And to demonstrate it, the Pickering Public Library is putting on 200 Years of Pickering Families this year to celebrate the municipal- ity’s bicentennial. “It’s a matter of telling stories of our histo- ry through the families that have lived here,” said Mr. Sabean, chairman of the Pickering Public Library board. Each month, residents can learn about a different family on the second floor of the Central Library in the display cabinet out- side of the Local History Room. Each display, which will highlight a family’s contribution to Pickering past and present, will contain arti- facts, documents and photos that have not been on display to the public before, allow- ing residents to learn more about Pickering’s unique history. “The library is very happy to be a part of Pickering’s bicentennial celebration,” said Becky George, the library’s historian. The first family featured is the Pegg family, one of Pickering’s founding families. EDUCATION Pickering principal wins Ontario library award John A. Macdonald principal named administrator of year by library association MELISSA MANCINI mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- A Pickering princi- pal isn’t just telling his students to read Canadian literature, he’s taking the challenge himself. Michael Bowman has read more than 150 books for chil- dren in the past two years, so he can make recommendations to his young students. His commit- ment helped the Sir John A. Mac- donald Public School principal land the 2011 administrator of the year award from the Ontario Library Association for his work. “Literacy has always been a passion of mine,” he said. “In this role as principal sometimes it’s challenging to connect with kids.” The Forest of Learning program is run by the association as a way to get children reading Canadian literature. Each year the associa- tion releases a list of between 70 and 80 books broken down by reading level. Mr. Bowman talks to classes highlighting certain books to pique the interest of his students because he knows the young- er set may judge a book by its cover. “Just by looking at the covers they may not pick them up,” he said. Mr. Bowman and certain staff members are designated as “experts” on the books and chil- dren can take advantage of time during the day to talk to them about the tales they are reading. “They get a kick out of that because they get to see the staff in a different context,” he said. At the end of the program chil- dren who have read at least five of the books in their age category are invited to attend a party. Last year more than 40 students were at the party. This year the response to the program has been overwhelm- ing so far, Mr. Bowman said. He is hoping to have at least 200 stu- dents at the end-of-year party, he said. “Some of these students are reluctant readers, then they start talking and engaging,” he said. Regardless of how many kids qualify for the year-end party, the program has been a success because it gets students reading for pleasure instead of just work- ing on the assigned books, he said. “We’ve made great gains,” he said. Chelsea escaped from Whitby kennel Jan. 13, $1,000 reward offered CHLOÉ FEDIO newsroom@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Neighbours of a 79-year- old Ajax woman whose Bernese mountain dog ran away have banded together to find her, dis- tributing hundreds of posters, scouring the streets and even consulting psychics. Joan Milburn’s husband, Geoff, died suddenly in September after suffering a brain hemorrhage. His dog, Chelsea, has been Ms. Milburn’s source of comfort ever since. But on the eve of Ms. Mil- burn’s trip to Dubai, Chelsea hopped the fence of a kennel in Whitby. Ms. Milburn considered can- celling the trip altogether until her neighbours promised to take over the search. Chelsea has now been missing for more than a week. “I’ve got the most amazing neighbours who’ve come togeth- er. She’s really been a neighbour- hood dog,” Ms. Milburn said in a phone interview from Dubai, where she is visiting her daugh- ter. “They’ve gone above and beyond.” A $1,000 reward is being offered for Chelsea’s safe return. Joan’s daughter, Heather Mil- burn, is quite certain the dog is alive and well. First, her psychic medium channelled the two- year-old dog and saw it pass a yellow wall. Then the psychic had a vision that someone had taken Chelsea in from the cold and given her food. Jim Tearne, who helped his elderly neighbour walk the ener- getic dog, used the psychic’s leads to look for Chelsea. He searched by a No Frills grocery store, thinking it might be the “yellow wall” the psychic sug- gested. But no luck. Meanwhile, Jennifer Kirkpat- rick, who has lived next door to Ms. Milburn on Farrow Crescent for the past eight years, has also contacted a psychic friend about Chelsea. “Her read on it is that Chelsea is inside of a home. What she is tell- ing me is that these people love the dog and they’re really friend- ly to the dog — they’re not going to hurt the dog — but they may not know what to do,” she said. “This is so devastating for every- body involved. We’re a very tight- knit street.” The nine-hour time difference between Ajax and Dubai adds to the dog owner’s stress. Heather Milburn said she’s been checking her e-mail in the middle of the night for updates. “My mom has never lived on her own before,” she said. “She was married to my dad for 54 years. She went straight from liv- ing with her sister to being mar- ried so the dog was pivotal in terms of company and being a big physical presence so she didn’t feel like she was alone in the house. For the dog to be gone is a huge void in her life.” Anyone with information about Chelsea’s whereabouts is asked to call either 905-427-3013, 289- 314-9971 or 905-242-6637. -- Chloé Fedio is a reporter for the Toronto Star durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 4, 20115 A Want to know what’s happening in Ajax? There will be six teams of six to eight dogs and they’ll take people for free rides around the baseball diamond behind the McLean Community Centre. “Parents and small children can ride together, and other than that it’s one person per sled,” said Ms. Warth. There will also be wagon rides for $1 per person. The Town has also prepared an outdoor skating rink which will be open for free skating to music from a DJ. At 1 p.m., there will be a 20-minute ice skating show with four professional skaters. Other activities include inflat- able rides and snowshoeing hosted by the Optimist Club of Ajax. To replenish their energy, fam- ilies can purchase snacks at the Frosty Cafe for a nominal fee or head inside the community cen- tre for some free hot chocolate. “I just want people to know they can come indoors and warm up,” said Ms. Warth. “There are indoor activities. The library is hosting crafts, there’s face paint- ing, family bingo.” The snow expected this week will improve the conditions for Winterfest and Ms. Warth said she’s expecting a good turnout. “We’re definitely expecting 3,000 people. The weather is looking perfect for the day.” Parking for Winterfest is avail- able at the McLean Communi- ty Centre, the nearby plaza and at St. Jude’s Catholic School on Coles Avenue. And that’s exactly what local histori- an John Sabean is planning as the sto- ries of Pickering families are brought to life through unique displays at the cen- tral library branch. Mr. Sabean, chairman of the Pickering Public Library Board, believes the people who historically populated Pickering, and the stories of their lives, provide a glimpse into what shaped the community and how their contribu- tions are linked to today. Each month, Pickering residents can learn about a different family that once called Pickering home, descendants of whom are still living here and active in the community. First, there are the Peggs, one of Pick- ering’s founding families who settled here and went on to contribute great- ly to the growing rural community a century ago. The family established a schoolhouse to teach basic literacy and numeracy skills to local children. One of their children, Milton, served as a First World War pilot and later became the first Pickering resident to use a combine in his farming opera- tion. Another son, Edgerton, worked a dairy farm. His wife, Betty, remains on the farm to this day, providing an unbroken link from a century ago until today. In that context, Pickering is much more than a collection of architectural landmarks, or sepia-toned photos from another era. It is a fluid and living com- munity with many family roots that run deep and which remain connected and interconnected through the genera- tions. Here’s hoping that Pickering resi- dents take stock of what’s being offered as the city celebrates its bicentennial anniversary this year. By learning more about our shared past, we can look to the future with common purpose and common goals. Take the time to visit and learn about earlier settlers who came to Pickering to till the land, edu- cate their children, and to contribute to the Pickering that exists today. It’s not necessarily about the past, however. We can learn from histo- ry, improve our effort, avoid making the same mistakes. Today’s successes, today’s achievements, today’s contri- butions will one day be another chap- ter in our shared history. -- Pickering News Advertiser For governments who fear free speech and organized protests, the world of social media is the ultimate bogeyman. When the current unrest started in Egypt, the government clearly knew that sites like Facebook and Twitter would be a key tool for protesters to organize and get their message out to people around the world and they made an unprecedented move, shutting down Internet and cellphone ser- vice to almost the entire country. In the online world, Egypt was suddenly a black hole last week. “In a fundamental sense, it’s as if you rewrote the map and they are no longer a country,” Jim Cowie, whose company tracks Internet traffic, was quoted as say- ing. In making this draconian decision, the Egyptian government had more than a year of political history in the region to reference. The first time social media was a major factor in social unrest was during Iran’s Green Revolution in the summer of 2009. Because of the power of social media in the hands of protesters, the world was able to hear directly from the people what was going on in a notoriously locked-down country. There was no filter through state controlled media or American 24-hour news channels with pre-established talk- ing points. Before the protests in Egypt kicked off, there was a surge of activity on anti-gov- ernment Facebook pages. When they were silenced, it didn’t take long for Egyptians to find a way to get their message out. They turned to an older tech- nology, dial-up, to access the Internet and companies in places like France rushed to provide service, setting up phone numbers Egyptians could use to connect. Governments around the world slammed the government-imposed blackout and the White House was quoted as saying the people of Egypt have a right to access their social networks. And even without the ability to live tweet, the protests grew. Frankly, in a country where it’s significantly cheaper to buy a cellphone than to use a landline, for many families no cellphone means no phone, period. The lack of service likely fueled anger more than soothed it and ultimately the government realized this and began restor- ing both cellphone and Internet service. Still, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter were blocked. And that’s when Google stepped in with its speak2tweet service, which allowed Egyptians to call a number to leave a voice mail message. The message would then be posted online and a link to it tweeted at twitter.com/speak2tweat and tagged with #egypt. English translations of some of the messages are available at twitter.com/ aliveinegypt. So, it’s clear, even if a government shuts down social media, it cannot shut down the people’s voices. As net freedom activist John Gilmore remarked in Time magazine: “The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.” --Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. News Advertiser THE durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 4, 201114 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com durhamregion.comEntertainment ART AND ARTISTS Jessica Field: the future is now Pickering native showing unique work in Oshawa MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It’s hard to pin Jessi- ca Field’s work down. Is it mechanized sculpture? Sto- rytelling? Social commentary? Science? Philosophy? The answer is all of the above and more. The Pickering native and Oshawa resident is exhibiting her creations at The Robert McLaugh- lin Gallery. Jessica Field: Parabolic Behaviours runs to March 20. The show features mechanized models that play music and tell a story, robots and even posters. Field describes herself as a multi-disciplinary artist, inter- ested in artificial intelligence and mass media. But if you think she unreservedly worships technol- ogy and treats it with the utmost seriousness, think again. “I’m a walking contradiction,” she says. “I like to show how great technology is and make fun of it.” Humour is a big part of her work. She “likes to make robots that don’t work,” as seen in her Field Studies series. Field says it’s based on the vacuum robot that cleans a room while you have your feet up watching TV, a device she describes as “not very smart.” Her three robots on display “have social problems” and “never do what I want them to.” Field’s mes- sage, at least in part, reflects her scepticism about technology: it has its place, but it’s not the answer to everything and it has its flaws. A fascination with electronics began early, when her parents bought her a game where one could make gadgets. Field made a burglar alarm for her room when she was eight. Largely self-taught in this area, she says the Internet is a great tool when it comes to learning how to build something or part of something. Looking at her Parable of the Strawberry in the exhibition, an accompanying video shows the device operating and tells us the story, which begins with ‘a man walking in the forest who encoun- ters a tiger that begins to chase him’. There are also mock-ups that Field used before building the actual models. On The Musicians model, one can see Field think- ing as she works, as she’s written, “make pianist’s gear 1/2 size to main shaft so he plays faster.” While it all might seem very un- art like to a gallery goer expect- ing to see landscape paintings, it’s cutting edge stuff. “It’s actually a very new art con- nection that’s been happening in Canada for the past 30 years,” she says. It’s artists reflecting what they see happening, as they have always done, but in this case by using a more appropriate medi- um. So, if Field is talking about and commenting on technology, it becomes the medium. “(Canadian artists) are very well known in Europe for this kind of work,” she says. Both Field and exhibition cura- tor David Aurandt note that artists reached a place after the midway point of the last century where they asked themselves, ‘what do we do now?’ Change was coming, but the road ahead for artists was untravelled and there were no maps indicating where it went. As it turned out, part of the answer was to create works that did not fit into traditional defini- tions of art and, in Field’s case, for example, blurred or eliminat- ed the boundary between art and science, or art and philosophy. “Jessica’s one of those artists who suggests what that change meant,” Aurandt says. In 1997, while a Pickering high school student, Field received the gallery’s Landers Scholarship. She has exhibited locally at Whitby Station Gallery and in Toronto, Montreal, Switzerland and Austria. As for the future of technol- ogy, Field’s not making any pre- dictions about what it will mean to our world 20 or 30 years from now. “I’m not sure if people are get- ting more sceptical (about tech- nology) now,” she says. “There’s definitely a charm to it. I do wish people appreciated it more and understood it more.” Learn more about Field and her work at www.jessicafield.ca. FAST FACTS Fun with Robotics If you think Jessica Field’s work with robots is cool, study with her and get your hands dirty at two free workshops on Feb. 12 at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery. The end result will be a self-oper- ated machine called an automata. The first, Grandparents and Grand- kids, is for the six to eight years crowd, with adult accompaniment, from 9 a.m. to noon. The Teen Robotics Workshop, for ages 12 to 16 years, is from 1 to 4 p.m. and “investigates basic robotic concepts based on 18th century principles using common household materials. The end result... a fire-breathing dragon.” Pre-registration is required. Call the gallery at 905-576-3000, ext. 114. Nana’s Naughty Knickers is running at Herongate Barn The- atre until March 26. “It’s very funny,” says Marion Reid-Clarke of Bowmanville. “I play an 83-year-old grandmoth- er and my granddaughter is coming to live with me over the summer. I am actually running a business where I make lingerie for senior citizens.” It’s not just the apparel that’s naughty in the Canadian pre- miere of Katy DiSavino’s come- dy. Nana’s making the lingerie in her New York apartment. But it’s a business on the side as there are no tax dollars going to the government. To make things even crazier, her landlord is always trying to evict her and a friendly cop seems to have his eye on Nana’s granddaughter. “It’s just a fun play where me and my sidekick, Vera, she finds out (about the lingerie) almost as does my granddaughter and all heck breaks loose,” says Reid- Clarke. She got into theatre around 20 years ago after her husband died. “I didn’t know what to do with myself,” Reid-Clarke says. I felt like I had to keep myself busy.” She sang in a choir and decid- ed to join some friends who were trying out for a Whitby Courthouse Theatre play. “I auditioned and I got the part,” she recalls. But Reid-Clarke didn’t know then that it was the start of a long association with the the- atre. “I didn’t realize I would enjoy it so much,” she says. “I never did (theatre) in high school or anything like that.” She now does three or four plays a year and has also been seen on the Class Act Theatre stage. Reid-Clarke for five years has been performing once a year at The Acorn Dinner The- atre in Wallaceburg. Nana’s Naughty Knickers also features Rose Green and Don Green of Pickering, Martin Kalin of Whitby, Paul Francies and Margaret St. John of Stouffville and Alyssa Mariano and Lisa Goodwin of Toronto. Herongate is at 2885 Altona Rd., between Taunton and Whitevale roads in west Pickering. For tickets and more informa- tion, visit www.herongate.com. For instant confirmation on the current week’s reservation, telephone reservations are rec- ommended. Call 905-472-3085 or 1-866- 902-9884. RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND PICKERING -- From left, Rose Green, Alyssa Mariano, Martin Kalin, Lisa Goodwin and Marion Reid-Clarke perform a scene from Nana’s Naughty Knickers. The show runs to March 26 at Herongate Barn Theatre. Cast features Ajax actor MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It definitely runs against the grain, but Rick Kerr is hoping to stage a bad production in Oshawa. He’s directing Play On!, running to Feb. 12 at Oshawa Little Theatre. “The play is about an unfortunately tal- ented theatre company doing an unfortu- nately written English murder mystery by a person, it’s her first effort and she’s not an accomplished author,” Kerr says. His biggest challenge in this “comedy verging on farce” is to convince talented actors, set designers and others involved in the production to come up with “less than their usual standard.” Because, let’s face it, everybody’s instincts lead in the opposite direction, namely doing the best they possibly can. The play contained within Play On! is a bit of a mess and there’s no guarantee things will turn out right. In the comedy’s first act, Kerr explains, it’s four days before opening night and warning signs are flashing everywhere. “The play’s in trouble, the production’s in trouble and the author keeps coming in with re-writes,” he says. The second act is a dress rehearsal and “nobody’s confident they’re going to pull it off.” To the utter consternation of the actors, the author wants to change lines, even add characters, when it’s definitely too late to do so. But she’s seemingly oblivious to the uproar she’s causing. “She doesn’t get it; she’s a loose can- non,” Kerr says. The third and final act is a complete run through of the play within a play. Play On! features Paul Nadeau, Judith Edmondson, Krista Gingell, Casandra Whyte and Cathy Partridge of Oshawa, Deb Lobban and Tracy Rankin of Whitby, Jordon Tremblay and Joun Fitzgerald of Courtice and Cheryl Tulloch-Van Vliet of Ajax. Oshawa Little Theatre is at 62 Russett Ave. Tickets are available online at www. oshawalittletheatre.com, at the theatre box office and at United Way Information Services kiosk in the Oshawa Centre. Naiman from 1977 to 2007 was a Toronto Sun reporter and was frequently heard on radio and seen on TV. “She entered the blogosphere in April 2008 when the Toron- to Star invited her to create her mental health and wellness blog, Coming Out Crazy, for the Healthzone.ca launch,” states a press release. “When, on its second anniversary, The Star dropped the blog, Sandy promptly launched her own Coming Out Crazy blog independently. Dr. John Grohol, CEO and founder of 15-year-old PsychCentral.com, quickly picked it up. These days she is blogging exclusively.” The 8:30 a.m. meeting is at the Ajax Con- vention Centre, 550 Beck Cres., just north of Hwy. 401 (Salem Road exit). Pre-reg- istration is required and the deadline is noon on Feb. 9. Register online at www.wcdr.org, by phone at 905-686-0211 or by e-mail at breakfast@wcdr.org. After the breakfast meet- ing, for an extra $10, those at the breakfast can take part in a mini-workshop, Writing for Reluctant Readers, facilitated by children’s author Erin Thomas. Topics include storylines, tech- nical considerations, outlines and teachers’ guides. Instead of the mini-work- shop, those at the breakfast meeting can pay $10 to attend a 15-minute, one-on-one blue-pencil session with a published pro- fessional or editor. Pre-registration is also required for the mini-workshop and blue-pencil session. SANDY NAIMAN BOOKS AND AUTHORS Pickering native breaks OCAA career scoring record SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com TORONTO -- Landis Doyle says she isn’t one to crave attention under the big spotlight. Most times, though, athletes don’t have much of a choice in the matter. Take the situation Doyle found herself in last week as a prime example. In her fifth and final year with the Humber Hawks’ women’s vol- leyball program, Doyle was clos- ing in on setting a new OCAA all- time mark for career points and the campus was buzzing. “They had quite a setup for me that day,” recalls the Pickering native. “There were posters set up around the school and things online telling people to come check out the game because Lan- dis is going break the scoring record. There were a lot of peo- ple there. People were holding up signs as a countdown to me breaking the record. My family was there and some of the girls I played with before. “It was kind of an overwhelming experience because I am not used to being in the spotlight like that. I don’t like it too much. But this was fun, though, kind of a surreal experience,” Doyle adds. And she didn’t disappoint en route to the record, setting the new mark in the first set of Hum- ber’s 3-0 victory over the Cones- toga Condors Jan. 26, passing the previous mark of 1,035 which was held by Megan Stacey of Nipiss- ing. Doyle entered the match need- ing just seven points to top the record books and was happy to get things over in a hurry. “My setter said she’d try and give me as many balls as she could in the first set so we could get it over with and take some of the pressure off,” she said with a laugh. “Everyone that was there was just waiting for it to happen.” She finished the match with 13 points and added another 12 in a win over Sault last weekend. Setting such a mark wasn’t something Doyle ever thought would happen when she landed at Humber after her high school days at Dunbarton. In fact, it wasn’t even until the record was brought to her attention earlier this season that she knew how within reach it was. “That was really the first time I had thought about it. It was never anything like I had a goal to do it,” she says. “I came here to do my best and win championships with my team. This is definitely a bonus in my last year.” As the three-time defending OCAA champions (2007-08, 2008- 09, 2009-10) Doyle and the Hawks look to be well on their way to another this season. They cur- rently sit on top of the provincial standings as the only undefeated team remaining, owners of a 17-0 record with five games to go. Before that, though, Doyle will be subjected to the spotlight once more. Next Wednesday, prior to their final home game of the reg- ular season, the Hawks will retire Doyle’s No. 8 jersey. “It’s completely flattering and overwhelming. I was just really honoured,” Doyle said of when she found out about the ceremo- ny. Already the general manag- er and serving as an assistant coach in the team’s first year of operations in Major Series Lacrosse after moving up from the Sr. B ranks, St. John will now be fully in charge of the opera- tion, taking on the title of head coach. “We always had me in the background as taking over if we didn’t get a good enough candi- date,” said St. John of taking on the dual role of general manag- er and head coach. “When we didn’t find that, it made sense for me to step back behind because I have done it before.” When Jim Veltman, who served as head coach last sea- son, resigned from the team, St. John and owner Rob Roche dis- cussed some options for filling the vacancy behind the bench. When there was minimal inter- est from a head coach outside the organization, the two decid- ed to reinstate St. John as the head coach, a role he had prior to Veltman taking over behind the bench. There was a huge learning curve last year, as the expansion Rock won just three of 16 games, bowing out in the first round of playoffs to Six Nations in the league that also includes peren- nial powerhouses Peterbor- ough and Brampton, along with Kitchener-Waterloo and Brook- lin. St. John says this year’s edi- tion will continue to build on the foundation of last year, with some modifications. “We want to run and gun and play up-tempo lacrosse,” began St. John. “The thing we want to do, we have to get bigger. We’ve got to add some size, get better up front, so that will be our one and two priorities for the draft. “We have to be tough. We’re going to have to play rough and tough at times. We didn’t do that last year. We were pushovers, I don’t like to say that about any team I coach or am part of, but we got pushed around a lot. We really got pushed around badly in the playoffs by Six Nations. We’re not going to allow that to happen again.” The Rock hold the third and fourth overall picks in the draft, slated for Feb. 13 in Whitby. They also protected four Jr. A players from the Toronto Beach- es, including Robert Koger, Daniel Hamlett, Reid Acton and goaltender Shaun Palmer. Three of them, Kroger, Hamlett and Acton, were dealt to Orange- ville late in the season, helping the Northmen to the Minto Cup championship game. While dates haven’t been offi- cially set, St. John expects train- ing camp to begin early April. A schedule is expected to be released by the end of February. VOLLEYBALL Doyle makes her point JES RAYMOND / HUMBER COLLEGE TORONTO -- Landis Doyle of Pickering recently set a new record for career points in OCAA women’s volleyball. Doyle is in her final season with the Humber Hawks. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 4, 201118 AP Rotary Club of Ajax Recollections The Rotary Club of Ajax will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary on Thursday, March 17, 2011. HOCKEY Panthers blanked in Peterborough Lose 4-0 for sixth loss in a row PETERBOROUGH -- The Pickering Panthers are having a hard enough time winning games, but when they don’t score, their fate is sealed. That was the case Tues- day night in Peterborough, as the Panthers dropped their sixth game in a row, falling 4-0 to the Stars. It was the 12th loss in the past 13 games for the Pan- thers, who have one win and a pair of shootout losses over that stretch. The Panthers were down 1-0 after the first and 3-0 through two, as goalten- der Ryan Carlisle faced 38 shots on the night while the Panthers had 25. The Panthers gave up a short- handed goal in the second and a power play goal in the third. With a record of 10-33- 3, the Panthers host North York (27-16-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and head to Wel- lington (36-6-4) on Sun- day. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 4, 201119 P PUBLIC NOTICE PROPOSED WIND MOBILE 40-METRE STEEL SHROUDED TELECOMMUNICATIONS TOWER SITE LOCATION SUBJECT: • Wireless steel shrouded tower, 40 metres tall and will occupy an area of approximately 0.0029 hectares. • Location: 2465 Brock Road North, City of Pickering. VOLLEYBALL Durham Attack Black ranked third in Ontario DURHAM -- The Durham Attack 16U Black girls’ team brought home its third medal in three tournaments. After a bronze-medal fin- ish at the McGregor Cup Premier tournament in Welland, the team is now ranked third in Ontario in its age group. The team finished a con- vincing first in pool play, despite the absence of veter- an setter Brianna Brunt. The team beat both the Ottawa Mavericks, last year’s East National champions, and ongoing rival DRVC. Pool play featured strong hitting by Jaime Fryer, Ashley Hart and Christine Yan. They met the tall Toronto Diamonds in the quarter- final match, beating them in two close sets 25-22 and 26-24. The semifinal pitted them against the strong Defensa team. After winning the first set 25-19, they were unable to hold their lead, losing the next two sets by small mar- gins. Excellent setting by Olivia Michaud and tough blocks by Anna Aguayo, Tay- lor Bursey and Layton Risto almost put them through to the gold-medal match. The girls played a strong bronze-medal match, win- ning against the Toron- to Interclub Black team in three sets. Julie Longman displayed incredible defen- sive skills as libero.
