‘It’s pre-planned G20 training’
DURHAM -- Low-flying aircraft caused alarm
among some Durham residents Thursday morning,
but the community needn’t fear -- they’re just part
of preparations for a gathering next month of world
leaders in Toronto.
The low-flying aircraft prompted some readers
to call our newsroom seeking an explanation. It
was provided by Durham police spokesman Dave
Selby, who said the manoeuvres were part of
security exercises in advance of the G20 summit
taking place in Toronto at the end of June.
“It’s pre-planned G20 training with various
types of aircraft,” he said.
Security for the event is being coordinated by
the RCMP and Toronto police.
Other police services, such as Durham, will
provide personnel for security when the summit
occurs June 26 and 27.

The FAITH (Further
Advancement In Tree
Habitats) Project was cre-
ated by Faith Gibson when
she decided to spread the
word about sustainability
and the importance of tree
habitats. The E.A. Fairman
Public School student, actress in her school’s produc-
tion of Beauty and the Beast, Girl Guide and sustain-
ability advocate first got the idea in order to fulfill a Girl
Guide badge requirement.
“I think it’s important because since there’s been a lot
of construction, they’ve been cutting down a lot of the trees,”
Faith said while taking a break from a rehearsal.
She’s also an advocate for trees because they give animals a
place to live, she said, adding she wants to get involved in ani-
mal rescue when she’s older.
Faith has been volunteering or raising money for various
charities since she was four. “She is very involved that way,” said
Faith’s dad, Brad Gibson.
Faith received a grant from General Motors of Canada, and
has also appeared at the Pickering Markets to raise money for
the project.
On May 16, she’ll plant 200 trees at Pringle Creek Park in
Whitby. But her initiative is far from over. Next year, she has a
goal to plant 400 trees, and then 600 in 2012. She’ll have a booth
at the Karavan Festival to collect even more donations.
Mr. White is glad to help out Faith, his goddaughter.
“We thought it was a great project,” he said, adding he hopes
to help benefit other local initiatives as much as he can in the
future.
A game pass will cost $20 on the day of the event or $10 in
advance, which can be purchased online. Otherwise, tickets are
$1 per play.
Organizers are still looking for volunteers and sponsors, and
still have spots available for performers.

Automatic life sentence
imposed
BY JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- A jury has declared Aimee Mar-
garet McIntyre guilty of the first-degree mur-
der of an Ajax man, finding she coerced two
young men into committing a fatal attack on
her former lover.
Shortly after Thursday morning’s verdict,
Ms. McIntyre, 28, of Bobcaygeon, was sen-
tenced to life in prison with no possibility of
parole for 25 years.
Calling the killing of Karl O’Reggio “abso-
lutely heartless and senseless”, Superior
Court Justice David Salmers admonished Ms.
McIntyre for her actions.
“You can never atone for the needless, life-
long harm you have caused,” the judge said.
Ms. McIntyre is the third person to be
found guilty of the murder of 33-year-old Mr.
O’Reggio, who was stabbed to death by two
young men who burst into his Tresher Court
apartment in 2007. Although she wasn’t
physically present when the deadly attack
occurred, jurors accepted the Crown theory
that Ms. McIntyre was responsible for the kill-
ing because she instructed Jonathan Ebanks
and Nathan Kelly -- strangers to Mr. O’Reggio
-- to carry it out.
An audible gasp was heard in the large, sec-
ond-floor courtroom as the jury foreperson
declared Ms. McIntyre guilty as charged; sev-
eral of Mr. O’Reggio’s relatives burst into tears.
Ms. McIntyre betrayed no reaction.
Jurors, who began hearing evidence in the
case in mid-April, had been sequestered
since midday May 4 as they deliberated a ver-
dict. They considered three options: They
could have found Ms. McIntyre guilty of the
first-degree murder charge she had been
indicted on, or opt for the lesser offences of
second-degree murder or manslaughter.
During the trial, prosecutors Kent Sali-
wonchyk and Indy Kandola portrayed Ms.
McIntyre as the driving force behind the bru-
tal killing of Mr. O’Reggio, with whom she
had been involved in a relationship. Jurors
were told that as that relationship deterio-
rated, hard feelings developed between the
two and that Ms. McIntyre enlisted Mr. Kelly,
at the time her 18-year-old boyfriend, and his
buddy, Mr. Ebanks, to kill Mr. O’Reggio.
Jurors heard that in July of 2007, following
an exchange of insulting text messages with
the victim, Ms. McIntyre, Mr. Ebanks and Mr.
Kelly, along with a 15-year-old girl, drove from
Bobcaygeon to Ajax, checking to make sure
Mr. O’Reggio was home before parking in an
empty school parking lot near his house.
Ms. McIntyre directed the two young men
to Mr. O’Reggio’s house and instructed Mr.
Ebanks to be prepared to use the large knife
he’d come armed with, jurors heard.
Mr. Ebanks testified as a reluctant Crown
witness, admitting it was he who repeatedly
plunged the knife into Mr. O’Reggio’s chest as
Mr. Kelly held the victim in a choke hold. But
when pressed by the prosecution about Ms.
McIntyre’s role in the plot he clammed up,
refusing to answer any more questions.
Both Mr. Ebanks and Mr. Kelly pleaded
guilty to second-degree murder prior to Ms.
McIntyre’s trial and were sentenced to life
in prison with no possibility of parole for 16
years.
Following the verdict, Justice Salmers sen-
tenced Ms. McIntyre to the obligatory sen-
tence of life with no parole for 25 years. The
judge noted the Criminal Code allows Ms.
McIntyre to apply for a review of her sentence
after 15 years; the provision is commonly
referred to as the “faint hope clause”.

I just got a heads-up from Bird Studies
Canada about something special this week-
end: World Migratory Bird Day. Perfect
timing, as we reach midpoint in the great
flood of songbirds streaming through Dur-
ham Region from their wintering grounds.
I can’t think of anything more exciting to
celebrate.
According to the website www.worldmi-
gratorybirdday.org, communities around
the planet are paying tribute to our migrat-
ing birds with everything from art shows
to nature hikes to habitat clean-ups. And
hopefully, lots of birding.
How can we celebrate, with no time to get
an event organized? How about stepping
out the back door for a five-minute “song-
fest” -- listening to each song you hear and
trying to pinpoint the source? Or go for a
walk in the nearest creek valley or nature
reserve and count how many different spe-
cies of birds you see or hear.
To protect migrating birds locally, why
not tack fine gardening netting in front of
your picture windows to stop fatal colli-
sions, or put up CollidEscape decals? And
keep your cat indoors. Because the United
Nations has declared 2010 the “Interna-
tional Year of Biodiversity,” the theme for
this year’s Migration Day is Save migratory
birds in crisis -- every species counts.”
I can’t help thinking of a few special
long-distance migrants en route to breed-
ing grounds in Durham Region this very
moment. Indigo buntings winter from cen-
tral Mexico to Panama, in Cuba and the
Bahamas. Having male indigos show up
at their feeder is a high point of many peo-
ple’s year; they’re such a beautiful blue in
the sunlight. Buntings can be found at the
edge of woods and along shrubby fencer-
ows, wherever there’s brushy habitat for
the female to build her cup-shaped twig-
and-grass nest, and tall trees for the male
to perch atop and sing his slow, buzzy,
paired descending notes.
Scarlet tanagers winter in tropical for-
ests in northwestern South America --
what forests are left in Bolivia, Peru and
Colombia. You can see the stunning crim-
son-coloured males with their crisp black
wings, and the greenish-yellow females, in
the tops of just-leafing-out trees at migra-
tion hotspots, but soon they’ll be invisible
in the canopy of Uxbridge, Ganaraska and
Long Sault forests, located only by their
raspy, “robin with a sore throat” song.
Bobolinks are another long-distance flier,
commuting from the pampas of north-
ern Argentina to grasslands in southern
Canada. Look for them in pastures across
the south face of the Oak Ridges Moraine.
Increasingly early mowing of hayfields and
intensive corn production for the etha-
nol boondoggle are causing havoc with all
grassland birds. So when you hear the bub-
bling waterfall of notes of a bobolink, and
see a handsome male perched on a mul-
lein stalk, its midnight plumage marked
with white wings and a buff-yellow patch
on its head, be sure to stop and pay trib-
ute.

New tiles added to our
nation’s cultural mosaic
Canada’s population swelled by 50 last
weekend at a special ceremony in Dur-
ham.
The new Canadians were on hand with
several dignitaries and Whitby residents
at a citizenship ceremony held as part of
National Youth Week organized locally by
the Whitby Youth Council.
They came from far and wide, these new
Canadians, brimming with hope and high
expectations to build a new life for their
families. The citizenship ceremony wel-
comed them from Trinidad and Tobago,
Jamaica, China, the United States and the
Philippines.
Durham Region residents, too, should
celebrate and embrace these newest mem-
bers of the Canadian cultural mosaic. We
welcome them, encourage them to honour
and recognize their cultural traditions in
their adopted homeland, and wish them
the very best this country has to offer.
Just as they share differences with one
another, they share cultural differences
with fellow Canadians. But these do not
separate us, they unite us. Let us recognize
what it is that distinguishes each of us and
draw strength from that diversity.
Canada is recognized the world over as a
nation of stability, peace and abundance.
We have welcomed new citizens from all
corners of the globe and encourage them
to assimilate as they see fit. But it’s true
that we all share common values in Cana-
da. We must respect those values as Cana-
dians, while continuing to embrace the
traditions that make each culture unique.
As citizenship Judge Philip Gaynor noted
to the citizenship inductees, they are
encouraged to “love the old country ... love
Canada more.”
Congratulations are due to these families
who have opted to choose Canada as their
new home. It takes courage to leave one’s
homeland and start anew.
But they must know that they have cho-
sen wisely. Canada continues to evolve as
a nation but does so with quiet, orderly
confidence. We must continue to celebrate
and grow with our differences, celebrate
the diversity that makes us the envy of
nations around the world, and which iden-
tifies us as the true north, strong and free.
Finally, we say to the citizenship induct-
ees: Welcome to Canada. We grow with
you and support your efforts to contrib-
ute to our collective betterment. We’re all
in this together now and we’ve got some
work to do.

Whether you are looking for a great
mattress, like Tempur-Pedic, great made-in-
Canada beds and furniture or stylish custom
stools, MasterBedroom has it all!
MasterBedroom is excited to announce
that they are now carrying Amisco stools
in their stores. While it may seem unusual
to buy a stool from a bedroom store,
MasterBedroom has been an Amisco bed
dealer for over 20 years, and has recognized
the need for high quality, custom Canadian
stools.
At MasterBedroom, they have a
wide selection of mattresses from top
manufacturers such as Serta, Thera-Pedic,
Nasa Foam, and Latex. The Sleep Specialists
will help you choose the best mattress for
your needs and that will allow you to have a
good night’s sleep.
MasterBedroom also has TempurPedic
mattresses, which are made from open cell
foam developed by NASA that offers better
contouring to your body, creating more
breath-ability, cooler temperatures and a
more comfortable sleep surface without
movement that disturbs your partner. A
Tempur-Pedic mattress will conform to each
individual’s every curve and angle, creating
a customized sleep surface. Because of its
unique design, the Tempur-Pedic mattress
never needs to be fl ipped and only minimal
turning side to side for more even mattress
wear.
Let their experienced staff help you
find the right mattress the first time. They
do not sell used, repackaged mattresses,
which is very important with the problems
and epidemics of today, such as bed bugs,
H1N1 Flu, Bird Flu, SARS, etc.
MasterBedroom also carries adjustable
beds, waterbeds, linens, duvets, pillows
mattress pads and other bedroom
accessories.
MasterBedroom has two convenient
locations in the Durham Region and is
open seven days a week. The Pickering
store is located at 1755 Pickering Parkway
in the Home & Idea Centre. They can be
reached at (905) 427-2047. The Whitby
store is located at 1540 Dundas Street
East, on the northwest corner of Thickson
Road and Dundas. They can be reached at
(905) 668-4300. For more information on
MasterBedroom, please visit the website at

Distant Shores: The
Extraordinary War
Brides! on to May16
MIKE RUTA
mruta@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- When Backwoods
Players placed an advertisement in
the News Advertiser in 2006, look-
ing to interview local war brides for
the purpose of developing a play,
there was a great response.
About 25 women, mostly from
Pickering and Ajax, answered
the ad, and a team of four writers
developed a questionnaire and
set about interviewing them. The
timing was perfect, as it was The
Year of the War Bride in Canada.
But the women, to a person, won-
dered what all the fuss was about.
“They were uniformly stunned
that anyone was interested,” recalls
Barbara Pleva, one of four writers
who created Distant Shores: The
Extraordinary War Brides! “And
every woman began by saying,
‘my story isn’t particularly inter-
esting’.”
The stories were interesting, fas-
cinating in fact, and the low-key
attitude of the women is typical of
what has been called “the great-
est generation.” These are women,
Pleva notes, who didn’t whine
and complain when things got
tough. They carried on; they were
on a mission, even managing to
find some fun in the darkest days
of the Second World War. One,
on her way to Canada, had her
boat struck by a German torpedo.
Another served as a driver for Brit-
ish General Bernard Montgomery,
whose reputation was made fight-
ing the Afrika Corps in Africa.
After the interviews, the writ-
ers, Pleva and Julie Oakes, Saman-
tha Williams and Angela Steyn,
all from Backwoods Players at
the Pickering Museum Village,
set about writing, condensing all
they had heard and everyone they
had met into three key characters
for War Brides, first performed in
February 2007. The premise is that
three old women get together at
the Legion hall every year to remi-
nisce and, in a series of flashbacks,
we learn about their experiences.
The real brides were feted when
the play debuted, and Pleva and
her fellow writers were obviously
most interested in their reaction
to the play.
“They just hugged us and said,
‘you got it right’,” Pleva recalls.
Pleva says that across North
America, 8,000 Second World War
veterans die every day.
“We need to hear these sto-
ries before it’s too late,” she says.
“There is urgency.”
The play is a part of the Durham
Theatre Festival. Tickets are $20.
The hall is just south of Hwy. 7. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 7, 201015

Stories from ‘the greatest generation’
ART SHOW
Pickering artist’s exhibition on in Ajax to end of May
MIKE RUTA
mruta@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Kay Hubbard gets
into the zone when she works.
“When I paint ... there’s not a
single, solitary person who can
get to me,” says the Pickering
artist.
“I’m just there with the colours
and the canvas and the think-
ing about the light and the dark
going on in the picture.”
She’s showing her work at the
McLean Community Centre in
Ajax until May 31.
Hubbard used to do tex-
tile work and tapestry weav-
ing but watercolour painting
“took over” and is her medium
of choice. She has learned from
many artists, including Picker-
ing’s Hi-Sook Barker and Shel-
ley Beach, formerly of Pickering,
who became “a mentor.”
And while Hubbard is an
accomplished artist in her own
right, she’s also her own tough-
est critic, always learning,
experimenting with and search-
ing for a different technique or
style. Where one painting will
be quite detailed, at least for
a watercolour, another will be
much looser in style.
Nature, and especially the area
around her cottage, is a source
of inspiration and portrayed in
much of her work.
“That’s the best place to work,”
she says of the cottage. “There’s
a peaceful relaxation up there. I
like to paint early in the morn-
ing at the cottage.”
Where she grew up, in rural
Illinois, was an early inspira-
tion. Apart from the thrill of, for
example, going through a dilap-
idated barn and seeing all the
interesting things inside, there
was the sky.
“If you look at the sky in Illi-
nois, the horizon seems to go
on forever,” Hubbard says.
She often works from photo-
graphs she has taken or that she
has borrowed from someone
else.
“You need a reference point,”
Hubbard says. “You can work
from imagination, but a refer-
ence point is useful.”
The show features roughly 30
works, painted within the last
few years.
“I strive to show that water-
colour landscapes are dramat-
ic and rich in colour contrasts,
like life,” she says in her artist’s
statement. “This show is about
the seasons. It is amazing to me
that we spend a lot of time in
one season longing for the next.
Or some actually leave this sea-
son to experience another one -
- no longer wanting winter snow
or harsh temperatures.”
Each season brings new
colours and landscapes and
creating a painting, whatever
the time of year, “is a valuable
healing experience,” she states.
The public can see Hubbard’s
work during regular centre
hours.

DURHAM -- After 40 years of
entertaining audiences, the Dur-
ham Region Concert Association
is folding its tent.
Strung-Out Troubadours, fea-
turing guitarist Rik Emmett, will
be its final show, on May 8 at
Oshawa Little Theatre.
However, there is a chance
another concert series will be
offered in the future.
“A combination of factors,”
DRCA president Rick Kerr said in
an interview. “Not unlike some
businesses today and arts groups,
unfortunately, a combination of
the economy, rising artists’ fees
and, I suppose, us trying to hold
the line on (ticket prices).
“Dwindling audiences due to
the economy is another factor,”
Kerr added.
Kerr has received several e-
mails from concert-goers express-
ing sadness that the DRCA is end-
ing.
But he said there might be a light
at the end of the tunnel. A profes-
sor at Durham College, he has
also acted and directed at Oshawa
Little Theatre. He has an upcom-
ing meeting to discuss a partner-
ship between the DRCA, the col-
lege and OLT. His idea is to bring
the DRCA to OLT and turn the
latter into “a wonderful working
lab” for music business manage-
ment students at the college. Kerr
stressed that it’s still an idea at this
point and not set in stone.
What is guaranteed, however, is
that the DRCA’s demise will ben-
efit the students. At the end of
the DRCA season, the remaining
funds will be used to create a bur-
sary, either an expendable one or
one in perpetuity, named after the
DRCA.

trying to qualify
national team for
2011 World Cup
SHAWN CAYLEY

PICKERING -- The Guyana
national women’s soccer roster
has quite the Pickering feel to it.
Five players, including four
starters and a technical director,
all with ties to the Pickering Soc-
cer Club, are representing the
green, yellow and red of Guyana
en route, they hope, to a spot in
the 2011 World Cup.
“That’s the ultimate goal and
I am confident we’re going to
get there,” says Mark Rodrigues,
Guyana’s technical director and
a former coach at Pickering.
Should Guyana accomplish
that goal, the team’s Pickering
contingent will play a large role
led by starters Briana and Kayla
DeSouza, Ashley Rodrigues and
Mariam El-Masri.
When Mark Rodrigues first
latched on to the Guyana nation-
al program, his search for play-
ers of Guyanese descent began
and it’s no surprise, he says, that
the search brought him back to
Pickering more than once.
“It’s quite a hot bed for soccer
and I think even Canada needs
to look at it a little more closely,”
says Rodrigues, who was with
the team this week as they spent
a few days training in Pickering
in preparation for next week’s
second round of qualifying in
Trinidad.
“Four out of the five have
earned starting spots and that
again shows the quality of what
is coming out of Pickering.
“I didn’t teach them to play the
way they are playing right now.
Someone out of Pickering had to
have done that,” he adds with a
laugh.
For Ashley Rodrigues, Mark’s
daughter, going through this
experience with Guyana has so
far been an experience to cher-
ish, she says.
“It’s amazing. Not many people
get the opportunity to do this,
represent a country and play the
sport they love,” she notes. “We
do and we’re definitely going to
take advantage of it.”
Rodrigues has played at a high
level before.
The former St. Mary Catho-
lic Secondary School student
is wrapping up her senior year
on a soccer scholarship at East-
ern Michigan University, so the
pressure of being a starter at the
national level shouldn’t be too
much to handle.
Meanwhile, Ashley Savona,
currently the only member of the
five who hasn’t earned a starting
spot yet, says the most amazing
part of the experience has been
seeing what their presence and
efforts have done in Guyana.
“Going down there for the first
time and seeing what a big dif-
ference we can make, just for
the country itself. It brings up
so many more opportunities,
not just for us, but the people of
Guyana.
“We’re spreading the word
around (about Guyana),” she
says.
Savona is a the youngster of
the group at just 17.
As for the DeSouza sisters,
Kayla and Briana, who resisted
the lure to head south and play
at a U.S. college and instead
hooked up with the University
of Toronto and Carleton Univer-
sity respectively, they are enjoy-
ing the opportunity at hand.
“We get to travel, go through
crazy training sessions. Peo-
ple are always asking about it.
It’s great,” Kayla says following
a practice session at Kinsmen
Park.
Briana adds: “It’s a big deal. I
never pictured myself going this
far and I am sure a lot of people
here haven’t, but we’re giving it
100 per cent.
“We’re all working hard for the
same goal. It’s a great experi-
ence.”
And it should continue to be
great.
Guyana is unbeaten to date
in international play and the
expectation is that the team will
keep the streak going in their
quest to get to the World Cup
finals, which will be held in Ger-
many.
“We’re giving it our all and
hopefully we’ll make it to the
World Cup,” says El-Masri.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • May 7, 201017

The 14-year-old, Grade 9 stu-

Indians, Pirates ready
for first pitch of season
Ajax, Pickering
open Ontario Select
Baseball Association
season this weekend
BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- The Ajax Indians
and Pickering Pirates are ready to
get at it.
The two teams will kick off their
respective Ontario Select Baseball
Association seasons this week-
end, with the Indians staying
home to host the Whitby Chiefs
in a doubleheader on Saturday,
while the Pirates will be on the
road for a pair of games in Forest
Glen against the Giants on Sun-
day.
The Indians are looking to build
on a positive finish to the 2009
campaign. Although finishing
fifth in the Eastern Conference
with a record of 10-13-3, their
success came in the post-season,
upsetting their geographic rivals
from Pickering before losing to
the Brooklin Dodgers in the semi-
finals.
Mike Kitevski, taking over as
general manager after serving as
field manager for the ball club
the last three years, is optimistic
about the new season.
“Having gone to the semifinals
the last two years, our goal this
year is the finals,” he says, adding
great pitching and timely hitting
will be the key this season.
The Indians have lost a couple
of players in Rob Patterson and
Mike Grieve, who have joined the
Intercounty Baseball League. The
team will have a new direction on
the diamond with Mike Snider
taking over as manager. Key play-
ers the ball club will be leaning
on this season include catcher/
pitcher Jamie Tessier, pitcher/first
baseman Chris Theodoru, all-star
centre fielder Ryan Gordon and
infielder Graeme Findlay.
Saturday’s games against Whitby
will be played at 4 and 6:30 p.m. at
the Ajax Sportsplex.
The Pirates have something to
prove after winning the Eastern
Conference regular season pen-
nant for the second season in a
row in 2009 with a mark of 16-9-
1. In 2008, they lost in the league
finals to Burlington, and made an
early exit last year at the hands of
Ajax.
“We’ve done really well in the
regular season in the last two
years,” says field manager Phil
Lacombe, who is back for his fifth
season. “We’re very optimistic
about this year to repeat that per-
formance (of 2009) but to make
a deeper run in the playoffs and
compete for the championship.”
To help with that, the club has
added some depth at pitching,
welcoming Mike Robinson and
Tyler Mandzuk and utility player
Andrew Cartier, who join a ros-
ter that returns 14 players from
last season. The team will also
be counting on second base-
man Ryan D’Souza and assistant
coach and team captain Romeo
Persaud, who patrols right field.
Following Sunday’s season
opener in Forest Glen, the Pirates
will host the Vaughan Vikings
on Sunday, May 16 in the home
opener, with games at 2:30 and 5
p.m. at Kirkey Field.
The teams play a 28-game regu-
lar season.

ular league games,” said LaFerr-
ara. “Having a turf field available
to our members ensures that the
development of our players hap-
pens right here at home.”
Both teams continue throughout
the month to prepare for the new
season. Once the season kicks off,
their Pickering home matches
will take place at Kinsmen Park
Power Field in Pickering.
Pickering Soccer Club runs rec-
reational, all-stars, competitive,
goalkeeper/referee programs,
academy, futsal, clinics and adult
programs. In the community for
over 30 years, Pickering Soccer
Club continues to run programs
that support long-term player
development and cater to the
needs of the growing community.
PICKERING -- Anyone who
knows anything about soccer
coaching will be familiar with
the name Tony Waiters.
Waiters is an NSCAA national
staff instructor, Canadian Soccer
Hall of Fame inductee, national
team player and is also author of
ByteSize Coaching, a website for
soccer parents, coaches and vol-
unteers.
Used by over 350 clubs, rang-
ing from Canada, America,
UK, Australia, Singapore, and
including the Pickering Soc-
cer Club, ByteSize Coaching
was created to help community
clubs and associations reach all
their coaches and provide edu-
cation and training for all levels
of play.
Waiters will be in Pickering
on Sunday, May 9 from 9 a.m.
to noon at the Power Turf field,
at Kinsmen Park. Focused on
the Ontario Soccer Association
long-term player development
program, three sessions are set
to address the different ages and
stages of play.
“Tony Waiters brings experi-
ence and knowledge to coach-
ing with his ByteSize Coaching
program,” said Tony LaFerrara,
Pickering’s club head coach.
“We offer the program to all our
coaches. With its web-based
learning components and train-
ing modules, the program pro-
vides the training needed to
advance coaching experience
while making it accessible to
coaches in their busy sched-
ules.”

Dear Mom,
It is diffi cult to describe with words
our exact feelings for you,
but so easy to feel in our hearts.
You are an inspiration as a person and as a parent.
You are truly beautiful inside and out.
You are thoughtful, generous, patient, and kind,
and you leave a warm impression with
most everyone you encounter.
Through the heartbreaks in your life
you have been a fearless leader,
always maintaining your endless optimism.
In our lives, you are a true and constant pillar.
You are unselfi sh, loving and devoted,
and have always lived putting family fi rst.
We have grown up with a deep love and dedication
to one another, and you are the root of this bond.
You are the heart of our family,
and we couldn’t love you more.
Thank you, the kids.
