PICKERING -- After receiving a flood of com-
plaints about speeding boaters in and around
Frenchman’s Bay, Pickering has implemented
its Baywatch program.
No, residents won’t see the sculpted and
tanned bodies of Pamela Anderson or David
Hasselhoff running in red swimsuits up and
down the beach.
But they may notice a number of signs and
buoys meant to slow down boaters.
The City’s Baywatch program was initiated
by Pickering bylaw officer Brad Suckling, also
a member of the Pickering Auxiliary Rescue
Association.
Over the past year, the City has received
more and more complaints about speeding
boaters in Frenchman’s Bay.
Mr. Suckling said jet and water skiers have
been known to go 20 km/h to 50 km/h in the
area that’s become a popular destination for
tourists, families, hikers, bikers and boaters.

Robin Hood money aids Durham cops
Durham Regional
Police land
$200,000 to fight
e-crimes
BY JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- The bad guys’ loss
is the good guys’ gain.
That’s how Ontario’s Attorney
General described using funds
seized from criminals to bank-
roll the Durham Regional Police
service’s ongoing crime-fighting
efforts.
Chris Bentley was in Whitby
Wednesday to deliver more
than $207,000 to the local force,
money that will be used to
upgrade e-crimes efforts.
The money represents some of
the $13 million recovered under
the Province’s Civil Remedies
Act, which allows the courts to
order forfeiture of proceeds of
crime.
“I call it our Robin Hood leg-
islation,” Mr. Bentley said of the
law, enacted in 2003.
“It allows us to take from the
bad guys and give to the good
people.”
The funding will help Durham
cops combat a growing wave of
e-crime, including child por-
nography, online luring of kids
and computer-based fraud, said
Deputy Chief Scott Burns.
“These types of crime general-
ly prey on our most vulnerable
citizens,” Deputy Chief Burns
said.
“We’ve been successful in
these areas and this grant will
help build on that.”
Mr. Bentley noted the grant
money being awarded to police
services is merit-based, helping
services like Durham’s build on
the foundations they’ve already
established.
“It’s a testament to the police
service,” he said.
The province’s prosecutors
and police have been aggressive
in using the Civil Remedies Act
to target crime.
In Durham Region the legis-
lation has been applied to seize
houses used for marijuana grow
ops, vehicles and furnishings
purchased with proceeds of
crime and, perhaps most nota-
bly, the Hells Angels clubhouse
on Ortono Avenue in Oshawa.
The building was recently
demolished.

Police cannot

PICKERING -- A 40-year-old
Pickering man is dead after a pos-
sible drowning Thursday after-
noon.
Police, fire and emergency
medical services attended 632
Vistula Dr. before 2 p.m. July 22
and found the man dead in his
pool.
“EMS could not revive, and he’s
now deceased,” said Durham
police spokeswoman Sergeant
Nancy van Rooy.
Sgt. van Rooy said police can-
not confirm whether a drowning
or medical issues led to the man’s
death.
Police will canvass the area to
shed some light on the situation,
but won’t know the cause of death
until an autopsy is complete.
“Our investigation will continue
with what happened exactly,” she
said.
A group of young boys was play-
ing in the ravine between Bayly
Street and Vistula Drive when the
boys first heard screams, which
were followed by sirens shortly
after.
“I heard a woman screaming
and it sounded frantic,” said Scott
Chase.
And they were almost certain
their neighbour didn’t make it
when they saw EMS pull the gen-
tleman out to an awaiting ambu-
lance.
“He came out in a blue bath-
ing suit and they were pumping
down on his chest,” said Kane
Kumar.
Scott’s father, Dave Chase, lives
with his family across from the
deceased and said the man and
his girlfriend lived there, and he
believed a friend was visiting.
“They’re fairly new,” he said,
adding the deceased was just an
acquaintance.
The neighbours referred to the
victim as “George,” and were
unaware of his full name.
Police will not release the name
of the deceased until next of kin
approves.
Police cannot confirm who was
at home or in the backyard when
the incident took place.
“I just know that a neighbour
attempted to remove him from
the pool,” Sgt. van Rooy said.
The boys noted the woman who
lives with the man came from
inside into the front yard and
started crying as the deceased
was taken away.

Justin Lui and his family
will travel to Hawaii
for finals in August
MELISSA MANCINI
mmancini@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- A deck of 60 cards with car-
toon characters on them has helped a
local 10-year-old boy win himself a trip
to Hawaii.
Justin Lui plays Pokemon cards, a game
with a cult following internationally,
based on the once-ubiquitous television
cartoon for kids.
The popularity of the show may have
faded -- Justin himself
doesn’t watch it -- but
there are still many
kids and adults who
meet to play a game
with the cards spawned
by the cartoon. He likes
the game so much that
he trained all year and
is now the Canadian
champion in his age
category.
“I started collecting
the cards and I thought
it was fun,” he said. “It
helps me with strate-
gies and helps me in
math.”
The title of champion
earned the Pickering
student two tickets to
the international finals
in Hawaii next month.
It also earned him
$1,500 in scholarship
money. The tourna-
ment will bring Poke-
mon players from
around the world to
fight for the title of champion.
The card game pits two players against
each other. Each player has a deck of
60 cards they use to “battle” when they
throw down a card. Each card has a par-
ticular function and number of points
associated with it. Every player person-
alizes their deck. There are hundreds
of cards to choose from but players can
only battle using 60.
Justin’s whole family will be going
with him to Hawaii. His 12-year-old sis-
ter Kayla and his dad Ray will be taking
their own decks so they can try to win a
last-minute spot in the tournament by
battling on the first day in a last-chance
qualifier.
It’s not the first time the family has
attended the finals. Last year they ven-
tured to San Francisco and incorporat-
ed the tournament as part of their family
vacation. None of the family placed last
year, but Mr. Lui is confident that with
Justin’s improved skills he might be able
to make a mark on the leader board this
year.
“Last year we got dominated by the
kids from out west (Alberta and B.C.),”
Mr. Lui said. “But we’ve been trying out
different strategies this year.”
Justin and Kayla have been practising
and training in Oshawa with a group that
gets together based out of Skyfox Games
cards on William Street in Oshawa, Mr.
Lui said.
Playing with older competitors who
play a strategic game has helped the kids
improve, he said.
The tournament is serious business,
with multiple translators working to
allow players to communicate with their
opponents from around the world. Justin
said the hardest part about competing
internationally is battling without much
verbal communication. Players point
and gesture to move the game along, he
said.
“It’s really hard,” he said.
Besides improving on his past perfor-
mance Justin has another goal while he
is in Hawaii.
“I want to open a coconut,” he said.

Robin Hood money for
cops welcome in Durham
The traditional story of Robin Hood is
one of a heroic outlaw who robs from the
rich to give to the poor.
And the Province of Ontario has its own
version of ‘Robin Hood legislation’, which
sees proceeds of crime seized from crimi-
nals and plowed back into crime-fighting
efforts. It’s an appropriate use of ill-gotten
profits, and ironic to think that criminal
activities actually end up funding police
initiatives.
Durham Regional Police were happy
recipients this week of the legislation’s
benefits. Attorney General Chris Bent-
ley, who made the comparison to Robin
Hood, said the law “allows us to take from
the bad guys and give to the good peo-
ple.” The Civil Remedies Act allows the
courts to order forfeiture of proceeds of
crime, and some of the $13 million recov-
ered is coming Durham’s way.
Our local police force got $207,000 to
upgrade e-crimes efforts, a new fron-
tier of criminal activity since the Internet
became mainstream and ushered in the
era of the information age. The funding
will help Durham cops combat a growing
wave of e-crime, including child pornog-
raphy, online luring of kids and comput-
er-based fraud, said Deputy Chief Scott
Burns.
What’s interesting about the funding to
Durham is that the police, in effect, had
to earn it. Mr. Bentley noted the grant
money being awarded to police services
is merit-based, helping police services
like Durham’s build on the foundations
they’ve already established.
“It’s a testament to the police service,”
he said.
Like a build-it-and-he-will-come sce-
nario, Durham police efforts to make
inroads into e-crimes have been recog-
nized and applauded. Although no one
said so, the funding is merely a drop in
the bucket compared to the annual police
budget of nearly $146 million. While the
funding won’t wipe illegal Internet activ-
ity off the world wide web, and most cer-
tainly won’t affect the bottom line for
taxpayers, free funding is free funding. If
the courts are going to exercise the right
to seize proceeds of crime, it’s gratify-
ing to know some of that funding comes
our way. Deputy Chief Burns notes that
e-crime preys on society’s most vulner-
able members. The Durham police force,
he says, has been “successful” in fighting
these kinds of crimes, and the funding
will help the local force carry on.
And that’s good news for all of us.
Proceeds from criminal activity repre-
sent something originally taken from vic-
tims. It’s deeply gratifying to think those
proceeds are being turned around to pre-
vent even more people from being vic-
timized.
Robin Hood would approve.
Lately I’ve been hearing from folks who
are logging onto Facebook against their
will.
Perhaps that’s a bit dramatic; nobody’s
forcing them to update their status at gun-
point. Still, they want to stop, but simply
can’t resist logging on one more time.
Whether it’s business or personal,
everyone has a reason to consider joining.
Maybe it’s re-connecting with a long-lost
friend, maybe it’s a burning neighbour-
hood issue begging for comment or per-
haps a family member just posted pics of
their newborn baby.
Whatever the motive, it takes just sec-
onds to log on and join.
But to me, the reasons people join Face-
book are a lot less interesting than the rea-
sons they keep quitting and coming back.
Part of it is the coolness factor and cool-
ness is inextricably linked to youth. Face-
book got its start on American college
campuses before spreading around the
world. It used to be the exclusive domain
of 20-somethings, but now the average
Facebook user is in her late 30s and is
most likely to be female.
That means for teens, they’re just as like-
ly to get a friend request from their mom
as they are from someone in their math
class and that just makes it less fun.
For jaded hipsters in their mid-20s,
being caught logging onto Facebook is
tantamount to shopping at Walmart. It’s
just not done. But even for those of us
who self-identify as mainstream nerds,
the reasons to quit are there.
Let’s face it, even if the average Face-
book user has 130 friends, in real life we
don’t have nearly that many people we
can’t live without hearing from every day.
The laws of the Facebook universe dic-
tate that the more people post, the less
interesting their posts become and the
most prolific posters on your friends list
are the ones you’re least likely to have a
conversation with in real life.
While wading through dozens of point-
less status updates on our newsfeeds,
the question inevitably comes: why am I
wasting my time?
One option is to prune our friends list,
but for those with 400 or more friends,
that can take hours. A quicker option is to
quit Facebook altogether. Make one last
status update asking those near and dear
to shoot us an e-mail if they really want to
chat.
But, despite the fact that it only takes a
couple of clicks, quitting isn’t as easy as it
sounds because for many of us Facebook
has become so ubiquitous in our social
lives that deleting our accounts can be
incredibly isolating.
Quitting Facebook means missing out
on breaking news among our friends
and family such as break-ups, make-ups,
new jobs, party invitations and more. The
problem is people on Facebook assume
everyone else is on it too and it’s easy to
forget to include the folks who aren’t.
In the end, most of us quitters come
back. We lament our addiction to Crack-
book and post on.

The wakes from the boat-
ers can create dangerous
waves for swimmers close
to shore, let alone the peo-
ple using the boats them-
selves.
“It’s a small place and
there’s all sorts of hidden
water hazards in the area
and if you’re not aware of
the area you’ll find out the
hard way,” he said, add-
ing these hazards include
rocks and shallow waters.
In Ontario, the unpost-
ed speed limit is 10 km/
h within 30 metres (100
feet) from shore. Accord-
ing to Transport Cana-
da, the fine for speeding
on Canada’s shorelines is
$100.
However, the City real-
ized this limit wasn’t being
enforced.
According to the Dur-
ham Police website, the
Durham Regional Police
Marine Unit “has the most
difficult challenge of any
police marine unit in the
Greater Toronto Area.”
Durham Region is bor-
dered by Lake Ontario to
the south, Lake Simcoe on
the northwest and Lake
Scugog on the northeast.
Dozens of rivers also tra-
verse Durham Region,
and there are several ket-
tle lakes on the Oak Ridg-
es Moraine and numer-
ous private ponds, storm
water management ponds
and water reservoirs they
have to monitor.
Pickering and police
decided installing buoys
and signs to warn boaters of
the speed limit would allow
effective enforcement.
Over the spring the City
consulted with the Pickering
Harbour Company to decide
the best places for the mark-
ers and found the most suit-
able signs and buoys.
It cost less than $2,000 to
install the buoys and signs
throughout Frenchman’s
Bay, the Pickering yacht
club and marina, Mr. Suck-
ling said.
“The police are now going
out and enforcing it happi-
ly,” he said.
In fact the unit has been
stopping boats for speeding
infractions, licence checks,
and the promotion of over-
all boating and marine safe-
ty.
“I think it’s a good and
important addition to the
city,” said Mayor Dave Ryan.
He said the program not
only promotes safety, but
also benefits the environ-
ment by reducing erosion
on the shoreline that results
from the waves caused by
speeders.
“Frenchman’s Bay is
becoming one of the GTA’s
premier attractions,” he said
in a press release.
“It is important that it con-
tinues to be an enjoyable
and safe destination for our
residents and visitors alike.”
BOATING FINES
The following fines are listed on
Transport Canada’s website:
• Operating a vessel in a care-
less manner - $250
• Speeding - $100
• Underage operation of a per-
sonal watercraft - $100
• Operating a power-driven
pleasure craft without the
required operator card - $250
• Insufficient number of
approved, appropriately sized
flotation devices - $200 for
each absent device
The site has a number of
resources available to encour-
age boating safety.

set over two-day
festival
DON CAMPBELL
dcampbell@durhamregion.com
UXBRIDGE -- Clean off your
kilts, unwrap the haggis and get
ready to toss a caber or two.
The 16th annual Highlands of
Durham Games is set to again
invade Elgin Park July 24 and
25, bringing a unique blend of
traditional Scottish entertain-
ment, food and more.
Event organizer Steve Harri-
son said he is glad to be hold-
ing the festival once again in
Uxbridge.
“I’ve been to highland games
all over the world, but the set-
ting in Elgin Park is one of the
nicest,” he said.
“It’s a picturesque setting and
it’s always a great event when
we hold it there.”
Haggis Hurling -- where con-
testants throw the tradition-
al Scottish dish to a teammate
who then has to catch it in their
kilt -- is back again for a second
year in a row.
But for those preferring to eat
their food, there will be a butter
tart competition and plenty of
other Scottish fare and refresh-
ments available.
Heavy events, such as the
caber toss, stone putt and ham-
mer throw are again in the line-
up.
Music will include perfor-
mances by 15 pipe bands who
will also play together twice
a day during a massed band
ceremony. The award-win-
ning, Celtic-inspired band Poor
Angus will also perform. More
than 300 highland dancers will
showcase their talents.
Mr. Harrison said there will
be a classic car and tractor show
as well as a dog and cattle show.
An expanded kids’ pavilion with
a full slate of activities will be
running on both days and plen-
ty of Celtic artisans will display
their work.
The always popular avenue of
the clans is back with a unique
twist.
“We are trying to make this
as much of a Celtic celebration
as possible so we opened it up
to Irish clans this year as well,”
said Mr. Harrison. “We hope
many can make it out.”
The two-day festival is a non-
profit family event with pro-
ceeds going to community
groups who help run the gates,
said Mr. Harrison.
Proceeds from this year’s
event will go towards a Sun-
day school group and the Lucy
Maud Montgomery Society of
Ontario.
An adult day pass for the event
is $20.

Compassion yoga in Ajax helps young mom
All proceeds for
cancer victim and
family
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- A local yoga teacher
hopes to channel compassion,
love and hope for a friend and
young mother of two who’s bat-
tling cancer.
Ajax resident and yoga instruc-
tor Carole Seens is offering a five-
week “Yoga of Compassion” class
designed for people of all ages.
Proceeds will go to her friend
Karen McNally, who was recent-
ly diagnosed with brain cancer,
despite receiving a clean bill of
health just two months ago.
“It’s a gentle, gentle class,” Ms.
Seens said.
Ms. Seens, who is a Kripalu-
trained yoga instructor, explained
the class contains gentle stretch-
es, deep breathing, some standing
and seated postures, and includes
meditation to send peace and bal-
ance for oneself and the world.
“In the deepest place in our
hearts we long to be free - free
from our suffering, free from our
emotional pain and mental dis-
tress,” she said in an e-mail pro-
moting the fundraiser.
Ms. McNally was in a coma last
summer and diagnosed with can-
cer. She went through a number
of chemotherapy and radiation
treatments, and experimental
drugs, and was declared cancer-
free two months ago. But follow-
ing a recent seizure, her doctor
diagnosed her with brain cancer,
only giving her three weeks to four
months to live.
She and her husband have a
four-year-old daughter and a six-
year-old son.
“We’re just praying there’s a mir-
acle,” Ms. Seens said.
Ms. McNally used to work for
Odyssey Books and Resource Cen-
tre in Pickering Village, a meta-
physical store that offers books,
classes and gifts. Ms. McNally her-
self performed hands-on heal-
ing and spiritual readings and
designed a deck of cards with
writings of peace, love and healing
poetry that she had published.
Those cards were used in a
recent “healing circle” at Odys-
sey, along with a white rose
meant to help her heal.
The cards and rose will also be
present at the yoga classes.
“She is a very sweet, loving
angel,” Ms. Seens said. “She’s
just an earth angel.”
Ms. McNally wants to fly to
California for treatment, and her
friend hopes the fundraiser will
assist in sending her there.
The classes will take place
Mondays beginning July 26 from
7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. George’s
Anglican Church, 77 Randall Dr.,
Ajax. Newcomers should arrive
by 6:40 p.m. to sign up.
The five-week session (which
runs until Aug. 30, excluding
Aug. 2) is $75; drop-in classes
are $20.
Attendees should take a yoga
mat, or the session can be done
in a chair.
Donations are also being
accepted at Odyssey, 109 Old
Kingston Rd., Unit 15, Ajax.

Advertising FeatureG&Home,
We all try our best to maintain a clean,
healthy living space for ourselves and our
families. But there are many germs linger-
ing around our homes that we could be
missing.
Of course it’s impossible to avoid coming
into contact with all germs and viruses but if
you are aware of what is in your home, you
have a better chance of defending against
them. Here are some of the hot spots in your
home you may not have considered:
Hand towels
In home bathrooms with heavy foot traf-
fi c, shared cloth towels are often damp and
germy due to overuse. Even if a towel looks
clean, it may have viral, bacterial or fungal
contaminants which can be transferred to
hands when drying them. Health Canada
recommends not using a common hand tow-
el to dry hands. Instead, use a one-time use
towel so you know you are getting a clean,
fresh, dry towel every time.
Pet food dishes
Pets don’t always practice good hygiene,
and nor do we when it comes to their dishes.
Pet bowls are often left unwashed for lon-
ger than they should be and as a result they
collect germs and bacteria. Be sure to wash
Fido’s dishes regularly to keep both pets and
family members healthy.
Light switches and door knobs
Light switches (including lamp switches)
and door knobs see a lot of hand traffi c
each day and that makes them a hot spot for
germs. Cleaning them off regularly – once
a week when people are healthy or daily if
someone is ill - with antibacterial wipes or
sprays will help keep the spread of germs
down.
Purses, briefcases and backpacks
When we are out and about we often place
our bags on the fl oors of restaurants, offi ces
and even public washrooms. By doing this
our bags can pick up all kinds of germs and
bacteria, so make sure you wipe off bags
regularly to avoid tracking contaminants
into the home.
Salt, pepper and spices
Most of us are good about making sure the
utensils, cutting boards and plates we use
when cooking are properly cleaned to avoid
the spread of bacteria like salmonella. But
what about spices, and salt and pepper shak-
ers? Make sure whatever you touch when
you are handling raw food gets a proper wipe
down to avoid any unnecessary illness.

Mr. Impossible showing his work

CLARINGTON -- Gordon Smith
is surrounded by familiar objects,
but he feels out of place.
He’s one of the most success-
ful and innovative special effects
creators in film history, but to
see his creations on display at
the Visual Arts Centre of Clar-
ington is a new experience
for him. Smith has never
exhibited his work, never
even thought of it until he
was invited to do so by
the VAC’s Craig Ryan.
“I’m flabbergasted; this
is just junk from my stu-
dio,” he says in an inter-
view at the July 18 open-
ing reception of the show.
“Seeing it like this, I’m
flabbergasted.”
Well, maybe not junk.
Smith means that the
pieces have had their
time, perhaps no
more than a second
or two, on screen.
They’ve all been
used; they no
longer have a practical purpose.
Most movie fans will find
something recognizable in the
more than 100 items on display.
There’s Mystique from X-Men
and the giant bat, or parts of it,
from Graveyard Shift. Facial casts
designed for actors in films such
as Truman and 4 Brothers. Mod-
els, props, drawings and pho-
tographs, all created by the tal-
ented crew Smith assembled to
work with him at his company,
FX Smith. Among Smith’s con-
tributions to the world of special
effects is the silicon, gel-filled
prosthetic that can be used for
a face, an arm, any body part.
Before that, actors had to rou-
tinely undergo hours of make-up
work to get foam glued on to their
skin. He and the fine artists he
employed and toiled with worked
without computers, before digital
processes took over the industry.
“It’s so hard to do all of this, the
risk factor is really high,” Smith
says. “There’s probably about
a 98 per cent chance of fail-
ure. In the digital world, it
doesn’t matter if it
doesn’t work, you do it again.”
It wasn’t about egos at FX
Smith, but about creating the
best work possible.
“My studio has always repre-
sented for me the state of the art,
both creatively and technically,”
Smith says.
It’s amazing that he got into the
business of creating often grue-
some effects for the screen in the
first place. He has “a very severe
blood phobia” from his father’s
death of leukemia. And Smith
never intended to get into this
line of work. He has a classical
education in theatre and started
in the industry as an actor.
His first big effects job was to
re-create open heart surgery for
the 1982 film Threshold. It
was said to be impos-
sible, but in the years
that followed Smith
became Mr. Impos-
sible, maybe Mr. Mis-
sion Impossible.
“Almost every-
thing I do is deemed
impossible; that’s why
they call me,” he says.
“By the time it gets to
me, it has been consid-
ered impossible.”
Smith’s work begins from
the script. And while any-
thing goes in a writer’s imagi-
nation, actually making the thing
he or she conceived, making it
move or appear a certain
way, is Smith’s practical
challenge.
“I have a script
and I have to
interpret
the words
written in
the script
to the
image,”
he says.
Sometimes he would call for
changes to the script because,
in creating a piece, he’d discover
that it just couldn’t do what was
written there.
He left the film industry five
years ago, bitterly, after what he
describes as jealousy made him
a target, blackballed. All the cre-
ativity in Hollywood is now at the
mercy of “the bean counters,” he
says.
Smith’s building a new compa-
ny, making a jump from the film
to the music industry. Typically,
he’s aiming for the sky.
“We’ve developed a whole
new performance format for live
music,” he says.
The Clarington exhibit is
intended to make the view-
er consider the process behind
the movie magic, the creativity
involved. But heck, Smith also
had a blast doing it all.
“Look around. I’ve had a gas.
I’ve had such a good time,” he
says.
“I fell into it and was lucky
enough to have wonderful peo-
ple help me do it.”
Visit Smith’s website at www.
fxsmith.com.

BOWMANVILLE -- World
renowned special effects artist
Gordon Smith, whose resume
includes work on films such as
X-Men, has an exhibit on dis-
play at the Visual Arts Centre of
Clarington until Aug. 29, includ-
ing Mystique from the X-Men
films. Smith was at the opening
reception on July 18.
Lifelong Ajax resident and
multi-discipline artist Dave Zak
has decided he will no longer
make fine art to sell.
Trying to make a living from
his mixed media collages is just
a bad model for art-making, he
declares.
And, besides, it takes all the
fun out of being creative.
So, he figures he will just make
his art pieces spontaneously
and without any thought of dis-
playing or selling them.
And when the time comes
when he has sufficient works for
a show, it will simply be a cel-
ebration and a party -- and if
something sells, that will be a
bonus.
Lucky for him that, at his rel-
atively young age, he is firmly
established as a multi-media
advertising designer with an
impressive and long list of cli-
ents that includes BlackBerry,
Nike, Walmart, Chrysler and
Bank of America, for starters.
He operates as art director for
teams of copywriters, editors
and designers who produce vid-
eos used online and in-store to
promote products and services.
Zak’s post-secondary educa-
tion began with multi-media
design studies at Fanshawe Col-
lege in London, continued with
a two-year course in anima-
tion at Durham College and just
ended with him completing a
fine art degree at York Univer-
sity.
All of this groundwork led him
to practise what he calls motion
design, the interweaving of dis-
ciplines as diverse as music,
video, digital imagery, collage
and painting into his commer-
cial art and fine art products.
Not content with a solid
advertising business and a bur-
geoning fine art career (he has
shown in outdoor shows, res-
taurants and galleries and has
numerous completed commis-
sions to his credit), Zak’s lively
imagination has conjured up
various related entrepreneurial
interests including marketing a
special line of the resin he uses
on his artworks and a book-pub-
lishing enterprise.
He and his fiancée, artist
Rebecca Codack, have followed
their urge to involve themselves
in social justice and environ-
mental issues, establishing web-
sites and foundations to help
raise awareness of causes dear
to them.
But mostly Zak loves to escape
from the non-stop busyness of
the work-a-day world into the
freedom of making his unique
multi-media collages.
See some of this terrific art
and check out all of Zak’s enter-
prises at www.davezak.com.

AJAX -- The Ajax Cricket Club celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday with a friendly game
between some of its members. Jiggs Pateo hit a ball in front of catcher Ryan Netram.
DURHAM -- It was a great weekend
for a regatta and there were some
great results from Durham Row-
ing Club members at the CORA St.
Catharine’s regatta.
The day started early for the
U17 Men’s crew. Mike Alcorn and
Ryan Lamoureux, from Uxbridge,
crossed the finish line in third, win-
ning the bronze medal. Next up
was the U23 Women’s Single race
where Rachelle Krause was up
against some very tough compe-
tition. She kept the race close and
finished fifth. In the first masters
race of the season, Jessica Sherwin
took to the water in the Master’s
Women’s Single, and after a close
race crossed the finish line at the
front of the pack to take the gold.
The next race for the Durham
crew was Adam Ballard and Scott
Wilson in the Sr. Men’s Doubles. It
was a hard fought race for second
place but the duo were not able
to close the gap in the final stages
taking the bronze medal. Connor
Lamoureux and Ryan Lamoureux,
from Uxbridge, then moved into
the starting gate for the U19 Men’s
Doubles. They were up against
some tough competition and were
able to cross the finish line ahead of
the Argonaut team that also raced
in the U17 Men’s Doubles race.
The final races of the day for the
Durham crew were the U17 Men’s
Single races. Mike Alcorn, Ryan
Lamoureux and Connor Lamou-
reux were the respective rowers in
the three U17 single races. Mike
Alcorn got out into second place
through 1000m where he put up a
good fight but was unable to hold
off two other rowers from St. Cath-
arine’s and Silver Lake and was
overtaken and placed fourth. Ryan
Lamoureux was off in the next race.
Having already rowed two races, he
came into this race a little tired. He
was able to keep two boats behind
him and placed fourth. The last
race of the day for the Durham crew
was Connor Lamoureux in the U17
Men’s Singles. He got himself into
third position quickly and was able
to hold on to third through to the
finish line for the bronze medal.
After resting for the remainder of
the day the master’s rowers were
back at it the following day for the
ROW ONTARIO Master’s Champi-
onship.
Jessica Sherwin started the day
off in the Women’s Lightweight
Singles. She quickly got out into the
lead and increased it as the race
progressed, finishing with a time of
4:49.54 to take the gold. Her second
race was the women’s singles race.
This was a close race that saw her
cross the line in third place with a
time of 5:03.37 for the bronze.
The third race of the day for Dur-
ham was a mixed doubles with Jes-
sica Sherwin and Adam Ballard.
The pair were racing for first place
but couldn’t quite catch the crew
from Barrie and finished six sec-
onds back from the lead in sec-
ond place taking home the silver
medal.
The final race of the day was
Adam Ballard in the men’s singles.
He started off the race slow but
was able close on the second place
rower from Western, finishing
3.07 seconds behind second place
at 4:26.94 to take home a bronze
medal.

CALGARY -- George Burnett will
be spending his Christmas holi-
days trying to guide Canada’s junior
hockey team to a gold medal.
Hockey Canada, in partnership
with the Canadian Hockey League,
announced Tuesday that Burnett,
head coach and general manager of
the OHL’s Belleville Bulls, has been
named assistant coach of Canada’s
national junior team for the 2011
IIHF world junior championship in
Buffalo and Niagara, N.Y.
The Courtice resident, 48, replac-
es Bob Boughner, who is stepping
down as head coach of the OHL’s
Windsor Spitfires to become assis-
tant coach of the NHL’s Columbus
Blue Jackets starting in the 2010-11
season. Burnett will also continue
as head coach of Canada’s national
men’s summer under-18 team for
the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka
tournament in Slovakia and the
Czech Republic.
Burnett has spent 13 seasons as a
head coach in the Ontario Hockey
League, six with the Belleville Bulls.
He has also been bench boss for
Niagara Falls, Guelph and Oshawa,
winning the OHL Coach of the
Year award twice, during the 1990-
91 and 1991-92 seasons. The Port
Perry native also coached the NHL’s
Edmonton Oilers for 35 games dur-
ing the 1994-95 season and led

Wayne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door
business a new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile Showroom
which just may be the only one in Canada.
“The day is gone when you carried some
brochures and a sample window to a customer’s
home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired
North York Mobile Library truck and installed
interior walls along with all of my window
samples.”
When you call Durham Windows and Doors
for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your
door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter
by way of a sliding patio door.
Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs
series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll
discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned
without going outside.
“After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these
are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple
sealed to reduce air leakage and come with
heavy duty hardware.”
All Vinyl Window Designs windows come
with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet
rays keeping your home cooler in the summer
and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes
and furniture.
All of the windows come with a lifetime
warranty on the frame, hardware and glass.
Wayne would also like
his customers to know that
he does all of the estimates
personally, eliminating the cost
of a salesperson.
Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations,
which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the
best possible price.
Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in
Oshawa.

Dolphins post pair of wins
Beat TNT and
Orangeville in
four day span
DURHAM -- The Ajax
Pickering Dolphins Senior
Varsity OMFL team posted
a pair of victories over a
four-day period.
On July 15, the Dol-
phins played a resched-
uled game that was rained
out on Dolphins Day and
beat the visiting TNT
Express 37-1. The ‘Phins
defence dominated the
visiting team and was led
by Lamar Wade-Henry
and Rob Sinclair. The
offence received touch-
downs from Dustin Kaupp
and D’Shane Chung along
with Tristan Clough and
Donald Marshall with all
converts coming from the
foot of Taylor Eskins.
Last weekend, Pickering
traveled to Orangeville to
take on the Outlaws. Once
again the Dolphins played
well on both sides of the
ball and defeated their
opponent 37-6. Scoring
two touchdowns apiece
for Pickering were Tristan
Clough and Roynelle Mer-
edith, with Martin Downey
and Curtis Inniss bringing
in additional TDs. Taylor
Eskins added an addition-
al seven points with six
converts and a single.
The defence played a
strong game as a group
and only allowed one
touchdown early in the
game.
The Senior Dolphins
wrap up their regular sea-
son in the Battle of Dur-
ham against their rivals
the Durham Knights at
Kinsmen Park in Pickering
on Saturday night at 7.

DURHAM -- Daniel Tomei, #9, braced for contact after running a reverse for posi-
tive yardage. The Ajax-Pickering Senior Dolphins won their game 37-6 against the
Orangeville Outlaws.
SOCCER
Rogatinsky joins Durham College
OSHAWA -- Durham Col-
lege women’s soccer head
coach David Staley did not
have to look far to fill the
void left in the Lords lineup
from graduating seniors as
he added two local stand-
out recruits for the 2010
season.
Joining the Lords will
be Chelsey Rogatinsky, of
Pickering, and Katelyn Hul-
cio, of Whitby, who will look
to make an impact during
their freshmen season.
Rogatinsky, a Dunbar-
ton grad, joins the Lords
with quite an impressive
resumé. Playing youth soc-
cer with the Ajax Storm,
her team went on to win
two Ontario Youth Soccer
League (OYSL) provincial
titles and was named the
2004 Ontario team of the
year.
Rogatinsky was active
throughout high school
as she was a member of a
number of varsity teams
including soccer, basketball
and hockey. She was also
strong in academics as she
won the Dunbarton applied
design award and gradu-
ated as an Ontario scholar.
She appeared in the popu-
lar Metroland publication
Faces of the Future, rep-
resenting Rosebank Road
Public School, where she
was the valedictorian and
top female athlete.
“Chelsey is a strong
defender who has great
technical skills,” said Stal-
ey. “She can also add a little
offence as she has the abil-
ity to score from long-range

In Loving Memory of
DON and BRYAN GAINER
Tragically taken too soon by an impaired driver
DON - October 12, 1950 - July 23, 2000
BRYAN - September 13, 1988 - July 23, 2000
10 years ago our world came crashing down
and stopped when we lost both of you.
Yet the world did not stop.
Slowly and painfully we have had to fi nd our way to living
in this world together and separately, without you. We are
thankful for the loving support of many family members
and friends who have helped us along our grief journey.
Forever Loved, Never Forgotten by
Eva (wife and mother, moving to B.C.)
James (son and brother, Peterborough)
Sara (daughter and sister, Oshawa)
and extended family.
Don ~ Every man's life is a plan of God.
Don's friendship was an inspiration, his love a blessing.
Bryan ~ So small, so sweet, so soon.
With us for a little while, with Jesus forever.
