Gordon Zimmerman has been volunteer- ing to benefit Ontario’s building heritage since the early 1960s. He’s a trained architect, having graduated from the University of Toronto in 1957, and “has brought a special flair to the vol- unteer communities in which he participates,” Mayor Dave Ryan said when he recognized Mr. Zimmerman at a recent council meeting. He was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award at a ceremony held at Queen’s Park, which the mayor attended, where he asked Mr. Zimmerman if he’d mind a ceremony in Pickering. “I was quite surprised because I knew that the City had put my name forward for some- thing at the Provincial level, but then time went by and I sort of forgot about it,” Mr. Zim- merman said in an interview. The retired architect worked with Public Works Canada’s Ontario Region for 27 years, primarily on preserving and maintaining fed- eral government buildings. The subdivision is located just south of Rossland Road on Audley Road. Three trucks were at the scene on Thursday afternoon. “It’s a working fire between two homes,” said Ajax Fire Department platoon chief Paul Ritchie. The homes are part of a row of fully attached townhouses. Mr. Ritchie said there were no injuries. A construction worker who declined to provide his name said the fire was the result of a “small accident” and some tar paper caught fire. EMERGENCY SERVICES Ajax home under construction catches fire BY JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- A man found dead Wednesday afternoon in Oshawa has been identified as a patient who went missing from the Ontar- io Shores mental health centre earlier in the week. An autopsy is being conducted to deter- mine the cause of death of Alexander Nolan, 24. The York Region man was being treated at the Whitby hospital after being declared not criminally responsible for the death of a family member. Mr. Nolan, who was diag- nosed with schizophrenia and required medication daily, left the south Whitby facil- ity on a day pass Monday. Police were called when he failed to return Monday evening. A City of Oshawa worker found the young man’s body in a culvert that runs below Nas- sau Street south of Gibb Street early Wednes- day afternoon, police said. In a statement released Thursday after- noon Ontario Shores president Glenna Ray- mond expressed sadness over the man’s death. Transport Canada, in charge of the fed- eral lands, has arranged regular security patrols for the abandoned homes, and it was security personnel who discovered the blaze at about 9 a.m. “We are treating the fire as suspicious,” said Pickering Platoon Chief Geoff Nich- olson. He added it appeared the fire started on the porch of the building and by the time fire crews arrived the house was fully engulfed by the flames. There was no hydro to the building. Chief Nicholson said the fire did $150,000 damage. Fire prevention officers are investigat- ing. The road was closed north of Hwy. 7 as fire crews worked to contain the blaze. This is second fire in an abandoned home in Pickering this week. On Wednesday, a vacant building on Dunfair Street, near Dunbarton High School, burned. But, fees could have fallen by more than $400 KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- For the second straight year, Durham Region won’t be indexing some development charges. That means a slight drop in DCs imposed on new homes, although the decrease could have been hundreds of dollars more if the fees were indexed to the full amount. DCs are based on the Statistics Canada Non-residential Construction Price Index and it dropped 2.4 per cent from March of last year to March of this year. The fees are imposed on new homes to cover growth-related services such as roads, sewers, police, water and paramedic services. The Region, local municipalities and school boards all impose DCs, which passed on to the consumer in the price of a new home. For a single-detached home, the cur- rent Regional rate is $18,521. The amount would drop by $24, to $18,497, if approved by Regional council on June 2. A 2.4-per cent drop in DCs would have meant a decrease of $444. Last year, DCs were to go up by 4.5 per cent, but council decided on a one-year freeze to give the development industry some relief during the recession. By not increasing the fees, the Region didn’t col- lect $5.4 million in DCs. During a meeting of the Regional finance committee on Wednesday, Ajax Mayor Steve Parish opposed the plan to waive the indexing. It’s the same position he took last year. “We should not waive indexing,” he said, pointing to the lost revenue last year. “It’s lost, gone, goodbye. “We can’t give a decrease this year because we did it last year. Waiving index- ing will make you a hero, but you won’t accomplish what you want,” he said. DCs dropping 2.4 per cent “is a real anom- aly. Most years, it won’t go down.” Whitby Councillor Don Mitchell also opposed the move, saying lost income will have to be made up by homeowners. Mr. Zimmerman naturally fell into the field since his father owned a builder sup- ply business, and was a house builder before that, making the business a big part of his family for around 100 years. “So it wasn’t hard,” he said. Although Mr. Zimmerman plans to take life and projects one day at a time, “there’s no lack of things to do.” He’s been working with other local vol- unteers, such as John Sabean, to create a registry for significant buildings. “We’ve made a start of it but there’s still a lot more,” he said. He also has a great interest in the Green- wood Library, which was the Greenwood Schoolhouse that former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker attended, and feels it deserves a federal designation. And there’s no shortage of Pickering homes to take an interest in, both old and modern. He said there are some on Whitevale Road he’s particularly interested in, and he also feels the Bentley-Carruthers farm- house on the federal lands is well worth preserving. “They’re probably over a hundred years in all these cases,” he said. He’s fond of more modern ones as well, such as the Cleeve Horne House on the 8th Concession. “It’s spectacular,” he said. “It’s not big, maybe 30 feet by 30 feet.” But he feels these homes are wonderful and should be maintained. “It’s a difficult thing, but that’s what it’s really all about, to find the ones that are significant architecturally and historically and get them preserved,” he said. But it wasn’t a work- shop on quarterly revenue projections or balance sheet sums, it was about the business that cyclists can bring to Dur- ham’s local economies. The event brought local business offi- cials together to learn about the jaw- dropping revenue potential that can be tapped if Durham was more aggressive in attracting avid cyclers and cycling groups to discover the great trail systems, scenic landscapes and challenging road routes the region can offer. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish, an avid cyclist with thousands of kilometres of travel to his credit, provided the keynote speech as part of the event to raise awareness of the Welcome Cyclists Network. The WCN is the part of the larg- er Transportation Options non-profit organization formed to promote cycling and sustainable transportation systems. And the message it brought should raise some eyebrows in local municipali- ties. Cyclists and cycling networks, noted Mayor Parish at the event, tend to be more affluent, have above-average edu- cation and tend to spend wherever their trails take them. The WCN’s research reinforces that notion: in 2007, 1.5 mil- lion visitors participated in cycling activi- ties in Ontario, spending more than $300 million. The Netherlands reports 2.5 mil- lion overnight stays annually are made by cycling tourists. In Switzerland, cyclists using the Swiss trail systems generated approximately $135 million in revenues in 2004. Durham Region municipalities boast wonderfully developed urban and water- front trails. Endless skies and rolling fields beckon those who choose to cycle through our scenic rural communities. Trails are well maintained and bike- friendly. There are numerous greenspac- es, forests and rest spots. And they’re all connected, in one way or another, with the people and places that make up Dur- ham Region’s communities. We hope every business takes note of the potential for luring cyclists and cycling groups to the communities in which they operate. Pitch your products or services through bike networks. Make sure your business is bicycle friendly. Take the opportunity to recruit supportive politi- cians to the cause and raise awareness of the revenue and profit potential through local government. Along with the obvious health benefits associated with cycling, it can also pro- vide a boost to the health of local econo- mies. Businesses that choose not to capi- talize on the potential offered could liter- ally see profits drive right on by. -- Metroland Durham Region Media Group The clash between Israeli soldiers and a flotilla of activists looking to run Israel’s blockade of Gaza was the biggest interna- tional story this week. That’s not a surprise given that nine of the activists were killed and both activists and Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers were wounded. While the events of May 31 are a hot political issue, they’re also a prime example of the effect of social media on how news reaches the public. And in this case the public is anyone around the world with an Internet connection. Activists have long used the Internet and social media to get their message across. This case was no different and the activists were carrying camera phones and were able to quickly spread video around the world with the help of colleagues on safer shores operating their websites. But what’s interesting was the response from the Israeli military. Shortly after news of the clash broke, IDF began posting video of the incident on YouTube, at one point posting a new video every couple of hours. The organization also has a blog (where they embed the YouTube videos) and a Twitter account which they used to further spread their perspective. Essentially, the global public had no need to tune in to the six o’clock news or watch CNN cycle through the news to view video of the incident; they could go online and it was at their fingertips. They could form their own opinions based on the footage and content from both sides and quickly share that information with their friends and family. As more and more information came to light, journalists were left to play catch-up, the news on their websites often lagging behind what was already disseminated over Twitter. Now, police and military video taping protests is nothing new and plainclothes officers have been taping certain protests in Toronto for at least a decade. As anyone who can remember those grainy images of the first Gulf War on CNN in the 1990s knows, the military has been taping opera- tions for probably much longer. The difference was those videos were rarely released to the public and if they were, it was to major media networks who used the footage as they saw fit. They chose how to edit, where to place it in the news- cast and how often to repeat it. The public had no choice but to passively watch. All that’s changed now and the public is directly involved in both creating, docu- menting and distributing the news. With the G20 meeting heading to Toronto, thousands of activists descend on the City, some intent on clashing with police. Videos of those clashes will hit the net quickly and it’ll be interesting to see whether Toronto police will respond by releasing their own footage. If you’re a Durham resident planning on checking out the protests, either as an observer or a participant, e-mail me your photos or tweet me and I’ll post them on my blog. --Contact Ajax reporter Reka Szekely on Facebook, follower her on Twitter @rszekely or e-mail her at rszekely@durhamregion.com Reaction to Gaza flotilla clash shows power of social media Reka Szekely A Metroland Media Group Ltd. As part of the regional services, a study for the provision of service facilities is also underway. The CPDP was completed by the Province in May 2006 and requires the Region to proceed with planning the infrastructure works required for the area. In order to meet this requirement, a study is underway to meet the environmental assessment requirements, by developing a servicing plan based on environmental considerations, as well as technical and  nancial ef ciencies. The study consists of two projects: 1. Water and Wastewater Infrastructure (e.g. watermains, sewers, pumping stations, reservoirs); and 2. Transportation (e.g. roads, bridges, cycling paths/ lanes and sidewalks in Regional road rights-of-way) and Transit Infrastructure. In addition, the Region has chosen to undertake a separate Class EA process for the service facility component of the regional services. The service facility component is also a Schedule C project and will be conducted concurrently with this Study. The projects will be conducted in accordance with the process de ned in both the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) document (October 2000, as amended in 2007) and Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure Class Environmental Assessment Process (as amended September 2008). The Environmental Assessment for the projects will ful ll the requirements of both the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act (EAA) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). The two projects that form part of the study will need to meet different schedules under the Class EA process, as follows: 1. Schedule B – water and wastewater Infrastructure 2. Schedule C – transportation and transit infrastructure A third project for the service facility is also being conducted as a Schedule C. Public Information Centre No. 1 All interested stakeholders are invited to provide input pertaining to the two projects at the Public Information Centre (PIC). PIC No. 1 is the  rst of two PIC’s to be held to provide an opportunity for interested stakeholders to learn about the project (incuding the project background), potential alternatives, evaluation process of the alternatives, and next steps as well provide feedback concerning the study. Representatives from both the Region of Durham and the consultant, GENIVAR, will be present at the PICs to answer questions and discuss the study progression to date. The  rst PIC has been scheduled as follows: Date: Wednesday, June 16, 2010 Time: 6 - 8:30 p.m. Location: Pickering Recreation Complex, 1875 Valley Farm Road The O’Brien Room (arena entrance at rear) We are interested in hearing any comments or concerns you may have with respect to this study. Comments will be maintained for reference throughout the project and will become part of the public record. Under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Environmental Assessment Act, unless otherwise stated in the submission, any personal information such as name, address, telephone number and property location included in a submission will become part of the public record  les for this matter and will be released, if requested, to any person. Current and former residents are invited to celebrate Ajax from June 14 to June 20 when the festivities will con- clude with the Waterfront Festival and fireworks. For 40 years, the Town’s five service clubs have played a prominent role in Home Week. They are: the Ajax Rota- ry Club, the Ajax Lions Club, The Kinsmen Club of Ajax, The Optimist Youth Club of Ajax and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 322. The fun kicks off with a ribbon cut- ting and pasta night at the Ajax Lions Club. In addition to celebrating Ajax’s past, organizers are reaching out to the future and emphasizing youth involvement. Twenty-year-old Matt Hayes is the Youth Chair. He’s following in his father Patrick’s footsteps. An Ajax fire- fighter, Patrick Hayes will serve as the fireworks chair for the fourth year running. “I’ve gone to Home Week since I was born, I’ve seen the fireworks and it’s amazing,” said Matt Hayes. Mr. Hayes said his goal as youth chair is to get the mes- sage out that anyone can get involved with Home Week. “We’re always looking for volunteers to come out, even if it’s setting up tables or running a game,” he said. Anisa Hajizadeh, 16, is a youth ambassador for Home Week and she said she thinks it’s important for youth to get involved with local events. As to what she thinks will be the most popular? “The fireworks, hands down, because I think youth just like to relax and chill,” she said, adding that the annual fireworks display is simply stunning. The festival kicks off at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 20 at Rotary Park with a pancake breakfast. Activities throughout the day include a watermelon eating contest and a horse- shoe tournament. It all culminates with the fireworks at approximately 10 p.m. This year, Home Week organizers are spending $14,800 on the fireworks display. Families can also celebrate on Friday, June 18 at the Mardi Gras Masquerade Parade at the Durham Centre at Harwood Avenue and Kingston Road. A pre-parade family events start at 6:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 9:30 p.m. Parade watchers will receive a free bead neck- lace and there will be free buses to the event for seniors. Details are in the Home Week book. Vickie Camara is the parade chair and one of the own- ers of Casey’s in the Durham Centre and she’s a big fan of Home Week, having participated for about 15 years. “It brings people out, it lets them know what’s going on in their own backyard in Ajax, (people) get to know their neighbours,” she said. “We’ve got lots to offer in Ajax.” Home Week Chair Wilma Graham said her highlights will include the Home Fest Steak Barbecue at the Ajax Community Centre on June 19 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. For $15, adults get a steak dinner and a chance to enjoy some live entertainment from Nuth’n Fancy at a fun, casual dress event. Ms. Graham remembers participating in Home Week as a child and she wanted to say thank you to MPP and former Ajax councillor Joe Dickson for his hard work. “He’s built Ajax Home Week to what it is,” she said. As for Ms. Camara, she has one main message for res- idents: “Don’t miss it. See what our community is all about.” For more information: VISIT ajaxhomeweek.com COMMUNITY Ajax Home Week celebrates 40th anniversary durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • June 4, 201012 AP We weren’t dancing BY MIKE JOHNSTON mjohnston@durhamregion.com CLARINGTON -- I like to go slow. No, let me rephrase that. The only thing I enjoy more than a fast car is a faster roller- coaster, but when it comes to using my own two feet and mov- ing to music, the slower the better. I am musically inclined. I do a great air guitar rendition of Styx’s Come Sail Away, my favourite movie is Singing in the Rain and the best video I have ever seen is Michael Jackson’s Thriller. I love So You Think You Can Dance and if we ever get our work band, the Somali Pirates, underway I will be the lead singer. But when it comes to dancing with my wife, I can move slowly in circles on the dance floor with the best of them. So when Antal Ronaszeki from the Social Dancesport Club asked me to be part of a Dancing with the Stars competition as part of a fundraiser for the club, my wife immediately agreed. I would need 990 more toes and fingers to count how many times my wife Brenda has asked me to take ballroom dance lessons. So I agreed and as part of the competition, we were invited to take beginner waltz lessons with instructor and past world champion dancer Vladimir Kurchevskis. The contest has since fallen through, but we stayed with the lessons. For the past six weeks from 4 to 5 p.m. on Sundays at the Harmony United Church Hall, Brenda and I joined two other couples in getting to know our dance side. At various times we were flowers, we reached for invisible walls and a few times Valdimir threw in a golf analogy which got me pumped up. The waltz is all about balance, rising and falling while you move across the floor, and trying not to step on your partner’s toes. When Valdimir does it, he glides. When Brenda and I do it, it’s more like walking through mud wearing snowshoes. Well, that was week one. We did improve. By the end of the lessons in week six, we were able to move from one side of the hall to the other fairly effortless- ly, with just a few mistakes. We are no Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, but we did get bet- ter. But between week one and six there were a lot of laughs, quizzical looks and blank expressions. When we snapped at each other for missing a step one of the other cou- ples noted we were finally getting the hang of the dance. Who knew you also had to be good at math to do the waltz? One-two- three, one-two- three, I would hear Vladimir repeat the count over and over. But it is the beat for the dance. A large move on one, a smaller step on two and collect your legs on three, then repeat. The steps were a bit more difficult for Bren- da as she had to remember the count, but do the steps backwards. Along the way we learned the small and big box step, chasse and a dip. It was those backward steps which caused the biggest embarrassment during the six weeks, when Vladimir approached me to show us a step. He wanted to show Brenda how it was done so he put his arms out and I was expected to grab them but my head lowered, I turned red and my hands dropped to my side. We did the step that way and Brenda didn’t stop laughing for days. By week six, as Vladimir walked to me, I grabbed him by the arms and away we went. The six weeks flew by and we looked forward to that one hour away from the kids every Sunday. We liked it so much we have signed up for the intermediate waltz lessons, which start Sunday. Now all we need is an empty dance floor to show what we have learned. With today’s hectic world revolving around deadlines and obligations, gardening allows us to escape from busy schedules, lower blood pressure and reduce stress. “Believe it or not, gardening is proven to be a great form of exercise, burning up to 300 calories per hour!” says Karen Webb, phys- iotherapist and author. “At the same time, all that watering, planting, raking, and weed- ing without proper preparation can increase susceptibility to muscle strain and injury.” To prevent gardening-related injuries, Webb recommends this approach: • Take breaks – Quite often, people spend hours focusing on the same activity and staying in the same awkward position with- out any breaks. Remember to move around every 15-20 minutes, take short walks and stretch. • Planning makes a difference – Alternate a diffi cult task with an easy one and keep your work in front of your body with your arms in your easy zone, between the level of your hips and shoulders, while moving with your work. • Manage your aches – to relieve muscle pain and soreness, consider taking an over- the-counter analgesic, like Tylenol Back Pain or Tylenol Muscle Aches & Body Pain. • Use props – There is no need to spend a lot of money on expensive equipment. Using a hot water bottle and foam pad when kneel- ing can help prevent knee injuries. A bucket turned upside down makes a great little stool for those extensive weeding sessions. SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND Monarchs advance to OFSAA semifinals BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- St. Mary baseball head coach Brian Chen said that pitching had plagued his ball club this season. Not so much that they didn’t have quality arms, it was just a matter of injuries contributing to the problem. Consider those problems solved. The pitching came through when the Mon- archs needed it most earlier this week at the OFSAA Prentice Cup East Regional, as the Pickering school earned one of two berths into next week’s OFSAA semifinals. They punched a ticket to the final four with an exclamation point, mercying last year’s provincial champi- ons from Birchmount Park 12-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Kinsmen Stadium in Oshawa to cap off a great two days. Rob Heard did it all for the Monarchs in the game against Birchmount Park, tossing a com- plete game and knocking in four runs at the plate. “He said to me, ‘Coach, I want the ball.’ I was actually thinking of pitching somebody else,” said Chen of a conversation with Heard before the final game. “He’s been our go to guy the past couple of years. He had been injured and I was worried about his arm, but he wanted the ball. “I discussed it with his parents, and they said, ‘How can you say no to him.’ He threw an incredible game. Just the intensity and passion on his face the entire game was incredible to watch.” St. Mary entered the East Regional as the number three seed, opening with a 14-3 victory over King City, as Graham Holland got the win on the mound. The next outing against Birch- mount Park wasn’t so successful, as St. Mary was blanked 8-0. The loss forced them to reel off three wins in a row to advance, which they did, beating St. Joseph’s (Cornwall) 4-1 behind the arm of Aaron Rabena, while Myles Phillips picked up the win in an 8-2 decision over Inn- isdale (Barrie). Those victories set up the one- game showdown with Birchmount Park. “When it was all over we were really happy,” said Chen. “We knew we had some really tough competition. Just to get through, the guys were really happy with themselves. “We knew this was a possibility and as the season progressed, the guys worked really hard toward it, hoping we would peak in and around playoff time and they did. It was some of the best baseball that they have played.” Sinclair from Whitby was the other team to qualify out of the East Regional. They will join St. Mary and the two West Regional qualifiers, Vin- cent Massey and St. Anne’s, both from Windsor. Tuesday’s semifinals at Connorvale Park in Eto- bicoke will feature a crossover format, with the number one seed in the West, Vincent Massey, playing the second seed from the East, St. Mary, while Sinclair (#1 East) will play St. Anne’s (#2 West). The winners will meet for gold and sil- ver on Wednesday, with the losers playing for bronze. Chen said that he isn’t familiar with Tuesday’s opponent, Vincent Massey, but that his team played St. Anne’s earlier this season at a tourna- ment hosted by Sinclair, losing 8-0. He also pointed out the 8-0 score was the same result his team had against Birchmount Park in the East Regional on Tuesday, but reversed the outcome with the 12-2 mercy the following day to advance.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • June 4, 201021 APSportsBrad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com facebook.com/sportsdurhamregion twitter.com/scnewsdurham CRICKET Ajax cricketers vie for RBC trophy AJAX -- Ajax cricketers will be busy in Scarborough on Saturday. Bring your vehicle into Diamond Shine to remove the salt and stains from winter and leave with it impeccably clean and shining! With over 15 years in the detailing business, Diamond Shine has earned a reputation for their high quality work and value pricing. Diamond Shine offers a package that fits every budget, from a wash starting at just $19.95 to complete detailing. A Diamond Shine car wash is nothing like the car washes you can drive through. The vehicle is hand washed, using high quality soap, and hand dried with a chamois to achieve a brilliant shine. The difference can be seen in the details! It’s called detailing for a reason. At Diamond Shine, their showroom package leaves no small space untouched. To achieve a showroom look, they use toothbrushes and Q-Tips to get to the hard to reach areas. They only use the best products, to ensure superior results. Interiors are vacuumed, shampooed and detailed. Don’t let dog hairs and spilled drinks spoil the interior of your vehicle! Bring it in to Diamond Shine to be cleaned and have your upholstery protected to keep it looking great all summer long. It’s also a great time to have your vehicle waxed and polished to protect it from the summer elements. Things are heating up, both outside and at Diamond Shine. Many people are taking advantage of the nice weather and bringing their vehicles in. To avoid disappointment, make sure you call to book your appointment today! “We want to thank everyone for putting their trust in us for the past 15 years, including both our loyal customers and the many dealers in the area,” says Joanne. Oshawa, ON MOBILE SHOWROOM Readers’ Choice Winner FOOTBALL Another win for senior Dolphins DURHAM -- On a beautiful Sunday evening, the Ajax- Pickering Dolphins Sr. Var- sity OMFL team improved its record to 2-0 by beating the visiting Orangeville Outlaws by a score of 28-7. Brad MacMillan rushed for the first touchdown to open the scoring, while another rushing TD followed from D’Shane Chung. Both con- verts came from the foot of Adam Konkle and gave the Dolphins a 14-0 halftime lead. The most exciting play of the game came in the second half when quarterback Cur- tis Inniss passed to Roynelle Meredith for a 70+ yard catch and run for the Dolphins’ third TD of the game. The final touchdown came as a result of a running play by Tristan Clough. The tough Dolphins defence held the Outlaws to only seven points by pres- suring their quarterback all evening which resulted in numerous turnovers. These included interceptions by Darryl Lindsay, Jevon Bryan, Taylor Eskins and Brandon Misseri. The Dolphins were play- ing in what was the last of seven home-opening games played over the weekend at their home field, Kinsmen Park. The Dolphins were vic- torious in five of the seven games. Next home game for the Dolphins is Saturday, June 12 at 7 p.m. against the Steel City Steelers from Hamilton. PHOTO BY PETER REDMAN Eyeing one up AJAX-- Pickering Pirates Mike Minarik fouled off this pitch during the second game of the Ontario Senior Select Baseball doubleheader against the Ajax Indians on Saturday. Pickering won both games of a doubleheader 5-3 and 4-1. All Stars face Western at Showcase TORONTO -- The OUA All- Stars hung on to defeat the 2009 OUA champion West- ern Mustangs 4-3 in a 10- inning contest at the fourth annual OUA Baseball Show- case last weekend at Rogers Centre in Toronto. And a couple of Pickering players figured into the out- come. Brock University centre fielder Matt Marinelli of Pickering plated the win- ning run for the all-stars in the top of the 10th, scor- ing on a throwing error by pitcher Paul Lytwynec. Lytwynec had tried to throw out Marinelli at third base after a bunt by Laurier catcher Chris Pittaway, but the wild throw allowed the run. Brock reliever Matt Mar- tinow was credited with the win, after pitching two innings, while Lytwynec, Western’s eighth pitcher of the game, was charged with the loss. Western early pitch- ing was right on the mark though as they took a no- hitter into the sixth inning on the combined efforts of three pitchers, including Pickering’s Andrew Berg- man, who started the game and tossed two hitless innings. In his two innings Berg- man struck out four batters, including all three in the second.
