It real- ly is like a moment out of time,” said Tricia McCallum, one of the many volunteers who helps put on the annual event. Whitevale on a regular day boasts a river that runs through the village, a trail to walk or hike on, an old mill, beautiful nature and a ton of history. “It just has all sorts of features that really don’t exist anymore,” Ms. McCallum said. COMMUNITY APPRECIATION BBQ SUNDAY MAY 30 12 - 3 www.arthurs.ca E: wayne@arthurs.ca invited to enjoy the beauty of the village in the valley that’s stood the test of time. “Whitevale survived through so many changes and transitions and remains the village for the most part that it was,” Ms. McCallum said, adding a garbage dump was a certain threat the village fought off. Not only can visitors enjoy the treasure of Whitevale, but many events and attrac- tions villagers look forward to each year. “People really like it,” Ms. McCallum said. “A lot of people come from the city.” The festival will include a caravan that sells ice cream, old-fashioned games, such as tug of war and sack races, in the park for kids and families, a book sale, a bake sale, a tea garden, a beer tent and a barbecue. The festival will also have artisans and live local music throughout the afternoon in the park, and the church will feature a jumping castle, face-painting and souvla- ki. There will also be farmyard animals and sheep-shearing at the cedar-rail corral. There will be garage sales, including the “gargantuan” one put on by Whitevale’s Relay for Life team, The Witches of White- vale. All proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society event the team is partici- pating in this June. “There’s a ton of stuff and probably some real deals,” Ms. McCallum said. “And it all goes to cancer. Everybody pitches in in the village.” Items will include: new fire alarms, a dog grooming kit, hand showers, a Whirl- pool self-cleaning oven with a ceramic top, wooden shelving, a variety of laundry tub sinks, four bar stools and household items from china to candles. The festival will take place in the heart of Whitevale, which is on Whitevale Road, east of Altona Road. There will be signs for certain attractions, but Ms. McCallum says don’t be shy; ask anybody around for direc- tions. “If people want to know where anything is, everybody knows,” she said. There’s no entry fee to the festival. The garage sales start at 9 a.m. Everything else starts at noon. The campaign allowed residents to pay for their parking tickets with toy and food donations equal to or exceeding the amount issued in the tick- et. In 2009, 75 tickets were paid via toy and food donations that went to char- ity, and the total value of donations was $2,162. The collection went to the Dur- ham Police Food and Toy Drive, and the plan is to do the same this year. This year, the City will offer the same promotion on Dec. 16 and 17, pending council approval. The executive committee approved the plans Monday without debate and it will go to council for final approval Monday. The bylaw would prohibit and regulate public nuisances such as: knocking over or damaging mailboxes, newspaper boxes, recycling boxes, garbage bins and signs, and urinating, defecating, spitting or vom- iting in public places. The committee believed the ideology is good, but questioned if it will be taken too literally. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean agreed with the infractions, but found ensuring the laws are enforced could be a problem. Coun. McLean and Ward 1 City Council- lor Jennifer O’Connell questioned the part that states vomiting in public due to intox- ication is up for ticketing. “How can our bylaw officers really determine if someone is vomiting because of being intoxicated?” she said. Kim Thompson, manager of bylaw ser- vices, said Durham Regional Police would issue a ticket to the culprit, and the City prosecutor would attend the court pro- ceeding if it was necessary. Coun. O’Connell also asked how strict they’ll be on the issues. While she frowns upon spitting, she said it’s only a reality that such behaviour will arise in sports. “A lot of enforcement isn’t laying charg- es,” Ms. Tompson said, adding it’s more to let residents know what’s acceptable in the community and what isn’t. Mayor Dave Ryan said the committee’s concern is for unintended outcomes of the bylaw. “In today’s world if you’re going to codify something, then you’re going to have to live by it,” he said. Coun. Littley said she understands the concerns, but hopes there is room for judg- ment with the City’s bylaw officers. The committee chose to refer the item to staff for more clarification, and it will come back to council for approval in June. CITY HALL Nuisance bylaw a pain for Pickering councillors durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 14, 20104 P Firearms bylaw back to staff for more work BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It’s time hunting is seen as a resource, not a problem, says a local hunt- er and lawyer. A number of hunters and farmers attend- ed Monday’s executive committee meet- ing to contest a proposed updated firearms bylaw. “I don’t really see the reasoning behind the bylaw changes here,” said longtime Pickering hunter and lawyer Anthony Balka. The committee heard eight speakers on the bylaw, most feeling more work is need- ed, despite their stance on hunting. The new bylaw, replacing the current one from 1975, states no firearms or bows can be discharged in urban or prohibited areas, and property owners in those areas cannot permit the dis- charge of firearms or bows on their proper- ty. The prohibited, restricted and urban areas cover most of Pickering. The permitted area is roughly from Brock Road to the west, Lakeridge Road to the east, the Pickering- Uxbridge Townline to the north and Hwy. 7 to the south. Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell pointed out the City tries to update all out- dated bylaws. The Ministry of Natural Resources said in a letter it found the new bylaw severely restricted hunting, even in areas where MNR believes there would be no safety concerns. Among many other concerns, it disagreed with the proposed requirement of written permission to hunt on private property. Trespass and hunting is already an offence, which MNR monitors, the letter said. “I’m not aware of any municipality that asks for written permission,” said Jay Downey, an MNR conservation officer who attended the meeting. He said hunters in Pickering general- ly respect the boundaries and laws set out by the ministry. Mr. Downey covers the Pickering area and others, including Ajax and Uxbridge. Coun. O’Connell asked if there’s a num- ber to call where people reporting offences can speak to a person, since she often hears reports go unanswered for days. Mr. Downey said there is a number: 1-877- TIPS-MNR. Mr. Balka said hunting helps farmers save their crops and reduces the number of vehi- cle and deer collisions. It can also send herds into more remote locations, which means fewer coyotes. He added hunting is regulated in Pickering, and he often comes across MNR officers and police. “I’m not aware of any incidents of hits or close calls in Pickering,” he said. Resident and regional council candidate for Ward 3, Peter Rodrigues, said he often hears shots where hunting is currently pro- hibited in Pickering. “No one’s been hit yet but it doesn’t mean that nothing will happen in the future,” he said, adding more public meetings are need- ed on the issue. Coun. O’Connell said she’s no stranger to hunting complaints. “I personally have received numerous calls regarding the Rouge Park area and Cherrywood,” she said. Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson felt differently. “I have never had a call of an illegal hunter or poacher in those 22 years (on council),” he said. The proposed bylaw was sent back to staff for changes before it comes up for council consideration at a future date. Incentives for employees to buy hybrids, take transit BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX -- One of Canada’s greenest employ- ers is headquartered in Ajax. Veridian Corporation was recently named one of Canada’s Greenest Employ- ers for 2010 by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. The compa- ny distributes power in several Durham municipalities including Ajax, Pickering, and Clarington. Those municipalities are shareholders in Veridian. The organization received the honour for a variety of programs it has in place for employees, including interest-free loans towards the purchase of energy-efficient appliances or a hybrid car. Many employ- ees are part of the Smart Commute pro- gram and the company offers transit sub- sidies of a 25-per cent reimbursement cheque every six months. Veridian also supports educational ini- tiatives such as an energy conservation program designed for Grade 5 students in Durham and offers research support for the development of electrical vehicles at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa. “What we tried to do is to put programs in place to help not only the company to do good things for the environment but also to have our employees go out and help the environment and the commu- nities that we live in,” said Michael Ange- meer, CEO of Veridian. Veridian employees who volunteer get access to funds, company resources, facil- ities and equipment plus time away dur- ing working hours to an annual maximum of $5,000. Mr. Angemeer said the company’s green initiatives have been well received. “We’re seeing a greater uptake from employees and a lot of them are very pas- sionate about the environment and we’re hoping this award means there will be more uptake of these opportunities,” he said. Mr. Angemeer himself is enthusiastic about green projects. For more than two years, he’s driven a hybrid car that’s been retrofitted to become one of Canada’s first plug-in hybrids. “The car also has solar panels on the roof, so I have a lot of great conversa- tions with people in the parking lots about renewable energy and electric vehicles,” he said. I’ve never seen so many.” At which point my husband reminds me that I have, in fact. They just hatched out three weeks early during this strange, glorious, record-breaking spring, well before many voracious songbirds were around to subdue their numbers. Midges are one of the most important links in the food chain. Having so many out early makes migration easier for all the kinglets, warblers, vireos and flycatchers hopping about Durham Region’s woods and thickets these days. And for swallows and swifts diving through masses of excit- ed, humming midges that rise above trees in columns. Spiders catch many more than they can eat and the harvest gathered in their webs provides an easy living for enterprising birds. My husband watched a red-breast- ed nuthatch moving methodically along a twig, gobbling up midges stuck in a spider- web’s silken strands -- a banquet buffet. Curious to see if we could identify the midge species swarming in our garden, Dennis got out his binocular microscope and I found a hand lens. Thanking a local spider for helping out science, I slipped a sheet of white paper behind a section of midge-laden web and carried it off intact. I’d assumed most of the tiny bodies would be dead, and not of great interest to pointy-beaked predators. Was I ever sur- prised to find, under magnification, that most of them were very much alive and struggling to escape. We stared in wonder at these long-legged, long-winged insects that looked half like miniature damselflies, half like small mosquitoes without the piercing needle nose. Technically, midges aren’t in the “bug” family; they’re flies, so have one pair of wings, not two. The males we looked at had the most magnificent fluffy, feathery antennae imaginable, double hooked mouth parts and long, horned claspers on the tip of their slim abdomens. The females were only half as long, with pointed antennae and broader, blunter abdomens, presumably designed for car- rying and depositing eggs. Seriously intrigued by this time, we looked up “non-biting midges” in our big bug Bible -- Insects, their Natural History and Diversity by University of Guelph pro- fessor Stephen A. Marshall -- and discov- ered a whole world of nature I knew little about. The midges drawn to our porch light at night look like the sturgeon flies that swarm in dense clouds near Lake Erie in spring, sometimes “tens of thousands per square metre.” They belong to the family Chironomidae, which has 2,000 species in North America. Numbers are so high that scientists figure they make up over half the species, and the majority of individuals, of all animals liv- ing in fresh water, where their larval stage plays out. That’s a lot of midges. We’re currently putting the finishing touches on our special 10th anniversary edition of Faces of the Future, a celebration of the best and brightest young men and women in schools across Durham Region. And once again, they’ve inspired our admiration with their collective achieve- ments in the arts, sports and in their com- munities. Each and every boy and girl -- in our lat- est edition and in past editions -- epitomiz- es the very best of the future. When we conceived of Faces of the Future in 2000, it was rooted in our knowledge that Durham Region was home to some won- derfully active and engaged young people and we wanted to acknowledge their pres- ence in our midst. It has since expanded to include every elementary and high school in Durham Region, along with post-sec- ondary school students; the 2010 edition is being distributed to local readers at the end of June. In total, we have recognized nearly 3,000 young men and women in the pages of the annual Faces of the Future publication. It has truly been our pleasure to learn about and meet so many of these bright, active and dedicated young men and women, not least of which was Olympic bronze medal hurdler Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, one of our earliest Faces nominees. As we celebrate this latest collection of young achievers in the 2010 edition of Faces of the Future, we hope to also reconnect with past nominees. Where are they today? Have they pursued their passions and fol- lowed their dreams? Have they lived up to the expectations they set for themselves? In an effort to connect our readers with today’s young Faces of the Future, we hope to also connect with our past recipients and bring updates to you about their lives. The promise each of them held, wheth- er in sports or community achievement, deserves to be revisited. We hope to once again check in with them, take a peek into the present, and share their achievements with fellow residents. Each of these boys and girls, young men and young women -- past, present and future -- brings fresh energy, deep com- mitment and motivation to achieve. Let us celebrate them today and help usher them into a positive future. Past Faces of the Future nominees are invited check in with us, update us and tell us what’s happening in their lives. Ajax recently recognized more than a dozen people at its annual Volunteer Rec- ognition Award ceremony. “Volunteers are the foundation of com- munity development and community engagement, they’re the people that make the town what it is,” said Andrew Norris, community development co-ordinator from the Town of Ajax. The Town’s highest honours are the two civic awards. Former councillor and long- time community volunteer Pat Clark won the adult civic award and Grade 12 J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate student Waleed Nusrat received the youth civic award. “I was very, very honoured, very hum- bled in a way because I knew who some of the previous recipients were ... people who have done so much for the community,” said Ms. Clark. She first came to Ajax in the 1970s and got involved in fighting to prevent a toxic waste plant from being built in the community. “In the end, we were successful and the plant wasn’t built,” she said. Ms. Clark also fought the creation of a Pickering landfill and served as local Ajax councillor in the early 80s and as a Region- al councillor in the late 80s. Now retired from politics for almost 20 years, Ms. Clark has spent the subsequent years donating her time to the communi- ty, fundraising for organizations such as Big Sisters, the Salvation Army and Denise House. “I’ve just volunteered pretty much in every capacity I’ve been able to,” she said. Ms. Clark chaired the Town’s 50th anni- versary gala committee in 2005 and was one of the driving forces in organizing last fall’s 70th anniversary reunion of veterans of the Battle of the River Plate. She was also a major fundraiser for the Ajax legacy obe- lisk installed on the Ajax waterfront and is a current member of the community advi- sory group for the Rouge Valley Hospital System. She said she spends her time volunteer- ing because of the satisfaction she gets from it. “I’ve always said whatever I’ve done for Ajax, Ajax has given me so much back, it’s such a great community.” Waleed also expressed his thanks for the award. “I was really happy because I heard about these awards, but I didn’t think I’d be one of the winners,” he said. Among the reasons he was recognized was his creation of Project REACT, which he created last summer to help kids in the Attawapiskat First Nation communi- ty in northern Ontario. After fundraising, Waleed was able to send 100 school kits, including important basics like notebooks, pens and pencils, to the community. He also helped create a cricket program for local youth, working with communi- ty organizations such as The Youth Cen- tre and the Town. He also created Good Deeds, a program connecting students and seniors needing assistance with things such as gardening and snow removal. Waleed has volunteered as a teacher’s assistant at a local elementary school, raised funds for cancer research, volun- teered at the local hospital and participat- ed in several clubs at his high school. He’s also on the Town’s diversity and commu- nity engagement plan steering committee. With all that, Waleed has excelled in school winning the Top Student Award each year. “I don’t have a job, but (volunteering) is like my part-time job, it’s something I real- ly enjoy,” he said. He credits his parents, immigrants from Pakistan, with instilling in him the impor- tance of working in the community. “Growing up, we were told we’re so lucky to live here, so I felt an obligation to give back.” The awards were presented during a ban- quet at the Ajax Community Centre. JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 14, 201010 AP Clarington library hosts regional reading competition JENNIFER O’MEARA jomeara@durhamregion.com BOWMANVILLE -- Pickering and Whitby students took home top prizes in the recent annual Battle of the Books. In the junior division, Grades 4 to 6, William Dun- bar Public School from Pickering won the gold medals while n the senior division, Grades 7 and 8, Jack Minor Public School in Whitby won gold, The winning school gets bragging rights and a trophy. Each student on the team gets a medal and a certifi- cate. The fierce competition of students’ reading skills, co- ordinated by Durham libraries, was held in Clarington. “It’s a fantastic competition,” said Lisa Dyche, Clar- ington community development librarian. “It’s very challenging for them. It’s fantastic for kids who aren’t interested in sports, who are maybe more interested in academics to get out and compete,” . The Battle of the Books is a school reading challenge held across Durham Region. Students spend months studying a reading list of 36 books and teams from each school are tested on their knowledge of the books. “They get really close to each other. They spend a lot of time together reading the books and getting ready,” said Tracy Eames of Enniskillen Public School, whose junior team came in second in the Clarington finals. “We’ve been prepping since before Christmas.” Durham Region schools squared off in the Battle of the Books competition hosted by the Clarington Public Library at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreational Complex. The other finalists in the junior category were Jack Minor Public School from Whitby, silver, and St. James Catholic School in Ajax, bronze. Newcastle Public School in Clarington came fourth, Greenbank Pub- lic School in north Durham came fifth and St. Thomas Aquinas in Oshawa finished sixth. The other finalists in the senior category were Dr. Roberta Bondar Public School in Ajax, silver, and Ade- laide McLaughlin Public School in Oshawa, bronze. The Pines Senior Public School in Clarington came in fourth. William Dunbar Public School in Pickering fin- ished fifth and St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Uxbridge placed sixth. “The competition aspect really gets the kids involved and excited. To say ‘reading is good’ is great but to get them competing and making friends is really great,” said Ms. Dyche. This year, more than 100 Durham schools registered teams of literary “warriors”. Each municipality holds pre-competitions and selects its top school to represent the community at the regional championships. During the fierce regional competition students were asked 24 trivia questions based on books including Eric Walters’ Camp X: Fool’s Gold to Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Arthur Slade’s Dust and Cornelia Funke’s Inkspell. “I think it’s good for readers who are up and coming, the kids in the primary grades,” said Ms. Eames. “I’ve had children in Grade 2 and 3 say ‘I really want to be on the Battle of the Books’. It’s gaining popularity.” EDUCATION Pickering school among best in Battle of the Books DURHAM -- Youth violence in Durham Region and a pro- gram intended to reduce it are the topics of an upcoming ses- sion in Whitby. A presentation on the program will take place Thursday, May 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the McKinney Centre in Whitby, 222 McKinney Dr. A guest speaker will discuss violence in Durham Region and the need for alternative programming to help pre- vent at-risk youth from resorting to violence. The session is open to the public and to agencies providing services to youth. Dis- plays from various groups and agencies will be presented. To the sound of beating drums and blar- ing horns, the students entered from both sides of a makeshift castle wall, waving Can- ada’s national flag, the Peace Tower flag, and their Hands Across the Generations memo- rial quilt in celebration of 65 years of Victory in Europe. In attire of blue and white, red and black and white, plaid, and many other elaborate, sharply pressed uniforms, military bands from across the globe gathered in the stadium full of Cana- dian students, veterans, Dutch and others, to perform numerous marches and songs on bagpipes, brass, drums and even steel instru- ments. “This is likely the last time the various vets will be fit enough to visit the Netherlands,” said the show’s British announcer in his opening remarks. He spoke about the connection between Canada and the Netherlands, noting the prominent role Canadians played in liberat- ing the country in 1944 and 1945. “This connection has led to continuous unity between the two countries,” he said. “It was the Canadians that bore the brand of lib- erating the Netherlands.” He asked the audience to give a warm wel- come to the Canadian Lincoln and Welland regiment band, St. Catharines, Ontario, which, in a cloud of smoke, marched through the castle gates and into the stadium with a bang. While they played, Canadian students tapped their feet and hands, cheering. The Canadian band was followed by Pol- ish performances, highland dancers, Scottish pipe bands, and even a Trinidad and Toba- go marching steel band that banged out its energized Caribbean beats to the delight of the kids. As the performance drew to a close, the tune became more serious with the playing of The Last Post, during which the audience stood in silence. The evening was officially closed with the playing of a lone piper atop the castle wall. Children’s Aid Foundation benefits from Sunday event DURHAM -- If you’re in the mood to get all shook up, Elvis is going to be in the house this Sunday. Actually, several will be at an Oshawa Legion branch May 16 for a fundraiser to help the Durham Children’s Aid Foundation. The sixth Springtime Elvis Peo- ple’s Choice competition features 10 Elvis impersonators, along with comedian Victor J. Hansen. It’s produced by Lady Luck Music and organizer Joanna Johnson says the audience will determine the win- ner, not a panel of judges. The event isn’t open to other Elvis imperson- ators. A portion of the proceeds will go to Sharon’s Kids, founded by Sha- ron Clark in 1968. The group raises money to buy Christmas gifts for children in the care of the Durham Children’s Aid Society, or to send them to summer camp. Among the Elvis tribute art- ists competing is John Cigan of Pickering. The 10 performers are also taking part in the Collingwood Elvis Festi- val, running from July 22 to 25. The show is at the Legion Branch 43, 471 Simcoe St. S. The doors open at noon and the show starts at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and $20 for chil- dren 12 and under, and are avail- able at Wilson and Lee Music Store, 87 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa. If buying tickets at the music store, it’s cash only. Tickets can also be bought by calling 1-800-431-1734 or by e-mail at joanna@Ladyluckmusic.com. Visa or MasterCard are accepted. Local sports teams are encouraged to apply for the Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free Ontario grant funding. The grant, which will provide up to $500 to the successful applicants, is to promote a tobacco-free policy. Tobacco-free sports and recreation mean everyone who is taking part in the sport activity does not use tobacco indus- try products. Therefore, participants, spec- tators, coaches, and leaders do not smoke, snuff, dip, or chew tobacco while involved in the activities of the organization. Grants will be awarded based on descriptions of how organizations will implement a policy endorsing the tobac- co-free message through educational and promotional activities. The deadline for application is May 21 by noon. Success- ful applicants will be notified by June 11. Non-profit sport organizations and recre- ation clubs wishing to support and pro- mote tobacco-free policy are invited to apply for funding. For more information and application forms, visit www.sport4ontario.ca or for information on developing tobacco-free sport and recreation policy ,visit www. playlivebetobaccofree.ca. Lighting You can transform your garden into a ro- mantic or festive summer oasis inexpen- sively and easily. String up outdoor lights: use your soft white LED outdoor Christmas lights or try eco-conscious solar powered or paper lanterns. For a more exotic look, invest in a few standing torches. If you have a permanent shade structure or patio roof, install a chandelier to create an elegant out- door extension of your home. Outdoor Rug An easy and inexpensive way to bring the warmth and intimacy of an interior room outdoors is with a patio rug. Choose a vi- brant or earthy shade to accent the colour palette of your outdoor space. Look for a sturdy stain-resistant material that can with- stand weather damage, mildew and direct sunlight. Revive Patio Furniture Instead of replacing your white plastic patio chairs, make them look new again by using Vim Cream to remove dirt and tough stains. Add a fi nishing touch with new chair covers or colourful throw pillows. Invest in Greenery To create a secluded getaway feel on your patio, add “green” walls with potted out- door plants. Use large decorative contain- ers or plant fl owers and bushes at the edge of the concrete slab or terrace. By adding stones or a pathway from the garden you create depth and the illusion of more space. Bring the Barbeque Back to Life It’s not as hard as you think to get your bar- beque ready for grilling season by giving it a good cleaning. Use Vim Cream to easily remove tough grime on the grill and grease tray. Apply oil to cast iron cooking grills to protect the coating and to decrease stick- ing. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 14, 201022 AP END OF THE LINEThe last concert: hugs, smiles and tears Vital Spark Folk Society holds final night of music MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- A full house heard them all again last Saturday night. The Vital Spark Folk Society host- ed its final concert, To Hear them all Again, at the Brooklin Commu- nity Centre, featuring some of the musicians who got the society off the ground 20 years ago, including Holmes Hooke and Bobby Watt. Many other familiar names from the past performed, including Al Parrish, Jeff Wiseman, Two Roads Home and Brooklin native Justine Maw. And while there was music and laughter, many, including the per- formers, had to make an effort not to shed a tear or two. “It’s a very sad thing for me,” Watt said just before the show. “We’re here to see friends and reminisce about the days when we were younger, 20 years younger, and that’s always hard. But it’s also good; it’s a catharsis of sorts. I’m sure tonight there’ll be a lot of tears, a lot of smiles and hopefully a few belly laughs and a lot of singing.” “It’s exciting to see everybody, but I’m very sad that it’s over,” said Vicki Martel, of Oshawa, a Vital Spark board member, who volun- teered for 14 years. “We had a year to adjust, but there was always this show coming up.” She noted the group is ending its run mainly due to inconsistent attendance numbers: while big names generally drew a crowd, lesser lights, whom the society wanted to give a boost, weren’t as big of a draw. “It takes a lot to get people out of their houses these days,” Martel added. Len and Eileen Waltham, of Whitby, got to know some of the musicians at previous concerts and their son and daughter-in-law vol- unteered at Vital Spark. “It’s disappointing, but every- thing seems to run its course,” Eileen said. “Our kids would tell us, ‘I think it’s music you would like’... and they were right.” Len said they heard about the last concert several months ago and didn’t want to miss it. Their kids treated them to the show. Similarly, Sherry Wilson, of Oshawa, wouldn’t have been any- where else. She and her husband started coming to the concerts around 15 or 16 years ago. They became regulars and Vital Spark organizers noticed, asking them to become more involved. She, too, had mixed feelings about the last concert. “It’s kind of enjoyable to see some of these older acts come back,” Wil- son said, adding there was also sad- ness. “I’ve enjoyed coming and it’s like one big family.” PHOTOS BY BRODY HAMILTON WHITBY -- The last Vital Spark Folk Society concert was May 8 at the Brooklin Community Centre. The emotional evening featured musicians from the past 20 years including, above, co-founder Bobby Watt, accompanying a performer during a song. Below, Brooklin native Justine Maw sang a few tunes, backed up by Larry Dickinson on guitar and Al Parrish on bass. Below right, Parrish trades his bass for a guitar and takes his turn at the mic. Shadowy Horses author reads in Whitby WHITBY -- Susanna Kearsley is at the Whitby Central Library on May 17. The local author is reading from the recently re-issued The Shadowy Horses at 7 p.m. First published in 1997, the book is the story of archaeologist Verity Grey and her work revealing an ancient Roman campsite in the UK. “It’s been unavailable in Canada for a few years now, and I’m absolutely thrilled to see Alli- son and Busby and Georgetown Publications bringing it back into print here,” Kearsley said in a press release. She added that she had fun researching the novel because many people in the local village helped her out. “I also got to use actual archaeologists both here and in Scotland to help me keep my dig authentic,” she said. Ajax writer and artist Ingrid Ruthig is hosting the night and interviewing Kearsley. Books will be available for purchase. The library is at 405 Dundas St. W. (at Euclid Street). SUSANNA KEARSLEY BREAKING NEWS: ALL DAY, EVERY DAY >> Pickering High School student accepts scholarship to play on soccer team BRENT BURRY bburry@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Off to the University of Louisville, it is. Christine Exeter visited other schools, but once she stepped foot onto the campus, she knew it was the one where she wanted to study and continue her soccer career. “Once I went to Louisville, it was pretty easy. I wanted to go there. I felt comfortable and the atmosphere was really nice. I could see myself there for four years,” Exeter says emphatical- ly. Exeter will play for the Cardinals on a schol- arship, and while she will have to wait a year, she will have a familiar face by her side. In 2011, fellow Pickering High School stu- dent Zakiya McIntosh will also be attending the University of Louisville in Kentucky on a soccer scholarship. “We’re really close. I love playing with her. We played with the Ajax Storm last year together and I really enjoy playing with her, so it’s going to be like we’ve been playing togeth- er all of our lives,” says Exeter. And now that she’s secured her soccer and academic future, she’s able to exhale and relax for a bit. “I feel really relieved, I just want to get there now. It was a stressful time, just choosing all of the schools. Once it was done, I was really relieved and happy I chose this school. I had no regrets. “I spoke to a couple of the players, one play- er’s from Ontario that went down last year. She told me it’s really nice and she never regretted making that decision,” says Exeter. Exeter plays right back and striker, and although she hasn’t discussed with the coach her role on the team next year, she hopes to be a starter. “I’m a very strong player in the air, I have quite a bit of speed, so on an attacking per- spective, I find that I can be dangerous using my speed and my head. And defending, speed is another big asset,” Exeter explains. The future Louisville Cardinal is not limited to just soccer, either. “Right now I’m doing track and I’m doing school soccer, but I’m also doing tennis. I won LOSSA tennis this year, so I’m going to OFSAA coming up in May,” she says. Exeter says she wants to major in biology, and hopes to eventually become a dentist. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 14, 201024 AP Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com HOCKEY Pickering hosts hockey coaching symposium PICKERING -- A number of high pro- file coaches will be in Pickering to share their expertise about hockey on Saturday, June 5. The 5th annual Pickering Hockey Association Coaches Symposium will be held at Dunbarton High School, and is sure to be a worthwhile day for minor hockey coaches looking to expand their knowledge of the game. Among those scheduled to make presentations are Mike McCourt (former head coach of the Niagara IceDogs), Marlin Muylaert (head coach UOIT Ridge- backs), James Boyd (associate coach Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors), Steve Spott (head coach and general manager Kitchener Rangers), Binne Brouwer (head athletic therapist Brampton Battalion), and Stan Butler (director of hockey operations and head coach Brampton Battalion). The wide range of topics to be dis- cussed includes game preparation and pre-scouting the opponent, special teams, defensive team play, offensive team play, warm-ups and cool down in a limited space situation and overspeed training. The symposium begins at 9 a.m. and will conclude by 4 p.m. The cost is $80, with all Pickering hockey coaches admit- ted free. Coffee, timbits and lunch are included in the registration cost. Coaches attending will be accredited with 20 points toward their Continuing Education Program passports through the OMHA. For more information or to register, visit the Pickering Minor Hockey Asso- ciation website at www.pickeringhockey. com. GYMNASTICS Gold for Bartholomeusz BURLINGTON -- Jeremy Bar- tholomeusz reached the top of the medal podium at a recent gymnastics meet. More than 150 male artistic gym- nasts converged at Burlington BGs Gymnastics Club for the 2010 men’s Ontario artistic championships. Bar- tholomeusz, of Markham Gymnastics, took part in this annual event. The 13-year-old student at St. Mar- guerite Bourgeoys Catholic School in Pickering competed with gymnasts up to two years older in his Level 5 category. However, age did not make a difference as he managed to win gold all around with first-place finishes on floor, pommel horse and parallel bars, silver on rings and horizontal bars and a bronze on vault. SOCCER Exeter leaving for Louisville JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND AJAX -- Christine Exeter is a Pickering High School student who will be attending Louisville University next year on a soccer scholarship. SOCCER Ajax soccer players named to national U17 roster AJAX -- A trio of players with local connec- tions has been named to Canada’s men’s U17 team for the upcoming camp in USA and Mar- tinique. The 12-day camp begins in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and concludes in Fort-de-France, Mar- tinique. Canada will play three international matches in Martinique: one against Marti- nique on May 20, another against Guadeloupe on May 22, and a third match against Antigua, Guyana or Martinique on May 23. Included among the 18 players invited to the camp are Luca Gasparotto, of Ajax, who plays with the Ajax Soccer Club, teammate Jordan Hamilton, of Toronto, and Ajax resident Jalen Brome, who plays for the Unionville Soccer Club. Canada is currently preparing for next year’s 2011 CONCACAF men’s under-17 champion- ship. Next year’s confederation championship will feature 12 teams from North America. The CONCACAF championship will serve as the qualification route for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2011. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 14, 201025 AP PHOTO BY PETER REDMAN Was that good, coach? Here he watched carefully as 10-year-old Shannen Smalley kicked the ball out of her goal. SOCCER Pickering athletes fit and ready to go for season Local soccer club puts athletes through paces PICKERING -- Last month, the Pickering Soccer Club, in part- nership with Athletic Training Professionals, ran its annual pre- season fitness training. With over 40 teams taking part in the training, the two-day event was well received. ATP measured the athletes in power, speed, agility, strength endurance and reaction. “ATP brings experience and knowledge to the pre-season program that is unprecedent- ed,” Pickering club head coach Tony LaFerrara noted in a press release. “Incorporating state- of-the-art testing allows ath- letes and coaches to review their results immediately and on- line; benchmarking their perfor- mance level for further develop- ment.” Teams were scheduled for 60- minute sessions in which the speed of the player, agility, run- ning with the ball, change of direction, decision making, flexi- bility, power and overall strength were tested. “We have been running our pre-season sessions for five years with ATP,” LaFerrara adds. “Regardless of each athlete’s fit- ness level, the testing, reporting and available continued training are components of our competi- tive program that make us a lead- er in the soccer community.” PHOTO BY WILLIAM MEIJER PICKERING -- Members of the Pickering Soccer Club were recently put through a battery of pre-season testing by ATP. FASTBALL Greco soars south of the border with all-star award WHITBY -- Merissa Daley and Maria Greco, who play for the Whitby Eagles fastball team in the summer, have earned all-star recognition playing for California University of Pennsylvania this spring. Both received PSAC West second team all-star honours, as California University prepares for the NCAA regional tournament it will be host- ing this weekend. Daley, of Whitby, has flourished in her year as a second baseman after starting at shortstop in 2008 and center field last season. She has hit at a .297 clip (41-for-138) with eight doubles, 13 RBI and 28 runs scored. As a junior, Greco, of Pickering, is second on the team and third in the league with a 1.50 ERA while post- ing a 13-7 mark in the circle. She also is among the conference lead- ers with a career-high 158 strike- outs and .182 opponents’ batting average (80-for-439). Whitby’s Jami Otter is a freshman with the team. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. PROFESSIONAL AND COURTEOUS SERVICE 905-686-6880 New UOIT assistant coach had playing career ended by concussions BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- Craig Fisher knows all too well how quickly a life can change. For him, that day came Nov. 12, 1999. One moment, Fisher, an Oshawa native now living in Whitby, was flying down the ice on a power play with the Rochester Ameri- cans, looking for his league-lead- ing 16th goal in the 17th game, and perhaps wondering in the back of his mind whether he would final- ly make the jump from the Ameri- can Hockey League to the Nation- al Hockey League and stay there. In the blink of an eye, it was all over. In what he calls “the perfect storm of concussions”, Fisher, his vision blocked by a teammate, was hit hard but cleanly by a Wil- kes-Barre opponent. Concussion number one. As he was falling from that hit, the knee of another Wilkes-Barre player travelling at top speed nailed him in the head. Concus- sion number two, the one he would never fully recover from. To top it all off, he hit his head on the ice. Concussion number three. “So within two seconds, I had three concussions and one very, very serious one,” recalls Fisher, who turns 40 in June. “The doctor at the game said (later) you can’t think of this as a sports injury. It was like a car accident-type con- cussion.” Fisher hasn’t played a game of hockey since and still deals with symptoms, but he has managed to forge ahead and make a career of the game he loves. Recently, he made a move up the coaching ladder, stepping down as head coach of the Whitby Wolves of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League to accept an assis- tant’s job under Marlin Muylaert with the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s team. But getting there was far from easy. Just 29 at the time of the inju- ry, he and wife Diane had a one- year-old daughter, Molly. He was of little help bringing her up over the next few years, especially the first, when he spent more than 20 hours a day in bed and couldn’t go outside. Something as simple as a dropped spoon would put him out of commission. “The first four years were real- ly rough and it’s still something I really have to manage,” he explains. “With an injury like that, you’re never cured or back to nor- mal. It’s kind of a new normal and you have to manage your energy and things like that. “It was a life-changing kind of moment for sure.” He was fortunate to have an incredible support system in his recovery, led by his wife, whom his friends have dubbed a “saint”. He credits the Rochester team for standing by him and getting him the best treatment, which includ- ed acupuncture, chiropractic ther- apy and even Botox injections. “My wife says it helps my head- aches and makes me look a little younger as well,” he jokes of the latter. But it was from an unlikely source where he drew inspiration, too. Pat LaFontaine, a star with the New York Islanders and Buffa- lo Sabres whose career was also cut short by concussions, called him every day for six months and helped set him up with the best doctors in the field. Fisher had played against LaFontaine, but had never met him before. “Anyone who’s gone through it is very, very passionate about get- ting it out there and helping peo- ple,” says Fisher, who openly dis- cusses what he went through. “We all try to help each other, so I don’t mind talking about it at all.” Fisher’s life to that point revolved around hockey, where he had always been an offensive dynamo, but was finally starting to develop a defensive side to his game, he says. A third-round pick of the Phila- delphia Flyers in 1988, he ended up playing just 12 games in the NHL, without registering a point. In the minors, though, he put up a 74-goal season with Orlando of the International Hockey League, scored 53 with Indianapolis, and was really coming into his own with the Amerks before the injury. “There’s always the what-ifs because I had finally learned to play a two-way game,” he said. “You certainly wonder if you could have played a little longer and in the NHL.” He wonders how far hockey may yet take him, especially when he sees former teammates like Dan Bylsma and Todd Richards cur- rently coaching in the NHL. But for now, he loves being a homebody, and playing a big role in the life of Molly, a hockey player herself in the Whitby Wolves sys- tem. HOCKEY Fisher finds his way back into game SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND WHITBY -- Craig Fisher, shown here coaching the Whitby Junior Wolves this past season, will join the staff of the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s team in the fall. He had his hockey playing career ended by concussions 10 years ago. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 14, 201035 AP The Life And Times of a New TownBILD 2009 Home Builder Of The Year.
