Michael Gainer of the Friends of the Ajax-Pick- ering hospital spoke to Pickering council March 21 and gained unanimous support for a plan that’s been in the works for a number of years. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Jennifer O’Connell introduced a motion that council support the Friends’ request that the Central East Local Health Integration Network explore the possibil- ity of a single hospital corporation for all of Dur- ham Region. That would mean the Ajax-Pickering hospital severs ties with the Rouge Valley Health System and joins the Lakeridge Health Corporation. The former Ajax and Pickering General Hospi- tal joined Centenary Hospital and became part of the Rouge Valley Health System in 1999. Longtime Pickering residents and volunteers Kevin Cahill and Grant Bridge will host the second annual St. Paul’s On-The-Hill Community Food Bank Golf Tournament on Wednesday, June 22 at Glen Cedars Golf Club in Claremont. They’re looking for spon- sors to give the tournament the shot-gun start it needs to raise money for the food bank that serves Ajax and Pickering. “We’re looking for a title sponsor,” Mr. Cahill said. They’re looking for a couple of donors to contribute $5,000, and a special sponsorship package for $1,000 will include a foursome and a hole sponsorship. It’s $150 per player, and on top of the golf, the day includes lunch, a steak dinner, a power cart and prizes, which will be awarded for the closest to the pin, the longest drive and in a putting contest. Mr. Bridge explained initial costs for the tournament are expen- sive and, “The whole purpose is to raise money for the people using the food bank.” Last year, the food bank saw an increase of more than 18 per cent of people using it, Ms. Coulter said, and fed 7,100 people through- out 2010. St. Paul’s has even increased its hours of service to keep up with the rising demand. “I don’t expect them to drop,” she said of the numbers. Mr. Cahill said it’s “extremely touching” that the food bank is solely run by volunteers, adding it relies on local support. “It’s the community that steps up all the time,” agreed Marg Jocz, the food bank’s assistant director. Longtime St. Paul’s supporter Mayor Ryan has thrown his sup- port behind the tournament, and said he’d like to see it take place each year. “As long as the food bank is needed, the golf tourna- ment will be needed,” he said. The mayor specifically acknowledged the Pickering Squash Club, as its members contributed a great deal to the tournament last year. Last year’s tournament raised $15,000, enough money for St. Paul’s to replace its outdated fridge to continue handing out fresh eggs, milk and produce -- a rare service for a food bank. It’s also in the market for some new industrial freezers. “We’ve been living with hand-me-downs,” Ms. Jocz said. Salman Farooq, 35, of Woodbridge, was arrested outside his home on Wednesday. Farooq, whose full name is Salman Farooq Sheikh, had until recently been the Tory candi- date in the Pickering-Scarborough East riding. He has been charged with 14 offences in what Toronto police describe as a wide-ranging case of identity theft, credit-card fraud, stolen and forged cheques and fraud related to mortgages obtained in people’s names without their knowledge. Police say that the crimes date back to 2007, when a home was fraud- ulently purchased with a mortgage that had been fraudulently obtained. In December 2009, police allege that credit- card data was improper- ly used to buy three busi- ness-class airline tickets worth thousands of dollars. In April 2010, police allege that three men conspired to open a false business account with a financial institution, using a fraudulent cheque. That attempt was thwarted, police say, and no money was lost. -- Torstar news service SALMAN FAROOQ CRIME Former Pickering Tory candidate arrested on fraud charges COMMUNITY Tee-ing off for Ajax-Pickering food bank SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND PICKERING -- Co-ordinator Kevin Cahill, honourary chair- man Mayor David Ryan, St. Paul’s on the Hill food bank director Rae Coulter, and co-ordinator Grant Bridge are promoting a golf tournament to support St. Paul’s on the Hill food bank. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 1, 20114 P Be a borderline bad influence. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean isn’t alone. Mayor Dave Ryan also feels coun- cil should be more transparent to the public when it comes to accepting gifts such as tick- ets to sporting events, concerts, golf tourna- ments and galas. But the two don’t agree on how that should be implemented. Coun. McLean was one of Pickering’s regional councillors offered box seats and transportation to a Toronto Maple Leafs game at the Air Canada Centre from Run- nymede Development and Tribute Homes. The two developers could potentially build on 1,200 hectares of controversial land in northeast Pickering. The Province had rejected the Region’s plans for development, and it’s currently before the Ontario Munici- pal Board for an appeal. Coun. McLean and Regional councillors Jennifer O’Connell and Peter Rodrigues are openly against the development, and have turned down the hockey offer. “I sort of thought, ‘That’s strange that they’d do that,’” Coun. McLean said. Runnymede president John Kaplan con- firmed in an e-mail “that Runnymede/Trib- ute, as part of its normal business practice, sometimes attends and sometimes hosts social events. We invited Regional Council- lors and the Chair from Durham Region to attend a Leafs game with us on March 29th. We believe it is important to have respect- ful relationships with Councillors and other stakeholders, wherever we do business, regardless of whether or not they agree with us all the time.” Mayor Ryan said the invitation didn’t surprise him since it’s quite common to build business relation- ships in a causal atmosphere. “There’s nothing wrong with an open business relationship that often has a social component associated with it,” he said. The annual Mayor’s Gala, for example, is sponsored by developers and other mem- bers of council are invited, he said. Mayor Ryan’s and Coun. McLean’s opin- ions differ on a council code of conduct as well. Mayor Ryan had formed a task force on accountability and transparency con- sisting of community members, includ- ing former MP and Whitby councillor Judi Longfield and Metroland Durham Region Media Group editor-in-chief Joanne Burghardt, in 2007. The group had created a council code of conduct, which included rules regarding accepting and dis- closing gifts. When the matter came to council in 2008, it was simply received for information and couldn’t be reintroduced for the rest of the term under the Municipal Act. Coun. McLean said at the time and still insists that since former councillor Bon- nie Littley and Mayor Ryan sat on the task force, despite the other “upstand- ing” people on it, the document wasn’t objective. “To develop a proper code, it has to be non-political,” he said. Mayor Ryan said he’s “incensed by the hypocrisy” that some councillors are opposed to accepting hockey tickets offered by developers, yet they wouldn’t entertain the task force’s document. “I think it’s political grandstanding,” he said, adding he knows for a fact all members of council have attended sponsored events such as galas and golf tournaments. Coun. McLean said he has attended such events in the past but “I think it’s a little more extravagant when they’re sending a car for you.” The councillor has tried a couple of times throughout 2011 budget deliberations to set aside $30,000 for an integrity commissioner to keep council in line, but it was rejected both of times. Mayor Ryan said he’s “not prepared to sup- port a motion to spend $30,000 to create something that’s already been created for free.” Coun. McLean agrees the City can’t afford to hire one on a full-time basis, and said the commissioner would work on a fee-per-ser- vice basis. While the councillor isn’t ready to give up his plan, Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles is re-working the document by the mayor’s task force and intends to bring in to council for consideration this term. All content copyright Editorial Opinions Last month Twitter celebrated five years of condensing our lives into 140 characters or less. It was a big milestone for the microblog- ging site, given that only a small number of social networking sites ever last that long and it’s become the ninth most popular place to go online. But as the social media service ages, the question becomes, is Twitter becoming less social? A recent Yahoo Research study found that 50 per cent of tweets consumed came from just 0.05 per cent of Twitter users, an elite group of about 20,000 people. The study made the determination by looking at the links in 260 million tweets. As to who these 20,000 users are, they mainly fall into four categories: media, celebrities, organizations and bloggers. The study also found that while regu- lar Twitter users were following these elite folks, they were mainly following each other. So celebrities follow celebrities, bloggers follow and interact with bloggers and so on. In the case of corporations and media organizations, they’re pushing out infor- mation as opposed to interacting with their followers. For example, the Toronto Star (@torontostar) has almost 32,000 fol- lowers, but is only following 71 people. Frankly, that’s no more social than the six o’clock news. I recently spoke with a friend who’s been on Twitter for more than a year and she was telling me she rarely posts, but regu- larly checks her account. She went through her list of folks she follows and there were only a handful of friends, but numerous celebrities. On the other hand, on Facebook she has dozens of friends who she interacts with on a daily basis. In fact, a Korean study of Twitter shows that two-thirds of Twitter users who follow people don’t have anyone following them. That simply means people are using Twit- ter as a source of information as opposed to a place to interact. Facebook, on the other hand, requires the people you friend to friend you back in order to establish the friend relationship. All this has a real practical impact; busi- nesses are finding that a link shared on Twitter is less likely to get clicked through than a link shared on Facebook. Recently, mashable.com looked at how many clicks they were getting through links shared on the two popular sites, with Facebook generating an average of 3.31 clicks per share while Twitter only gener- ated 0.38. My guess is part of the reason is that Twit- ter posts disappear off feeds much more quickly than Facebook posts, and also Facebook has more users. But with all that, I would imagine any link on Twitter would get more play if it was shared by members of the elite 20,000. So when it comes to information, Twitter is a great way to be instantly in the know. But when it comes to socializing, it’s much better to be a friend than a follower. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. It began last month with a baseless notice of motion issued at a meeting that held little detail but had devastat- ing potential and saw a spirited defence by the focus of the motion, Oshawa Trustee Theresa Corless. It ended this week with a withdrawal of the notice of motion and the resignations of Whitby Trustee Mary Ann Martin as board vice-chairwoman and Uxbridge Trust- ee Kathy LeFort as chairwoman. The allegations involving Trustee Corless -- who received a public apol- ogy this week from replacement chair- man Jim McCafferty -- served only to hijack important board business and bruises the board’s otherwise solid rep- utation. The controversy is centred on the erroneous belief by Trustee Martin that Trustee Corless, contrary to board pol- icy, “seriously breached board policy and made misleading claims of being a separate school supporter and a Cath- olic over a numbers of years.” It appears none of the allegations con- tained a shred of truth. Trustee Corless presented board members this week with a letter from the City of Oshawa confirming that residences belonging to the trustee for nearly two decades have always had taxes directed to the Catholic board, as per board policy. This is an important lesson in the con- sequences of rushing to judgment, and in casting aspersions while neglecting basic research. Did anyone informally ask Trustee Corless to address allega- tions that were brought -- in error -- to fellow trustees? A simple request could have averted an official confrontation and subsequent retreat by the authors of the motion. The Catholic school board in Dur- ham Region has too many important issues before it -- the extension of all- day kindergarten and wraparound pro- grams, achieving a balanced budget, and providing quality education while celebrating and promoting the faith -- to focus on these sorts of counterpro- ductive adventures. The formal apology from Chairman McCafferty surely provides comfort for Trustee Corless, but a similar public apology from those behind this base- less distraction should also be forth- coming. Only then can the board get past this issue and move on to confront the issues before trustees. -- Metroland Durham Region Media Group durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 1, 20117 AP PICKERING -- Police have released a photo of one of the suspects believed to have tar- geted a Pickering woman in a distraction theft two months ago. The suspects approached a woman and her daughter and asked for directions, distracting them with a map, Durham police said. During the interaction, the woman’s wallet was stolen from her purse. She was unaware of the theft until she returned home, police said. The woman’s debit card was used in an unsuccessful attempt to withdraw cash from a Pickering automated teller machine, police said. Neither Rouge Valley nor Lakeridge would comment on the matter. The motion noted Durham’s population is projected to grow at more than twice the rate of any other community within the Central East LHIN, and residents will expect a broad range of medical services close by. It also said a Durham Region focus will improve fund- raising from all three government resources in Durham. “When we’re competing for the political powers that be, it can be easy for the Ajax- Pickering hospital not to get its fair share,” Coun. O’Connell said. Mr. Gainer said in an interview afterward that the big push for this idea came in 2008. “The baseline of it was the mental health crisis,” he said. Rouge Valley moved its mental health inpa- tient unit to the Centenary campus after a peer review found the hospital system was in severe debt. The move caused an uproar in the Ajax-Pickering community. There was a similar situation in 2005 when Rouge Valley considered moving the Ajax obstetrical and pediatric services to Centenary. LHIN spokeswoman Katie Cronin-Wood said the LHIN’s goal is to create an integrat- ed system of care, and it’s not determined by which buildings the hospitals have, but how the service providers work together as a sys- tem. “The goal is that the local residents ...have the most timely access to the services they need, regardless of the name or governance of the organization,” Ms. Cronin-Wood said. She noted services in Durham and with- in the LHIN are improving already, and said Rouge Valley and Lakeridge Health have a strong partnership among themselves and other hospital organizations. She said Lak- eridge Health Oshawa being designated as a stroke centre for the area is one of many ways services have been integrated among Central East LHIN hospitals in the past five years. Aside from Pickering council, the Friends has received support from the Town of Ajax, the Township of Uxbridge and the City of Oshawa. The Friends will next seek the Region of Durham’s support before making a formal proposal to the LHIN. Ms. Cronin-Wood said the conversation on this matter would be between the respective hospital boards. The LHIN would most likely become involved in talks if the boards were to consider the idea, but ultimately, the decision will come down to the minister of health and long-term care. News Advertiser • April 1, 201113 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com durhamregion.comEntertainment Singing with Glee MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com SOMETIMES, when Vocal Thunder is practising, they’ll wheel the piano out of the music room and into the hall and start sing- ing, and 50 to 100 students will gather around to watch and listen. It’s a moment of pure exuberance often seen on the television show Glee. Dean Peel isn’t Will Shuester, but he does lead J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate’s glee club. And he pleads guilty to trying to get the Ajax students all worked up about music and singing. “What I’m trying to do in all honesty is create excitement,” he says, noting many of the members want to go on to pursue performing arts studies or careers. Mission accomplished -- with some help. The popular series has inspired students at the Ajax school and across the region. J. Clarke’s Jonah Fenske says Glee piqued his interest and a number of people in the choir are close friends, so it was natural for him to try out. “I love the show; I love singing along with it,” Jonah says. “So I felt it would be a tonne of fun, to grow through music.” James Klodnicki says Glee’s popularity doesn’t mean more high school students are coming out for choir. But the Durham District School Board’s programs facilitator for the arts adds there’s “a big asterisk” that goes with his statement. “It has kind of confirmed the cool factor, if you will, of what they’re doing in the choirs,” he says. “It’s validated the work they’re already doing.” More kids are coming out at the elementary level, Klodnicki notes, where several vocal choir pro- grams have been re-named the glee choir. At J. Clarke, when the Jazz Choir became a glee club in September there was such demand that Peel had to turn people away. Like the glee club on TV, Vocal Thunder is preparing for a competition, The Show Choir Canada national championship in Toronto, April 8 and 9. And, as in Glee, the students obviously have a great rapport with Mr. Shuester, er, Peel. “Mr. Peel’s the best teacher,” says Grade 12 stu- dent Emily Ferrier. “He’s totally so much fun.” She says all the choir members watch Glee and points out another similarity to the show, in that Vocal Thunder isn’t just made up of artsy students, but athletes and those with varying interests. “We’re kind of a Smarties bag kind of glee club,” Emily says. She’s been in choirs since Grade 6 and practises at home as well, playing the piano and accompany- ing herself. Emily has the job of choreographing the three songs Vocal Thunder will perform in Toronto. takes on a new cool The students are under the gun, as they entered the event late and have a lot of work to do to get ready. But Emily isn’t feeling a lot of pressure. “If we don’t win, it’s not really a big deal,” she says. “It’s high school; it’s supposed to be fun.” That’s why Brett Formosa joined choir at Mon- signor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School in Oshawa, to have some fun. And because he thought it would be an easy credit, since the glee club and the school’s senior vocal class are basi- cally the same thing. But Brett never imagined he’d have such a good time. “It’s fun to learn how to do songs with other peo- ple, instead of just in the shower.,” the Grade 11 stu- dent says. Being in the club has also helped him with his shyness. “Before, I probably wouldn’t have sung in front of everyone,” Brett says. He hopes to be on Canadian Idol one day and would like to become a professional singer. His peer, Kayla Tripp, also has big ambitions: she’d like to become an actor, describing teaching drama as “my back-up. “I really like singing and performing,” she says. “I’ve always liked performing and being in front of people.” Kayla didn’t need much encouragement to audi- tion for the club this year: she’s been in all of the school’s plays and musicals since she started high school there. And, yes, she’s a big fan of Glee. Kayla says the members are a “really close” group and have lots of laughs. “It’s my favourite time of the day, this class,” she says. Her teacher, Catharine Giasson, is having a lot of fun, too, in her first year at the school. “It taps into what the kids really like,” she says of the club. “And Glee’s really made it so it’s more accessible.” Watching the interplay between her and the stu- dents, Ms. Giasson says her approach is “more relaxed” so that the students feel comfortable expressing themselves. “There’s kids who have really come out of their shells ... and it transfers to other parts of their lives,” she says. durhamregion.com WATCH a video at durhamregion.com SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND AJAX -- Dean Peel, director of Vocal Thunder at J. MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com AJAX -- A burglar comes across more than just valuables in Theft. British author Eric Chappell’s work is Ajax Community Theatre’s final play of the 2010/2011 season. It runs March 31 to April 9 at the Village Community Centre theatre, 22 Sherwood Rd. W., Ajax. Director Kate Arms-Roberts hails from the UK herself, but came to Ajax four years ago from the San Francisco Bay area. One day her husband left a News Advertis- er article for her to see that noted ACT was preparing for its first season. It was a good fit since Arms-Roberts has three decades of theatre experience under her belt. As well, she lives fairly close to home and lives near the Village Community Centre. Arms-Roberts acted in Dangerous Obses- sion last season and was asked if she was interested in directing Theft. “I read it and I just loved it,” she says. “It’s a comic thriller, which is a combination I quite like.” In the play, a couple returns home from a dinner out with friends to find they have been robbed -- and that the burglar is still in the house. They discover that more has been taken than they suspected and think that maybe the culprit they’ve caught in the act didn’t take it all. “The burglar has discovered the safe where they keep their most valuable items,” Arms- Roberts says. And, in trying to find the combination, the thief went through a lot of their personal papers, learning much about the couple in the process. It’s information that comes in handy as he tries to make his escape. Theft features an all-Ajax cast, with the exception of Mark Kalzer of Whitby. Arms-Roberts notes that couple Catharine Speiran and Ian Speiran, while very experi- enced, haven’t been on stage in a long time. On the other hand, Lori Irvin is a newcom- er to the theatre, performing in her second play. The cast also features Jonathan Aiken. Arms-Roberts has acted and directed and enjoys both. “With directing, you get to have an impact on the whole show and that’s fun ... acting, you get to lose yourself in one character and other people look after the big picture.” She notes this isn’t just the last ACT play of the season, but the last at the Village Com- munity Centre theatre as ACT plans on pre- senting next season’s plays at the new St. Francis Centre on Church Street. To buy Theft tickets, call 289-892-4132 or e-mail info@ajaxcommunitytheatre.com. For as long as the Pickering resident can remember, she has craved the opportunity to head to the United States on a hockey scholar- ship. That craving will be satisfied in August, when she packs her personal belongings and hockey equipment for New York, where she will enroll at Plattsburgh State, suiting up for the Cardinals women’s hockey team. “It’s something I’ve always wanted,” she says, recalling overhearing conversations other girls had when she was growing up about the opportunities to play NCAA hockey. “It was one of my dreams.” The Grade 12 student at Dunbarton High School started playing hockey with the boys as a seven year old, switching to girls’ hockey at the age of 12. Her steady progression through the ranks included stops with West Hill, the Scarborough Sharks and Oshawa. The last two seasons she has been with the Durham West Junior Lightning, developing into one of the team’s leaders. “She’s a power forward,” says Wayne McDon- ald, her coach with the Lightning. “She’s very strong on the puck with a great shot. She goes up and down the wing and will add a lot because she has an above-average shot.” This past season she had 6-7-13 point totals and 30 penalty minutes in 36 regular season games. Her play garnered interest from five different Division 3 schools, with the campus- es of Plattsburgh and Elmira visited. Plattsburgh left the biggest impression, espe- cially the second time when she had breakfast with the team and coaching staff, then fol- lowed them to Potsdam to take in a game. “The rink is outstanding and the coaches and team, it felt like they had a real positive impact in their beliefs for hockey,” she says. In addition to excelling on the ice, including attending U18 hockey camps in 2009 and 2010, Stewart, who turns 18 on April 7, had quite an impact on the sports scene at Dunbarton. She helped her senior rugby team reach the 2009 LOSSA finals, played on the varsity baseball team, and with the hockey team, led the pro- gram to the championship series in the sec- ond division of the LOSSA playoffs this sea- son. When she arrives at Plattsburgh as a fresh- man for her first season in the ECAC Western Conference, she doesn’t expect to grab a seat at the end of the bench and become a specta- tor. “I expect to play an average amount,” she says. “I don’t expect to sit on the bench the whole time. I expect to play and have an impact on the team right away.” One of the traits she hopes will help is her leadership skills, something she used this season as an assistant captain with the Light- ning. “It was the first time I had a letter on my sweater since peewee. It changed my charac- ter. I was more positive toward the team.” More excited than nervous about leaving home, there are the provincial champion- ships with her Lightning team in April, fol- lowed by on-ice and dryland training through the summer before leaving for Plattsburgh in late August. Stewart realizes hockey dream HOCKEY RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND PICKERING -- Shannon Stewart, a Grade 12 Dunbarton High School student, will be attending Plattsburgh State University in New York to play hockey beginning in the fall. She played the past two seasons with the Durham West Junior Lightning. HOCKEY Durham trio at national women’s hockey team selection camp TORONTO -- Three Durham Region players are still very much in the hunt for a spot on Canada’s national women’s hockey team. Defencemen Tara Watchorn of Newcastle and Britni Smith of Port Perry along with forward Jennifer Wakefield of Pickering are among 36 players attend- ing a selection camp from Saturday to Tuesday at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto. They will battle for 21 spots on Canada’s roster for the 2011 IIHF world women’s championship, April 16-25 in Switzerland. The camp roster includes four goaltenders, 12 defencemen and 20 forwards. Of those invited, 21 helped Canada win gold at the 2010 4 Nations Cup last November in St. John’s, 16 were part of the roster that won the gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and 15 played at the 2009 IIHF world women’s champion- ship in Finland, winning a silver medal. Canada’s roster for the 2011 world championship will be announced Wednesday, April 6. SNOWBOARDING Evanoff finishes eighth in Italy ITALY -- Richard Evanoff of Pickering finished eighth in the parallel giant sla- lom race at the 2011 FIS snowboard junior world championships in Valmalen- co, Italy. Evanoff qualified with the 12th fast- est time of 1:06.06 in order to advance in the elimination round. In his opening heat, Evanoff won a duel against Korea’s Bo-Gun Choi, bet- tering his time by almost a full second to make his way to the quarter-finals. There he faced Edwin Coratti, the top point holder among junior competi- tors. The first run Evanoff dropped by 0.82 seconds and couldn’t come back in the second. Overall though, he seemed pleased with his effort. “I was happy with the race in the end. I wish I could have been riding in the qualification like I was in finals so I could get a better result. I’m happy with eighth but was looking to place higher. I know I have the ability to do so,” Evanoff, a bronze medal winner at the Canada Winter Games, said in a press release. Mark Ballard, coach of the alpine snowboard team in Valmalenco, sees success ahead for Evanoff. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 1, 201117 AP Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club 650 Lake Ridge Road South, Ajax (905) 426-GOLF (4653) www.carrutherscreekgolf.ca Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club 650 Lake Ridge Road South, Ajax (905) 426-GOLF (4653) www.carrutherscreekgolf.ca *Some conditions may apply. She is the sixth Spar- tan to take home the hon- our, joining Kisha Kelley (2004-05), Lindsay Bowen (2004-05), Kristin Haynie (2004-05), Liz Shimek (2004-05, 2005-06) and Allyssa DeHaan (2009-10) as the only All-Americans in program history. Earlier this season the Ajax native became the first Spartan to be named Big Ten Player of the Year while leading MSU to its first sole Big Ten cham- pionship. She was also a first-team All-Big Ten selection, becoming one of five Spartans to be a four-time all-conference choice. Keane, a six-foot-one forward, finished sixth in the Big Ten in points per game (16.1), and her 531 total points were tied for the fourth most in a MSU single-season. She also tied for the Big Ten lead with 2.4 steals and was fourth with 2.2 three-pointers made per game. Keane was sec- ond on the club with 2.3 assists and third with five rebounds a night, all while playing a shade more than 32 minutes a night. Meanwhile, on the MSU all-time lists, Keane fin- ished her career tied for the most games played (136), second in steals (259), third in 3-point field goals made (183), seventh in points (1,553) and min- utes played (3,654), ninth in field goals made (560) and free throw percentage (79.1 per cent), 11th in games started (95), 13th in assists (300) and free throws made (250), 14th in 3-point field goal per- centage (32.7 per cent), and 17th in rebounds (624) and blocks (46). In addition, Keane is one of seven players in Big Ten history, and the only Spar- tan, to record at least 1,500 points, 600 rebounds, 300 assists and 250 steals. She is one of 20 stu- dent-athletes announced PICKERING ROUGE CANOE CLUB Grab a paddle for registration Signup for the new season is on April 6 PICKERING -- Members of Pickering Rouge Canoe Club can’t wait to get back out on the water and start developing their skills in preparation for the first dragon boat regatta of the season, the Pickering Dragonboat Festival, on June 4-5. PICKERINGPICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURE Spring is the time of year when most homeowners experience a leaky basement. The combination of melting snow, ground thawing and rain, creates hydrostatic pressure in the ground and this pressure causes water to make its way through cracks and voids, as well as seeping through the porous concrete wall. It’s time to call a professional, a contractor who will come out to actually look at your home, provide you with a written quote, references from satisfied customers, proof of liability insurance and also provide a warranty on their work. We all watch the home improvement shows and know what can happen when people don’t do their homework before hiring a contractor. Wondering who to call and what questions to ask, “Call The Foundation Doctor”. They have been serving Durham Region since 1996 and with their years of experience they can determine what the problem is and provide the best possible solution to repair it. They take pride in their workmanship and stand behind their name. Kelly Vaillancourt, owner of, “Call The Foundation Doctor” says, “The most effective solution, is to waterproof your foundation from the outside, to prevent water from coming in contact with the actual concrete wall. We use a rubber membrane, which is expandable so that it stretches with the foundation as it shifts due to our changing climate. We have a variety of excavators to accommodate the size of the space in which we have to work. The actual process involves digging down to the footings, cleaning the foundation wall and filling any cracks and voids with grout. Then we brush on an adhesive, priming material and install the rubber membrane on top. As a secondary line of defense, our specialists, will attach a drain board to the rubber membrane, so that ground water will run down to the weepers and drain away from the foundation. At this point in the process, we will also check to make sure the weeping tile is in good working order before installing new drainage stone and back filling.” Kelly also wants homeowners to know that in these uncertain times, there are alternative, less expensive solutions, “Call The Foundation Doctor” provides, to repair a leaky basement. One of which is injecting cracks, in poured foundations, with a polyurethane material . They also can install complete drainage systems inside and out. Repairing your basement at the first indication of a problem, is a good investment. Kelly explains, “It can prevent expensive clean- ups, loss of personal property, corrosion and possible health risks from mold due to water leakage.” “Call The Foundation Doctor” has a fully operational office, which means that during office hours, you can speak to a person, not a machine.
