AJAX -- Some homes and businesses in a portion of Pickering Village were evacuated after a natu- ral gas line was cut Thursday afternoon. The incident happened around 3:25 p.m. in the area of Old Kingston Road and Windsor Drive. There was a smell of natural gas in the area. At our press time, Ajax Deputy Fire Chief Michael Gamba said they were “waiting for a heavy construction crew (from Enbridge Gas) to come in and dig it up and plug the line.” Ajax fire personnel added at the time they expected it to be 60 to 90 minutes before the leak was plugged. Mr. Gamba said it’s pos- sible the line was cut by a crew working on the recon- struction of Old Kingston Road. There was a limited evacuation in the imme- diate area. Motorists in a nearby plaza were told not to start their vehicles for a short period of time. “Natural gas is explo- sive, so it’s a precaution,” Mr. Gamba said of clos- ing Old Kingston Road from Elizabeth Street to Windsor Drive. The timing couldn’t have been worse for busi- nesses. Simone Szauter, of Sauter’s Inn, said the restaurant was about to start its busy time. “We’re losing money here.” Beth Bianchi of Bead Rock noted, “This is rush hour and people pop in all the time.” Margaret Campbell, owner of That Chocolate Shoppe in the Village and The Pickering Village Ice Cream Shoppe, both of which are located in the Courtyard, said, “It was a perfect day for ice cream. We were making a killing.” AJAX -- Some homes and busi- nesses in a portion of Pickering Village were evacuated after a natural gas line was cut just after 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. TM Man arrested following domestic dispute, police confrontation PICKERING -- Durham police Tasered a man during a domestic call in Pickering Monday night that sent one cop to hos- pital with a non-life-threatening injury. A teenager called police for help about 8:40 p.m. after a man known to him broke into a home armed with a metal pipe, looking for a particular female. The woman had fled the home, located in the Valley Farm Road and Finch Ave- nue area, and was safely inside a neigh- bour’s home, police said. A male victim inside the home was assaulted, and property extensively damaged. Police say they were confront- ed by the suspect upon their arrival. Both officers were threatened and one officer was assaulted, requiring medical treat- ment for a non-life-threatening injury. A police cruiser was struck, resulting in minor damages. Police used a Taser on the man, who was arrested without further incident. The suspect was injured during an assault inside the home before police arrived and required medical attention at a local hospital for his injury, which police say was also non-life-threaten- ing. A 36-year-old man faces a number of charges including breach of probation, break and enter with intent to commit assault, four counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of threatening death or bodily harm. A German shepherd was removed from the shed, described as “deplorable” living con- ditions, and taken to a veterinary clinic for assessment and treatment. The dog was later euthanized due to its severely compromised health. “In this line of work, we see many unfor- tunate things but to witness such intention- al cruelty and the deliberate infliction of so much suffering on an animal is heartbreak- ing,” says Debby Houghton, animal cruelty investigator with the Humane Society of Dur- ham Region. Two individuals from the Oshawa area have been charged under the Ontario SPCA Act with permitting distress. The first court appearance is scheduled for May 10. The humane society would release no fur- ther details, and withheld the names of those charged. Police have now charged a man in connection with the botched heist, at the Once Upon A Child outlet on Bayly Street. On April 4 at about 6 p.m., a man armed with a knife demanded cash from the female employee, who managed to dial 911 before fleeing with another worker and two customers to the rear of the store. A 911 operator heard the robbery in progress and dispatched Durham cops, who were unable to find the suspect. Almost a week later, on Sunday, the female victim recognized the sus- pect hanging around a retail plaza and called police. Officers arrived and arrested the suspect without incident. Glen Miller, 47, of Burcher Road, Ajax, faces robbery and weapons charges. Door-to-door water system salesmen not from Durham DURHAM -- People going door-to- door selling water treatment systems are not connected with Durham Region. The Region has received calls from residents about sales representatives sell- ing water filtration systems, implying they work for the Region. Some have even claimed to be meter readers. Greg Lymer, the manager of techni- cal support in the Region’s works depart- ment, said the representatives have asked to conduct an in-house water test and, according to complaints, then use aggres- sive sales tactics and claim the testing is mandatory. “We want residents to know that all staff of The Regional Municipality of Durham must carry official identifica- tion. If you have doubts, call the Region and ask if we’ve sent someone into your neighbourhood,” Mr. Lymer said. Regional staff don’t go into private homes to test water, unless asked by the resident, and Durham doesn’t sell or endorse water filtration devices, Mr. Lymer added. It’s not the first time these sales tac- tics have been used before to sell water filtration systems, he noted. The Region provides safe drinking water, meeting or exceeding all provincial drinking water standards, Mr. Lymer stat- ed. “Our water is safe to drink,” said Mr. Lymer. “Residents on the municipal water supply system are provided with safe drinking water of excellent quality. We encourage residents to call in and report unsolicited water filtration sales represen- tatives to our technical support staff.” For more information or to report a complaint, call the works department at 905-668-7711, ext. 3488. That means no friending on Facebook, no following on Twitter, sharing videos and photos through sites such as YouTube and Flickr, texting or even sharing personal e-mail addresses, says the report from the Ontario College of Teachers. Given that social technology is a big part of our culture, the report didn’t recommend teachers avoid it altogether. Instead they were advised to use the school’s social net- works and e-mail addresses to interact with students and to notify parents if they would be interacting with students through social media.Above all else, they were advised to maintain a professional tone at all times. The advice seems common sense and among my acquaintances who are teach- ers, none are friends with their students. One teacher even goes so far as to use an old nickname as her Facebook username, as opposed to her real name, in order to avoid having to decline Facebook invitations. Another uses just her first name and middle name. Even those who use their real names have unsearchable profiles. Still, even on anonymous profiles the col- lege advises teachers to be transparent and disclose their profession and to avoid online criticism of students, colleagues and their employers.A cursory news search shows there are numerous reports about teach- ers getting in trouble for content on their Facebook pages or Twitter accounts, rang- ing from racy photos and videos to unkind comments about the students they teach. In some cases the damaging content was leaked from locked-down private accounts. And those are just the ones reported in the media. I imagine the number of teach- ers who have been quietly cautioned is even higher. The issue was bound to be addressed at some point. Locally the Durham public school board is working on a social media policy that’s currently at the committee level and expected to come to the board soon. This is likely an issue all school boards across the country will have to tackle. With the recommendations from the Ontario College of Teachers, it seems teach- ers in general are being held to a higher standard than the general population, but at the same time their job means they’re in a unique position of trust with students. They’ve always been held to a higher stan- dard of professional conduct because of the influence they have over young lives. In fact, there are other professions that need respectful barriers with the people they serve. Police officers and victims of crime come to mind, as do medical profes- sionals and patients. The problem is that it’s tough to maintain those barriers in our technology-saturated world where the information disseminat- ed about us can come from any number of people with a laptop or a cellphone, and when social networks are such a big part of how we interact with our friends and family, And like teachers who were formally cau- tioned, all professionals really have just one option with social media: beware. --Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. Contact her on Facebook, Twitter (@ rszekely) or e-mail at rszekely@durhamregion.com. Campaign donations and the questions they raise in Durham Reka Szekely Friending and following students a no-no for teachers Questions raised this week about Oshawa MP Colin Carrie distributing more than $2,000 in political campaign donations in the run-up to last fall’s municipal election might make great political hay, but don’t speak in any way to subversion or a co-opting of the dem- ocratic political process. Mr. Carrie’s office confirmed this week that the incumbent Conservative MP donated to eight separate municipal campaigns in Oshawa, including that of Mayor John Henry. That has raised questions at city hall and among local candidates currently running against him in the federal elec- tion, and even inspired a conspiracy theory or two on Facebook. It’s true that such donations are most often seen by the electorate as tainting the process. Politicians of any stripe in Durham Region concerned about optics should consider that, even though they are well within rights to financially sup- port candidates they believe are of a like mind, or who can further important agendas. Federal NDP candidate Chris Buckely raised the optics issue this week, sug- gesting a sitting MP “shouldn’t be get- ting involved like that.” Yet, he also acknowledged that he wrote a letter of endorsement for a can- didate in last fall’s municipal election. The approaches may be different, but the effect is the same. And both are per- fectly legal. In the same context, the issue of devel- oper donations to municipal election campaigns throughout Durham Region raises similar questions. But again, there are clear rules in place that govern lim- its and regulate transparency. Further- more, donations and campaign expens- es are made part of the public record for everyday citizens to peruse as they wish. Whether individual voters -- or candi- dates -- agree is a matter of conscience. If, as a voter, you oppose donations from developers or those from sitting MPs, you can exercise your authority at the ballot box. These are the rules set out in duly passed legislation. They acknowledge, through the donations process and its regulatory limits, that it costs money to win a seat in government, whether municipal, provincial or federal. It’s not perfect, certainly, but is an established and acknowledged method of raising political funds. Those who choose to make donations must follow the rules that currently exist. If a majority of voters determine that it’s wrong, regardless of what the law says, they’ll have their opportunity to let can- didates know what they think come elec- tion day. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 15, 20117 P Give and Receive 905-421-9550 1050 Brock Rd Pickering (Brock Rd, South of 401) 905-509-5578 300 Kingston Rd Pickering (Gates Plaza @ Altona) www.curvespickering.com Curves Circuit with ZumbaAvailable Food or cash donation required to local food bank determined by club. While the doors enter- ing council chambers have a sign that says no cellphones are permitted, and a security guard keeps a watchful eye out for offenders in the pub- lic gallery, Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles says it’s time council- lors start playing by the rules. He says any time he looks down the row of his colleagues, it’s com- mon to see them looking at their phones, possibly checking their e-mails, while members of the pub- lic or fellow councillors are talking. “We’ve got to show more courtesy our way,” he said. He plans to bring a motion for- ward at the council meeting on Monday, April 18 to control their use. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. and will take place at the Pickering Civic Complex, One The Espla- nade. baydays 3. 40% OFF Women's fashion by BIANCA NYGÅRD, PETER NYGÅRD, ALLISON DALEY and INVESTMENTS 4. $38.88 LEVI'S® men's denim Styles 501, 505, 516 and 550.Reg. $70 and $75 1. Prisque recalls being a young- ster and drawing superheroes on large sheets of butcher paper. He took four years of art in high school, but with getting a job, getting married and raising a family, his art took a back seat. He retired four years ago and has been able to devote much more time to painting. Landscapes are a favourite subject and he likes to go out and take photos that he will transform into acrylic paintings. In his early efforts, Prisque says it was more about painting what he saw in the photograph. How- ever, with experience, he now interprets a scene on the can- vas. “I really enjoy realism; I find it very rewarding,” he says. “I haven’t been able to get into abstraction.” But he does mix it up a bit, doing the occasional portrait and varying and experimenting with technique, using a knife at times to apply paint, for exam- ple. He joined ACA while living in Pickering and is a regular at the club’s Wednesday and Thursday painting sessions. “I really like the interaction with the other artists and the camaraderie,” Prisque says. “It keeps me motivated. We kind of help each other out when we need a little help.” He believes an artist should always be striving to improve. Prisque is showing five or six paintings in the show, all creat- ed within the last six months. “Every year I try to put in some- thing new,” he says. Most of his recent paintings are of scenes in Algonquin Park and the Tobermory area. The ACA show runs April 15 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., April 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and April 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show and sale is at the Village Community Centre, 22 Sherwood Rd. W. THEATRE Whodunit farce starts run in Pickering MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Hitchcock references abound in Wrong Window. Herongate Barn Theatre presents the comedy whodunit’s Canadian premiere to May 21 in Pickering. “The main spoof is on Rear Window but there are several references to other Hitchcock movies,” says Kelly-Anne Moss of Pickering, who plays Midge. She says the William Van Zandt and Jane Milmore play is set in New York City in the summer, where some pretty ordi- nary people find themselves in some extraordinary circumstances. Marnie has just moved back to live with her husband, Jeff, and she likes to get out the binoculars and snoop on her neigh- bours. Having drinks before going out to dinner, they overhear their neighbours engaged in a loud and boisterous argu- ment in an adjacent apartment. “That starts the hilarity,” Moss says. She’s been doing theatre most of her life and comes by it honestly as she grew up in a household where both mom and dad were very involved in theatre. Moss graduated from “a very tough” music theatre performance program at Sheridan College where, in her year, 7,000 people auditioned. She says 42 were accepted and just 18 graduated. Not only was Moss one of the 18, she received the Rosemary Burns Performance Award. Most of her theatre work has been with Herongate. However Moss notes that her father has a small theatre group and she has performed at Christmas concerts and in spring shows. She says the Wrong Window set is almost a part of the cast as the audience can see from one apartment to another through the window. In addition to Moss, Wrong Window features Daryl Marks of Pickering, Jac- queline Bocking and Peter Bocking of Whitby, Geoffrey Coulter and Elizabeth Holden of Oshawa and James Creighton and Paul Francies of Stouffville. Herongate is at 2885 Altona Rd., between Taunton and Whitevale roads in west Pickering. For tickets and more information, visit www.herongate.com or call 905-472- 3085 or 1-866-902-9884. The former J. Clarke Richardson Storm shoot- ing guard burst onto the scene in high school with his wide array of offensive moves and pro- duction to catch the attention of scouts. Look- ing for more exposure, Johnson transferred to West Hill in Toronto to hone his skills and fur- ther develop his game. After his productive tenure in West Hill and consistent summer play for the AAU Toronto Mission, which is a select team for the nation’s top players, Division-I schools in America began making offers to the Toronto native. The sudden attention didn’t faze Johnson, who was looking to pick the right Division-I school. “I played against the best of the best, West Hill is known for basketball and a lot of great play- ers went there like Rowan Barrett and Denham Brown,” he said alluding to the former NBA duo. “We were playing in front of scouts right away so the exposure and attention was really good.” After careful consideration, Johnson took a Division-I offer from Long island University in New York. “They were the one school that showed the most interest and I have so much family in New York,” he said. “I liked being in the city and my cousin ran track in Long Island, so I felt really comfortable with the school.” Johnson went to a school that had strug- gled throughout the years and posted a 9-21 record the year before he arrived. Along with three other freshmen, Johnson helped turn the program around. This year they won the NEC tournament championship and conference title after posting a 27-5 regular season record. Their stellar play earned them a berth in the NCAA March Madness tournament as the 15th seed. They were pitted against the No. 2 seed North Carolina Tar Heels, and ultimately lost 102-87 to the NCAA powerhouse. Through it all, Johnson was thrilled with the once-in-a-lifetime experience to compete against a program with so much history and potential NBA prospects. “A lot of people dream of going to North Car- olina growing up,” he said. “It was great to see how you match up against those guys because they are looked at as one of the top teams in the country.” Johnson was also surprised at the skill level of talented Tar Heel freshman Harrison Barnes, who figures to be a top NBA prospect next year. “Harrison Barnes is big and very skilled,” said Johnson. “I was very shocked that he was that skilled, playing him in person.” Although Johnson was disappointed with the loss to the Tar Heels he was proud of his accomplishments and how far he has come. “I wasn’t always on the radar like some of the other Canadian prospects,” he said. “I’m one of those guys that put in the work, and peo- ple can look back and see I accomplished a lot being a four-year starter for my school, having a chance to win a conference title, and going to the NCAA tournament and actually getting a chance to play a lot.” Johnson, who is graduating this year, leaves the school with many impressive accolades including scoring more than 1,000 career points, which places him in the top 10 for the school’s all-time scoring list. The former Blackbird is currently train- ing and looking to hire an agent to get a job as a professional basketball player overseas or wherever his talents lead him. He also has aspirations of playing with team Canada in the future. With his journey still incomplete, Johnson hopes to leave a legacy. “I just want to be known as a player that’s hard working, and a winner.” Nathaniel Smith is a co-op student from Durham College SUBMITTED PHOTO AJAX -- Former J. Clarke Richardson Storm and current Long Island Blackbird, Kyle Johnson, hoisted the NEC tournament championship trophy after his team was victorious, qualifying them for the NCAA March Madness tournament. Ajax forward led Durham Lords OSHAWA -- The Ontario Col- leges Athletic Association has selected Durham College men’s basketball student-athlete Eric Smith as its 2010-11 male athlete of the year. Smith, a third-year forward from Ajax, had a season to remember at Durham. He aver- aged a double-double in 20 reg- ular-season games, leading the OCAA with 432 points and 206 total rebounds. He scored at least 30 points in a game three times, and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career. In addition to these stellar num- bers, Smith was second in the OCAA with 94 free throws and sixth among all players with 56 assists. The law and security stu- dent was named the OCAA men’s basketball player of the year for his efforts. Smith earned 11 double-dou- bles throughout the season, including one in an 84-76 vic- tory over then No. 1 nationally- ranked Algonquin in February. It was Algonquin’s only loss during the regular season. In Durham’s final six games, Smith averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. The Lords won five of six games to finish with a regular season record of 15-5, good for second place in the OCAA East and their first berth into the OCAA men’s bas- ketball championship tourna- ment in 12 years. Durham lost to Fanshawe in the OCAA quarter- finals. Smith scored 22 points in a 79-67 loss. Durham hosted the Canadi- an Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball championship where the Lords finished in eighth place. Smith once again averaged a double-double with 47 points and 31 rebounds in three games on the national stage. Some of Smith’s other accom- plishments in 2010-11 include: OCAA Athlete of the Week; OCAA First-Team All-Star; CCAA All- Canadian. HOCKEY OJHL continues to reduce teams BURLINGTON -- For the second consecutive sum- mer, there have been some major changes to the structure of the Ontar- io Junior Hockey League. At the top of the list is another round of con- tractions, with three teams being decommis- sioned, while one other, the Streetsville Derbys, recently merged with the Cobourg Cougars. For the Cougars, it’s the second off-season in a row that they’ve been in the middle of the merg- ing process, having done the same thing about this time last year with the Bowmanville Eagles. Meanwhile, the three teams that are part of this year’s contraction are the Collingwood Blackhawks, Dixie Beehives and Oran- geville Flyers, teams that combined for 33 wins in 150 games last season, 24 of which were earned by Orangeville. With these changes, coupled with the paring down last year, the OJHL has lopped off a quarter of their teams since the end of last season and may not be done, according a source within the league that spoke on the condi- tion of anonymity. Rumors abound that another team -- possibly the Milton Icehawks -- may be on the chopping block. Whether it’s Milton or another organization, fur- ther contraction would fall in line with the league’s hope to get down to some- where in the range of 24 to 26 teams. While details are still emerging regarding the amount of money paid out to owners who put their club’s up for contraction, one source guessed the figure to be in the range of $150,000 per team, to be paid out over a few years. The number couldn’t be confirmed though, as owners are apparently still in the dark as to what exactly the fees were that were paid out during last year’s round of cuts. The good news for fans in Durham Region, it appears, is that both the Whitby Fury and Pickering Panthers are expected back in the league next season. PICKERINGPICKERINGPICKERINGPICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURE Spring is finally upon us, and now that the snow has melted away, we can take a good look at our yards and start making plans on how to best enjoy them all summer long. For many homeowners and business, the Spring brings two main concerns: cleanup from the winter and making sure the grass is in good shape. Zylstra Landscape Service can help with both! With over 20 years in the landscape industry, Jamie Zylstra opened Zylstra Landscape Services this year, which offers landscape services for residential, commercial and industrial. The Spring clean up includes removing any plants that have died over the winter, pruning, litter will be picked up and removed, raking any leaves left over from the Fall and preparing the gardens for the growing season. If your lawn looks like it may have suffered over the winter, a call to Zylstra Landscape can have it looking its best! They offer Spring aerating and over seeding as well as lawn dethatching to help your lawn soak up the rain and help it grow. You can also help your lawn continue to thrive all season long with fertilization and weed control programs offered by Zylstra. Spring is also a great time of year to call Zylstra for an overall property assessment. Jamie and his team will look over your lawn, gardens and plants and determine the best way to maintain them or will offer suggestions on what can be done to improve your yard. Gardens can be refreshed with soil amendments and mulch, new annuals and perennials can be planted, and trees and shrubs can be planted or pruned. New gardens can be created, walkways and patios can be built and new sod can be laid. Between work, family commitments and summer road trips, it can be hard to keep up your yard while also having time to enjoy it. Instead of spending the small amount of free time you have mowing the lawn and picking weeds out of the garden, have Zylstra Landscape take care of it for you! With their weekly maintenance packages, you can rest assured that your lawn and garden are looking great without having to lift a finger. In the winter, you can also leave your shovel in the garage, as Zylstra Landscape Services offers snow removal services for both residential and commercial properties. PICKERING -- After miss- ing the OMHA playoffs in the Lakeshore League, the Minor Atom A Pickering Panthers entered the GTHL Pro Hock- ey Life/King Clancy Tourna- ment as a way to keep the players’ hockey skills strong for the two months until try- outs. The Panthers started this six-week tournament by beating the Cooksville Phan- toms 9–2. Their winning ways continued through the round robin with a shutout against the Credit Valley Wolves and victories against the Harbor- view Huskies, Richmond Hill Stars, Hillcrest Canadiens and Scarborough Ice Raiders. With a tie against the Toronto Penguins and only two loss- es, the Panthers found them- selves in third place with 13 out of a possible 18 points and a record of 6-2-1. In the quarter-final play- offs, the Panthers faced the Credit Valley Wolves. How- ever, the outcome would not be a shutout, as in their first meeting. This match was forced into overtime with the tilt going to Pickering 4-3 on a goal by Alex Ielo. As the tension built to see who would be their next opponent, the team pre- pared with practices and the Pickering tournament. Unfortunately, the team as swept at home. The fate of any more hockey wins was based back in the GTHL with a semifinal game against one of the teams the Panthers lost to in the round robin, the Toronto IceDogs. Pickering went down 1-0 in the first period. Hopes went up when a shot from Ethan McArthur went in at the buzzer to tie things up but the official ruled it no goal. In the second period, McArthur made sure to tie the game, when the IceDogs goalie gloved the puck and it went over the line. Later in the game, Joey Povolo netted the winner, advancing the Panthers to the final against Vaughn. The championship game was excellent hockey but Vaughn went on to win the game 2-0. Pickering ended its 2010/2011 season on a high note with the silver medal. Goaltender Michael McInnis was named Pickering’s MVP for the final game and these players showed that you can finish at the top with deter- mination, desire and a whole lot of heart.
