Heroes at Home begins in Pickering
New veteran program
an ‘awesome
opportunity’: student
KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- A number of Pickering
students were thrilled to hear first-hand
stories of the Second World War Mon-
day thanks to a new pilot program and a
group of veterans eager to share experi-
ences.
The Heroes At Home Program was
launched at Sir John A. Macdonald Pub-
lic School Monday when four veterans
spoke with a group of Grade 7 and 8 stu-
dents in a discussion-type setting. The
program enables veterans to visit the
students to discuss their experiences
serving Canada.
The program, a partnership between
the Pickering Veterans’ Association and
the Durham District School Board, is
intended to not only help students learn
about Canada’s history, but to also high-
light the importance of good character,
as well as giving back.
“It sounds like a great idea,” said
RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND
PICKERING -- Pat Tranquada spoke to a group of Grade 7 students at Sir John A.
Macdonald Public School on June 7. The Pickering Veterans Association was dem-
onstrating the Heroes at Home program where war veterans visit schools to speak to
students. See PICKERING page 8

At issue is urbanization
of 3,200 acres
in northeast Pickering
REKA SZEKELY
rszekely@durhamregion.com
AJAX-PICKERING -- Whether to develop
a swath of land in northeast Pickering boils
down to a choice between food and floods,
Ajax Mayor Steve Parish and allies from envi-
ronmental groups say.
On June 2, Mayor Parish joined Sierra Club
Ontario chapter director Dan McDermott
in releasing a Sierra Club report support-
ing Ajax’s stance that the headwaters of the
Carruthers Creek in Pickering should not be
developed.
The lands are north of Hwy. 7 and west
of Lakeridge Road and are not part of the
Greenbelt. The Region of Durham included
the lands for development in its Growth Plan
submission to the Province. The Carruthers
Creek flows through Ajax and empties into
Lake Ontario at the Carruthers Marsh.
At the news conference, held at the Car-
ruthers Marsh pavilion in Ajax, Mayor Parish
said the concern is that area of south Ajax will
see more flooding if the headwaters of the
creek are developed.
“Some of the housing to the west of me is
already under flood designation.”
Mayor Parish said the land in question, about
3,200 acres, is projected to house about 30,000
people, a town the size of Orangeville. He said
the area does not connect to either the cur-
rent urban Pickering or the planned Seaton
subdivision and should not be developed.
“It’s a new settlement which is specifically
prohibited in the Places to Grow Act,” he said,
adding that in a draft decision, the Province
has recommended deleting the lands from
Pickering’s proposed urban area.
Pickering councillor Bonnie Littley said she
intended to ask Pickering council to withdraw
its support of the urbanization of the lands.
When asked by a member of the audience
who was behind designating the lands, Coun.
Littley didn’t name names, but Mayor Parish
did, calling out Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan.
“Mayor Ryan was very much behind this
and to the best of my knowledge still supports
this,” he said, adding Regional Chairman
Roger Anderson also strongly supported the
development.
Neither Mayor Ryan’s office nor Regional
representatives returned calls for comment
on the press conference and they were not
present at the event.
The Sierra Club report emphasized the
connection between urbanization and flood-
ing in other areas of Ontario. When land is
paved over, rainfall cannot be absorbed and
it travels over land into the creeks which see a
much larger flow rate, possibly causing flood-
ing in downstream areas. Mr. McDermott said
the water also picks up pollutants from the
paved surfaces and cited Frenchman’s Bay
in Pickering as a worst-case scenario. Runoff
from Hwy. 401 and urban Pickering has ren-
dered the water in Frenchman’s Bay too salty
to support the ecosystem it once did.
“When you pave it over, you increase the
possibility of flooding as well as the drainage
of pollutants,” said Mr. McDermott.
Rick Smith, of the Ontario Greenbelt Alli-
ance and Environmental Defence, said coun-
cils in other parts of the GTA were passing
motions to protect their remaining green
spaces and there wouldn’t be a second
opportunity to get things right.

New report
to engage residents
and stakeholders
PICKERING -- The City’s release of a new
living document will help navigate Picker-
ing’s sustainable journey.
The Measuring Sustainability Report,
released on June 1, helps benchmark the
City’s progress in transforming itself from a
suburban community to a sustainable city.
The report, which can be found online, has
32 indicators of sustainability, grouped into
the areas of healthy environment, healthy
economy, healthy society, responsible devel-
opment and responsible consumption.
They’re being tracked with the help of
community partners.
The indicators touch a number of bases,
from the quality of Pickering’s air and water
to Pickering’s progress toward being an
inclusive and welcoming community with
healthy employment opportunities.
The report includes information and links
describing what residents and stakehold-
ers can do to help, since measurable prog-
ress can only be made with the community’s
participation and assistance, according to a
press release.
Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson,
chairman of the Sustainable Pickering Advi-
sory Committee, is proud of all of the hard
work and consultation that went into the
report.
“This landmark report will play an instru-
mental role in how Pickering matures as a
city,” he said.
Mayor Dave Ryan mentioned Pickering’s
goal is to become one of the most sustain-
able cities in Canada.
“Not only will this report track our progress
and set our course, it will do so by engag-
ing our residents and stakeholders, which
makes for an even stronger and livable com-
munity,” he said.

Opinions
durhamregion.com Sustainable city requires sustained effort by citizens, Pickering officials
Pickering officials are recruiting every-
day residents to help the city transform
itself from a suburban bedroom commu-
nity to a sustainable city.
And it’s crucial that City officials and
taxpayers work together to ensure that
Pickering succeeds in the coming months
and years in reducing its environmental
footprint, reduces its reliance on climate-
changing energy and minimizes its con-
tribution to air and water pollution.
The Measuring Sustainability Report,
released June 1, helps provide bench-
marks for the City to follow -- in partner-
ship with residents -- as it implements
strategies and adopts policies to make
Pickering a livable, sustainable city.
To be successful in moving away from a
culture of consumption, every single res-
ident in Pickering can do a small part to
contribute to the cause.
It can be as simple as switching off lights
in your home or business, collecting rain-
water for your garden, or taking a walk to
the store instead of hopping in your car.
Each individual effort can make a small
difference in addressing the 32 indica-
tors of sustainability included in the City’s
report which covers such areas as the
environment, responsible development
and consumption and a healthy society.
But just as City officials want to create
a livable and living society, the Measur-
ing Sustainability Report must be a living
document. To that end, residents can ani-
mate it by adopting the recommendations
to suit their own needs, by taking action
in their neighbourhoods and communi-
ties, or by adding to the solution with their
own innovative ideas.
Sustainability in Pickering will require a
substantial, long-term commitment from
City officials and local residents.
By working in partnership, Pickering
and its citizens can minimize energy con-
sumption and our collective use of natural
resources, reduce the output of heat, air
and water pollution, establish and grow
food and produce partnerships closer to
home, use land resources more efficiently
and look for ways to expand our already
successful Durham Region recycling and
composting programs.
There is much work to do, to be certain,
but Pickering residents have demonstrat-
ed their awareness and their willingness
to contribute to sustainability.
City officials must continue to pro-
mote the initiative, continue to monitor
the benchmarks and continue to recruit
everyday citizens to the cause.
A sustained effort will help create a sus-
tainable city.

Dog owners responsible
for ensuring pet safety
To the editor:
Re: Speeding driver killed my dog, letter to
the editor, May 31.
As an avid dog lover I am deeply sad-
dened to hear of the premature loss of a
loved one.
Our beloved pets rely on us to provide a
safe environment for them to live long and
happy lives. Whether by misfortune or neg-
ligence Rocco’s owners did not do this.
While the speeding driver indeed killed
Rocco in Pickeirng, Rocco’s death was
preventable with the level of care that is
required with having a pet.
To say, “Today my dog, tomorrow it could
be a child” is rhetoric from someone who
refuses to accept this responsibility. The
Gukathasans may also be surprised to learn
that according to the law they can be held
responsible for any damages to the car in
this unfortunate and preventable accident.
As I hug my own dog, I wish that this inci-
dent had not happened.

TAXES
Don’t forget HST
at election time
To the editor:
On July 1 the Harmonized Sales Tax
(HST) takes effect in Ontario, enacted by
Premier Dalton McGuinty’s government.
It will extend the eight per cent Provincial
Sales Tax (PST) to products and servic-
es for which we now only pay the five per
cent Goods and Services Tax (GST). This
tax increase will be applied to electricity,
natural gas, and insurance as well as many
other products.
Although it is good for business the HST
will be a burden for consumers, particu-
larly those working at low paying jobs and
those on fixed incomes. This comes from a
premier who promised in 2003 not to raise
taxes but who gave us the health care pre-
mium or tax in his first year as premier, and
now this.
The tax credits and rebates Premier
McGuinty promised to soften the impact of
the HST are mainly for one year only and
not much at that.
The new tax is also being implemented
in British Columbia where there are orga-
nized protests and petitions against it,
unlike in Ontario where we are passively
accepting the HST, something which Pre-
mier McGuinty counts on as well as our
collective poor memory at election time.
People will lose their homes over this tax
but the Premier has not promised to lower
the PST to offset the increase.
As in B.C. we should remember at elec-
tion time who voted for this tax grab and
send a message to have it revoked or
reduced for the sake of the economy and
people.

Harper having declared himself a friend
and supporter of Israel, it should be no sur-
prise that our government is taking a wait-
and-see stand on Israel’s actions against
the Gaza flotilla.
Although much of the world has been
quick to express condemnation, and
ambassadors are being summoned around
the world to explain Israel’s actions, Harp-
er spokesman Dimitri Soudas says only
that, “Canada deeply regrets the loss of life
and the injuries suffered...we are current-
ly looking for more information in order to
shed light on what exactly happened.”
It should be pretty obvious what hap-
pened; Israel committed an act of pira-
cy in international waters. And if, as we
are increasingly being told, the activists
responded with force after being boarded,
then they had every right under interna-
tional law to do so.
Typical Canadian pussyfooting. Wait to
see which side of the debate comes out on
top, and then issue pious pronouncements
guaranteed to attract only approval and
praise.
No guts at all.

High-speed Internet Access Survey
Various locations across Durham Region
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & TOURISM PUBLIC NOTICE
Public input requested to help your community improve
access to high-speed Internet
In recent years, governments have initiated programs to help ensure
that citizens have access to high-speed Internet service. As a
telecommunication service, the Internet is a critical component of
business, education, health and daily life.
The Regional Municipality of Durham wants to identify areas where
high-speed Internet access is not available to its citizens. High speed
is defined as a minimum of 1.5 Mbps sustained speed of service.
The Region will seek information from multiple sources, but the key
input will come from citizens. This information will be used to discuss
options with telecom providers and for policy decision-making. The
results may be incorporated into an application for funding to expand
broadband service reach.
If you are interested in providing input, please contact us through one
of the options listed below and tell us your name, civic address, and
explain why you do not have service, or if you have tried to acquire
service but have not been successful, please tell us why.
For more information, please visit www.durham.ca.

JagJagAndrew Moss, a Grade 7/8 split teach-
er, pointing out the students seemed so
eager to hear the stories they were prac-
tically falling forward out of their chairs.
He said the program will teach a num-
ber of character traits such as teamwork,
perseverance, respect and courage. In
fact, the students were going to discuss
what they learned in each of those cate-
gories afterward.
Also, the topic of war allows the qui-
eter students to come out of their shells
because it’s something they’re legiti-
mately interested in.
“These kids love talking about war,” he
said.
Hearing the history from the mouths
of those who have fought in the war will
usually stick with the kids more than a
book, he said.
Seventh grader Tyler McGhee found
the program to be “an awesome opportu-
nity.”
Tyler has had relatives who had fought
in past wars, but they’ve all died, and he
embraced the opportunity to speak to
the veterans.
“I find it cool we’re learning about all
the stuff they did,” he said.
He also found it pretty shocking that
the veterans were just in their teens
when they enlisted, but found it interest-
ing that four veterans were strangers at
one time, “yet they’re in the same situa-
tion, all for the same reason.”
Elsie Hetherman, president of the
Veterans’ Association, said everyone
involved was pleased with the event.
“We are really happy with it and we’re
most happy because the veterans were
just thrilled,” she said. “They were
thrilled because the kids were so recep-
tive and they asked so many questions.”
Students walking up to the veterans to
shake their hands at the end of the ses-
sion was most impressive, she said.
Ms. Hetherman said when she was vol-
unteering with reading programs at a
Pickering elementary school in the past,
she found about half of the kids had
divorced parents, and many lacked a
strong male figure in their lives.
“A lot of kids, particularly boys, do need
a man in their lives,” she said.
She hopes bringing the veterans into
the schools will provide a grandfather-
type role for them.
The pilot program will take place
throughout Pickering public schools this
year, with plans to expand it in 2011, Ms.
Hetherman said.
“My main goal is to keep the name vet-
eran alive,” she said, adding she hopes
to expand the program to veterans from
all of the other wars, including the war in
Afghanistan.
I fi nd it cool we’re learning about all the stuff they did. Tyler

Reporters pick best ribs
of Pickering Ribfest
KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- I had no trouble getting out of
bed on Friday knowing what assignment would
be awaiting me that sunny afternoon.
I set my ongoing “diet” aside that day and sam-
pled eight different rib recipes from professional
ribbers across North America at the third annu-
al Pickering Ribfest held by the Rotary Clubs
of Ajax and Pickering. The popular event drew
nearly 70,000 people to Esplanade Park over the
weekend.
It was a tough call, but after seeking the help of
Ajax reporter Reka Szekely, and Pickering resi-
dent and Carleton University journalism student
Natalie van Rooy, the Silver Bullet BBQ got our
vote for best ribs thanks to its tasty sauce.
“For me, the sauce makes the rib and the Silver
Bullet had exactly the right combination of sweet
and tangy,” Reka reported. “The seasoning gave
it a bit of a bite making for a super yummy rib
and next year they’ll be the first ribber I visit.”
Natalie planned to tell her family to visit the Sil-
ver Bullet stand. “They were definitely the best,”
she said between bites.
We agreed The Thirsty Cactus, a newbie at the
Pickering Ribfest, had the best melt-off-the bone
ribs. “A little more seasoning on the ribs would
have made them my winner,” Reka said.
All of the ribs were fantastic. We didn’t rate any
less than seven out of 10.
When I wrote a preview article to remind
people Ribfest was approaching, I made sure
to mention there is one thing serious rib-lovers
must not forget: wet napkins.
And, of course, what did I forget? Wet nap-
kins. Although I figured taking a big wad of paper
towel from the good sports at Camp 31 would
suffice, boy, was I wrong; I ran out of paper towel
after my third tasting or so. But the ribs were just
too good to leave, even if only for five minutes, in
search of more napkins.
Reka and I must have exuded professionalism
when Mayor Dave Ryan, council and other poli-
ticians paraded into the park for the official kick-
off to find us, instead of dutifully taking notes like
most of our encounters, licking our fingers, with
eight half-empty rib containers, bones and wad-
ded-up paper towels taking up an entire picnic
table.
Thank goodness for the people from Sanctuary
Pickering, who passed out wet napkins before
Mayor Ryan and the rest of the gang stopped by
to ask for our verdict.
I left before I gave into the tempting smell
of Tiny Tom’s Donuts. But the variety of food
options, donation opportunities, the composta-
ble containers and utensils, beer, natural shade,
large seating area, ample parking and interesting
vendors, rides and games for the kids made it a
must-visit for next year.

PICKERING -- Thanks to local churches,
organizations, volunteers and Pickering
residents, a couple of local food banks will
benefit greatly from a large, one-day food
drive that took place in Pickering recently.
“Over 300 volunteers, investing over 2,500
hours, collected 10,364 pounds of food,”
reported Pastor Fred Stewart of Amberlea
Presbyterian Church.
This spring, Pastor Stewart and members
of his church, with the help of a number
of other local churches and organizations,
launched the first of hopefully many initia-
tives in the future, Pickering Cares.
The Pickering Cares door-to-door com-
munity food drive invited residents in the
L1V area code to leave non-perishable
food items at their front doors on May 15.
Those outside of the area, or those away
for the weekend, were invited to drop off
donations at any Pickering fire station.
That day volunteers collected and sort-
ed the food, creating a convenient way to
donate to the St. Paul’s On-the-Hill Com-
munity Food Bank and the Ajax-Pickering
Salvation Army.
The group of volunteers hopes to con-
tinue to make the Pickering Cares door-
to-door food drive an annual event, and
to hold future initiatives such as helping
local women’s shelters and autism support
groups.

(NC)—You can never be too careful with
outdoor meals at this time of year. Lots of
sunshine and heat can easily turn picnics
and barbecues into a breeding ground for
harmful bacteria, such as salmonella—and
nothing spoils summer fun faster than a
dose of food poisoning.
“Our testing for gastro-intestinal related
illness does increase somewhat during the
barbecue season,” says Dr. Doug Tkachuk
at LifeLabs, a leading diagnostic test cen-
tre. “So we can’t over emphasize how im-
portant it is to handle, wash, and prepare
food with those cautions in mind.”
Here are some LifeLabs food safety tips:
• Wash hands often during meal prepara-
tion to prevent bacteria from spreading.
• When using a cooler, separate raw meat
from ready-to-eat foods, including vegeta-
bles, to prevent cross-contamination.
• Keep hot food hot and cold food cold.
Cover hot foods such as steak, chicken or
hot dogs in foil to retain heat and eat them
right away.
• Cold foods should stay chilled at 4° C or
below. Promptly refrigerate any food you
plan to save for the next day.
• Cook your meats, fi sh and poultry thor-
oughly and use a thermometer to ensure
they have reached the proper cooked tem-
perature. Clean the thermometer each time
you check.
• Use a clean plate when taking food off
the grill. Remember not to put cooked food
on the same plate that held raw meat.
• Melon is a favourite summer fruit but
it is at greater risk of contamination due to
its netted rind. Be sure to wash the surface
thoroughly before cutting.. Do not leave cut
melons at room temperature for more than
two hours.
• Food items prepared with mayonnaise,
or those high in protein should be chilled
until served and as soon as possible again,
after. Don’t let them sit in the direct sun-
shine. Bacteria multiplies easily in moist
foods and warm conditions
• Always keep food out of the tempera-
ture danger zone of 4° C to 60° C in which
bacteria can grow. After only two hours in
this temperature range food can become
dangerous.

Prevent food illness in the heat of summer
(NC)—Even in summer, too many tempting devices
are likely to keep your kid on the couch.
And yet the good news is that most of youth rank
“playing sports” very high in terms of interest and en-
joyment.
So why is it that inactivity among Canadian children
continues to rise? One reason might be that television,
computers, and video games are right there at their fi n-
gertips – and the temptation may be even worse in sum-
mertime, when kids have so much time on their hands.
“Children need to learn a love for exercise at a young
age to make their hearts strong and to prevent the many
diseases associated with obesity,” says Dr. Doug Tka-
chuk at Lifelabs, a leading diagnostic test centre. “Dia-
betes, particularly in children, is on the rise in North
America, but this can be reversed if families become
more dedicated to a healthier lifestyle involving food
and exercise. The key is to make it fun.”
“Aim for at least one hour of physical exercise or ac-
tivity every day so your child’s muscles and bones de-
velop properly,” the doctor continued. “Motivate them
with a daily plan so they look forward to it. Your park
visit, for example, might start with playing freely with
other children at fi rst, followed by a ball game, badmin-
ton, skipping rope, playing tag, or any other kind of
heart-pumping fun.”

MAJOR SERIES LACROSSE
Rock drops second straight
Games get tougher
with Brampton,
Six Nations and
Peterborough
ahead
SHAWN CAYLEY
scayley@durhamregion.com
AJAX --The 0-2 start to the
Major Series Lacrosse season
isn’t as disappointing to Ajax-
Pickering Rock head coach Jim
Veltman as is the manner in
which it occurred.
Veltman’s club fell to 0-2 last
Friday following a slim 11-10
loss to the Brooklin Redmen.
It was a game, he said, that was
winnable for his club. However,
Veltman, a long-time veteran of
the box lacrosse game, knows
those nights will happen as his
team continues to build.
“We had control of the game
late in the third and it got away
from us,” the coach said. “It’s
part of being a bit young and
inexperienced and not settling
down the game when it needs to
be or not picking up your game
when it needs to be. We can
chalk that one up to inexperi-
ence, I think.”
The Rock came out strong,
opening the scoring just over
a minute in and building a 6-
4 lead after 20 minutes of play.
After two periods, they still had
the lead, albeit a slim one at 8-
7.
The two club’s then traded
goals twice in the first six min-
utes of the third, which still left
the Rock ahead. Then the turn-
ing point came.
Brooklin coach Wayne Colley
made a goalie change, which
surprised the Rock and seem-
ingly rattled the young club. The
Rock were held scoreless from
then on and two Brooklin goals
in 2:02 inside the final eight
minutes sealed the deal.
As disappointing as the turn in
fortunes was, Veltman did pull
some positives out of the set-
back.
“It was a bit of a heartbreaker
for us and I thought we deserved
a better result, but I liked our
improvement,” he said.
“We lost 11-7 to them the first
game and then this game we
had them 10-9 in the third peri-
od late.”
While they have proven to
be in tough during two games
against Brooklin, things cer-
tainly won’t get any easier for
the Rock, starting Thursday
against the Brampton Excelsi-
ors, followed by games against
the Peterborough Lakers and Six
Nations Chiefs.
On the flip side, though, the
tougher competition will only
be a good thing for the long-
term development of the Rock.
“You’ve got to measure up to
some of the best teams and I
don’t mind that,” Veltman said.
“I enjoy playing teams that
are maybe more our level with
Brooklin and Kitchener, but
at the same time. guys have to
experience what it is like to play
against the best and that is what
we’re going up against the next
three games. I think it will be
a good measuring stick for us
and help us get a sense of where
we’re really at.”
Meanwhile, from a roster stand
point, the team hasn’t quite set-
tled on what it has. The Rock are
still awaiting potential commit-
ments from a few players and
the hope is that all that will be
ironed out soon.
“Our idea is to sort of set our
lineup so that we’re not a team
that is always evolving and ever-
changing. I believe that we’re
a team that needs to develop
together as a group and you can’t
do that if you keep on bring-
ing in new faces. We’re going to
try and set our team as quick as
possible,” Veltman said.
One player they are holding
out hope for is Steve Keough,
who was the first pick in the dis-
persal draft of the Barrie Lake-
shores.
Keough is unlikely to make a
full commitment to the Rock
due to other obligations in Syra-
cuse, but Veltman said the team
can live with that.
“Any given night, if he can play,
we’re going to insert him into
our lineup and get him excited
about being an Ajax-Pickering
Rock,” he said.

AJAX -- Brooklin Redmen’s Derek Hopcroft took the ball as Ajax-Pickering Rock’s Billy McLean looked
to defend in Major Series Lacrosse league action Friday at the Ajax Community Centre. The Rock lost
their second straight to Brooklin, this time falling 11-10.

Poland
Pickering hurdler
makes it back
to the podium
BYDGOSZCZ, POLAND -- Per-
dita Felicien’s first visit to Poland
was a good one.
The 29-year-old Pickering hur-
dler captured gold in the wom-
en’s 100-metre hurdles event at
the IX European Athletics Festi-
val. Felicien won in a time of 12.99
seconds, just ahead of Jamaica’s
Delloreen Ennis-London, who
clocked in at 13.02, and Whitby’s
Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, who fin-
ished at 13.05 after receiving a
warning for jumping the gun.
While happy with the win, Fel-
icien at first was a little confused
when the race times were posted
on the stadium’s Jumbotron.
“I came away with the win but
when all the ladies saw the Jum-
botron results, we were con-
fused,” Felicien wrote on her blog.
“The race felt a lot faster than
what it was telling us. But turns
out the wind was a very strong -
1.8m/s. So in that regard my 12.99
isn’t too bad.”
Felicien arrived in Poland just
a day before Sunday’s race after
competing in Oslo the previous
day.
This weekend, she is back closer
to home as the Diamond League
makes a stop in New York City.
“I’m looking forward to racing a
tough field this weekend in NYC
as the Diamond League comes
to North America. And hoping
to finally execute a race I can be
technically happy about,” she
wrote.
I came away with the win, but when
all the ladies saw the

U8 prevails in a shootout
MISSISSAUGA -- The Ajax Blast, a mem-
ber of Ajax Soccer Club, won the U8 girls’
division in the Mississauga International
Soccer Tournament.
In the preliminary round, Ajax fin-
ished with a 2-1 record with its only loss
to rivals UMSC Strikers 5-2 in the first
game. After the first game, the coach-
ing staff made some adjustments around
team defence and the girls only gave up
one goal per game for the remainder of
the tournament defeating the host Mis-
sissauga Falcons 3-1 and Dixie Athlet-
ics 8-1. With their 2-1 record, the Blast
advanced to the semifinals where they
once again defeated the Mississauga Fal-
cons 3-1 to advance to the finals.
The championship game was a
rematch with the UMSC Strikers. Union-
ville scored first on a penalty shot. The
coaching staff again made some minor
adjustments and the girls responded by
tieing the game with about 10 minutes
left to play. The game went directly into
a shootout. When the dust settled, the
Blast walked away as the U8 tournament
champions as a result of UMSC’s first two
shooters missing the net.
Goals came from Maeve Camp-
bell, Emma DeSilva, Guilia Giovinazzi,
Brieanna Grant, Grace Hurren, Mikayla
Moser and Caitlyn Nyla Burgess. Deja
Newell provided outstanding goalkeep-
ing. Caitlyn Searle was awarded the tour-
nament game ball for her exemplary play
throughout the tournament.
Team members are Nyla Burgess,
Maeve Campbell, Emma DeSilva, Imman
Elberdi, Guilia Giovinazzi, Briean-
na Grant, Jaeda Grant, Grace Hurren,
Mikayla Moser, Deja Newell, Caitlyn
Searle, Savanna Stubbs and Kaiya Toth.
The team is coached by Karen Michalic-
ka, along with assistant coaches Bob Til-
ley and Ken Burgess, and manager Pat-
rick Stubbs.
