The Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospi- tal has officially opened the doors to the rede- veloped 140,000 square feet of new and reno- vated space. “This project has been a long time coming but it’s here and it’s open and it’s being used,” said Jay Kaufman, chairman of the Rouge Val- ley Health System board of directors, on Feb. 17. He was the first speaker in a long list of poli- ticians, volunteers and physicians who shared how the redevelopment will benefit the com- munity. They were gathered in the new Har- wood Bistro, a cafeteria that’s 2,000 square feet, bright and airy and features 33-foot floor- to-ceiling windows and seating for 104. Minister of Health and Long Term Care Deb Matthews announced that on top of the pro- vincial government’s operating funding of $5.8 million recently announced for the hospital, it will tack on another $2.9 million. Pickering Call905-426-6603 www.chartwellreit.ca parkway retirement residence POLICE One dead in series of crashes on icy Durham roads Woman dies at scene of Pickering collision JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- One person is dead following a series of acci- dents that occurred as freezing rain swept across Durham Region during the Thursday morning commute. A woman believed to be in her 50s died at the scene of a crash at Brock and Taunton roads in Pickering, Durham police spokesman Dave Selby said. The crash was one of several, including a big pile-up near Orono, caused by the sudden arrival of freezing rain, he said. “We had about 16 motor vehicle collision scenes in about a half hour, between 7:38 a.m. and 8:17,” Mr. Selby said. Police also temporarily closed Taunton Road west of Hwy. 115 after an estimated 15 vehicles slid off an icy hill, some of them slamming into one another, Mr. Selby said. Police urged drivers to use extreme caution, especially in the northern reaches of the region. “Our officers are describing (roads from) Taunton north as very slippery right now,” Mr. Selby said. RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND PICKERING -- Durham Regional Police were at the scene of a fatal collision on Taunton Road, just west of Brock Road, on Feb. 17. A woman in her mid 50s was killed in the accident. Roads were icy at the time of the early-morning collision. Taunton was closed in both directions while police continued its investigation. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 18, 20114 AP AJAX -- An Ajax man who armed himself with kitchen knives during a domestic dis- pute was subdued with a Taser, police said. Three Durham officers were injured as they struggled with the man, who became agitated when they responded to a call for help from a woman in the home, in the area of Rossland and Westney roads, about 11 a.m. Monday. The woman told cops her ex-husband was in the home contrary to his probation order, police said. When officers confronted the man, he armed himself with three kitchen knives and threatened them, police said. One officer deployed a Taser but the man remained combative, police said. When the struggle spilled outside, one cop sustained a minor laceration to his head, another was bit- ten and a third received a minor finger injury. An Ajax man, 44, whose name was withheld by police, faces charges including assaulting police, resisting arrest, failing to comply with probation and weapons offences. All content copyright Editorial Opinions I’m thinking whoever came up with that old piece of parenting advice -- it’s better to be a parent than a friend to your kids -- never anticipated Facebook. Last week in this space, I wrote about the appropriate age to allow kids to cre- ate Facebook accounts, and naturally that leads to the question: what do you do when they get one? Parents should understand that logging onto Facebook is an important aspect of teens’ social lives. A Pew survey last year in the U.S. found 75 per cent of teens are on Facebook and I’d wager that number is higher among girls. The first step is to create an account. Even if you don’t need it, ask for help and advice allowing you to talk about privacy options and chances are this is the point where your teen will offer to be your first Facebook friend. Make sure you add other friends and family members as Facebook friends. You don’t want your kid to feel like you only logged on to keep tabs on them. Facebook will offer suggestions on other people you might know. Don’t automati- cally send out requests to them. If your teen has a good friend you know well, it’s a great a idea to be Facebook friends with them, but don’t send out friend requests to every other teen your kid knows. When it comes to commenting on a teen’s Facebook page, do it often enough that your kid realizes you’re actively using Facebook but not so often as to appear like a Facebook stalker. Probably no more than a handful of times a week. A couple of things not to do: don’t take family arguments onto Facebook, don’t create family arguments based on what you read on Facebook unless the issue is important and absolutely never jump into a kid’s arguments by messaging their friends or enemies. If it looks like your child is being bullied on Facebook, talk to them about it. Also talk to them about inappropri- ate content, including posts and photos, but start with a conversation rather than an instant demand that they remove the material. Give teens the benefit of the doubt. If they went to a party and photos show the booze flowing freely, it doesn’t necessarily mean they got drunk. But it’s not a bad idea to remind them that if they get into a situation where they’re uncomfortable or can’t drive home, you’d be happy to pick them up. And in all cases remember your kid’s friends are reading the posts, keep the lame jokes and awkward comments to in- person conversations. After all, you don’t want to be the parent that ends up on the Failbook blog (http://failbook.failblog. org). Remember, being friends with your kid on Facebook is a sign of trust. It takes just a couple of clicks to block you. Got a tip for being a good parent on Face- book? Send me a message. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. The Ajax-Pickering hospital officially opened its 140,000-square-foot addi- tion, which includes a new emergency department, new labs and a complex continuing care unit with space for 30 beds. Noted Jay Kaufman, chairman of the board for the Rouge Valley Health Sys- tem, “This celebration is a result of vision and hard work long shared by our staff, our doctors, our auxiliary, our many volunteers and the community to expand and modernize our hospital. As west Durham continues to grow, so will our ability to provide excellent care, close to home.” This expansion isn’t just good news for Ajax and Pickering residents. Any- time a hospital in Durham expands, or adds a new program, it is good news for all of us. With no hospital in Whitby, those residents living in the south end of Whitby are more likely to use Ajax than Oshawa when they need medical care. A new and expanded emergency room should take some pressure of hos- pitals in Clarington and Oshawa and two digital mammography units will help reduce wait times for breast cancer screening in Durham. Volunteers, staff and anyone who donated to the hospital’s expansion should be proud of themselves today. While some communities across Can- ada are seeing their hospitals close or downsized, we can say health care in Durham is now that little bit better. Health care remains one of the biggest budgetary challenges of the provincial government, no matter which party is in power. The system is not perfect. But timely and quality health care must be available to all patients. Hospital staff deserve to work in conditions that are manageable and as stress-free as pos- sible. So each time one of our health- care facilities in Durham Region gets an upgrade, we’re moving in the right direction, answering the needs of a growing population and aging demo- graphic. Now, it’s time to turn our attention to getting a new hospital in Whitby. A community with more than 100,000 people deserves a facility, especially one which had a hospital until 2001, when it became a specialty clinic and later a long-term care facility. Reka Szekely durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 18, 20117 AP Ajax, Pickering residents expected at Feb. 22 council meeting PICKERING -- Some Pickering councillors and residents hope to help save some signifi- cant Greenwood land in Pickering on Feb. 22. Durham Region has plans to convert 1,200 hectares of farmland in northeast Pickering to housing for 30,000 people. However in October that plan was rejected by Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs since it is con- trary to the Province’s Places to Grow Act. The proposed urban expansion onto valu- able agricultural lands is out of step with the Province’s regional growth strategy that aims to limit urban sprawl, the ministry ruled. But developers have already purchased lands in the area and in 2010, Pickering coun- cil supported Durham Region’s position. The Region is currently appealing the Province’s decision. On Feb. 22, Pickering Regional Council- lor Bill McLean will present a motion to Pickering council that opposes urban sprawl, increased traffic in rural Pickering, increased taxes to pay for infrastructure needs of the new residents, increased flooding in Ajax and Pickering, and destruction of wildlife, water quality, and the finest farmland in Ontario. It’s nothing more than “leap-frog develop- ment which will cost the taxpayers,” Coun. McLean said in a press release. Coun. McLean, other members of council in opposition to development on the lands and community advocate Maurice Brenner have been running a three-week campaign to inform, engage and mobilize the community, and “the support has been overwhelming,” said Mr. Brenner. -- With files from Torstar News Service VIJAY BADHWAR,DMD Dental Care forAdults, Kids and Great Big Babies. • A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. Plans came before the planning and devel- opment committee Monday regarding a bank building to go on the northwest side of Liver- pool Road and Hwy. 401. The plan is to replace Tropix Night Club with a 1,120-square-metre, two-storey bank build- ing with a drive-through, which will have two entrances. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson said it’s no secret that he’s opposed to drive- throughs. At the same meeting, the planning committee approved staff do a drive-through study, which will look into issues such as traf- fic congestion, urban design, noise, air and light pollution, and pedestrian safety. That will come to the committee at a future date. The proposal for the banking facility came to the committee for information only and will come back for approval once it goes through the planning process. There are 91 Durham District School Board students who have rides in excess of 60 minutes in the morning and 111 stu- dents whose rides exceed an hour after school. Last year, there were 158 students with a ride time longer than an hour in the morning and 174 students in transit for over an hour in the afternoon. “This is a good news report,” superinten- dant Mark Joel said when he presented the report to the school board’s standing com- mittee. “Geography and programs continue to be the main reasons why ride times are high.” Ajax trustee Donna Edwards thanked staff for the report but said she was con- cerned about the number of children with special needs who were on buses for long periods of time to get to schools with pro- grams geared to their needs. “Even 56 to 60 minutes is really high,” said Trustee Edwards. Parents of children with special needs sometimes make the decision to send their child to a school that is farther from their home because the program is the best for the child despite a longer bus ride, said Kelly Mechoulan, the CAO of Durham Stu- dent Transportation Services. She said a large chunk of that money will hire new staff for the extra space. “We also want to make sure the space is utilized,” she said in an interview afterward. The project has been in the works since October of 2007. The $94.5-million project is the largest sin- gle investment by the RVHS and the Province since Rouge Valley was created in 1998. The redevelopment provides better flow for patients and staff and has brought along new state- of-the art equipment. On top of the emergency room that has space for 60,000 patients a year, a new ambulatory care unit and a new laboratory that’s three times the size of the old one, the redevelopment brings a new car- diac diagnostics unit. This features a larger space with improved facilities, privacy and easier access to patients, as well as the first 256-image computed tomography or CT scanner at a community hospital in Canada. Dr. Raymond Goh, chief of diagnostic imaging, said the hospital can now be prepared for the future, and while he hopes “none of you have to come to the hospital down the road, if you do, we will be ready for you.” The complex continuing care unit opened last spring, and provides increased space for patients who are moving from acute care to post-acute care. Dr. Romas Stas, RVHS associate chief of staff, has been with the hospital since 1972. He said it’s thanks to the community -- residents, politicians, staff and volunteers alike -- that the hospital has grown from some “dark days” in the past to the flourishing hos- pital it is today. But he said there is still more work to do. “We must ultimately strive so we can meet our ultimate goal,” he said, adding that is to be the best community hospital not only nationally, but also internationally. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish called the hospital “the heart and soul of the community” and said that’s why the Town donated to the renovation as well as the campaign to bring the first MRI to Ajax-Picker- ing. Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said “the City of Pickering is also going to meet its obligation to fund the overall project.” Page 6 - Today’s editorial RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND AJAX -- Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, was among the guest speakers during the official opening ceremony for the redevelopment at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital Feb. 17. MUSIC Bluegrass music alive and well Society hosts concerts, jam s MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- What’s often mis- taken for a kind of folk or country music, but has something in com- mon with jazz? The answer is bluegrass music and a local group presents a con- cert series starting Feb. 20. The term is most strongly linked to the music of Bill Monroe, says Judy Fink, a member of the Pine Ridge Bluegrass Folklore Society and organizer of the Bluegrass Sun- days concert series. Monroe’s band, the Blue Grass Boys, was named after his home state, Kentucky, and Monroe is considered the founding father of the genre. “It’s roots are in old country,” Fink says. “But bluegrass is very specific in that there are four instruments that make up the basic bluegrass configuration: guitar, banjo, man- dolin and stand-up bass.” Fink notes that bluegrass is like jazz in that the instrumentalists all have solos. You can hear for yourself at a Bluegrass Sundays show in the main hall at the Highland Creek Legion, Branch 258, at 45 Lawson Rd. in east Scarborough, the new home of the series. The first concert of the series is Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. and features The Spinney Brothers, an award-win- ning four-piece band from Nova Scotia. On March 20 at 2 p.m., Blue- grass Sundays welcomes The Char- lie Sizemore Band from Kentucky. The last concert of the series begins at 7 p.m. on April 10, featuring Rus- sell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out from Georgia. The Bluegrass Sundays winter concert series has been running for more than 25 years and features top performers who play a circuit of gigs that includes such stops as Windsor, Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston. Fink says the PRBS has been around for roughly 25 years and has more than 150 members. As the only such club in the GTA, its members come from a wide area. “A very large number come from the Oshawa/Port Perry area,” she says, adding most are musicians or partners of musicians. There’s a monthly jam and meet- ing, which has been happen- ing since the club formed, at the Woodview Community Centre in Oshawa. Fink explains that when the musicians arrive, they gather in small groups with friends and colleagues and spend most of the afternoon jamming. For part of that time, there’s the Slow Jam for begin- ners, when one or two more expe- rienced players will pick a song or two and teach it to the other musi- cians. Eventually, the main hall upstairs is set up for a concert. “The groups that are playing downstairs, the jam groups, are invited to come upstairs and play for an audience,” Fink says. The meetings are held from 1 to 5 p.m. and the cost is $2 for members and $4 for non-members. Upcom- ing sessions are March 13, April 10, May 15 and June 5. There are no meetings in July and August. Speaking of members, Fink says the society would like to see more younger people involved in the PRBS as most members are of retirement age. “We are very definitely encourag- ing younger players,” Fink says. The Highland Creek Legion is near Meadowvale and Kingston roads (take the Port Union Road exit from Hwy. 401). For more information and to order concert series tickets in advance ($20 each), contact Judy at 416-779-2627 or e-mail bgsun- days@aol.com. Learn more about the society at pineridge.timetraces.ca. RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND OSHAWA -- Pineridge Bluegrass and Folklore Society member Paul Puckrin played a five-string banjo during a jam session at the Woodview Community Centre on Feb. 13. Below left, members Tom McCreight, on bass, and Ron Adams, on guitar, also took part in a jam. TAKE OUR POLL Ajax’s Angela Adam a homegrown talent Probably not enough credit is given to local community centre recreational art programs for the benefits they bring to aspiring artists of all ages and talent and intent. Newly professional Ajax artist Angela Adam credits classes she took with award-winning watercolour painter Hi-Sook Barker, under the auspices of the Pickering program, for being the springboard for her nascent fine art career. She studied with Barker during three sessions in 2007/2008, learning basic, then advanced watercolour techniques and was soon offering work for sale and participat- ing in local juried shows. Adam is now refin- ing her technique and diversifying her range of subjects while looking for further oppor- tunities and venues to advance her fine art endeavours. Adam was born in Belleville and grew up in Trenton, drawing and painting enthusias- tically as a child and then studying graphic design, marketing and photography at Loy- alist College in Belleville. She has worked in a variety of advertising-related jobs in and around the GTA and in various coordination positions for an advertising agency, a major book publisher and a life insurance compa- ny. She now has her own freelance graphic design business and lives in Ajax with part- ner Rod and son Cody. Adam’s subject matter ranges from land- scapes to buildings and animals to people. She acknowledges that it’s from working with images of animals that she derives the greatest pleasure -- with farm and wild ani- mals the ongoing subject of this fascination. She paints commissions of pets and, after completing a recent portrait of her son with a family dog from a family photo, she feels confident to offer people portrait commis- sions as well. A trip through the picture gal- leries on Adam’s site, www.angelasfineart.ca, attests to the increased sophistication of her painting technique and accomplishment of detail in the short space of time that she has offered her work as a professional. Watch for her work in local juried shows and, eventually, in one-person exhibitions at which she will be showcasing her increasing- ly varied artistic output. The team ended the 11-team round robin with a record of 3-7. They found the ice and rocks great, enjoyed the experience and hope to enter a bonspiel or two before the end of the season. Annandale held the ladies Cupid Bonspiel on Feb. 12. They hosted 12 teams including one from Port Perry. They all enjoyed some excellent skins curling, with everyone winning at least a couple of skins. Annandale ladies had the top three teams. Team Davison was first, second was Team Bain and in third was Team Scanlan. They had a great raffle table, excellent door prizes and the day was completed with a taste testing of Amarula liqueur. In the OCA junior mixed Zone 6 playdown at the Oshawa Curling Club Feb. 12-13, Annandale had two entries in the six-team dou- ble knockout, skipped by James McPherson and Wes Forget. McPherson won the B side and the team advances to York Curl- ing Club regional March 12-13. For the OCA bantam mixed Zone 6, Annandale had three entries in the nine-team double knock- out, skipped by Andre Lima, Dil- lon Pierce and Riley McMulkin. McMulkin was entered as the skip but Kaitlin Jewer actually skipped the team. All three were sidelined and do not advance. Annandale is hosting the Zone 6 playdown for the Tim Hortons Colts on the weekend of Feb. 19. There is no charge to drop by and see some curling action. The competition is basically for those curlers who have not won any- thing major. Team Glenn Howard won its sixth straight Ontario title in Grimsby at the 2011 Ontario pro- vincial curling championship Dominion Tankard Feb. 13. The Ontario team consists of Glenn Howard with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill playing front end. The team now heads for the Tim Hortons Brier March 5-13 in London. Due to another commitment, Richard Hart will not be able to attend the next planned bonspiel, and in his place, Wayne Middaugh is slated to play third for the team at the March 31 Victoria Curling Clas- sic. BOXING Cook ready for pro debut Ajax boxer looking for knockout BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Before he even steps into the ring for his pro debut, Brandon Cook already knows how to hype a fight. The Ajax boxer has sold about 200 tickets on his own for The Fighters, a pro card Saturday night at the Hershey Centre in Missis- sauga featuring five fights, includ- ing three championship bouts. He’s also learned how to talk some smack to generate interest. “It’s going to be a great fight. I can’t wait. I’m going for the knock- out,” he says. Cook will be one of two Motor City Boxing Club members on the card, as Whitby’s Phil Rose, with a professional record of two wins and no losses, will square off against Kitchener’s Julius Bunda, who has a pair of wins and a loss to his credit. That fight will be the second of the night, the first featuring Cook against Francis Lafreniere of Que- bec, who has a loss and draw on his record. The two will fight in the middleweight division (162 pounds). Cook admits to knowing very little about his opponent. He also doesn’t care. “I’m so excited,” he says of Satur- day’s fight, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. “I’m just ready to go. I can’t wait.” Nicknamed ‘Bad Boy’, Cook recalls getting into a little trouble for fighting all the time in high school. He decided to take the anger and aggression from out- side and move it inside a boxing ring, joining the Ajax Boxing Club, transferring to the Durham Box- ing Academy and finally finding a home club with the Motor City Boxing Club in Oshawa. After a string of amateur fights, including a silver medal in 2008 at provincials, he decided to turn pro. “I decided two months ago because my style is more pro,” says the 24 year old of the decision to leave the amateur ranks. “I don’t like the pitter-patter stuff. I want to go in there and finish it off.” The transition hasn’t been easy, especially the demands of train- ing to become a pro. He works two jobs to help make ends meet, installing doors and windows through the week and picking up extra shifts on weekends providing security for hospitals. Before work and after, he’s in the gym training. A second fight is already in the works, scheduled for the Bell Centre in Montreal some time in April. SUBMITTED PHOTO AJAX -- Brandon Cook of Ajax will be making his pro boxing debut on Saturday at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The Motor City Boxing Club member will take on Quebec’s Francis Lafreniere in the opening bout of the card that will feature five fights. AIR PISTOL Gold for Akow at Canada Games HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- The Canada Winter Games has yielded a gold medal for Jordan Akow. The Ajax resident and Matthew Kao of Toronto combined to win first place in the team air pistol shooting competition. The Ontario duo finished in a tie for first with a Quebec team, each with 1073 points, but Akow and Kao were awarded first on a countback tie breaker. An Alberta team won the bronze medal. Akow is an international target shooter. In 2010, he placed first at the Canadian shooting nationals in the junior men’s category and qualified for the Junior Olympics in Singapore. SOCCER Ajax United Avalanche needs 1997-born players AJAX -- The Ajax United Avalanche 1997 girls’ CGSL team is looking for a few players to complete their roster for 2011. This is an open tryout and keep- ers are welcome. Contact coach Grady at 416-737- 0493 for more information, or visit www.ajaxunitedavalanche.webs.com. GYMNASTICS Strong showing for Durham gymnasts at provincial qualifier MISSISSAUGA -- Athletes from Durham Gymnastics Academy attend- ed the men’s first provincial gymnas- tics qualifier in Mississauga recently. Ryan Del Genio, of Ajax, compet- ing in the Level 5, 16-year category, placed second overall. He also won six silver medals on the floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high-bar events. Chris Weiler, of Whitby, and Dan- iel Newth and Neil Maatta, both from Ajax, competed in the Level 3, 13yrs + category. Weiler placed eighth overall and won the gold medal on the pom- mel horse event. Maatta and Newth also competed well, finishing 10th and 13th respectively. Based on their performances, the boys are well on their way to qualify- ing for the provincial championships in April. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 18, 201118 AP FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2011 Ajax & Pickering Locations FRIDAY FLYERS If you did not receive your News Advertiser/flyers OR you are interested in a paper route call Circulation at 905-683-5117. Yakura is finishing his Grade 12 year at London Steveston Secondary and trains at the ClearOne Olympic Badminton Acad- emy in Richmond. At 17 years old, it was a very tough decision to leave his family and all his friends at Dunbarton High School in Pickering, but the chance to train with many of the top Canadian players in B.C. was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. Last month, though, Yaku- ra was back near his home- town to compete in the Ontario Senior Elite event. Yakura entered events in the singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles catego- ries. In the singles, Yakura went up against Joseph Rogers, but fell short, losing 21-14 and 23-21. In men’s dou- bles, Yakura and his partner Brian Prevoe knocked out Tommy McKee and Sergiy Shatenko 21-19 and 25-23 and followed that up by beating Philippe Charron and Pieric Langlais Gagne 21-13, 21-13 to reach the semifinals. Their run would end there against the sec- ond-seeded team of Toby Ng and Jon Vandervet, as Yakura and Prevoe fell 22-20 and 21-19. Results for the mixed doubles were not provided. The next event for Yaku- ra was back in Toronto, the Canadian national cham- pionships, held at Humber College Jan 27-30. In sin- BADMINTON Yakura competing all over the map gles play, he lost to Timothy Ma, while in mixed dou- bles, partnered with Chris- tin Tsai, he faced the top- ranked team from Alberta in Toby Ng and Grace Gao and came up short. In men’s doubles, paired once more with Prevoe, Yakura reached the semifi- nal, meeting the duo of Ng and Vandervet again. Yakura and Prevoe won the first match 22-20 before dropping the second 21-19 and falling in the third 21-15. Though his results were less than stellar at first glance, the more impres- sive part about Yakura in recent competition is that he was going head-to-head with players ranging in age from their mid to late 20s. Yakura’s next event will be in Halifax at the Canada Winter Games, represent- ing Ontario. Badminton will be played during the second week of competi- tion, Feb. 21-26. Following that, the remainder of his 2011 schedule is busy with events scheduled for Bar- rie (provincial champion- ships), Vancouver (U19 nationals), Los Angeles (US Open OCBC), Richmond (Canadian Open Grand Prix), Jamaica (PanAm U19 championships) and Tai- wan (world juniors). That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. CATHARINES -- The Durham Attack 16U girls were back at it in St. Catha- rines battling for position in the 17U top tier tourna- ment. Coming off a silver medal win the weekend before in their own age group rank- ing them second in Ontar- io, they were ready to prove themselves at the higher level. After losing a tough first match against Scarbor- ough Nemesis, they rallied against Georgetown Impact and finished second in pool play. The crossover game saw them easily beat the South County Bandits in two sets, 25-13 and 25-18. This brought them to the quarter- final match against DRVC. Durham Attack 16U lost the first set 23-25, but turned it around by winning the sec- ond set 25-18. The third set was tense, but the Attack prevailed with a score of 15-13. In the semifinals they faced the Predators, the first- ranked team. In a very close and exciting match, they lost 23-25 and 18-25. In the battle for bronze they came out strong and beat Aurora Storm, 25-19 and 25-21. This win now ranks the Durham Attack 16U girls Black team third in Ontario in the 17U age group. Not bad next to their second place ranking in their own age group. The team couldn’t have done it without the dedica- tion of coaches Kevin Helly- er and Mike Slean. Team members include Anna Aguayo, Brianna Brunt, Tay- lor Bursey, Jaime Fryer, Ash- ley Hart, Julie Longman, Olivia Michaud, Layton Risto and Kristine Yan. SUBMITTED PHOTO DURHAM -- The Durham Attack Black 16U team is ranked third in Ontario after win- ning a bronze medal at a tournament in Welland. VOLLEYBALL Attack step up a class HOCKEY Daniels leads Laurier into playoffs OSHAWA -- Success or fail- ure in a playoff series gen- erally comes down to goal- tending. And that should be no different this week for the UOIT Ridgebacks as they take to the ice in their first- round OUA men’s hockey series against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The series is a best-of- three that gets going Thurs- day night (after our dead- line) in Waterloo. Marlin Muylaert’s Ridge- backs head into the post season as the seventh- seeded team, up against No. 2 Laurier, but they’ve been playing some pretty good hockey as of late, led by the goaltending of Whit- by’s Jason Guy. He’ll have to be at the top of his game over the next few outings ,though, if the Ridgebacks hope to pull off an upset against Lauri- er and their own standout goaltender, Ryan Daniels of Pickering. Muylaert believes the series will come down to which one of the two can outplay the other. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 18, 201124 AP 201 BAYLY ST.
