PICKERING -- Pat Horne has been fighting an
airport proposal for the past 40 years and con-
tinues to speak out.
An original member of People Or Planes,
she’s still a member of the newer version of
the anti-airport group, Land Over Landings.
The Claremont resident has seen the govern-
ment demolish homes in the formerly vibrant
community of Brougham since the land was
expropriated by the federal government for an
airport in 1972. Landowners Transport Can-
ada recently announced the next 60 homes
to be demolished, but no decision has been
made on whether an airport will go ahead.
“Every house that goes, it kind of breaks your
heart,” Ms. Horne said.

In Ajax the additional hours mean the
restoration of midday service to the 226
Duffins route, which was cut in 2008, and
midday service for the 222 Audley South
route, which currently only runs during
rush hour.
The bus routes in Ajax-Pickering will
be streamlined with fewer routes but the
number of buses on the routes increase.
All the areas that are currently being ser-
viced will continue to be serviced and
there will be additions when new com-
munities come online as well as improved
evening and weekend service. Routes
with poor on-time performance are being
changed and improved.
For example, in Pickering the 107 Rose-
bank is being shortened and part of the
route will go to the 103 Amberlea. Because
it’s being lengthened, an additional bus
will be added to the Amberlea route.
Changes in Ajax take effect in June
while the Pickering changes take effect
in October once the pedestrian bridge
over Hwy. 401 from the Pickering GO sta-
tion to the Pickering Town Centre is com-
plete. The bridge will allow DRT to service
a Pickering Parkway terminal instead of
having to pull into the GO station.
“Customers won’t have to endure sitting
in a bus in the traffic going over the 401
on Liverpool and Brock, so it’s going the
reduce some of the traffic wait and make
the buses more efficient,” said Mr. Ward,
adding that DRT and GO are still negoti-
ating exactly where the new pickups will
be.
As well, DRT has committed to running
a bus from the Whitby GO station along
Victoria Street then Bayly Street out to the
Rouge Hill GO station once the Region
widens Bayly Street in the Lynde Creek
Marsh area between Ajax and Whitby to
two lanes, likely in 2012.
Mr. Ward said DRT identified the need
to improve service in Ajax and Pickering
years ago.
“In 2008 we identified the routes were
becoming inefficient due to traffic and
ongoing delays and drivers just didn’t
have enough time to go around the loops,”
he said, adding that this often left buses
running late.
In 2009 DRT told the Region’s tran-
sit executive committee that Ajax and
Pickering routes were in big trouble but
Regional councillors left the situation as it
was. “There was no money in the budget
and there were no service improvements
going on,” said Mr. Ward.
Then in 2010, DRT was forced to make
emergency changes in Ajax due to the
Fairall Street construction near the Ajax
GO station.
At the time, DRT was able to make the
routes in Ajax more efficient and Mr. Ward
said the feedback from residents, espe-
cially in the northwest and northeast part
of the town, has been good. Pickering’s
routes have remained the same since the
transit service was amalgamated and des-
perately needed fine tuning, Mr. Ward
said.
Pickering residents are invited to an
information session at the Pickering Town
Centre on May 5 between 10 a.m. and 9
p.m. They can take a look at the proposed
changes and get their questions answered
by DRT.
All upcoming changes will be commu-
nicated to riders through flyers and bulle-
tins on buses as well as advertising in the
News Advertiser, said Mr. Ward.

PICKERING -- Police are trying track down the rightful
owners of property recovered from two youths accused
of breaking into parked cars in a Pickering neighbour-
hood Monday night.
Durham officers arrested the teens after a resident
reported suspicious activity on Ashfield Crescent just
before midnight. The suspects were found in pos-
session of more than 50 items allegedly taken from
unlocked vehicles throughout Pickering, police said.
Two Pickering males, both 16, are charged with theft
and possession of stolen property. One of the boys was
also charged with being in possession of a prohibited
weapon, a butterfly knife.
Police are appealing to victims in attempts to deter-
mine the extent of the thefts, and to return property to
rightful owners.

DURHAM -- Durham Region’s Health Department
is alerting clients of a Bowmanville body piercing
studio after determining non-sterile equipment may
have been used in procedures over the past year.
Non-sterile equipment may have been used in
piercings done at Sins and Temptations on King
Street West from June of 2010 until the present, the
health department said in a news release issued
Thursday. Use of non-sterile equipment could lead
to transmission of diseases such as hepatitis and
HIV, the department said.
The health department has no evidence of trans-
mission of infectious diseases but recommends any-
one who had body piercing done at Sins and Temp-
tations during the specified time period should take
precautions until evidence of transmission of infec-
tious diseases can be ruled out.
Affected individuals are encouraged to avoid shar-
ing clippers, razors, toothbrushes and other person-
al items, and to use a condom during sexual activ-
ity.
Hairdressing and tattooing are also done at the stu-
dio, but only those who received body piercing need
to be concerned, the department said.
Clients who received body piercing services at this
facility during the specified time period are asked
to call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-
6241 or 1-800-841-2729, Monday to Friday from
9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to obtain an information package.
Clients can also call the health department line this
Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to
4 p.m.

AJAX -- An Ajax man employed as a City of
Toronto bylaw officer has been charged in
connection with a sexual assault that alleg-
edly occurred while he was in uniform and
on duty.
Police allege a city employee went to a
massage parlour in the Guildwood area
at about 1 p.m. on March 28.
While receiving a massage, he alleg-
edly produced a document the victim
believed was his employee identification
and then sexually assaulted her, police
said.
“The owner of the massage parlour
contacted the City of Toronto and they in
turn contacted us,” Toronto Police Con-
stable Tony Vella said.
Police are working closely with City
officials on the case, Vella added.
“The employee no longer works for
the City and we’re cooperating with the
police investigation,” City spokesman
Rob Andrusevich said.
Mr. Andrusevich added that the
employee’s terminated status is “of a
permanent nature.”
Edward Hayes, 48, of Ajax, is charged
with two counts of sexual assault, two
counts of breach of trust by a public offi-
cer and municipal corruption.
The charge of municipal corruption
falls under Section 123 of the Crimi-
nal Code, which prohibits municipal
employees from using their position to
give or accept rewards or benefits.
Mr. Hayes is scheduled to appear in
court on May 13.
Police believe there may be more vic-
tims.
Anyone with information is asked to

DEVELOPMENT
Seaton won’t be
environmentally
sustainable under
current plan
To the editor:
Re: The presently planned development of
Seaton.
The aquifers that flow under the land in
Seaton from the Oak Ridges Moraine are
approximately twice the size of Lake Ontar-
io.
Many scientific reports conclude high
density development in Seaton will pollute
the fresh water aquifer that feed the creeks
and streams and which provide drinking
water to approximately two million citi-
zens.
Some progressive municipalities are
already planning to keep their aquifers
healthy as down the road they will be able
to use the aquifer water if Lake Ontario
water becomes too polluted to drink in 50
to 100 years.
Could we develop in Seaton without
damaging the aquifers?
Yes, if proper storm receptors, holding
tanks and other modern technology is used
that was provided to the City of Pickering
Seaton Sustainability chairman Councillor
Doug Dickerson.
The impact of salt on the aquifers could
be reduced dramatically if one was to be
creative.
What I see in Pickering’s official plan
amendment is nothing more than another
urban development that will not make the
Seaton community environmentally sus-
tainable.

Cap, don’t trade,
carbon emissions
To the editor:
Far too much oxygen was been wasted
regarding a ‘cap and trade’ system to deal
with carbon emissions in Canada.
To cut emissions, a better idea is a ‘cap’
system that is strictly enforced with large
monetary penalties including punitive
damages. Give organizations time to adjust
to the new system and compliance will
grow -- they have no choice.
We don’t need another ‘stock market’,
especially one run by the government.
The European system (Emission Trading
Scheme) was/is highly ineffective and rife
with fraud and abuse. It has led to windfall
profits for a few, volatile prices and crime.
How can we follow that example?
As well, European emissions were
reduced by an insignificant amount at a
cost of billions of euros. ‘Business-as-usu-
al’ is a better option than ‘cap and trade’.

PESTICIDES
Government intrudes
in our lives once again
To the editor:
The government has banned pesticides
on our lawns. I can’t put any on my front
lawn because it might cause someone to
get cancer. The only person on my lawn is
me, once a week, when I cut the grass.
But, pesticides are allowed on golf cours-
es and sports fields. Don’t kids run around
playing soccer for an hour, trip, fall, roll on
the grass on these fields which have pesti-
cides on them?
Pesticides have been used for eons with
no problems. I believe it is just the govern-
ment once again telling us how to live our
lives by fear mongering.

Each and every vote matters in Durham Region
Durham Region voters have an opportu-
nity Monday to determine who will form
Canada’s next national government.
Candidates in ridings across the region, of
all political stripes, have knocked on doors,
debated issues at locally organized forums
and communicated via campaign literature
and social media. These men and women
represent a diversity of opinion, of policy
preferences, and of approaches to gover-
nance.
Now, Durham Region voters have an obli-
gation to distill the messages they’ve been
hearing, determine for themselves who
best represents their interests and get out
and cast a vote on Monday, May 2. Who you
choose to vote for is a matter of personal
preference, certainly, but the act of voting is
part of our collective civic responsibility.
And given the impressive results of
advance polls in Durham last weekend,
it would appear that more and more resi-
dents are paying attention and exercising
their franchise. Preliminary results from
Elections Canada this week showed a 34.5
per cent increase in voter turnout at Dur-
ham’s advance polls, with a whopping 67
per cent increase in participation in Ajax
and Pickering. Across the nation, some two
million advance votes were cast, a particu-
larly notable improvement considering that
in the 2008 federal election, the lowest per-
centage of voters in Canadian history cast a
ballot nationally.
Last weekend’s impressive advance poll
numbers represent important democratic
momentum that Durham Region voters can
build on come Monday.
In the simplest terms, each and every vote
matters. Every single ballot represents, per-
haps, the most important individual free-
dom Canadians enjoy: the right to choose
who leads and represents us at home
and abroad. And the encouraging level of
engagement among Durham Region youth
during this campaign should also translate
into ballots being cast.
A new national government is going to be
elected Monday in any case. Don’t underes-
timate the power you have -- the power of
one democratic choice -- to help shape the
outcome. It’s not necessarily about winners
and losers; the government we elect is the
government for all Canadians.
Polls open Monday at 9:30 a.m. Make sure
you make the time to cast your ballot, live
up to this important civic obligation, and
choose with both your heart and with your
head. You’ll see the results of your effort by
the end of the day.

AJAX -- For the second year in a row,
Veridian Corporation has been named
one of Canada’s greenest employers.
The designation comes through the
Canada’s Top 100 Employers project and
the company earned the honour through
various initiatives, including the Veridi-
an Clean Summer Air Challenge, which
encouraged people to walk, run, cycle,
carpool or take public transit to work.
The company also provides interest-
free loans towards the purchase of ener-
gy-efficient appliances and hybrid vehi-
cles and provides employees who do vol-
unteer work access to company funds
and resources.
As well, Veridian supports education
initiatives, including an energy conser-
vation program for Grade 5 students
and provides research support for elec-
trical vehicle development at UOIT. The
company added a green, LEED-certified
addition to its Ajax headquarters recent-
ly.
“Veridian is proud of its long track
record of caring for the environment,
and the awards and recognition received
for its ongoing commitment to envi-
ronmental sustainability,” said Michael
Angemeer, president and CEO of Verid-
ian.
“The LEED-eligible expansion of our
head office in Ajax, a growing fleet of
hybrid and electric vehicles, and award-
winning energy conservation and envi-
ronmental programs for employees and
customers are just a few examples of our
environmental leadership.”

More than 1,400 bus
passes issued through
program in 2010
REKA SZEKELY
rszekely@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- A program that allowed Dur-
ham kids to turn their library cards into bus
passes will be back this summer.
Last year, Durham libraries partnered with
Durham Region Transit (DRT) on the Ride
to Read program, where children in Grade 8
and younger signed up for summer reading
programs and got a sticker on their library
cards giving them free access to DRT buses in
July and August.
Donna Bright, head librarian in Ajax,
reports 1,449 passes were issued through the
program in the two months with the biggest
uptake in Oshawa where 476 passes were
issued. The program was more successful in
south Durham, where there is more transit
service, than in the north.
“Nonetheless all eight libraries are back on
board again and we’re really pleased,” said
Ms. Bright, announcing that the program will
be available again this summer.
Ms. Bright believes the program gave more
people access to the library. “We had some
families who came right away who were large
families who wouldn’t be able to use transit
together ... we were surprised to see families
with five or six children coming in,” she said.
Ms. Bright pointed out that families could
use the passes not only to get to the library
but to recreation facilities and anywhere else
they needed to go in Durham.
The libraries are hoping for even more par-
ticipation this year and plan to promote it in
elementary schools before students are dis-
missed for the summer. “Last year we didn’t
get as early a start promoting through the
schools as we’d like to have gotten ... so we’d
like to see a greater uptake on people using
transit and people joining summer reading
programs,” said Ms. Bright.

Students with learning
disabilities benefit
from special software
MELISSA MANCINI
mmancini@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Ryan Pittman’s classroom doesn’t look
any different than most, except his students aren’t
using paper and pencils.
The students in his class use laptops for all of their
school work. They are part of a pilot project the Dur-
ham District School Board started last school year,
having students with learning disabilities use com-
puters to do their work throughout the day.
Right now, there are five schools participating in
what the board calls assistive technology classes.
“It evens the playing field for them,” said Greg
Island, principal of Blair Ridge Public School in
Brooklin, which has had a class for two years.
The students chosen for the class are kids who are
high functioning, but need to have one area of their
learning tweaked, he said.
“These are students that have a very specific learn-
ing style,” he said.
Besides Blair Ridge there are also classes in ses-
sion at Alexander Graham Bell Public School in Ajax,
Vaughn Willard in Pickering and Dr. C.F. Cannon
Public School and Queen Elizabeth Public School in
Oshawa.
Since the students have been using the laptops
there has been a noticeable boost in their self-confi-
dence, he said.
“We’re seeing kids feel better about what happens
in class.”
Mr. Pittman’s students range from grades 5 to 8. In
the morning they have language and math lessons
with Mr. Pittman, in the afternoon they study differ-
ent subjects with other teachers in the school, taking
their computers with them.
“The nice thing is they become technology leaders,”
he said.
The kids use programs that translate speech into
text and another that reads scanned pages out to stu-
dents.
One particular Friday afternoon, students are work-
ing independently. Some are wearing earphones and
staring intently at their screens while the computer
reads the page to them. Some are working on a pro-
gram called Smart Ideas, making a diagram compar-
ing fiction to non-fiction.
Many wear headsets. They are used so the students
can hear the text being read to them and so they can
speak into the microphone and have their words
translated into a document.
“The kids become independent learners,” he said.
Mr. Pittman said he tells his class their laptops are
tools the way his eyeglasses are.
“If I didn’t have my glasses, I wouldn’t do my job as
well,” he tells them.
It’s the same way for their computers. They aren’t
there to do the job for them, just make things more
understandable so the students can do their work, he
says.
Because there are only a few classes in the school
board, students such 12-year-old Erik Ramsey are
bused from outside Blair Ridge’s regular boundaries
to attend the class.
“It’s hard to leave your old friends,” he said, adding
that it will be hard to leave his new friends when he
EDUCATION
Durham classes use technology
to help with learning
returns to his home school.
The idea is that when Erik goes back, he’ll take his laptop
with him and apply what he’s learned with Mr. Pittman to his
Grade 7 work next year.
He likes the laptop because he can do his work without
worrying his teachers won’t understand it. His writing can
be messy because of his learning disability, he said.
“I can read books that I didn’t think I would read,” he said.
“It’s pretty awesome.”

Spring is fi nally here! Now is the perfect
time to rejuvenate your lawn, spruce up your
garden with nutrient-rich soil, and make your
dreams of expanding your living space into
the outdoors a reality. Arnts Topsoil, The
Landscape Supplier has been the source for
landscaping supplies in the Durham Region
and GTA for over 40 years.
Using a high quality Topdressing soil is the
key to a green, healthy lawn you can enjoy
through the summer and fall. Topdressing
and seeding your lawn will keep your turf
thick which helps it resist insects and weeds.
Arnts Topsoil's Topdressing is a fi ne blend
of Sandy Loam, Peat loam for moisture reten-
tion, Composted Manure for nutrient value,
and Composted Pine Mulch Fines to lower
the pH to an optimum growing range. Begin
by raking the lawn to remove thatch. Spread
a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of Arnts' premium Topdress-
ing soil on your existing lawn. Spread grass
seed (several choices are available depend-
ing on the application site), rake lightly, and
follow with a deep and infrequent watering
schedule. Early morning is the best time to
water the lawn.
Adding fresh Triple Mix soil to your gar-
dens each spring gives your plants a good
boost to start the growing season. But not all
Triple Mixes are created equal. Arnts Topsoil
understands the importance of having a good
soil foundation for a garden. Arnts' Triple
Mix Supreme Planting Soil is composed of
just the right blend of quality ingredients to
form the basis for a fl ourishing garden.
In addition to a wide variety of soils and
aggregates, Arnts Topsoil also provides the
best selection of natural fl agstone and rock-
ery, decorative gravels, interlocking paving
stones and garden walls, slabs, curbs, steps,
and much more. This extensive product se-
lection, combined with an abundance of
visual displays, inspires creative ideas for
distinctive landscape designs. Helpful staff,
brochures and videos, Do-It-Yourself Semi-
nars, and services such as delivery, and free
estimates on products are available to help
you through every step of your project.
Arnts will be hosting a free Do-It-Yourself
UNILOCK seminar demonstrating the in-
stallation of interlocking pavers and garden
walls. Join us on Saturday, APRIL 30TH at
10:00 a.m. at the Whitby location - 4400 Halls
Road North (East of Lakeridge off Taunton).

DURHAM -- Think of a jazz fan
and the image of a 50- or 60-some-
thing adult comes to mind.
But students from across Durham
go against the grain, not just loving
the music but playing it and show-
ing a high level of musicianship.
“It’s different from other kinds
of music,” says Vincent Jef-
fery-Pacheco. “It’s smooth and
clear and has a nice feel to it.”
The Grade 8 student at Sir Wil-
liam Stephenson Public School in
Whitby plays bass in the Durham
Elementary Jazz Band.
The band was awarded gold
standing at the Southern Ontar-
io Jazz Festival earlier this year
and received an invitation to the
MusicFest Canada nationals in
Vancouver later this month. A May
4 fundraiser at Class Act Dinner
Theatre in Whitby, virtually sold
out, is to help pay for the trip.
Band co-director Nicole Henning
says it was “kind of a shock” for the
band to get the invitation, unusual
for an elementary band. But she
and co-director Andrew Cohen,
both instrumental music teach-
ers, are no longer surprised at the
band’s level of play. Henning says
the students’ commitment is what
amazes her most.
“We give them a piece of music
and they come back the next day
and know it,” she says. “They all
want to be in the band for a variety
of reasons. It challenges them.”
Henning says the band start-
ed two years ago and there are 13
members, with all but two in Grade
8, who practise together two hours
per week. The DEJB tackles jazz
standards, Latin jazz, ballads and
all kinds of traditional jazz. Audi-
tions are typically held at the end
of September and the band’s home
base is West Lynde Public School in
Whitby.
Vincent started playing bass
around three years ago, reasoning
that “everyone plays guitar” and
many bands search for a bassist.
When he heard about the DEJB, it
sparked his interest in jazz and he
auditioned. Vincent says his play-
ing has improved a lot since the
beginning of the year. Practising at
home and with the band has helped
his skill level take a big jump in the
right direction.
“The way that we work on things
and the way that we practise things
really helps a lot,” he says.
Naved Quame, who attends
Romeo Dallaire Public School in
Ajax, was chosen by a teacher to
attend a summer camp after he
showed potential.
“My interest in music grew and
I just fell in love with it,” he says. “I
just like the feel of (jazz) and how
all the instruments blend in.”
Naved likes big band jazz, espe-
cially Count Basie. Learning the
trumpet wasn’t as hard as he
thought it would be and Naved is
now branching out: he’s started
learning piano and guitar and is
interested in taking up the bass.
He hopes to attend Pickering
High School next year and to con-
tinue improving.
As the band gets tighter each year,
so do the bonds between the indi-
vidual members.
“It’s amazing how you can meet
so many new people and find peo-
ple you share interests with,” Vin-
cent says.

FOOTBALL
Foster running with the Lions
Ajax resident
looking to make big
plays for CFL team
NATHANIEL SMITH
nsmith@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- As he runs down the field
draped in coverage, many doubt
he’ll come up with the football.
But with his 6-foot-5 frame, brava-
do, and unwavering resolve, Ajax
resident Akeem Foster locates the
football and catches it for a touch-
down.
The jubilation from touchdowns
fuels Foster and it’s something he
looks to continue while playing in
the Canadian Football League.
Dominating on the football field
came easy for Foster throughout
high school, OVFL and the CIS, but
when he stepped onto the British
Columbia Lions practice facility, it
was a feeling like no other.
“You go from playing with boys
to playing with men,” he said. “As a
boy coming into the league you’ve
got to mature, get bigger and stron-
ger.”
After struggling to get acclimat-
ed to the speed of the professional
game, Foster wasn’t able to make
the immediate impact he had
hoped for, but with a year under
his belt, and a rigorous off-season
workout plan, he hopes things will
change.
“You got to step up training every
day and make yourself better day
and night,” said Foster. “You got to
go to bed wanting to get better and
that’s what I’ve been focusing on.
I went up to Saint FX to train and
finish up school, and hopefully my
training there with my family and
friends will work out this year.”
Foster dominated CIS football for
the St.Francis Xavier X-men, and in
his senior season he placed himself
among the best players in Cana-
da after registering 37 catches, 595
yards and four touchdowns. Now
Foster is waiting for his chance to
make a difference at the next level.
“I’m a very confident guy, I want
to make the play and want the ball
in my hands,” he said. “I want a
chance to help out my team and
organization. Hopefully the BC
Lions give me the opportunity to go
out there and put on an orange hel-
met and black pants, so I can be all
I can be out there.”
Through it all Foster is excited
about competing with pros on a
consistent basis.
“In the CIS you’re competing
with a bunch of guys on one com-
mon goal to be the best nation-
ally,” he said. “Making that jump
to the CFL was a really fun experi-
ence because you get the opportu-
nity to compete with guys that have
been there before, and get yourself
prepared to compete on a national
level.”
Every time Foster puts on his
football equipment he thinks about
how far he has come from catching
touchdown passes for Notre Dame
Catholic high school in Ajax, and
for the Oshawa Hawkeyes in the
OVFL, to playing on the highest
football stage in Canada.
“You dream about that stuff, that’s
why you work, and that’s why you
go out there and play the game so
one day I’ll be on TV catching the
football and my friends and family
can say ‘Hey, I know that guy,’” said
Foster. “It’s definitely a dream come
true and I’m just trying to make this
dream happen, so I’m going to go
out there and do my best for every-
body, not just myself.”
When Foster steps onto the field
he wants players, coaches, trainers,
and fans to know one thing about
him.
“I’m a man with a lot of heart
and I go into every battle expecting
to win, and at the end of the day if
you’re not on my team you’re not
going to win.”
ONTARIO JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
Panthers looking for gems at rookie camp
BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Rob Toffoli knows
that as a bottom feeder for the
past four seasons, the Pickering
Panthers can only go one way.
“There’s only one way to go
and that’s up,” said the GM as the
Ontario Junior Hockey League
team prepares for its rookie camp
Monday to Wednesday at the
Pickering Recreation Complex.
As many as 68 skaters and 12
goalies are expected to report for
the sessions, which will include a
pair of games each night between
four teams from 7:30 to 10:30
p.m.
Coming off a season in which
the Panthers won just 14 times
in 50 games, finishing last for the
fourth year in a row, the camp will
go a long way in identifying pros-
pects for next season’s roster. At
this point, Toffoli isn’t restricted
to a cap of how many players will
be invited back to a main camp.
“A lot of them have a shot
because we finished in last place,
so I’ve got to do what we’ve got to
do to improve the team,” he said.
“I’m going to acquire some other
players from other junior teams.
Some of that is in the works now,
but there are spots open.
“I want to look for kids who are
going to compete. I don’t care if
they’re 95s or 92s (birth years). I
want kids who can compete and
play at this level. That’s what we
have to get.”
Toffoli added that last year’s
youngest players, Brett Gustavsen
and Andrew Goldberg, both 94s,
played a lot. In fact, Gustavsen
joined the Ottawa 67’s of the OHL
when the season ended for the
Panthers.
As for attracting young players,
or veterans for that matter, it’s an
uphill battle for the Panthers and
one of the challenges that Toffoli
admits is difficult to overcome.
“That’s one of the harder jobs,”
he says. “We’re a very positive
team. The coaching staff is posi-
tive, (owner) Rob Stein is posi-
tive, I’m a positive guy. We want
to get better communications
with schools so we can promote
the kids more. If they come to our
team, they are going to get a shot
to play.”
Off the ice, Stein has bought out
former owner John Porco, and on
the bench, the Panthers will have
an entirely new staff. Toffoli and
Stein have brought in head coach
Mike Galati to give the team a
fresh start. He will be surround-
ing himself with his own assis-
tants, as none of last year’s bench
staff will be returning.
“I wish all the guys luck. Believe
me,” said Toffoli of last year’s
coaches John Goodwin, Patrick
Papageorge and Derek Lynden.
“But we were a last place team so
we had to do something.”
As for returning players, Toffoli
says the new bench boss is meet-
ing with the group on an ongoing
basis, and thus far, nobody has
asked to be traded.

VOLLEYBALL
Eclipse 15U displays dominance at provincials
Qualify for
Western National
Championships
in Calgary
WATERLOO -- The Eclipse
15U girls’ volleyball team
played as a cohesive unit
and captured the provin-
cial championship after
defeating the talented
Scarborough Titans Syn-
ergy 15-4 in the tie break-
ing game at the Ontario
Provincial Championship
held at Rim Park in Water-
loo.
Both teams battled for
championship supremacy,
and split a game each (25-
23, 18-25), but the Eclipse
prevailed after realizing
how close they were to
attaining championship
status.
Before getting the
opportunity to step onto
the championship stage,
the Eclipse had to defeat a
slew of quality opposition
in day one and two of the
tournament. After domi-
nating teams from Strat-
ford, Halton and Ottawa,
the Eclipse earned a first
place position in their
pool.
In day two Eclipse main-
tained their aggressive-
ness and focus and over-
whelmed Forest City
from London, DRVC from
Whitby, and Storm Ice
from Aurora en route to
another first place finish
in their pool.
In the final day of the
tournament the Eclipse
focused on the words ‘win
or go home’ and imple-
mented it towards their
game.
With the fear of going
home prematurely imbed-
ded in their minds, the
girls outplayed the Etobi-
coke Titans in the quarter-
finals and Toronto West in
the semifinals.
With the impressive vic-
tories the Eclipse marched
all the way to champion-
ship glory, proving they
deserved to be the num-
ber one ranked team going
into the Ontario Provincial
Championships.
In May team Eclipse
will look to capture a gold
medal in the Western
National Championships
held in Calgary.
Team members include
Cassis Varlow, Chanel
Raymundo, Courtney Chi-
asson, Emily Ryan, Jazmin
Shannon, Karlina Domin-
go, Katerina Yannakid-
is, KC Tohm, Kiana De La
Cruz, Nareesa Nathoo,
Sabrina Robertson, Sheri-

Success on the track for Pine Ridge Puma athletes
PICKERING -- The Pine
Ridge track team competed
in the first annual Lynx-Titan

ondary School in Whitby.
Despite the cold and rainy
weather, several Puma ath-
letes came away big winners
on the day.
Leading the charge for Pine
Ridge were Emma Kiku-
lis and Mona Tang Higgins,
who each won two individ-
ual events.
Kikulis won the senior
girls’ high jump and remains
undefeated on the season in
that event. She also compet-
ed in the triple jump for the
first time and finished first.
Mona Tang Higgins won
the 100m and 400m hurdle
events in personal bests.
In the Midget division,
newcomers Keith Euraj and
Tia Thevenin were each vic-
torious in the 200m sprint
posting impressive times.
Other fine performanc-
es were turned in by Jayden
Brown, Tenisha Wilmot and
Chantel Malcolm. Brown
finished second in the senior
boys’ 100m in a seasonal best
time of 11.46 and Wilmot
finished second in the 80m
hurdles in a personal best
time of 13.42. Malcolm fin-
ished second in the senior
girls’ 200m sprint in a sea-
sonal best time as well.
Finally, the 4x400m team
of Chantel Malcolm, Domin-
ique Goddard Harte, Emma
Kikulis and Mona Tang Hig-
gins cruised to an easy vic-
tory in the final event of the
day.

Loving Husband, Father and Friend
James Burgess
May 9th, 1953 ~ April 29th, 2010
Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away
into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of
solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household
word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect
Without the trace of a shadow on it
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolutely unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you
For an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner - All is well.
We will never forget you.
You will be in our
hearts forever.
