Mr. Anderson confirmed he had signed off on the agreement on Thursday, less than one week after the provincial Environ- ment Ministry approved the environmental assessment for the facility. “I think the current council spent four years dealing with this issue. It’s been read by I can’t tell you by how many people. It’s been peer reviewed by the Region and peer reviewed by Clarington. For 18 months, it was reviewed by the Province of Ontario, the minister of the environment. They all said it’s correct and will operate the way we say it will,” Mr. Anderson said. When Regional Council approved the energy-from-waste facility, it gave Mr. Anderson authority to sign the contract with Covanta Energy without coming back to council for approval. “It’s my obligation as chairman to do what council tells me to do,” he stated. The facility will also take trash from York Region. During its final meeting of the council term on Thursday, York Chairman Bill Fisch said he had also signed the agree- ment. “After speaking with Chair Fisch, our CAO, our finance commissioner, our works commissioner, our legal team here and in Toronto, there was no reason for me not to sign,” Mr. Anderson said. “The job of the chair is to do the will of council and that’s what I did.” With the agreement now signed, the next step is the site plan process with Clarington. Construction would start next year with the facility ready to operate in 2014. Covanta Energy will design, build and operate the facility, which carries a price tag of about $270 million. Some winners in the recent municipal election had wanted Mr. Anderson to hold off on signing the agreement until the new Regional council could examine the deal. New councillors will be sworn in on Dec. 8. “Don’t think I signed this without speak- ing to a great majority of them,” Mr. Ander- son said. December 3, 2010 314 Harwood Ave. S., Ste 206 Ajax L1S 2J1 Eastern flavour to Dralion MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion rolled into Oshawa on 342 wheels. Nineteen 18-wheelers carried costumes, props, equipment and everything else needed to put on the show, at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa until Nov. 28. The troupe even has its own washing and drying machines. “We’re almost like a little village, I like to think,” says Sean McKeown, Dralion’s artistic director, on rehearsal day Nov. 24. On a backstage tour, the GMC seemed a scene of bustling chaos as artists warmed up and prac- tised, makeup was applied, clothes were dried and props and costumes were set out. But while bustling is appropriate, after a few minutes it becomes clear that this is a finely tuned machine. Dralion is Cirque du Soleil’s merger of its own avant-garde style with Chinese acrobatic arts. First performed in 1999 in Montreal, it toured for a decade in big tops before being re-invented as an arena show. Fifty-two artists from around the world, half of them from China, perform the 10 acts that comprise Dralion. And it’s McKeown’s job to maintain the artistic quality and integrity of everything an audience sees on stage. He says the goal isn’t to achieve a certain level of excellence and duplicate it, but “to raise the bar every night. “One of the great things about my job is working with the artists themselves,” McKeown says. “To do what we do takes a lot of discipline and joy.” He says Cirque du Soleil set out “to re-invent the circus” and in doing so is now competing with itself. Around a corner behind the stage, Han Yuzhen from China is practising her single-hand bal- ancing act. She obliges when asked to continue, effortlessly lifting her body off the ground and demonstrating her incredible strength and flexibility. Dralion publicist Julie Desmarais explains most of the Chinese performers in the show went to a Chinese circus school back home and were a part of a circus. She notes that just two of the Dralion performers have been there since the show began, as the Montreal head office “search- es the world for new talents” and new artists are always coming on board. As rehearsal day progresses, more artists come in and begin their work. Before long, those who perform the hoop diving act appear on stage, launching themselves through the small wooden hoops. They are soon joined by the artists who do the Diablo, or Chinese yo-yo, a new Dralion act, described as “a children’s game which involves holding two sticks linked by a string while sliding, juggling and tossing a wooden spool.” Playing the game becomes harder and harder as the artists try to top one another by executing more and more difficult manoeuvres. There’s still lots of time to see Dralion, which is performed Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 27 at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 28 at 1 and 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the General Motors Centre Box Office, by phone at 1-877-436-8811, online at www.generalmotorscentre.com or at the United Way Information Kiosk at the Oshawa Centre. All content copyright AP ENERGY Added fees push prices of electricity way up To the editor: I have had my smart meter since early this year, or maybe last year, I don’t remember exactly when it was installed. Anyway, my most recent bill from Verid- ian still does not include pricing based on the smart meter, in spite of the fact I can go onto the Veridian website and see my exact usage by various time-of-use rate periods. Also, I have heard nothing about when it will start. Why is there silence on this? In other words, right now there is no incentive for anyone in Durham Region to try and use off-peak energy usage. Secondly, there is so much hype about how much we will pay per kilowatt hour of electricity, but people are being fooled by the way the bills are being broken down. Based on my last bill, although the elec- tricity usage was billed at 7.5 cents per kilo- watt hour, the other add-on charges of debt reduction, delivery, regulatory and, finally, the harmonized sales tax drive my real out- of-the-bank price per kilowatt hour to 12.8 cents. So, let’s get it straight: I and everyone else are really paying about 12.8 cents per kilo- watt hour for electricity in Durham. Don Dorward Pickering ALLERGIES Post-secondary schools should also be peanut-free To the editor: Adults with peanut allergies are not safe in colleges and universities. Schools expect adults to be aware of their own allergies. Some colleges and universities do not have an individual health-care plan and an emergency action plan. Peanut allergies are very serious and if an EpiPen is not available, they can cause death. When going into an allergic reaction, sometimes that person has no clue what is going on and everyone around would also be clueless. Colleges and universities should all be peanut-free. An incident happened in my college not too long ago where someone had an aller- gic reaction to peanuts just from being in the classroom. He had two allergic reactions within two weeks. When he let the school know, nothing could be done about the issue. Although peanut allergies cannot be stopped, they can surely be prevented at institutions where we learn. Everyone deserves an education and everyone deserves to be safe while they are doing so. People with peanut allergies don’t deserve to be stressed at school, they have a right to be able to concentrate on learn- ing. Every school should be declared peanut- free. Police officials issued a record-high number of drunk driving offences -- 21 in total -- in the first week of their annu- al RIDE campaign during the festive season. That’s nearly double the num- ber of similar charges brought during the first week of last year’s campaign. Those are sobering numbers and they have spurred Durham police Chief Mike Ewles to order his RIDE teams to work ever more aggressively to fight the scourge of impaired driving. But RIDE and regular patrols notwith- standing, police simply can’t be every- where. It therefore falls to each of us to make appropriate decisions around travel and the tendency for some to imbibe a little more liberally during the Christmas season. Mindful motorists, too, have an obli- gation not only to practise safe and sober driving, but to be aware of those who are sharing the road with them. If you suspect a drunk driver is behind the wheel, pull over and make your suspicions known to police. There are too many stories of loss and catastrophic injury associated with impaired driving. Too many families have been forever altered, too many children left without mothers, fathers or close relatives. Though it’s true that the incidence of impaired driving has been reduced considerably through education and strict legislation in the last generation, this week’s numbers indicate a step backward, perhaps a creeping apathy surrounding the issue. Durham Regional Police officers must not only continue to aggressively patrol and set up spot checks to remove impaired drivers from local roadways, Chief Ewles should consider expand- ing them throughout this festive season and well into the new year. This time of year should be about fel- lowship, reconnecting with those clos- est to us, celebrating the season and looking forward to a new year and the promise that it holds. The RIDE program is a visible and important reminder that when you drive in Durham, you must drive safe- ly and responsibly, with care for those sharing the road with you and without alcohol impairing your ability to do so. When you head out on local roads this Christmas season, make sure you’ve made arrangements to get home should you indulge in drinking, desig- nate a driver, or spend the night. Don’t contribute to the horrible sta- tistics. Don’t become one. This year, the YMCA of Greater Toronto recognized nine out- standing leaders in the commu- nity and Ms. Johnston was one of them. She was awarded the medal- lion at a special ceremony at Dunbarton on Tuesday. Although the recipient knew two students had nominated her for the award, she was sur- prised and excited to learn she had won. “I’m just overwhelmed really,” Ms. Johnston said after receiv- ing the award. She’s the teacher liaison for IMPACT, the school’s Christian council, which organizes the annual Salvation Army fund- raiser. Santa Cause. Students of all backgrounds work together in various ways to collect items to donate to the charity in time for Christmas. But Ms. Johnston said while IMPACT initiates the annual fundraiser, the entire school gets involved, and she said it’s really the students who get the ball rolling. “Although I received the award, it took all of them to make me look good,” she said. She said it’s amazing to see the work that’s done at Dunbar- ton, and attributes much of it to respect. “Our biggest success in the school is we respect one anoth- er,” she said. Each student council orga- nizes events for Santa Cause throughout December, such as a students versus teachers hockey game and a swim meet. Teachers also donate items to and participate in a staff silent auction, and keep donation boxes in each class to encour- age students to donate canned goods, with a little bit of incen- tive, of course. “The top class gets a pizza lunch,” Ms. Johnston said. She explained Santa Cause originally began in 1993 when IMPACT was called Youth Alive. The students started canvassing staff and students for donations to the Salvation Army, and it’s grown tremendously over the years. “It’s not a one-box thing any- more,” she said. She feels all schools have the ability for success in their fund- raising efforts, adding kids just need a little push in the right direction -- and a pat on the back doesn’t hurt either. “You give a kid respect, you’re going to get respect,” she said. By the time the Christmas season rolls to an end at Dun- barton, the students feel great about the good they’ve done for the community, and the Salva- tion Army fares quite nicely as well. “It overwhelms me every year when I leave that school for the Christmas holidays,” Ms. John- ston said. “We all have a warm heart.” She has been at Dunbarton for the past 10 years. The YMCA also recognized Ms. Johnston for her role in Sunday school programs at her church, and participation in the Rainbow program for students who have lost a parent or are dealing with their parents going through divorce. 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 www.furnituregalleries.caOSHAWA * Credit equal to the value of the HST. Authorities report that a con- struction waste bin was removed from a work site on Regional Road 12 in Cannington around 8 p.m. on Nov. 18. The dark green bin held waste materials removed from a former public school. Police say the thieves grabbed more than just a small quantity of copper piping and copper cabling from the work site. Bags of asbes- tos and 161 ballasts containing PCBs were in the container, stress authorities. Police have issued a warning to the thieves, advising them of the potential dangers of the substanc- es and requesting the material be safely returned. Home Sweet HomeADVERTISING FEATURE Perhaps no holiday tradition is more visible than decorative lights. Whether on the house or on the tree in the front picture window, holiday lights help create a festive mood for all. While aesthetically appealing, holiday light- ing displays can also be quite dangerous. Older lights or poorly planned lighting projects can quickly turn tragic. However, this much be- loved holiday tradition does not have to cease and desist. Instead, some simple safety precau- tions are all it takes to ensure this year's light- ing display is both stunning and safe. - Make sure exterior lights are designed for outdoor use. Not all lights can handle the ele- ments, so those old Christmas tree lights might not be able to enjoy a second life as part of a home's exterior lighting decor. - Plug lights directly into the electrical sockets rather than relying heavily on extension cords. Employ surge protector strips if there are not enough outlets available. Before plugging any- thing in, consult the fuse box to determine how much each circuit can safely handle. - Don't use damaged lighting sets, including those with frayed strings, unstable connections, exposed wires, or broken or cracked sockets. - Make sure all external lights are securely attached. Wind can do signifi cant damage to bulbs, which can lead to additional safety risks. As a precaution, attach all lights fi rmly to walls or anything else that will not blow away when a stiff wind arrives. - Inside the home, be extra careful when us- ing an artifi cial Christmas tree. Electric lights should never be used on a metallic tree. - Routinely check all cords' temperatures. If a cord feels too hot, unplug it and fi nd a replace- ment. - Don't leave the lights on when no adults are home. If the home is empty or if just kids are home, make sure the lights are off. Avoid using timers that automatically turn the lights on, as it's possible they will turn on when no one is home. Unplug all cords when going away for the holidays just to be safe. - Make sure all cords are visible. Don't bury cords underneath rugs or fl oor mats to avoid personal injuries. - Hanging lights shouldn't be a solo project. Whether hanging lights inside or outside, never do so alone. A stiff wind might come along and blow the ladder away or an unstable ladder might lead to a fall. Accidents happen when hanging lights indoors as well, so make sure to have an adult partner on hand to avoid injury. Safety First When Stringing Holiday Lights durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 26, 201010 AP City accepting donations in lieu of fines PICKERING -- Residents who receive those dreaded yellow parking tickets from Dec. 7 to 15 won’t have to feel too bad about paying the fines. They can pay them with toy or food donations that will go to a family in need through the Dur- ham Region Police Food and Toy Drive. Most parking tickets issued in the time frame may be paid through the Toys 4 Tickets and Food 4 Fines program on two days in December. The only types of tickets not eligible for the pro- gram are those issued for illegal parking in accessible spaces. Last year, the first time the City held the program, 71 tickets were paid with food and toy donations valued at $2,200, said manager of bylaw enforcement services, Kim Thompson. “The Toys 4 Tickets and Food 4 Fines is a unique and wonderful program that helps turn some- thing negative into a positive,” she said in a press release. All toy donations must be unwrapped and all food dona- tions must be non-perishable. The value of the donations must be equal to or greater than the fine on the tickets. Therefore, receipts are required for all dona- tions. Donations may be dropped off on Dec. 16 and 17 only on the second floor of the Pickering Civic Complex, One The Espla- nade. Have you heard? durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 26, 201016 AP PHOTOGRAPHY Killer shot takes Ajax photo contest Norm and Helene Ullock awarded in Town contest MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Ajax husband and wife Norm and Helene Ullock are also partners in photography. And both did well in the Town of Ajax and Black’s Superstore 2010 Amateur Photography Contest, sponsored by the News Advertiser, with Norm taking the Best in Show Award and Helene the Best Travel photograph in the adult category. “It is fun because we help each other, ‘did you see this’, did you see that’,” Helene says. “It’s like anything you do with a partner, it’s much more fun.” The couple travels a lot, Cuba is next up, and Norm says on vaca- tion taking pictures “drives our day,” so that they’ll plan to arrive at a locale at a certain time to get the light they want in their pho- tographs. Norm has been taking pic- tures all his life, but says buying his first digital camera in 2001 “jump-started my interest in photography. “I find it an incredible medi- um to learn with,” he says. “I like playing with computers and basically a camera’s a computer in a little box.” He was on a photo outing with other photographers a year ago at a raptor centre near Sim- coe, Ont. when he snapped his award-winning photo. A View to a Kill shows a great horned owl in full flight, on its way to cap- ture a mouse put out for bait, its piercing yellow eyes focused on the prize. “Wildlife photography’s kind of a passion, so you get plugged into other photographers,” he says. Norm has entered the Ajax contest before and won awards, but this is his first best in show. Helene got into photography after she and her husband real- ized that instead of her directing what he should be shooting and how, she should just get her own camera and photograph what she likes. “I enjoy architecture, that’s my favourite thing,” she says. “For- tunately, we have travelled in Europe and they do have fabu- lous architecture in many plac- es.” Helene says her photo, Reflec- tions of Dinan, was taken in Brit- tany, France. It shows the town Dinan reflected in glass-still water. “We drove through that town and the picture presented itself and all I did was click the shut- ter and it pretty well took itself because that was the view,” she says modestly. Helene also likes shooting landscapes and taking portraits is an interest they share. Only Helene often likes to be the photographer’s assistant when Norm’s shooting the latter. “I like to set someone up,” she says. “I like to get the best out of them, to get the best picture pos- sible.” AJAX -- Ajax resident Norm Ullock’s photograph of a great horned owl, A View to a Kill, won the Best in Show award in the Town of Ajax and Black’s Superstore 2010 Amateur Photography Contest. Helene Ullock’s photograph of Dinan, France, Reflections of Dinan, won first place in the Travel, Adult category of the contest. Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com facebook.com/sportsdurhamregion twitter.com/scnewsdurhamSports durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 26, 201019 AP SPECIAL OLYMPICS Rising Stars rise to challenge 13 athletes qualify for Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- An established fig- ure skating program and strong efforts made to recruit speed skaters has paid off for the Ajax Rising Stars. The club will be sending 13 athletes and five coaches to the Special Olympics Ontario Win- ter Games in Thunder Bay from Jan. 20-23, 2011. All of the ath- letes will be representing Region 12 and qualified after competing in a number of competitions last season and accumulating enough points to be named to the team. While the figure skating pro- gram has been strong for a num- ber of years, the speed skating program has come a long way in a short time. “The coaches have worked really hard and we really made an effort to recruit new athletes to the speed skating program,” says Debbie May, who founded the Ajax Stars in 1997. “The speed skating program had always been three, maybe four athletes. This time there are 11 in the pro- gram.” Six members of the speed skat- ing team will be strapping on the blades to compete against the best in the province in Thun- der Bay, while seven figure skat- ers will be perfecting their rou- tines in the coming months in anticipation of the competition. Two speed skating coaches and three figure skating coaches will accompany the athletes. The figure skating side of the operation has enjoyed tremen- dous success over the years, and boasts a world champion in its midst. Erin Ryneerk won a world title, while Ashley May, Deb- bie’s daughter, has competed at nationals twice, earning a gold and two silver medals for her efforts. This particular group, with members ranging in age from 14 to mid-30s, is a good mix, with some competing on the provin- cial stage for the first time, while others have been there before and know what to expect. “Every single skater is dedicat- ed to competing,” says May of the reason behind the success. “They are working extremely hard. They all have picked up one, if not more, additional days of ice time, but that comes with a cost.” In addition to ice costs, the speed and figure skaters also pick up the tab for off-ice train- ing and competition uniforms. Those costs can add up, which is why the club has been busy with fundraising efforts to help alle- viate the financial burden. An LCBO day and another event at Texas Burger have already been staged. The club is also looking for sponsorships. “Most of them are on a fixed income. The majority are above 18. That doesn’t go very far at all,” says May. “That’s part of the rea- son why we are non-stop fund- raising. “I don’t want people to think these are athletes that don’t real- ize the value of a dollar. They do. They just don’t have very many dollars.” The Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games will welcome more than 400 athletes and coaches, with the potential to qualify and advance to the nationals in Alber- ta. Athletes will compete in speed skating, curling, snowshoeing, alpine skiing, figure skating and Nordic skiing in Thunder Bay. To get involved with the club, contact May at 905-686-2538 or e-mail risingstarmom@hotmail. com. RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND AJAX -- The Ajax Rising Stars will be sending six members of the speed skating team, seven figure skat- ers and five coaches to the Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games in Thunder Bay from Jan. 20-23. FOOTBALL Glavic leads Calgary into Vanier Cup Pickering quarterback has another shot at national championship LAVAL -- Erik Glavic has spent a lot of time under centre over the years, thus it comes as little sur- prise that the Pickering quarter- back knows what he needs to do Saturday in the Vanier Cup. The Calgary Dinos signal call- er needs to protect the ball against the Laval Rouge et Or in the 46th running of the CIS national championship in order to give his team the best chance to emerge with a win. “I can’t throw interceptions against Laval. We have to pro- tect the football,” Glavic said in a press release issued by the CIS. “They have 14 interceptions in three playoff games. That’s what they do. They’re really aggres- sive and they force turnovers.” In last year’s Vanier Cup, Glav- ic threw for 354 yards against Queen’s, but was picked off twice in the 33-31 loss. But that’s in the past and after an injury-riddled season, Glav- ic appears to have found his stride once again in throwing 11 touchdowns to two intercep- tions in three playoff games. With the Dinos’ high octane offence, led by Glavic, the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School grad, going up against the equally able Rouge et Or defence, both coaches surmised that Saturday’s game should be a classic. “Their defence is very, very good. They are very athletic,” said Calgary coach Blake Nill, whose team scored 35 points or more in each of its last five games, including outputs of 40, 56 and 35 points during the postseason. “With them, it’s not just one guy. You have to be aware of all of them at all times.” Laval’s Glen Constantin added: “Our offence is a little young but our defence is very mature. “The Dinos have so many weapons, starting with Erik (Glavic) at quarterback. They are not only stacked up at the skill positions, they’re also very physical on the line. They are going to be our biggest chal- lenge of the season.” Laval allowed a paltry 6.4 points per game this season. Saturday’s game goes at 11:45 a.m. eastern time and will be shown live on TSN. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 26, 201020 AP NEWYEARSEVE2011 2700 Audley Rd. N. Joan O’Leary of Annandale will also advance to East York as a member of the Liz Winters Whitby B side win- ners in the senior women’s zone. An Annandale junior team skipped by Ben Bevan with Tyler Sagan, Carter Adair and Jake McGhee, coached by Jennifer McGhee, won the Zone 6 junior playdown held in Sutton Nov. 20-21. The B side went to anoth- er Annandale junior team, skipped by Michael Bryson with Wesley Forget, Sandy Martin and Danny Dow, along with coach Susannah Moylan. The third entry from Annandale, skipped by Nathan Scott, was side- lined. Both of the winning teams now advance to the regional at the Oakville Curling Club Dec. 4-5. The Annandale men’s team of Chris Van Huyse with Tim March, Patrick Janssen and Tyler Anderson won the Dominion Club Ontario curling champion- ship. The team is now at the Canadian championships in Prince Edward Island curling clubs until Nov. 28. Live scoring can be found on curlcast on thedomin- ioncurls.ca. Next on the Annandale calendar is the Little Rock Bonspiel Nov. 27, and then the Mixed Stakes Bonspiel is slated for Dec. 4. The defending Ontario champion team of Glenn Howard has Pickering resi- dent Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill playing front end. For the first time this curl- ing season, the team did not qualify for winnings in the Sun Life Financial Invi- tational Curling Classic, held Nov. 19-22 in Brant- ford. Next on Team How- ard’s calendar is a trip to Medicine Hat, Alberta Dec. 1-5. Wayne Middaugh will be playing vice on this trip, sparing for Richard Hart. They will play in the Can- ada Cup of Curling, which boasts 20 of Canada’s top men’s and women’s teams together. The Canada Cup will offer a total purse of $150,000, split equal- ly between the men and women, and first place is worth $25,000. HOCKEY Durham West Junior Lightning take two of three in PWHL Beat Hamilton, Aurora, lose to Oakville AJAX -- It was a busy weekend for the Durham Junior Lightning who had two road games and a home tilt all in three days. On Friday evening, the team travelled to Ham- ilton for an away game against the Hamilton Junior Hawks. The Lightning scored a goal each period, out- pacing the Hawks 3-1. Victoria MacDonald had the period one marker, assisted by SaraJane Pratt. In the second, Hamil- ton scored a power-play goal and Rebecca Ruther- ford answered that with a goal. Marissa Maugeri and Kaitlyn Mullett provided the assists. In the third, Megan Simpson scored a power-play marker assist- ed by Lindsey McDonald. Goalie Jackie Rochefort recorded the win with 15 saves on the night. On Saturday, the Light- ning travelled to Aurora to take on the Junior Pan- thers. Durham jumped to an early lead when Marissa Maugeri scored in the first period assisted by Rebec- ca Rutherford and Lind- sey McDonald. That held up until the dying seconds of the second when Auro- ra scored with just 16 sec- onds left on the clock. In the third, Maugeri hit on the power play for the win, assisted by Sara Kaljuvee and Carly Marchment. Goalie Chantal Bicket was solid in net for the win, stopping 25 shots. Sunday, the Lightning hosted the visiting Oakville Junior Hornets who stung them for a 3-1 loss. Megan Simpson record- ed the lone marker in the second period, unassisted. Jackie Rochefort recorded the loss, stopping 16 sots on goal. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 26, 201021 AP Don’t quite get it yet? We can talk you through it . Nov. 10 -- Green Energy had the goose cooked in the first half of the late game as they finished the frame up 28-22. A closer look at the first-half statis- tics showed that the Geese maintained an almost impenetrable interior defence, allowing only three baskets from inside and committing just one foul on the shot. Pumping up Green Energy was Jennifer McDonald (20 points in the half) as she hit for six treys. In the second half, the Geese were successful in shutting down McDonald, who finished the game with 24 points. This left Monica Leung open and she hit two treys in the final frame for the Energy. The Geese escaped the pot with point guard Juline Thurton (19 points) leading the way. In the early game, Blue Skies enjoyed the hos- pitality of the Portly Piper and came away with a lopsided 63-32 win. Anita Polson (18 points) had the only two treys for Blue Skies. Four players contrib- uted to the Portly Piper’s five treys, but had difficulty finding open looks. The Piper’s Kellie Bonner led all players in trips to the line and made six of six. Nov. 17 -- Green Energy narrowly beat the Portly Piper 38-37. Jennifer McDonald led the way for Green Energy with 13 points. Denise Bennett (3 points) consistently drove to the basket and helped the Piper into foul trouble by drawing fouls. Dannie Newman (10) and Kellie Bonner (8) replied for the Piper. Juline Thurton (19 points) and Melanie Wilkin- son (15) soared for the Grey Geese enroute to a 58-51 victory over Blue Skies in the late game. “Orange” Bugayong (20 points), a terrific outside shooter, provided the sunshine for Blue Skies, pro- viding six threes. Ajax Men’s League results AJAX -- It’s early, but after four games, two teams remain undefeated in the Ajax Men’s Bas- ketball League. The Right Step continued to play well with wins over Dickson Printing 47-37 and North Alli- ance Press 51-36. Roy Bailey was key again for Step, scoring 14 against Dickson’s. Veteran Don McEachern tallied 13 and rookie guard Paul Hol- land added nine for Dickson’s. Mickey Dill led the charge over NAP with a game-high 16 while team- mates Bailey and Roger Young added 10 each. Ravi Persaud was the bright spot for NAP scoring 14, big man Claude Feig had 10. The Top Shelf kept pace, winning two more, first dominating Michael’s Eatery 40-21, then Dick- son’s 45-30. The Shelf was led by Nick Mikos who totaled 23 points in the two games. Calvin Smith and Nick Sideris scored 19 and 13 respectively. In a losing cause, Claude Whitfield tallied eight for Michaels while Bill Lashley had the hot hand for Dickson’s with 10. ESN Packaging split their two games, hand- ing Michaels their fourth consecutive loss 33-28 before losing a close contest to NAP 45-40. In the win, ESN had 10 from Phil Guthrie, while Michaels’ tops scorers were Gregg McGuire and John Esposito with six each. Captain John Beyaz led NAP in the win over ESN with 15 points and Scott Poulson scored 11. Orin Taylor scored eight for ESN. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 26, 201022 AP (905) 743-4601 ext. 3151 Join the IQT experience! Diamond Shine offers both semi-drip and no-drip packages starting from $79.95 (vans, trucks and SUVs extra). To prevent your vehicle from rusting, the solution is applied to the complete undercarriage of the vehicle, the engine compartment, including the hood, all rocker panels, hinges, inside the doors and trunk. This holiday season, why not treat someone to something really special? Diamond Shine has gift certificates available for detailing packages that would the perfect gift for anyone on your list. “For that really hard to buy for person on your list, why not purchase a gift certificate for any of our packages and ask about customizing a detailing package that’s right for your vehicle? Save the back breaking work to us,” says Joanne Elawar of Diamond Shine. “We offer a wide variety of packages starting from as low as $19.95.” It’s called detailing for a reason. At Diamond Shine, their showroom package leaves no small space untouched. To achieve a showroom look, they use toothbrushes and Q-Tips to get to the hard to reach areas. They only use the best products, to ensure superior results. If you’ve just purchased a brand new vehicle, don’t pay the expensive cost of the dealership package, give Diamond Shine a call for a quote! “We want to thank everyone for putting their trust in us for the past 16 years, including both our loyal customers and the many dealers in the area,” says Joanne. “We would also like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and we look forward to seeing all of you in the new year!” Diamond Shine is open for business all year round, even if it’s just for a hand wash and dry. Diamond Shine is a family owned and operated business that has been serving the Durham Region since 1994. Diamond Shine is located at 221 Westney Rd.
