The owner of the Pickering-based Life Design, offer- ing life coach and facilitation services, sat down with the News Advertiser to share some tips on how to get 2011 started off right. She’s been coaching personally for six years, four in a corporate environment at a bank and two as a life coach at her business. Life coaching, popular on the west coast, has been growing in popularity in Ontario in recent years. She said life coaching can benefit people of all ages and looks toward the future and a myriad of things such as fulfilling goals, mending relationships and basic life management skills, but doesn’t delve into the past. Pickering Fire Services was called to the Emerald Point condos at 1655-1665 Pickering Pkwy. at about 12:15 p.m. Jan. 19. Platoon chief Rick Ingram said the fire occurred in the garbage chute area in the basement and firefighters dragged it outside and extin- guished the fire. No evacuations were necessary, but he noted most people were already outside anyway. “The smoke that came from it came up quite a few floors and they had to ventilate,” Mr. Ingram said. No one was injured, but a superintendent was checked out and cleared for smoke inhalation. The damage is estimated to be about $5,000 and the cause is under investigation. FIRE Pickering garbage blaze canned KRISTEN CALIS / METROLAND PICKERING -- One person was taken to hospital following a collision at the intersection of Dixie and Glenanna roads on Thursday, Jan. 20. The driver was extracted from the car by Pickering firefight- ers on the scene. POLICE Children uninjured following Pickering accident PICKERING -- Two children involved in a car acci- dent in Pickering Thursday morning were unharmed, according to officials. “One person required extraction,” said Captain Harold Davis of Pickering Fire Services. Police, ambulance and firefighters were called to the accident, at the intersection of Dixie and Glenanna roads, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20. Witnesses at the scene said a white Buick was eastbound along Glenanna Road when it collided with a grey Grand Prix heading south along Dixie Road. As a result of the T-bone collision, the Buick jumped the curb, but no pedestrians were hit. “Somehow we just collided,” one passenger said. Sgt. Nancy van Rooy said witnesses who called in the accident referred to it as “a head-on collision.” Due to the impact on the driver’s side of the Buick, the senior driver had to be extracted from his vehicle. He was taken to hospital as a precaution when he complained of chest pains, said Sgt. van Rooy, adding the two children in the back seat accompa- nied him but were not injured. “A witness stayed and comforted the (kids in the back seat) until fire and ambulance arrived,” said Police Constable Darrell Maciver. The cause is being investigated. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 21, 20114 AP 401 HWY. 2 KINGSTON RD. PORT UNION RD. WHITES RD. LIVERPOOL RD. 10 MIN. SCARBORO TOWN CENTRE 10 MIN. Give a KZ Kitchen for Valentine’s Day!! Advertising Feature When it comes to new year’s resolutions, although many people make them, she said people have a difficult time staying on track. It’s important that people first decide why it is they have a certain goal, such as losing weight. “Make sure the reason is for themselves, not any other reason,” she said. Then, people should set daily, week- ly and monthly goals. Writing the goals down, as well as keeping track of achieve- ments, is a good motivator. “It boosts your motivation and makes you feel good,” Ms. Harrison said. Setting rewards, such as a nice dinner out or plans to buy a nice dress, usually helps people achieve their goals. Ms. Harrison keeps a vision board and recommends making one to all of her cli- ents. “I think everyone should have one,” she said. A vision board is a visual tool, usually a collage, of the things people want in life. The boards are believed to attract those things and to make people feel good when looking at them. Ms. Harrison suggested including both long- and short-term goals when making vision boards. To create positivity in one’s life, she sug- gested making time for oneself every day, such as taking walks before work in the morning. It’s equally important that peo- ple think of things they’re thankful for on a daily basis. For those who feel their life is in “auto- pilot” mode, she suggested changing two things about their daily routines. Exam- ples could include driving a different route to work, drinking a different kind of coffee, reading a book instead of a newspaper or saying something different to their loved ones. Most life coaches, including Ms. Harri- son, offer a free session so people can see if it’s right for them. “You really have to feel a connection with a life coach in order for it to be successful,” she said. Immediately, eyes were on Apple stocks to see the impact of the announcement. In the past, the value of Apple stocks has fall- en after an illness announcement from Mr. Jobs. So how can one person be so integral to such a large corporation? One analyst noted this week that Apple is in the business of creating products consumers don’t know they want, and that requires strong vision from the top. The news of Mr. Jobs’s absence was tem- pered by the fact that Apple announced at the same time that its net income jumped 78 per cent compared to the same time last year due to strong sales of iPhones and iPads. Both devices have proven to be extreme- ly popular, as was the launch of the iPod in 2001, which represented the beginning of Apple’s renaissance under the leadership of Mr. Jobs. As a company, simplicity is one of Apple’s trademarks. Regardless of what’s going on inside one of its devices, the experience for the user is simple and functional. This means its products have broad appeal beyond gadget geeks. Another strength is adaptability. With an almost endless number of apps available, users can customize their experience. Of course, there’s a symbiotic relation- ship between hardware manufacturers like Apple and social media heavies like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and, like Apple, those companies can only grow by giving users what they didn’t know they wanted and simplicity and adaptability are key concepts. For example, whenever Facebook refines its interface, users cry about the chang- es. But few end up giving up on the site because of them and most learn to like it more. It’s no small thing to anticipate what the public wants. The Internet graveyard is lit- tered with startups that just didn’t work for consumers. Anyone remember flooz.com and beenz.com? Asinine attempts to cre- ate an Internet currency when consum- ers could simply use real dollars to shop online. Investors lost millions on those projects. And even when a company gets things right initially, there’s no guarantee it will continue to do so. Remember when the place to hang out online was GeoCities? Or MySpace? Even the slightest annoyance can drive people away, and it’s a fine balance between giving them what they need and making a buck. Finding the balance between providing users with a service and monetizing a site (through ads or user fees) is the biggest challenge. In the world of social media, there are hundreds of companies looking to give consumers what they need. But among them is only a small group of success sto- ries that got it right. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. Contact her on Facebook, Twitter (@rszekely) or e-mail at rszekely@durhamregion.com Reka Szekely Secret to online success: anticipating what the user needs ‘New’ GM is now open for business in Durham Region Out with the old and in with the new. That’s a particularly fitting sentiment as 2011 stretches before us while Gen- eral Motors continues to remake the corporation after emerging from bank- ruptcy. GM Canada president Kevin Wil- liams took that message to the Great- er Oshawa Chamber of Commerce to share the philosophy and corporate goals of the ‘new’ General Motors in Oshawa. And given the collapse that came in lockstep with bank bailouts and unprecedented housing foreclosures in the U.S. the company’s turnaround in just over two years is all the more remarkable. A successful new share offering was introduced in 2010, rais- ing billions for the corporation, new vehicles are being produced, jobs have returned to Oshawa assembly lines and the new GM’s focus will be on innova- tion and customer service, Mr. Williams told local business leaders at the event. To those who may still be holding on to hope for a resurrection of traditional GM business practices and systems -- not to mention now-worthless shares -- Mr. Williams offered a blunt assess- ment: “That company will die.” In that context, Mr. Williams has set the tone for the new GM, a company that won’t be focused solely on com- petitiveness or being better than the other carmakers, but the best. To date, those ideas have manifested themselves with activity on the shop floor: laid-off workers have returned to produce Buick Regals, Chevrolet Cama- ro convertibles and Chevrolet Equinox crossover vehicles while new oppor- tunities will be available with Oshawa being one of seven launch sites for the extended-range, electric-powered Volt hybrid later this year. New vehicles in production for the corporation include the Sonic and the new Spark, expected to hit showrooms in 2012. So far, GM has hit the ground running with fresh energy, a successful share IPO and a focus on innovation and cus- tomers. If this is the new corporation, it is firing on all cylinders and will once again grow and prosper, contributing immensely to the economic prosperity of Durham Region. As demand grows, so will profitability. And, as success breeds success, relat- ed automotive supply firms will once again create new employment oppor- tunities for residents from Pickering to Newcastle and north to Scugog. The new GM might look a lot like the old one from the outside. But this excit- ing new approach from the corpora- tion is being done from the inside out. That’s the difference. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 21, 20117 AP durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 21, 20118 AP VIJAY BADHWAR, DMD Dental Care for Adults, Kids and Great Big Babies. • A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. The husky was surrendered by her owner, who said he could no longer care for her, and the dog continues to wait at the shelter for a loving home. She’s one of the dogs surrendered or picked up in Pickering in the past few weeks. Shelter workers are used to caring for and adopting out a large number of cats on a regular basis, but Animal Services supervisor Lindsey Narraway was surprised when a handful of dogs were at the shelter at once. “For a lot of the other shelters, that’s normal for them,” she said. Pickering cared for more than 100 dogs in the shelter in 2010. All have found homes except Adka, a five year old that looks and acts like she’s two, Ms. Narraway said. “She’s used to children, she’s used to other animals. She lived with an iguana,” she said. In a nearby room, abandoned and stray cats were also waiting for someone to take them home. Sinbad was found roaming the streets on Dec. 23 with a collar embedded deeply under- neath a front leg. It appeared to shelter workers that he had tried to get his collar off and it got stuck. It was so deep the vet had to surgically remove it. Sinbad was “skin and bones” and looked like he’d been on the streets for ages, but after some food and attention, he quickly began to fatten up and is now ready for a new home. Cat occupancy numbers are usually low in the winters, but “it’s been unusually high this year,” Ms. Narraway said. Being passed around from home to home can become both mentally and physically tough for the animals, she said -- they often lose their appetites, for example -- so it’s important those looking to adopt don’t make decisions on a whim. “They need to make sure the type of breed they’re looking for matches their lifestyle,” she said. People should also be prepared for usual pet costs, and also for unforeseen costs such as emergency trips to the vet. She added new adopters should keep in mind that it can take a little while for the animals to warm up to their new owners, so patience is a must and crate training for dogs is suggested. And pet owners should licence their furry friends to make for easier reunions if they get lost.It costs $150 to adopt a dog and $100 for a cat. All animals are spayed or neutered, have all necessary shots, have been microchipped and come with a pet licence. Pickering also includes six weeks of free pet-care insurance. JAN. 29th Moody’s points to sound financial planning DURHAM -- When it comes to Dur- ham Region’s credit rating, things aren’t A-OK, but rather they are tri- ple A-OK. Moody’s Investors Service has reconfirmed the triple ‘A’ credit rat- ing for Durham. That’s good news for taxpayers, as the rating, the highest possible, means lower borrowing cost, says Jim Clapp, Durham’s finance com- missioner. The savings aren’t only at the Regional level, as Durham issues debt for the municipalities, he notes. “Interest rate on borrowings could be as much as a half a basis point lower than others can bor- row,” he states in an e-mail. “Since we have had triple A, total interest savings has been about $25 million, a substantial savings to taxpayers.” Durham received its first triple ‘A’ rating in 1979. In a report to Regional coun- cil’s finance committee, Mr. Clapp pointed to comments made by Moody in keeping the rating. “The reliance on long-term finan- cial planning helps the region- al municipality to identify and address fiscal challenges before they arise and ensure the post- ing of consistent, positive financial results.” Keeping debt levels manageable and maintaining reserve funds and paying as much as possible up- front for capital projects are other reasons for Moody’s decision. “While Durham has experienced some pressures on its social assis- tance budget as more people have accessed these programs during the recent economic downturn, the regional municipality has made allowances in its budget to accom- modate this.” The Region is one of only seven communities in Canada to have a triple ‘A’ credit rating. The Clarington actor has lost 160 pounds in the last two years, so he’s no longer an ideal candidate to play the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard Of Oz, as he did in Whitby in 2007. However, it remains his favourite role. “I’m glad I did that one when I was a big guy,” Libbey says. His next role is as Inspector Ruffing in Dur- ham Shoestring Performers’ Ravenscroft, running Jan. 21, 22 and 26 to 29 at the Arts Resource Centre, 45 Queen St., Oshawa. “It’s a thinking man’s play, it’s very enter- taining, not your typical murder mystery,” Lib- bey says. “There is a lot of comedy in here and even some ele- ments of farce at a couple of moments.” The setting is an English country manor in 1905. The only man living with five women at Ravenscroft Manor is dead after a fall and Ruffing must figure out what happened. But it’s easier said than done. “The five women are quite literally lying their pants off to keep him from knowing or understanding the truth,” Libbey says. It turns out that the Inspector is actually getting everyone’s perspective of it. “They’re all try- ing to hide what they believe is the truth,” he says, add- ing the theme becomes, “what is the truth and how do we see it?” Libbey says playwright Don Nigro “has written a series of plays that basi- cally all dovetail together” and Inspector Ruffing has appeared in four of them. “He’s a bit of a Sherlock Holmes kind of guy,” he says. “He’s the kind of guy who in some cases can put people off because he’s so matter-of-fact about everything and so analytical.” While Ruffing “can appear not to have much of a personality,” he does have a past. “He has a history of lots of unusual circumstances and situations,” Libbey says, referring to references in the play that “he’s gotten himself into trouble” before. Originally from Fredericton, Libbey caught the acting bug in high school after “following a girl” who was into the- atre. He also discovered his second love, accounting, and when it came time to choose between the two for universi- ty, he followed his “gut feeling” and opted for accounting. Needing an outlet, and after seeing a casting call in This Week , he got back into theatre and now does one or two plays around Durham each year. Ravenscroft also features Raissa Chernushenko of Oshawa as Mrs. Ravenscroft, Oshawa’s Amy Park as her daugh- ter, Gillian, Erin Hagen of Oshawa as Marcy, Gillian’s foreign governess, Oshawa’s Laurie Scattergood as housekeeper/ cook Mrs. French, and Lynda Krasevec of Bowmanville as Dolly, the maid. John Lunman of Oshawa is the director. Tickets are available from the United Way Information Services Kiosk at the Oshawa Centre or at www.durhamshoe- string.org. A closing reception for the show will be held on Jan. 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the library. You can see the art during regular library hours when the Rotary Room is not in use. Susan has a secret in Whitby production MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- A play making its world premiere is in the second weekend of its run in Whitby. Class Act Dinner Theatre pres- ents the comedy What is Susan’s Secret? from Jan. 14 to Feb. 26. Director Glenn Ottaway says you’ll have to come and check it out to learn what the secret is. The setting is a country inn that Susan and Michael, a couple in their 70s, have owned for some time. And they’re willing to give a discounted rate, a huge savings, if a guest chips in and does some of the badly needed work the place requires. “It’s a rundown hotel some- where in the United States,” Ott- away says. “They have a handyman’s spe- cial every week which gives 90 per cent off. The catch is there’s fine print when people sign in.” He says there are three scenes in the play and each features a different set of handypeople and/ or guests. Each of the characters is odd in their own particular way, Ottaway says. Four of the six cast members have triple duty, playing three characters each. The cast features Jim Renshaw (Michael) of Oshawa, Alex Sav- age-Ferr (Susan) of Whitby, Cour- tice’s Linda Chapman (three char- acters), Graham Gauthier (three characters) of Whitby, Rob Nott- man (three characters) of Oshawa and Whitby’s Mireille Awad-Arn- berg (three characters). Class Act Dinner Theatre is at 104 Consumers Dr. in Whitby. For tickets and more informa- tion, call 905-668-2229 or visit www.class-act.ca. The tag Christian graffiti artist might seem a little counter-intuitive or con- tradictory but that is precisely what life- long Pickering resident Jeff Goring calls himself. When one thinks of graffiti, one envi- sions the spray paint tagging and vandal- izing of public property by young ne’er- do-wells. And Goring will admit that early on, in his late teens, he participated in this ille- gal marking of buildings and fences and train cars. However, after returning to his family’s Christian roots and enrolling in a pro- gram with a Pentecostal seminary, Jeff simply “asked God” to provide appro- priate places to create his art and has since been given opportunities to cre- ate murals, paint private works on can- vas, provide graffiti paintings for movie and TV productions and to market lines of hand-painted hats and silk screen T-shirts in his singular style and motifs. Goring took art at Pine Ridge Second- ary School, but it was a hook up with a musician with several CDs to his credit -- who encouraged his graffiti doodling -- that got him seriously started. He also began breakdancing and became so good that he was engaged by the East Shore Community Centre to give lessons to local youth. He was eventual- ly hired by the City as youth coordinator, in charge of putting together programs of activities for kids and teens. His wife, Charity, runs a dance group and he often accompanies her on junkets to international events in which she is a participant. His own dancing and art has taken him to gigs in England, Sweden, Norway and widely across North America -- often to meet-ups with other graffiti artists with whom he co-creates murals on collabor- ative themes. So what are the painting themes of a religious graffiti artist, you may ask? Well, Goring does the standard elabo- rations on names (his company name is Sonz of God) and he has added Biblical scriptures and imagery (the Book of Rev- elations is a great source) to his reper- toire. He enthuses about the step up in tech- nology of the paint “bombs” that are now available -- paints that are in a kaleido- scope of colours and that spray thick and solid without running. See his work at sonz1.wordpress.com and check out hats and T-shirts at www. sonzofgod.com. Allan O’Marra is a professional artist living and working in Ajax. That’s the bond Joe and Paul Ramieri share as they wind down the Ontario Junior Hockey League season with the Pickering Panthers. The brothers are a long way from home, opting to pack their bags and hockey equipment to leave their home in Rhode Island to come to Canada to play junior hockey, hoping to parlay the experience into a scholarship back in the United States. For Joe, the older of the two at 20, it’s the second time around for him. It was his sense of adventure that eventually led to the broth- ers landing on the same team for the first time since their minor hockey days. A couple of years ago, Joe was at a boarding school in Con- necticut, playing in a summer tournament in Boston called the Chowder Cup, which serves as a showcase for junior players aged 16-20. He played a game against a team coached by former NHLer Jerome Dupont, who took a lik- ing to what he saw from the defenceman. After auditioning at another tournament in front of Dupont, Joe was signed to play with Aurora, eventually moving over to Vaughan. He returned home last season to play in the Eastern Junior Hockey League with his hometown South Shore Kings. But for his final year of junior eligibility, he wanted to come north once again, bringing his brother in tow. “I decided for my last year, I wanted to come back up here,” he says. “It’s a good league, good coaching. They take care of the players so it was definitely a good option for me.” The Ramieris settled on playing for Orangeville, but a trade early in the season brought them to Pickering. Having been away from home for boarding school and to play hockey, the transition wasn’t tough for Joe. “For me, I grew up two years ago when it was my first time here,” he recalls. “This year I’m trying to be more of a counsellor for my brother. He obviously got a little homesick when he first came up here. He’s never been away from home.” While Paul, who is two years younger at 18, admits it was tough at first, he has no regrets about moving away from home to play hockey. “It was tough at first because it was my first time away from home,” he says. “Once you get used to the surroundings and get used to playing hockey every day, you get used to it. It has been a blessing in disguise.” As for having big brother with him, it has helped smooth over any tough times. “It’s really nice,” he admits. “He’s a great teammate, a great leader and you can learn a lot from him.” While head coach John Good- win can’t ever recall coaching brothers during his career behind the bench, he says the two have made a positive contribution to the Panthers this season. “Paul, he’s probably down on himself because he’s not put- ting the numbers up he could, but he’s a skilled kid. Maybe next year he will put bigger numbers up. “Joe, he’s a leader, a real gung- ho guy.” In 36 games this season, Joe, a defenceman, has 0-9-9 point totals, while Paul, a forward, has 4-3-7 numbers in 35 games. Next season, the brothers will go their separate ways once again, with Joe planning to enroll at an NCAA Division-3 school to play hockey, while Paul wants to return to Pickering, eyeing a scholarship down the road. HOCKEY A long way from home JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND AJAX -- Joe and Paul Ramieri are brothers from Rhode Island who play junior hockey with the Pickering Panthers. BASKETBALL ESN gets back into the win column AJAX -- ESN packaging got back on the winning track after a couple of tough losses as they defeated Dickson’s Print- ing 53-44. The two big men for ESN, Phil Guth- rie and Kitson Wallace, were solid on the boards and led the offensive attack with 19 and 11 points respectively. A shorthanded Dickson’s squad were led by Derek Kent with 18 and captain Frank Spagnuolo with 14 points. The undefeated Top Shelf continued to roll as they knocked off the Right Step 69-49. The Shelf once again received balanced scoring with seven of eight members contributing. Point guard Cal- vin Smith once again was a force with 20 points. Nick Sideris and Nick Mikos added a dozen each in support. Stephen Johnson and Mickey Dill hit for 15 points each, while Rob Hare had 13 in a losing cause. With the Right Step losing, North Alliance Press jumped into second spot in the league with a win over Michael’s Eatery 51-33. Captain John Beyaz led the way with 11 points and Tim Lane was close behind with 10 for NAP. Claude Whitfield with 12 and Gregg McGuire with seven led Michael’s, the struggling defending champions. Blue Skies, Grey Geese post wins AJAX -- The Portly Piper enjoyed Blue Skies and led 14-12 after a rather unevent- ful first half in a Ajax Ladies Recreational Basketball League game. A stormy second half saw both teams shooting double bonus and three players fouling out: Lucrishua Grant and Anita Pol- son for the Blue Skies and Maria Crome for the Portly Piper. Orange Bugayong (12 points on four treys) and Lucrishua (12 points with four from the line) led the way for the Blue Skies. Lauren Corkum (nine points) chipped in for Blue Skies shoot- ing five of six free throws. Sarah Nyberg replied for the Portly Piper but was unable to get to the line in this game. The Piper’s inability to convert free throws proved the difference as the storm cleared for Blue Skies to pull away to a 39-32 win. In the second game, the Grey Geese found their wings clipped as three players were out due to injury and illness. Despite this, they took a commanding 25-10 lead as Green Energy may have suffered post- holiday energy drain. The Energy picked up a bit in the second half with an addi- tional 15 points led by Jennifer McDonald and Monica Leung, both with 11 points. The Grey Geese were led by Pamela Wilkinson (28 points) and Juline Thurton (14 points) to a 43-25 win and remain undefeated on the season. AGE GROUPS JIM EASSON On Feb. 6, 2010, at the eight-team OCA Ontar- io bantam championship in the Gananoque Curl- ing Club, the Annandale team of Ben Bevan, Carter Adair, Jake McGhee and Corey Gaudette with Jen- nifer McGhee coaching, captured second place and advanced to the Ontario Winter Games. The Games were held in Gravenhurst from March 4-6 and the Bevan rink was victorious in a tie- breaker game for the gold medal and advanced to the Canada Winter Games which are to be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from Feb. 11-27 this year. The Canada Games are a national event for pro- vincial-level athletes who are pursuing development toward national and inter- national competitions. The team is scheduled to compete during the Feb. 19-26 window. The Annandale men’s team of Mark Kean, with Chris Van Huyse, Patrick Janssen and Tim March, won enough to be invit- ed to join the BDO Cana- dian Open scheduled for the GM Centre in Oshawa, from Jan. 26-30. The BDO Canadian Open is one of the four men’s majors that highlight the World Curl- ing Tour season. Team Kean will also head to the 2011 Ontario provin- cial curling championship Dominion Tankard to take place in Grimsby from Feb. 7–13. Annandale member Alex Bianchi coached the win- ning Clancy Grandy rink in the Pepsi ladies’ junior provincials Jan. 5-9. Play- ing out of the Kitchener Waterloo Granite, Grandy’s team is made up of Sarah Wilkes, Laura Crocker and Lynn Kreviazuk. The team, including coach Bianchi, now advances to the M and M Meat Shops Cana- dian juniors to be held in Calgary Jan. 29 to Feb. 5. The 116th running of the TCA bonspiel, now called the Goldline, ran across Toronto Jan. 8-15. In this spiel, two games are played on the first Sat- urday, and then Monday it is win or you are out, and that scenario continues all week. The best showing for Annandale out of five teams competing was the Dale Patterson foursome who went to Wednesday night in the senior’s draw. The rest of the team was Ron Zuber at vice, Paul Mills at second and Bob Delaney at lead. Next on the Annandale Curling Club bonspiel list is the Robbie Burns Mixed Funspiel for Saturday, Jan. 22. The bonspiel is full with a waiting list. It advertises two six-end games of curl- ing, lunch followed by off- ice games, dinner, dance and prizes. Team Glenn Howard will be looking to defend their Ontario title at the 2011 provincial curling championship Dominion Tankard to take place in Grimsby from Feb. 7–13. They won it last year and get a bye directly into the championship. This Ontario champions team consists of Glenn How- ard with Pickering resi- dent Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill playing front end. The next competition for them is the BDO Cana- dian Open scheduled for the GM Centre in Oshawa, from Jan. 26-30. CURLING COLUMN Annandale team off to Canada Winter Games HOCKEY Generals trio fit in at Top Prospects game SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com TORONTO -- The atmo- sphere was dull and the building not anywhere near capacity, but that didn’t stop three Oshawa Generals from savouring their experience at the Home Hardware CHL/ NHL Top Prospects game in Toronto Wednesday night. It was quite the opposite actually for Boone Jenner, Lucas Lessio and Nicklas Jensen, though more so for the first two considering their Team Orr laid a 7-1 beating on Jensen’s Team Cherry in the annual showcase of best Canadian Hockey League players eligible for the NHL entry draft. “It was a fun experience. To play in this game was a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity and to win was great,” said Jenner, who picked up a pair of assists on the night, play- ing on Team Orr’s top line between Vladislav Namest- nikov of the London Knights and Jonathan Huberdeau of the Saint John Sea Dogs. “I thought I played pretty well and it was neat to play with all the different players.” The Generals second- year pivot set up goals by Huberdeau, making the score 3-0 in the second, and Nathan Beaulieu, putting Team Orr up 4-1 early in the third. Jenner said his line was able to form some semblance of chemistry throughout the night due to their familiarity with each other as Namest- nikov plays in the OHL and Jenner and Huberdeau were once linemates at the U18 tournament. The key to being able to capitalize on that chemistry was borne out of Team Orr’s ability to weather a first-peri- od storm where they were outshot 13-3. The lone first- period goal came off a short- handed breakaway by Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for- ward and former No. 1 over- all OHL draft pick Daniel Catenacci, who played on a line with Lessio and Kelow- na Rockets forward Shane McClogan. A native of nearby Maple, Lessio said the experience really opened his eyes as to the type of talent spread across the country. “It really puts into perspec- tive the amount of talent that is out there,” he said after- wards, standing outside the Toronto Maple Leafs’ dress- ing room. “These top 40 prospects are all unbeliev- able and just shows that you have to work hard every day to elevate your game and be better than that next per- son.” Lessio has been elevating his game in that same sense recently with the Generals, thanks in large part to the play of linemate Jensen, who was held off the scoresheet for Team Orr and was expect- ing some good natured rib- bing from his Oshawa team- mates when they got back into town. “There is probably going to be a bit of chirping back in Oshawa,” Jensen said with a chuckle. “There was a little bit on the ice too, but it’s all fun. I don’t care about that. It was a great experience here.” Considering he didn’t even know about the game until a couple of weeks before being chosen, Jensen said he’ll take the good with the bad, noting he was happy to play under the bright lights and that he’ll have to accept whatever verbal jabs come his way over the next few days. Overall, the game had a little bit of everything from eight different goal scorers to a few big hits and even a sec- ond-period fight. Jenner and Lessio, mean- while, received a little post- game praise from their Team Orr coach Doug Gilmour, who holds the same post with the rival Kingston Fron- tenacs. Gilmour -- and Brampton Battalion coach Stan Butler -- enjoyed, if for one night only, to have the likes of those two on their side. “Stan and I were talk- ing about it on the bench a couple times,” Gilmour said. “It’s amazing when you have players on your team what you see they can do com- pared to when you’re play- ing against them and see- ing kind of a different role. I really enjoyed that side of it. They are both very talented players.” durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 21, 201119 AP 20112011 99 thth Annual Annual Admission $5 Children FREE Show Hours Friday 4pm-9pm Saturday 10am-5pm 12 & Under For more information contact Cam Hreljac or Tim Prout @ 905-579-4400 chreljac@durhamregion.com tprout@durhamregion.com Fax: 905-579-2742 Friday, Feb. 18Friday, Feb. 18 th th & & Saturday Feb. 19Saturday Feb. 19 thth WIN YOUR OWN 32 PERSON GOLF TOURNAMENT PROVIDED BY UOIT Athletic Centre Stop Sign 401 Simcoe St.Taunton Rd. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation.
