A small duck was spotted running though the intersection of Whites Road and Kingston Road. “The duck was sitting in the road and it started chirping,” said Lenka Bigas, supervisor at Helping Hands Daycare on Kingston Road, who helped in the rescue. Ms. Bigas was helping children off a bus when she noticed the small fowl running on the road. She and three parents helped rescue the duck. “It took four of us to get him because he kept running around,” she said. Transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX -- A woman was hit by a Durham Region Tran- sit bus Thursday morning at the Ajax GO station and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening inju- ries. The woman was crossing Westney Road when she was hit by a bus making a right turn out of the station. “A pedestrian ran across a red light in front of a bus, the bus was on a green,” said Phil Meagher, deputy general manager operation for Durham Region Tran- sit, at the scene. The woman was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police were on scene investi- gating the incident. “And also our driver was taken to hospital in shock,” said Mr. Meagher. He said he wasn’t sure how many passengers there were on the bus, but it might have been empty as it was just starting its route. As police investigated, it caused a major traffic snarl around the GO station. “It’s shut down southbound Westney, traffic’s backed up,” said Mr. Meagher. Northbound lanes were open, but slow going, and police were directing southbound traffic onto Fai- rall Street into industrial Ajax, forcing commuters to detour to get into the south GO station parking lot. The group of community volunteers works in an adviso- ry capacity to council and acts as advocates for people with disabilities. Members pre- sented their 2009 accomplishments and 2010 goals to council recently. One in seven Ontarians has a disabil- ity, which is about 1.8 million people in total, Mr. Falconer said. That number will only increase, and the Province plans to implement and enforce the Accessibil- ity for Ontarians with Disabilities Act by 2025. “We’re pretty excited,” said Gwelda MacDonald-Tuttle of the group. “We’re an energized committee.” In 2009, the group’s big accomplish- ments included providing key informa- tion on the AODA to Pickering residents and partnering with the Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club, enabling kids with dis- abilities to sail. They also provided feed- back on legislation and standards, and participated in Toronto’s forum on dis- ability. Its 2010, work will include providing input on Pickering’s urban growth plans, participating in Durham’s Accessibility Expo, creating an accessibility awareness day and reaching out to businesses that may be hesitant about the new legisla- tion. “We’re actively going to do a neigh- bourhood walk of hope to see if we can promote accessibility,” said Mr. Falcon- er. The group also wants to remind people there are many types of disabilities. “We’ve got to look beyond the scope of just one disability as well,” he said. The Pickering Activity Council 4 Teens was created in 2002 and has been planning teen events and activities that are run by the City ever since. The group, now with 18 members from various Pickering high schools, meets once a month at the Petticoat Creek Community Centre, and puts on big monthly events. “It provides a fun, safe envi- ronment for teens to hang out and have fun with friends,” said Caitlin Kirouac. Council president Karina Clen- denning explained PAC 4 Teens organizes free teen events, every- thing from dodgeball games to car washes to band nights. It also gives input on year-round activities put on by the City’s Free Teen program. Members donate their time when needed, such as participating in the upcoming Pickering Art Fest. Karina said PAC 4 Teens plans such a variety of events that teens with all different interests enjoy the activities. The council also gave input on the free activities taking place next week in honour of Youth Week from May 3 to 7. All students need to participate is a City ID. Pickering teens aged 13 to 19 can get one free at any one of the programs (parent signature is required), PAC 4 Teens is accepting new members. Information can be found on Facebook under Pac4Teens, or on the City of Pickering’s website. Secretary Sarah Pizzale got involved because she “thought it’d be a good opportunity to get my (school-required community ser- vice) hours and get involved in my community.” Member Danielle Feraday finds the group beneficial, and has learned planning events is “a lot of work. “It’s different for each event that we run,” she said. Caitlin said it’s nice that the City looks to the teen group for advice and suggestions. For more information: VISIT www.cityofpickering.com/teen NE081H109 ©2009. Sears Canada Inc. Black-capped chickadees are the friend- liest, cutest, most cooperative birds you can imagine. Familiar year-round residents of every Durham woods, they hang out together in harmonious groups and never squabble. So when I saw two chickadees locked in what looked to be mortal combat, I thought it had to be an accident. Their feet must have somehow gotten linked or tangled and they couldn’t get apart -- that must be it. Because here were two little fluffballs rolling on the ground, flapping and fussing for all they were worth, oblivious to any- thing but each other. Then a third chickadee swooped low over the pair, scolding in turn, and it occurred to me the tussle might not be an accident at all, but some spin-off of the mating pro- cess. When at long last the two managed to break apart, and one flew off with the other in hot pursuit, I realized I may have just witnessed a passionate defence of territo- ry, be it feeding site or nesting cavity. The chickadee battle took place directly beneath my sunflower seed feeder. Not 60 metres from where I’ve watched a pair of chickadees busily excavating beakfuls of dross from a rotten tree stub, coming and going through a small round hole. Proof positive why we should leave dead trees around for birds to nest in. Beside the personality change, what I found curious was the complete lack of attention to personal safety the warring chickadees displayed. They were literally lying on the ground, fussing and fluttering, where any predator could have snatched them up, two for the price of one. I guess it was a good thing I was standing there. Since then I’ve been noticing other down- right risky behaviour. Cottontails keeping a low profile all winter in the woods came out into the yard in broad daylight this week and chased each other around. In the open, they’d be prime targets for hungry red-tailed hawks. I went for a walk along the Lake Ontar- io shore and came upon small knots of ring-billed gulls standing there screeching at one another -- clearly something to do with mate selection. I approached within 10 feet before they bothered to fly a bit far- ther down the beach and carry on screech- ing. As I pondered all this dicey, even dan- gerous, behaviour, I thought of bright red male cardinals perched in plain sight atop bare deciduous branches, singing their hearts out. And robins furiously attacking their own reflection in window glass, over and over. If that isn’t a loud call to lunch for any Cooper’s hawk or merlin in the neighbour- hood, I don’t know what is. Obviously, in the fevered mating rituals of spring, courtship comes first, and the brave repopulate the earth. Durham outdoors writer Margaret Carney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far- flung corners of the planet. Spring brings on risky behaviour in the world of nature Margaret Carney Letting girls choose where they’ll be most competitive High schools across Durham Region could soon see both Jack and Jill lining up on the same scrimmage line, or trading passes on the soccer pitch, with the intro- duction of a new gender policy governing secondary school sports. The change, mandated as a result of a human rights challenge by a female stu- dent in Waterloo, Ont., allows greater free- dom of choice for young athletes with the skill to compete to the best of their abili- ties. Historically, schools approached the gender issue with a view to compromise: if a girl wanted to compete on a boys’ team, she could do so only if no comparable pro- gram or team existed in that particular sport. This ruling eliminates that barrier for young women seeking to challenge them- selves, test their skills and contribute equally to sports teams. In a country that embraces diversity and equality, and in educational institution- al settings that actively promote gender equity and healthy relationships, it makes sense for schools to follow the issue to a natural conclusion and allow girls to have that choice. Some educators with responsibility for sports teams, not surprisingly, disagree with the new mandate, and go so far as to suggest that some boys might be excluded, or prevented from earning a spot on the team of their choice, if a girl decides to try out. That’s a hollow argument. Coaches are expected to choose the best players for their teams; if a girl is more competitive - - a better player -- she should be rewarded based on skills and not on her gender. Having noted that, however, there is merit in the notion of developing elite female athletes in same-sex settings. Durham coach Barb Boyes believes it’s important to develop top female ath- letes on female teams. If the best of young female athletes all opt to take a spot on a boys’ team, she reasons, it will reduce the quality of the female sport. That, too, makes sense. We encourage high schools across Dur- ham to continue to develop and establish sports programs for young women. There’s nothing wrong with advocating on behalf of and building same-sex teams, while at the same time providing an option for female athletes who want to challenge their skills against the opposite sex. This ruling doesn’t necessarily signal the end of female sports in our high schools; it’s a logical next step in acknowledging our deep belief in equality of the sexes. - Durham Region Media Group durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 30, 20107 P VIJAY BADHWAR, DMD Dental Care for Adults, Kids and Great Big Babies. • A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. 905-683-1391 We keep our patients smiling by taking the time to understand their needs. Lawn arden Advertising FeatureG&Home, Keep mosquitoes from ruining your barbecue Few things exude the spirit of summer more than a backyard barbecue. Casual at- tire is expected, and a good time is had by all. One thing that can ruin even the best bar- becue, however, is the uninvited guest with a big appetite. And it’s not Uncle Frank. Mos- quitoes might not ask for a third or fourth hamburger, but they do tend to feast when- ever they get the chance. At best, mosqui- toes are annoying and pesky. At worst, mos- quitoes pose a serious health risk to adults and pets, as mosquitoes can carry viruses that result in illness. But mosquitoes don’t have to ruin your outdoor plans this summer. Instead, taking a proactive approach before the summer sea- son starts can help reduce the risk of mos- quitoes dropping by your next barbecue. The following methods can make your yard less attractive to hungry mosquitoes, ensur- ing Uncle Frank will be the only one fi lling up at the next barbecue. * Destroy or dispose of tin cans, old tires, buckets and similar water-holding contain- ers. * Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left outside and cover trash containers to keep out rainwater. * Clean clogged roof gutters on an annual basis. * Change water every week in birdbaths and wading pools. * Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fi sh. * Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. * Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps and arrange them so they drain properly. * Clean animal troughs weekly. * Irrigate lawns and gardens carefully to prevent water from standing for several days. The same pollen and allergens that keep you from enjoying your garden come the warmer weather could also be affecting your pet. Now that more dogs spend time snuggling up to their pet parents in bed or share the same room at night, many people are discovering that their pooch has a snoring problem. Dogs snore for many of the same reasons people do. Causes can include being overweight, nasal obstructions, ill- ness, and allergies. Some dogs with fl at faces and compact noses may be more prone to snoring as well. Secondhand smoke can be another cause. By visiting a veterinarian you can help rule out certain causes of the snoring. If together with the vet you determine that the cause of the snoring is allergies, you don’t have to lose anymore sleep. Pollen counts are generally the highest in the morning and at night. Walk your dog during the afternoon when the levels are lower. Also, keep your pet out of the garden during peak pollen times. Allergies other than from the environment may be the result of additives in dog food or from fl ea and tick problems. Talk about your concerns with the veterinarian to choose products that may help your dog to be more comfortable. Does Your Dog Snore? A lush green lawn can be fun to sculpt, affording homeowners the chance to get outside and soak up some sun. And that lawn also adds to the property value. While lawn care can be a rewarding hobby in more ways than one, it can also prove frustrating at times. Summer heat waves can be taxing on the lawn, drying it out regard- less of how much hard work goes into its maintenance. Though summer temperatures can prove a formidable foe, understanding how to keep a lawn properly watered can go a long way to keeping your lawn lush during the most grueling of summer swoons. How Do I Know When My Lawn Needs Water? In general, a lawn should be watered every day during the warmer months, with the ex- ception being days when it’s already raining. However, there are signs to indicate when a lawn is especially in need of some extra wa- ter, and that’s often when it’s suffering from wilt or dehydration. * Coloration. A lawn that’s beginning to change color likely needs extra water. In general, a lawn that’s wilting under summer heat will begin to turn bluish-green. * Shape of the grass blades. Healthy grass blades should be straight. However, grass that is suffering from wilt or dehydration will begin to curl. This might not be as no- ticeable to the naked eye as discoloration, but lawn care enthusiasts will notice this change of shape. * Imprints. Footprints won’t remain on a healthy lawn, but a lawn that’s wilting or dehydrating will likely be littered with foot- prints. Which Watering Method Is Effective? Watering techniques can vary depending on the size of the lawn. Many times portable sprinklers are adequate, not to mention inex- pensive. When purchasing a portable sprin- kler, consider the area you will be watering. Portable sprinklers often vary in their range, so be sure any portable sprinkler you pur- chase will be able to reach the entirety of the area you intend to water. When purchasing a sprinkler, it’s also important to consider the shape of the area the sprinkler will be watering. For example, an oscillating sprinkler is best suited for a Maintain a healthy lawn throughout the summer swoon large, rectangular area, whereas revolving sprinklers are best suited to smaller, circular areas. Another effective means to watering a lawn is to purchase a supplementary sprinkler for those smaller areas that might go unwatered. These can be areas under a tree, beneath a backyard deck, or any other area that might be blocked from an existing irrigation sys- tem. Such areas still need water, even if they are shaded most, if not all, of the day. How Can I Maximize Water I’m Allowed to Use? Many areas, particularly those with espe- cially hot summers, place watering restric- tions during times of drought. As a result, homeowners are often looking for ways to maximize the water they are legally allowed to use. In general, morning is the most effi - cient time to water. That’s because less water is lost to evaporation and wind drift in the morning, when the temperature is generally cooler and the summer breeze is not as strong as it will be later in the day. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 30, 201019 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com durhamregion.comEntertainment Events throughout region May 5 to 16 BY MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- It’s almost time to celebrate theatre in Durham. Interest in the first Durham The- atre Festival has been building since it was officially announced last fall, and now the May festival is set to inspire and entertain. “For a first-year festival, I’m real- ly happy with this much interest,” says founder and director Michael Khashmanian of Whitby. “We got the (first) four participants fairly early. Class Act and Herongate (dinner theatres in Whitby and Pickering, respectively) have been very supportive from the start.” The list of participants has at least doubled and there’s some- thing happening in five of Dur- ham’s eight municipalities. And it’s not just local actors who will shine. “The beautiful thing about the festival is that three of the plays are written by Durham Region residents,” he says. St. Mark’s Players will be fea- turing Kashmanian’s Where’s the Minister? in Whitby. J. Clarke Richardson students in Ajax have penned ReLying on Remedy, to be performed in the Ajax school’s theatre. Finally, Backwoods Play- ers in Pickering is staging Distant Shores by Barbara Pleva, Angela Steyn, Samantha Williams and Julie Oakes at the Brougham Hall. But before the actual plays begin, the festival will kick off in style on May 5. Billed as Golden Age of Broadway, the opening cel- ebration gala will give those who attend a chance to meet some of the participants and organizers and dine at Oshawa’s Tosca Ban- quet Hall. As well, five Durham talents with strong links to theatre in Durham, especially at Oshawa Little Theatre, will be perform- ing memorable Broadway songs from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. The performers are Mariah Horn- er, Donna Lajeunesse, Jennifer Nieuwendyk, Amanda Moorhead and Eric Danis. Gala tickets are $101.50 at www. durhamtheatrefestival.com, where you can also learn more about the festival and read syn- opses of the plays. Khashmanian says there will “absolutely” be a second festival next year. “It’s the kind of thing where everyone benefits and I don’t see the downside of having a festival,” he says. Ajax artist, writer showing work in Pickering “We are constantly bombarded by language,” says Ajax writer and visual artist Ingrid Ruthig. “From TV, radio, books, the print media, the Internet and even the person next to you on their cellphone, a barrage of words comes at us that we have difficulty processing.” In 2007, Ruthig set out to reflect this phenomenon in a series of col- lages she called Fragments of the Missing. This enigmatic and visual- ly arresting set of square panels was created by “deconstructions and reassemblies,” starting with com- puter text printouts of her original poems plus pieces of handmade papers from Japan and Korea that she glued in layers on wood pan- els. She is booked to show these works and others in an exhibition at the Ontario Power Generation Information Centre in Pickering from May 3 to June 21. Ruthig will show newer works at Clarington Public Library’s Artspace on the Mezzanine in October. Art and literary sensibilities have woven their way through the fab- ric of Ruthig’s life. She recalls: sto- rytelling from the cultured German background of the maternal side of her family; the strong ambitions of her parents for her to be a musician as she grew up in St. Marys, Ontar- io; the art training she received from an actress/artist in Stratford; and, an impressive career, since the late 1990s, as an award-winning writer of poetry and fiction and a literary reviewer and critic. Initially, however, her career aspi- rations took her in a more pragmat- ic direction as she studied architec- ture and graduated with a degree from the University of Toronto in 1986 and spent a dozen years work- ing in the field. But a downturn in the business, coupled with respon- sibilities as a mother of two young daughters, conspired to make her a stay-at-home mom in the Ajax house she shares with husband Peter. However, simply sitting down to type on her PC reminded her of poetry and screenplays she’d dab- bled in at earlier stages in life and she threw herself “full bore” into writing: attending workshops, sub- mitting to literary magazines and assuming a role with a local arts and letters journal. For information about Ruthig’s upcoming writing and visual arts projects, go to www.ingridruthig. wordpress.com. Allan O’Marra is a professional artist living and working in Ajax. Dickson’s, after finishing fifth in the league, were on a roll knocking off the fourth-place team and then the season champs. However, it was all Michaels in the game that counted most as a pres- sure defence and balanced offence was too much for Dickson’s. Michaels led 25-17 at half time and never looked back. Claude Whitfield led the offence with 15 points, while Roy Bailey had a dozen. John Esposito and Mike Stod- dart added 11 each. Phil Guthrie was solid in a losing cause with a game- high 18 points. Scott Poulton and Tim Lane contributed six each. In the consolation B championship, Philips Hager and North defeated North Alliance Press 57-46. Philips led 27- 25 at the half and the game remained close until late in the second half. Clairmonte Burgess had the hot hand for Philips, knocking down 20 points. Garnett Cunning had 14 while captain Roger Young and Orin Taylor added 9 each. All seven players scored for NAP with Calvin Smith leading the way with 11. Tom George, Bill Lashley and Derek Kent each had seven. The league for men 45 and older will restart after Thanksgiving. HOCKEY Raiders make the OHL draft list As many as eight players could be drafted Saturday BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Players eligible for Saturday’s annual OHL priority selection draft will be glued to their computers waiting and hoping to see their name pop up on the screen. While the temptation is to sit there for hours watching selection after selection, determin- ing the future of young players born in 1994, the coach of the Ajax-Pickering minor midget Raiders has suggested his players find some- thing else to do. “Because it’s on the computer and every- one is tempted to sit and watch, I try to tell them to try and find something to do the day of the draft. Don’t sit by the computer,” says Trevor Nkiwane, who is going through the draft process for the fourth time as a coach. “If your name pops up on the computer, you are going to get a phone call from that team anyway.” Nkiwane says eight players from his roster made the draft list and could be scooped up by an OHL team during Saturday’s proceed- ings on the Internet. Among the players on the draft list are forwards Drake Caggiula, Jeffrey Heard and Devin Shore, and defence- men Will Pointon, Robert Power and Daniel Renouf. Goalies Tim Ernst and Justin Urqu- hart have also garnered some interest. Nkiwane adds teams sometimes go off the charts with their picks, so it’s impossible to predict if anyone else on his roster will be selected. The Raiders finished second in the ETA West Division this season with a 16-11-7 record. They were eliminated by Markham in six games of a best-of-five OMHA opening round playoff series, fighting back from 4-0 and 5-1 point deficits to square things at five points each. The deciding game finished in Markham’s favour 3-2. Despite the disappointment, the Raiders dropped down and advanced through to win the ETA league playoffs, sweeping Peterbor- ough in two straight games in the final series. Over the course of the past season, Nki- wane tried to prepare his players for all the fuss surrounding the OHL draft. “The biggest thing I told them is that teams are going to call them and send them ques- tionnaires and show interest in them. I tell them to be honest with all the teams if they contact you and give them honest answers. Just be yourself.” Saturday’s draft can be followed on the Internet at www.ontariohockeyleague.com beginning at 9 a.m. HOCKEY Generals included on Canadian staff OSHAWA -- There will be plenty of connections to the Oshawa Generals at the 2010 world hockey championships in Germany next month. Part owner Peter DeBoer, head trainer/equipment manager Bryan Boyes and former star player John Tavares will all be among those helping Canada vie for gold at the IIHF men’s tournament May 7-23. DeBoer, head coach of the Florida Panthers, will serve as an assistant under Craig MacTavish, while Boyes will be the team’s equipment manager and Tavares one of its highest profile players. Boyes, a Whitby resident, has served the same capacity at several world junior championships previously, but this is his first foray into the men’s game at this level. Minnesota Wild defenceman Brent Burns, an Ajax native, has also been named to the preliminary roster, which will be completed once the first round of the NHL playoffs are completed. have to think of the boys because you’re going to be taking a person’s spot on that team,” says Booker. HIGH SCHOOL Policy change lets Durham girls play on boys’ team New OFSAA regulation on gender equity BRENT BURRY bburry@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- The Ontar- io Federation of School Athletic Associations has changed its gender equity policy, making it possible for girls to play on boys’ high school teams. OFSAA’s old policy did not allow for girls to play on boys’ teams if there was a girls’ team with similar resources available. The revised policy states that a girl is “eligible to partici- pate on a boys’ team if she demonstrates comparable skill and ability during a successful tryout.” This change comes as a result of an application filed with the Human Rights Tri- bunal of Ontario by Sir John A. Macdonald Sec- ondary School (Waterloo) student Courtney Greer, which argued the old policy denied her the opportunity to play where she wanted because of her gender. Rose Booker, curriculum chair of physical education at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax, disagrees with the idea of a girl playing on a boys’ team if there is already a girls’ team available. “My philosophy is if you offer a girls’ program, they should be on the girls’ team,” says Booker, who points out it’s not fair for a girl to take away a boy’s spot on a team. “The man- date in high school sports is to get as many people playing as possible. That’s our mandate, so why would we take a spot from a boy if there was a spot for the girl to play on the girls’ team?” Not everyone has that same opinion, however. “I think everyone deserves the opportunity to play their sport at the highest level, and whether that level be girls or boys, then so be it,” says Michael Dion, Picker- ing’s St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School boys’ hockey head coach. “It gives every- one equal footing,” he says. Barb Boyes, coach of Whitby’s Donald A. Wil- son Secondary School girls’ field lacrosse team, has mixed feelings on the new policy. “I think it can be a bit dangerous. It’s a little bit unknown territory that goes with it. I think that one of the things we have to do is protect our female sports. We want our top female athletes playing our female sports. Top athletes make the female version of the game better. If our top female athletes all went to the male teams then it waters down the female version of the game,” says Boyes, who also adds that every athlete has their own unique scenario. Booker experienced a situation in the past where a girl wanted to play on a boys’ team. “We had a hockey player that wanted to play on our boys’ team, and we said you Page 6 - Today’s editorial GYMNASTICS Ajax, Pickering gymnasts put on a show at Provincial Cup competition in Ottawa DURHAM -- Gemini Gym- nastics was well repre- sented at the Ontario Pro- vincial Cup in Ottawa and Windsor, as 31 athletes from the organization par- ticipated. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation.
