MacPherson Transfer Limited (formerly known as U-PAK Disposals) plans to triple its volume of waste capacity at its Pickering transfer station from a high of 299 tonnes of waste received per day to 1,000 per day. It’s also applied to store 600 tonnes on site at any given time, compared to the 299 allowed now. The MacPherson Court site -- off Brock Road south of Bayly Street -- is already con- troversial, having received no council sup- port in 2006 for its original application to open, but the Ministry of the Environment granted the certificate of approval in May 2007. He does show confidence in the school board, saying it could live up to the challenge of a provincial bill which makes all Ontario school boards more accountable for student achievement. Although the answer was that it would be more expen- sive, it shows he’s actually reading and thinking about the staff reports presented to trustees. It would be nice to see more of those comments and questions coming from him. B+B+ As board chairman, he runs a smooth meeting. Trustee McCafferty is knowledgeable on issues that impact Pickering and Durham. The bridge over the creek that runs through Miller Creek Community Park at Magill Drive and Westney Road was packed with onlookers as a towing com- pany tried to extract the blue SUV from the water. Resident Jessica Miller was coming out of the McLean Community Centre when two little girls ran up to her to say they’d seen a car go into the creek. Ms. Miller quickly called police and was amazed at how quickly they arrived. “It didn’t even feel like it was a minute,” she said. She then went toward the creek to see if the driver was all right. “I could see she was OK in the SUV,” she said. Police say the driver told them she was making a turn when she lost control of the car and it plunged into the water. The woman was hesitant to get out of the vehicle as she was unsure just how deep water in the creek was. Firefighters arrived and helped the woman out of the car. When the News Advertiser was on scene, the young woman was giving her state- ment to police at the side of the road and appeared shaken up, but not injured. She declined comment. It has not been determined if charges will be laid. SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND AJAX -- Firefighters attached ropes to an SUV that ended up in the creek at Miller Creek Community Park June 22. The driver, who was unharmed, told police she lost control of the vehicle. POLICE SUV plunges into Ajax creek Local boy keeps the beat for bikers, locals at Big M Burgers BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It was the perfect evening to drum up funds for a good cause at a local burger joint recently. Members of local motorcycle organi- zations gathered to support the Cana- dian Cancer Society at Big M Burgers at Liverpool Road and Krosno Boulevard in Pickering as Darius Parsons held his Drumming for a Cure fundraiser. The bikers from the All Canadian Rid- ers Club hold weekly rallies at the pop- ular restaurant that’s served burgers, onion rings, fries, milkshakes and more for decades. The club also raises money for Variety Village through 50/50 draws and raffle tickets. “That’s our charity of choice,” said founder of the club, Rick ‘Crash’ Eggett, who added about 60 or 70 bikes come out for the meetings at Big M each week. But he was happy to change causes for an evening to support the enthusiastic drummer. “We made him an honourary member,” Mr. Eggett said. “He’s a good kid.” Last year, Darius, then seven, approached owner Chris Papatheodor- ou and asked if he could drum at a biker night to raise money for cancer. “My grandma and grandad both died from cancer and I don’t want any more people to die from cancer,” he wrote in a pamphlet he and supportive friends and family handed out to the crowd last year. Mr. Papatheodorou was so impressed with Darius’s enthusiasm that he decid- ed to give him a shot, and Darius start- ed his fundraiser. The young drummer played a set of classic rock tunes, such as Born to Be Wild, and was cheered on for an encore, much to his delight. And he drew out a large crowd last Thurs- day once again, playing more classics, including Don’t Stop Believing, Rock and Roll All Night and Raise A Little Hell. Before the event began, Darius had raised $3,102.48 thanks to Big M’s sup- port, and the coins and bills kept pour- ing in throughout the night. “We’re very proud of him for raising all the money that he does,” said his moth- er, Nikki Parsons. Mr. Papatheodorou’s father opened the restaurant in 1965 and supported a number of organizations, such as local hockey teams, and gave each young hockey player a free milkshake. His son is more than happy to carry on the tradi- tion of giving to the community in which he was born and raised. Along with from bikers and locals who frequent the burger joint were loyal cus- tomers from Pickering Fire Services. Platoon Chief Rick Ingram reminisced about the good old days when he was a teenager and would go back to the Big M after a late night out at the nearby drive- in. “Everybody went here,” said Mr. Ingram. “It was a real friendly spot when you walked in.” His usual order was onion rings and steak-on-a-bun, and it remains a favou- rite. And he was very impressed with the event’s entertainment. “He’s really good,” he said. Darius hopes to raise another $3,000 for his cause again this year. When the biggest concern in 2006 was the type of waste the station would handle, the company was granted the certificate for solid non-haz- ardous commercial and industrial waste only, with a specific provision prohibiting organic material, according to City staff. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean said the proposal “slaps me in the face.” In a 2006 letter president Tim O’Connor Sr. sent to the City and councillors, he wrote “we confirm that organic or resi- dential waste will not be handled at this site.” Since buildings have gone up, but work on the site hasn’t started, councillors are questioning if MacPherson planned to include organics all along. “It seems to be unfolding as fears sug- gested it might unfold,” said Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson. Mr. O’Connor said in an interview that’s not true. “That’s the business we’re in and we wanted to expand it,” he said. “That’s our prerogative.” Rick Duval, president of nearby busi- ness CSM Limited and president of the local Durham Condominium Corporation chapter, was shocked to learn of the plans, having “fought this as much as we could” in 2006. “First of all, it shouldn’t be around here because it’s going to negatively impact these businesses,” he said, adding all types of businesses are in the area. The traffic, he said, will be a nightmare with the 231 trucks per day the increase will bring. “That’s one truck every two minutes based on an eight-hour day,” he said. MacPherson Court is a no-exit road that runs off Brock Road, and there’s no dedi- cated left-turn lane for southbound traffic at MacPherson, which staff and Mr. Duval fear will negatively impact local business- es. The smell from organics will also be ter- rible, Mr. Duval said, and the resale value on the nearby properties will plummet as a result. “We’re already struggling and to have our unit value dropping by a large per- centage is cutting into our retirement,” he said. Staff said although the area is zoned heavy industrial, the increase in waste sources, potential odour issues and traf- fic means the proposal is too large in scale for the location, issues the MOE should consider. “They shouldn’t have zoned it that way if they wanted condominiums or some- thing there,” responded Mr. O’Connor. Staff found a number of issues, including odour controls in the application being reactionary only. One example is the use of a portable sprayer to dispense an odour neutralizer on smelly loads. MOE spokesperson Kate Jordan said staff is currently considering the applica- tion and approval will be based on a num- ber of elements, such as odour controls. “We have to look at that extensively,” she said, adding if approved, it will contain conditions to mitigate any odours. Mr. Duval found the lack of communica- tion unacceptable; he didn’t learn of the application until June 21. “We’re very angry. We didn’t receive any information from the ministry, we’re angry we didn’t receive notice from the (City) since it had (knowledge of the plans) since May 25,” he said. Coun. McLean didn’t know about the application until June 18 himself, and while he would have notified the busi- nesses himself, he said “It’s the City’s responsibility to comment.” Ms. Jordan explained in the certificate amendment process, the MOE doesn’t send out a letter to stakeholders, but the information is put on the publicly-acces- sible Environmental Bill of Rights Reg- istry. Although the 30-day formal public consultation period ended June 9, Ms. Jordan said the ministry will still consider public comments, which can be made on the website. At the June 21 meeting, council in a recorded vote disagreed with the pro- posal, and asked that a strong letter citing opposition and concerns be sent to the ministry and local MPPs. “All public comments from municipali- ties and stakeholders are considered as part of the review,” Ms. Jordan said. Mr. Duval feels the City has a responsibil- ity to protect its taxpayers, as it did when the City launched legal action against York Region for its sewer pipe expansion. “Part of me says ‘Why isn’t our City real- ly going to bat, not just sending stern let- ters?’” he said. City comments are due by June 28. And yet the good news is that most of youth rank “playing sports” very high in terms of interest and enjoyment. So why is it that inactivity among Canadian children continues to rise? One reason might be that television, computers, and video games are right there at their fi ngertips – and the temptation may be even worse in summertime, when kids have so much time on their hands. “Children need to learn a love for exercise at a young age to make their hearts strong and to prevent the many diseases associated with obesity,” says Dr. Doug Tkachuk at Lifelabs, a leading diagnostic test centre. “Diabetes, particularly in children, is on the rise in North America, but this can be reversed if families become more dedicated to a healthier lifestyle involving food and exercise. The key is to make it fun.” “Aim for at least one hour of physical exercise or activity every day so your child’s muscles and bones develop properly,” the doctor continued. “Motivate them with a daily plan so they look forward to it. Your park visit, for example, might start with playing freely with other children at fi rst, followed by a ball game, badminton, skipping rope, playing tag, or any other kind of heart-pumping fun.” Parents are advised to keep an eye on sedentary behaviour and to nip it in the bud. SUMMER KICKOFF 2010 ~ ADVERTISING FEATURE You can never be too careful with outdoor meals at this time of year. Lots of sunshine and heat can easily turn picnics and barbecues into a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, such as salmonella—and nothing spoils summer fun faster than a dose of food poisoning. “Our testing for gastro-intestinal related illness does increase somewhat during the barbecue season,” says Dr. Doug Tkachuk at LifeLabs, a leading diagnostic test centre. “So we can’t over emphasize how important it is to handle, wash, and prepare food with those cautions in mind.” Here are some LifeLabs food safety tips: • Wash hands often during meal preparation to prevent bacteria from spreading. • When using a cooler, separate raw meat from ready-to-eat foods, including vegetables, to prevent cross- contamination. • Keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Cover hot foods such as steak, chicken or hot dogs in foil to retain heat and eat them right away. • Cold foods should stay chilled at 4° C or below. Promptly refrigerate any food you plan to save for the next day. • Cook your meats, fi sh and poultry thoroughly and use a thermometer to ensure they have reached the proper cooked temperature. Clean the thermometer each time you check. • Use a clean plate when taking food off the grill. Remember not to put cooked food on the same plate that held raw meat. • Melon is a favourite summer fruit but it is at greater risk of contamination due to its netted rind. Be sure to wash the surface thoroughly before cutting.. Do not leave cut melons at room temperature for more than two hours. • Food items prepared with mayonnaise, or those high in protein should be chilled until served and as soon as possible again, after. Don’t let them sit in the direct sunshine. Bacteria multiplies easily in moist foods and warm conditions • Always keep food out of the temperature danger zone of 4° C to 60° C in which bacteria can grow. Do manufacturers of hearing aids own hearing aid clinics? A. There is a recent trend in hearing care for some manufacturers of hearing aids to own hearing aid clinics. These clinics typically sell only hearing aids manufactured by the manufacturer. Q. Is your hearing aid clinic owned by a hearing healthcare professional? A. An audiologist is a member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario. A hearing instrument practitioner is a member of the Association of Hearing Instrument Practitioners of Ontario. A hearing aid clinic owned by an audiologist or hearing instrument practitioner typically offers hearing aids manufactured by more than one manufacturer. Our three hearing aid clinics are owned by an audiologist and hearing instrument practitioner. Q. How will I know if a hearing aid clinic is owned by a health professional? A. . You can ask two questions: • Are you owned by a health professional or a manufacturer of hearing aids? • Do you carry hearing aids manufactured by more than one manufacturer? Q. What is an iQ OtoLens™? A. -Oto- is from the Greek, meaning /ear/. Lens (optics) converg- es (or diverges) light but in this case, iQ OtoLens™ means that it converges sound. The iQ OtoLens™ is the world’s fi rst invis- ible-in-the-canal (IIC) hearing aid. The iQ OtoLens™ is 100% invisible and 100% amazing. A. The Voice iQ is a new noise reduction and speech preservation system that is so fast and smart that it reduces noise between syllables of speech. Voice iQ was devel- oped over three years and uses a two-part algorithm that calculates appropriate gain on a per channel basis. The result is unprecedented sound quality, ease of listening and preservation of speech in noise. In other words, the Voice iQ holds speech volume up and pushes background noise down, meaning you hear more of what you want to hear, like conversations, and less of what you don’t like to hear, like wind and background noise. Q. Do you have to be specially trained to fi t the iQ OtoLens™? A. Yes and our staff have been trained in the “Comfort Fit Process” impression tech- nique. The tiny hearing instruments fi t in the second bend of the ear, meaning that it is truly 100% invisible with minimal occlusion (plugged up sensation). And, there is no annoying or embarassing acoustic feedback (whistling or ringing). Q. What does the /iQ/ stand for? Ask an Audiologist 686-43433 Harwood Ave. S., Ajax, DR. Call us at 905-683-0707 Girls’ 4x400m relay team finishes first BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- It was just a matter of time before Notre Dame Catho- lic Secondary School won its first team gold medal at an OFSAA championship. That time came recently in London on the track at the Uni- versity of Western Ontario, as the girls’ 4x400m open relay team led for much of the race and then used a strong final lap to win gold in a time of 3:50.14. It was another Ajax school, Pickering High School, which battled Notre Dame right down to the finish line, ending in a one-two finish for gold and silver at the provin- cial high school championships. “I was pretty nervous going in because I knew it was a distinct possibility that we could pull it off and we did,” said Nicholas Kolodzie, who coaches the team with Melanie Paplyk. “All four of our girls had to run personal best times in order to win.” The win by the foursome of Chanice and Tynelle Taylor- Chase, Ivana Jaciw-Zurakowsky and Alexis Marsh helped Notre Dame to a second-place overall finish in the points race, ironical- ly just behind Pickering. The trip to the medal podium as part of the relay team made it four for Chanice Taylor-Chase, who collected a medal of each colour individually, finishing first in the senior girls’ 110m hurdles, second in the 200m and third in the long jump. In addi- tion to the coaching she receives at Notre Dame, Taylor-Chase has also hooked up with Anthony McCleary, who is the coach of Olympic bronze medal and world championship silver medal hur- dler Priscilla Lopes-Schliep. “She is very hungry,” said Kolodzie of what makes Taylor- Chase one of the elite athletes in the province at the high school level. “She just wants it so bad. Before she won individual medals, but to have the team win with her made it even more special. She helped bring everyone up. “She wants to go to the Olym- pics and I don’t see any reason why she won’t.” In fact, Kolodzie noted that her time in the relay was a personal best and would have been good enough to race with the boys in the same event. Among the other medal win- ners from the school were Dush- awn Johnson-Powell, who won gold in the midget boys’ high jump, and Marsh, who added to her relay gold with a silver in the midget girls’ 200m. In all, Notre Dame sent 15 ath- letes to OFSAA, seven girls and eight boys.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • June 24, 201025 APSportsBrad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com facebook.com/sportsdurhamregion twitter.com/scnewsdurham HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD First team gold for Notre Dame SUBMITTED PHOTO AJAX -- The girls’ 4x400m relay team of, from left, Chanice Taylor-Chase, Ivana Jaciw-Zurakowsky, Tynelle Taylor-Chase and Alexis Marsh recorded the first team gold-medal victory in the history of the school at the OFSAA provincial championships. HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL St. Mary mercied in OFSAA bronze medal game SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Almost two weeks after it started, the OFSAA boys’ baseball championships have finally been completed. Rain forced the postponement of the tournament’s bronze medal game earlier this month, one that was to be played in Etobicoke. On Monday, Whitby’s Sinclair Celtics staked claim to the third-place fin- ish by knocking off Pickering’s St. Mary Monarchs 11-1 at Oshawa’s Kinsmen Stadium. After a shocking and disappoint- ing loss to St. Anne’s two weeks ago that relegated them to the bronze medal game, Sinclair coach Geoff Whent was pleased with the way his team bounced back, especial- ly in light of the long layoff and the fact his club was missing several key players. Whent added that the mindset his players carry to the field each time out allowed them to emerge with the win. Jordan Hill was on the mound for Sinclair and bounced back nicely from a tough performance against St, Anne’s. He tossed five innings, allowing just the one run and only two hits. On the other side, while disap- pointed to miss out on a top-three finish, St. Mary coach Brian Chen remained proud of his club. “The guys played a great season and it’s unfortunate that the last game they had to lose it,” he said. “They made a few errors in the field, a few plays they’d like to have back, but you know what? Overall it was a great season. They ended up fourth overall in the province. How can you complain about that?” While the offence only mustered a pair of hits off Hill, the Monarchs’ defence struggled as much, if not more. From several wild pitches and passed balls to overthrows at first, St. Mary played themselves out of it early. That was a tough pill to swallow, Chen admitted. “It’s always tough to lose a game like that ... It’s tough to take when you know you can be in it, but you have those games. Unfortunate- ly it was in a game for the Ontario bronze medal,” he said. “These guys have a lot of charac- ter though and they will pick it up for next year and come back and learn from it.” RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND OSHAWA -- St. Mary catcher Jack Lang stretched for the ball as Sinclair’s Juwan Service stretched for the plate during OFSAA bronze medal baseball action at Kinsmen Stadium in Oshawa. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • June 24, 201026 AP Shop by phone 1-800-267-3277 Shop online sears.ca SAVINGS EVENT SEARS SUMMER FRIDAY, JUNE 25 TO MONDAY, JUNE 28, 2010 NE064G710 © 2010. Just 24 hours after recording the first victory in franchise history with a 10-7 decision in Brooklin on Monday, the Rock were back at it Tuesday in Six Nations, but the result wasn’t as favourable. The Rock gave up six unanswered goals in the third period, result- ing in a 13-5 loss. Not only did the Rock give up the run of six, but it was the man- ner in which it unfolded that was a little troubling. Trailing 7-4 near- ing the midway mark of the third period, Six Nations scored six times in a span of just over eight minutes, three of those short- handed, and two of them coming within 31 seconds of each other during the same man advantage situation the Rock were on. Justin Gibson and Jesse Guerin scored two goals each for the Rock, while Jason Mainer chipped in with a goal and assist. Also col- lecting assists on the night were Garett Kikot with three, Jonas Derks with two, and one each to Bryan Johnson, Jordan Coffey and goalie Tyler Carlson. Carlson started the game but came out just over eight minutes into the third after giving up the eighth Six Nations goal. Scott Komer came on in relief, allowing five goals in 11:27 to finish out the game. According to pointstreak.com, the Rock actually held the edge in shots on goal, outshooting Six Nations 45-33. A big difference came on the power play, with the Rock going one for 12 and allow- ing the three shorthanded goals, while Six Nations converted on three of five chances. The game also included three fighting penalties to each team, with Ian Harloff, Kiel Dona- hue and Bill McLean picking up majors for the Rock. The loss dropped the Rock to 1-7-0 on the season as they head into the weekend with a pair of home games at the Ajax Com- munity Centre on the schedule, including Friday’s game at 8 p.m. against Brampton, and a rematch on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Six Nations. THE SCOOP -- The Rock received some sad news on Tues- day morning when they learned that assistant coach Gary Martin passed away after a short battle with cancer. Martin was an assis- tant coach with the team last sea- son, and was to return this sea- son. The funeral for the 62 year old is Friday at 11 a.m. at the Dixon-Garland Funeral Home in Markham. HOCKEY Laughton signs on with Oshawa Generals OSHAWA -- Scott Laughton is signed, sealed and soon to be delivered to the General Motors Centre. Chris DePiero, head coach and general manager of the Oshawa Generals, announced that the team has signed Laughton, the third overall selection in the 2010 OHL draft. “We are thrilled to have Scott join the Generals organization,” DePie- ro said in a press release. “He is a fierce competitor with tremen- dous skills and is a quality young man. With Scott’s hockey sense and leadership abilities he will be a key piece of this franchise that our fans are going to get to watch develop over the next few years.” Laughton, a 16-year-old native of Oakville, served as captain of the Toronto Marlboros minor midget team last season, where he reg- istered 55 goals, 95 points and added 109 penalty minutes in 76 games. He added three goals and 5 points in 7 games while leading the Marlies to the finals of the 2010 OHL Showcase Cup Tournament in March. Laughton will wear number 21 once the season starts in Septem- ber. “It’s incredible, being at rookie camp was great,” said Laughton. “It’s an honour to be able to sign with the Generals and I can’t wait to get the season started. Coming from a tremendous organization like the Marlboros with lots of tra- dition and then to be able to join the Generals with all their tradi- tion means a lot to me.” durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • June 24, 201027 AP EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Excell Communications is one of Canadaís largest independently-owned Bell dealers. The UltimateDrivers.ca-spon- sored Dodge had a faulty ignition wire slow the car early in the race, and McColm couldn’t overcome the time lost in the pits. “My Ultimate Drivers crew did a great job identifying the problem,” said the Ajax native. “Even though we lost spots in the pits we were able to gain five positions because they got the problem fixed. “Without a great crew we would have finished dead last.” McColm managed a 21st place finish, 13 laps behind the leaders. Despite the setback McColm had plenty to be proud of. “These are the best racers in Can- ada,” said McColm. “The top three drivers should be congratulated. JR Fitzpatrick, Andrew Ranger and Jason Bowles were fast today. “I’m excited about the speed we found in the race. Once the ignition problem was fixed we turned lap times comparable to drivers in the top 10. Our road course program is really stepping up.” McColm will race next when the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series vis- its Autodrome St. Eustache on Sat- urday, July 3. “We had a great run going in the season opener at Delaware Speed- way,” he said. “We lost a top five spot crashing on the last lap. If we can find some good fortune I think we can finish consistently in the top 10.” Engine troubles limit McColm to 21st place finish at Mosport Cars WantedC $200-$2000 Cash For Cars Dead or Alive Fast Free Towing 7 Days a Week 647-628-0946 Cars WantedC $250-$2000 Ajaxautowreckers.com Cash for Cars, Trucks and All Scrap Metal.
