit is when you’re posting con-
tent you can choose which circle sees it.
That means grandma and your boss won’t
see your antics at your best friend’s bache-
lorette party.
There’s a nifty Hangout feature which
allows a video conference with up to 10
people. I haven’t had a chance to try it out
yet, but I imagine it will be spectacularly
popular. This feature is likely why Facebook
is working on integrating Skype.
Messing around on Google+ with friends, I
didn’t immediately fall in love, but I thought
it was kinda neat.
My friend Nikki’s first reaction was “but all
my pictures and junk are on Facebook”.
That’s a clear barrier since many of us
invested so much time uploading content
on Facebook over the years. But at the same
time, many of us have a bit of a love-hate
relationship with the site, so Google+ pres-
ents a chance to start again. It’s particularly
appealing to current Gmail users since they
visit Google regularly anyway.
Nikki is a communications pro and she
also raised a good point when she men-
tioned that many businesses just recently
embraced Facebook and getting them up
to speed on Google+ as well is going to be a
challenge.
My other friend Laura said she never fig-
ured out Google Buzz so she was “unlikely
to figure this thing out”. Buzz, of course had
a spectacularly controversial debut due to
privacy issues, and most folks kept their
social networking on Facebook.
Definitely there’s a bit of a learning curve,
so that makes it a bit of an inconvenience
to switch from Facebook and keeping up
with both social networking sites might be
a chore.
Overall the interface looks fine, but it’s
nothing spectacular. But then neither is
Facebook. Another downside is that while
Android users can download an app for
Google+, it’s not yet available in the app
store for iPhone. Given all that, I’m going to
have to play with Google+ a bit more before
deciding whether it has the potential to be a
Facebook killer or just another in a long line
of not-quite-successful Google social net-
working tools.

Big shoes to fill for
new UOIT president
One could forgive new University of
Ontario Institute of Technology President
Dr. Tim McTiernan if he seems a little
awestruck about his new job.
Dr. McTiernan, a former president and
CEO of Canada College of Applied Arts
and Technology in North Bay, knows well
the transformational impact UOIT has
had on Oshawa and the larger region,
along with the success the university has
enjoyed under the leadership of first pres-
ident Gary Polonsky and outgoing presi-
dent Ron Bordessa.
But he has built an impressive resume
himself in post-secondary academia and
much experience in identifying and capi-
talizing on the efficiencies and common
ground that can be found between colleg-
es and universities in close proximity, as is
the case here in Durham.
And, not surprisingly, he seems to have
done his homework. He acknowledged
this week the contribution that UOIT con-
tinues to make towards urban renewal as
its presence grows in downtown Oshawa;
he vowed to uphold the commitment to
student success and academic relevance
the university holds dear; and hopes to
further position UOIT as an institution
known for its research, analytics and prob-
lem solving culture that will serve busi-
nesses and organizations the world over.
That’s an ambitious goal, certainly, but
one that fits well given the achievements
the school has already realized under pre-
vious presidents: innovative and relevant
programs, economic renewal in down-
town Oshawa and stunning enrolment
growth, among others.
Dr. McTiernan brings new energy and
his own varied experience to the post, but
will reinforce the learning and innovation
culture that currently exists at UOIT, with
a view to expanding the partnerships that
existing locally, nationally and globally.
Taking a long-term view, the work being
done today -- to build, expand, and deep-
en ties -- will serve Oshawa, Durham, its
municipalities and its citizens for many
years to come.
Students today -- whether entering
junior kindergarten or Grade 12 come
September -- can work towards and earn a
university degree, develop vital skills that
might serve, for example, the automotive
or nuclear power industries, and build
lives in the communities in which they
grew up, from Pickering to Newcastle and
beyond.
There’s a new president in town who has
a clear sense of what UOIT can offer, and
what it might grow to be.
Perhaps one day he’ll hand a diploma to
you, or your child. Right here at home.

Tiny, rare and beautiful. But-
terflies come in a vast variety of
colours and sizes. The scale-winged
beauty I was looking at in an over-
grown field in Haliburton Coun-
ty was among the smallest I’d ever
seen since I started taking part in
Ontario butterfly counts more than
a decade ago.
Its centimetre-wide wings were
an odd greenish colour. What
immediately caught my notice
were the red-orange markings on
its outerwings. Several members
of the hairstreak family, my favou-
rite butterflies, have orange patch-
es decorating the bottom corner of
their hindwing. This one had a fine
red-orange border at top and sides,
plus a few orange tracings down the
middle. When it briefly opened its
wings I was amazed to find the dark
upper side glinting metallic blue,
like a tiny stunning morpho. And
it had a hairstreak’s elegant black-
and-white-striped legs and anten-
nae.
Stymied, I stared at it. I’d never
seen this butterfly before -- even in
pictures. It was one for the experts.
I caught it in my net, carefully trans-
ferred it to a clear plastic pill canis-
ter and tucked it in my pocket. After
showing it to my husband -- he’d
never seen it before, either -- I put
it in the cooler to keep it calm and
still. And started flipping through
our butterfly books, trying to iden-
tify it. The only butterfly shown with
similar orange markings was so
rare that finding one would be as
good as winning the lottery. Nah, I
thought. Impossible.
At the count tally in Minden at
the end of the day we set the lit-
tle stranger in front of Ed Poropat,
compiler and local expert.
He peered at it, then glanced up
in disbelief. “Is this what I think it
is?” he asked, and ran outside with
the pill case to view the butterfly in
bright light. He was followed by a
stream of count participants, none
of whom had seen this species
before.
It was, indeed, an early hairstreak,
found so rarely in Canada that a
friend declared he’d never expected
to see one in his lifetime.
“Few North American butterflies
have attracted as much attention
as this rare species, whose habits
are shrouded in mystery,” wrote the
authors of the National Audubon
Society’s Field Guide to Butterflies.
Apparently early hairstreaks
live high in the canopy of mature
beech-maple forests, with females
descending to the ground only rare-
ly to sip moisture from paths.
There were no beech trees of any
size where I found this tiny celeb-
rity. Experts speculate some may
feed on beaked hazel, an understo-
ry shrub that produces nuts similar
to those of beech.
First thing the next morning, we
went back to the spot, documented
the historic find with photographs,
took a GPS reading, and reverently
released the still-perky little but-
terfly. It climbed up on my thumb,
paused, and fluttered off into the
sunshine.

Protect your pond fish
from blue herons,
raccoons
DUrHaM -- Jack Gusso had
his goldfish for two and a half
years before an unwanted visitor swooped
in and snatched them up.
“It ate every single one of them,” Mr. Gusso
says of the blue heron that obliterated his
pond full of fish in one day.
But a call to PJ’s Pet Centre and a quick
Google search revealed he’s not alone.
“Herons are a bit of a pest,” says Ryan Roz-
inskis, PJ’s pet care associate.
Hartz, pet product manufacturers, says
on its website, hartz.com, the first thing you
have to do is get to know your predator. The
blue heron, it says, is perhaps the most ruth-
less and efficient of backyard predators. It
is especially attracted to brightly coloured
fish, which are easier to hunt -- bad news for
goldfish with their bright orange colouring.
Other predatory birds include cranes, egrets
and kingfishers.
Mr. Rozinskis says he keeps a cover over his
pond. He supports it with rocks so the rac-
coons, other backyard predators, don’t make
it sink to the bottom if they stand on it.
“I keep it on all the time and I have my
plants grow through it,” he says.
Pond covers usually consist of netting,
which can be made from various materials.
It’s also a good idea to have a deep pond
with a steep drop-off.
“With raccoons especially, if you give
them a ledge to
get in and swim,
they’ll go in,” Mr. Roz-
inskis says. “If you have
a steep drop-off they won’t
be able to go in and swim
around.”
Hartz says if a pond is at least three feet
deep, herons won’t be able to wade and fish
can swim deep to avoid them.
The rocks, coupled with the depth, also
give the fish more places to
hide.
Kristen’s Kritters’ Face-
book page visitors also sug-
gest owl statues, and one even says people
near her cottage use a plastic coyote to keep
the herons, geese and ducks off the beach
area. Mr. Rozinskis had similar advice.
“Some people have had success with
decoys, like a heron,” he says.
Although he says it’s not a guarantee, he
finds a trusty old dog can help.
“Usually if there’s a dog around you won’t
see a heron,” he says.
Other decoys that could scare away pred-
ators are snakes and alligators, says Hartz.
For the best results, you should try to
move the decoys around as much as pos-
sible. Some predators are very intelligent
and will figure out a fake.
There are also a variety of fish
poacher alarms on the market, most
of them triggered by motion sen-
sors. They’re effective in warding
off predators and do so in a variety of
ways, from loud music to bright lights to
jets of water. But these devices can’t tell the
difference between a predator approaching
the pond and you and can be very annoying,
according to Hartz.

chin named to
canadian team for
Panamerican Junior
championships
PICKERING -- Rayann Chin has
been included among an elite group
that will be heading to Florida to repre-
sent Canada in the discus.
The Pickering resident was one
of 55 junior aged athletes (16-19 year
olds) that will travel to Miramar, Flori-
da to compete at the 2011 Panameri-
can Junior Championships from July
22-24. Chin, 18, will compete in the
discus.
The Dunbarton student has had
an outstanding season so far. At the
OFSAA provincial championships in
Sudbury, she won gold in shot put with
a mark of 12.87m, and duplicated the
first place finish in the discus with a
toss of 47.06m.
At the Canadian Junior Champion-
ships in Winnipeg, she collected gold
in the discuss (46.30m) and bronze in
the shot put (12.62m).
She is a member of the University
of Toronto Track Club and is coached
by Adrian Roberts.
At the last edition of the Pana-
merican championships in 2009, the
Canadian squad finished fifth overall
as a team with a haul of 13 medals,
including three gold, three silver and
seven bronze.

kostka signs with
Florida Panthers
FLORIDA -- Mike Kostka will con-
tinue to chase his dream of reaching
the National Hockey League.
The Oshawa resident and former
Ajax-Pickering Raiders’ product has
signed a one-year two-way contract
with the Florida Panthers.
Kostka’s deal was originally
announced by the team on the eve of
NHL free agency.
The six-foot-one 200-pound
defenceman had 55 points in 80
games to lead the Rochester Ameri-
cans of the American Hockey League
in scoring last season. It was the first
time in the 55-year history of the fran-
chise that a defenceman has held that
honour.
He also led the AHL in power play
goals for a defenceman with 11.
In signing with the Panthers, the
former UMass-Amherst graduate
achieves a level of familiarity as his
former coach with the AHL’s Portland
Pirates, Kevin Dineen, was recently
named head coach of the Panthers.

AJAX -- Even before he suits up for a game
with the James Madison Dukes soccer pro-
gram, Boyd Reid gave every indication that he
has a team-first attitude.
Pursued by several NCAA schools for his
play on the pitch, the Ajax resident is equally
as skilled in the classroom. An honours’ stu-
dent throughout his time at Pickering High
School, Reid finished with an 82-per-cent
average when combining all his classes from
Grades 9 through 12. Those marks led to his
nomination and membership into the Nation-
al Society of High School Scholars, receiving
an academic scholarship into the Centennial
Scholars’ Program at James Madison.
So, instead of using athletic money, he took
academic money to study international busi-
ness, hoping in the long run it works out best
for the team.
Smart move.
“Now the athletic money will stay in the
school and instead of using it on me, they can
go out and get another player,” he says of his
reasoning.
For the academic side of it, the school
took into consideration his community ser-
vice, academics and letters of reference from
coaches. Committing to James Madison, a
Division I school in Harrisonburg, Virginia,
came as a bit of a surprise considering the
number of programs in both the United States
and Canada that wanted to make him a part
of their program.
“It kind of surprised me actually,” says Reid
of how things unfolded. “I was looking at a
couple other schools, trying to make a deci-
sion and all of a sudden I got an e-mail from
James Madison.
“I looked at the school and it looked remark-
able. It’s a pretty big school but it’s not really
big, so it’s not overwhelming.”
The academic side has always been a priori-
ty for Reid, something he worked hard at from
an early age.
“My parents have always stressed the
importance of education. From an early age
I’ve always taken some good, solid time for
my homework and afterward I can do what-
ever.”
On the field, he was MVP and captain of the
school soccer team last season. His summer
team, the Ajax Gunners, is one of the most
respected programs in the province. The team
has competed in England and Scotland, win-
ning the Edinburgh Cup, as well as competing
at a number of showcase tournaments in the
United States. Championships have come in
New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana and Disney World,
as well as being finalists in Dallas.
A little closer to home, they have won the
provincial championships and were bronze
medallists at the Ontario Summer Games and
BMO National Championships.
“Definitely my dream is to play profes-
sionally,” says Reid with an eye to the future.
“Going overseas would be amazing, getting a
good contract and having a good, solid living
overseas would be a dream come true.
“Playing in the MLS, if I had the opportuni-
ty, I would definitely go.”
He will report to James Madison Aug. 10,
with an exhibition game against George
Washington on Aug. 18. Last season the
Dukes had a 4-6-1 record in the Colonial Ath-
letic Association.

AJAX -- Boyd Reid is an honours student from Pickering High School who received an aca-
demic scholarship from James Madison University in Virginia, where he is also going to play
on the school’s soccer team.
Dragon Boat team
moving up the
high school ranks
PICKERING -- After years of pad-
dling for their high school and
internationally, Pine Ridge High
School alumni Jordon Moss, Josh
Brown, Katie McCarty and Alex
Henning returned to their roots.
The group paddled under the
tutelage of long-serving coach
Dan Evelyn, who stepped aside in
2008 to concentrate on his busi-
ness. Along they way they have
represented Canada at world
championships in Berlin, Germa-
ny, Hong Kong, China, Sydney,
Austria and Toronto.
Since 2008 this new genera-
tion of coaches has taken over the
Pine Ridge dragon boat program
and is giving back to the com-
munity by coaching and teaching
the sport of dragon boat. It is the
direct result of the athletes pas-
sion and dedication for the sport
of dragon noating that has made
the Ridge Racing team a serious
contender on the high school
dragon boat circuit.
Moss, the head coach, pushed
his 2011 team of paddlers to new
heights and almost caught their
arch rivals, the highly ranked
Mowat Mustangs, in recent regat-
tas. His team is comprised of a
number of experienced paddlers
but most are new to the sport.
According to Moss, he was very
proud of his fellow coaches and
dedicated paddlers as the team
practised three times a week at
the Pickering Rouge Canoe Club
in Frenchman’s Bay at the end of
West Shore Drive.
The Ridge Racing dragon boat
team entered two regattas for the
2011 season. At the first regat-
ta, it finished an impressive sec-
ond overall at the Ontario high
school championships held on
Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering.
The highlight of the year came at
the Toronto International Drag-
on Boat Racing Festival on Cen-
tre Island in Toronto. Pine Ridge
went into the championship race
ranked second behind arch rivals
Mowat Mustangs, with an aver-
age time of 2:10.58. The champi-
onship race was very close and
Ridge Racing paddled to its best
time of the season with a very
impressive 2:08.45. However, the
team finished third in a very tight
race in junior mixed division.
According to Moss, “The future
looks bright for Ridge Racing with
solid coaching and some very
good athletes who were willing
to listen and work hard. The Pine
Ridge dragon boat program has
been put back on the map this
year and the future is very bright
for this program going forward.
“Our goal next year is to have
two boats entered in the regattas
and to catch our rivals.”
Ridge Racing runs its program
through the Pickering Rouge
Canoe Club, which also runs
activities and programs (both
competitive and recreational)
throughout the summer season.
They also run summer camps for
junior campers.

Cassels signs with Generals
First-round pick to
make oHl debut
in September
OSHAWA -- Cole Cassels has
signed on the dotted line and will
make his Ontario Hockey League
debut with the Oshawa Generals
in September.
Cassels, the team’s first pick,
16th overall, in the May OHL
draft, signed a standard OHL
agreement with the club Tues-
day.
A 16-year-old Ohio native and
son of longtime NHL player,
Andrew Cassels, he had also been
drafted by Muskegon in the USHL
futures draft and could likely have
entertained NCAA scholarship
offers.
“Obviously Cole had some dif-
ferent options for the next step
in his hockey career and we are
thrilled that he chose Oshawa for
his hockey and education devel-
opment,” said Chris DePiero,
head coach and general manag-
er of the team, in a press release.
“We look forward to helping his
development and watching his
growth both on and off the ice
over the next few years.”
In 48 games with the Ohio Blue
Jackets U16 team last season, Cas-
sels scored 22 goals while adding
44 assists for 66 points. The five-
foot-11 forward also played with
the TPH Thunder at the 2011 OHL
Cup, where he scored two goals
and had an assist in four games.
The Generals will be celebrat-
ing their 75th anniversary year
this season.
