Kim Kennedy, 49, of Pickering, and Marga- ret Brooks, 53, of Ajax, met at Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital in December. Both have been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia and need bone marrow transplants. For Ms. Kennedy, this is her second bout with the disease. “I got leukemia four years ago, I thought gosh, it was so much fun, I think I’ll do it again,” she quipped. Four years ago, her symptoms included fatigue, massive weight loss, light-headedness and short- ness of breath. She received chemotherapy before going into remission. Friendship forged by cancer fight AJAX AND PICKERING WOMEN HOLD CLINIC FOR MARROW DONORS SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND AJAX -- Margaret Brooks and Kim Kennedy both have leukemia and are holding a bone marrow clinic on April 2 and are looking for donors. They’ve found donors since the clinic was organized, but they want the community to get tested for other people who may need donors or in case their donors fall through. Register Now! Rouge Valley Health System Foundation board members, volunteers, politicians and hospital staff gathered to celebrate the open- ing of the ambulatory care unit at the Rouge Valley Health Ajax-Pickering hospital on March 21, thanks to a significant contribu- tion by Purdue Pharma Canada, one of the country’s leading pharmaceutical compa- nies, based in Pickering. “Good things take time,” Dr. Cornelia Hentzsch, Purdue president said at the cel- ebration. She explained her predecessor, John Stew- art, pledged the $300,000 nine years ago, and when she spoke with him before the hospital celebration, he was pleased the pledge has become a reality. She said not only does Purdue have a vision to be a leader in providing better health care for patients, but 60 per cent of the company’s employees live in the area and will greatly benefit from the improved unit. The ACU is responsible for day surgery and the accompanying services. Now that the area is three times bigger and services have been expanded and concentrated in one area, it provides “one-stop shopping,” according to Julie Baker, manager of inpa- tient surgery and the ACU. Glad to hear this was Ajax Mayor Steve Par- ish, who said the last time he had surgery at the hospital, he had to go to a lot of different areas for his pre-operative services. “We certainly welcome every improvement to this hospital,” he said. The unit should also attract new doctors and staff. “It’s acting as a draw for great health-care professionals,” said Chad Hanna, president and CEO of the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation. The ambulatory care unit sees 12,000 patients each year, said Ms. Baker. “We’re hoping to triple that over the next three years,” she said. Ms. Baker led the tour of the new unit and explained the new area has a pre-operative assessment clinic, which sees 100 per cent of the patients prior to surgery. The ACU also includes a medicine rapid reference clinic, a pain consult clinic, negative-pressure rooms, an area for general surgery, recovery and a neurology clinic. “We’ve never had a neurologist at the Ajax- Pickering hospital before,” Ms. Baker said. Rene Soetens, co-chairman of the Vital Links campaign, responsible for raising the local share of the funds needed for the hos- pital’s redevelopment, has lived in Ajax most of his life. He was pleased to see the transfor- mation. “It makes you feel good to see it all happen, to see it all come together, to see the services expand,” he said. Ms. Brooks also has two children, 23- and 26-year-old daughters. Before being diagnosed, she noticed she was a little more tired than usual when mow- ing the lawn, but the biggest sign something was wrong was when she developed sores in her mouth that just wouldn’t heal. At first she thought it was an allergic reaction to pine- apples, but subsequent tests brought a much worse diagnosis. As Ms. Brooks was going to and from doctors appointments, she became violently ill, she said. Both women arrived at Princess Margaret in mid-December where they would go through a month of the most aggressive chemotherapy available and they ended up as roommates. “I arrived five minutes earlier than Kim at Prin- cess Margaret and I got the window,” said Ms. Brooks, who added her first impression of Ms. Kennedy was that of a ticked-off woman. “I was angry that I had to be there because I felt fine,” said Ms. Kennedy. “I walk in and not only do I not have my own room, but she’s got the window.” In fact, Ms. Kennedy asked to be transferred to a private room, but by the time one became available a week later, the two women had become fast friends and she declined to move. As they got to know each other, they found they had a long list of things in common, including that they’re both left-handed and they’re practically neighbours, living just 10 minutes from each other. Their disease is an unfortunate commonal- ity. “AML is predominantly a disease that affects men older than the age of 60, so what the hell are we doing in this mess?” said Ms. Kenne- dy. For Ms. Brooks, it was invaluable having someone who had been through it all support her through the physically taxing treatments. Ms. Kennedy calls Ms. Brooks one of her best friends now because they’ve gone through something together. Their families have also become close friends. “It’s life and death and she’s walking the journey hand in hand with me ... there’s a rea- son we met, absolutely,” said Ms. Kennedy. As the two finished up their time at Princess Margaret, they decided to hold a local clinic for OneMatch, Canada’s stem cell and mar- row network, looking for a match as they both needed bone marrow transplants. And then another coincidence, this time a happy one, as both women were told there was a match for them within five days of each other. On a list of factors, both women are 10-out-of-10 matches with their potential donors, which is unusual to see among non- siblings. “It’s very rare,” said Ms. Kennedy. “Seventy per cent of people who have leuke- mia who need a transplant die while waiting for a match.” Knowing this figure and the fact that there are other people in Durham Region who need a match, including one man who lives near Ms. Brooks in Ajax, the two women are determined to move ahead with plans for the clinic and are imploring anyone between the age of 17 and 50 to come out and get swabbed on April 2 between 1 and 8 p.m. at the Ajax- Pickering Navy League of Canada building, 48 Exeter Rd. in Ajax. With $350,000 still remaining in the shel- ter’s share of funding to construct the facil- ity as part of a joint effort with the federal and provincial governments, staff are now also anticipating future maintenance costs. “We’re just getting into the first bills now and they’re quite a bit more than we paid in the old building,” says shelter president Karin Martens. “That’s expected because we have a larg- er facility now so just general maintenance costs are quite a bit higher.” Staff moved into the new 6,205-square foot building, along with more than 100 animals under their care, on Dec. 17 -- two years to the day a fire destroyed their original shelter in Oshawa. The federal and provincial governments contributed $700,000 each to reopen the site at 1505 Wentworth St. through the infrastruc- ture stimulus fund. Shelter staff has been fund- raising since last year to pay for its share of the overall $2-mil- lion project. “We were hoping to get as much of it paid off before we have to take out a mortgage at the end of this month because we want the money to be used for the animals,” says Ms. Martens. “We’ve raised $350,000 of our money and now we just need people to be aware we haven’t finished paying off this building.” There are currently about 15 dogs, 80 cats, and numerous smaller animals under care of staff and volunteers at the shelter, as well as more than 100 birds recently rescued from a home in Fenelon Falls. “To be in a shelter that’s actually designed to properly house animals, it really does make a difference,” says shelter manager Ruby Richards, shortly after the opening. “We’re still working out a few of the bugs for staff to be able to operate in here but the ani- mals themselves are really enjoying the new housing.” Ms. Martens says she’s grateful for how much the community has chipped in to support the shelter over the past couple of years and hopes to see many familiar faces at upcoming fundraising events. “People are still coming down just to take a walk through and see the shelter and they’re absolutely loving it,” she says. “I always said I wanted this to be a commu- nity place and it really has come through.” For more information: CALL 905-665-7430 EMAIL humanedurham@auracom.com VISIT www.humanedurham.com/events. html Dental Care forAdults, Kids and Great Big Babies. • A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. What about Michael Ignatieff? But you really must be following Jack Layton on Twitter. If you were, you would have known the NDP rejected the budget earlier this week, putting us on a road to an election, before any news media outlet was able to slap it onto their website. Generally, we Canadi- ans tend to adopt successful election tech- niques from down south and as politicians campaigned in the 2008 federal election, they were watching the astounding success Barack Obama had with organizing his sup- porters through social media. Although there were some Canadian poli- ticians using social media at the time, most often Facebook pages, I think this time around you’ll see a much better organized online campaign strategy from all parties. In fact, since the 2008 election, most polit- icos have started using some form of social media with varying degrees of success. Most have a Facebook page or Facebook fan page and many have Twitter accounts. If Twitter followers is an indication of popularity, Stephen Harper (@pmharper) is well ahead with about 104,000 follower, about 40,000 followers more than Michael Ignatieff (@m_ignatieff) and Jack Layton (@ jacklayton). The most popular non-leader is Liberal Denis Coderre (@deniscoderre) who tweets in English and French, followed by Conser- vative Tony Clement (@tonyclement_mp). What sets both men apart from most tweeting politicians is that they have a per- sonable tone on their Twitter accounts and they frequently interact with their followers instead of simply blasting out talking points. Some of their counterparts clearly turn their Twitter accounts over to PR staff and they’re simply not as successful. Despite the fact that he hasn’t Tweeted since 2008, the most popular local tweeter is Pickering-Scarbor- ough East MP Dan McTeague (@danmcte- ague). I guess his status as Mr. Gas Prices has solidified his following, but expect his popularity to wane if the campaign kicks into high gear and he doesn’t post. Meanwhile, on Facebook the prime min- ister’s fan page has almost 41,000 likes fol- lowed by Michael Ignatieff with about 36,000 and Jack Layton close behind with 32,000. During the election, expect to see Face- book pages used as a direct line to voters with politicians posting notes to be shared among fans and foes alike. The power of Facebook notes is also evident south of the border where it’s mainstream news every time controversial politicians such as Sarah Palin post one. In terms of candidates, I expect most major parties are already scouring the social media footprint left behind by their oppo- nents. Recall, in 2008, in the Durham riding, NDP candidate Andrew McKeever resigned after profanity-laced Facebook comments he had directed at one woman came to light. In fact, as the campaign unfolds, it’ll be a fine line between personal and approach- able commenting and headline-grabbing gaffes, but certainly it’s worth it for politi- cians if followers online can be transformed into votes at the polls. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. Reka Szekely Federal election candidates ready to friend and follow Do your part on Earth Hour for a better tomorrow During the first Earth Hour, held in Sydney, Australia in 2007, 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 business- es turned their lights off for an hour to take a stand against and draw attention to climate change. This amazing effort reduced Sydney’s energy consumption by 10.2 per cent for that time period, which had the equivalent effect of tak- ing 48,000 cars off the road. Since that time, the event has spread across the globe. Last year, a record- breaking 128 countries -- an estimated 1.3 billion people including 10 million Canadians -- joined in the lights-out event. This year, Earth Hour is slated for this Saturday, March 26, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., when lights will once again go dark all over the world. An hour in the dark is a perfect opportunity for all of us to examine our individual energy consumption and to think about what kind of footprint we will leave on our planet. Or more importantly, it’s a time to think about the legacy we will leave our children, grandchildren and future generations. Climate change and global warming aren’t just buzz words thrown around by environmental activists. The Earth is indeed getting warmer -- average tem- peratures have climbed 0.8 degrees C (1.4 degrees F) worldwide since 1880, according to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. In addition, the Unit- ed Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2007, reports 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850. And the results are alarming. Arc- tic ice is rapidly disappearing, glaciers and mountain snows are melting, coral reefs are dying off and some experts feel the recent upsurge in extreme weather events -- wildfires, heat waves, tropical storms -- can be attributed in part to climate change. So what can we -- as individuals, as part of our families or as part of our communities in Durham Region -- do to help stem the global warming tide? We can keep close tabs on our energy consumption and invest in green ener- gy options for everyday needs such as heating, air conditioning, laundry and transportation. We can also try to cut our ties with the automobile, using a bike or public transit to get around whenever possible. And finally, we can all lobby our pro- vincial and federal politicians, letting them know Canadians want a green- er, more Earth-friendly future and tell them to adopt policies that support and enhance a reduction in global warm- ing. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 25, 20117 AP AJAXPICKERING DOLPHINSFOOTBALL&CHEERLEADING HOUSELEAGUEREGISTRATION Comejoinusinthemostaffordablesportfor yourchildren.Allequipmentsupplied. This year, children participated in astronomy-themed activities including checking out the con- stellations in the Royal Ontar- io Museum’s portable Starlab, which was set up in the Nuclear Information Centre, located on the plant’s grounds on Mont- gomery Park Road in Pickering. Ajax resident Susan Chung was one of the small number of peo- ple drawn to the plant with ques- tions in the wake of the situation in Japan. She said she decided to pop in on Thursday after see- ing the banner for March break activities as she and her hus- band were walking along the waterfront trail near the plant. OPG staff answered her ques- tions. “We were just comparing the different designs,” said Ms. Chung. “When they talk about the rods and the casing, it’s like, OK what is all that?” She brought her children with her on Friday to both check out the March break activities and to learn more about CANDU reac- tors. “They’ve been watching the news and they’ve heard about Japan and the explosions, so I thought it would be neat to see,” said Ms. Chung. Fourteen-year-old Celina Chung said it was interesting checking it all out. As to whether she feels safe, Ms. Chung said her family has lived near the plant for four years now and so far has no plans to move. The Starlab was a big hit among the kids. “It was pretty amazing to see all the stars and constellations,” nine-year-old Ajax resident Rup Roy. Ajax’s Jamie Chen, 12, agreed. “It was fun seeing them pro- jected.” Molly Roy thought the event would be a great activity for the kids over March break. “I saw the ad in the newspa- per and found it interesting,” she said. As to whether she’s worried about the situation in Japan, she said no. “My husband works here.” Pickering’s Monique Villa- neuva said the event was also a hit with her six-year-old twins, Gabriela and Angelina. “They enjoyed themselves, definitely,” she said, though the day ended in tears for one of the girls after her rocket craft went missing. No problem, said mom, they could make another one at home. Overall, OPG’s Cheryl John- ston said, about 200 people per day attended the March break events between Wednesday and Saturday. After there were long lines for last year’s LEGO-themed activi- ties, OPG opted for six pre-regis- tered sessions per day. Ms. John- ston said they filled up quickly and there were waiting lists. “A lot of people my age remem- ber going to the planetarium and the planetarium’s been gone 15 years and now instead of going to the planetarium, the plane- tarium comes to you,” she said. Other than Ms. Chung, Ms. Johnston said, only one other person came in to ask questions during the March break sessions about the situation in Japan. The person was looking for informa- tion about iodide pills. “I think it’s on people’s minds, but we’ve been operating in this community for 40 years; we’ve demonstrated the safety here daily and people have a lot of confidence,” said Ms. Johnston. 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 www.furnituregalleries.ca *Credit equal to the value of the HST. It wasn't long before the Oshawa man was making calls and gather- ing volunteers to start planning the first annual Durham Region Com- edy Festival, slated for Sept. 15, 16 and 17. "This is something that's going to bring international attention to Durham and be a lot of fun," he said. "I mean, who doesn't like comedy?" The plan is to bring a series of big-name comedians to town for shows at local venues such as the Gen- eral Motors Cen- tre and Regent Theatre. Mr. Weisz said there will also be smaller, free events at local bars and restaurants, as well as a comedy parade through downtown Oshawa the week- end of Sept. 10. "This will be the first com- edy parade in the world, there's never been any- thing like it," said Mr. Weisz, who envisions participants dressed like Charlie Chaplin and the Three Stooges. A portion of proceeds from the ticketed shows will go to Make a Wish Canada with a goal of rais- ing $50,000 this year and $1 million over the next 10 years. The festival is still in the early planning stages and organizers are looking for more volunteers to sit on committees, as well as corpo- rate sponsors. To give people a taste of the laughs to come, a free open mic comedy night is planned for April 17 at 8 p.m. at Fazio's restaurant, 33 Sim- coe St. S. in Oshawa. For reserva- tions, call Fazio’s at 905-571-3042. Comedian Jeff Elliott will be per- forming and former sprinter Ben Johnson will be on hand to auto- graph copies of his book Seoul to Soul. Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com durhamregion.comMonth in the arts Artist Margaret Farrar channels her Nova Scotia roots Even though she was born and raised in Montreal, Whitby artist Margaret Far- rar feels she is channelling her mother’s Nova Scotia heritage when she makes her oil and watercolour paintings of sea- scapes, boats and shorelines. A quote from her artist statement defines the connection: “The love of the ocean, the shore, the people and lifestyle and por- traying the effects of nature on the land, sea and people are a main focus.... Salt air is in (my) blood and inspires (me).” She regularly visits and paints in Nova Scotia and shoots reference photos for studio paintings when she returns home. The award-winning Farrar has shown her work across Canada and in Los Ange- les and will be showing water scenes, ocean shores and boats in two exhibitions this spring: at the Ontario Power Gen- eration Information Centre in Pickering from April 11 to May 30; and at Reed’s Flo- rists, Pickering Town Centre, from May 2 to June 20. She will also be art instruc- tor at an April 15 to 17 creative retreat at Elmhirst’s Resort on Rice Lake. Art wasn’t her first choice as a youth -- in fact, she won an athletic scholarship to a New Hampshire college and looked down her nose at her “artist type” con- temporaries. But after beginning a work- ing career in the investment field and marrying in the early 1970s, Farrar dis- covered her artistic bent and took paint- ing lessons at McGill University, eventual- ly participating in the Montreal artist-run “atelier” scene. As a maturing artist, she began teaching at various locales around the city and became a founding (and now lifetime member) of the Dorval Art Asso- ciation. CONTESTS Two books for a lucky young reader Metroland Durham and local author/ publisher team up DURHAM -- If you’re a Durham resident aged nine to 14 who likes reading and history, we have a contest for you. April 2 is International Chil- dren’s Book Day and this year’s theme is The Book Remembers, a reminder that books can be priceless sources of history. You don’t have to tell this to Roderick Benns. The Whitby author and publisher’s Lead- ers and Legacies series of books is aimed at young folks and fea- tures Canadian prime ministers, as his website states, “as mystery- solving, adventurous youth.” The idea is to make history more interesting for young peo- ple and the series has garnered rave reviews. Benns is offering to sign and give away one copy each of the first two books in the series, The Mystery of the Moonlight Mur- der: An Early Adventure of John Diefenbaker, and The Legends of Lake on the Mountain: An Early Adventure of John A. Macdonald. And that’s where you come in. The winner of the books will have correctly answered the fol- lowing four questions: • What is the date of Confeder- ation? • How many prime ministers of Canada have there been? • Who was Canada’s longest- serving prime minister? • Have there been more Liber- al or Conservative prime minis- ters? E-mail your answers by mid- night on April 2 to mruta@dur- hamregion.com. We’ll choose a winner from those who get all four questions right and, in addition to giving away the autographed books, we’ll take your picture and put it in the newspaper. They completed the sweep in pool play on Wednesday with a 6-1 win over Fort Frances, as Corrado Cammisulli scored twice, with singles credited to Nate Fermin, Matt Adams, Corrado Gianfriddo and Tyler Traill. Later that evening Derek Leuning scored twice, with singles to Jeremy Wu and Cam- misulli in a 4-1 victory over Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Ajax resident Paul St. John has a vision for CLax BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Paul St. John is hoping that a vision he has for a Canadian professional winter lacrosse league will become a reality this fall. The Ajax resident is heading up a group that would like to launch CLax, a strictly Canadian league that would offer fans across the country professional lacrosse from November to April. “Even when I was playing I was trying to fig- ure out ways we could have east-west all-star games. It never came to light because you always get so far and you stop because you are nervous about taking it to the next level,” he says of his vision. “With the way lacrosse is growing and with the amount of players that can’t play pro because there just aren’t enough teams, now is the time. To keep it Canadian is huge.” St. John is quick to point out the league will not be in direct competition with the NLL, as those players are under contract and commit- ted to the league. Rather, CLax would appeal to Canadian players who just aren’t quite ready to take the next step. The league would be Cana- dian, with current rules being tinkered with to enhance fan interest. One of the features of the league would be the elimination of an offence/defence system, with players forced to play both ends of the floor, the way the game used to be played. “We’re going to play the game the way it should be played,” says St. John. “We want kids to look at our league and say ‘That’s where I want to be because I want to show all my skills.’” St. John has already been in discussion with ownership groups, looking to place franchis- es in cities with arenas that have a minimum seating capacity of 3,000. He is looking at plac- es like Oshawa, Peterborough, Owen Sound, Kitchener, London and Six Nations, to name just a few of the possibilities in Ontario. He also adds that there has been interest from an ownership group in Montreal, with cities in British Columbia also on the wish list. A league with eight or more teams playing a 20-game schedule in the inaugural year is the target. St. John wouldn’t disclose the franchise fee, but in regards to prospective owners, he said that hockey players and OHL teams are being targeted to launch the league in time for this November. A June deadline has been set for confirmation. If that timeline isn’t met, then a start date in 2012 would be the goal. Players would be compensated for playing, receiving a base and bonus based on wins, with a salary cap in place for each franchise. St. John figures teams would need to draw 2,000 fans a game as a break-even point, with televi- sion exposure and corporate partners helping the cause. The league launched a website earlier this week at www.clax.ca to outline its vision. Zain, the fifth seed in the U18 draw, dumped second-seed Martin Beran 6-2, 6-4 in the final at the White Oaks Inn and Racquet Club in Niagara-on-the-Lake. “My brother and I both had a good tour- nament, and we are really happy with our results,” said Zain on the Ontario Tennis Association website. “We both played really well.” Raheel echoed his brother’s comments. “The matches were tough,” he said, “and I am happy with the way the tournament turned out.” durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 25, 201119 AP * * * * Fri.,Apr.8•7:30pm Sat.,Apr.9•2pm&7pm Purchase tickets at Rogers Centre Box Office located at Gate 9”, online at www.ticketmaster.ca, or www.rogerscentre.ca, or charge-by-phone 1-855-985-5000 GM Centre to host event Sept. 10-13 OSHAWA -- Local hockey fans may get a chance to see, say, Boone Jenner in a Toronto Maple Leafs uniform in Sep- tember. The General Motors Centre will host a four-team 2011 National Hockey League rookie tournament Sept. 10-13, it was announced this week. In addition to the Leafs, the Otta- wa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins will also take part. By that time, at least three members of the Oshawa Generals will be prop- erty of NHL teams, as forwards Jenner, Nicklas Jensen and Lucas Lessio are all touted as top prospects for the June draft. Defenceman Colin Suellentrop is also on the radar. Jenner and Jensen sat 18th and 20th respectively among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting’s mid- season rankings, while Lessio was 44th and Suellentrop 117th. The Leafs own first-round picks of the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins, which could put them in position to scoop up one of the Generals stars. Either way, fans will get a chance to see some future NHLers. The tournament kicks off Saturday, Sept. 10 with a 2 p.m. game between Pittsburgh and Ottawa and culminates with Toronto against Ottawa on Tues- day, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. Each team will play the others once. Adult tickets will cost $16 for after- noon games and $18.50 for evening matches. See www.generalmotorscentre.com or call the box office at 1-877-436-8811 for more information. Some playdowns will send players home early, and the last bonspiel at Annandale is the annual men’s Last Chance slated for April 16-17. The youth closing banquet is also on the 17th, and the ice is turned over to the youths for skating after the Last Chance bonspiel final game ends. The Dominion Regalia Silver Tankard is the single knockout event that has two teams compete together and the combined score determines the win. Annandale men’s team of Gord Norton, Warren Leslie, Michael Bry- son and Alex Bianchi teamed up with Chris Van Huyse, Tim March, Patrick Janssen and Tyler Anderson to win the Zone 6 playdown in Whitby on Dec. 18. Mark Kean is expect- ed to spare for Alex Bianchi when the teams advance to the regional April 2 at the York Curling Club. A win there can put them into their home Annandale club for the Domin- ion Regalia Silver Tankard Ontario finals April 3. The Ontario champions team consists of skip Glenn Howard with Pickering resi- dent Richard Hart at vice, and Craig Savill and Brent Laing playing front end. Next on the calendar is the Victoria Curling Clas- sic March 31 to April 3, when Wayne Mid- daugh is slated to spare for Richard Hart. The men’s field is the strongest in the history of the event. The 2010 Olympic gold medal winner Kevin Martin will try to defend the title he captured there last year. He will be hard pressed to repeat as teams such as Glenn Howard, Pat Simmons, Kevin Koe, Jeff Stoughton, Brad Gushue and Mike McE- wen will all be trying to capture the 2011 championship. During these tough economic times, businesses need an affordable way to advertise their products and services and create a name for themselves in the community. The Focus on Business advertising feature was designed to help businesses succeed at an affordable price. The feature has five zones: Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, and advertisers can choose to run in any number of them. If they want to target a specific area, they can choose one zone or if they want broad coverage they can choose to run in all five. Advertising packages are available for six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks, and discounted rates are available for longer-term commitments. “I have nothing but good things to say about the Focus on Business feature,” says Wayne Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows and Doors, who has been advertising in the feature for 15 years. Having an ad in the newspaper every week helps businesses build recognition. Readers who see the advertisement on a regular basis become familiar with the business. Running in the section long term shows potential customers that the business is consistent and is there for the long term. “I have been advertising for 15 years,” says Tom Susac, owner of Sports Station in Oshawa. “I have people tell me not to worry about giving them my number, because they see me in the paper every week.” The feature includes a 3” wide by 1.5” deep ad, but the best part is the free editorial that comes with each six week run. “The editorials are very powerful and are able to explain things better than you can in an ad,” says Tom. The articles will talk in-depth about the business and can include a photograph or image. Many advertisers find that the articles provide a surge in phone calls and sales. The articles allow readers to learn more about the businesses, including detailed information about the products and services they offer. The Focus on Business advertising feature is great investment for businesses. Many advertisers have seen a dramatic increase in their bottom line because of advertising in the section. “I figure that I spend about $5,000 annually on advertising in Focus on Business, and it definitely brings that back tenfold,” says Tom. Spaces are currently available in all five zones. Call today to book your space! For more information on the Focus on Business feature or to book an ad, please call Connie Baker at (905) 579-4400 ext. 2271 or email cbaker@durhamregion.com. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 25, 201121 P Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? Renee Louise St. Jean Chambers September 16, 1971- March 26, 2004 Renee, If we could have a lifetime wish A dream that would come true We’d pray to God with all our hearts For yesterday and you. A thousand words can't bring you back We know because we've tried And neither will a million tears We know because we've cried. You left behind our broken hearts And happy memories too We cherish those, because they are, All we have of you With everlasting Love and Prayers Mom and your loving Family In Loving Memory of my beautiful daughter Marcia Scarlett-Harmon who was taken from us 10 sad years ago Sad was the parting No one can tell So sudden on earth the sorrow fell The blow was hard, The shock severe To part with the one we loved so dear. Dearer still as years depart Her memory lives within our hearts. Sadly missed & remembered forever by Mom Louise Scarlett, your Sisters, Brothers and their spouses, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and friends.
