The Pickering resident and president of the Ajax-Pickering chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada was recently diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, specifical- ly ulcerative colitis, after suffering the symptoms for years. IBD is comprised of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, similar but distinct condi- tions which cause intestinal tissue to become inflamed and bleed easily. Patients experi- ence symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue and diarrhea that is often urgent and unexpected. There is no cure or known cause for the disease and one in 160 Canadians suffer from it. “Raising awareness about it is still the biggest challenge because it is embarrassing,” Mr. Marche said. After an awful four-month flare-up with the illness when the young father and invest- ment advisor couldn’t leave the house for more than 10 minutes in fear of an accident, he chose to get involved in the foundation. ‘Can’t wait’ app See NEW page 12 Introducing the Bell Turbo Hub. Put On Your Gas Bill Three charged, including an Ajax man, in alleged home invasion JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- A young man standing trial on charges of participating in a home invasion took the witness stand in his own defence Tuesday, testifying he had no intention of committing a robbery when he went to an Oshawa apartment with a buddy. James Park said he and Damian Sergeant were looking to “make change” -- earn some cash -- by selling crack cocaine when they went to the Malaga Road apartment of Tammy Lewis at about 3 a.m. on March 30, 2009. “I didn’t know exactly where we were head- ed but I knew what we were headed for,” Mr. Park, 21, of Ajax, testified at the Oshawa courthouse. Mr. Park, Mr. Sergeant and a third defen- dant, Matthew Dunbar, have pleaded not guilty to robbery, break and enter and forc- ible confinement in connection with what the Crown says was a home invasion at Ms. Lewis’s apartment. Jurors have heard the men were avenging a drug rip-off pulled by a friend of Ms. Lewis’s. But jurors have also heard from two wit- nesses -- Mr. Park on Tuesday and, earlier in this trial, from Crown witness Trevor David- son, Mr. Park’s older brother -- that there was no plan to rob Ms. Lewis. Rather, they have testified, tension mounted when Mr. David- son demanded Ms. Lewis pay a drug debt. When Ms. Lewis tried to make a call, one of the men pulled the phone cord out of the wall, jurors heard. But the 911 call went through and Durham police quickly responded to an unknown trouble call, arresting the four men at the scene. Mr. Park’s version of events differs from that provided by Ms. Lewis, who said the four men forced their way into her apartment and manhandled her when she tried to flee. During the trial, jurors have heard a record- ing of Ms. Lewis testifying in an earlier court proceeding. She was murdered in December of 2009 in what police described as a domes- tic incident. Mr. Park told his lawyer, Gina Da Fonte, that prior to the night of the arrest he’d never been at the Malaga Road apartment, and had never met Ms. Lewis. He said he and Mr. Ser- geant arrived at the apartment first, and that the two other men, who had been drinking at a nearby bar, showed up later. He testified that Ms. Lewis allowed all of the visitors into her apartment and never demanded they leave. Mr. Park denied a suggestion by prosecutor Mitchell Flagg that the men arrived together, intent on committing a robbery. The trial, before Superior Court Justice Jane Ferguson, continues. Saturday, November 6, 2010 1-4 p.m. Trafalgar Castle School 401 Reynolds Street, Whitby www.castle-ed.com Isa Nilsson-Byberg was ‘nice to everybody’ while a student at Uxbridge Secondary School UXBRIDGE -- Students at Uxbridge Sec- ondary School and members of the school community are mourning the death of a classmate killed in a car accident Saturday. Students are remembering Isa Nilsson- Byberg, 17, of Claremont, as a lovely young woman who was “nice to everybody.” The teen died following an accident at Davis Drive and Concession 3 Oct. 30, when her Honda Civic collided with a GMC Sier- ra being driven by a 57-year-old Uxbridge man at 7:30 a.m. A passenger in the Honda, a 19-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Sierra and his passenger, a 13-year-old girl, were treated and released for minor injuries. This week fellow students painted Isa’s locker as a tribute, while the Canadian flag flying outside of the school remains at half- mast. “When I heard the news, I was so sad and shocked that it happened to some- one I knew,” said Vanessa Broderick, a for- mer classmate of Ms. Nilsson-Byberg at Uxbridge Secondary. “She was very funny and artistic and she was always nice to people,” she said. A makeshift memorial with flowers, plants and candles was placed at the intersection as a tribute. School principal Lucy Black said grief counselling has been set up as well as a book of memories where students have written their condolences and shared their thoughts and memories of Isa. “We are working hard to support her friends and those who knew her,” said Ms. Black. She said there is also a resource available on the Uxbridge Secondary School web- site to help guide parents with the grief pro- cess. A memorial celebration will be held for Isa at 1 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Claremont Com- munity Centre. Isa’s parents are request- ing that everyone in attendance wear “fun, bright colours” to celebrate her life. Please call for your Invitation Neonatal data collection may help predict infant’s catastrophic health problems before they happen MELISSA MANCINI mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Carolyn McGregor has gone through the pain of losing a newborn. Now her research at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is dedicated to helping other babies born prematurely. The devastating event prompted the Aus- tralian researcher to question what her exper- tise in data informatics, which she previously used working at banks to help organizations monitor business performance, could do to identify patterns in health care. What if data collected from premature babies could predict a catastrophic health problem in an infant? That’s a question Dr. McGregor, who has a PhD in computing sci- ence, has been working on the past three years as a Canada Research Chair in health informatics at the university. Her baby had a rare chromosomal disorder which meant she could not be saved, said Dr. McGregor. “But there are many babies born early that have a real shot at life,” she said. Her research collects data from the tiniest patients in neonatal units at SickKids hospital in Toronto and Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. Information such as heart rate and respi- ration rate are transmitted to Dr. McGregor’s lab, where the researcher and her associates look for patterns so health professionals can predict changes in a baby’s condition quickly and change the course of care if necessary. A baby’s heart can beat more than once a second. This sort of data cannot be collected manually and creates a landslide of informa- tion every day, which is why the lab is neces- sary to analyze it, she said. Soon there will be even more babies involved. Dr. McGregor is working on agree- ments to collect data with another hospital in Canada and hospitals in Australia and China. Her research is attracting so much attention in the international medical field, she has not had to seek out new locations to collect the data. “We haven’t had to look for these new sites ... they came to us,” she said. “The doctors are coming to us.” The research has also attracted attention from computer giant IBM, which helped develop advanced software for the lab and made a commercial about the research proj- ect, which is currently on TV. Dr. McGregor can’t say much about her research findings because the study is ongo- ing, but she’s optimistic about the data so far. There is enormous potential in this proj- ect to save lives, Dr. McGregor said. The baby that she lost may not have been saved by this monitoring, but she thinks there are many infants born prematurely who will make it if patterns can be established. Her work could one day lead to medical breakthroughs in pre- dicting the health condition of a fetus during pregnancy and create conditions for healthier outcomes, particularly in premature births. With a PhD in computing science and years of work experience in the dense world of data informatics, not to men- tion a personal tragedy involving the premature birth and loss of her own daughter, Ms. McGregor brings a keen focus and deep knowledge to the task. The work being done at the UOIT lab has sparked interest from hospitals around the world -- including Australia and China -- that specialize in obstet- rics and neonatal medical care, which will expand the sources of data and help researchers such as Ms. McGregor translate her findings into new thera- pies. Her project has also seen partici- pation from global computing giant IBM, which helped develop sophisticat- ed software to process the reams of neo- natal data. That such work is being done at a university in Oshawa would have been unimaginable just a few short years ago. But the promising research that Ms. McGregor is doing, along with other complex UOIT research projects that touch on such areas as clean hydro- gen fuel production, for example, will continue to underscore the evolution in Oshawa and Durham from a manu- facturing economy to one whose foun- dation is in knowledge. And the recent opening of a permanent Trent Universi- ty campus here at home helps build on and drive the ongoing transformation. Early indications in Ms. McGregor’s research show that, as she notes, there is enormous potential to save lives. From humble beginnings, and the vision of high-profile former Durham College president Gary Polonsky, UOIT was propelled from a pie-in-the-sky notion to a bricks-and-mortar post-sec- ondary institution. The brightest young men and women are being schooled in a variety of disciplines and the faculty continues to impress with its commit- ment, knowledge and achievement. There is some wonderful, potentially life-changing work being done at Dur- ham’s UOIT. As the school’s reputation and profile grows, it will continue to draw the best and brightest to its class- rooms, both as students and educators. A state-of-the-art university in Oshawa? What a great idea. UOIT’s reputation, achievement grows I recently had a conversation with my mom about Facebook. She doesn’t have a member profile but many of her friends, both in Canada and back in Europe, are increasingly signing up. The latter boggles my mind a bit because when we moved to Canada in 1987, people in my mom’s Romanian village didn’t even have telephones. In fact, most residents there got cell- phones before they got land lines so it’s been a quick jump from low tech to high tech. My mom, on the other hand, has long used computers at work and my parents made sure to buy us a Commodore 64 back when I was in the third grade and since then we’ve always had a computer in the house. Now in her early 50s, she’s pretty tech savvy, but has absolutely no intention of logging onto Facebook. “Everyone would know everything about me,” she explained to me recently. “That’s kind of the point,” I responded. People know when we’re sick, planning a vacation, in a spat with a spouse, frazzled from work and much, much more. We feel compelled to share. For me, Facebook has always struck me as a bit of an open conversation. Kind of like when you’re with friends at a coffee shop and someone opens a conver- sation with a non sequitur. “You won’t believe the day I had at work” or “I have no idea what to buy my mother- in-law for Christmas” and off it goes into stories and anecdotes. In our modern world, many of us work long hours with very little time for leisure. We don’t see our friends and family mem- bers sometimes even on a monthly basis and often we don’t know our neighbours. So when we need that bit of conversation and connection, it’s easy to turn to Face- book. Cooking dinner and it turns into a burnt mess? Post a photo and someone will commiserate with you. In fact, if we post things and no one responds, it kind of smarts. And thanks to the abundance of smart phones, we’re no longer stuck behind a computer if we want to post. We can do it from the grocery store and share a good sale and we can share our kid’s hockey vic- tory right from the arena. But at the at end of the day we choose what we share. So, I think my mom is slightly underesti- mating how much people knew about each other before the advent of Facebook. Visit any tight-knit small community and every- one knows everything about neighbours and likely more than casual Facebook friends know about each other. Back in my mom’s village in Romania, dusk was a hub of social activity. The older folks would sit on benches outside their homes and visit with their neighbours. These days, instead of using benches, we use Facebook. The technology may be a lot more com- plicated, but the instinct to communicate and exchange information is timeless. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. Fire prevention inspector Kevin Vaughan said smoke alarms are no substitute for fire pre- vention measures, but they provide an important early warning when fire strikes. “Ajax residents need to ensure their smoke alarms work, and that there is one on each floor and outside all sleeping areas,” he said. “They should change the batteries when they change their clocks and never use rechargeable batteries.” More tips on smoke alarms: • Install a new battery at least once a year; the Ajax fire depart- ment recommends twice a year • Smoke alarms should be cleaned every six months. Open the cover and gently vacuum the interior of the device, but don’t let the nozzle touch the unit. • Smoke alarms don’t last forever and those more than 10 years old should be replaced. • Make sure smoke alarms are never without a battery, or unplugged. Every box has an assortment of gender- neutral items including a hat, mitts, socks, book, candy, clothing, toothbrush and tooth- paste and a toy - with everything geared to a specific age range. Then the boxes are deliv- ered to depots throughout the GTA, and vol- unteers take them directly to the families. The Star pays all administrative costs - every cent collected goes into buying the gifts for children who may otherwise get nothing. Looking back, Mr. Desrocher remembers only one item from his Star box: “a nice pair of knee-high socks.” They went nicely with his short pants, he recalls with a smile. Do they get tired? “No, it’s good exercise and I like the camaraderie,” he says. “And it’s a worthwhile cause.” It’s Marie Carter’s first year for packing the boxes but she has been delivering them for about 25 years. Ms. Carter, 61, started when her son was five and in Cub Scouts. It became an annual event and now that her son is living in British Columbia “he’s tried to find something simi- lar there” in volunteering, she says, because he enjoyed delivering the Santa Claus Fund boxes so much. “There’s a lot of satisfaction in this,” says Ms. Carter, who raised her son as a single parent. “I feel lucky that I never needed a Star box. But I know many do.” -- Valerie Hauch is a reporter for the Toronto Star THE SANTA FUND Est. 1906 GOAL: $1.6 million To Donate: For secure online donations, please go to thestar.com/santaclausfund Visa, AMEX and MasterCard: Dial 416-869-4847. He experienced the symptoms as a kid, but was too ashamed to admit it. “When I was a teen, I didn’t tell anybody about it,” he said. November is Get Gutsy Month, a time to raise awareness about IBD. Nationwide, CCFC is launching a new bathroom-find- er application currently available for iPhone and Android users, called Can’t Wait. The CCFC recently found in a survey of nearly 1,400 IBD suf- ferers, most people chose to stay home during flare-ups. Seventy- two per cent of English-speaking and 82 per cent of French-speak- ing respondents restricted their travel for fear of not being able to use a bathroom and 44 per cent of English and 39 per cent of French respondents have had an accident in public due to bath- room inaccessibility. The Canada-wide Can’t Wait application works in two ways. It uses GPS to track the user’s location and point to the clos- est bathroom, and it allows users to add bathrooms to share. It’s available as a free download through iTunes, by searching for Can’t Wait. A web-based version is also available at www.cant- wait.ca. “The foundation actually fund- ed it and developed it because a lot of people, including myself, feel restricted because of bath- room access,” Mr. Marche said. So far, CCFC volunteers have added more than 600 bathrooms in several major Canadian cities, but now users are asked to add locations they know are acces- sible to the public. Users can also list bathroom hours and any information that makes access easier, such as whether a key or a purchase is required to use them. The Town of Ajax has official- ly declared November Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Month. In Pickering, the CCFC is host- ing an education talk by pediat- ric gastroenterologist Dr. Latifa Yeung, called Youth and Inflam- matory Bowel Disease. It’s free and is open to the public and will follow with a meet and greet and question-and-answer period. It’s taking place on Monday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Pickering Public Library, One The Esplanade, in the auditorium. Mr. Marche explained it will be an opportunity to meet others with IBD. “The hardest part for me is I was isolated,” he said. Those interested in attending the event can RSVP: CALL 1-800-387-1479, ext. 235 EMAIL jlee-bearss@ccfc.ca VISIT www.ccfc.ca (to find out about other Get Gutsy events) When I was a teen, I didn’t tell anybody about it. Correction durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 5, 201023 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com durhamregion.comEntertainment PEOPLE Ajacian’s acting career has taken off Nikki Grant has the Midas touch MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Everything Nikki Grant touches seems to turn to gold for her. The 21-year-old Ajax dancer and actor says she “begged” her parents as a 10 year old to let her try dancing. After just one year at her studio, she made the com- petitive dance team. Eight years later Grant auditioned to become a member of the Toronto Raptors Dance Pak and for two seasons, 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, was its youngest member. She was accepted back for a third season but turned the job down as, after less than a year of taking acting lessons and acting, she landed a major role in a feature film. Grant admits she got into act- ing to become famous. And while that may happen in the future, she’s had a change of heart. “It’s definitely for the love of the art because if you don’t have that it’s hard to succeed in this business,” she says. The aforementioned film is Beat the World, due for release in March. Grant plays Cherry, a dancer who she says doesn’t have a lot of self-esteem and uses arrogance to hide the fact. She was in Berlin this past sum- mer where some of it was shot. “It’s about three dance crews from across the world that are battling to get to Beat the World, this dance competition,” she says, noting Cherry is “basical- ly the bad girl” who has designs on one of the male dancers, who has a girlfriend. Just as she was finishing up her work on Beat the World, Grant found herself on another set, dancing in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, released in Septem- ber on the Family Channel and starring the Jonas Brothers. She followed that up with an appearance in an episode of a new TV series, Lost Girl. If all of this seems like a natural progression, it was: Grant says she got into dancing because a few friends danced. And while she was a member of the Dance Pak, she learned a lot of the other dancers acted as well and she decided to give it a shot. As you might have guessed, Grant’s extremely outgoing and loves performing in front of a crowd. So, when it came time to be in front of the camera, nerves were not an issue. “It was so exciting to me,” she says. “It is as if the camera wasn’t there and I was another person.” She likes acting because it allows her to explore different aspects of her personality. Grant says the support of her parents is what has carried her though all the rapid changes she’s had in her life in the past few years. It’s no surprise that the former Ajax High School student has her sights set on her next challenge. “My next big goal for myself is I’d like to be a series regular on a TV show,” Grant says. ART EXHIBITION Ajax artist showing in Clarington Catch Ingrid Ruthig’s show in Bowmanville BOWMANVILLE -- Ingrid Ruthig is featured at Artspace on the Mezzanine in Bowmanville. The Ajax poet and visual artist’s Slipstream exhibition runs to Nov. 15. “Slipstream began as rough notes for a much larger narrative document- ing the passage of 18 hours during a single day in 2007 -- a series of moments and the view from a window overlooking Lake Ontario, captured each hour on the hour,” she states in a press release. “Eventually I distilled that journey into a poem sequence by imposing the structure and temporal nature of traditional Japanese haiku poetic form. It evolved word by word, image by image, into a contemplation of time, memory, change, separation, absence and acceptance.” Artspace on the Mezzanine is in the Bowmanville Branch of the Clar- ington Public Library, 163 Church St. Submissions from artists to exhib- it at Artspace are always welcome. Contact Jean-Michel Komarnicki at jmkimage@ican.net or by phone at 905-623-9060. JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND AJAX -- Nikki Grant is an up-and-coming actor and dancer from Ajax. Watch for her in the film Beat the World, due for release in March. FILM Ajax Film Circuit screens movie Nov. 10 Young mother has her hands full in Winter’s Bone AJAX -- A grand jury prize win- ner at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival is next up for the Ajax Film Circuit. Winter’s Bone is screened on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. “Set in the Ozark Mountains, it tells the story of 17-year-old Ree Dolly (superbly acted by Jenni- fer Lawrence), an overburdened teenager struggling to care for her young siblings and track down her errant father,” states a press release. “This darkly suspenseful tale is based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell and is a thrilling tale of self empowerment, family loy- alty and the rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood.” Films are screened one Wednesday a month from Sep- tember through May at the Ajax Cineplex Odeon, 248 Kingston Rd. E. at Salem Road. Tickets are $7 in advance at the Ajax Public Library (Main and McLean Community Centre branches) or $7.50 at the theatre on film night. You don’t have to be a member to see the films. To be added to the circuit e-mail list, contact Barry Butler at barrybutler@rogers.com. AWARDS Musicians honoured in Whitby last week Durham Region Music Society hands out hardware DURHAM -- The Durham Region Music Society handed out its 2010 awards on Oct. 27. The event was held at the Whitby Courthouse Theatre. The winners are: • Vocalist of the Year -- Jerome Tucker • Best Blues Recording -- Lou De Adder • Best Rock -- One Divided • Best Country/Roots/R and B -- Leah Daniels • Friend of the Arts -- the Town of Whitby • Recording of the Year -- Jack de Keyzer • Glen Bensley Award -- Richard Henderson • Album of the Year -- Jack de Keyzer • Producer of the Year -- Richard Greenspoon Visit the group’s site at www.thed- urhamregionmusicsociety.com. MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Daniel Colby has done it again. The Uxbridge artist took the Best In Show Award in the PineRidge Arts Council’s 12th annual Juried Art Exhibition. Colby also won the award in 2005 and 2007 and he has won one of the event’s major awards every year since 2004. He won this year for his portrait, Laura, which depicts a 13-year-old Uxbridge girl. The stunning work shows half of her face bathed in warm, natural light and the other half in shadow. “That’s become an important thing to me, natural light,” he says. “I’m interested in tran- sitions, as I’ve said before, and that’s just another layer of that. Light is fleeting.” Sheila King, also of Uxbridge, won the Ontario Power Generation Award and Osha- wa’s Toni Hamel was named the Veridian Corporation Award winner. Pickering’s Robert Hinves won the Russell David Johnson Award and Hi-Sook Bark- er, from Pickering as well, took the Mayor’s Award for her Evening Glow. Barker recently also won awards from the Toronto Watercolour Society and in the Visu- al Arts Centre of Clarington’s Juried Show of Fine Arts. Evening Glow, which shows a beach scene late in the day, might seem a departure for those who are familiar with her bright floral works. But Barker says she used to do a lot of paintings of similar lighting conditions. “Because the light is low, everything is sub- dued, very bland,” she says. Jenna Van Abbema of Pickering was named the Optimist Club of Ajax Best in Youth Award winner. Her Love to Read black-and- white photograph shows an open book with a page on each side curled to create a heart in the centre. Another photo, True Summer, was taken during a bike ride in Pickering. A daisy, photographed from behind, leads the viewer into the work. Charvel Rappos of Pickering also has two works in the show, both of which received special recognition. More Men, a graphite drawing, was done after she saw a photograph in National Geo- graphic. It shows a man who made her think of “a modern-day cowboy. “I kind of liked the idea of this old man, dirty and scruffy,” she says. On the other hand, I’m Blind and I’m Happy is an abstract acrylic painting done on board, showing a constrained person confronted by conflicting viewpoints. “He’s trying to determine what to believe, what not to believe, what’s true and what isn’t,” Rappos says. “He’s trying to break free but he can’t.” Also in the Youth Category, Lindsay Sisson was named the Mayor’s Award winner, Holly Davidson received a Sponsor’s Award of Excellence, and Cheryl-Ann Aiken and Jas- mine Patterson received Honourable Men- tions. The exhibition continues to Nov. 28 at the McLean Community Centre, 95 Magill Dr. (at Westney Road), Ajax. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 5, 201024 AP Movember challenges men to grow a moustache starting November 1st for the entire month. The Pickering resi- dent is second on the team with eight goals and 15 points, while his 45 penalty minutes lead the way. OSHAWA GENERALS Andreoff key to early success Pickering forward second in points, first in penalty minutes SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Andy Andreoff has bided his time as patiently as any member of the Oshawa Generals over the last couple of years and now he’s taking full advantage of the opportunity at hand. After spending the better part of two seasons trying to find his niche with the club, Andreoff seems to have done just that this year, at least in the eyes of those who matter most. “I’ve had a strong affinity for Andy and his play because he’s such a great kid and he works hard,” general manager and coach Chris DePiero said after a recent game. “I find Andy just to be one of the most reliable play- ers we have. I can play him on the left side, at centre, right wing. He kills penalties, he’s (on the) power play. He’s just an all-around play- er and is getting rewarded offen- sively.” Indeed he is. After breaking out for what many would consider a surpris- ing 15-goal, 48-point year last season, Andreoff has put himself in a position to better those num- bers this campaign. Through 13 games, the Pickering resident and former Panther has eight goals and 15 points, good enough for second on the team in both categories, not far behind the pace set by New York Rangers prospect Christian Thomas. Andreoff’s plus-minus has also taken a dramatic turn. After fin- ishing minus-18 last year, he is a team-best plus-13 to date and also leads the team in penalty minutes with 45, many of them coming by virtue of his seven fighting majors as the physical edge to his game has really been on display. “Coach was telling me at the end of last year that I needed to be more aggressive, so it’s com- ing out more,” Andreoff said. “It’s coming about that a few more people want to fight me and it’s a part of the game. If it happens, it happens. It’s an emotional game and I’m not afraid if it works out that way.” As for the spike in offensive numbers and the impressive plus-minus? “I’ve just been battling,” he said. “Battling in the corners, driving to the net and it’s been working in my favour so far. My linemates have been helping me out, get- ting me the puck and driving to the net. It’s working out.” While Andreoff, who was orig- inally a fifth-round pick of the Generals in 2007 OHL Priority Selection, admits he didn’t know what to expect coming into the season, he seems to have a solid grasp on what will be necessary to keep his place among the Gen- erals’ group of top-six forwards. “To be relentless. Attack. Win battles in the corners and bury that biscuit,” he said simply. The Generals are up north this weekend with games tonight in Sault Ste. Marie and tomorrow at Sudbury. ONTARIO JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE Panthers make a trade with Markham PICKERING -- The Pickering Panthers have made a trade in advance of this weekend’s games with the Lindsay Muskies. The Ontario Junior Hockey League club has traded forward Brandon Porco, son of owner John, to the Markham Waxers for future considerations. This weekend, the Panthers travel to Lindsay Friday and host the Muskies Sunday at 6:30 p.m. FOOTBALL St. Mary, Pickering ready for playoffs DURHAM -- With the turn of the calendar into November, there are always a few things that come hand-in-hand with that change. One being the race to a LOSSA boys’ football championship heats up and another being the Donald A. Wilson Gators find themselves right in the thick of the race. The Gators completed another undefeated regular season earlier this week, closing out the schedule with a 25-21 win over the previous- ly perfect Holy Trinity Titans. The win left them at the top of the tier one division at 6-0. Greg Morris paced the Gators offence with a pair of touchdowns and will be counted on in the same manner in next week’s semifinal affair against the Pickering Trojans. That game will go Tuesday at noon at Wilson. In their previous meeting this sea- son, Wilson won by scores of 19-14 way back in Week 2 on the strength of two Omar Williams touchdowns and one from Morris. Any way you slice it, the fourth- place Trojans (3-3) will be in tough as they try to end Wilson’s three- year reign at the top of the LOSSA heap. The other semifinal will also be a hotly contested match with the Titans playing host to the St. Mary Monarchs. When the two clashed back in Week 3 of the season in Pickering, the Titans erased a 9-1 deficit early and posted a 22-16 victory. From there, Holy Trinity rolled seamlessly into the final week of the schedule before hitting the Wil- son speed bump. Along the way, their offence was overwhelming, averaging nearly 40 points a game. But St. Mary is no slouch either. They finished third in the division at 4-2, and have as good a chance as anyone to shut down the vaunt- ed Titans’ offence, considering they feature the stingiest defence in the league, having only allowed 48 points in six games. Their semifinal will take place Tuesday as well, at noon, in Cour- tice. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 5, 201026 AP at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Regent Theatre Concert Series durhamdurham Great music close to home! An Annandale men’s team skipped by Chris Van Huyse won the Ontario champi- onship with Tim March, Patrick Janssen and Tyler Anderson. The team now advances to the Canadian championships to be held in Prince Edward Island Nov. 23-28. A Chinguacousy Curling Club team skipped by Susan Burnside won the women’s championship. Half of the total entry fee is donated to the Canadi- an Paraplegic Association, so this year the participat- ing curlers saw over $7,000 going to the cause. An Annandale junior team, skipped by Ben Bevan with Tyler Sagan, Jake McGhee and Carter Adair, coached by Jennifer McGhee, was in the Lon- don Junior Cash Spiel last weekend. The team won its way to the final in the main A event. Earlier in the sea- son, the team won its way to participate in the Ottawa Valley Curling Association Junior Cashspiel Nov. 5-7 and will face a team from the USA in its first game. On Saturday, Nov. 6, Annandale will host the popular bantam/junior bonspiel. It includes two eight-end games, lunch, snacks and prizes for all. Sixteen teams will partici- pate in a competitive draw, and another 16 in the non- competitive draw. Team Glenn Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, with the front end of Brent Laing and Craig Savill, was in the Cactus Pheasant Classic in Brooks, Alberta Oct. 28-31. The team got through to the semifinals but was upset by the eventual winning Kevin Martin team from Alber- ta. Next on the calendar is The Grey Power World Cup of Curling in Windsor Nov. 3-7. The event is billed as an elite 18-team tourna- ment featuring the world’s top curlers. SUBMITTED PHOTO AJAX -- The Annandale rink of, from left, Chris Van Huyse, Tim March, Patrick Janssen and Tyler Anderson won the provincial championship, earning the right to compete at nationals in Prince Edward Island. It’s a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wayne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. PWHL team wins two of three on busy weekend DURHAM -- The Durham Junior Lightning had a busy three games sched- uled this Halloween week- end and the result was more treats than tricks. On Oct. 29, the Junior Lightning travelled to Brampton where the Junior Thunder defeated them 6-0. Both goalies, Jack- ie Rochefort and Chan- tal Bicket, played hard but could not turn back the tide of goals from the Thunder. On Oct. 30, the Light- ning dusted themselves off and hosted the Cam- bridge Junior Fury at the Ajax Community Centre. There, the team posted a 3-1 victory. Shannon Stew- art opened the scoring in the first, off assists from Rebecca Rutherford and Carly Marchment. Cam- bridge capitalized on the power play and evened the score before the end of the first. In the second, Dur- HOCKEY More treats than tricks for Lightning ham scored a power play goal of its own by SaraJane Pratt, assisted by Lindsey McDonald and Marissa Maugeri. Durham’s final goal came in the third with Rutherford just beating the buzzer, off an assist from Marchment. Bicket record- ed the win with 27 saves. On Halloween, the Junior Lightning played their third game of the weekend against the visiting Nepean Wildcats, winning 4-1. Maugeri opened the scor- ing with a power play goal assisted by Emily Keke- wich and Megan Simp- son. The second period was owned by the Light- ning who scored three more goals. Maugeri had her second of the night off Emily Kekewich and Victo- ria McDonald, then, Shan- non Stewart scored from Rutherford and March- ment. Sara Kaljuvee closed out Durham’s second peri- od, scoring off assists by Pratt and Marchment. In the third, Nepean scored their lone marker while on a power play, ruining goalie Bicket’s bid for a shutout. Bicket stopped 19 shots in a game that saw Durham outshoot Nepean 28-20. Saturday, the Junior Lightning will host the Mississauga Chiefs at 7:30 p.m. at the Ajax Commu- nity Centre. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 5, 201032 AP 201 BAYLY ST. W.
