PICKERING -- Garbage piled along the
streets of Port-au-Prince wasn’t uncom-
mon when Dr. Sam Martin traveled
through Haiti’s capital in the past.
But the amount of rubble from the fall-
en buildings, tent cities and the stench
of garbage as a result of the earthquake
that devastated Haiti and took more
than 200,000 lives only eight months
ago, is something words, pictures
and even videos can’t fully describe.
“It’s unbelievable. And all the rubble
is still there,” said the head pastor of the
Safe Haven Worship Centre in Pickering
and the president of the Arms of Jesus
Children’s Mission.

Oshawa
businessman
wonders if
rivals breached
BlackBerry
BY JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- The first time
it happened, Brent Fox-
MacLean figured he’d just
been too slow in respond-
ing to a client’s call.
The second and third
incidents could have been
chalked up to coincidence.
But as time went on and
Mr. Fox-MacLean repeat-
edly found pickup orders
for his scrap metal busi-
ness had been collected
before he arrived, he began
to smell a rat.
Then, last Saturday, Mr.
Fox-McLean showed up at
a house in Pickering for a
pre-arranged pick-up. The
homeowner stared blank-
ly when Mr. Fox-MacLean
said he was the collector
who’d arranged to pick up
some scrap metal.
“He’s like, ‘The guy was
already here’,” Mr. Fox-
MacLean, of Oshawa,
recalled.
“He said he was the scrap
guy and his name was
Brent.
“I’m thinking, what the
heck is going on? How is
this happening?”
Mr. Fox-MacLean began
to wonder if somehow,
someone was eavesdrop-
ping on the business calls
he took on his BlackBerry,
then beating him to pick-
ups in order to scoop up
loads of lucrative scrap
metal.
“It’s a cut-throat busi-
ness,” he said. “It just
seemed like someone was
one step ahead of me. I
would get there and the
stuff would be gone.”
Mr. Fox-MacLean talk-
ed to Durham police, who
told him it might be pos-
sible someone had tapped
into his cellphone and was
able to listen in. He did an
Internet search for cell-
phone surveillance, and
found dozens of compa-
nies advertising software
that purports to give users
the ability to monitor cell-
phone calls and text mes-
sages without being detect-
ed.
He’s since changed the
settings and cards on his
cellphone and disconnect-
ed the Blue Tooth option.
Since then, he’s not been
beaten to a pre-arranged
pickup.
Mr. Fox-MacLean admits
the notion someone was
monitoring his business
calls is far-fetched, and
that he has no proof it actu-
ally happened. But the
incidents left him shaken
and wondering about the
security of the devices he
uses each day. He listed his
cellphone number in all his
advertising so it was avail-
able to anyone, he said.
“I can’t prove anything,”
he said. “You think you’re
going crazy -- you honestly
do.”
Durham police Sergeant
Nancy van Rooy said police
are cognizant of develop-
ing software such as sur-
veillance programs being
offered for sale.
“This technology is on
the horizon and potentially
available,” she said.
Unauthorized surveil-
lance is illegal, Sgt. van
Rooy said.
“You cannot intercept
private conversations with-
out judicial authorization,”
she said. “It would be like
a phone tap without your
permission or knowledge -
- that’s illegal.” durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 9, 20102

AJAX -- As the Parkinson
SuperWalk marks its 20th
anniversary, Durham resi-
dents will add their efforts to
help people suffering from
the disease.
The Durham Region
SuperWalk will start at Ajax’s
Rotary Park, located on Lake
Driveway West, on Sept. 12
at noon with registrations.
Walkers will hit the pave-
ment at 2 p.m. Among them,
Pickering resident Rocio
Korytkowski will be walking
in memory of her mother
Bertha Guevara, who died
last November.
“My mother had the dis-
ease for 20 years, and near
the end she had deteriorat-
ed so bad I felt I had to do
something,” said Ms. Koryt-
kowski.
Parkinson’s is a progressive
neurological disease where
cells in the brain which pro-
duce the chemical dopa-
mine die. Symptoms include
tremors or shaking, slowness
in movements, muscle stiff-
ness and problems with bal-
ance. People affected by the
disease also experience dif-
ficulty with speech and writ-
ing, sleep disorders, depres-
sion and cognitive changes.
Currently there is no known
cause or cure and the Super-
Walk donations are used to
fund research and help peo-
ple living with disease.
This will be Ms. Koryt-
kowski’s third fundraiser
for Parkinson’s. She started
three years ago with shav-
ing her head for the cause.
Since then she has grown
her team to 10 people and
raised $35,000. She plans to
keep going in her mother’s
memory.
“I’m determined and peo-
ple can hear my passion and
know I believe in this and I
can make a difference,” she
said.
Ms. Korytkowski said it
was devastating to watch
her mother lose the ability to
do things she did when Ms.
Korytkowski and her sib-
lings were children, such as
cook a dinner.
“When she was diag-
nosed, my mother cried a
lot because when she went
to the clinic, she saw people
at the advanced stages,” she
said.
She says many of the peo-
ple who support her in her
fundraising or participate in
the SuperWalk have person-
al experience with the dis-
ease.
“Hopefully with a lot of
research, they’ll come up
with new medications or
they’ll come up with a cure.”
The Durham walk had 350
participants last year with
more than $75,000 raised.
The Parkinson Society of
Canada is hoping to raise $3
million this year.
