Ms. Willert, 49, was admitted to the hospi- tal on Wednesday, May 31 for a hysterectomy, and was subsequently scheduled for discharge at 10 a.m. the next day. When she got up to leave, Ms. Willert said she was overcome with nausea and dizziness and felt faint. “I gather I was still suffering the effects of the anesthesia,” she explained. “I told the nurse but she insisted I was fine to go. During my stay most of the nurses were good, but when it came time for discharge it kind of just felt like ‘get out.’ We just couldn’t believe it.” Are patient values a priority? At Pickering’s executive committee meet- ing on June 13, councillors received a report detailing solutions to address residents’ con- cerns with the area around the Liverpool Road school, which include pedestrian safe- ty, bus operations and traffic flow. Staff identified several traffic issues in the area of Holy Redeemer, including an inad- equate bus unloading zone in front of the school, motorists stopping on Liverpool Road to drop off students and obstructing incoming buses, and the close proximity of the school crosswalk to the building’s drive- way, which is causing problems for pedestri- ans and school crossing guards. “We determined a lot of points of con- flict between pedestrians, school crossing guards, school buses and cars in front of the school,” said Richard Holborn, head of Pick- ering’s engineering services division. “What happens is a lot of cars come to drop off or pick up students and they’re all jockey- ing for position. That makes it very problem- atic for school buses, which sometimes have to double park to drop off students, which blocks traffic flow.” To address the issues the City is looking to install signs that would designate both sides of Liverpool Road as no-stopping areas in front of the school, create an extended and marked school bus unloading zone in front of the school on the east side of Liverpool Road, and move the crosswalk from its cur- rent position in front of the school to the north intersection of Liverpool and Ilona Park Road. “We just want to get it away from where all the buses are to make it safer for children crossing,” Mr. Holborn said of the crosswalk. “We’re just hoping these changes will cre- ate improvements and make things safer for pedestrians, motorists, buses and everyone using that road.” Councillors voted to recommend the work and a final vote on the plan will be held at the upcoming regular council meeting on Mon- day, June 20. Should the changes be approved, Mr. Hol- born said staff will leave the roadways as is for the duration of the current school year to avoid confusion and will instead make the improvements in July and August. city Traffic concerns at Pickering school get solution We’re just hoping these changes will create improvements and make things safer for pedestrians, motorists, buses and everyone using the road. The Education Quality and Accountabil- ity Office released the 2011 Ontario Sec- ondary School Literacy Test results on June 15. The school-by-school results revealed the Durham District School Board had 83 per cent of its first-time eligible, fully-par- ticipating students successfully complete the test, slightly down from 84 per cent in April 2010. The Durham Catholic District School Board also saw 83 per cent succeed, compared to 84 per cent in April 2009. These numbers are consistent with the overall numbers across the province. The one-day test assesses whether Grade 10 students have the reading and writ- ing skills they should have acquired by the end of Grade 9. The test is one of the 32 requirements for a student to graduate high school. Of the public schools, Cartwright High School in Blackstock topped the list, with 96 per cent of its participating students passing the test. That’s down from the 100 per cent students achieved in 2010 and 2009. Second on the list was Port Perry High School with 88 per cent, tying with Sinclair Secondary School, which saw the same number. Last year, Port Perry achieved 90 per cent, and Sinclair achieved 89. “I think in terms of the work that’s being done system-wide, everyone is staying the course,” said Luigia Ayotte, a Durham Dis- trict School Board superintendent. Finishing the lowest in the public board was G.L. Roberts Collegiate, where 63 per cent of the students who took the test were successful. That’s down from 75 per cent in 2010. Ms. Ayotte didn’t want to compare the schools since each one is unique and has different demographics. But she said the literacy test results offer valuable informa- tion to help accommodate the students’ needs. “EQAO is one measure which gives us a lot of very good detailed information to provide programs to meet school needs,” she said, adding this is coupled with other data used across the board. Of the Catholic board, All Saints Catholic Secondary School topped the list with 89 per cent successfully completing the test. Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School got 87 per cent. “Overall, our high schools are perform- ing on par with the OSSLT provincial EQAO results, a pattern that has been con- sistent for several years,” Brian O’Sullivan, a Catholic board superintendent said in an e-mail. He added each school, and the board col- lectively, will look at the trends in the test data to identify the strategies that could help further improve results among Dur- ham Catholic schools in the future. The lowest was Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary, which dropped from 75 per cent in 2010 to 69 per cent according to the 2011 results. Results can be found on equa.com. The students who took the test will receive their individual results the week of June 20. Constable Jamie Broadstock, described by the service as a veteran officer, was freed on $5,000 bail following a hearing in Oshawa court Wednesday, court records indicate. He’s due back in court in mid- July. A publication ban covers evi- dence presented during the bail hearing. According to court documents, Const. Broadstock, 35, is charged with trafficking and possession of the painkill- er oxycodone for the purpose of trafficking. It’s alleged the offences occurred between January and May of this year in Scugog Township. Const. Broadstock was charged by Durham’s profes- sional standards unit after an investigation into allegations of drug trafficking, police said. At the time of his arrest Const. Broadstock was assigned to gen- eral patrol duties in Oshawa. Ajax fire crews were called out on May 30 at 3:50 a.m., said deputy chief Michael Gamba. “When we arrived there was light smoke observed in the store,” he said. “Crews found a small fire in the receiving area at the rear of the store.” The sprinkler system had been activated and fire- fighters used a fire hose to extinguish the remaining fire. Mr. Gamba estimates damage was about $30,000, not including the damage to the store inventory. The investigation into the fire has been closed with the cause listed as undetermined. The store is currently closed for renovations. I hit the road so hard the pain in my arm prevented me from getting up. Two men put me in a van and the driv- er took me to the emergency at the Ajax hospital. The shoulder bone in my arm had come right out of the socket and the pain was worse than anything I can ever remember. I would like to thank the wonderful man who took me to the hospital. He was cer- tainly my angel that morning. Donna Benham Ajax Lost heaLth data Law firm will get rich from lawsuit, not class-action members To the editor: I read the letter in the June 9, 2011 edi- tion declaring the lawsuit to not be frivo- lous, and cringed. This is not a Walkerton situation by any stretch of the imagination when the class action against different lev- els of government was justified. The crux of the matter for the people who remain in the class action is to prove damages resulting from the loss of the key. Information on my wife and me was con- tained on that key. Yes, we were angry to learn of the loss of the key with our infor- mation. However, we suffered no damages. I am confident that all, or at worst most, of the 80,000-plus people are in the same sit- uation. Forcing people to opt out of the class action, rather than having to elect to join it, is simply wrong. Unfortunately, it is likely the vast majority of the recipients of the administrator’s letter will likely not take the time to read the letter, let alone respond and opt out. Let’s assume a con- servative figure of 60,000 for the remaining members. Let’s, also, assume for the sake of argu- ment that there is a settlement of $6 million -- an exorbitant and unsupportable figure. The law firm takes 25 per cent or $1.5 mil- lion off the top, leaving $4.5 million to be distributed among the class members. Using the 60,000 figure above, that means a grand average payout of $75 to the individ- ual members. So it is clear who the winner is here. Perhaps, your paper should under- take investigative journalism to show this is not an unusual scenario in a class action. The federal finance minister, a MPP and a wannabe MPP are partners in the law firm driving this suit, all Conservative Party members. Will they now seek a representa- tive claimant to commence a class action lawsuit against the Conservative Party for the hacking of unencrypted personal data from their records? Derek Hartley Pickering durham Pride Congratulations on an amazing event To the editor: As a straight female, I participated in this year’s Pride parade not only in support of my family and friends in the LGBT com- munity but in support of the type of com- munity I want to live in. At the end of the parade, one friend drove home the importance of this weekend’s event. He turned to me and exclaimed: “This is the first time I have ever walked downtown and felt completely accepted in my community.” This is what Pride is all about. LGBT members in our community are our fam- ily, friends and neighbours. They are busi- ness owners, workers, volunteers and rate- payers. They contribute to our society just like anyone else and have suffered through extreme prejudice over the past many decades. Every year in our community and around the globe, LGBT individuals take their lives as a result of this prejudice. We need to stand together as a commu- nity, offer our acceptance and celebrate our diversity. We need to stand up against prejudice, ignorance and bigotry because doing so makes our community strong. We can prove as this year’s slogan said, “Together it does get better.” Congratulations to the organizers, par- ticipants, sponsors and supporters for an amazing event. The provincial Education Quality and Accountability Office released its annual Ontario Secondary School Lit- eracy Test results Wednesday, which shows a slight decline in literacy scores here at home in Durham. The results here more or less match the overall scores recorded from across the province. The mandatory test for Grade 10 students in Ontario determines whether students have acquired the Ministry of Education’s expected literacy skills and a passing grade is required in order for students to graduate high school. In Durham, the public school board saw 83 per cent of students pass the test in the first attempt, down one point from 2010. The Catholic board test scores were identical in both years. Not surprisingly, some schools fared bet- ter than others in the test, a reflection of the myriad external social and economic fac- tors that distinguish various communities across the region. One high school in north Durham, for example, saw 96 per cent of its students pass the test (down from 100 per cent in 2010), while another in the south saw only 69 per cent students passing the test who took it for the first time (down from 75 per cent). But rather than bring focus to the reduction in passed tests recorded this time around, the last two year’s scores indicate a consis- tency in the overall approach to teaching literacy to Durham Region students in both publicly funded school boards. Still, Cath- olic and public school board officials will continue to assess the score data, determine trends and develop methods to improve results in the years ahead. Literacy is the foundation upon which much of the success we enjoy -- in school, in our communities, in our workplaces -- is built. Both school boards in Durham con- tinue to work diligently to continue prepar- ing students for these and other mandatory tests, and therefore prepare them for post- secondary studies and adulthood. Indeed, the 2011 test scores indicate a slight reduction in the measure of success, but it is a call to respond and improve rather than an indictment of the quality of teaching in Durham Region high schools. Students should continue to improve with the help of their teachers, the support of their peers and parents, and by consistently believing in themselves. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • June 17, 20117 AP RENTALS • SALES • SERVICE 2000 Champlain Avenue., Whitby 905-579-7593 • 905-683-CAMP (2267) www.owascorv.com VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR MORE GREAT DEALS *Call for details. Ms. Willert watched as the nurse tested her pulse, which was recorded at a rate of 53, which she calls “well below” her normal rate of 70. Despite the symptoms and her own protests, she was assured she was OK to go home. “It just didn’t make sense to me for them to be so rushed,” she said, noting that the symptoms subsided within sev- eral hours of returning home. “It was really just the lack of acknowl- edgement of what I said and the symp- toms they had in front of them. I’m not sure what else I could do as a patient, because I did complain, and my hus- band complained.” Unable to walk, Ms. Willert requested a wheelchair with footrests but was told none was available. Her husband, who is disabled, could offer little help. Luckily, the couple’s minister had come by and offered to help Ms. Willert to the car and assist her home in case she passed out. When it comes to situations like Ms. Willert’s, David Brazeau, director of pub- lic affairs and community relations at the hospital, admits there may be room for improvement. “We are by no means perfect,” he said. “We welcome critiques and criti- cisms when something doesn’t go right because that’s a real learning experience for the hospital. We do have a complaints process and it’s something we’re very open to, we want to take every moment as a learning opportunity for staff to get better.” The hospital is currently in the pro- cess of implementing a new Patient Dec- laration of Values as part of an ongoing commitment to improving patient care. Mandated by the Province through the new Excellent Care for All Act, the docu- ment details what patients expect from their community hospital and was cre- ated through public consultation with doctors, hospital staff, patients and fam- ilies. “For the most part these are practical things that people told us they would expect from their hospital,” Mr. Brazeau said. “We want patients to have a voice and exercise it. We want them to be informed and also to provide us with the most up- to-date information on their medical condition. “Patients and families informed us that one key thing they were looking for was respect from doctors and staff and to be treated fairly.” The declaration contains about 20 items categorized under the headings of voice, quality and respect and includes values such as “I will feel welcome in my hospital,” “I will be kept informed and involved in my care,” “I will be cared for as quickly as possible,” and more. It is currently being implemented through education and training sessions with staff, including a Passport to Safety program that highlights the document. “It’s all about encouraging the highest level of safety for patients and staff,” Mr. Brazeau said. “We want to get staff familiar with it so all the different values listed become part of their day-to-day routine.” Although Ms. Willert admits she would have liked to have been treated better during her last stay at the hospital, she said it wouldn’t impact her future use of the facility. “It was one bad experience, but there’s a lot of good stuff there too. I just hope this wasn’t symptomatic of a wider prob- lem with their approach. I think there’s always room for improvement, but this wouldn’t’ stop me from going back.” To view the Patient Declaration of Values: visit rougevalley.ca rouge Valley ajax-Pickering Hospital committed to improving care: spokesman For the most part these are practical things that people told us they would expect from their hospital. Because of this, we are able to enjoy the countless outdoor activities offered by each sea- son. While the days of pond hock- ey and cross-country skiing are behind us for this year, a group of yoga businesses in Durham Region is organizing a special welcome for the summer sea- son, set to take place on the Lake Scugog waterfront in downtown Port Perry. Summer solstice, which falls this year on Tuesday, June 21, is the longest day of the year and the official first day of summer. From 6 to 9 p.m. in Palmer Park, enjoy a celebration of the sum- mer solstice, which will include a drum circle, a 90-minute yoga session, a sampling of summer harvest by Durham Farm Fresh (it’s strawberry season), and prizes from Durham Tourism. Everyone is welcome to this free event, young and old, beginner and seasoned yogis. If you’ve never tried yoga before, Summer Solstice is a great way to give it a shot, for free, while experiencing the beauty of the scenic Lake Scugog waterfront. You will find that it will teach you to appreciate nature, stay fit, reduce stress and meet new friends. While you’re in Port Perry, I encourage you to explore the vibrant downtown core. One- of-a-kind shops offering locally- made items are great for when you’re searching for that perfect gift. Unique coffee shops and res- taurant patios await you when you’re ready to unwind. Harp and Wylie’s restaurant has a beautiful patio overlooking Lake Scugog, and chef Brent Harper always knows how to tickle the tastebuds with his delicious meals -- often using locally sourced food. Can you think of a better way to kick off summer with a bang, than in picturesque Port Perry? Me neither. Bring your drum, mat, some water and join me in welcoming the summer solstice on June 21. But he did pick up three awards, including Best in Show, in the Oshawa Art Association’s 43 Annual Juried Art Exhibition. “I’m pumped,” he says excit- edly. “This show has been very kind to me in the past.” O’Marra, who writes a col- umn on west Durham artists for the Metroland Durham Region Media Group, notes he had a third and a second place finish in the oils category last year and in 2009, respectively. His High Falls Figures oil paint- ing sees O’Marra in familiar ter- ritory, literally. The artist grew up in Bird’s Creek, has a cottage near Bancroft and many of his works are inspired by the area. He says the painting is an image from High Falls, a land- mark near Bancroft where Bap- tiste Lake empties over a dam into the York River. He first saw it as a five or six year old and now takes his children there. “It really has become a pre- cious spot, a magic place for me,” O’Marra says. A retaining wall at the site is only 18 inches or so wide, and on one side is a long drop to water and on the other to rock. But, as you can imagine, kids like to test their bravery by walk- ing across, a distance O’Marra estimates at 40 feet, as some did when he was there last summer with his camera. “There was this string of fig- ures walking across,” he recalls. “I realized right away it was a great image and came up with the idea.” The work shows five daring young people walking across the wall, cumulus clouds in a blue sky as the backdrop. High Falls Figures won the Best in Show award and First Place in the Oil Category. O’Marra’s Highway 115 View earned Sec- ond Place in the same category. Whitby artist Maureen Lowry was a double winner: her Flow- ers in a Blue Vase earned the Best Use of Colour award and a first-place finish in the Mixed Media Category. Check out the accompanying list to see all of the winners. However, two winners have yet to be chosen. Two new cat- egories were added this year and Oshawa Mayor John Henry will choose The Mayor’s Choice Award winner. The People’s Choice Award will be based on the numbers of ballots complet- ed and voted on by the general public during the show. The OAA Juried Art Exhibition was open to all Durham resi- dents. From 130 pieces submitted by artists across the region, 80 were selected for the show at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, running to July 3. From their efforts in the Ontario Youth Soccer League, to winning a pair of Ontario Cup champion- ships and a national silver medal, success has generally followed these girls everywhere. And while their time taking the pitch on the same team has drawn to a close, success is sure to follow. It was recently announced that 12 players from that group, coached by Richard Hirst and his staff, have signed national letters of intent to attend various NCAA Division I and II programs, along with NAIA programs. It’s quite a feat for the already accomplished girls. And their coach, too. “It’s the greatest feeling,” Hirst said of seeing his athletes advance. “They have those team accomplishments ... but these accomplishments are far great- er. The moment those kids are signing, personally the feeling of excitement and energy I got finding out about each kid and that they were going to sign was a greater feeling than those team accomplishments. “These things are taking them on the next step in their life.” The players Hirst is referring to include Zakiya McIntosh, Cassan- dra Wiltshire, Chelsea Santos and Veronica Torres of Ajax, along with Hayley Henderson, Nicole May- ers and Sarah Ford of Pickering. A pair of Whitby residents are also on the list, with Dana Forbes and Yazmin Ongtengco moving on, as are Scarborough’s Brittany Wood- house, Courtney Bahahursingh and Shannen Jainudeen. A few have even committed to the same schools. Both Jainudeen and Forbes will attend Mississippi State, while Henderson and Mayers will head off to California U of PA. Forde and Bahadursingh, meanwhile, will team up in Louisiana at Southern University. As for the others, McIntosh is heading off to the University of Louisville and Wiltshire to Grand Valley State University. Ongteng- co has signed with Florida Atlan- tic University, Santos at Grand Canyon University, Torres at Illi- nois Institute of Technology and Woodhouse at Brevard College in Monroe, Florida. A 13th player, Scarborough native Kaitlyn Keon -- grand- daughter of former Toronto Maple Leafs great Dave Keon -- is a two-sport star, playing both soccer and hockey. She has cho- sen the hockey path, committing to a hockey scholarship at Brown University. Hirst has coached these girls since their U12 season and he said the main goal when the team was put together was to move the players onto the next level in this type of fashion. “We got them together for col- lege showcasing and advance- ment to national teams,” said Hirst, who previously coached a 1989 United team that had five girls head south. “Those were the main goals.” Consider that goal reached. “The girls have done every- thing,” he said, noting champi- onships, scholarships and place- ments on national teams in both Canada and Trinidad and Toba- go. Laughton, who turned 17 last month, is coming off a solid rookie campaign with the Gen- erals where he posted 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points in 63 regular season games. The native of Oakville added a goal and an assist in 10 games during the Generals’ playoff run. “Scott continues the tradition of elite Generals who have been asked to represent Canada,” said Chris DePiero, the Generals’ head coach and general manager. Selected in the first round, third overall by the Generals in the 2010 OHL draft, Laughton represented Ontario at the World under-17 Hockey Challenge last December, where he helped Team Ontario capture gold while serving as an assistant captain. WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC Dempster to lead Great Britain OSHAWA -- Durham Col- lege baseball coach Sam Dempster will have a chance to guide the Great Britain national team to the 2013 World Baseball Clas- sic. The decision to expand the field for the World Baseball Classic was made recently, and Great Britain was among the list of new entries for the qualifying round for the event, which was first played back in 2006. The field of teams is grow- ing from the usual 16 up to 28. The 12 new teams will take part in a 2012 qualifi- er alongside the four teams who last competed in 2009, but didn’t win a game at the event. It’s expected that the qualifying round, which will take place in the lat- ter part of 2012, will divide those 16 teams into four pools of four teams for a six-game format. The four group winners will join the 12 teams with automatic places for the 2013 Clas- sic: Australia, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, the United States and Ven- ezuela. The composition of the four qualifying pools will be determined once the qual- ifying round venues are selected and will be based on geographical location, competitive balance and regional rivalries.SUBMITTED PHOTO ERIE -- The Pickering Power Green U10 soccer team won the championship of the Erie Admirals Memorial Day Shootout.
