Setting out on a bright sunny day, just past the Frenchman’s Bay shoreline in Pickering, the fog seemed to come out of nowhere as the Pickering Auxiliary Rescue Association (PARA) took members of the media and the Pickering nuclear plant’s community advisory council out on the water. The trip was arranged by Ontario Power Generation in the wake of a $1,600 donation to PARA for new radar. The radar was put to good use as visibility was reduced to a few hundred metres. PARA Commodore Rob Anderson looked to the radar screen to identify boats, buoys and the approaching shoreline as vice-commodore Michael Leahy steered. “We’re fortunate having this radar unit, the GPS and the chart plotter ... we can move through the water with confidence regardless of the conditions,” said Mr. Anderson. The Province is expanding its Pay for Results program and providing more than $3 million in funding to health-care providers in the Durham cluster of the Central East Local Health Integration Network. “One of the problems that we have in the hospital system is not being able to move patients who are in beds that require long- term care out of the hospital, so what hap- pens is you get backlogged in your emergen- cy department,” said Lisa Shiozaki, vice presi- dent of patient services for Lakeridge Health, which has facilities in Oshawa, Bowmanville and Port Perry. “We’re doing an awful lot of work with our LHIN, our other hospital partners and the community care access centre to develop strategies to get faster access for patients.” Pay for Results is a program that assists hos- pitals and health-care partners to implement initiatives for meeting emergency room wait time reduction targets. Seventy-one Ontar- io hospitals will receive funding through the program with a goal to improve overall per- formance by 15 per cent by year’s end. “We are continuing to work with our hospi- tals and other health-care service providers to reduce the time people spend in ERs and to make sure patients are getting the very best emergency care,” said Deborah Hammons, CEO of the Central East LHIN. “This is aligned with our strategic aim of saving one million hours of time that patients spend in our emergency departments.” The government will provide up to $100 million to the 14 LHINs across the province. There are 163 emergency rooms with 2.8 mil- lion people making 5.25 million visits each year. The program has helped hospitals cut the overall amount of time Ontarians spend in the province’s emergency rooms by 21 per cent within the last two years. A total of $3,056,100 will be allocated to Durham with Lakeridge Health receiving $1,097,100 for its Oshawa site and $841,200 for its Bowmanville location. Rouge Val- ley Health System in Ajax is benefitting with $547,800 and Durham Mental Health Servic- es will see $570,000. As part of Lakeridge Health’s plans for the funding, department staffing levels will be enhanced and a nurse navigator role created to help improve patient flow, said Ms. Shioza- ki. “That tends to act like an air traffic control- ler for the department so they’re ensuring patients are moving from one point to anoth- er in the least amount of time possible and getting access to diagnostics, the physicians and the nurses,” she said. This will help determine whether an air- port is needed in Pickering. “There’s been a growing frustration in the community to get an answer,” said Ajax- Pickering MP Mark Holland. Mr. Holland, Pickering-Scarborough East MP Dan McTeague and Liberal lead- er Michael Ignatief have signed a letter demanding the government release the study. Mr. Ignatief spoke at a July Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade event and assured club presi- dent Jason Cameron that the Liberal Party would press the government to release the study. “I think it says a huge amount that Michael signed the letter personally,” Mr. Holland said. The land in north Pickering was expropri- ated by the federal government, the Liberal government of the day, in the early 1970s, but no final decision has been made on whether an airport will go ahead. The needs assessment study was con- ducted in 2007 by the developer, the Great- er Toronto Airports Authority, and the letter claims the government has kept the com- munity “in the dark”. “I think the reason they’re not releasing the business case is because there isn’t one,” Mr. Holland said. Transport Canada spokesman Jeremy Link said in an e-mail the study is now with Trans- port Canada, which is currently reviewing the results as part of its due diligence pro- cess, “in order to make an informed rec- ommendation regarding the future aviation needs in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, including the need for a potential Pickering airport. “It would be inappropriate to release the study prior to completing the comprehen- sive due diligence review,” he said. Mr. Holland said whether they support or oppose an airport, residents, businesses and environmental groups have the right to know if one will be coming to the communi- ty. “The community deserves to be allowed to move forward.” Since he suspects there is no need for one, he said the community must be consulted regarding the future of the lands. “There’s a huge resource right there and right now it’s been hanging in limbo and has been for past 40 years,” the MP said. Marilyn Doweck has lived in the Rosebank neighbourhood for 17 years and always knew more development loomed. But she was sur- prised to learn all the trees in a large nearby woodlot could come down to make way for a subdivision that may receive approval at the Ontario Municipal Board Aug. 16. “We just assumed that some of those trees would be kept,” she said during an interview in front of the woodlot at the end of Cowan Circle. She added she isn’t opposed to the develop- ment, but hopes the need for trees and oxy- gen is considered. The developer is planning a 34-home sub- division with 11-metre minimum lot frontag- es, which is smaller than the norm. Her concerns include increased traffic and noise, but Ms. Doweck’s biggest beef is the lack of concern for the natural features. “I think there should be more awareness of the environment in our established neigh- bourhoods,” she said. The plans have been discussed at length at public and private meetings and the Rose- bank Road Working Group has been meeting to find solutions. “It feels like we’ve been hitting nothing but brick walls,” Ms. Doweck said. But council never voted on the item at the meeting when it came up in March. The developer then decided to take the City to the Ontario Municipal Board. Neil Carroll, Pickering planning and devel- opment director, said while the City is inter- ested in tree preservation when appropriate, it’s unrealistic to expect most of the trees will remain if the OMB approves the plans. “We will try our best but you can’t expect anything significant,” he said. “It’s very dif- ficult to preserve trees in a subdivision like this.” He added what is preserved will depend on grading levels and even the health of the trees. The official plan does not protect this spe- cific woodlot from development, and Mr. Car- roll said the City has always planned to make more road connections in the neighbour- hood, which is slated for development. While Durham Region identified the land in question as a key natural heritage feature, an environmental impact study by Beacon Envi- ronmental found the area was of poor quality and had low ecological function. Ms. Doweck goes into the woodlot on a regular basis and often sees wildlife, such as deer and coyotes. “I guess they’ll have to find another spot,” she said. Mr. Carroll said the developer agreed to an off-site compensation plan and enhance- ments at nearby parks. Planning staff placed a number of conditions on the plans. For instance, the developer must submit a tree planting plan to the City’s satisfaction, and a plan to protect trees where appropriate before it gets subdivision approval. “He can’t get any building permits until the subdivision approval,” Mr. Carroll said. The developer’s lawyer did not return calls by press time. All content copyright Hospital emergency room staff mem- bers across Durham Region have been working feverishly in recent years to con- front the growing problem of extended waiting periods for patients. Residents faced with a minor emergency -- a bro- ken bone or a nasty laceration -- would routinely spend several hours in hospital from arrival to discharge. Patient frustra- tion combined with administrative inef- ficiencies tended to create adversarial outcomes, with patients focusing their anger on overworked hospital staff. To its credit, the Ontario government has moved expeditiously in the last sev- eral months to both provide hospitals with necessary funding to address the issue of ER wait times and provide incen- tives for those who show results through its Pay for Results program. Under P4R, Ontario hospitals are being provided up to $100 million, of which slightly more than $3 million is earmarked for Lak- eridge Health hospitals in Oshawa and Bowmanville, with another $547,000 being made available for the Rouge Val- ley Health System hospitals in Ajax and Scarborough. Unfortunately, the ER wait times issue had been left to percolate for sev- eral years without much progress from successive provincial governments, although hospitals here at home are now starting to see results. Funding being provided for local hospitals fur- ther reinforces the effort to allow local health-care officials to continue work- ing towards maximizing patient flow, reducing arrival-to-discharge times and improving administrative efficiency. For residents in Durham Region now and in the future who may eventually require emergency medical services at their local hospital, improved wait times and more responsive service are vitally important. Moving patients in and out of the hospital efficiently will allow front- line health-care workers to provide a greater level of service to more people. It should also provide better outcomes for patients treated quickly, efficiently and expertly. Health-care workers, hospital admin- istrators and Durham residents all share a responsibility in ensuring the best pos- sible medical care. The P4R program, a concerted and focused effort to further identify inefficiencies and support in the community to raise awareness and pro- mote better outcomes will serve every- one well over the long term. Emergency room wait times have long been a sore point with patients and a flash point for health-care workers. Make sure you pass it on to all your friends and family members. Don’t believe me? I wouldn’t either. But thousands of us go for just this type of request on Facebook every day, asking our friends to follow groups or individuals for a good cause. And we do; it’s easy to click and it requires no real cost or effort from us. It’s not always a scam. Legitimate busi- nesses use this technique to both give to charity and to add followers to their Face- book accounts. In other cases, it’s simply a ploy for attention on Facebook. At worst there’s the case of Ashley Kirilow, the Burlington woman accused of fak- ing cancer and bilking thousands of dol- lars from people eager to support her. Ms. Kirilow is accused of posting pictures of herself bald and with plucked eyebrows and eyelashes on her Facebook group for a bogus charity called “Change” for a Cure. Reading about the allegations against Ms. Kirilow is disheartening and inevitably leaves people feeling jaded about charitable organizing via social media. And that’s too bad because Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and blogs are an excellent way of connect- ing with people in support of a good cause. Check out some organizations that are making a difference. There’s The 5 Day Build where Halminen Homes is building a house in Courtice this week which will be auctioned off to benefit the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital. The organization has embraced social media with a Twitter account (@5daybuild) and a Facebook group tracking the project. Photos show the incredibly fast progress on the home and many of them were sub- mitted by the folks donating their time to work on the project. Larger organizations such as World Vision Canada also make excellent use of social media. The group’s page is full of photos and vid- eos of the work they do as well as people contributing stories about their own expe- riences and correspondence with the chil- dren they sponsor. Various international branches of the Red Cross and Red Crescent are also online, including the Canadian Red Cross (@red- crosscanada) currently tweeting about the need for aid for flood victims in Pakistan. In fact, the organization used Twitter to promote a live chat this week on its web- site where the public could jump in and ask questions such as how the funds for Pak- istan’s flood victims would be spent and what the Red Cross’s role was in working with the United Nations. When charities go online, they go beyond simply asking people to give, they make people feel like they’re part of the solution and they invite donors into the conversa- tion about important global issues. And though sadly there will always be those who seek to bilk the public in the name of charity, the Internet makes it easier than ever to catch them. Calls can range from a man- overboard to a mechanical failure and request for a tow. On average, they have 15 to 20 missions per year. PARA’s 35-foot boat, called the PARU, generally serves an area of Lake Ontario from the Rouge River in the west to the Whitby harbour in the east. The 50 members who work on the 35- foot boat are all trained volunteers. Both PARA and Comra Marine Rescue oper- ating in the Oshawa area receive fund- ing from Durham Region, to the tune of $35,000 each. Mr. Anderson said that’s almost enough to keep the boat running. “We are actually a registered chari- ty,” he said, adding that donations from organizations such as OPG are welcome. Though the boat isn’t always on the water, PARA members are on call and can rush to the PARU’s berth at the French- man’s Bay Yacht Club at all hours. As a coast guard auxiliary member, the PARU is sometimes called farther afield. For example, in May, when Ajax coun- cillor Shaun Collier’s boat starting taking on water off the coast of Port Hope, the PARA boat, which was near the Whitby harbour at the time, was one of the boats to answer the call. Mr. Anderson said any time they hear a distress call PARA would answer. In the case of Coun. Collier’s boat, they were on the way when the Joint Rescue Coordina- tion Centre (JRCC) in Trenton told them to proceed towards the emergency. Mr. Anderson explained that even if another boat is closer to the location, the JRCC will still ask more than one boat to respond because a closer boat could have a mechanical failure. The PARU was called off once the closest boat reached its destination. “We could potentially be sent outside of our area to render assistance,” said Mr. Anderson. In such cases, the JRCC picks up the cost of running the boat. PARA also helped with ferrying people and sup- plies to law enforcement boats stationed in the Toronto harbour during the G20 summit. One incident that sticks out in Mr. Anderson’s mind is a rescue in late Sep- tember 2003 when three fishermen cap- sized in a boat just off the Pickering nuclear plant’s shoreline. One man swam to shore and made the distress call. The PARU was by far the closest boat, but rough weather caused it to bottom out as it was navigating through the channel from Frenchman’s Bay. They lost one of the two motors, but were still able to continue on to res- cue one of the two fisherman still in the water. “He was hypothermic, he was cold, so if we hadn’t got him, I don’t think he could have made it,” Mr. Anderson said. A third fisherman died. As to why Mr. Anderson and Mr. Leahy donate their time to PARA, it’s because of a commitment to boating safety. “Anyone who’s on this vessel is really keen to help out and volunteer,” said Mr. Anderson. One year after graduating from Sheri- dan College’s theatre arts program, he snagged a small role in last year’s stage musical The Boys in the Photograph. When that show ended its run, Lancast- er won a major role in David Mirvish’s production of the new hit musical Rock of Ages. He plays prissy Franz, the son of the mean developer who wants to tear down the Bourbon Room on L.A.’s Sun- set Strip to build a modern eyesore. His big solo in the second act regularly stops the show and gets the audience pumped up. In addition, he understudies the role of Drew, the romantic lead played by Ivan Pedneault. Rock of Ages is a hit with regular the- atre-goers and fans of 1980s rock music who may never have seen a live musical before. The style of the show is loud, broad and upbeat. Toronto’s august Royal Alexandra Theatre has been turned into the “Bourbon Room,” and scantily clad “Rock Servers” walk the theatre aisles with trays of wine, beer, liquor and pop- corn for sale. The atmosphere is fun and casual. The character Franz is a flamboyant but suppressed son of a domineering man, but he eventually learns to stand up for himself and to choose his own destiny, Lancaster says. “We’re similar in that we’re both very high-energy, happy people. But I always stand up for myself. I feel there’s no place in life to do something you don’t want to do.” A typical day for Lancaster includes a late-morning breakfast, daily errands, then going to the theatre one and a half hours before show time to do his make- up and hair, which was dyed blond for the show to make him look more Nor- dic. Then, he performs dance warm-ups and lift warm-ups to get ready for the show. Once the performance is over, it’s home to bed and sleep until the next day. When Lancaster has time off, he keeps his plans simple. “I’m not a partier,” he confides. “I love to go to the Toronto Islands, or home to Pickering to visit my family. I love to go to the chip truck down at Frenchman’s Bay. Other than that, I’m a homebody.” What would surprise people most about Lancaster? “That I’m a rock singer. My character doesn’t sing any big rock songs (except for Hit Me With Your Best Shot). But I’m a rock star at heart. And I’m not shy in real life, unlike most actors.” Lancaster credits his parents with being the biggest influences in his life. “Both of them raised me in a fantas- tic way,” he says. “I always looked up to them.” He says his guiding belief is that “You get back what you put out there. If you put positive energy towards your craft and yourself, the universe will give it back to you.” This belief shapes his actions, he explains. “I go into every audition saying, ‘You’re going to get this part.’ If I don’t, I say there’s a reason why I didn’t get it. I don’t allow there to be any room for doubt.” Lancaster has also learned to roll with the punches. “Don’t let anything get you down or discourage you,” is his advice. “Don’t let a ‘No’ be the end of your career. For every audition, you get a gold star. For every gold star, you get a job.” The young performer admits his big- gest fear is forgetting his dance moves. “We had a week off when the theatre was shut down for the G20 conference in Toronto,” he recalls. “I had to relearn all my dances.” That’s why, when asked what he would have done differently in his life, he says he would have studied dance when he was younger, “just to give myself one more thing I wouldn’t have to worry about as a performer.” Another lesson Lan- caster has learned is that show business is not all glitz and glamour. “ T h e r e ’ s a big, big business behind it,” he says. “I have to be a businessman as well as a performer. I’m a business and I’m a CEO. It’s my job to look after the money, to find new work and to not rely on the current job I’m in.” When asked what other job he would want if he couldn’t be a performer, Lan- caster pauses for a moment. “I don’t think there’s anything else I’d do. I love to cook, but there no way I’d enjoy it as much as this.” Lancaster advises young performers just starting out, “If you really want this, don’t give up. Go to school, train and learn as much as you can about the busi- ness. And don’t take no for an answer.” His biographical notes in the program reinforce this idea with his quote from one of the show’s anthem songs. Local art- ist Russ Gordon designed the animal-themed maze, which was mown into the cornfield when the young stalks were just knee-high. Cooper’s CSA Farm boasts Durham’s largest corn maze, sprawling over 10 acres. Although the maze doesn’t open to the public until Sep- tember, you can get a free tour through the maze starting in mid-August by taking out a share in Cooper’s community- supported agriculture program. For a set fee, you get a week- ly box filled with assorted veg- gies and fruits that may include corn, melons, zucchini, toma- toes, carrots, herbs, cauliflower, beans, Swiss chard and straw- berries at this time of year. John Goodwin has been anoint- ed the man to lead the Ontario Junior Hockey League team out of the doldrums, hired this week to replace former head coach Bill Brady. Goodwin won’t have much in the way of preparation time, with the Panthers opening training camp on Monday, Aug. 23. “John brings a lot of hockey knowledge and we are looking for a winning attitude,” says GM Rob Toffoli of the hiring. “He’s very dis- ciplined. He has a lot of hockey knowledge coming from the OHL. “I think he will develop the kids for the next level, whether that’s going to be school, OHL or what- ever they want to do.” Goodwin spent three seasons as head coach of the Oshawa Gen- erals from 1997 to 2000. Over the past decade he has stayed involved in the game coaching his kids in Whitby minor hockey and over- seeing summer skating programs for junior aged players and those moving into the pro ranks. He was also a consultant to the Panthers a couple of seasons ago, helping out on the ice at practice and behind the bench during games as need- ed. The coaching bug never left, and when he expressed an interest to the club, things moved in a hurry. “I told them I would be interest- ed and it took off from there,” he says. The fact he has less than two weeks to prepare for the start of training camp doesn’t faze the vet- eran coach. “I don’t know if it will be smooth or not, but a lot of the kids are familiar with me. A lot of the kids coming back are, some aren’t, so it’s definitely going to be an eye opener for them.” The Whitby resident likes the depth the Panthers have after merging with the Ajax Attack back in the spring. He feels he has some skilled forwards returning, a cou- ple of veterans on defence but overall a little inexperienced on the blue line, and a goaltender who has played two years in the league. While on paper he can evaluate the roster, the real test won’t come until he gets to see the players in some exhibition games. “You really don’t know what you have until you start playing the other teams,” he says. “We will be a hard-working team. My style never changed from when I was with the Generals. It was always get to the rink and take care of business and try to do it in a professional man- ner.” He envisions the Panthers being a hard team to play against, while holding the players accountable for their efforts and putting them in a position to succeed. “Demand effort and the results will take care of themselves,” he says. The Panthers have finished last in the standings the past three sea- sons, posting winning percentages of .214 (2007-08), .357 (2008-09) and .340 (2009-10). That has to change, says Toffoli, who was the general manager with the Ajax Attack last season, and replaces Keith Pandovski with the Panthers. “I’m hoping to ice a winning team,” says the GM. “We want to bring a winning team to the com- munity. We want the fans to come out to watch it, have a good time and see us win games. That’s what we’re about.” The Panthers will be on the ice for 10 straight days beginning Aug. 23. The team has four exhibition dates, including two away against Upper Canada College (Thursday, Aug. 26) and the Junior Canadiens (Friday, Aug. 27), and home to St. Michael’s (Saturday, Aug. 28) and the Junior Canadiens (Sunday, Aug. 29). Both home games will be played at the Ajax Communi- ty Centre, with the Aug. 28 game at 7 p.m. and the Aug. 29 game at noon. Ajax Wanderers duo playing with U16 Ontario team BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- A couple of local rugby players have added a trip to Calgary to their summer itiner- ary. Matthew Sayer of Ajax and Sean Smith of Pickering, both mem- bers of the Ajax Wanderers club program, boarded a plan bound for Alberta on Wednesday where they will represent Team Ontario at the U16 National Rugby Cham- pionships. In addition to the U16 division, the championships will also host the U18 men’s and U19 women’s nationals. Sayer, who enters Grade 11 at Pickering High School next month, has wanted to play for the provincial squad the past couple of years, but his commit- ment to AAA hockey with the Ajax-Pickering Raiders consumed much of his time. “Last year I really wanted to try out for Team Ontario but I didn’t get the chance to because I was playing so much hockey,” he said. “It was always something I really wanted to do.” Sayer picked up the sport when he entered high school, and is hoping to have a strong showing this weekend, resulting in an invi- tation to the U17 Canadian team tryouts that will be held in the fall. Aside from his personal goal, the objective team-wise is to return home with the gold medal. “That’s what we are going out there to do and I think we all know we are capable of it.” Smith is excited about the opportunity playing at the nation- als presents. “I was excited,” he said upon learning he had made the provin- cial squad. “I’m proud to be play- ing for my province at nationals.” The Pickering resident is enrolled in Grade 11 at Pine Ridge Secondary School this fall, but next fall, when he enters Grade 12, he may be taking a little longer trip than normal to the classroom. Smith has applied to an exchange program to spend a semester at a private school in England, where he would play rugby and be inte- grated into the school system. Originally he was hoping to make the trip in his Grade 11 year, but a little more seasoning and another year of growth were deemed best. “I was supposed to go, but my mom talked to a coach of mine and he said it would be better to go in Grade 12 because I would be more independent,” he said. Smith played for the provincial U15 team last year, appearing in games against England and Wales. He was also part of another group that travelled to Newfoundland and Labrador for a six-day tour. Ontario opens nationals on Friday against Alberta. Prelimi- nary and playoff games continue throughout the weekend, with finals on Tuesday. Pickering finished first in its division after round robin play and in the semi- final, Scott Anderson pitched five strong innings, allowing only three runs en route to a 14-3 Pickering win over the Brampton Red Sox. In the championship game, Pickering battled with the Bloordale A’s in an excit- ing seven-inning affair, coming out on top with an 11-10 win. Mark Waldon led the team with his second solid pitching performance of the tournament. Coach Enzo Spigarelli credits strong hitting from top to bottom, along with solid defensive play as the keys to the team’s success.
