PICKERING -- A visit to Dunbarton High
School’s 50th anniversary will be like a walk
through time.
The high school will celebrate the mile-
stone on Saturday, May 14 with a number of
events to help alumni of all years reminisce
about their younger days at the Pickering
school.
“The entire reunion is taking place at the
school,” says principal Carol Maher-Hawken,
something she says is unique for reunions.
“Pretty much the whole school will be
open.”

Dan McTeague
congratulates new
Pickering-Scarborough East MP
KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Tuesday night was an interesting
one for Dan McTeague and his family.
“My four year olds were a little surprised to see
me at home last night for supper,” he said in an
interview Wednesday.
Mr. McTeague has spent his time as a busy MP
in the area since 1993, until he lost his Pickering-
Scarborough East seat to first-time Conservative
candidate Corneliu Chisu in the May 2 federal
election.
“In the end it was a sweep, it was an electoral
hurricane very few could
withstand,” he said.
While the job took much
of his free time, he enjoyed
standing up for local resi-
dents on Parliament Hill.
“For me, the public ser-
vice is always the greatest
honour anyone can have
bestowed on them,” he
said.
While he would have
preferred residents to cast
votes in his favour Monday
night, he thanked the community for nearly two
decades of support.
“I’ve had 18 years of uninterrupted support and
that’s nothing to sneeze at,” he said.
And he wishes his successor the best and hopes
residents will give Mr. Chisu a little leeway while
he’s getting used to his demanding new job.
“He’s a very, very fine human being,” he said.
Mr. McTeague isn’t sure what will be next for
him once his offices are cleared out, but he’s sure
something will come along.
“It’s hard to make a busy man unbusy,” he said.
“I will find something, there’s no doubt. I will be
open to what the future may bring.”
Having gotten married just five days before
being elected into office in 1993, he looks forward
to being a full-time husband and father.
He also hopes to help rebuild the Liberal party,

ELECTION AFTERMATH
Longtime Liberal looks forward to family time
which lost 43 seats nationally this election, and plans to
stay involved in issues he cares about, such as surging
energy prices and veterans’ affairs.
“I’ll work as best as I can to ensure a wounded soldier
gets a pension for life,” he said.
As for getting back into politics: “I think it’s a little early
for that. I’m planning what to do tomorrow, much less
what to do several years from now.”
As for fellow outgoing Ajax-Pickering MP, Mark Hol-
land, he calls him an “asset to the Liberal party.
“This is not the last we’ve heard of Mr. Holland,” he said.
“His voice in Parliament has only been muted temporar-
ily.”

DURHAM -- Spring and summer are tough
times to be a food bank client.
With Easter gone and Thanksgiving six
months away, it’s the time of year when dona-
tions plummet while demand stays constant.
“It’s hard to make it through the summer to
the next time people are generous; we really
need to boost our supply,” says Sandy Brit-
tain, executive director at Feed the Need in
Durham.
With that in mind the agency recently
kicked off its spring food drive with a goal of
collecting 100,000 pounds of food and raising
$10,000 by the end of June.
It may sound like a staggering amount,
but Feed the Need’s member agencies need
between 140,000 and 150,000 pounds of food
every month.
Similar to the Daily Bread Food Bank in
Toronto, Feed the Need acts as a central dis-
tribution hub that sends donated food to 45
food banks, shelters, soup kitchens and out-
reach centres in Durham Region.
Ms. Brittain says several factors are putting
pressure on local food banks including the
rising cost of food, the fact that it’s too early
in the year for people to grow their own food
and cash-strapped students who start to run
out of loan money by this point in the year.
An estimated 41 per cent of food bank recip-
ients are children, while 56 per cent have a
serious illness or disability. About 20 per cent
are adults who have jobs, but still can’t afford
to put food on the table, often described as
the working poor.
Ms. Brittain is challenging Durham resi-
dents to organize food drives or fundraisers
at work, in their neighbourhood or through a
service club or social group they belong to.
Money donated to Feed the Need is used to
buy food in bulk directly from manufacturers
at reduced prices negotiated by the Ontario
Association of Food Banks.
Every dollar donated goes four or fives times
further than $1 spent in a grocery store. Food
donations can be dropped off at the Feed the
Need warehouse at 125 Clarence Biesenthal
Dr. in Oshawa. Large donations will be picked
up by Feed the Need.

OSHAWA -- In four years, 24 families will
be homeowners courtesy of Habitat for
Humanity Durham.
The organization announced a 24-unit
townhouse project, dubbed CentreTowne,
to be built at Centre and Royal streets in
Oshawa.
It’s the biggest project yet for Habitat Dur-
ham, as it’s built two single-family homes,
one in Oshawa and the other in Uxbridge.
During a ceremony Wednesday to announce
the project, Mary Bone, Habitat Durham
executive director, told the crowd of about 100
the project provides “affordable home owner-
ship” for 24 families.
“It’s what we’re about. It’s breaking the cycle
of poverty,” Ms. Bone said. “It’s a hand up and
not a handout.”
Each family would be buying its home at fair
market value, with a zero-interest loan. Mort-
gage payments are geared to 25 per cent of the
gross annual income, she noted.
Buying the home promotes pride in owner-
ship, Ms. Bone said.
The Oshawa project will be built in four
stages. Some site preparation work will be
done this year, with the ground being broken
on the first phase next spring. It will take four
years to complete the project, she said in an
interview.
The project will cost $4.6 million, so Habitat
has to raise that amount. A fundraising cam-
paign will begin shortly, she said.
“We are going to hit everyone in the capital
campaign, so get ready. Here we come,” Ms.
Bone told the audience.
In an interview, Ms. Bone said the 24 fami-
lies will be selected on an application basis
and they have to meet “specific criteria. There
has to be a need. They’re under-housed, in a
rental unit in bad condition,” she said, adding
housing affordability is another criteria.
The family also has to be willing to partner
with Habitat, giving “500 hours of sweat equi-
ty,” Ms. Bone noted, adding the family has to
be “part of the process, be part of Habitat.
“When the community helps build a house
for you, you can’t help but feel the need to
give back,” Ms. Bone said.
“This is huge. It’s been our dream always to
get into multi-units as quick as we could,” she
said.
The Oshawa house built by Habitat is
owned by Ken and Diane Nolan. They were
at the announcement, as were their youngest
children, Chelsea, 11, and Seleen, 9. Missing
were their older children, Kapri, 17 and Aus-
tin, 16.
Mr. Nolan said the down payment for their
house was “sweat equity”, or volunteering to
help build their house.
Families have to put in 500 hours, but the
Nolans did 750 hours, Mr. Nolan noted.
His health is questionable, so how much he
can do on the new project isn’t known. Mr.
Nolan is waiting on a double lung transplant.
“If that doesn’t interfere, I’ll be here.”
Pastor Ford Quinlan addressed the audi-
ence Wednesday, saying, “This is a wonder-
ful event for Oshawa and the Durham Region.
We dedicate this community of hope for 24
families. The message here today is hope is
here in Oshawa and the Durham Region.
There’s hope for the future, for tomorrow.”

FEDERAL ELECTION
Thanks to Mark,
hello to Chris
To the editor:
So, we have a new MP in Ajax and
Pickering.
In the meantime we should say a big
thank you to Mark Holland.
No matter whether we voted Liberal or
not, he has been a very good representative
in the House of Commons and deserves a
big thank you for his years spent there on
our behalf.
He has been an MP who stayed in touch
with his constituents and was always acces-
sible and honest in his words.
As for our newbie, he has big shoes to fill
and hopefully will follow suit and be as vis-
ible to us as he gets to know us and as we
get to know him.
Once again, a big thank you to Mr. Hol-
land.
Good luck.
Kathleen Slater

*** To the editor:
The fact that Stephen Harper won his
majority with a five per cent increase in the
popular vote and that a full 60 per cent of
us voted for left-leaning parties underline
the gross inequities in the way our democ-
racy works.
Even with a majority, the Conservatives
still do not represent the views or princi-
ples of most Canadians.
Giving the NDP status as the official
opposition will only serve to further polar-
ize this country. The Liberals took a beat-
ing, none more so than Michael Ignatieff,
a Rhodes scholar, a truly exceptional, sin-
cere and accomplished man, brought to
his knees by two years of scurrilous, relent-
less character assassination and a frac-
tured left.
The result was inevitable -- coming right
up the middle, a default victory for Mr.
Harper. Folks, there’s a runaway train bear-
ing down on us at full throttle. An unfet-
tered Harper, controlling both Houses, will
make this country unrecognizable in four
years.
We can’t say we weren’t warned.
Jonathan O’Mara

To the editor:
I would just like to remind the NDP that
here in Oshawa, the autoworkers moved
out a long time ago.
With big raises over the years and
employee discounts, autoworkers moved
east and north.
Yes, a lot of factory jobs were lost, but
somehow, even during the hard times
when the factories were idled, Oshawa
managed to survive.
It didn’t become a ghost town as many
thought. Jobs were created in other sec-
tors.
The NDP rolls into town every election
assuming they have a shoo-in candidate
their brothers and sisters will elect.
We are all lucky to have avoided that tax
pitfall.

PRIORITIES
Fields seem to matter
more than students
To the editor:
For the past three weeks, due to inclem-
ent weather, many high school sports have
been denied use of the fields whether it is
by the authority of the Town or by the prin-
cipal of their school.
Since the start of the season, all three of
our games have been cancelled.
We understand the importance of keep-
ing the field in good condition but at this
point we as students and coaches feel that
these cancellations have gotten out of con-
trol.
I would like to stress that our tax dollars
go into these fields to improve the athlet-
ic ability of students in Whitby, and at this
point the field is taking priority over the
needs of students.
We are paying for fields and get little use.
Most teachers say that I am wasting my
time because I am fighting an uphill bat-
tle, but this kind of thinking is disappoint-
ing because we live in a country where we
are encouraged to stand up for what we
believe in.
The issue may sound trivial to those who
are not in my shoes, but the reality is that I
am speaking for thousands of students.

Building dreams one home at a time in Durham
It’s fitting that Habitat for Humanity is
undertaking its most ambitious afford-
able housing construction project to date
in the region after two years of establish-
ing a presence here.
The international charity announced
this week it plans to build a 24-unit town-
house project in Oshawa at an eye-pop-
ping cost of $4.6 million. The project
comes after two other Habitat for Human-
ity builds in Durham -- one in Uxbridge
and another in Oshawa -- and will one
day be home to 24 Durham Region fam-
ilies who otherwise wouldn’t have much
hope of home ownership.
This project, scheduled to be built in
phases, expects to break ground next year.
In the meantime, residents from across
Durham Region are encouraged to help
out where they can, either through donat-
ing to the build (100 per cent of money
raised for the project will be spent on the
project), or by volunteering some of their
skills to help make it a reality. Alternative-
ly, residents across Durham can lend their
support at one of Habitat’s two ReStore
locations to help fund the administra-
tive costs associated with furthering local
projects.
As Pastor Ford Quinlan noted this week
at the event to announce the Habitat
build, it will be a place “where dreams
come true and there is life and joy.”
But, it’s important to note, the benefi-
ciaries of the project aren’t getting any-
thing for ‘free’. Each homeowner is select-
ed after meeting specific criteria and must
be willing to provide 500 hours of ‘sweat
equity’ by actively participating with the
organization on this build and others, if
necessary. Each family pays fair market
value for their home with a zero-interest
loan. Mortgage payments are geared to
income levels.
In the end, families are able to realize
their dream of home ownership, build
equity in their investment and enjoy the
pride that comes with having a little cor-
ner of the world to call their own.
Here’s hoping residents across Durham
Region help raise awareness and funds for
this worthy project.
Habitat for Humanity has made a new
home in Durham and is taking a long-
term view to address, in its own way, the
issue of housing affordability. Surely res-
idents across the region will not only
acknowledge its positive presence, but
work together to help make its projects a
success.

PICKERING -- Nick Wilson's mother was
born at the Hospital for Sick Children in
Toronto.
"She has a heart condition," said the 12-year-
old Sir John A. Macdonald Public School stu-
dent.
So he wants to give back to the hospital, and
he plans to do just that by dipping into his
library of many video games -- the ones he's
finished with, of course.
"Now I have Xbox," he said.
He chose to start raising money when he
took part in the Heart and Stroke Founda-
tion's Jump Rope For Heart at his school and
began thinking of ways he could help chari-
ties on his own. "I thought, 'I have a lot of
games I don't play," he said.
He has a wide variety of them for many sys-
tems, including Nintendo Gamecube and
Nintendo 64. He has piles of games -- many
of them doubles -- and they'll go for $10 each.
He also plans to sell some of his game sys-
tems he's no longer using.
But video games won't be the only means
for his fundraising efforts.
"I'm going to start a dog-walking business,"
said the young entrepreneur.
Nick doesn't have any dogs himself, but
says he has a lot of experience with his rela-
tives' pups. He plans to charge $20 per hour.
He lives in the Bay Ridges area. Those inter-
ested in buying a game or helping with his
fundraiser can call 289-928-0223.

The events will start off with opening ceremonies
at 11 a.m., followed by a staff reunion and lunch.
Former rugby players from all decades will strap
on some gear and hit the field at 2:30 p.m.
“It’s going to just be a fun game,” Ms. Maher-
Hawken says.
Those not interested in the game can head inside
to see the fashion show. A number of local stores
have donated clothing for the event, which will fea-
ture mostly current trends that students are excit-
ed to model. The music and background images
will be reminiscent of the past 50 decades, and the
proceeds will fund breast
cancer research.
The current student
council will host a barbe-
cue throughout the after-
noon.
From 3:30 to 7 p.m., alum-
ni can roll up their sleeves
and have some fun at the
“fun casino,” which will
include favourite games
such as blackjack and
wheel of fortune.
The principal expects the
decade rooms, which will
be designed to make visi-
tors feel like they’ve have
gone back in time, to be a big attraction.
“We have all of the yearbooks, different artifacts
we’ve found in the school, pictures they’d have had
in that time frame,” says the principal. “Each room
will have a living room from that decade.”
The committee is still collecting items to add to
the rooms -- anything from old photos to spirit
wear -- and would appreciate any donations.
The big attraction, an evening social that will fea-
ture live music and finger foods, will begin at 7:30
p.m.
A courtyard a number of alumni probably haven’t
been in before will be licensed for the day.
“We’ve always had a courtyard no one was
allowed in,” she says, adding recent renovations
have made it a nice space.
Dunbarton is at 655 Sheppard Ave. Although
parking is available, Ms. Maher-Hawken suggests
people carpool or take taxis since a lot of people
are attending. Those interested are encouraged to
buy tickets ahead of time since they’re going fast.
Prices will vary depending on the events alumni
wish to attend.

Home gardeners and lawn enthusiasts
generally accumulate a number of tools
of the trade in order to successfully
manage their gardening needs. As
a result, many homeowners build a
garden shed to store all their tools and
lawn care accessories.
A garden shed presents an ideal way
to store all of the tools and appliances
needed for the weekend hobby. Plus,
it enables homeowners to clear out
clutter from the garage or basement. A
locked garden shed can be a safe place
in which to store sharp tools, fuel and
some chemical products.
Just because the shed will have
utility doesn’t mean it has to be an
eyesore on the property. There are ways
to create or purchase garden sheds that
are aesthetically appealing and will
blend in with the landscape or the main
house.
Do-it-yourselfers who have decided
to build a garden shed and want to do so
affordably can shop around for lower-
priced material. It may be a good idea
to purchase a framing kit from a home-
improvement store or online retailer
and then shop around for exterior
materials. Individuals can also fi nd used
sheds from auction sites or newspaper
classifi eds and simply retrofi t these
structures to meet individual needs.
Although sheds will be exposed
to the elements, because they are not
livable structures they don’t require the
same level of construction as a home
or addition, like a garage. This means
that a homeowner is able to save some
money with materials. Pressboard may
be durable enough and less expensive
than plywood. There’s little need for
insulation or expensive windows.
In fact, unless it is for a decorative
standpoint, windows are unnecessary
altogether.
It is likely that people who have had
recent upgrades made on their homes
may have leftover materials that can
be put to use on a garden shed. Roofi ng
shingles, extra aluminum siding and
wood trim can be used on the shed.
Even leftover latex paints and stains
can be use on the shed.
Homeowners should visit a retailer
of prefabricated sheds to see how they
are made. This can provide insight as
to the size and structure and the type of
construction that will be needed.
If budget is not a concern,
homeowners may want to purchase
pre-made sheds that can be customized
to mimic the architecture and color of
the person’s home. Stained glass and
cottage features can make a shed seem
like an intimate retreat nestled in the
yard.
In addition to being a fi ne place to
store garden tools, a shed can also be
constructed to serve as a child’s play
space. A miniature home in the yard
can be a fun play zone for kids and be
the centerpiece for hours of imaginative
outdoor fun.

Once the fi rst wave of summer heat
arrives, homeowners everywhere look
to the air conditioner to help survive the
summer swoon. Though few things are
as refreshing as a cold room on a hot
afternoon, relying too heavily on the air
conditioner is a recipe for a high utility
bill, something not all people can readily
afford.
Reducing summer cooling costs does
not mean families must grin and bear
it the next time a heat wave arrives.
Instead, homeowners can take several
steps to reduce cooling costs while
staying comfortable through the dog
days of summer.
• Embrace the warm summer breeze.
Once that fi rst hot day arrives and the
air conditioner is turned on for the fi rst
time, many households simply leave
the A/C on for the rest of summer. This
is not only wasteful, but in many cases,
it’s unnecessary as well. If the air
outside is pleasant and a warm breeze
is blowing, turn the A/C off, open the
windows and invite that warm summer
air in. During summer the temperatures
may fl uctuate, and it can be a welcome
respite to relax in a room with a warm
breeze instead of the constant hum of
the air conditioner.
• Protect the home from the sun. Many
times a home’s interior heats up
because there’s nothing outside to
shield it from hot rays. Landscape
features like shade trees add aesthetic
appeal to a property and can be planted
to keep sun from beating down on the
home during hot afternoons. Awnings
and window coverings also make
great allies in protecting a home from
blazing summer sun, and none of these
alternatives will cause the energy bill
to increase.
• Clean or replace fi lters. If an A/C unit’s
fi lters are dirty or old, this makes it
harder for the unit to cool the room. As
a result, people inside the home then
increase the power on the unit to cool
the room more quickly or effectively.
However, if an A/C unit isn’t cooling
the room on a lower setting, it’s
probably because the fi lter needs to be
cleaned. Cleaning the fi lter is easy and
takes just a few minutes. If the fi lter is
beyond repair, replace it.
• Make sure the doors and windows
are shut. When the A/C is running,
all doors and windows should remain
closed. Open doors and windows only
make it harder to keep a room cool, and
turning up the A/C is not the answer.
• Have the units inspected. Heating
ventilation and air conditioning units
should be inspected by a qualifi ed
HVAC technician. Technicians can
determine if a unit will operate at
peak capacity or struggle through the
summer, costing homeowners money
as the summer carries on.

ART AND ARTISTS
Fashioning an artistic style
Whitby artist
showing work
in Ajax; on this
weekend’s Oshawa
studio tour
MIKE RUTA
mruta@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Visitors to the Gun-
dry household on this weekend’s
studio tour may mistake their
hostess as the daughter of the art-
ist.
And they would be right, as Tay-
lor Gundry’s mom is artist Sheri
Gundry.
But both are showing work
and, with Sheri away, Taylor will
be greeting guests at their home
in Whitby and showing them
around.
She recently became the first
youth member of the Oshawa Art
Association.
“I kind of was the reason it was
brought forth (to the OAA execu-
tive) so I’m quite honoured,” says
Taylor, 16. “And being able to be
more involved in the arts commu-
nity.”
She’s certainly earned her
stripes.
Taylor, in 2008, sold her first
painting -- and her second and
her third, as one patron bought all
three at Brooklin Art in the Park.
One of her works was chosen at
Station Gallery’s recent Drawing
for Art event.
She’s still experimenting with
styles and media, but her vibrant
colours and sense of composition
show an artist who’s hitting her
stride.
Sheri said Taylor could impress
even when she was an infant, as
she did when she produced a
work as an 18-month-old. It’s not
remarkable that she did it, but that
the work was good.
“It was actually a really well-
structured piece, frameable,” Sheri
says.
Taylor credits her mom, who
stayed at home with her when she
was young, for getting her involved
in art.
She’s done batik, painting on
silk, pencil drawings, pencil and
crayon and recently has been get-
ting into watercolours.
“I think I’m still trying to find my
style,” she says.
Abstract art was a way of calm-
ing her down as a youngster with
ADHD.
“She would come home stressed
and a lot of her artwork was de-
stressing,” Sheri says.
She recalls saying to her daugh-
ter once, “you’ve got to have
something behind it, what does
it mean?”, provoking an angry,
“it doesn’t mean anything” reply
from Taylor.
“It was more just an expression
kind of thing and not wanting to
follow guidelines,” Taylor recalls.
“I still do abstract but as I’ve got-
ten more serious with it ... they do
have a bit more realism in them.”
Studio tour visitors can see a
variety of her work on the tour stop
at 1007 Walton Blvd.
Apart from the tour, Taylor, her
mom and artists Kim Mather and
Meagan Mather have a joint show
at the McLean Community Cen-
tre in Ajax until the end of May.
Taylor’s contributions include a
few “sunglasses” pieces, a series
of young women in shades. Tay-
lor says they show her love of fash-
ion, something she’s always been
interested in. She notes a recur-
ring theme is the colour of the sun-
glasses, purple lenses with green
frames.
“I was always drawn to sunglass-
es just because they have a real
fashion edge to them,” she says.
The McLean centre is at 95 Magill
Dr. (at Westney Road).
The studio tour is May 7 and 8
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day
in Oshawa, Whitby and Claring-

Book launch
May 7 in Ajax
AJAX -- It’s cottage season, and while
a trip up north might not seem very
palatable with all of the wet weather of
late, a new book will help get you in the
mood.
Independent publisher Sunshine in
a Jar Press is holding a launch for its
first book on May 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at
Safari Bar and Grill (downstairs).
From the Cottage Porch: An Anthol-
ogy, edited by Jessica Outram and Ewa
Krynski, features short stories, memoirs
and poems by 31 Canadian writers,
including a number of Durham authors.
“Picnicking on the rocks of Geor-
gian Bay, relocating an outhouse in
Muskoka or catching tadpoles at Algon-
quin Park, From the Cottage Porch
captures the spirit of cottage country in
Ontario,” states a press release.
The launch features readings, live
music and snacks.
Safari is at 60 Randall Dr., west of
Church Street, Ajax.

Pickering Saturday
PICKERING -- Three local authors
in an all-Canadian collection are sign-
ing copies of the book in Pickering this
weekend.
Vilma Blenman and Bonnie Bel-
dan-Thomson, of Pickering, and Adele
Simmons, of Whitby, will be at Michael’s
Bookstore in Pickering on May 7. Enjoy
hot apple cider and meet the authors
who contributed to A Second Cup of
Hot Apple Cider from noon to 5 p.m.
“This all-Canadian collection
reflects life in a First Nations’ commu-
nity of the Far North, a remote farm
on the Prairies, a multicultural kinder-
garten in Toronto, a lonely highway in
Nova Scotia, the isolation ward of a
children’s hospital and more,” states a
press release. “The short pieces -- each
of which contains a complete story
-- make it easy for readers to pick up
the book and read something satisfy-
ing when taking a break from their busy
schedules.”
Michael’s Bookstore is at 2200

Gerri Proulx: Pickering’s ‘accidental’ mosaic artist
It’s fascinating that one small
event can be the point on which
the birth of an artistic career can
turn.
For mosaic artist Gerri Proulx,
of Pickering, it was finding a solu-
tion to a crack in a ceramic tile
portrayal of a Van Gogh paint-
ing. The tile was in the posses-
sion of a friend and Proulx, rath-
er than allowing it to be pitched
out, ‘fixed’ it by breaking it up into
small pieces, then reassembling
it, fastened together with grout,
and fitted to the top of a small
table, thus creating her very first
mosaic. That was eight years ago
and she hasn’t looked back.
The Sault Ste. Marie native spent
the first 38 years of her work-
ing life as an elementary school
teacher in her hometown. As it
turns out, her father had been
a craftsman, working in ceram-
ics and wood, but the artistic bug
didn’t bite Proulx until that fateful
moment with the Van Gogh tile.
She quickly launched into exper-
iments with mosaic techniques
and took courses in working with
a variety of mosaic media in the
GTA and as far afield as Halibur-
ton.
Initially, she made the typical
utilitarian items such as trays,
wall sconces and mirrors, many
of them fashioned with broken
plates (purchased from Good-
will and similar stores), and then
using vitreous tile and coloured
glass, assembled in patterns and
designs. Soon, however, she felt
the urge to move beyond the craft
of the genre into fine art, start-
ing with a series of peace sign
designs and, more recently, large
abstract and scenic creations in
coloured glass with antique win-
dow frames.
Proulx has shown her work in
various juried and festival shows
and has work displayed on a per-
manent basis in the Maplestone
Gallery in Creemore. She also
dabbles in creative writing, pub-
lishing her short stories where
she can and participating in the
get-togethers of a local Durham
writers group. And, she is serious-
ly considering offering her, now,
professional expertise in classes
for those in the region interested
in mosaic art.
See Gerri Proulx’s creations in
the upcoming May 14 and 15 Dur-
ham West Studio tour as she dis-
plays her work with life partner
Alpheus Jones in their Pickering
home, 849 Sanok Dr., Pickering.

ing where all of the stops are, at

SWIMMING
Ste. Marie to Gopher Minnesota
Ajax Aquatic Club
athlete signs scholarship
SHAWN CAYLEY
scayley@durhamregion.com
WHITBY -- Devin Ste. Marie is swimming off to
the United States.
The Whitby resident and longtime member
of the Ajax Aquatic Club has signed a nation-
al letter of intent with the University of Min-
nesota, ending a long process that saw some
50 schools show interest during the recruiting
window.
While going through the process is some-
thing Ste. Marie says she has always dreamed
about, even with it all said and done now, the
17 year old still has a hard time believing the
reality of her situation.
“I actually can’t really believe it still. It’s a
really big accomplishment and something I’ve
always looked to,” she said in a recent inter-
view. “It was always one of my goals to get a
scholarship. I can’t believe that it’s done.
“It’s a big relief to have it signed and sent
away. Now I know what I am doing next year.”
Looking back on things, Ste. Marie says
though deciding on her destination for the
next four years was exciting, stressful and, at
times, pain-staking, it also had an element of
flattery to it.
Such is the nature when some 50 schools
from the United States are trying to land your
talents -- for good reason considering Ste.
Marie’s success over the years with AAC.
“I got a bunch of calls the first week they
were allowed to call. It was so exciting hearing
from all these schools that were interested in
me,” recalls Ste. Marie, who has been a mem-
ber of the Ajax club since around the age of
12. “You don’t really know how many are out
there. It was really cool to have them reach out
to me.”
In narrowing down her decision, Ste. Marie
always had in the back of her mind that coach
Kelly Kremer and Minnesota were the first
to make contact with her and establish their
interest. Minnesota was also the first formal
visit to a campus that she made.
While she also went on visits to Louisiana
State and Penn State, the first impressions of
Minnesota were lasting.
“It just kind of fit that I would go there,” she
says.
As excited as Ste. Marie is to begin this next
chapter in her life, the Golden Gophers seem
just as thrilled that she’ll be joining them.
“Devin fit in perfectly with our team dur-
ing her visit to Minnesota last fall,” Krem-
er explains in a press release on the school’s
website. “She is a great butterfly and freestyle
specialist who will help us fill the void left by
a large graduating class of flyers and freesty-
lers.”
And while it was her swimming exploits that
ultimately secured Ste. Marie the scholarship,
she is the first to admit the road to success
hasn’t been paved solely on her own.
Ste. Marie pointed to the support of her par-
ents and the guidance of coach Matt Bell at
AAC for helping her reach the goal she has
kept in mind since her elementary school
days.

Ramieri signs with
St. Thomas Tommies
SAINT PAUL, MINN. -- Defenceman
Joe Ramieri of the Pickering Panthers
confirmed his commitment to play for
the University of St. Thomas Tommies
in Saint Paul, Minnesota beginning with
the 2011-12 MIAC season.
The six-foot-two, 210-pound native
of Smithfield, Rhode Island, spent the
2010–2011 season with the Panthers
where he finished second in scoring
among the club’s defencemen. While
logging significant minutes for the Pan-
thers, the tough, stay-at-home defence-
man was also a key figure on the Pan-
thers top penalty-killing unit.
By year end, Ramieri had numer-
ous offers from top DIII schools and
found St. Thomas to be the perfect aca-
demic and athletic fit.
“We are very excited that Joe has
decided to commit to St. Thomas. Joe
is an excellent student, hockey player,
and, most importantly, he is a quality
young man. We expect Joe to come to
campus in the fall and make an impact
with our program. Joe is a great addi-
tion to the UST hockey family, and we
look forward to having him here for the
next four years,” said Parker Burgess,
UST assistant coach.

Pickering’s
Brandon Robinson
a top OHL prospect
PICKERING -- Brandon Robinson
will surely be glued to his computer
screen Saturday morning.
The 15-year-old Pickering resi-
dent, like many hopefuls his age,
will be watching intently as the 2011
Ontario Hockey priority selection plays
out over the Internet and live at ontari-
ohockeyleague.com starting at 9 a.m.
Robinson, a six-foot-three for-
ward with good skating ability and a
knack for putting the puck in the net, is
expected to be a first-round pick.
“Big strong kid. Power forward.
Can score some goals,” was the
assessment given by Oshawa Gener-
als coach and GM Chris DePiero when
asked about the Toronto Junior Cana-
diens product. “He is going to be one
of those guys that is attractive to a lot
of teams.”
While playing this past season in
the Greater Toronto Hockey League
with the Junior Canadiens -- where
he scored three goals in three games
at the OHL Cup -- Robinson was also
a member of the St. Mary Monarchs’
high school team that won the LOSSA
championship.
TRACK
Felicien to compete in National Track League series
PICKERING -- The National Track League has
confirmed Perdita Felicien, the 2007 world
championship silver medallist and two-time
Olympian, will compete in three of five 2011
NTL meets.
The Pickering native said of competing in the
inaugural edition of the NTL: “It’s great to have
an elite racing circuit in Canada. The NTL will
help me prepare well for the 2011 world cham-
pionships in Korea.”
The 2010 world indoors silver medallist
added, “Racing at home the year before the
Olympic Games is going to be a treat. It’s always
a pleasure to compete in Canada, the Canadi-
an public and media have shown me so much
support and appreciation over the years.”
Felicien will compete in Edmonton Inter-
national Track Classic June 29, Harry Jerome
(Vancouver) International Track Classic July
1, Toronto International Games and NTL Final
July 13.

ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE
Generals looking at best player available in OHL draft
SHAWN CAYLEY
scayley@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- Chris DePiero
insists he won’t be drafting
based on positional need
when the Oshawa Gener-
als dial in to announce their
first-round pick during Sat-
urday’s Ontario Hockey
League priority selection.
While it’s evident that
some holes on the blue-line
will need to be filled with the
departures of Calvin de Haan
and Tony DeHart, along with
the possibility that one or
both of Scott Valentine and
Dan Maggio may follow,
DePiero assures he’ll tab the
best player available when
it comes time to announce
their 16th overall selection.
“We are going to evaluate
each pick as its own. What
happens in terms of what
direction we go, forward or
(defenceman) or goaltender,
will be determined based on
who has been taken,” said
DePiero, coach and gener-
al manager of the team. “I
think that is going to factor
into how we approach it.”
The wait-and-see mind-
set marks a slight change in
approach for DePiero, sitting
in the captain’s chair for his
third draft as GM of the club,
and his staff.
While they have still gone
through the process of com-
piling a lengthy list of those
to consider, the fact is that
after two years of drafting
inside the top five -- select-
ing Boone Jenner (fourth in
2009) and Scott Laughton
(third in 2010) -- being so
much further down in the
draft order means DePiero
will be watching intently as
the first 15 picks come off the
board.
“It’s unlike in the last few
years where we could (zero
in),” he said, noting at this
time last year, it was clear that
Alex Galchenyuk was going
first to Sarnia and Brendan
Gaunce second to Belleville,
allowing DePiero to hone in
on Laughton. “Last year at
this time I had an 85-per cent
certainty rate as to who was
in front of me and who was
behind me.”
This year not so much.
Outside of the first few
picks, which will see under-
ager Aaron Ekblad become
a Barrie Colt with the first
overall pick, followed likely
by Nicholas Ritchie going to
the Peterborough Petes with
the second, a lot remains up
in the air.
PICKERINGPICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURE When it comes to
making vehicles look their best,
there is one place that the major
car dealerships in Pickering turn
to: Shammy’s Auto Detailing.
Luckily, Shammy’s is also open
to the public, which means you
can have your vehicle looking
and smelling like new!
In business for over 10
years, Shammy’s is well known
in the community for their great work. The great staff
work hard to clean your vehicle inside and out.
There are several different packages to choose
from, or you can create your own custom package
to suit your needs. The Silver package includes an
exterior wash, clean rims, tires and wheel wells, clean
windows inside and out,
interior vacuum, interior wipe
down and dress tires, starting
from $29.95. The Gold
package includes everything
in the Silver package plus
an interior shampoo starting
from $120. To really make
your vehicle shine inside
and out, opt for the Platinum
package, which adds a clay
bar treatment, engine shampoo, exterior compound
to remove light scratches and surface oxidization,
high speed polish for a sparking shine, paint sealant
applicant and minor paint touch-ups, starting at
$150.
Customers can also opt for fabric protection,
an easy way to protect your vehicle’s fabrics from
stains and spills. Treating the leather in your vehicle
will help prevent cracking, stops the colour from fading
and extends the life of the leather. To keep the new
car shine, you can get paint seal protection, which will
shield your paint from fading and excess oxidization.
It also protects against acid rain, repels UV rays and
prevents surface corrosion.
In addition to detailing, you can bring your
vehicle to Shammy’s to protect it from the elements.
They offer two rust proofi ng services. The Dripless Oil
System is an advanced treatment that does not drip
off, offering superior results by leaving the protection
where it should be - on your vehicle! They also offer
Black Asphalt Undercoating & Clear Upper Body Rust
Protection, which is a long lasting rust protection system
that lasts the lifetime of your vehicle and also acts as a
sound deadening for less road noise. This system dries
solid, making it far superior to other products.
Shammy’s offers free shuttle bus service for
customers in Pickering, Ajax and Whitby.
Shammy’s Auto Detailing is located at 933 Dillingham
Road in Pickering. To make an appointment, please
call (905) 831-2444 or for more information, please
visit the website at www.shammysauto.com.

BASEBALL
Pirates, Indians ready for diamond battle
Pickering, Ajax
return to Ontario
Senior Baseball
Association
DURHAM -- There’s a
new team on the block in
the Ontario Senior Base-
ball Association, bringing
the total number in Dur-
ham Region to seven in the
16-team loop.
The Oshawa Athletics will
join the Pickering Pirates,
Whitby Chiefs, Brooklin
Dodgers, Ajax Indians, Clar-
ington Cubs and Oshawa
Talons in the league, which
now has a decade of history
behind it.
Those seven teams,
along with the Newmar-
ket Express, comprise the
league’s Eastern Confer-
ence, while the Western
Conference is made up of
three teams from Missis-
sauga, two from Vaughan,
and one each from York,
Forest Glen and Burling-
ton.
The Pirates, the best of
the local teams last year,
already have a pair of
games in the books, split-
ting a doubleheader with
the Burlington Bulls last
weekend. Weather per-
mitting, the league will get
into full swing this coming
weekend.
Here’s a breakdown
on each of the two local
teams.
Pickering Pirates
The Pirates are coming
off a 17-9-2 season, which
put them first in the East-
ern Conference and helped
propel them to the league
final, where they lost to
the Bulls in a best-of-five
series that went the full
five games. Led by Ryan
D’Souza, Jeff Murdoch,
Scott Gray, Sydney Saun-
ders and Romeo Persaud
and buoyed by the addition
of Brad Binns, Jason Ster-
giadis and Jason George,
the Pickering team hopes
to win one more game this
season.
Ajax Indians
The Indians once again
found themselves barely
making it into the playoffs
last season, finishing fifth
with a record of 13-13-2 but,
unlike years past, unable to
capitalize on the opportu-
nity to create a Cinderella-
like run. Led by Robbie Cal-
ieu, Paul Evans and Warren
Eslinger, the Indians signed
11 new players this season,
including five pitchers, as
they look to carry over a
strong finish last year to
this season.
More information about
the league, including
schedules, can be found at
www.leaguelineup.com/
ontarioseniorbaseball.
HOCKEY
Ridgebacks land standout defender from QMJHL
OSHAWA -- Marlin Muylaert
has landed quite the catch for
his UOIT Ridgebacks men’s
hockey team.
The head coach of the club
announced last week it was suc-
cessful in recruitment of Ham-
ilton native and Quebec Major
Junior Hockey League defensive
defenceman of the year, Andrew
Randazzo.
A former player for the Drum-
mondville Voltigeurs, Randazzo
will join the Ridgebacks this fall.
Randazzo, a five-foot-nine,
210-pound right-hand shot, was
also a plus 30 this past year for
the Voltigeurs, who finished in
second place in the TELUS west
division with a 45-15-5-3 record
before sweeping Chicoutimi out
in the first round of the playoffs
and falling to Gatineau in six
games in round two. In those 10
playoff games, Randazzo had
three goals and one assist and
was a plus five.
