PICKERING -- While many high school students
head to far-off places such as France or England
for their student exchange programs, a group of
22 from Dunbarton High School is sticking to
Canada.
However, while the students are staying on
Canadian ground, it won’t exactly be on familiar
territory.
Grade 10 to 12 Dunbarton students are going
to Waswanipi, in central Quebec, which has a
population of 1,473. There they’ll be staying with
Cree families for the week of May 23 to May 30
and experiencing life as the people of Waswanipi
know it.
But before the Dunbarton students head off, 22
students from the Waswanipi Youth Band Coun-
cil will come to Pickering on May 9 for a week to
experience life in Durham.
“It’ll be different from what we’re used to,” said
Dunbarton student Melissa Sutaroski.
Her family will be hosting a student before she
heads to Waswanipi herself, as will the others
taking part in the exchange.
She acknowledged it’ll probably be the same
for the students who will come to Pickering.
The exchange is being done through the YMCA
Youth Exchanges Canada Program. The low-
cost program aims to give youth opportunities

PICKERING -- Melissa Sutaroski, Matthew Gregory and Kysa Bashir of Dunbarton High School are growing tomato plants to be sold to raise
money for a Waswanipi exchange trip. They hope to raise between $1,500 to $2,000 for the trip. The plants will go on sale April 26.

PICKERING -- Two more people have been charged in
connection with a Pickering double murder, including
the father of a man already facing first-degree murder
charges.
On May 5, 2009, the bodies of Harjinder Singh Sand-
hu, 28, of Brampton, and Puneet Singh Chhina, 26,
of Nepean, were found in the trunk of a car in rural
Pickering near Rosebank Road and 4th Concession.
On April 21, police arrested Ganesh Singh, 56, of
Markham, and charged him with accessory after the
fact to murder. He is the father of 29-year-old Vijay
Singh, a resident of Toronto and Burnaby, British
Columbia, who was charged in February with two
counts each of first-degree murder, kidnapping, forc-
ible confinement and use of a firearm in commission
of an offence.
A Canada-wide arrest warrant has also been issued
for Zaki Goffur, 34, of Richmond Hill, who has been
charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Police
believe he is currently out of the country.
John Le, 38, of Markham, was arrested in January,
charged with two counts each of first-degree murder,
kidnapping and using a firearm in commission of an
offence.
Media reports following discovery of the bodies indi-
cated Mr. Sandhu had been scheduled to appear in
court in Windsor June 1, 2009 to face charges of import-
ing cocaine.
In late December, Durham police said they’d recov-
ered DNA linked to a potential suspect. In an appeal
for more information issued Dec. 22, investigators said
they’d tracked the movements of the dead men in the
hours prior to the fatal shootings and travel of the sus-
pects afterward. Police concluded the men were mur-
dered in the area of Kennedy Road and Sheppard Ave-
nue in Toronto, after which their bodies were moved to
Pickering. Durham cops conducted a canvass of that
area, seeking potential witnesses.
According to information released by Durham police
in December, the victims travelled from Brampton to
Toronto May 4, 2009, and were murdered there. The
bodies were placed in the trunk of their own Nissan
and driven to Pickering, where the car was abandoned.
A second car was also driven east to the area in which
the bodies were left, cops said.
Police said a cellphone belonging to one of the
dead men remained in the second car used by the
killers; that vehicle was driven north to Whitchurch-
Stouffville, then back south to the Kennedy Road and
Sheppard Avenue area.

AJAX -- A police officer was swarmed by youths when he
came to the rescue of a security guard under attack at an Ajax
plaza Tuesday.
The officer suffered minor injuries in the melee, one of two
incidents in which kids clashed with cops at the location this
week. In a second incident Wednesday, an officer was threat-
ened as he attempted to make an arrest at the plaza.
Durham police said in Tuesday’s incident, a security guard
had asked youths loitering at the plaza, at Rossland Road and
Harwood Avenue, to move along after one of the boys interfered
with a woman and child entering a store. The guard was “having
difficulty” with the youths, police said.
A police officer patrolling the area saw the situation and inter-
vened, calling for backup as he was assaulted during a struggle.
Additional cops arrived and arrested three suspects, also dis-
persing a crowd of about 150 teenagers who had assembled.
The first officer on the scene was treated for minor injuries.
Two youths, aged 16 and 17, were charged with assaulting police,
escaping custody and causing a disturbance while a third was
cautioned and issued a provincial offence ticket for trespassing.
On Wednesday, a police officer was in the act of arresting a
youth who had refused to leave the same plaza when a group of
youths began to approach. The cop released the suspect, who
quickly fled the scene, police said.
The officer wasn’t injured.

Trial disrupted as Crown
witness clams up
BY JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Karl O’Reggio’s killers were
pumped up and singing along to the
radio as they were driven away from the
Ajax murder scene, a jury heard Thurs-
day.
And it was Aimee Margaret McIntyre,
Mr. O’Reggio’s former girlfriend, who
drove the men to and from the scene, a
Crown witness testified.
Nathan “Bigs” Kelly and Jonathan
“Banks” Ebanks were blood-spattered
and agitated after going to Mr. O’Reggio’s
home to confront him about messages
he’d sent to Ms. McIntyre, Crown wit-
ness Natasha Visscher said.
Mr. Ebanks, who’d gone to the Tresh-
er Court house armed with a large knife,
fretted the attack had been lethal, she
said.
“Banks says, ‘S---, I think I killed him’,”
Ms. Visscher recalled.
Ms. McIntyre, 28, of Bobcaygeon, has
pleaded not guilty to first-degree mur-
der in the killing of Mr. O’Reggio. The
Crown contends Ms. McIntyre, who had
an acrimonious break-up with the 33-
year-old Mr. O’Reggio, convinced Mr.
Kelly and Mr. Ebanks to kill the man.
Ms. Visscher, who now lives in Tasma-
nia, appeared by video link to give her
testimony.
She said she was a 15-year-old living
with Ms. McIntyre when she went along
for the ride from Bobcaygeon to Ajax the
day Mr. O’Reggio died.
Along the way the two men talked
about “poking” Mr. O’Reggio and dis-
cussed how an injured shoulder might
make him vulnerable, she said. When
the car, driven by Ms. McIntyre, arrived
in Ajax, it was parked in a schoolyard
and Ms. McIntyre directed the men to
the victim’s house, she testified.
Ms. Visscher said Ms. McIntyre advised
her to make sure the doors of the Ford
Focus were not locked “because the boys
would be in a hurry”.
A short time later, the men jogged up
with bloodied clothes and jumped in the
car, she said.
Ms. McIntyre was worried a car in
the area might belong to a friend of Mr.
O’Reggio’s but relaxed when the vehi-
cle was out of sight, Ms. Visscher said.
She said that while the two men at first
seemed agitated about the violent con-
frontation, they too returned to normal.
“They were pumped,” she said. “They
started singing along to songs on the
radio and things like that.”
Earlier in the trial Mr. Ebanks, who has
pleaded guilty to second-degree murder
for his role in the killing, created a dis-
ruption in the trial when he refused to
answer any more questions.
Mr. Ebanks, called as a Crown wit-
ness, had earlier described how he had
stabbed Mr. O’Reggio six times while Mr.
Kelly held the victim in a choke hold.
He was being cross-examined on incon-
sistencies in his testimony by prosecu-
tor Indy Kandola when he suddenly
announced he wouldn’t cooperate any
further.
“I’m not saying no more,” he announced
Wednesday afternoon.
Recalled Thursday morning, he main-
tained his refusal.
Earlier, Mr. Kandola had asked Mr.
Ebanks if he was tailoring his testimony
so that Ms. McIntyre wouldn’t be impli-
cated in Mr. O’Reggio’s killing.
“You’re worried that it might get back
to the penitentiary that you’re a rat,
right?” Mr. Kandola asked.
“Yeah,” Mr. Ebanks responded. “Cor-
rect.”
The trial, before Superior Court Justice
David Salmers and a jury, continues.

Bloodroot, trout lilies, Dutchman’s
breeches, trilliums. Whole carpets of tiny,
delicate blossoms are pushing up through
the leaf litter in the woods these days,
each more exquisite than the next. They
last such a brief time, bursting into bloom
before the tree canopy leafs out overhead
and grabs all the sunshine.
My favourite is spring beauty. Not even
ankle high, clusters of tiny white flowers
veined with pink appear on a thread-like
stem above twin, pointed leaves, open-
ing in the morning sun and closing again
at dusk. And I’m always thrilled to find
hepaticas, small lavender flowers with
shamrock-shaped leaves.
Who doesn’t love violets? The earliest
ones out have tiny white blossoms, the
next ones yellow. Only later do the com-
mon purple and blue hues appear, cul-
tivars of which many gardeners plant in
shady places for ground cover.
Wild leeks make use of spring sunshine
by thrusting up clumps of bright green
leaves as soon as the snow melts, spears
that melt away in turn before the small
white flowers appear. Trout lilies, too, push
up their lance-shaped leaves, speckled like
a trout, before their nodding yellow blos-
soms uncurl.
There’s a good reason the trillium is
Ontario’s provincial flower. They’re the tall-
est and showiest and, where they haven’t
all been dug up by rapacious gardeners
wanting to plant them in their yards, they
make a brave display just as the woods leaf
out. Scattered among the snowy white ones
you might find less common red trilliums.
And in damp woods shaded by hemlocks,
a rare painted trillium.
Like so many plants across the planet, our
“spring ephemerals” have evolved curious
shapes to ensure their own pollination. Sit
for a while on a fallen log and watch queen
bumblebees, just awakened from their
winter sleep, visit a patch of squirrel corn,
drawn by the perfumed scent. Serious life
business for the bee and for the flower, and
that both give pleasure to humans is an
added bonus.
Most of our precious spring flowers are
highly selective about where they grow
-- basically, in undisturbed deciduous
woods. Two centuries ago, before Euro-
pean settlers started hacking and hewing,
cutting and clearing, wildflowers surely
spread like a blanket throughout Upper
Canada’s magnificent old-growth forests.
Now you’re lucky to find them in the few
remnant woodlots saved from destruction
-- Altona Forest, Heber Down, Claremont
Conservation Area, Wilmot Creek, Soper
Creek, Purple Woods. Lynde Shores Con-
servation Area in south Whitby always has
an impressive display.
So this is it -- a brief window of time to
rush out to the woods to witness the very
best beauties of spring. Be sure to stick to
the path when you’re out there. You never
know what tender, exquisite sprout might
be pushing up, easily crushed by human
feet.

Ready for the knowledge
economy in Durham Region
The expansion of post-secondary educa-
tion options in Durham will be a key com-
ponent in transforming the region and will
help cultivate the fundamentals that are
the basis of success in a knowledge-based
economy.
So says Don Drummond, the highly vis-
ible and respected chief economist for TD
Bank, in a recent visit to business leaders
in Oshawa.
The location of a permanent Trent Uni-
versity campus in Oshawa, growth of the
University of Ontario Institute of Technol-
ogy and the established presence of Dur-
ham College all combine to create more
opportunities for Durham Region youth to
earn their academic credentials right here
at home. Mr. Drummond lauded the strat-
egy to focus on the growth of academia in
Oshawa and, by extension, Durham Region
while helping to diversify its economy and
rely less on manufacturing. The proxim-
ity of post-secondary opportunities, too,
should serve to improve the statistics relat-
ed to high school education. Oshawa, for
example, has lower than average rates of
secondary school achievement, Mr. Drum-
mond noted.
In a future economy that will almost cer-
tainly require some form of post-second-
ary education, it becomes vitally impor-
tant for Durham Region’s young adults to
acknowledge and avail themselves of the
educational opportunities that exist at the
post-secondary level.
Whether learning a trade at the Dur-
ham College Skills Training Centre, work-
ing towards a degree at UOIT or Trent, or
obtaining a diploma in one of the wide
range of courses offered at Durham Col-
lege, young people can literally choose
their educational path and build impor-
tant new-economy skills.
Those skills can then be transferred
to workplaces here at home as Durham
Region’s communities lure new industries
and businesses to their municipalities.
In that regard, the long view is one of
optimism. As Trent establishes itself more
completely in Durham, as UOIT continues
to grow in stature and draw new students,
and as Durham College grows its roots ever
deeper, young people here at home will be
able to learn professions and trades on a
par with other regions, but at a fraction of
the traditional cost for out-of-region post-
secondary education.
A brighter future for a vast majority of
young adults in Durham Region does
indeed lie ahead. The possibilities are lit-
erally endless. And it’s a made-in-Dur-
ham solution that acknowledges the future
with keen motivation, a strong educational
foundation and a commitment to knowl-
edge, innovation and success.

Pickering and Ajax switch
number of representatives
BY CRYSTAL CRIMI
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Pickering is losing a Catho-
lic school board trustee and Ajax is gain-
ing one, following a slight shift in the
board’s electoral population.
The change in Catholic board repre-
sentation is effective
for the 2010 election,
and for any by-elec-
tion which immedi-
ately follows, accord-
ing to a report pre-
sented at a March 29
special meeting held
specifically to deal
with the reassign-
ment.
“It’s not a thing
where there’s any
choice,” said Paul
Pulla, the board’s director of education,
in an interview.
The option was the only one trustees
could choose after designating north
Durham as a low population area and
allocating one trustee to represent it as
a whole, Mr. Pulla said.
Without the designation, its electoral
population there is not enough to give it
even one trustee. The area has received
the designation since 1997.
“It sort of tied our hands,” said Pickering
Trustee Jim McCafferty in an interview
after the board meeting, regarding the
choice to designate the north as a low
population area.
The only way around the loss of a
Pickering trustee would have been to
eliminate the single representative for
Uxbridge, Scugog, and Brock, and split
them up to be grouped with the south-
ern municipalities, Trustee McCafferty
said.
The number of trustees is based on the
board’s electoral population, which is
around 94,000. About 100,000 is needed
to be eligible for a ninth member.
Although Pickering and Ajax have
always been close in their electoral pop-
ulation, this year there was enough of a
change to tilt the scale.
“The trend over the last previous two
elections was in that direction,” Mr. Pulla
said.
The difference in their voters is about
600 people. Student population does not
impact the trustee allocation.
“Whoever gets elected is going to be
busy,” Trustee McCafferty said. “But it’s
in the same situation as Janice Oldman
is in Ajax (right now).
“I hate to lose a trustee in Pickering
but that’s the way the electoral is split,”
he added.
Both Pickering trustees and Oshawa
Trustee Fred Jones voted against the new
distribution motion, Trustee McCaffer-
ty said. The five other trustees were in
favour.

Portable bladder scanner
for complex continuing
care unit
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- The Ajax-Pickering hospi-
tal spent the final bit of money from the
first Mayor’s Gala Monday, and a num-
ber of people came out to celebrate.
The last $12,000 from the 2005 gala
purchased a portable bladder scanner
for Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hos-
pital, specifically for the complex con-
tinuing care unit, which recently moved
to a newly-opened floor above the emer-
gency department.
The annual gala, hosted by Pickering
Mayor Dave Ryan, has been going strong
ever since the 2005 inaugural event. The
theme in 2005 was the Canadian Year of
the Veteran.
Tracy Paterson, vice president of
development for the Rouge Valley Foun-
dation, explained the hospital chose to
carefully spend the funds from the first
event on much-needed smaller equip-
ment.
“Bit by bit, the department has been
spending the money on the things they
need,” she said.
The Mayor’s Gala has raised more than
$500,000 since 2005. The gala continu-
ously supports the hospital, as well as
different local causes chosen each year.
Ms. Paterson said the donation going
to the CCU is quite fitting, since many of
the patients are veterans.
“I’ve certainly seen a lot of our friends
from the Legion here over the years,” she
said.
Dr. Romas Stas, associate chief of staff,
explained the portable bladder scanner,
an ultrasound machine used to calcu-
late the bladder volume in a patient, is a
non-invasive technology.
In the past, he said, bladder volume
was measured by catheterization, which
was painful and could lead to infection.
They were also time consuming for the
attending nurse.
“It’s great for us and it’s great for the
patients that we all look after,” he said.
He thanked the mayor and the corpo-
rate sponsors for their continuous gen-
erosity.
Mayor Ryan said in reality “I’m a con-
duit. I’m very proud, pleased and happy
I am able to attract great corporate spon-
sors.”
He reminded those in attendance that
the 2010 Mayor’s Gala will have an Ara-
bian Nights theme.
“We’re going to have another great gala
this year,” he said.
Ms. Paterson took the time to recog-
nize volunteers in the spirit of National
Volunteer Week. She thanked the auxil-
iary volunteers who have always been a
big help to the hospital, as well as Mayor
Ryan, and the corporate sponsors who
were in attendance, including represen-
tatives from the Ontario Power Genera-
tion, Scotiabank and Tribute Communi-
ties.
“All of these people support us in a vol-
unteer sense,” she said.

hand at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital on April 19. The bladder scanner will reduce the number of catheterizations

Employment Ontario Programs are funded in part by
the Government of Canada
NEED A
NEW DIRECTION?
to learn more about other commu-
nities across Canada, and to learn
new skills, develop a stronger sense
of community and to experience
Canada’s diversity first-hand.
Kysa Bashir is also excited for the
opportunity, a chance to see the
way of life in a different part of the
country. “I thought it’d be a good
experience to see how other com-
munities live and how the students
live their lives,” she said.
She added her mother, who’s
originally from Iran, is happy that
her daughter will experience life
outside of her day-to-day life, and
is often concerned with the bubble
that youth often find themselves in.
James Blair, the teacher organiz-
ing the trip, explained a large part
of the exchange will be a focus on
recycling. Since Durham has an
elaborate recycling program, the
students plan to share their knowl-
edge on the subject, and perhaps
show the Waswanipi students how
to expand their own.
Mr. Blair is confident Dunbarton
students will glean important infor-
mation from the Waswanipi kids.
They’ll also focus on growing and
eating local foods, he said, and he
hopes the two groups can open up
a farmer’s market, an initiative the
Dunbarton students started last
year. “The goal to this is to enhance
youth experiences,” he said. “They
are to plan, organize, advertise and
make their community open for the
folks coming to visit.”
Dunbarton student Matthew
Gregory, who is not going on the
exchange himself, but has been
heavily involved in the planning pro-
cess, has made contacts with local
politicians, such as Pickering-Scar-
borough East MP Dan McTeague,
to let them know the students will
be in Pickering.
Matthew said although the stu-
dents will get to see Toronto attrac-
tions such as the CN Tower, and
other parts of downtown, the goal is
to show them simply how students
live their lives in Durham.
“We’re trying to keep the activities
local in Pickering and show them
what we actually do every day,” he
said.
Even when they go downtown,
Mr. Blair said, they’ll take the GO
train to see how transit works in
Durham.
The students will also come to
Dunbarton for a day, will hopeful-
ly catch a Toronto Blue Jays game,
see Kensington Market, see the
Pickering waterfront, visit Ontario
Power Generation, catch a rugby
game and do the simple stuff kids
do, including bowling.
Principal Carol Maher-Hawken
called the program unique and said
the students have been planning it
since the fall.
“It’s such a great opportunity for
the students that are taking part,”
she said.

DURHAM -- Just more than 600 Durham Region
employees made the provincial “sunshine list”,
including 405 police officers and personnel.
The list includes anyone who works in the public
sector and makes more than $100,000 a year.
The top Durham earner was the Region’s chief
administrative officer Garry Cubitt, who was paid
$292,249.51 in 2009. That’s up from the $271,106.53
Mr. Cubitt earned in 2008.
The number of $100,000 earners jumped signif-
icantly in 2009 over the previous year, when there
were 276 employees above the mark, including 158
with the police. There were 614 last year.
Garth Johns, the Region’s human resources com-
missioner, defends the number of people on the
list. “I don’t think there’s anything particularly
remarkable about it. Last year, a number were hov-
ering around the mark,” Mr. Johns says.
With $100,000 the cutoff, “Now, there’s a whole
whack on the list.”
He noted $100,000 is “still a lot of money. The line
was set 15 years ago. It becomes less meaningful as
time goes on. But, it’s still a lot of money.”
If the mark had risen with inflation over the past
15 years, it would now be about $130,000, he says.
“I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t see 600 people over
that mark,” Mr. Johns states. “From our side, noth-
ing unusual has happened.”
Durham Regional Police Chief Mike Ewles made
$237,951.82 last year.
Another top earner was Dr. Robert Kyle, the
Region’s medical officer of health, who made
$284,117.95, up from the $216,793.72 he earned in
2008.
Mr. Johns said the provincial government and the
Ontario Medical Association “negotiated a revised
salary schedule for medical officers of health
because they were running so short of them.”
The Province is paying for the increase in Dr.
Kyle’s salary, but the increase “is recorded by us.”

Making Backyard Dreams a Reality
Spring is finally here! Now is the perfect time to rejuve-
nate your lawn, spruce up your garden with nutrient-rich
soil, and make your dreams of expanding your living
space into the outdoors a reality. Arnts Topsoil, The Land-
scape Supplier has been the source for landscaping sup-
plies in the Durham Region and GTA for over 40 years.
Using a high quality Topdressing soil is the key to a
green, healthy lawn you can enjoy through the summer
and fall. Topdressing and seeding your lawn will keep
your turf thick which helps it resist insects and weeds.
Arnts Topsoil’s Topdressing is a fine blend of Sandy Loam,
Peatloam for moisture retention, Composted Manure for
nutrient value, and Composted Pine Mulch Fines to lower
the pH to an optimum growing range. Begin by raking the
lawn to remove thatch. Spread a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of Arnts’
premium Topdressing soil on your existing lawn. Spread
grass seed (several choices are available depending on
the application site), rake lightly, and follow with a deep
and infrequent watering schedule. Early morning is the
best time to water the lawn.
Adding fresh Triple Mix soil to your gardens each
spring gives your plants a good boost to start the growing
season. But not all Triple Mixes are created equal. Arnts
Topsoil understands the importance of having a good soil
foundation for a garden. Arnts’ Triple Mix Garden Soil is
composed of just the right blend of quality ingredients to
form the basis for a flourishing garden.
In addition to a wide variety of soils and aggregates,
Arnts Topsoil also provides the best selection of natural
flagstone and rockery, decorative gravels, interlocking
paving stones and garden walls, slabs, curbs, steps, pond
supplies, and much more. This extensive product selection,
combined with an abundance of visual displays, inspires
creative ideas for distinctive landscape designs. Helpful
staff, brochures and videos, Do-It-Yourself Seminars, and
services such as delivery, equipment rental, and free esti-
mates on products are available to help you through every
step of your project.
Arnts will be hosting a free Do-It-Yourself Unilock semi-
nar demonstrating the installation of interlocking pavers
and garden walls. Join us on Saturday, April 24th at
10:00 a.m. at the Pickering location - 2490 Brock Road

Advertising FeatureG&Home,
For homeowners, few things symbolize the
arrival of spring more than the annual trek up
the ladder to clean out the gutters. Though
few look forward to cleaning the gutters, it’s
even less fun for those who get hurt doing
so. To avoid turning an afternoon cleaning
the gutters into an afternoon at the emergen-
cy room, consider the following safety tips.
* Inspect the ladder. Make sure the lad-
der is stable, all steps are still intact and not
wobbly, and enlist a helper to hold the ladder
if possible.
* Don’t become Stretch Armstrong. Avoid
an unnecessary safety risk by reaching too
far when cleaning out the gutters. While get-
ting down off the ladder and moving it might
seem redundant and tiresome, it’s also safe
and can help homeowners avoid a fall.
* Don’t just use hands. Many times hands
can do an adequate job of cleaning out the
gutters all on their own. However, some-
times leaves and other debris in gutters can
be very stubborn, requiring a tool such as
a screwdriver to remove. Wear a tool belt
when cleaning gutters to avoid having to go
down the ladder and fi nd a tool. Also, if no
tool is readily available, chances are you will
attempt to remove stubborn leaves and de-

bris by hand, increasing the chances you will
lose your balance and fall in the process.
* Don’t do it alone. Whenever possible, it’s
best to have a helper on hand when clean-
ing gutters. If no one can be outside help-
ing, someone should at least be inside and
checking on you at regular intervals to en-
sure you’re safe. Falling while cleaning the
gutters is bad enough, but doing so with no
one around could prove disastrous.

Every spring, homeowners head outside to take stock
of how the winter treated their lawn. Homeowners in
areas that experience heavy snow or rainfall each win-
ter likely do not look forward to this inventory, fear-
ful of what another harsh winter did to their property.
Fallen tree branches, frozen ground and winter wind
storms can do a number on even the most well-mani-
cured lawns, turning a summertime labor of love into a
nightmare.
While homeowners might not be able to do anything
about the weather, there are ways to revitalize a lawn
each spring. And you don’t have to be an accomplished
landscaper to handle the task. The following tips can
help bring your luscious lawn back to life, helping
make winter a distant memory.
* Remove all debris from your yard. Debris includes
any trash in the yard, wood, large roots, fallen branch-
es, and even stones. The presence of trash such as bro-
ken glass or even faded paper products such as cups or
bags is not only unsafe for the environment, but it can
prove harmful to anyone who might be out in the yard
once your grass grows, especially if you have children.
Oftentimes, winter winds can blow trash from nearby
garbage cans across the yard, no matter how neatly ho-
meowners put out their trash.
* Smooth the soil. Once all debris been removed, ex-
amine the soil for any abnormalities that might need to
be smoothed out. Use a spade or rake to smooth any ar-
eas that aren’t up to par. Next you’ll want to loosen the
soil as well, something that can be done with a garden
rake. Any unsightly areas, such as humps or ditches,
should either be smoothed out or fi lled in, depending
on which is appropriate. This can be done with some
soil and should not prove too costly.
* Consider seeding the lawn if need be. For lawns
that took a particularly harsh beating over the winter,
consider seeding the lawn to help revitalize it. When
seeding a lawn, be sure you choose the right seeds.
Different regions respond better to different types of
grass. But don’t be intimidated if you don’t know the
correct grass to choose. Simply ask a landscaper or
consult a lawn care specialist at a nearby home im-
provement center as to which type of grass is the best
fi t your region and your yard.
When you’re read to seed, the seed can be scattered
by hand for smaller yards, or with a drop spreader for
larger lawns. When spreading with a drop spreader,
use the suggested amount of seed on the bag (even a
little less seed should do the trick) and make sure you
spread out the rows evenly in the same direction. Once
you’ve sowed the fi rst part of your lawn in one direc-
tion, you can crisscross back over that part at a 90-de-
gree angle, making sure you keep equal distance and
calibrate your spreader at the same speed.
* Add mulch for aesthetic and practical appeal.
Mulch helps the soil by allowing it to retain moisture,
making it more conducive to growing healthy grass. It
can also add aesthetic appeal to a lawn. When laying
mulch down, keep the mulch at roughly a quarter-inch
to ensure your lawn will grow in nicely.

Ajax teen makes the cut for TV show
Wilderness survival
challenge ‘amazing’
experience for
adventurous youth
BY MANDI HARGRAVE
mhargrave@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- An Ajax teenager is one
of this year’s challengers trying to
become the ultimate survivor on
season two of Survive This.
The show, with Survivorman
Les Stroud, follows teens aged 13
to 17 as they are tested physical-
ly, emotionally and intellectually
through a series of half-hour epi-
sodes.
“One of the main reasons I want-
ed to be on the show is because
I really like
animals and
nature. The
episode from
the first sea-
son that real-
ly motivated
me to try to
get on the
show was the
swamp epi-
sode,” said
14-year-old
Ian McBain. “Most people would
think ‘Oh gross, a swamp, there’s
leaches and stuff.’ That was the
turning point for me, I was like
‘I have to get on this show, that
looks so fun, so many different
experiences.’”
Before heading out into the wil-
derness to fend for themselves,
the group of teens took a three-
day survival program with David
Arama, a survival expert.
“At survival school, they taught
us everything like shelter build-
ing, how to start a fire, wild edi-
bles, compass using -- things
you’d learn at Scouts -- just in
case you haven’t done it before.”
Ian enjoys being outdoors and
spends quite a bit of time at the
Greenwood Conservation Area in
Ajax. With aspirations of being a
biologist, he loves collecting vari-
ous specimens on his outdoor
excursions. His room is full of all
sorts of dead insects, bugs, skulls
and snakeskins.
After describing the experience
as “amazing”, Ian said he’d gladly
go on the show again.
“When I was there, the main
things I learned were to trust
other people even if you have
doubts and that I have to believe
in myself. Before I was kind of
like a wimp. I never wanted to try
anything adventurous, but after
that, I’m trying everything new
and trying rock climbing and
stuff like that.”
Unable to reveal too much
about what took place during the
filming of the show, he said one of
the tougher aspects of surviving
was getting through the nights.
“You had to get over the fact that
you were with a group of strang-
ers essentially and just out in the
wilderness and in wolf and bear
and all these other animal terri-
tories and you only have, if you
have one, a fire to protect you. It’s
kind of difficult at first, but you
get used to it later on.”
The 13-part series began this
week on YTV.

were to trust other people even if you
have doubts and that I have to believe in
myself. Ian McBain

Ajax Creative Arts show
April 23-25
AJAX -- Husband-and-wife artists Don
and Isobel Piggott share the same home,
but she works upstairs and he toils down-
stairs.
That’s probably a good thing, since when it
comes to criticizing each other’s work, Isobel
Piggott says it’s pretty one-sided.
“I don’t criticize his (work) but he criticizes
mine,” she says in an interview at their Ajax
home.
“There’s nothing to criticize in mine,” Don
Piggott retorts. “I try to help her but she won’t
listen.”
His interest in art stretches back to his boy-
hood, when he drew sketches that appeared
in his local newspaper in England. But dis-
covering art was a happy accident for Iso-
bel Piggott. She went to a sewing class at
Ajax High School but it was cancelled, so
she attended an Ajax Creative Arts’ meeting
there instead. Later, when her husband was
going to Oshawa for art lessons, Isobel Pig-
gott came along, saying, ‘If I don’t like it, I
won’t bother’.
She did like it and they have been ACA
members since 1989. Don Piggott is current-
ly serving a stint as president of the club.
“They were all just very nice,” Isobel Pig-
gott says of the first time she went and why
she returned. “If you didn’t want to do any-
thing, you just sat and talked. If you did, they
left you alone.”
As for media, she says she “tried them all to
see what I liked and I still do them all.
“I like landscapes but they don’t like me,”
she quips.
When travelling, she looks for interest-
ing scenes to photograph and subsequently
paint but Isobel Piggott is more likely to cre-
ate the scene from her imagination.
Ajax Creative Arts has around 100 mem-
bers, started in 1966, and it remains one
of the only places around where an artist
can sit down with his or her peers and chat,
work and receive criticism. Club times are
Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 4
p.m. and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
“They work all day and it’s the only chance
they get to paint,” Don Piggott notes of the
evening hours.
The Piggotts will be showing work in the
ACA 2010 Spring Art Show and Sale. It’s April
23 (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.), April 24 (10 a.m. to 6
p.m.) and April 25 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the
Village Community Centre, 22 Sherwood Rd.
W. (at Linton Avenue), in Ajax.
Admission is free and more than 50 local
artists will be displaying their art. As well,
there’s a tea room and a free draw for an orig-
inal painting. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 23, 201019

PICKERING -- Doug Hall’s new book has
certainly caught the attention of some local
residents.
The Pickering

a swanky condo
overlooking Lake
Ontario. Hall him-
self lives in a condo
and, understand-
ably, “interest

around, ‘am I in it?’,” he says in an e-mail. “A
few have caught on that chiliad is a synonym
for millennium.”
In The Chiliad Murder(s), a skeleton is
discovered in the condo’s roof-top storage
room and the residents are told the murder-
er is among them, making everybody a sus-
pect. You can get the book through Chap-
ters in Ajax. Or get an autographed copy
from Hall himself on April 29, when he leads
an Aspiring Writers’ Workshop at the Petti-

at 7 p.m. Hall will speak on how to create
a novel, get published and also share some
of his experience. The workshop is free but
registration is required. Call 905-420-2254.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN
Durham Region Senior Games
set to kick off on Monday
Winners have chance
to attend Ontario Senior
Games in Oshawa
BY BRENT BURRY
bburry@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- If you are 55 and over, you’ve got
a chance to participate in the Durham Region
Senior Games.
There are 15 events and winners from these
summer games, which start April 26, qualify
to participate in Actifest 2010, the provincial
championships. And this year they are being
held in Oshawa starting Aug. 10.
The Durham games run throughout the eight
municipalities in Durham.
Last year, there were approximately 500 par-
ticipants in the games, but this year games
organizers are hoping for an increase.
“We’ve found that there’s a very low percent-
age of seniors in Durham who have ever real-
ly heard of it. So our goal this year is to make
more seniors aware of what we have to offer
and hopefully by doing that we can increase
participation,” said Bob Taylor, chairman of
the games.
Taylor says the card games are the most pop-
ular events.
“Pretty dedicated card players for cribbage,
euchre and bid euchre. But we do have some
pretty good numbers for slo-pitch, mainly
because you have more people on the team.
Also the bowling events, five-pin bowling is a
summer event, we had a pretty good turnout
last year,” said Taylor.
Games such as shuffleboard and lawn bowl-
ing are not as popular, so organizers are trying
to build them up.
Additionally, there will be a new event this
year: pickleball.
“It’s a racketball game, played on a badmin-
ton court with a lower net, played with an
oversized paddle and whiffleball,” said Taylor.
The Durham games experienced some
financial difficulty during the recession, but
Taylor says he thinks they are over the hump.
“Last year, our main concern was financial
stability and we’ve managed to pick up a cou-
ple of corporate sponsors. That helped us out
immensely,” he said.
Registration forms are available at seniors’
centres and Legions in Durham. For more
information, visit www.durhamseniorgames.

Curling is over for another season at Annandale club
Champions
crowned
in men’s
league finals
BY JIM EASSON
Players in the Annandale
competitive men’s league
finals were piped onto the
ice April 13. Eight sheets
saw six division and two
consolation events compet-
ed.
‘A’ division club champi-
ons were Tim March, Chris
VanHuyse, Pat Janssen and
Tyler Anderson who won
the event over the Warren
Leslie foursome. In B, Gerry
Pinkney won over David
Gaudette, in C, Doug Peter-
son over Dan Deschenes,
in D, Wil MacFadyen over
Joe Mundy, in E, Mike Atkin
over Brian Hawke, and in
F, Tim LaRoche over Mike
Potter.
The annual Annan-
dale Last Chance Bonspiel
started on April 17, and 28
teams were guaranteed
three games. Sixteen teams
advanced to the Sunday
breakfast and final games.
Winning the first event
and $600 was the Annan-
dale Mark Kean team over
Annandale’s Arnold Retz.
The second event saw Whit-
by’s Ray Balachoreck over
the Oshawa Golf’s Tom
Clancy, third had Gerry
Pinkney over Bill Goodchild
of Tam, and the fourth event
was tied between David
Lloyd and the Jeff Clark’s
Dalewood team. At the bon-
spiel conclusion and youth
closing banquet, the ice was
turned over to the skaters.
Another Annandale junior
has had success this sea-
son. Joan Moore competed
in three provincial cham-
pionships this winter, win-
ning the bantam mixed on
the Tyler Sagan team out of
the City View Curling Club
in Ottawa. Their team stole
the extra end in an exciting
final. Joan also plays in the
girls’ competitions with the
Carly Howard team, daugh-
ter of Glenn Howard, and
they were at both the ban-
tam and junior provincial
championships. Another
highlight of the season for
the girls was a bonspiel win
in Sweden during the March
break.
If you order tickets to
the Capital One Canadian
Open, tell them ‘Annan-
dale’ and $10 will go to the
club for every ticket sold.
The event is to be held at
the General Motors Centre
in Oshawa from Jan. 26-30,
2011. Tickets are on sale at
the GM Centre box office,
or by phone 1-877-436-
1811. Also, tickets for the
2011 Ontario men’s cham-
pionship in Grimsby Feb.
7-13 are now on sale. Click
the ‘event passes’ at www.
grimsbytankard2011.com
for details. With their week-
ly badge/lanyard concept,
you can share tickets with
friends.
Pickering resident Richard
Hart is vice on the Ontar-
io men’s curling champi-
onship team with Glenn
Howard, Brent Laing and
Craig Savill. The team was
in Dawson Creek, B.C. April
13-18 competing in the final
2009-10 Capital One Grand
Slam of Curling event, the
Grey Power Players’ cham-
pionship. Team Howard
made it to the final eight
qualifiers, but lost to world
champion Kevin Koe, and
collected $7,000. Koe lost
to the 2006 Olympic gold
medal winner Brad Gush-
ue rink who lost the final to
2010 Olympic gold medal
winner Kevin Martin. How-
ever, Howard placed third
in the season performance
ranking with 26 points, and
earned a bonus of $10,000.

Eyes on the ball
OSHAWA -- Megan Ferguson and Noelle Baird of the St. Mary Monarchs went after
a loose ball during an indoor 8-on-8 lacrosse tournament at Durham Indoor Soccer
Centre. The Monarchs lost the game against the All Saints Titans 6-1.
PICKERINGADVERTISING FEATUREDurham Windows and Doors Brings Mobile Showroom To Your Door
Wayne Hutchison brings to the
replacement window and door business a
new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile
Showroom which just may be the only one in
Canada.
“The day is gone when you carried
some brochures and a sample window to
a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I
obtained a retired North
York Mobile Library truck
and installed interior
walls along with all of my
window samples.”
When you call
Durham Windows and
Doors for a free estimate,
Wayne will show up at
your door with his Mobile
Showroom which you’ll
enter by way of a sliding
patio door.
Inside, displayed on the walls, are
the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl
windows which you’re free to operate and
you’ll discover the many special features
including how they can be cleaned without
going outside.
“After being in this business for 26 years, I
can honestly say these are the finest windows
on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple
sealed to reduce
air leakage and
come with heavy
duty hardware.”
All Vinyl
Window Designs
windows come
with Low E Glass
which filters out
the ultraviolet rays
keeping your home cooler in the summer
and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes
and furniture.
All of the windows come with a lifetime
warranty on the frame, hardware and
glass.
Wayne would also like his customers
to know that he does all of the estimates
personally, eliminating the cost of a
salesperson.
Durham Windows and Doors also does all
of its own installations, which ensures that
every customer gets a high quality job done
at the best possible price.
Durham Windows and Doors is located
at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. For more

Yakura bouncing
back from injury
PICKERING -- Ten days prior
his departure for Lima, Peru
for the qualification of the
2010 Youth Olympic Games,
Nyl Yakura suffered an inju-
ry during one of his training
nights, leaving his left ankle
with a second degree sprain.
As he was unable to train,
run or practise for three
weeks, Yakura’s dream to
play badminton at the YOG,
being held in Singapore this
August, was shattered.
But not all was lost.
Despite slightly wob-
bly legs, Yakura returned to
the court and played at the
senior provincial champi-
onships, managing to reach
semifinals in men’s doubles
and mixed doubles.
However, after that his
plan to compete at the Dutch
Junior Open in Holland was
cancelled as well.
Yet another comeback fol-
lowed, though. Recovery
from the injury continued to
progress and he was able to
play at the junior U19 pro-
vincial championships at
Georgian College in Barrie.
Though this is only his first
year U19, Yakura still man-
aged to make the finals in
singles before losing to Ser-
gij Shatenko of Ottawa 21-17
and 21-16.
In the semis, Yakura defeat-
ed Nathan Lee in three long
games.
In the boys’ doubles, the
Pickering resident played

The following e-mail was recently sent to our

"We recently put an ad in the News Advertiser
for a bookkeeper. I was also going to put it in
the Star since I thought I would not get many
replies just from the News Advertiser.
I couldn't believe the number of replies I got
from just running the ad for 3 days. We got 37
resumes. This action has made a believer out of
me and you know how diffi cult that can be."
