Nearly one month after 2011 bud- get talks began, Pickering council has approved the budget, meaning home- owners living in a semi-detached home assessed at $350,970 will pay about $31 more this year, or $1,317. Staff originally proposed 4.75 per cent on March 10, and then 3.56 per cent. When most councillors still found it too high, Mayor Dave Ryan challenged them to bring a list of budget items to cut to the next meeting. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dick- erson and Ward 1 Regional Councillor Jennifer O’Connell met the challenge, both offering a list of about $250,000 of cuts on April 4, to bring the tax ratio down by about half a percent. Coun. O’Connell’s plan included reductions in the areas of mayor and council salary increases, staff salaries, computer hardware replacements, and the office of sustainability. She said her goal wasn’t to come up with a magi- cal number for the tax ratio, but to find ways to make the budget responsible. Coun. Dickerson’s plan included decreasing expenditures in the library and the office of sustainability, and deferring some capital projects, such as a new fire hall sign and new council chamber chairs, to 2012. His plan also stipulated that if there is a savings on the capital projects in the budget, staff put the deferred items back in on a priority basis. CAO Tony Prevedel explained Coun. Dickerson’s list met the financial target without cutting programs and suggest- ed council go with his plan. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean supported both plans, and felt the two could be combined to reduce the tax increase to 2.5 per cent. Council ended up taking Mr. Preve- del's advice and supported Coun. Dick- erson's work. Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles pointed out staff and council will scruti- nize numbers as projects go forward. “The scrutiny and the wise spending doesn’t end here,” he said. Despite Coun. O’Connell, Coun. McLean and Ward 3 Regional Council- lor Peter Rodrigues voting in opposi- tion, both the $45.6-million current and $25-million capital budgets were passed with four votes. CITY Pickering council passes budget The scrutiny and the wise spending doesn’t end here. Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles If I were Prime Minister... Less than 525 people earned $100,000 or more last year, down from the 614 of the year before. The Durham Regional Police made up the bulk of the big earners, as 308 officers and staff topped $100,000. That, however, is down from the 405 in 2009. Matt Gaskell, Durham’s Commissioner of Human Resources and Corporate Servic- es, says the decrease could be attributed to employees working fewer overtime hours. “If there’s a broad distribution of overtime, not as many people will get bumped up over $100,000,” he says. “It’s an issue of more equitable distribution of overtime.” The top earner for the Region was Dr. Rob- ert Kyle, the chief medical officer of health. He made $299,837.55, up from the $284,117.95 in 2009. Following behind was chief administrative officer Garry Cubitt, who made $297,273.97. That’s an increase over the 2009 total of $292,249.51. Chief of Police Mike Ewles made $230,327.20, a drop from the 2009 total of $237,951.82. Regional Chairman Roger Anderson made $180,537.73, a decrease from the previous year of $186,339.98. Every March 31, the provincial government releases the names and salaries of people receiving compensation from public funds. This includes municipal workers, teachers and school board administrators, hospital employees, politicians at the provincial and municipal level, and police officers. The Sunshine List, as it is known, was first released in 1996 for anyone earning $100,000 a year or more. The limit has remained at $100,000. Mr. Gaskell says it’s time to raise the limit on public salary disclosures, noting $100,000 “is still a good sum, but it’s not the same as in 1996.” The $100,000 in 1996 would be $136,000 now, he adds. “To be meaningful for the public to have a window into the compensation package for the public sector” the limit has to be raised, he notes. “It needs to be adjusted.” For a complete list: VISIT www.ontario.ca (go to finance department, look for salary disclosure link) April 4 -28, Monday -Thursday Port Perry, ON www.greatblueheroncasino.com Must be 19 years of age or older to participate. Allegations a trustee was not a Catholic or a separate school ratepayer while she was a school council chairwoman, made at February’s meeting, were with- drawn. “It was unfounded,” said Oshawa Trustee Theresa Corless after the meeting. Whitby Trustee Mary Ann Martin, who made the notice of motion, stepped down from her position as vice chairwoman of the board at Monday’s meeting. Board chairwoman Kathy LeFort, trustee for Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog, also left her positions as chairwoman. B o t h stated they were stepping down for personal reasons and based on principles. Trustee LeFort did not return a request for further com- ment and Trustee Martin refused to comment further. The notice filed at the February meeting said the board should censure the member who “seri- ously breached board policy and made misleading claims of being a separate school supporter and a Catholic over a number of years.” At the time, Trustee Martin was tight lipped about who the alle- gations were about but when the notice of motion was made, Trust- ee Corless told This Week she was consulting a lawyer. At Monday’s meeting, Trustee Corless presented the board with a letter from the City of Oshawa’s manager of revenue and taxation stating residences belonging to the trustee over the past 18 years have always had the taxes allocated to the English separate schools. Later in the meeting, Trustee Martin withdrew her notice of motion. “I’m pulling the notice of motion as the information has been pro- vided,” she said. Pickering Trustee Jim McCaf- ferty was elected as the new board chairman. Oshawa Trustee Stan Karwowski was named vice-chair- man. Both were uncontested to their new positions. After being acclaimed, Trustee McCafferty read from a statement. “There have been many distrac- tions over the past four months,” he said, adding that some have strayed from their purpose as trustees. He said trustees must start to lead by example and face the current challenges facing them together. At the end of the meeting, Trust- ee McCafferty offered an apology to Trustee Corless on behalf of the board. “I would like to apologize to you and your family for any distress from the accusations against you,” he said. After the meeting, Trustee Cor- less said she thought the apology should have come from Trustee Martin, who had left the meet- ing before Trustee McCaffer- ty expressed regret on behalf of the board, but was pleased it was made regardless. “The truth came out,” she said. Oshawa’s beloved Generals have their work cut out for them if they are to topple the Niagara IceDogs in Ontar- io Hockey League conference semifi- nal action. The Generals, running with the momentum of a five-game victory over the Kingston Frontenacs last week, split wins with the IceDogs during reg- ular season action, and also face a top prospect in netminder Mark Visentin. His stingy 2.52 goals against average during regular-season play will require the ambitious young Generals to mus- ter creative ways to find the back of the net. And though the IceDogs finished the season with six more wins than our Gens, the two squads remain fairly equal on power plays and penalty kills. Again, on paper, this series should go the full seven. But it won’t if the hometown crowd has its way. The pressure of playoff hockey might be new to some of these Generals, but the fans have been here before. They know well the thrill of seeing it through, the payoff that comes with endurance and tenacity, the inexpli- cable way momentum in a game can change with one bad pass, or a well- timed hit. To those fans -- both those who have been cheering from the start and those who climbed aboard the bandwagon last week -- we call on you to bring your energy and passion to the series. You’ll have your first chance at home this Saturday when the Generals host the IceDogs in Game 2 of the series. It will be an important game either way, with a win by our Generals either eve- ning it up, or pushing the Dogs into a two-game hole. The General’s fan base across Durham Region has a rich tradition and a deep and abiding love for and commitment to its hometown OHL hockey team. This year’s squad has provided a solid season, led by coach Chris De Piero, and some impressive play by the likes of Christian Thomas, Andy Andreoff, Boone Jenner and others. Collectively, this group and this season has given the city more reason to cheer. And now, more than ever, they could use the intangible arena magic that is sometimes found in the presence of a supportive, loud and committed fan base. Bring your voices, bring your ban- ners and bring your mojo. Let’s send those IceDogs home with their tails between their legs. For many of us, social media is, as the name implies, simply about being social. That means chatting with our friends and family members on Facebook or following people related to our hobbies, politics or the entertainment industry on sites such as Twitter and YouTube. Compared to the streams of fun photos and quippy posts on Facebook, LinkedIn (linkedin.com) with its crisp white back- ground looks pretty bland. But folks who are serious about their careers and busi- nesses should spend a little bit of time set- ting up a LinkedIn profile as well. Personally, I’ve had a LinkedIn profile for a while, but I haven’t paid too much atten- tion to it. In my line of work, I usually cut to the chase and call people if I need to speak to them in a professional capacity and for more personal stories, I might try Face- book if I’m having trouble connecting. But the site now has more than three mil- lion users in Canada. Still small compared to more than 18 million Facebook profiles for folks listed in Canada, but LinkedIn is growing and it’s clearly the best place for professionals to network online. That includes people looking to grow their businesses through networking, job searchers looking for contacts in their industry and people simply looking to keep their finger on the pulse of the local business community. It’s easy to add your first set of connec- tions; the site can search your e-mail and match them to e-mails registered with LinkedIn. It then prompts you to add those users as connections. Once you have the first set of folks added, simply list the places you’ve worked and where you went to school and you’ll likely get a number of connection requests. Now, one of the best things about Linked- In is it shows you the degree to which peo- ple are connected to you, not unlike a pro- fessional version of the game of six degrees of Kevin Bacon. So, for a person you connect with direct- ly, that’s a first-degree connection. A per- son not connected to you, but connected to one of your connections, is a second- degree connection. This means it’s easy to find that common connection who can provide an introduction to a potential cli- ent or employer. Another powerful aspect of LinkedIn, particularly for job searchers, is the rec- ommendation feature where people you are connected to can write a recommenda- tion for your profile. I’ve noticed that most folks don’t write recommendations lightly because they’re publicly tying their repu- tation to the person they’re endorsing, so a good recommendation from a respected person can go a long way. I have no doubt that when companies screen potential employees they take their LinkedIn profiles into account and, in fact, LinkedIn now has a job search function which will suggest postings based on the content of your profile. All said, LinkedIn is very useful, though it isn’t nearly as fun as Facebook. But then neither are our professional lives when compared to our personal lives. --Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. LOCAL BREAKING NEWS, SPORTS, PHOTOS, VIDEO AND WEATHER >> On April 23, the new Ajax-Pick- ering chapter will hold its first meeting in the O’Brien Room at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex. “We’re looking for people to come out with energy and enthusiasm to make it a mean- ingful organization locally,” said chapter chairman Steve Camp- bell. Mr. Campbell, an Ajax resi- dent, explained the ABCs of CARP are ‘advocacy,’ ‘benefits’ and ‘community.’ CARP gets involved in a number of social advocacy issues and strives to ensure financial security, access to health care and freedom from discrimination for ‘zoomers.’ The group keeps an eye on Canada’s pension plan, for example, and most recent- ly weighed in on what was in, or left out of, the 2011 Ontario budget. Mr. Campbell has been a national CARP member for about a year and decided to work on starting up a local chapter last summer. “There wasn’t anything out this way,” he said. He sits on the Rouge Valley Health System’s community advisory committee, and is the past chairman of the Ajax Envi- ronmental Committee. Through his network, he was able to find others interested in forming an Ajax-Pickeirng chapter of CARP. Now that the chapter is in Ajax-Pickering specifically, CARP will be able to focus on issues that are important to zoomers locally. “We want to encourage more people to look into CARP,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to be involved in your community, have a voice in local and nation- al issues,” he said. Volunteers give their time, skills, and energy to all kinds of causes all year round. To thank them and increase the public’s awareness of their contribution, National Volunteer Week will be held from April 10 to 16, 2011, and will focus on the theme “Volunteers: passion, action, impact”. It is hard to imagine life in our communities without the efforts of the 12.5 million volunteers across Canada who give their time so generously to any number of causes. Their work benefi ts com- munity services, shelters, hospitals, sports teams, political movements, volunteer fi re services, and the environment, to name just a few. Whatever role they choose to play, they are pillars in their communities, important agents for social change. They are citizens who contribute to the well- being of the local population. During this thematic week, many volunteer centres, charities, and non-profi t organizations take care to honour these gen- erous-hearted people. No matter how organizations decide to thank their volunteers, we should all take the time as individuals to show our appreciation of those who devote themselves to good causes. As the season changes from winter to spring, everyone is eager to get out and enjoy the warmer weather, outdoor spaces and tackle the “to–do” lists that have been growing over the winter months. Here's a list of spring safety reminders from Enbridge Gas Distribution: Safety in the Yard When planning projects that require dig- ging, such as planting a tree or building a fence, remember that natural gas and other utility lines could be buried in your yard. It's the law to locate buried natural gas lines before you dig. Contact Ontario One Call at 1–800–400–2255 or www.on1call.com at least one week before you start. After you call, they'll come out to your property to locate underground lines, mark them and leave a locate sheet providing instructions on how to safely proceed. Make sure you landscape carefully near gas meters and regulators. Never raise the level of a garden so that soil touches your meter or regulator. Doing so could result in corrosion and cause a gas leak. Safety by the Pool Before pool season gets into full swing, it's the perfect time to have your pool heater serviced. Pool heaters, like other fuel–burn- ing equipment, need to be maintained regu- larly to work safely and effi ciently. Contact a licensed heating, ventilation and air condi- tioning (HVAC) contractor for service and questions. Safety before you Barbecue With grilling season around the corner, it's a great time to review your manufacturer's instructions for the maintenance and use of your barbecue. For many of us, the barbe- cue has been out of use for the winter, so it's also a good time to give it a thorough inspection. Safety in a Flood Spring showers and melting snow can in- crease the possibility of water main breaks and sewer backups. With your safety in mind, never enter any fl ooded areas. If you're experiencing a fl ood, don't attempt to restart your natural gas appliances until you've had them inspected. Natural gas ap- pliances (including furnaces, boilers and water heaters) that have been submerged, partially submerged, come into contact with water, or had their gas controls or electrical cords come into contact with water are con- sidered unsafe and must not be used until inspected by a licensed HVAC contractor. Remember – always call your local gas utility if you smell natural gas or suspect damage to natural gas equipment due to fl ooding. President Barbara Hunt says in the previous two conferences, attendees relished the opportuni- ty to get concrete feedback from experts on improving their writ- ing. “They love taking workshops from great teachers and actu- ally learning hands-on things,” she says. “We don’t have talk- ing heads; we set that out from the very beginning. We wanted people to be able to take things away.” The April 30 conference fea- tures workshops and speakers and ends with The Festival of Authors in the evening. The pens and laptops are put away for the latter, as it’s a time to network and enjoy some food in a cafe-style setting. The festival also offers author readings, a chance to mingle with Canadian authors, editors, agents and publishers, draws and a slew of vendors selling writing and related products. “Our vision is to educate, connect and inspire, that’s our motto,” Hall says. “We’re all volunteers. We’re doing it for the passion we have for writers and the writing community.” The workshops include Thou Shalt Not Tell with Ray Robert- son, on how showing is the basis for all good writing. Two workshops are considered advanced, with the afternoon ses- sion featuring Robert J. Wierse- ma. Wiersema in November released the novel Bedtime Story. He’s the keynote dinner speak- er and is speaking on the state of Canadian publishing, his writing process and telling stories of his adventures in the field. Wiersema is also reading at The Festival of Authors. A popular aspect of the festival introduced last year is back. Blue pencil ses- sions allow a writer to sit down for 15 minutes with an editor, one-on- one, to get feedback on three pages of work. Whitby’s Heath- er O’Connor is a free- lance journalist who writes for magazines and newspapers. She also writes fiction and is working on a novel for young adults. O’Connor attended a blue pen- cil session last year and says when she left “my feet barely touched the ground. “All her feedback was positive,” O’Connor says. “I was expecting criticism, that’s what you go for, right? I was waiting for the other shoe to drop.” But that didn’t happen, and when she was asked if the work was finished, O’Connor knew that meant she was interested in the book. It’s almost finished and O’Connor plans to send it off. Hunt says close to 150 people attended last year and the target for 2011 is 175 people. The conference is at the Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facil- ity, 2700 Audley Rd. N., (north of Taunton Road), Ajax. For those who don’t want to spend a whole day at the con- ference, Hunt says people can attend the cocktail hour, dinner with a dinner speaker and The Festival of Authors for $85. Pre- registration is required. If you’re not attending the con- ference but want to check out the festival, it starts at 7:30 p.m. and the cost is $10 at the door. Learn more and see the sched- ule at www.thewritersconference. com. EXHIBITION Sean Rowley’s photographs on display See the Ajacian’s work at the McLean Community Centre AJAX -- Check out Sean Rowley’s photographs at the McLean Community Centre. The Ajax resident is showing his work until April 25. And if you like the outdoors, this show’s for you. Rowley was interested in photography as a teen- ager and, with virtually no formal training, found his way in the field, planning canoe and camping trips with photos in mind. The McLean is at 95 Magill Dr., at Westney Road, Ajax. It’s open to the pub- lic daily and there’s no charge to see the exhibition. CALL FOR ARTISTS Oshawa art group looking for entries DURHAM -- The Oshawa Art Asso- ciation is gearing up for its 43rd Annual Juried Show. Admission to the event is free and donations are welcomed. For more information, contact Hedy- Gadd@hotmail.com. MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Durham’s thriving theatre scene is cause for celebration. The second Durham Theatre Festival does just that, with plays and more April 13 to 24. There’s even an opportunity to pay tribute to the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, at an Open Mic night on his birthday, April 23. It’s at The Courtyard, 1437 King St. E., Courtice (just east of the Oshawa border), at 8 p.m. You can read a sonnet, a soliloquy or even get some friends together to act out a scene from one of his works. “Last year surprised us at how well it went,” says founder Michael Khashma- nian of the festival. “The big surprise last year was the high school involvement, not only putting on a performance but writing and directing the plays.” The trend continues this year with three Ajax high schools and Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa hosting festival events. And continuing the theme of involv- ing youth, Durham Improv presents The Teen Improv Tournament on April 16 at 10 a.m. at Class Act Dinner Theatre in Whitby. For details on registering a team, visit www.durhamimprov.com or call 647- 899-3342. The public can watch and tick- ets are $16 for adults and $12 for students. Visit improvtournament.eventbrite.com for advance tickets. Khashmanian is also a playwright and two of his works are a part of the festival. An Urban Lady in the Wild has a unique concept. “We’re doing more than just a play with this,” he says. “We put out a call to artists back in Janu- ary and had them submit paintings on the theme, An Urban Lady in the Wild. A dozen paintings resulted and there’s an art exhibition throughout the festival at Ontario Shores for Mental Health Ser- vices, which is incorporated into the pro- duction. For the first 45 minutes, there’s a lavish reception with a wine bar and hors d’oeuvres. The audience then proceeds to the on-site theatre where they enjoy the play, which is centred around the paint- ing. Three paintings were chosen to be a part of the play, with one on stage for every performance. Khashmanian says the comedy is about an artist whose lavish lifestyle has caused him financial difficulties. If you’re interested in what goes on behind the scenes at a production, Oshawa Little Theatre is hosting open house tours April 16 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Or you can attend the Meet the Direc- tors’ Brunch, an event limited to 40 seats, to enjoy a buffet lunch and have a Q and A with all of the festival directors. It’s April 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Trillium Trails, 53 Snow Ridge Crt., in north Oshawa (just north of Raglan Road off Simcoe Street). The fun gets under way April 13 with the kick off at The Dubliner in Whitby at 6 p.m. There will be a live band, draws for free tickets and festival speakers. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 8, 201117 AP Keep your copy in a convenient spot and refer to it often! The former Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos receiver made the announcement last week through his Facebook page, call- ing it quits after 10 seasons in the Canadian Football League. “I have given my official retire- ment notice to the Eskimos and the CFL. After 10 great years, I am now energized and inspired to go in a new direction,” the 32 year old stat- ed in the post. “I want to thank the Argonauts and Eskimos organiza- tions, all my teammates and oppo- nents over the years and, most importantly, all the fans who root- ed me on and who will continue to motivate and inspire young players of today. “I am forever grateful.” Words of thanks and congratula- tions soon poured in on the page from fans, former teammates and those Talbot lined up against over the years. Drafted by the Argonauts follow- ing his university career at Wilfrid Laurier, Talbot spent the first nine seasons of his career in the dou- ble-blue before a trade sent him to Edmonton where he played last season. After battling injuries in his first few seasons, Talbot put together a career year with the Argonauts in 2008, catching 76 passes for 915 yards and earning Toronto’s nomi- nation for the CFL’s top Canadian award. Injuries got in the way of building on that career year, however, as he missed most of the 2009 season. Last year in Edmonton, the for- mer high school quarterback at Paul Dwyer caught 27 passes for 301 yards. Pickering resident part of Canadian team seeking 10th gold medal BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com MICHIGAN -- Jenn Wakefield’s climb up the international lad- der of success on Canada’s national hockey team just went a step higher. Following a selection camp in Toronto earlier this week, the Pickering resident was named to the Canadian team that will compete at the IIHF women’s world championships in Swit- zerland from April 16-25. The 21 year old has played with the national program a number of times, including four times with Canada’s entry into the 4 Nations Cup. This will serve as her first world championship. With her past experience, she is in that transition phase with the program, where she expects to make it, but is still surprised when she gets the call. “It’s a bit of both,” she says of the expectations and subse- quent relief. “I feel like there are so many good, older players and young players that are pushing the envelope. It’s always a nice surprise to know that you are being selected to the national team.” Wakefield is coming off a stellar year as a junior transfer at Bos- ton University. She registered career highs in both assists (22) and points (54), and matched her career high in goals (32). Her 32 goals and 54 points set single-season program records for the Terriers, as she recorded at least one point in 30 games. “I’m very happy,” she says of her first season after transfer- ring to Boston from New Hamp- shire. “The team welcomed me really well being a transfer stu- dent. Everything fit into place and I had a great time.” As far as team success, Boston, ranked third, advanced to the NCAA championship game, los- ing to top-seeded Wisconsin 4-1 after upsetting second-ranked Cornell 4-1 in the semifinals. “When I look back, we had a really good season, but it would have been really nice to win. You never want to finish second,” says the psychology major, with a minor in education. Wakefield is one of four play- ers from Boston University on Canada’s team that is prepping for the worlds, including New- castle’s Tara Watchorn who, like Wakefield, just completed her junior year of eligibility. The others are graduate Catherine Ward and freshman Marie-Phil- ip Poulin. “We have a great program,” at Boston, siad Wakefield. “Our head coach (Brian Duro- cher) and two assistants coach- es (Katie Lachapelle, Allison Coomey) have done a great job this year preparing us to play for our national team.” Wakefield and her Canadian teammates are in Michigan until the weekend when they depart for Switzerland April 9 in search of their 10th gold medal all-time at the worlds. Canada opens the tournament April 16 against Switzerland, with preliminary round games against Kazakh- stan and Finland. The medal round begins April 23. STEVE MCLAUGHLIN / BU ATHLETICS PICKERING -- Pickering’s Jenn Wakefield, who led her Boston University team to the national champi- onship game, will play for Team Canada at the World Championships in Switzerland from April 16-25. Wakefield off to Worlds with Canada It’s always a nice surprise to know that you are being selected to the national team. Himself included. The soon-to-be 24-year-old forward from Pickering has gone from his hometown Pan- thers to Lake Superior State and now the American Hockey League as a member of the Syracuse Crunch, all within the span of five seasons. Not bad for a kid who grew up in town, long- ing to play for the Panthers and one who was by-passed during his OHL draft year before latching on with the Panthers and earning his NCAA scholarship. And if Schofield has it his way, before long he’ll end up on the roster of the NHL’s Ana- heim Ducks where he has signed a contract for next season. “I always dreamed of it, playing in the NHL. Even in junior when I didn’t think there was a big shot, it was something I thought about and something I wanted to do,” he said in a recent interview from Syracuse, where he is playing for the duration of this season. “I guess you could say I didn’t think it was pos- sible but now it is and it’s great.” A solid scorer dating back to his days with the Panthers, Schofield has managed to find the net at a decent rate in the AHL so far, scor- ing three times and chipping in five points for the Crunch in eight games. One of the goals was a game winner in front of family and friends at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto against the Marlies. “Getting the opportunity to play has been nice. And being able to play good and help the team out has been great. It’s a great feel- ing,” Schofield said. That great feeling is an extension of every- thing Schofield has experienced since finish- ing his season at Lake Superior. After the year ended, Schofield returned home and started fielding inquiries from interested NHL clubs. While he didn’t divulge the others that showed interest, Schofield said a lot of thought went into his decision to ink a deal with the Ducks. Not the least of which includes their histo- ry of success when it comes to fitting college players into their system, guys from the likes of Dustin Penner to Andy McDonald and Chris Kunitz, among others. “I talked a lot to David McNab, the senior VP of hockey operations in Anaheim, he’s been there since ‘93 and they have a great track record of signing college free agents and giving them a good chance to play,” said Schofield, attempting to explain his reason- ing behind inking with the Ducks. “He said I fit their style of play and I think that’s really important to come in and fit the style of play because you’ll get a good chance to move up here to the NHL. That was a big reason why I chose the Ducks.” Schofield said he tried to get input from as many friends and family members as pos- sible, but in the end was satisfied he made the decision he alone was most comfortable with. “I felt like my best opportunity to move up to the next level and develop as a hockey player was to sign with Anaheim.” In the interim, Schofield has three games left in Syracuse before the end of the regular season, two against Norfolk and one at Her- shey. Though he seems so far removed from his days with the Panthers, it’s a time not lost on Schofield. “I had a great opportunity in Pickering, the place I called home. I am glad I had the opportunity to play there,” he said. PHOTO BY KEVIN COLTON TORONTO -- Pickering’s Rick Schofield recently signed a contract with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. As part of the deal, he is finishing this season with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 8, 201121 AP Look for our flyer in today’s paper! Only in selected areas. Annandale men’s team of Gord Norton, Warren Les- lie, Michael Bryson and Wesley Forget teamed up with Chris Van Huyse, Tim March, Patrick Janssen and Tyler Anderson to win the regional playdown at the York Curling Club on April 2. They advanced to the pro- vincial finals held at Annan- dale Curling Club on April 3. The two Annandale teams won their semifinal, and played to a tough loss in the Ontario final against teams from the Brockville Country Club. It was a matter of inch- es to settle two teams fight- ing for 10 ends each for the men’s Dominion Regalia Sil- ver Tankard. The OCA women’s Tankard Ontario finals were played at the same time and a pair of teams from the Uxbridge Curling Club won that event. Four youngsters from the Annandale Curling Club went to the Timbits pro- vincial elementary school curling bonspiel in Min- den March 30 to April 2. There were more than 80 teams from across the prov- ince competing. The four students also represented their Gandatsetiagon Public School. The team consisted of Riley McMulkin, Daniel Cousins, Scott McMulkin and Christopher Retz. The boys won one game and lost three and were then elimi- nated from the bonspiel. They all look forward to competing again next sea- son. The elimination draws for the competitive men’s club championship start- ed March 29 and continue until Tuesday, April 12. The Thursday Mixed League was also playing down and fin- ished April 7. The closing bonspiel at Annandale is the annual men’s Last Chance slated for April 16-17. The conveners presently have 29 teams entered, and for a full draw, need three more. Call Dave Hutchison at 905-683- 1796 to place an entry or for more information. The Ontario champions team consists of skip Glenn Howard with Pickering resi- dent Richard Hart at vice, and Craig Savill and Brent Laing playing front end. The team traveled west to the Victoria Curling Clas- sic March 31 to April 3 and won the event and collect- ed $22,000. The last event on their calendar is the Grey Power players’ cham- pionship in Grande Prairie, Alberta April 12-17. It culmi- nates the World Curling Tour season, and is important for team rankings toward the Olympic playdown invites. FIGURE SKATING Buttle to headline Skate With A Star OSHAWA -- Jeffrey Buttle, who won gold for Canada at the 2008 world championships, will be the feature attraction at Saturday’s Skate With a Star, an event being brought to the Cam- pus Ice Centre in Oshawa. There are several benefits to having new windows and doors in your home. First, they improve the overall look of your house and increase its value. New windows and doors are also much more energy efficient, which means you can keep your heating and air conditioning inside, reducing your monthly bills. It may be tempting to pick up some windows and install them yourself, but you may find that you’re not getting the highest quality windows and the installation is trickier than it seems. Even if you buy the best windows on the market, if they are not installed and sealed properly, they essentially become worthless. “If a window or door is not installed properly, you can get drafts coming into the house,” explains Wayne Hutchinson, owner of Durham Windows and Doors. “I often get calls from people who have tried to install windows themselves or have used a friend or family member to come out and fix the installation.” Homeowners can save themselves the cost and trouble by having their windows and doors done properly the first time. Specializing only in windows and doors, Wayne and his staff have earned a reputation for their great work. Wayne will come to your house to measure and will bring with him samples of the windows that he has available. Not only can you shop from the comfort of your own home, but you can also see exactly how the windows will look. “After being in this business for 34 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Homeowners may also be tempted to hire a company that is willing to work under the table. The problem is that while they may save money short-term, it could cost them everything in the long run. If a worker is not insured and gets injured in your home, you are liable. Fly by night companies also won’t be around to honour warranties or help with any issues that come up. All of the installers at Durham Windows and Doors are staff, not subcontractors, are fully insured and have their WSIB certificates. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King Street West in Oshawa. For more information, please call Wayne at (905) 579- 2222 or 1-888-576-8575.
