AJAX -- Jay Kaufman has been named the new chairman of the Rouge Valley Health System board of directors. He has been a member
of the board since 2001. Community focus for new chairman
JANET ECKER ENDS TWO-YEAR TERM AT AJAX-PICKERING
KRISTEN CALIS

AJAX -- After years of serving on the hospital
board, Jay Kaufman has taken the top seat.
The former deputy minister of Ontario finance
has been named chairman of the Rouge Valley
Health System (RVHS) board of directors. For-
mer chairwoman Janet Ecker’s term has ended,
but she’ll remain on the board.
“Janet’s been a tremendous chair for the orga-
nization,” Mr. Kaufman said in an interview.
“She’s helped us move forward under her watch,
not just in terms of our deficit reduction plan, but
a real focus on quality.”
As for his appointment, Mr. Kaufman “was
delighted.”
But the decision to take on the role wasn’t a
simple one. “It’s something that you have to con-
sider carefully because as chair, you’re making
a significant commitment in terms of your time
and the leadership you’re going to provide your
colleagues, and the working relationship with the
management team and leadership at the hospi-
tal,” he said.

Liberal leader Ignatieff says
Conservatives have ‘washed
their hands’ of nuclear industry
JENNIFER STONE
jstone@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff
brought his cross-Canada tour to Ajax Thursday,
inviting business leaders into the “big red tent at the
centre of Canadian life.”
The Liberal Express left Ottawa earlier this week
on a tour designed to have the Opposition leader
meet Canadians in anticipation of a possible fed-
eral election. He made two stops in Ajax, includ-
ing a luncheon held by the Ajax-Pickering Board of
Trade.
There, he tackled an array of business issues,
including the proposed Pickering airport and nucle-
ar energy, in answer to questions from members of
the audience.
The airport was the first issue raised, with board of
trade president Jason Cameron asking if Mr. Ignati-
eff would do anything to ensure release of the needs
assessment completed by the Greater Toronto Air-
port Authority and currently in the hands of the fed-
eral government.
Thousands of acres in
north Pickering were expropri-
ated almost four decades ago
for a future airport, but as yet,
no decision on whether to pro-
ceed has been announced. That
limbo should end, and the com-
munity should be consulted,
Mr. Ignatieff said. While he said
he does feel “emphatically” the
report should be released, he’s
not sure an airport should be
built there.
“My feeling as I listen to this . . . is that the busi-
ness case for this airport has not been proved,” Mr.
Ignatieff said.
There is a need for community consultation on the
issue, and should the airport idea be nixed, a dis-
cussion needs to take place about what should hap-
pen with the lands, he said.
“There is enormous opportunity here,” he said.
Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan brought up the uncer-
tainty Durham finds itself dealing with in terms of
the nuclear industry.
In large part, the uncertainty stems from the com-
bination of the planned mothballing of reactors in
Pickering in the foreseeable future, and a delay on
proceeding with new reactors in Clarington.
Critics charge the latter has been hobbled by the
federal government’s decision to restructure and
possibly sell Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, the
Crown corporation that provided the only compli-
ant bid to build new reactors next to the existing
Darlington station.
While there’s room to improve AECL, simply walking
away from it is not acceptable, Mr. Ignatieff said.
“The government has basically said, we’re washing our
hands, we’re walking away,” from AECL, he said.
“Walking away from this Canadian achievement seems to
me a strategic mistake and there is no area of the country
that feels this more strongly than this region.”
Mr. Ignatieff also touched on the need to ensure proper
training to fill jobs of the future, and said the federal govern-
ment ought play a role in that, as should business, labour,
educational institutions, and others.
“We’ve got one job and that is to get Canada ready for the
21st century,” Mr. Ignatieff said. “If we start playing juris-
dictional games, we won’t get it done.”
The Liberal leader acknowledged he knew “not everybody
in this room is a Liberal,” but made a pitch nonetheless.
“Come on in to the big red tent at the centre of Canadian
life,” he said.

SURVIVING A
HEART
ATTACK.
All-new cardiac
initiative saving
lives throughout
Durham.
A message from your local
community hospital. The best at what we do.
Every year, thousands of Canadians die
from heart attacks because they don’t
receive medical treatment soon enough.
Rouge Valley and partnering hospitals
and local emergency service providers
have a new system-wide program in
place to respond more rapidly when
patients in the community suffer from
a heart attack. Learn to recognize the
signs so that you can make the call to
save a life.
KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS. A heart
attack occurs when blood supply to
the heart is slowed or stopped because
of a blockage in the coronary arteries.
Here are the signs of a heart attack:
Pain—A burning sensation, tight-
ness or pressure in the chest, neck,
jaw, shoulder, arms or back that
doesn’t go away with rest. This pain
may be more vague in women.
Difficulty breathing.
Nausea—Indigestion, vomiting.
Sweating—Cool, clammy skin.
CALL 911 RIGHT AWAY! If someone
is experiencing these signs, call 911
immediately. When you make this call,
the new regional Code STEMI program
for responding to cardiac emergencies
goes into action!
Heart attack patients in Durham Region
are fast-tracked to the catheterization
lab at Rouge Valley Centenary, where
an expert team works to restore blood
flow to the heart.
It’s critical to get to the hospital as
soon as possible, because the longer
the artery stays blocked the worse
the damage will be. That’s why the
priority for Rouge Valley and our
partners is to ensure that patients get
the treatment they need as quickly
as possible.

P HOSPITAL BOARD
New chairman ready for challenge at Ajax-Pickering
Mr. Kaufman has held a num-
ber of senior positions within
the Ontario government, such as
secretary to the treasury board
and assistant deputy minister of
health. He also had a career with
the Manitoba government, where
he was, among other positions, a
deputy minister responsible for
health reform in the province.
“I got to a point in my career
where I found it was time to focus
back on my community,” he said.
So he joined the Rouge Valley
board in 2001 and was vice-chair-
man for the past two.
“Jay brings to this leadership
role not only familiarity with
RVHS due to his time on the
board, but also a depth of experi-
ence and knowledge of the health
care system, which will be of great
benefit to the board and the hos-
pital,” Ms. Ecker said in a press
release.
Mr. Kaufman said Ontario hos-
pitals have a number of challeng-
es ahead, such as accommodat-
ing the aging population, dealing
with the shortage of doctors and
other health care professionals,
and increased service demands
while working under strict finan-
cial constraints.
“The hospital business is an
ongoing challenge,” he said. “The
pressures and challenges simply
increase.”
The board will consider the
challenges in its decision making,
and will continue to engage and
respect the Durham community,
he said.
“There’s a very rapidly expand-
ing population in the area,” he
said.
Rouge Valley is currently put-
ting together its strategic plan by
collecting information from the
community, staff and profession-
als. The three-year plan should be
complete by the end of this year.
“We’ve got to make sure we are
staying on track with our finan-
cial situation, that we continue to
invest in surpluses, improve ser-
vice, continue to focus and make
sure we’re getting value for tax-
payer dollars,” he said.
Although Rouge Valley was crit-
icized in recent years for misman-
agement before climbing out of a
massive deficit, he feels things are
looking up.
“The organization is working
together in a way it hasn’t before
and I think we’re getting recog-
nized for that,” he said.
He said residents simply have to
look at the Ajax-Pickering hospi-
tal to see the improvements.
“We’re starting to be able to
reinvest in our hospital,” he said.
Mr. Kaufman lives in west
Rouge, Toronto, and is the presi-
dent of KTA Inc., a consulting and
research organization.
The other returning board
members are Bob Oldman, Joan
Wideman and Tom Atkins.

Women, minorities can Make
a Difference in Durham Region
As Durham Region’s population and
communities evolve, so too should its
political representation. Durham is home
to people from around the world who
bring with them different life experiences,
contrasting viewpoints, cultural traditions
and new perspectives.
It no longer makes sense that municipal
and regional government representatives
are still made up primarily of white men
in a region in which nearly 17 per cent of
its population consists of members of var-
ious visible minorities. Women, too, con-
tinue to be under-represented on munici-
pal councils, despite the impressive lead-
ership and examples set by, for instance,
Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce, or Whitby
Mayor Pat Perkins.
Similarly, only two members of visible
minority groups serve voters in two Dur-
ham municipalities: Renrick Ashby in
Ajax, and Willie Woo in Clarington.
If voters -- and political candidates --
in Durham Region are intent on making
a difference this Oct. 25 when ballots are
cast municipally across the region, we
strongly encourage a broader spectrum
of residents to consider representing their
communities, or to engage themselves in
the process and send a strong message
about participation, civic responsibil-
ity and taking action. Municipal govern-
ments that represent their communities
with a wide spectrum of personalities,
cultures, nationalities -- and yes, even
gender -- can provide a broader scope
of viewpoints. Greater consensus can be
found in greater diversity. Different life
experiences can lead to varied insight into
municipal issues. And a greater, represen-
tative mix of fresh ideas will lead to more
equitable, inclusive decisions for com-
munities in Durham Region.
People like mayors Pearce and Perkins
have made a difference in their com-
munities, as have councillors Ashby and
Woo. They bring individual skills to the
council table, but are willing to compro-
mise for the collective greater good. They
represent their communities with distinc-
tion and grace.
Durham should be long past the patri-
archal dominance of municipal politics.
In a perfect world, the region’s municipal
governments would have equal represen-
tation from Caucasian males, women and
members of visible minority groups. The
municipal election being held in commu-
nities across Durham Region on Oct. 25
provides a perfect opportunity for voters
-- and candidates -- to truly make a dif-
ference in governance over the next four
years. Whether male or female, white,
black, Asian, European or native, it’s up to
you. Try to Make A Difference.

Facebook is photos.
From weddings and vacations to proud
bakers commemorating a perfect batch of
chocolate chip cookies, we visually mark the
minutia of our lives online.
Frankly, I can’t be bothered to check out
every photo my friends share, but this week
two albums really caught my eye.
The first was a totally awesome set of pics
snapped by my friend Nikki at Lady Gaga’s
Toronto gig. On a more serious note, Toronto
police Facebooked photos of suspected G20
vandals they’re hoping to identify.
Following the vandalism, Toronto police
put out a call to the public asking for their
photos and videos and it looks like many
complied. The suspects are often shown
from multiple angles and in many cases the
pictures are perfectly in focus.
One photo captures a man stealing a lap-
top from a cop car, a little smirk on his face as
he pulls it through a broken window; anoth-
er shows a vandal taking a hammer to a
store window. The majority of photos depict
young men jumping on police cars.
Below the photos, police have supplied
their contact information and a handy link
for anonymous tipsters to the Crime Stop-
pers website.
The photos have a drawn a smattering of
comments, some deriding the vandals and
some deriding the police. Still, I suspect some
of them will end up being identified. Every-
one has casual acquaintances who would
have no qualms about firing off a quick tip.
The Toronto police force as a whole has
embraced social media. Not only do they
post on Facebook, they’re also on YouTube
and on Twitter (@TorontoPolice) with more
than 6,000 followers.
What’s particularly interesting about their
approach is that it’s incredibly interactive.
They could choose to lock down their Face-
book wall, preventing others from comment-
ing, but instead there’s thriving discussion
among the public about the role of police,
with critics often posting most frequently.
Anti-police videos are posted on the wall and
the ‘photos from others’ section includes a
“Bill Bliar” poster with Toronto police chief
Bill Blair sporting a Pinocchio-esque nose.
The photos submitted by police aren’t just
mug shots, but also include officers engaging
in a torch run for the Special Olympics and
photos of graduates at the Toronto Police
College. All of it is open to public feedback.
The Twitter page is also similarly inter-
active. In addition to summarizing press
releases, Constable Scott Mills answers ques-
tions from the public and re-tweets messag-
es, mainly those of encouragement, though
sometimes critical ones as well.
Locally, although Durham police have
a YouTube channel (youtube.com/user/
durhampolice1) and they go online in the
course of investigations, the force has yet to
embrace social media from a communica-
tions perspective. That’s likely because the
police force can only hire so many officers a
year and there’s always a more pressing need
than an officer who tweets and Facebooks
all day. But ultimately, Durham police will
come to recognize that online community
engagement is just as important as pounding
the pavement on local streets.

Police challenge EMS
workers in Sirens for Life
blood donor program
KEITH GILLIGAN
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- They see the need for blood
almost every day and they’re rolling up
their sleeves.
Emergency services personnel in Durham
Region are taking part in the seventh annu-
al Sirens for Life blood donor initiative. The
goal is to collect 1,300 units by Sept. 6, as
well as signing up 100 new One Match Stem
Cell and Marrow Network registrants.
Firefighters, police and emergency medi-
cal services employees, along with families
and friends, are taking part in the drive.
During a press conference at the Regional
headquarters announcing the event, Police
Chief Mike Ewles dropped the gauntlet to
the EMS, saying, “Game on, brother. Game
on.”
Steve McNenly, deputy chief of the Dur-
ham EMS, took up the challenge, saying in
an interview, “Game on to you too, chief.”
Summer is usually a slow time for blood
donations, as many people are on holi-
days. However, the need for blood doesn’t
decrease, as more people are out and active
during the summer.
April Cullen, an Oshawa councillor and
chairwoman of the Region’s health and
social services committee, noted, “It’s quite
a challenge. Everyone is on vacation and
busy with their families. It’s a challenge to
maintain the blood supply.”
Deborah Hunte, who works with the Min-
istry of the Attorney General, has sickle cell
anemia and needs blood regularly. She
spoke of the need to maintain the supply,
saying, “I’m the fruit of your labour.
“It’s definitely an amazing challenge. For
recipients, we thank you for what you’re
doing. Your job, day in and day out, you see
the need for blood first hand. I’m here to
thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Ms. Hunte’s twin sister, Sandra Hunte-
Fedeli, died 10 years ago from sickle cell
anemia and “I miss her every single day. It’s
10 years and it still feels like yesterday.”
The life expectancy for someone with sick-
le cell is 46. Ms. Hunte is 46.
She’s a member of the speakers’ bureau set
up by the Canadian Blood Services.
“What you guys are doing here, you are
saving my life and all the crazy things I do.
I ride a motorcycle. My parents hate it. I sky
dive. I live my life to the fullest,” Ms. Hunte
said.
“We’re all contributing members of soci-
ety. That’s all we ask for. What you’re doing
here today is so important for us recipients.
You are my heroes,” she added.
While the recent press conference was
going on, a blood donor clinic was being
held at the Regional headquarters.
James Goheen of Canadian Blood Services
said, “Based on the traffic I see downstairs,
I’m sure it will be a terrific event.”
The demand for blood has increased, he
noted, up two per cent during the current
fiscal year. CBS needs 927,000 units annu-
ally and “that’s a big number,” he said. “We
need roughly 85,000 new donors and that’s a
big number.”
The Sirens for Life is “vitally important
to the blood supply. It maintains the sup-
ply when other donors are on vacation,” Mr.
Goheen stated. “We are going to be success-
ful. They (emergency services people) know
the need. They are the life savers again.”

DON CAMPBELL

DURHAM -- Life happens in the
blink of an eye.
For Uxbridge artists Daniel Colby
and Emily Martin, capturing the
fleeting moments of the human
experience is the essence behind
their work on display at The Robert
McLaughlin Gallery.
The exhibit, called Transient
Nature, which also features the
work of Whitby artist Linda Heffer-
nan, explores the theme of imper-
manence in human existence. And
while each artist uses a different
method, they manage to connect to
the central theme on many differ-
ent levels.
Colby thrives on the awkward-
ness and vulnerability of youth.
That isn’t to say he personifies those
qualities. Rather, he seeks them out
as inspiration for his work.
“I think people are most beauti-
ful and attractive when they are at
their most awkward and vulnera-
ble,” he said.
“Transitioning from childhood to
adulthood is very precarious and
I also think it’s the most dramatic
period of life. It’s also why I am so
interested in capturing it.”
His work in the exhibit can be
broken into two categories. His
portraits are meant to capture and
“document an existing person dur-
ing a specific time.”
On the other hand, his “painted
fictions” are what he describes as
“invented scenes that tell narrative
moments before or after an event.”
In his painting Freshman, two
young men sit beside each other
in their school dorm room staring
into space. While not based on real
people or events, they help illus-
trate a particular idea he has about
that period of transition and the
vivid memories that accompany it.
While Colby is most interested in
people as subjects, Martin prefers
to use objects.
“I am attracted to objects and his-
tory,” she said.
Many of her pieces use various
types of fabrics and textures “to
give the object a presence.”
In one of her installations, a series
of handkerchiefs once belonging
to her late grandmother are sus-
pended along a wall. She intention-
ally set up the piece where a natu-
ral draft would cause the hand-
kerchiefs to flutter “regardless of
whether someone walked by them
or not.
“It’s really neat to think these
objects have a history and memo-
ries attached to them,” she said.
“I also bet my grandmother
would never had imagined her
handkerchiefs would be exhibited
in an art gallery one day.”
Heffernan’s work carries an envi-
ronmental warning.
Her inspiration came from a ref-
erence to Peter Ward’s book, Under

New partnership

PICKERING -- Local students can
strike a balance between studying reg-
ular school subjects and training for a
career in dance.
And they can begin the process at
auditions next Friday.

fessional dance career can attend the
Pickering school during the day and
take dance training in the afternoon
and evening.
The program is limited to 15 to
20 students and a strong ballet back-
ground is recommended.
Auditions for the program are July

Local artist forms group
DURHAM -- Pickering artist and art teach-
er Judith Jewer often paints outside, plein
air, capturing fleeting scenes in Ajax and
Pickering.
She has formed a new group, Ajax
Pickering Plein Air Painters, which she
describes in a press release as “an infor-
mal group for people who would like to
paint or draw outside in nature with some
friends.
“This is the place where we can discuss
plans for field trips to go and make some
art,” she says.
“Everyone is welcome to come. I’m
thinking it would be fun to have a picnic
lunch and then spend the afternoon paint-
ing, drawing, or taking photos -- whatever
you like. Make sure you come with all the
stuff you need for an afternoon outside.
I have chosen locations where there are
public washrooms.”
The group won’t meet if it’s raining and
Jewer says there won’t be any teaching or
demonstrations at any of the sessions.
The group is planning several “paintouts”
this summer, all from noon to 3 p.m. as
follows:
• July 22 -- Lynde Shores Conservation
Area, Whitby;
• July 29 -- Millennium Square, Pickering
(Liverpool Road at the waterfront);
• Aug. 5 -- Greenwood Conservation
Area, Ajax/Pickering;
• Aug. 12 -- Heydenshore Kiwanis Park,
Whitby (South Blair Street at the water-
front);
• Aug. 19 -- Morningside Park, east
Toronto (Morningside Avenue and Elles-
mere Road); and,
• Aug. 26 -- Carruthers Creek Pavilion,
Ajax (Audley Road South and Ashbury
Boulevard).
Jewer notes she won’t be at the July 22,
29 and Aug. 19 paintouts.

CD RELEASE NIGHT
Durham band releases
CD in Oshawa Saturday
Living the dream
DURHAM -- An Ajax resident literally made
his dream come true.
And you can listen to how it turned out as
local band Bannister White releases its debut
CD July 17 in Oshawa.
“Several years ago Randall Johnson Chung
had a dream that he was on stage with a suc-
cessful rock band whose name was Bannis-
ter White,” states a press release. “Because
the dream was so vivid, he vowed to one day
put together a band called Bannister White
and follow that dream. Johnson Chung...
became aware of a growing interest in ’80s
rock amongst the younger generation. Seem-
ing like a good time to assemble Bannister
White, he called upon the talents of musi-
cians he has worked with in the past.”
The result is an 11-song CD of ’80s-influ-
enced original tunes featuring Johnson
Chung, who grew up in Whitby, Lancaster,
originally from Oshawa, and another Dur-
ham resident, Ed Watson. The bassist on the
CD is Whitby native Rahlen Sullaphen, but
the live band will include bassist and Whitby
resident Michael Cybulskie (Big Mikey C).
The show is at 10 p.m. at Park Place Sports
Bar and Grill, 799 Park Rd. S., Oshawa. There
is no cover charge.
Check out the band at www.myspace.com/
bannisterwhite.
Heffernan’s focus in show
is on ‘the transcience of
human life on earth’
a Green Sky: the Mass Extinctions of the Past,
and What They Can Tell Us About Our Future,
by Gwynne Dyer. Dyer presents various grim
environmental scenarios for the future, one of
which is the disruption of the cyclical move-
ment of water in the world’s oceans because
they are too warm. The result is less oxygen-
ated water, fatal to most creatures, but ideal
conditions for a bacterium that produces
toxic hydrogen sulfide, which appears purple
and green.
Heffernan’s acrylic works in the exhibition
are “all purple with blobs of green” to illus-
trate the bacteria, a warning that we might
again be approaching a mass extinction of
life on the planet, including our own.
“The transience of human life on earth is I
guess how I fit in (to the exhibition’s theme),”
she said.
One piece, In Search of Possibilities:
The green economy, shows murky figures,
prompting one to wonder, ‘will they and peo-
ple in general survive’?
“That’s the question,” Heffernan said.
“They’re kind of wandering. They don’t know
enough to run to higher ground.”
A page from the Income Tax Act appears
in the work, reflecting the common belief
that governments will work in their people’s
interests and eventually address the problem
before it’s too late.

BRAD KELLY

PICKERING -- If one of the goals
of the Pickering Swim Club is to
advance its members to a higher
level, check that off the list.
In fact, use three check marks.
Jose Baylon, Ainsley Corkum
and Carolanne Landry will be
leaving their comfortable sur-
roundings at the club and ven-
turing into new waters as all
three will be swimming at the
university level beginning in the
fall.
Baylon, a Pickering resident
who graduated from St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School, will
be diving into the pool at the
University of Ottawa for the next
five years, while at the same
time studying history and politi-
cal science. It was the positive
vibe he felt while on a visit to the
nation’s capital that swayed him
to enroll at Ottawa.
“When I went there I had a
good feel from the team,” he
says. “I felt like I was a part of it
even though I was just a recruit.
They really know how to show
their people around.
“I want to be able to be with
people I can relate to for four
or five years. That was how I felt
with them.”
A member of the Pickering club
the past five years after switch-
ing from Scarborough, Baylon’s
specialty is the 200m breastroke.
He envisions his time in the
pool and classroom in Ottawa as
a great opportunity.
“I want to go there to have
fun,” he says. “I know it’s going
to keep me disciplined to be in
school and swimming because I
have a set schedule. I have to get
my work done and go to practice
and not have too many distrac-
tions.”
Corkum will be heading the
other way geographically speak-
ing, opting to join the Mus-
tangs program at the University
of Western Ontario in London.
Moving off to university is the
end result of a lot of work over
the past nine years that she has
been a member of the Pickering
club.
The 18 year old from Ajax
chose Western because she was
impressed with the school and
its location.
“It’s a great school and the
city is great,” says the Denis
O’Connor graduate, adding that
previous members of the club
are members of the Western
team and, “They’ve had nothing
but good things to say about it. I
really like the coach and I think I
will fit in with the team well.”
She is looking forward to the
higher level of competition that
the university will offer, espe-
cially in her specialty, the 200m
backstroke, and the challenge
that her studies will present.
“Swimming-wise I hope to
make nationals and improve.
Academically, I’m going into
kinesiology and I’d like to come
out with a (bachelor of science
degree). I just want to do good.”
Landry will be brushing up
on her French when she walks
through the doors of the Univer-
sité Laval Rouge et Or in Sainte-
Foy, Quebec. The language bar-
rier won’t be an issue for the
Ajax resident, who is fully bilin-
gual, having lived in Montreal
until the age of nine.
“Laval was really where I
wanted to go because they have
a great swimming program and
great academics as well,” she
says of her choice. “The balance
between the two is what I want-
ed.”
The graduate of Ajax High
School has some lofty goals,
hoping to make nationals and
cop rookie of the year honours
as a freshman. She’s a sprinter,
specializing in the backstroke
and freestyle.
While excited about the oppor-
tunities ahead, there are some
things she will miss.
“Definitely the people, my par-
ents, this place. This is a great
team and everybody is awe-
some,” she says.
Another of the club’s members,
Kyle Koerth, will be off to Water-
loo in hopes of making the swim
team when tryouts are held.
The 18 year old from Pickering
will be studying systems design

BASKETBALL
Smith, Wilson to play in all-star shootout
TORONTO -- Ajax’s Eric
Smith is set to take part in
the fifth annual All-Star
Charity Shootout (ASCS)
on Saturday, hosted by York
University.
Smith, a standout forward
with the Durham Lords
men’s basketball team, will
be joined by some of Can-
ada’s best men’s basketball
players as well as Canadi-
an Football League legend
Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons
as they raise money in sup-
port of two worthy charities
in War Child Canada and
the Michael ‘Pinball’ Clem-
ons Foundation.
Pickering’s Jovain Wilson,
the 2009-10 OCAA player of
the year from Fleming Col-
lege, has also earned an
invite to the game and will
be on the opposite side of
Smith, representing Clem-
ons’ team, coached by Uni-
versity of Toronto coach
Mike Katz.
The event is set to kick off
at 3:30 p.m.
Smith will represent team
War Child coached by Bob
Bain of York University.
Smith is coming off an
excellent sophomore sea-
son with the Lords as he
led the OCAA with 188
rebounds and also finished
the year averaging 19.2
points per game, the sev-
enth highest total in Dur-
ham College history.
Wilson, meanwhile, had
a magnificent year at Flem-
ing, as evidenced by his
OCAA player of the year
honour. The former Dun-
barton High School play-
er is coming off a year of
nearly 23 points per game,
along with averages of 8.9
rebounds and 1.7 steals for
the Knights.
Smith and Wilson are the
only two college players
named to play in the game.
Meanwhile, the winning
team’s charity will receive
60 per cent of the proceeds
with the remaining 40 per
cent directed to the other
charity.
Tickets are still available
at $25 for adults, $20 for
students (with valid iden-
tification) and $10 for chil-
dren aged seven to 15 with
those under seven receiv-
ing free admission.

PICKERINGADVERTISING FEATUREFocus on Business: Small Cost, Big Results!
During these tough economic times,
businesses need an affordable way to advertise
their products and services and
create a name for themselves in the
community.
The Focus on Business
advertising feature was designed
to help businesses succeed at an
affordable price. The feature
has five zones: Ajax, Pickering,
Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington,
and advertisers can choose to run
in any number of them. If they want
to target a specific area, they can
choose one zone or if they want
broad coverage they can choose to
run in all five.
Advertising packages are
available for six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and
52 weeks, and discounted rates are available for
longer-term commitments.
“I have nothing but good things to say
about the Focus on Business feature,” says Wayne
Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows and
Doors, who has been advertising in the feature
for 15 years.
Having an ad in the newspaper every
week helps businesses build recognition. Readers
who see the advertisement on a regular basis
become familiar with the business. Running in
the section long term shows potential customers
that the business is consistent and is there for the
long term.
“I have been advertising for
15 years,” says Tom Susac, owner of
Sports Station in Oshawa. “I have
people tell me not to worry about
giving them my number, because they
see me in the paper every week.”
The feature includes a 3” wide
by 1.5” deep ad, but the best part is
the free editorial that comes with each
six week run.
“The editorials are very
powerful and are able to explain
things better than you can in an ad,”
says Tom.
The articles will talk in-depth
about the business and can include a photograph
or image. Many advertisers find that the articles
provide a surge in phone calls and sales. The
articles allow readers to learn more about the
businesses, including detailed information about
the products and services they offer.
The Focus on Business advertising feature
is great investment for businesses.
Many advertisers have seen a dramatic
increase in their bottom line because of advertising
in the section.
“I figure that I spend about $5,000
annually on advertising in Focus on Business, and
it definitely brings that back tenfold,” says Tom.
Spaces are currently available in all five
zones. Call today to book your space!

Business feature or to book an ad, please call
