In their first attempt to get the entire city reading the same book this summer, library staff chose Old City Hall by Canadian crimi- nal lawyer Robert Rotenberg. “It’s an amazing book,” Ms. Draper said of the novel chosen for the library’s One Book, One City program. Library staff considered about 100 different books, Ms. Draper said, adding staff wanted a novel that was multi-cultural and didn’t have too much violence or swearing. And since it takes place in Toronto, many of the landmarks are familiar to Pickering residents. Staff agreed on Old City Hall, the story of a host of a national Canadian talk show who stands accused of murdering his wife. After whispering, “I killed her,” to the paper deliv- ery man, he says nothing to anyone for the rest of the book, including his lawyer. A seem- ingly open-and-shut case ends up becoming a full-blown murder investigation. “It’s the type of book where when you start reading you don’t really want to put it down to eat, sleep or go to work,” Ms. Draper said. While the idea of One Book, One City is not new, the choice of book is different from what Ms. Draper has come across. Upon research- ing other adult reading programs across CELIA KLEMENZ / METROLAND PICKERING -- Bev Donaldson, left, and Christy Harper, staff members of the Pickering Public Library, read an exciting passage from Robert Rotenburg’s ‘Old City Hall,’ a murder mys- tery. The novel was chosen as Pickering’s One Book, One City selection. WEATHER Expect summer to be hot and dry in Durham Early week temps ‘almost a dozen degrees warmer than normal,’ says climatologist JENNIFER STONE jstone@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- With temperatures soaring to almost a dozen degrees warmer than normal at the tail end of the long Victo- ria Day weekend and into this week, it would be tempting to hope this is Moth- er Nature’s dress rehearsal for summer. But is it really a sign of things to come? “It may be,” Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said. Models are currently calling for a warmer, drier summer than the last cou- ple have been, Mr. Phillips said. While warm temperatures in May aren’t unheard of, the duration of what Mr. Phillips is calling the recent “heat bubble” is unusual. “Often this kind of weather happens a day or two in a row,” he said. For it to last four or five days at this time of year is not the norm. “May is that fickle month -- you can go from winter to summer” very quickly, Mr. Phillips said. The combination of relatively good air quality, which might be compromised in the more traditional summer months, and cool-down at night make it “more bearable,” Mr. Phillips said. For exam- ple, while temperatures were in the high 20Cs Monday, overnight it dropped to 14C. “That allows us to build our stamina” to face another hot day, Mr. Phillips said. A relatively warm winter combined with a warmer than usual spring means some spring growth is as much as three weeks advanced, Mr. Phillips said. Late-week temperatures are expect- ed to drop somewhat but remain high- er than normal, in the mid-20s, as a new air mass moves in, he noted. There is the possibility of rain later in the week. If weather follows the models for the predicted warmer and drier than normal summer, it would be most welcome by some, Mr. Phillips said. “We’ve had a couple of not-so-great summers,” he said. “For drinking beer and patios .. this probably will be that kind of summer.” JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND AJAX -- Keith and Winnie Wong enjoyed the hot weather by rolling alonga the Waterfront Trail in Ajax. Hospital auxiliary hosts celebratory Ontario conference BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX -- A look into a room full of hospital volunteers may have had people wondering which century they were in. The Hospital Auxiliaries Associa- tion of Ontario turned 100 this year, and the Auxiliary to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital host- ed the celebration at Carruthers Creek Golf and Country Club in Ajax recently. “We decorated it with balloons as if it was a big birthday party,” said Bev Carmichael, Ajax-Pickering hospital auxiliary president. “Some of the ladies wore costumes that date back to 100 years ago.” The local hospital auxiliary was established in 1951, a year ahead of the hospital. “The auxiliary was here first and the hospital was built around them,” said Tracy Paterson, vice president of development for the Rouge Valley Health System Foun- dation. Back then, volunteers would help out the hospital in a number of ways, such as driving patients around when they needed rides. “They even did the laundry for the hospital,” Ms. Paterson said. And of course, the women knit- ted toques and little items of cloth- ing for each newborn, as they still do today. “Every new baby in Ajax-Pickering and every baby that’s been born in the past 40-some-odd years or 50 have gone home with homemade clothing,” Ms. Carmichael said. And some original members are still members today. “Three of them are very much running around our hospital every month,” Ms. Carmichael said, adding those who can’t easily get around at least knit and do what they can from home. The current president moved to Ajax in 1962 and became a mem- ber of the auxiliary in 1971. “I guess I got addicted to it and here I am all these years later,” she said. Now the auxiliary has 191 adult and 50 student volunteers. Mem- bers work every day at fundraising and keeping the public informed and at ease while at the hospital. “They’re the first faces that you see (in the hospital),” Ms. Paterson said. The auxiliary also provides bur- saries to local students who plan to pursue the medical field in post secondary education. The auxiliary also raises money for the hospital at its 4477 Nearly New Shop, at its hospital gift shop, hospital equipment lottery ticket booth and special events such as book sales, bake sales and, new this year, a wine tasting. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 28, 20104 AP 503 Kingston Rd, Pickering 905.420.9700 Pickering Volkswagen Inc. GET ALL THE LATEST 2010 MUNICIPAL ELECTION NEWS ONLINE>>COMMUNITY Celebrating Ajax-Pickering hospital volunteers Pickering residents go to Queen’s Park Locals set out demands for Big Pipe PICKERING -- Although the Pro- vincial government has approved the environmental assessment for the ‘Big Pipe’, concerned Pickering residents, councillors and environ- mental experts aren’t ready to back down. The expansion of the York-Dur- ham Sanitary Sewer was approved by the Ministry of the Environment in April despite strong public out- cry. The pipe takes 90 per cent of York Region’s waste water to the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Con- trol Plant in Pickering for treatment. York wants to expand the pipe to accommodate the region’s popula- tion. Jim Robb, a volunteer with the Rouge Duffins Greenspace Coali- tion, Devi Gopalan of Pickering community group Stop the Stink, and Ward 1 Regional Councillor Bonnie Littley were among those at a Thursday press conference at Queen’s Park demanding that the Province either withdraw approv- al of the pipe expansion, or at least impose stricter conditions than the ones already set out by the minis- try when it was approved in April. The trees were purchased as part of a charitable fund- raising drive that involved Ontario Ministry of Govern- ment Services staff. Rath- er than donating money to charity, the employees want- ed to make a lasting contri- bution to Ontario’s natural environment. The Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade environment task force, as adopters of Lynn Heights Park, joined the students and members of council along with City of Pickering staff to plant the trees. Task force member Neil Samson stressed the importance of engaging young people in environ- mental initiatives. “They are the future,” he said. “If we don’t get the seeds in their heads of what to do, we’ll be in bad shape in 50 years.” Mayor Dave Ryan said the planting is an example of the City’s plans to provide a natural tree canopy for the municipality, and called it a “learning experience” for the students and a “reaffir- mation” in Pickering’s com- mitment to the community. Ward 2 Regional Council- lor Bill McLean had similar thoughts. “It really gives the kids an opportunity to take owner- ship of the park,” he said. India, Mackenzie and Lau- ren had a good grasp on that sentiment. “I think it’ll really help our community, and help us become closer as a commu- nity,” India said. India is a member of the school’s eco team, which has a number of duties such as ensuring lights and com- puters are off when they’re not needed. City coordinator of envi- ronmental awareness pro- grams Michelle Pongracz and Arnold Mostert, a City landscape architect, took ownership of the project on the City’s end. They chose to include Maple Ridge because of its close proxim- ity to the park, and the fact that a number of the stu- dents live nearby. This can encourage them to get more involved and take pride in the environ- mental work they do, Ms. Pongracz said. SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND AJAX -- Matt Wilkins and Chad Robbins, Grade 7 students at Maple Ridge Public School, worked alongside Dave Stell, communications specialist with the Ajax- Pickering Board of Trade, planting trees at Lynn Heights Park, part of an initiative with the City of Pickering. Some families continue to cope with job loss, the lingering casualties of the Great Recession. Others work two or more part-time jobs to make ends meet. Still others face the prospect of exhausted unem- ployment benefits and a job market still recovering from the downturn of 2008. Youth in Durham, many of whom lived through difficult times due to par- ents losing established, long-service jobs and are now on the cusp of adult- hood themselves, are especially vulner- able to currents that push society in one direction or another. To address the issues facing youth, to provide a beacon of hope and opti- mism, Canadian Autoworkers Local 222 officials are inviting youth from across Durham Region to their Our Youth, Our Future event featuring inspirational keynote speaker and Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo and Oshawa’s own Dan Carter. If anyone has discovered the secret to finding and sustaining hope in the dark- est of times, it is Mr. Chuvalo. He lost two children to drug overdos- es and one to suicide. His wife, too, took her own life after the death of her sec- ond son. Since then, Mr. Chuvalo has emerged as a powerful and credible speaker who has inspired thousands of young people across Canada. His story of courage and determina- tion that grew from the most difficult of personal challenges is awe-inspiring. Mr. Carter, too, has grown into a suc- cessful local media personality and has shared his story of personal conflict and growth with young people. Together, the two will bring a powerful and timely message to youth across the region and provide insight into the chal- lenges they faced, the road they trav- elled and the tools they used to reclaim their lives. The event’s focus is on youth, but the message should resonate with every- one. We encourage anyone who can take a couple of hours next Wednesday to attend this free event at the General Motors Centre. The times we live in pose many chal- lenges, but armed with tools to cope, a fresh perspective and the inspiring story and message of Messrs. Chuvalo and Carter, residents will benefit from a couple of hours of exceptional insight. Make the time next Wednesday at 11 a.m. and join fellow residents for a cou- ple of hours to develop a new perspec- tive. - Metroland Durham Region Media Group With so much information available online about our friends and family, it almost seems like privacy is passe these days. But the ongoing controversy about privacy settings on Facebook proves that’s not quite the case and the public is still concerned about who has access to see their informa- tion, posts and photos. Facebook has more than 400 million users worldwide, making it the number one social networking site in the world. Last year, it came under heavy criticism from Canada’s Privacy Commissioner when an investiga- tion into complaints found the site didn’t sufficiently protect users’ privacy. In the wake of the widespread criticism, this week Facebook launched new privacy options. Given that many of us share our lives on Facebook, it’s well worth it to take a look and see just who has access to our information. I briefly checked out the new privacy inter- face and it seems much simpler to use than what was there before, which was frankly a headache to wade through. Parents who aren’t on Facebook should speak to kids and teens because they most certainly are on the social networking site. Often they’ll be sharing a lot more informa- tion with the public than their parents would be comfortable with and going through their privacy settings with them could pre- vent future problems, such as cyber bully- ing. However, controlling who sees your posts, photos and groups membership has always been just one aspect of the Facebook pri- vacy controversy. The other issue is the use of personal information by third party com- panies, either because Facebook sold them the information or because users allowed apps to gather that information. It’s important to remember that Facebook and apps such as Farmville and Mafia Wars have business models based on gathering user information and using that informa- tion to target people for advertising. The problem has always been how little control people had over this aspect of priva- cy and it seems like the changes will make it easier to block apps from getting at your information. For now, we’ll have to wait and see if the changes are enough to satisfy users and privacy watchdogs, including the Privacy Commissioner. Locally, there was a cautionary tale this week regarding privacy as well. Durham police arrested five people last week while conducting a child porn sweep. Four peo- ple were charged, but a fifth person was released after police determined someone else was using his unsecured wireless con- nection to download child porn. Unsecured wireless networks can be found in every neighbourhood in Durham and it takes just a few minutes to secure them. It’s time well spent. The Central library has about 40 copies, but any of the local branches can order them in for resi- dents using the specific location. The library also has large-print copies and the book can be down- loaded to iPods. “As demand goes up, we’ll get more copies,” Ms. Draper said. A couple of book clubs will discuss the novel and the library plans a larger discussion on the book in September. But the main idea is to get city residents reading and discussing the novel on their own. For example, Ms. Drap- er hopes strangers will notice one another read- ing Old City Hall on the bus or train and talk about it. “It’s sort of a communi- ty-building exercise,” said Ms. Draper. Those reading the book are encouraged to reg- ister for One Book, One City online or by phone for a chance to win prizes throughout the summer. Mechanical malfunction caused boat to fill with water off the coast of Port Hope BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com PORT HOPE -- An Ajax councillor and his partner were rescued by the Coast Guard last Sunday after his boat began taking on water off the coast of Port Hope. Ward 1 Councillor Shaun Collier and his fiancee Cindy Hosking had planned to spend three days on Lake Ontar- io over the long weekend on a classic 45-foot Chris- Craft boat. The couple was about two kilometres off the coast of Port Hope on Sunday afternoon when problems developed. The boat has two power- ful motors that are cooled by lakewater pumped through the motor. How- ever, a burst pipe stopped the process in one of the motors. “I guess my right hand, starboard, motor had been pumping hundreds of gal- lons of water into my boat without us knowing it,” he said. When the boat stopped and the bow came down, it redistributed the water that had been pooling at the back of the boat. “The boat tipped to the left and that was the first indication we had that there was a problem,” he said. He opened the hatch to peer into the cabin and found water everywhere. The engine was half under water. “I yelled at Cindy, we gotta get off.” Coun. Collier sent out a mayday call via the boat’s radio, grabbed his cell- phone and he and Ms. Hosking moved to an inflated dinghy the boat had been towing. The cou- ple also called 911. “It’s so scary, you’re run- ning on pure adrenaline at that point,” he said. “The water is eight degrees, you know not to get wet.” Twenty-three minutes later, the Coast Guard arrived. They used power- ful pumps to get the water out so the boat could be towed to Cobourg where eventually a crane had to be used to lift it out of the water. “I gotta really commend the Coast Guard, they’re really amazing. I cannot believe how professional they are and how they got the job done quickly,” said Coun. Collier. He’s not sure wheth- er the boat can be saved because the water mixed with oil from the engine, causing significant dam- age to the interior, and the electrical systems were damaged as well. Prior to what he called a fluke incident, Coun. Col- lier had spent four years restoring the 1960s classic boat. “I love boating,” he said. “It’s not going to put me off boating, but I’m quite certain I won’t be back in the boat this season.” durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 28, 201011 AP PRE-CONSTRUCTIONPUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE Rosebank Sanitary Sewage Pumping Station, City of Pickering The Regional Municipality of Durham Works Department 605 Rossland Rd. Ajax girl licks leukemia and now looks forward to helping others PAUL IRISH newsroom@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Jessica Theocharides is dancing the dance of life. The 13-year-old Ajax girl spent five months at SickKids battling leukemia and, with the disease now in remission, she was eager to pick up where she left off. “It was awesome,” says Jessica, who entered the hospital last September and was dis- charged on her birthday, Feb. 18. “I got to go back with my family ,.. I saw my friends and it was so great to be with my dog.” She’ll be heading back to school soon but, best of all, she’s returning to her first love: dancing. A member of Cynthia’s Creative Dance Arts in Pickering, Jessica has been involved with her passion since age three, dancing com- petitively most of her life. And she could be back on stage, in a small way, as early as May 30 in a fundraiser for SickKids. “She’s been doing strengthening and stretching already,” says her mother, Lori. “She won’t be doing anything that will get her rundown.” Life is finally getting back to normal in the Theocharides home, a complete antithesis to the past fall and winter. “It was just so surrealistic; I couldn’t believe it,” Jessica’s mother says, as she recalls the events leading up to her daughter’s diagno- sis. “It all happened so fast.” On Sept. 17, Jessica had a gushing nose- bleed that took five minutes to stop, but she didn’t feel ill. The next day, she went to a walk-in clinic to check out a rash covering part of her body. But the doctor knew it was more than a skin disorder. “He said it was bruising, that Jessica’s blood was not coagulating, that she needed a blood test and that she had to get to a hospital,” says her mother. “It was urgent.” The local hospital made the initial diagno- sis and Jessica was taken by ambulance to SickKids at 1:30 a.m. the next day. It was her mother who told her daughter it was leukemia, and they both broke into tears and hugged each other when the words were spoken. The final diagnosis at SickKids was acute myeloid leukemia, a more aggressive form of the disease, found mainly in adults. It was deemed best for Jessica that she remain in the hospital where she could be watched around the clock. “I knew I was sick, but I really didn’t know much about it at the beginning,” says Jessica, with a bit of a grin. “But I did know that I was going to carry on with my life.” After four rounds of chemotherapy -- the first one sending the leukemia into remis- sion -- Jessica settled into her new environ- ment. It was difficult, as it would be for any child. At one point, she was so lonely she begged her family to bring her dog, named Friday, so she could hold him. The visit was arranged and there was a quick but happy reunion in the hospital’s underground garage. “Everyone at SickKids was great,” she says. “The best part was being able to talk to oth- ers, just like me.” She met three girls, all in the same age range with the same cancer, who have now become friends and will be forever. “We talked about school, we talked about what we wanted to be when we got older,” she says. “We compared what was happening to each of us ... we helped each other.” SickKids has a lounge and games room for older patients, but it’s not open around the clock. So hospital staff created a small make- shift TV room where the three girls could relax and chat, instead of their usual spot at the end of a hall. Jessica is shifting comfortably to life at home. She enjoys the support of family and friends, including her 10-year-old sister, Amy, who has been deemed a perfect bone marrow match if one is ever needed. The young dancer says she’s still ponder- ing her future. But she wants to use her expe- rience “for the good” of others, and is consid- ering fundraising for the hospital and other causes when she gets totally back on her feet. (formality Manville) was established in 1975 in Scarborough Ont. During the fi rst few years our main focus was with residential siding, soffi t, fascia and eaves trough installations on new homes for builders. These relationships continue to this day. As the company grew, we began to get involved with more renovation installations as well as Government renovation projects. Along with our expansion into the renovation sector our product lines also increased. As demand for professional renovations grew so did our focus. Because of our association and experience with new construction builders a natural transition evolved where we developed relationships with Home Im- provement retailers. Although we have always dealt with the general public, we were quite comfortable being the “professional installers” working on their behalf. As we entered the new millennium our efforts ex- panded in both the new construction sector and reno- vation market. We have also begun to increase our ef- forts in “direct to home-owner” sales and installations and continue to offer superior products and installa- tions. Manalco (Manville) is a wholly owned Canadian company, based in Pickering and staffed by profes- sionals from within the industry. We serve the Greater Toronto Area reaching from Port Hope to the east, Hamilton to the west and Newmarket to the north. We are fully licensed and insured as well as long-time members of local Home Builders Associations. Many of our staff carry specifi c licenses or certifi cates in re- lation to products we handle and areas we service. Some of our long term supplier relationships include Gentek Aluminum products [formerly Alcan - Autho- rized Premium Renovator - Gold Status], Mitten Vinyl Siding [multiple winner of “Awards of Distinction” applications] and Amarr Garage Doors [Authorized Gold Dealer]. And young people and experi- enced art aficionados alike will find plenty to keep them occupied at the free Artfest on the Esplanade in Pickering on May 29 and the Ajax Festival of the Arts, May 29 to June 4 in Ajax. Cathy Schnippering, president of the PineRidge Arts Council, which with the City of Pickering puts on Artfest, says more than 80 artists from across Durham and beyond are participating. “This time for the first time we have a selection committee between PRAC and the City to make sure the quality of the work that’s shown there is of a high stan- dard,” she says. “We also like to make sure that it’s original work and Canadian made.” Youngsters can try and duplicate, or put a fresh spin on, Andreas Dremters’s The Pickering Pioneer Family sculpture at City Hall with guidance from Oshawa artist Jan- ice McHaffie, who is once again working in the Hands On Art area. “We set our tables right in front of the sculpture and the kids sculpt with Plasticine and try to copy that,” says Ms. Schnippering. In addition to the art and fun for the kids, there’s entertainment courtesy of the Pickering Commu- nity Concert band, the Eastside Harmony Chorus, the Denise Les- ter Dance Academy and the Tamil Cultural and Academic Society of Durham Region. Artfest on the Esplanade is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Esplanade Park, between Valley Farm and Glenan- na roads, just north of Hwy. 401. The Ajax Festival of the Arts fea- tures a variety of activities for kids. The event kicks off on May 29 with the Kre8ive Kids Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Town Hall and the Main Branch library. In addition to face painting and a demonstration of graffiti art, there’s an Anime Workshop at 10 a.m. for those 12 years and older (pre-reg- istration required, call 905-683- 4000, ext. 8813). Young people ages seven years and up can also take part in The Director’s Cut Comic Relief, making their own comic book from 10 a.m. to noon or 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. “They start off with digital cam- eras, take photos, download them and start editing and adding words and pictures to create a comic book,” says Lisa Warth, the Town of Ajax’s festival and event coordina- tor. Pre-register by e-mailing sheena. beckles@townofajax.com. Kids can also hop aboard the Messy Hands Bus for some artsy fun. “It’s a really cool bus that we’re going to bring into Heritage Square and the kids board the bus to do their activities,” Warth says. Roughly 20 artists and artisans are showing their work outdoors, a first for the festival, in Memo- rial Park on May 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. From 1 to 3 p.m., Jersey Nights, a tribute to the Jersey Boys, takes the stage. Also a first this year is a licensed beer and wine gar- den. The festival also features an Ajax Creative Arts open house from noon to 4 p.m. June 2 and 3 at the Village Community Centre, 22 Sherwood Rd. W. The week wraps up with an Aboriginal Art Celebration on June 4 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Cultural Expressions Art Gallery, 62 Old Kingston Rd. To see the full line-up of events at the festivals, visit www.cityofpick- ering.com or www.townofajax. com/Page2572.aspx. RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND LIVE MUSIC A wee bit of Scotland in Durham OSHAWA -- It pays to have con- nections. And in the case of two concerts in Oshawa, the benefi- ciaries are many. Elizabeth and Sandy Crosbie, Oshawa Optimist Club mem- bers, have been tight with The Alexander Brothers for decades. And they’re bringing the world- famous brothers, Tom and Jack, to Oshawa for two concerts. The Brothers are marking 51 years in show biz and have per- formed all over the world. The shows are May 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Lviv Hall, 38 Lviv Blvd., and May 30 at 2 p.m. at Trillium Trails Centre, 53 Snow Ridge Court. Tickets are $29.99 each and $25 for seniors. The cost includes a light lunch. Tickets are available online at ticketweb.ca or www.osha- waoptimist.ca, by calling 1-888- 222-6608, or at But’N’Ben Scot- tish Bakery, 619 Kingston Rd., Pickering. All landscaping professionals will tell you that attractive borders are an important aspect in the overall look of any garden. A pathway or alley will always have a more finished look if surrounded by a border. As a general rule, a border should blend into the decor in order to somehow forget the presence of the pathway. The best way to achieve this result is to use plants... such as boxwood, lavender or santolina. There are also many different types of ground cover which help us to lose all notion of the con- tours of a path, which is certainly not the case when using the black plastic border edging available on the market. As far as possible, use products which will enable you to give a natural look to your garden. You’ve certainly never seen naturally growing plastic edging! So, if you don’t want to use this type of material, how about stones collected from a neighbouring field or rustic paving stones. Manufacturers have succeeded in producing appealing products which don’t have that annoying artificial look. Take the time to shop around and, at the same time, why not look for ideas in other people’s gardens? You’ll be surprised to realize just how creative some home owners are in this respect. Make the most of their experience by asking for their advice. It’s sometimes quite surprising to see what beautiful borders can be created with the use of inert materials. Don’t forget the importance of borders! Get better performance with Triple Pane Windows and pay for Double Pane Ajax-Pickering hosts Brooklin in Major Series Lacrosse opener BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Anxious to show what they can do on the lacrosse floor, the Ajax-Pickering Rock have shown that if baseball was their sport of choice, they could hit a curve ball. One was thrown at them on Thursday morning when it was announced that the Barrie Lakeshores would suspend opera- tions for this season in Major Series Lacrosse play. Barrie was scheduled to host the Brooklin Red- men on Thursday night, and then serve as guests for the Rock’s inaugu- ral game in the loop on Sunday night at the Ajax Community Centre. Instead of cancelling Sunday’s game and delaying the home opener, the Redmen will be filling the void, set to face the Rock at 8 p.m. “We knew this might be the case,” said Rock GM Paul St. John of the sudden departure of Barrie. “It didn’t catch us off guard. I didn’t think they would fold, but suspend operations for now. I’m not surprised by this at all.” Sunday’s season opener will be the culmination of a lot of work for the franchise, not just in assembling a team after making the jump from Sr. B, but also the lengthy process in get- ting a roster together through a junior draft, league dispersal draft of St. Regis players, league expan- sion draft, trades and an open tryout during training camp. How all of the work will be received by the community in terms of support will be unveiled Sunday. “There’s a lot of people talking about it, but to be very hon- est, I don’t know what to expect,” says St. John of the recep- tion his team will get. “Are we going to have 300 to 400 people, or are we going to have 30 to 40 people? I’m hoping that this community embraces it and supports it. “The major level is such a great game. It’s totally different than Senior B lacrosse. This is all the best players in the world playing.” True, the league carries marquee names like John Grant Jr., Colin Doyle and Josh Sanderson, but none of those type play- ers will be on the Rock roster. Not yet anyway. Gaining respect and developing the next wave of players with that kind of rec- ognition will take time. “You’re not given a whole bunch of talented players. They are talented in their own right, but they are not the top players in the league. But we’re pretty excit- ed about what we’ve seen so far,” says Rock coach Jim Veltman, who is one of the most recognizable names in lacrosse. “We like the enthusiasm and ener- gy these guys have and their willing- ness to learn, so I’m very optimistic that way. These are guys who real- ly want to take it to the next level and this is their opportunity to do it. I think everyone is excited about that opportunity. As a coach, I don’t think you could ask for more.” Veltman knows what it takes to win a Mann Cup, emblematic of the best senior lacrosse team in the country, having won multiple times with Brampton. He has also won NLL titles with the Buffalo Bandits and Toronto Rock. Even with those accolades on his resumé, Sunday’s season opener has him excited. “I can’t wait to get it started,” he says. “We’ve been going at it for quite awhile now, so we’re anxious to show what we can do on the floor instead of just in practice.” In addition to the Rock and Brooklin, the league is com- prised of Brampton, Peterborough, Six Nations and Kitchen- er-Waterloo.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 28, 201025 APSportsBrad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com facebook.com/sportsdurhamregion twitter.com/scnewsdurham FOR THOSE ABOUT TO 2010 Schedule Home Sunday, May 30 Brooklin Redmen 8 p.m. Friday, June 4 Brooklin Redmen 8 p.m. Friday, June 11 Six Nations Chiefs 8 p.m. Friday, June 18 Peterborough Lakers 8 p.m. Friday, June 25 Brampton Excelsiors 8 p.m. Sunday, June 27 Six Nations Chiefs 3 p.m. Friday, July 9 Peterborough Lakers 8 p.m. Friday, July 16 Kitchener Kodiaks 8 p.m. Away Thursday, June 10 Brampton Excelsiors 8 p.m. Monday, June 21 Brooklin Redmen 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 22 Six Nations Chiefs 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 6 Kitchener Kodiaks 8 p.m. Thursday, July 8 Peterborough Lakers 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 13 Kitchener Kodiaks 8 p.m. Wed., July 21 Brooklin Redmen 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22 Brampton Excelsiors 8 p.m. ROCK RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND DURHAM -- Members of this year’s Ajax-Pickering Rock include, clockwise from top left: Jordan Coffey, Bill McLean, Bryan Johnson, Ian Harloff and Jonas Derks. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 28, 201026 AP Friday, May 28, 2010 Ajax & Pickering Locations Flyers in Today’s Paper If you did not receive your News Advertiser/fl yers OR you are interested in a paper route call Circulation at 905-683-5117. Football teams anxious to play on home field DURHAM -- It’s opening weekend for a number of Ajax-Pickering Dolphins football teams. The Dolphins will be welcom- ing Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan to its opening day festivities. The mayor will be present for the Dol- phins Saturday game at 4 p.m. when the OVFL Peewee entry will face the Brantford Bisons. Deputy Mayor Rick Johnson will perform the coin toss at the 4 p.m. game on Sunday, when the Dolphins OMFL Bantam team takes on the Niagara Storm. A fun-filled weekend is planned for all including performances by the Dolphins’ cheerleaders at all games, the introduction of the club’s new mascot Blitz and spe- cial live performances of O Can- ada. There will also be draws and giveaways. The football club’s famous barbecue, including the ‘Wally Burger’ will also be avail- able. A total of seven games are sched- uled for this weekend, including the home season opener which will feature the Dolphins Junior OMFL entry taking on their Dur- ham cousins, the Clarington Tigercats, who are coached by for- mer Dolphins coach Chris Bruce. This game will take place Friday night at 8:15. In addition to the games already mentioned, the Dolphins Senior OV team will take on the Etobi- coke Eagles at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the Junior OV team will take on Newmarket at 7 p.m. Sunday’s other two games feature the club’s two other OMFL entries playing, with the Peewee team kicking off its season against the TNT Express at 1 p.m. and the Seniors facing the Orangeville Outlaws at 7 p.m. All games take place at the Dol- phins’ home field at Kinsmen Park in Pickering, at the foot of Sandy Beach Road. SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND Getting after it OSHAWA -- St. Mary’s Sean Power scrambled for a loose ball during LOSSA field lacrosse action at R.S. McLaughlin in Oshawa recently. FOOTBALL Ajax-Pickering Dolphins plan opening weekend festivities DRESSAGE International horses and riders coming to WindReach BRENT BURRY newsroom@durhamregion.com ASHBURN -- The WindReach Inter- national Para-Dressage competi- tion is fast approaching, as riders will begin their quest to qualify for the 2010 world equestrian games on May 28. This is the only competition left in North America to qualify for the games and it take places at Wind- Reach Farm in Ashburn May 28- 30. Elizabeth Quigg-Robinson, team manager for Canada, says there are 17 horses and 15 Canadian riders for this event. Only seven can qual- ify for the games. Among the Cana- dian riders who will be at the event is 2008 Paralympic gold and silver medallist Lauren Barwick. “In this one, Australia and the United States would be our stron- gest competition. Australia will probably be all using borrowed horses, which is a little bit of a prob- lem (for them),“ says Quigg-Robin- son. “We’re on home ground with our own horses, it certainly is (an advantage for Canada).” There will be riders representing Australia, Bermuda, Ireland, Japan, Venezuela, Mexico and the United States at the event. In order to help ensure the Cana- dian riders do well in competition, Alice Beatty will be there to look after some of the horses as chief groom. “Part of my philosophy is as a groom, because I’ve groomed for many different riders all over the world in different countries and different disciplines, when you’re at that high level in competition, the rider really needs to focus on pre- paring mentally, physically prepar- ing themselves. They don’t need to be in the barn wasting energy with their horse. That’s what grooms are for,” says Beatty. WindReach Farm, which opened in 1989, offers wheelchair accessi- ble pathways, buildings and barns. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 28, 201027 AP ! PICKERINGADVERTISING FEATUREDurham Windows and Doors Brings Mobile Showroom To Your Door Wayne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door business a new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wayne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. For more information call (905) 579-2222 or 1-888- 576-8575.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 28, 201031 P 10 YEAR WARRANTY!
