DURHAM -- Two cousins are facing a combined 408 charges after a lengthy Durham Police investigation into catalyt- ic converter thefts. Suspects were first identi- fied in surveillance foot- age from the Whitby GO station parking lot. Officers observed suspects removing the devices, taking an average of one min- ute to remove them from cars, according to Dur- ham Region Police Servic- es. Suspects were arrested at the Union- ville GO station lot and several car own- ers have been contacted. Police say there were thefts in Halton, Toronto, York and Durham. Charlie Williamson, 20, of Centre Street in Millbrook is charged with eight counts of theft under $5,000, 94 counts of mis- chief, failure to comply with proba- tion, 85 counts of theft, posses- sion of a controlled substance, break and enter and posses- sion of stolen property. Jay William- son, 24, of Elliott Avenue in Oshawa is charged with seven counts of theft under $5,000, 87 counts of theft, 93 counts of mis- chief, failure to comply with probation, possession of a controlled sub- stance and break and enter. The accused were held for bail hearings, according to police. “Catalytic converters are emission con- trol devices that reduce the amount of harmful pollution created by a vehicle. It costs upward of $1,500 to replace a catalytic converter on some vehicles,” a release from Durham Police said. “Removing them affects the perfor- mance of the vehicle and can lead to dam- age to the vehicle’s fuel line or wiring.” POLICE Cousins charged in catalytic converter thefts DURHAM -- Two cousins face a shopping list of charges after catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles at GO station parking lots across Durham. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 26, 20103 AP Durham’s Home Comfort Specialists Heating • Air Conditioning • Indoor Air Quality 1885 Clements Road, Unit 204, Pickering 905.428.8899 www.compasshomeservices.ca • 2 Ton Air Conditioning Unit Ideal for up to 2000 square feet! • From ONLY $27.00 per month O.A.C • No-Charge 10 Year Parts and Labour Warranty • Ask about Government Rebates to save even more! end of season Special!end of season Special! We Guarantee the HIGHEST Prices Paid for Gold in Canada! An Aug. 9 MTO confiden- tial report was obtained by the Metroland Durham Region Media Group. It listed the prov- ince’s rationale for ending the first phase of the Hwy. 407 exten- sion at Simcoe Street in Oshawa. One of the reasons stated was the extra $2 billion. “The government remains committed to extending the 407 East to Hwy. 35/115. Due to the global economic crisis and a $19 (bil- lion) provincial deficit resources are being managed extremely carefully,” the MTO report said. Durham Region Chairman Roger Ander- son, however, said he thinks it would cost closer to $300 million to build the Hwy. 407 to the Hwy. 115/35. “I don’t buy that figure at all. I think that $2 billion includes maintenance and oper- ations on it for the next 40/45 years,” said Mr. Anderson. “Never have I seen them do a study on the cost of maintaining a high- way for 40 years as a justification for build- ing it. All those highways west of Markham Road would never have been built.” He also found it interesting there was no revenue estimate for the toll road included in the evaluation. The report said proper- ties beyond Simcoe Street would require significant environmen- tal work before construction. East of Simcoe Street, Hwy. 407 will pass through the environ- mentally protected Greenbelt and environmentally sensitive lands, said the MTO document. According to the report, the work would delay construc- tion by two years -- from starting in 2012 and completed by the end of 2015, to beginning in 2014 and not ending until 2017. “Over 110 additional properties would be required to terminate the extension near the (East Durham link). The environmen- tal work will result in significant increase in resource requirements, cost and will require a full process to secure permission to enter and potential ministerial orders,” the report said. Mr. Anderson said the Province will need to work out the timing of bridge construc- tion to minimize the disruption to wild- life, but said the majority of environmen- tal issues were worked out in the recently approved environmental assessment. “The only issue with the Greenbelt is tim- ing and protection of fish and wildlife,” said Mr. Anderson. Durham Region and the local munici- palities are concerned that building the Hwy. 407 in stages and stopping it at Sim- coe Street and Winchester Road will dump a high volume of transport and commuter traffic onto rural north Oshawa roads. “All the traffic is going to use Taunton Road and all those concession roads to get to the 407. Those are two-lane roads,” said Mr. Anderson. The MTO report said the next step would be working with the municipalities to study the potential traffic impacts of ending the Hwy. 407 at Simcoe Street and work on mit- igation options. On Monday, Aug. 23, Delcan Corporation announced it was awarded the engineering design contract for the Hwy. 407 East exten- sion in Durham. Mr. Anderson said the Province needs to live up to an agreement signed with the federal government, to build the Hwy. 407 all the way to the Hwy. 115/35. “To stop it at Simcoe is just unfathom- able,” said Mr. Anderson. “If they want to stop it at Simcoe Street, I’ll come up with maintenance costs for the 45 years, without revenue, and tell them that’s what it’ll cost.” A spokesperson from the MTO was not available for comment by the press dead- line. DURHAM EXTENSION MTO explains rationale for halting Hwy. 407 in Oshawa NEXT STEPS IN REPORT Preliminary traffic forecasts at 407 east/Simcoe Street indicate some traffic increase is anticipated to be manageable. The minister has met with mayors for Oshawa, Clarington, and Whitby and will be visiting the region and Chair Anderson. MTO will work with local municipalities (including Durham Region, Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Ajax, Clarington, city of Kawartha Lakes and the city and county of Peterborough) to - assess any traffic impacts created by termination at Simcoe Street, as required. - develop mitigation options as required. MTO will continue involving the Region and munici- palities during the design process to ensure that the Simcoe Street termination and construction activities in the area will be safe, efficient and cost- effective with minimal impact on the surrounding road network. Letter went out Aug. 5 to invite participation on the Environmental Assessment Advisory Committee with the first meeting to be held in mid-September. Don’t nuke green energy: Greenpeace activists KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Nuclear reactors were mistakes of the past and they should stay there, said Greenpeace members and supporters in Pickering Tuesday. Around 40 cyclists bearing flags stating ‘Don’t Nuke Green Energy’ took off from the Pickering Nuclear Generating Sta- tion and made their way to the Darlington nuclear station. Greenpeace Canada organized the ride, ‘Stop Darling- ton: Ride for Renewables’, to urge Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty to go green. “We’re riding from the oldest nuclear station to the newest nuclear station,” said climate and energy campaigner Shawn Patrick Stensil when the cyclists gathered in Pickering. This ride comes on the heels of a recent report by Green- peace, the Pembina Institute and the Canadian Environ- mental Law Association, called ‘Renewable is Doable’. It indicates using a mix of green technologies and conserva- tion will be cheaper than using nuclear methods. Mr. Stensil complimented the decision to shut down the Pickering plant in 2020 due to aging infrastructure, but crit- icized plans to spend $26 billion to build new reactors at Darlington. “If you spend $26 billion on new reactors you’re certainly not putting it into green energy,” Mr. Stensil said. He added using green technology will also create more jobs. He explained Ontario has made great strides in the past five years and has made more investments in green energy than was expected. “This year they contracted more green energy than they expected to in the next 17 years,” he said. Spending money on new nuclear reactors will go against those strides, he said. Greenpeace volunteers and supporters cheered him on at a rally held at the bottom of the wind turbine in Pickering. “Do you guys want more plants to shut down?” Mr. Stensil asked the crowd in Pickering. “Yes,” they all said. “Do you guys think that Darlington should be replaced with green energy?” he asked. “Yeah,” they all shouted. The cyclists then took off toward Darlington, where they were planning a rally and to speak to the crowd in an attempt to draw attention to green energy. Stopping new reactors at Darlington is the first step, Mr. Stensil said, adding open, public dialogue on the types of green energy that should replace the Darlington reactors is also necessary. ENVIRONMENT Greenpeace goes from Pickering to Darlington RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND PICKERING -- Greenpeace volunteers, cyclists and friends of green energy cycled from the Pickering nuclear station to the Darlington nuclear station Tuesday Aug. 24 in protest of Dalton McGuinty’s proposed plans to build a new nuclear reactor when the Pickering facility shuts down in 2020. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 26, 20105 905-430-6666C&C MOTORSC&C MOTORS Highway #2 at Lakeridge, WHITBY ▲ Ratings of “Good” are the highest rating awarded for 40-mph frontal offset, 31-mph side-impact and 20-mph rear-impact crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway safety (IIHs) (www.iihs.org). AP JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND Zoo to You at Pickering library PICKERING -- Christopher Niemela reached to touch a hedgehog during a Zoo to You session on Aug. 18, part of the Reading Club program at the Pickering Public Library. DURHAM -- More than 4,000 local Veridian customers recently took the pledge to conserve electricity, the company reports. The Power Pledge Community Challenge was held on Aug. 11 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Commu- nities were challenged to sign up people for the pledge and reduce their electricity use during that period. More than 4,000 residents of Clarington, Brock, Pickering, Ajax, Port Hope and Bel- leville took the pledge, joining 125,000 people across Ontario. Veridian reports that if everyone who signed up lives up to their pledge to reduce consumption it will mean a reduction of 281,000 kWh reduction of electricity in Ontario, or 2,200 kWh per pledge. This translates into a savings of $232 per average pledge household on their electricity bill for the year. The greenhouse gas reduction would be the equivalent of taking 10,000 cars off the road. Although the one-day challenge is over, people can still learn about energy conservation and take the pledge at power- pledge.ca. Michelle Rauer Ajax WASTE Regional responsibilities not well managed To the editor: Re: ‘Bring back weekly garbage collection and Ajax problem disappears’, letter to the editor, Aug. 19, 2010. While Steve Smith’s suggestion to address the Ajax waste removal issue might have some limited short-term ben- efits, it would probably be no more effec- tive than widening Hwy. 401 to reduce daily traffic congestion. The root cause still remains, and the problem could happen anywhere. Increased public education and enforce- ment have not proved to be effective deterrents. Ajax should actually be looking to Dur- ham Region for a solution. It was the Region that assumed responsibility for the Ajax pickup scheduling (and at a substan- tially increased cost to taxpayers). As with other public services where the Region has become involved -- such as transit -- they are never as cost-effective or satisfac- tory as when Ajax administered them. Anyone who is a candidate in the upcoming election that would advocate extracting Ajax from Regional government would definitely get my vote. It would be interesting to hear what Whitby (where Mr. Smith lives) does to combat this ille- gal trash dumping problem, as it has the same basic garbage pickup schedule as Ajax. Kim Sadler Ajax FEEDBACK New Orleans flooding caused by levee failure, not Hurricane Katrina To the editor: Re: ‘Fats Domino rediscovered during Hurricane Katrina’, newsdurhamregion. com. It’s a great article, but I just want to point out the fact that it was not Hurri- cane Katrina that devastated New Orleans, it was an engineered levee failure caused by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who also were found responsible for the New Orleans flooding by a federal judge in Jan- uary, 2008. The flooding actually took place the day after the storm. That the levees weren’t adequately built was a known fact to the corps who built them and who chose to take no action. It’s a known fact that the flooding was caused by the levee failure and not Katrina and it’s very important that these facts are correct because history has a way of repeat- ing itself. As for the recovery and rebuilding of the city I’m positive it will definitely fully recover. But for the full recovery to take place it’s essential that the truth about the flooding is known, not only to people in New Orleans but to the whole world. A confidential Ministry of Transportation report refers to $2 billion in additional costs for building out to Hwy. 115/35 as the pri- mary barrier to honouring its agreement. But language in the document that arrives at the $2 billion figure says it reflects “the total life cycle costs of the section.” In Durham Chairman Roger Anderson’s mind, a formula that includes all-in costs over 40 or more years -- “the total life cycle costs of the section” -- raises serious ques- tions and is simply not the method in which such costs are generally calculated. Let’s not forget, however, that this is a gov- ernment that has been caught as recently as June as not being entirely candid with the public over police powers during the G20 Summit. This is a government that broke a key election promise shortly after winning its first majority and introduced a controversial health tax. This is a govern- ment that was entirely absent in explaining the introduction of recent “eco fees” that Ontarians forced the government to sus- pend. Thus, it is hard for Durham Region resi- dents and political leaders to take the gov- ernment at its word that it simply cannot afford to live up to its agreement on Hwy. 407 construction. Lurking, too, is the fact that the deal signed with the federal gov- ernment to provide its portion of the fund- ing is based on a Hwy. 407 that’s built out to Hwy. 115/35. Here at home, taxpayers in Durham risk being left behind by a provincial govern- ment that is willing to renege on a project vital to their long-term economic prosper- ity. They risk higher tax rates to fund local infrastructure required to meet unexpect- ed traffic demands. They risk a piecemeal, patchwork approach to a transportation link that is needed now in Durham. The Province and Durham Region, along with their federal partners, must revisit the project with a view to compromise and conclusion. They must work the numbers together -- not separately and confiden- tially -- to arrive at common sums. They must explore other options to secure the necessary funding. The bottom line is that Durham Region residents have patiently and quietly await- ed their turn to be linked to the Hwy. 407. Keep the pressure on your provincial poli- ticians. Remind them of their obligation. Explain to them that a deal is a deal. Insist that they live up to their agreement. If they don’t, it will be just another bro- ken promise from the McGuinty govern- ment. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 26, 20107 P The panel of judges rated the videos on the over- all message, creativity, originality, degree of stu- dent participation and likelihood to raise aware- ness. Mr. Chomiszak and his friend Dustin Peth- erick, recent graduates from Durham College’s primary care paramedic program, created the video without knowing about the competition. They had originally planned to make a five- to six-song rap CD on protocols to help study for final exams, but due to time constraints, they created 911 Emergency ROCKsponse instead, also as a study tool. The video, with a catchy tune, (the rap was set to Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics) puts a comedic spin on how to respond to a cardiac arrest. “We used comedy to engage the viewers’ interest, but we take sudden cardiac arrest very seriously,” he said on the SCAF website. “While the medics in our video certainly aren’t dem- onstrating proper technique, the steps they sing about are grounded in SCA protocol.” Mr. Chomiszak, known as DCMedicRyan on YouTube, is the former lead singer and guitar- ist of local band Ever Since Eve. He showed the video at the annual paramedic banquet and got an overwhelming response from fellow students and teachers. “I’ve never actually seen people falling out of their chairs laughing before, but I saw it then,” he said in an interview. The video quickly became a hit and has already received more than 65,000 views on YouTube. “I get e-mails from people all over the world,” he said. Mr. Chomiszak submitted the video in the con- test just for fun, and wasn’t even sure if Canadi- ans were eligible. “I just wanted to get it out there,” he said. “I fig- ured ‘I’ve got nothing to lose.’” But to his surprise, he got a phone call from SCAF, saying 911 Emergency ROCKsponse was a hit. The prize was a new AED, three CPR Any- time kits and a Nintendo Wii gaming system. He plans to donate the AED and CPR kits to Dur- ham College’s new student centre. Mary Newman, president of SCAF, applauded the video’s use of humour to generate interest in emergency response to a condition that can strike anyone at any time. “This kind of positive energy is helping to foster a new generation of people who are ready, willing and able to help,” she said on the SCAF website. “Ultimately, this generation has the power to increase survival from the nation’s leading cause of death.” Mr. Chomiszak said whether he does another paramedic video is up in the air. Jack Ottereyes, deputy youth chief of Was- wanipi Cree First Nations in Quebec, recently met with the Durham Culinary Association, a Pickering-based group that promotes the importance of locally grown food, to promote the social and physical well-being of the citi- zens in both communities. Mr. Ottereyes and DAC representatives signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the protection and promotion of traditional knowledge, lands and environ- ment that are related and directly connected to traditional foods and food production in the two communities. “The purpose of this agreement is to active- ly promote the youth in both communities to start taking an active role in the civil and municipal governance of their communities,” said Dunbarton High School teacher James Blair. Mr. Blair, also a municipal election can- didate and co-founder of DAC, organized an exchange for his students with the youth in Waswanipi in the spring. The exchange pro- gram through the YMCA enabled students to see how each community worked, and Mr. Blair and Mr. Ottereyes noted the youth real- ized although their environments are differ- ent, many of the social issues they face are the same. “It’s nice for our youth to see that others are having similar problems with the destruction of their natural environment,” Mr. Ottereyes said in a statement. He said the problems in Waswanipi include the loss of trees, forcing the residents to travel further to hunt, the contamination of waters, and youth losing the community’s traditional methods and local knowledge. In Pickering, he noted the loss of farming lands and agri- cultural knowledge. One final honour came her way recently as the Ajax resident was named the 2010 recipient of the Doris and Gordon Willey Founder’s Cup for Excellence. It is an award given annually to the student who best demonstrates scho- lastic achievements, leadership, integ- rity and involvement in college affairs. “Mandi embodies all the qualities and attributes it takes to be a success- ful student-athlete,” said Durham Col- lege athletic director Ken Babcock. “Her accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom are extraordinary. I am excited to see Mandi apply her com- mitment to success in her professional career.” Doris, who took home many ath- letic awards during her time at Durham with the women’s volleyball program, was just as thrilled to receive this one. “When I received the Doris and Gordon Willey Founder’s Cup of Excel- lence, I was very honoured,” she said in a press release. “I worked really hard on the application process and, of course, all year with my academics and extra- curricular activities. All of my volunteer- ing for fundraisers, volleyball outings in the community, events at the college and my time dedicated to my school work all paid off. I was surprised when I received the phone call letting me know that I was the recipient. It was a thrill going up on stage to be recognized as the 2010 award recipient.” Her on-court accomplishments are aplenty, and include her being the OCAA all-time record holder for most career blocks (217), while also holding the provincial record for most blocks in one season (80). Doris is also the school’s record holder for the most career points (771), blocks (217), kills (484) and matches played (81). “Mandi has been a pleasure to coach and watch for the time I have known her,” said women’s volleyball coach Shane Christopher. “Watching her accomplish so much is inspiring and I know she will continue to strive for and reach her goals in the future. I wish her nothing but the best.” Doris graduated earlier this year with a diploma in advanced account- ing (business administration) and office administration executive, which ultimate- ly led her to begin building her career working at the Ministry of Finance. Doris isn’t done with her involve- ment at Durham, however, as she will join Christopher’s coaching staff this season. BASEBALL Foster’s stock is rising Pickering resident selected for junior national baseball team BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Michael Foster proved that he belonged. The baseball player from Pickering has had an ambition for the past couple of years to be included among the best young base- ball players in the country as a member of the Junior National team. He took a giant step toward that goal at the conclusion of the Canada Cup baseball tournament in Sasketchewan. With all of the players from each of the pro- vincial teams gathered on the diamond for closing ceremonies, Greg Hamilton, man- ager of the national junior program, read out the names of 25 prospects for Canada’s team. Foster was among them. “It’s a weird process because everyone is standing there watching you,” says the 16 year old of the feeling of anticipation. “It’s a little nerve-wracking. I was ecstatic. I’ve been trying to prove I can be on this team for awhile so to hear my name called was an accomplishment.” A total of 40 players from across the coun- try will attend a camp from Oct. 14-24 in Orlando, Florida. At any time, players can be moved on and off the roster, so Foster realiz- es that the work isn’t over just yet. Each time out, he will have to prove himself. That hasn’t been a problem this summer, having advanced through a tryout process of 300 players to play for Team Ontario at the Canada Cup for the second straight year. Last year, though, his role was a much small- er one. “To be selected again and have even a big- ger role; I was really happy to contribute more this year,” he said. Ontario went 5-1 in preliminary play, beat Alberta 3-2 in the semifinals, but came up short in the gold medal game, blanked by British Columbia 4-0. Foster pitched 10 innings in two starts, and also went to the plate 12 times, collecting two hits and three runs batted in. Having played much of his minor baseball in Pickering and North York, his club team this season, the Toronto Mets, advanced to the provincial championship game, only to lose to Tecumseh, who earned the right to represent Ontario at the U18 Nationals in London. Tecumseh was able to pick up a couple of affiliated players for the nationals tournament, with Foster fortunate enough to be one of them. Tecumseh won the title, with Foster pitch- ing the semifinal and striking out 10 in a 3- 0 blanking of London. In the championship game he hit a bases-loaded triple to break open a scoreless game at the time, pushing Tecumseh to a 6-2 victory. If baseball doesn’t work out, the Grade 12 student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School has swimming to fall back on, hav- ing been a member of both the Pickering and Ajax clubs. A couple of years ago he was among the top five in the country in his age category in the 100m freestyle. Earlier this year he was back in the pool, ripping it up in the 50m free. But for now, swimming is going to take a back seat to baseball, with intentions of get- ting to the pro level the ultimate goal. “My plan is to play pro baseball in the future so I am going to do what I need to to get there,” he says, whether that means going in the major league draft or seeking a scholarship. “Whatever the best option is the one I’m going to take, whether it’s university and getting stronger for a couple years. Maybe I get drafted in the right spot and it just feels right and I go into pro baseball. Hopefully something works out.” SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND PICKERING -- Michael Foster represented Ontario at the Canada Cup Baseball Championships and has been invited to tryout for the Junior National team. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 26, 201014 AP AUGUST 27Downtown OshawaDowntown Oshawa Accompanied Children under 12 FREEAccompanied Children under 12 FREE Your carrier will be visiting during the period shown to collect.
