PICKERING -- In the 1970s, resources for fam-
ilies raising a child with Down syndrome were
few and far between.
Walter Heeney and his wife Catherine didn’t
know exactly what life would have in store for
them, and especially for their baby girl, Jan,
when they learned she had Down syndrome.
“Thirty-five years later, it’s the best thing
that’s ever happened,” Mr. Heeney said.
Mr. Heeney is now president of the Durham
Down Syndrome Association and he wants
more people to get involved in the non-prof-
it charitable organization, and utilize the pro-
grams and services it offers.
DDSA offers a number of resources and pro-

like parties, teen dances, family picnics, swim
parties, monthly meetings, newsletters, and

Overwhelming number
of abandoned cats
PARVANEH PESSIAN
ppessian@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- The Humane Society of Dur-
ham Region is once again overflowing with
cats due to a “heartbreaking” increase in
the number of abandoned animals over
the past couple of weeks.
“I just got a call from our shelter supervi-
sor and she’s almost in tears because they’re
at their wit’s end,” said shelter manager Ruby
Richards, explaining how numerous cats are
being dumped at their doorstep.
“Almost every time (our staff) go out the
door, they come back with another four or
five cats. It’s getting to the point where they
just can’t figure out what to do with them
anymore.”
The cats, ranging from five months to 10
years old, typically turn up at the shelter after
their owners move out of a house or apart-
ment and leave them behind.
Animal cruelty investigator Debby Hough-
ton said she has received several calls over
the past week from landlords across the
region who discovered cats left behind by
former tenants. One vacant apartment
in Oshawa alone contained six cats.
“There are a whole slew of reasons
why they do it, whether it’s due to
finances or they just simply decide
they don’t want to look after
them anymore,” Ms. Hough-
ton said.
Some of the animals had
been left for as long as two
weeks and because they
are considered in distress,
shelter staff has no choice
but to bring them into
care, she added.
“It is a criminal offence
to leave an animal in distress without food or
water.”
The humane society’s temporary build-
ing in Oshawa was designed to house 65 cats
but the actual number is about 110 cats with
more coming in every day.
“We just don’t even have cage space to put
all the cats so, right now, the ones that we feel
can get along with other animals are kind
of just roaming in the shelter,” Ms. Richards
said. “It’s a crisis in Durham right now, the
number of cats that are unwanted -- whether
they’re abandoned or dumped on the side of
the road -- and it’s just heartbreaking.”
Humane society staff is asking for help
from the public to adopt the cats. The tempo-
rary shelter is at 79 Taunton Rd. W. Unit 1 in
Oshawa.

The organization was going to amalgamate with the
Down Syndrome Association of Peterborough, but
the new president has learned there are enough
resources to keep DDSA alive and independent.
“I think what we can do here is we can revitalize
the association, get some programs going, pay for
some things, get people active,” Mr. Heeney said.
But there is a gap in the people who utilize the ser-
vice. There seems to be few parents with children
born in the past 10 years using DDSA.
Strange, especially considering around one in
every 800 babies born has Down syndrome, accord-
ing to Mr. Heeney.
“They’re the group we’re trying to get,” he said.
The group has met at Iroquois Park in Whitby and
is already planning a number of activities, such as a
pottery weekend in Pickering and a bowling camp in
Oshawa, both in August.
“They’re not youngsters, they’re not children, they
just need things to do,” he said.
According to the Canadian Down Syndrome Soci-
ety, people with Down syndrome are now living
beyond 55, completing high school, are getting bet-
ter job skills and gaining meaningful employment.
Too often, the website said, it’s low expectations that
yield low performance.
“Children with special needs do a whole bunch of
things,” Mr. Heeney said.
His daughter, for example, does gymnastics, and
everyday activities such as hanging out with fam-
ily and friends, watching television, going to movies
and works at the library at Our Lady of the Bay Cath-
olic School. Jan does this on a volunteer basis, but
others get paid and work independently, or work
with a coach, Mr. Heeney said.
Pickering resident Ashley Ferguson, for example,
holds a paying job at Wendy’s in Pickering.
Others, Mr. Heeney said, participate in different
types of sports, and often participate in the Special
Olympics.
It’s time parents get their children involved in
activities, and prepare them to enter the work world,
rather than just giving the children pity parties, he
said.
“Let’s get them doing something,” he said.
DDSA has organized a two-day bowling camp fea-
turing Special Olympics athletes in Oshawa on Aug.
9 and 10, and registration is now open. The cost is
$20 to register.
A membership costs $20. For meeting dates and
times, payment methods, upcoming events, general
information or to donate visit the website or call Mr.
Heeney.

A few good families needed to
aid Durham Humane Society
Cats are being abandoned in Durham
at a disturbing rate this summer, forc-
ing the humane society to take extreme
measures in providing care.
The Durham Humane Society -- still
picking up the pieces and preparing for
the future following a devastating fire at
its facility in 2008 -- is asking local resi-
dents to consider adopting some of the
more than 100 felines currently crowd-
ing its temporary headquarters.
Humane society officials are meeting
their obligations for care, but will face an
ongoing, difficult challenge if animals
continue to be abandoned at this rate.
The temporary and crammed humane
society facility comfortably has room for
just 65 cats.
According to officials, cats are being
left behind in apartments when tenants
move; some are left at the side of rural
roads; others are dumped at the door-
step of the humane society.
In short, it’s appalling.
Pet owners who, for myriad reasons,
abandon their pets likely do so with the
belief that they will be cared for by agen-
cies such as the humane society. But if
their actions -- or lack of action -- leaves
an animal in distress they could face
criminal charges.
But there is also a moral obligation
for pet owners to ensure that animals in
their care are provided the basic neces-
sities. As the crisis deepens for staff at
the humane society, we encourage Dur-
ham Region residents to help ease the
pressure and consider adopting one of
the abandoned animals and provide a
loving new home.
Shelter staff can provide knowledge-
able advice on care, information on
the potential adoptee and a supportive
environment for pet owners who have
questions.
By adopting these abandoned ani-
mals, Durham residents will serve a pos-
itive dual purpose: they’ll ease the strain
on the humane society’s existing tempo-
rary facility and provide a home to a cat
that might otherwise face a bleak, insti-
tutional existence.
Furthermore, it will allow humane
society officials to focus on developing
and preparing for its new facility.
It’s heartbreaking to think that domes-
tic animals can be so callously left
behind, and in such large numbers.
Shame on those who abandoned their
pets -- and their responsibilities -- for
the sake of convenience or expediency,
or both.
But Durham Region residents have
answered the call in the past to face the
challenge. We hope more will consid-
er taking action and help provide new
homes and new lives for these otherwise
unwanted pets.
Being a reporter is generally enjoyable,
but every now and then a plum assignment
gets doled out.
Sports reporter Shawn Cayley (@Shawn-
Cayley) got one this week when he head-
ed off to Club Loreley, Oshawa’s German-
Canadian Club, to tweet the agony and
ecstasy of the much-anticipated World Cup
semi-final between Spain and Germany.
While Shawn got to watch the game live,
many of us lived through him vicarious-
ly, simply following on Twitter. With both
North and South American soccer fans on
company time while the big games were
on, many of us had no choice but to follow
the action online.
World Cup-related words and phras-
es trend daily on Twitter. When Italy was
booted, it was Ciao Italia trending; before
the Netherlands’ big game against Brazil it
was Hup Holland Hup.
In fact, if you used the appropriate tag
for your favourite country, such as #ESP
for Spain, a little flag would appear in your
post.
During games, Twitter provided a link to a
dedicated feed of World Cup related tweets
allowing fans to follow along.
The instant nature of Twitter proved so
popular during big games that service was
noticeably slow and the fail whale, denot-
ing that Twitter is down, made frequent
appearances. During Japan’s 3-1 win over
Denmark, Twitter broke a record with 3,283
tweets per second. That broke a record set a
week before during the Lakers-Celtics NBA
final.
And it’s not just fans and journalists tweet-
ing, the players themselves get into the
action. Brazilian superstar Kaka (@RealKa-
ka) has 1.2 million followers and he tweets
in both English and Portuguese. His tweet-
ing slowed while he was playing for his
country, but picked up again after he got
back home. Keeping mum about the birth
of his son until after his team was eliminat-
ed, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristia-
no) took to Twitter and Facebook to make
the big announcement.
Perhaps my favourite social media site
for World Cup content has been YouTube.
The best of World Cup past and present
was posted by fans. Maicon’s physics-defy-
ing goal against North Korea? Online. The
USA’s mystifyingly disallowed goal against
Algeria? Online. Luis Suarez’s infamous
handball against Ghana? Check it out on
YouTube. While you’re at it, why not revis-
it Thierry Henry’s so-called Hand of Frog
which allowed France to beat Ireland in
qualifying or the original, Diego Mara-
dona’s 1986 Hand of God against England.
The most popular 11-second clip of that
has 3.6 million views.
From the same game, check out Mara-
dona’s Goal of the Century where he beats
five English players plus the goalie. And
then when you start watching great goals,
why stop? Highlight reels themed around
players, premier league teams and coun-
tries abound.
This Sunday marks the end of the world’s
best display of the beautiful game, but
before then there’s still time to log on and
join the global party.

Market to be set up
in Scarborough
PICKERING -- Pickering farmers
will sell their food just west of the
city this summer.
A Pickering Farmers’ Market will
not operate this summer, and the
school-based farmers’ markets are
waiting for zoning approval from
the City. So starting July 12, local
farmers will set up shop at the Uni-
versity of Toronto Scarborough
Campus, 41265 Military Trail, to
cater to Scarborough and Pickering
residents, said James Blair, co-
founder of the Durham Culinary
Association.
The association’s goal is to pro-
vide fresh, locally grown food pro-
duced as close to Durham commu-
nities as possible, as well as educat-
ing the urban community about
local food issues.
The market only sells locally
grown produce, and farmers uti-
lizing the market must use as little
fossil fuel as possible for energy,
respect biodiversity on their farm
landscapes and create a safe envi-
ronment for human labourers and
livestock.
The market kicks off on June 12
from 3 to 7:30 p.m. and runs each
Monday until Oct. 25.

Advertising FeatureG&Home,
Grilling is a staple of summertime entertain-
ment, and some people even grill 12 months
a year. As long as grilling has been around,
myths have circulated about this popular
means to preparing a meal. Let’s set the re-
cord straight.
Myth: You have to clean the grill
right after cooking.
Fact: It really doesn’t matter when you clean
the grill, just that it gets cleaned. Many peo-
ple rely on grilled food as a quick method
of cooking. If company is over, it’s perfectly
alright to leave the grill uncleaned. Just do it
the next time you light the fi re. Simply turn
on the heat, let it warm up for about 10 min-
utes to allow the fl ames to burn off any food
particles and loosen up the rest. Then go
over the grates with a wire brush. Remaining
oils from foods help season the metal grat-
ing and fl avor the next round of food.
Myth: Eating grilled food
causes cancer.
Fact: This myth is based on a study in which
rats were fed heavily charred food that was
cooked on a grill. Charred food can contain
benz-pyrenes, which are carcinogenic. How-
ever, the rats were only served the charred
food and in high amounts -- something that
would be unlikely for people to consume.
Eating grilled food as part of a balanced
diet is unlikely to cause cancer. If you are
concerned about benz-pyrenes, grill lean
meats that are less likely to cause fl are-ups
and charring on the foods. Some marinades
can also reduce the amount of charring that
occurs.
Myth: Grilling and barbecuing
are the same thing.
Fact: Actually, they’re not. Grilling cooks
food over high heat for a short duration of
time. Barbecuing uses low, indirect heat to
cook foods, generally all day or even over-
night. Grilling is used for foods that would
dry out if cooked for a long time. Less ex-
pensive, tougher cuts of meat can be barbe-
cued, such as brisket.
Myth: Grills require special cleaning
to prevent bacteria.
Fact: Concern about foodborne illnesses is
very real. Bacteria can lead to stomach dis-
comfort and other symptoms. However, it is
not necessary to sterilize your grill. The high
heat used to cook the food essentially does
that work for you. Allowing your grill to
preheat and cleaning it regularly will be all
the precaution you need to prevent bacteria.
Myth: You need to coat foods in oil
to prevent sticking.
Fact: Generally cleaning your grill and al-
lowing the grating to season will be enough
to prevent sticking of foods. Also, allow
meats to cook thoroughly on one side before
attempting to fl ip to avoid sticking. If stick-
ing is still a problem, a light coating of cook-
ing oil or nonstick spray applied to the grill
grates can help.

Free event celebrates Durham’s diverse
nature with music, food, sports
MIKE RUTA
mruta@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- The first Durham
International Festival takes
flight next weekend in Oshawa.
Co-directed by Ajax celeb-
rity Farley Flex, the event is
designed to bring Durham’s
various cultural communities
together. It will showcase and
celebrate the many cultures
that have found a home in
Durham through four key pillars:
arts and crafts, food and beverage,
music and dance, and sports
and recreation.
The Durham Internation-
al Festival is July 16 to 18 at
Lakeview Park, at the foot of
Simcoe Street on the Lake
Ontario waterfront.
“We’re not a melting pot
like the States, we’re more of
a mosaic,” Flex says.
“The festival is about geo-
graphic and ethnocultural
inclusion.”
While the event is in
Oshawa, with Mayor John
Gray slated to open the festi-
val and welcome visitors at 4
p.m. on July 16, Flex stresses
that the festival is for everyone
in Durham Region, from Brock
to Pickering and Clarington.
“Lakeview Park and Oshawa are
the host community, but this is a
Durham initiative,” he says.
Flex and co-director Jon Sarpong plan to have
the festival in Durham every year. How it takes shape remains to
be seen. Flex says the options include moving the event to anoth-
er park next year or having it remain at Lakeview Park, with events
also occurring at other spots in the region.
An advisory board is in place and still evolving. Flex says Pickering
resident Shashi Bhatia, chairwoman of the Indo-Canadian Cultural
Association of Durham, is a member and the Community Develop-
ment Council of Durham is an event partner.
The festival is, in a sense, Flex’s answer to a question he posed to
himself after arriving in Ajax from Scarborough 14 years ago
and experiencing the “evolving” demographics of Dur-
ham Region: ‘how are newcomers wel-
comed to Durham Region?’
As for the four pillars, Flex says “all
of these elements unto themselves are
amazing identifiers of culture and heri-
tage.”
In addition to cultural performanc-
es, food and a marketplace, the festival
features cricket and soccer matches.
Each evening at 7 p.m. there’s a themed
concert: R and B/hip hop on July 16, rock/
pop on July 17 and reggae/soca/world beat
on the final day of the festival, July 18.
Recording artist Najjah Calibur, also from
Ajax, is among the performers taking the
stage for the July 16 concert. He quit a prom-
ising soccer career for music and says rock,
reggae, funk, blues and hip hop are all
influences.
“My music is feel good
music,” he says. “I’m always
the guy who’s trying to pick
you up when you’re down.
I’m a very positive person;
I’m a high-spirited guy.”
See for yourself by check-
ing out his video, Ups
and Downs, on You-
Tube. A new single,
So Far (It’s Been a
Pleasure) is slated for
an August release,
with an album to fol-
low.
A former mem-
ber of Blues Under-
dog, Calibur opened
for Black Eyed Peas
across Canada and
has played virtually
every major music festival in the country.
He also has a radio show, Najjah’s World, on www.indielove.ca
Thursdays at 9 p.m.
Flex says it would be “exclusionary” to charge admission to the
festival, so everything, with the exception of food and marketplace
items, is free. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • July 9, 201019

AJAX -- Dakota Whyte will
be travelling the world this
summer with Canada’s
national basketball pro-
grams. The Ajax resi-
dent will visit Spain
and Singapore, with
a chance to also
play in France.
KITCHENER -- A chance to move out of
the basement of the Major Series Lacrosse
league standings eluded the Ajax-
Pickering Rock on Tuesday night.
Travelling to the Waterloo Rec Com-
plex to face the Kitchener-Waterloo
Kodiaks, the Rock couldn’t muster
any offence in the third period as a
5-5 tie through two periods resulted
in an 8-5 loss. The home side scored
three unanswered goals in the final
20 minutes.
The Rock trailed the entire night,
but also battled back to stay close.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first period,
the Rock squared things at two all, only
to fall back 5-2 in the second, resulting in
another comeback to bring the score to a 5-
5 tie before the end of the period.
Jonas Derks, Bryan Johnson, Kiel Dona-
hue, Bill McLean and Jason Mainer had the
goals for the Rock, who fell to 2-9-0 on the
season.
The next couple of outings for the Rock
will prove tough with a home-and-home
against Peterborough scheduled for Thurs-
day (after our deadline) in Peterborough
and back in Ajax Friday at 8 p.m.
BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- With school out and summer holi-
days greeting students, Dakota Whyte won’t
be spending her time the traditional way,
sitting on a dock at a cottage.
Instead, the Ajax resident will be trav-
elling the world, with Spain and Singa-
pore definite destinations, and a jaunt over
to France also a possibility. It’s all part of
being named to the Cadette Women’s
National Team as well as Canada’s
first ever 3-on-3 basketball squad.
It will be a hectic couple of
months, but Whyte isn’t com-
plaining at all. In fact, she
wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I feel really blessed that I
got this opportunity at such a
young age,” she said from Mis-
sissauga earlier this week while
attending a training camp before
heading out to Spain on Wednes-
day. “I just want to make the best
out of it and do the best I can for
Canada. I’m hoping this is just
the beginning of me playing
national level basketball.
“I hope that I keep with it and
make more teams.”
The 15 year old was one of 28
players from across the coun-
try to attend a tryout in hopes
of cracking the Canadian ros-
ter that will compete at the
inaugural FIBA U17 World
Championship in France.
The camp was also used to
determine the four players
to comprise Canada’s first
ever 3-on-3 squad that will be entered in the FIBA com-
petition at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
The competition to garner spots on the teams was
fierce, says Whyte, who was fortunate enough to make
both teams.
“Usually I’m used to being one of the best players on
the team. I can just fly through things,” she says. “But
this is different because you are going against the top
point guards and you don’t want to mess up. You want
to do good every single time you are out there. You have
to work extra hard.”
Whyte is an alternate on the world championship team
that is in Spain to play an exhibition tournament against
the host country, the United States and Australia. If a
rostered player currently out with a wrist injury returns
to the roster, Whyte will return home; if not, she will
accompany the team to France for the world champi-
onships from July 16-25. Canada opens the tournament
on July 16 against Turkey. Other countries in their pool
include France, Japan, Russia and the United States.
The tournament features the best players 17 and
younger from 12 countries around the world.
While that trip hasn’t been confirmed as yet, the stu-
dent at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School will
be off to Singapore in August for the inaugural Youth
Olympic Games for the 3-on-3 tournament. Running
from Aug. 14-25, Canada has been placed in a pool with
Korea, Vanuatu, Ivory Coast and Russia.
While exciting, there is also a little trepidation on
Whyte’s part with being away so much this summer.
“I’ve had a couple of breakdowns missing family,” she
says of the work leading up to making the teams. “It’s
a long process. There’s lots of practices, with no breaks.
But, it’s what I have to go through.”
The experience is going to be an invaluable one for
Whyte, who knows it will make her a better player in the
future, and hopefully lead her to a scholarship in the
United States that she covets after high school gradua-
tion in a couple of years.
“I’m hoping this experience will bring my basketball
IQ and everything to the next level for when I get back to
high school and club season,” she says.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • July 9, 201021

PICKERING -- The Pickering
Red Sox major bantams made
the trip to Niagara Falls a worth-
while one, winning the Greater
Niagara Baseball Association
tournament championship with
a convincing victory in the final
game.
Pickering came out of round
robin play with a 2-1 record and,
as the two seed, knocked off the
previously unbeaten hometown
Niagara Falls Falcons 8-1 in the
crossover semifinal.
In the tournament final, the
Red Sox defeated their Eastern
Ontario Baseball Association
archrival Whitby Red team by a
10-2 score.
The team played very solid
defensively throughout the tour-
nament, allowing only four runs
in the last three games.
“Every single one of our play-
ers contributed, making it a true
team tournament champion-
ship,” said Pickering head coach
Mike Sagat.
Sagat, a Niagara Falls native,
found it particularly sweet to
see the boys win their GNBA tro-
phies. It brought back memories
from his last GNBA trophy as a
player at Oakes Park in 1975.
The team members are coach
Glen Shaw, Ryan Sattz, Steven
Conely, Matthew Shaw, Kadeev
Bembridge, Justin Gideon,
Rosario DiPietro, Brent Wishart,
coach Steven Sattz, David Sagat,
Jamie Morrow, Steven Wishart,
Tommy-Lee McDonald, Andrew

June 14, 1953 - July 13, 2009
It's been one year now without me
Since I am not there to see
When the sun will rise and fi nd your eyes
Still fi lled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did that day
While thinking of the many things
We didn't get to say.
I know how much you all loved me
As much as I loved all of you
And all the times your thinking of me
You'll know I'm missing you too.
So when the next year starts without me
Don't think we're far apart
For every time you think of me
I'm right here in your heart.
Forever in all our hearts

Ten years have passed
since God called you home
You did not go alone
For part of us went with you
You left us beautiful memories
Your love is still our guide
And though we cannot see you
You are always in our hearts
Our family chain is broken
And nothing seems the same
But as God calls us one by one
The chain will link again.

LeGROS, William - It is with profound sad-
ness that the family announces the passing
of William (Bill) Edward LeGros on July 6th,
2010 in his 85th year. It seems impossible to
condense in a few short sentences the life of
a brother, husband, father, grandfather, edu-
cator, businessman, politician and friend; all
who knew him feel crushed by the loss of this
kind, generous man. Bill served in WWII dur-
ing the liberation of the Netherlands as a
member of the Saskatchewan Light Infantry.
There, he formed lifelong bonds with the
country and its people. Following his military
service, Bill relocated to Ajax and became a
sincere supporter of his town and community.
He made tremendous contributions in many
ways, including as Mayor of Ajax, President
of the Kinsmen, and lifetime member of the
Whitby curling club. Bill was a fi erce believer
in the importance of education. He played a
signifi cant role in the lives of many students,
staff and parents as an exceptional teacher
and principal. Bill was also a dedicated family
man. Very proud of his family and their
accomplishments, he never bragged about
them; except his grandchildren - it was a
mutual admiration society. Always an avid
card player, Bill renewed his enthusiasm for
Bridge during winter sojourns in Mexico. He
delighted in a well-played game. A consum-
mate risk taker, his exploits were a source of
constant amusement for all who knew him.
He was a catalyst for good things, and we
have much to be thankful for in being a part
of Bill LeGros' life. Contributions in Bill's
memory can be made to the Salvation Army.

It’s finally summer,
and while you may have long
forgotten about snow, slush
and salt, your vehicle certainly
hasn’t! While salt is great for
melting ice and making roads
safer during the winter months,
it can wreak havoc on your vehicle if it’s not
removed.
In addition to causing rust on the exterior,
it can also damage the interior. Salt stains hurt
the carpeting and upholstery, discolouring it and
breaking down the fibres, causing it to wear away.
Having the interior of your vehicle shampooed by
Diamond Shine can prevent this and keep your
vehicle looking new! A professional cleaning will
also eliminate odours and bacteria. Whether you
have pets in your vehicle or are trekking sand
(and sand bugs) inside from a day at the beach,
your vehicle may be full of all kinds of bacteria.
Keep your kids healthy by bringing your vehicle
into Diamond Shine for a full detailing!
The staff at Diamond
Shine hope you had a
fantastic Canada Day,
and to help you keep
the celebration going,
Diamond Shine is offering
all of their customers a
great deal! For the month of July only,
customers who bring in this article will
receive a free engine shampoo (a $45
value!) with any interior shampoo!
Don’t forget your vehicle’s exterior! Bring
your vehicle in for an exterior waxing and buffing
to protect it from the elements and keep it shining
all summer long!
Diamond Shine offers a package that
fits every budget, from a hand wash starting at
just $19.95 to complete detailing. The vehicle is
hand washed, using high quality soap, and hand
dried with a chamois to achieve a brilliant shine.
The difference can be seen in the details!
To avoid disappointment, make sure you
call to book your appointment today!
“We want to thank everyone for putting
their trust in us for the past 15 years, including

Senior Dolphins win second game in a row
DURHAM -- The Ajax-
Pickering Dolphins Senior
Varsity team improved its
record to 2-4-0 for the sea-
son with its second win in a
row, this time over the Brant-
ford Bisons. After a tough
start against the league’s top
teams the Dolphins are get-
ting on a roll.
The Brantford game was a
close battle with the Bisons
opening the score after a
long initial drive that ate up
over eight minutes in the first
quarter to go up 7-0. That
was all it took to wake up
the Dolphins, led by quar-
terback Mike Stobbart and
a running back combina-
tion of Marley Patterson and
Myles Daly. The ’Phins kept
it on the ground with a quick
response TD by Patterson,
one of three he would have
on the day, to even up the
score.
Brantford, although not
big in the depth chart, was
not giving up and responded
early in the second quarter
with a field goal to go back
up 10-7. Again, the combina-
tion of Stobbart to Patterson
worked and the ’Phins were
up 14-10 and not looking
back.
The Bisons tried to bat-
tle back, but a missed field
goal and 110-yard return by
Jordan Oram was the nail
that the ’Phins were look-
ing for and quickly started to
run up the points. Patterson
would go for his third of the
day, capping off a 225-yard
rushing game for him to end
the half with the score 28-10
Dolphins.
Defensively, Pickering
played a strong game led by
Shane Lock, Jordan Oram,
Jason Harrison and a defen-
sive line that pressured
Brantford all day into mak-
ing mistakes and not giving
up yards or opportunities to
score after the first quarter.
The second half started
off with Andrew Downer at
quarterback and he quickly
got the team going with a 35-
yard pass to Michael Rob-
son for another major, fol-
lowed up by a field goal by
Mark Mickalicka who was
six for six on extra points
plus the three-pointer to cap
off a great day. Throughout
the second half, the defence
prevented the Bisons from
getting any yardage and the
’Phins mixed it up with a
combination of passing and
running and QB changes
that kept the opposition on
its heels. A late TD by run-
ning back Brian Derkson
capped off the scoring to give
the Dolphins a 47-10 victory.
