Mr. Gazarek bought the dealership, Sher- idan Chevrolet Cadillac Ltd. at Kingston Road, east of Brock Road, in 1977, and fondly recalled the opening day and the great sense of stability he felt for his fami- ly, including his children Lesley and Brent, who he hoped would one day take over the company. “I’ve devoted my life to this business,” he said in an interview at the empty dealer- ship. He also bought Saturn Saab of Pickering, where his daughter, Lesley Gazarek, was dealer principal before everything changed, and the two were told to close down. Mr. Gazarek was told by General Motors of Canada to shut down his dealership on Aug. 28, 2009, as the auto company closed the doors on 42 per cent of its dealerships in order to qualify for a bailout from the RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND PICKERING -- Jerry Gazarek was the owner and president of the Sheridan GM deal- ership on Kingston Road that was shut down in August 2009 as a result of the car company’s cuts. Canadian Owned & Operated Since 1996 Expenses going to council Monday for approval BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Pickering council expenses have gone up once again this year. Council as a whole racked up an expense bill of $68,367 in 2009, compared to $59,936 in 2008. Politicians’ total bills, including benefits, salary, per diems and car allowances, cost taxpayers $395,932. On top of expenses, each council mem- ber made $30,132, received $11,135 in benefits, $3,014 in per diems and a $10,800 limit in car allowance, which they all used. The only differences are Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell, who received $8,204 in benefits, and Mayor Dave Ryan who made $72,316, received $18,247 in benefits and $15,147 for a car allowance. Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick John- son was the biggest spender for the sec- ond straight year, spending $23,723. Those expenses included $4,528 on his cellphone and $7,505 on his newsletter and postage. “The service I provide my community is within budget, in line and it does the job,” he said, adding he’s readily available to constituents, provides thorough newslet- ters and has the biggest ward in Pickering. Expenses were passed at the executive committee meeting April 12 without dis- cussion, and will go to council Monday, April 19 for final approval. The young man, now 18, used his vehicle as a weapon when he acceler- ated into a group of youths, leaving two with fatal injuries, Ontario Court Justice Joseph De Freitas said in sentencing him to 20 months in custody Thursday. The total sentence given the young man was 33 months, just three months shy of the maximum allowed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth, whose identity is protected under the act, was given credit for three months spent in custody after the incident in February of 2009. He was ordered to serve 10 months of community supervision following his jail time and is prohibited from driving for 10 years. As the sentence was announced, the youth’s mother dabbed tears from her eyes. No relatives of the victims were present in court. The youth pleaded guilty in January to two counts of criminal negligence caus- ing death. Court heard the youth and another young man with whom he’d had an ongoing dispute had agreed to meet in Ajax on Feb. 27, 2009 to settle the mat- ter. Both arrived at a high school accom- panied by groups of friends, who moved on to nearby Hermitage Park, ready for a fight. The two young men talked the matter out and agreed there was no need for violence but that didn’t satisfy the other youths and a brawl ensued, court heard. At one point, the youth got into a vehi- cle and drove away from the scene, but turned around and came speeding back, mounting a snow bank and slamming into a group of combatants. Two youths, aged 15 and 17, were thrown several metres and sustained fractures to their legs and skulls, court heard. Both young men died in hospital. The youth gathered up a friend who had been stabbed and fled the scene in another vehicle, which was stopped nearby by Durham police. Witness accounts and forensic evi- dence indicated the youth’s vehicle was accelerating and brakes were not applied before the collision, Justice De Freitas noted Thursday. “He had the pedal to the metal,” the judge said. “Witnesses told police they could hear the engine revving and the tires squealing.” In his ruling, the judge rejected a defence request for a non-custodial sen- tence, noting that had the accused not been a young person at the time of the incident, he’d be facing a substantial prison term. The youth can apply to have the cus- todial portion of his sentence reviewed in six months. Depending on his prog- ress in custody, the judge could agree to a reduction in jail time. “I would certainly entertain an appli- cation at the end of this calendar year to vary that sentence,” Justice De Freitas said. Given the waves of warm weather we’ve been having, I carried out a spring ritual three weeks early -- filled and hung up the hummingbird feeders, just in case any ruby-throats arrive back before May. I’m not the only one thinking about these tiny, jeweled, long-distance migrants. When Mike Noonan e-mailed in early April, wondering when was the best time to put up his nectar feeder, I wrote back about the first-week-of-May rule. But by the time Pat Waters and three other readers had asked the same thing, I decided it really might be a good idea to get nectar feeders going early this year. Especially when Skip Poitier sent me a link to a website tracking ruby-throat migra- tion, and some had already been spotted at Point Pelee. Cool weather would keep nectar fresh, I figured, while warm weather would bring on the hummingbirds -- and the flowers they feed on. Beating your wings 50 to 70 times a sec- ond uses up a lot of energy, and they fuel their flying with nectar from all sorts of blossoms, including apple and other fruit trees, and with protein from many small insects. They often sip sap oozing from wells drilled in tree bark by sapsuckers, which arrived back in Ontario two weeks ago. Cold snaps aren’t as dangerous for ruby- throats as they are for swallows, because hummers can enter a state of torpor, slow- ing down their metabolism as they wait for the world to warm up again. As soon as it does, they go zipping about the garden, or a clearing at the cottage, staking claim to feeders and flower beds and chasing off all competition. A male ruby-throat performing his plunging pendulum courtship flight in front of a female is one of the most awe- some sights of spring. He’s all show and swagger, doing noth- ing to help out with child rearing. The female constructs a three-centimetre nest on top of a branch, weaving bits of lichen together with spiderwebs, and lays two white eggs. Some ruby-throats overwinter at the tip of Florida, but most spend half the year in Central America and the Yucatan Penin- sula. They’re the only hummingbird spe- cies that flies 800 kilometres back and forth across the Gulf of Mexico to breed throughout eastern North America. Hummingbird nectar is four parts water to one part sugar. If you plan to keep a jar in the fridge, it’s a good idea to bring the water to a boil, remove it from the heat, add the sugar and cool. You don’t need red food colour- ing. You do need to wash feeders regular- ly. Planting butterfly bushes, bee balm, zinneas, cardinal flowers, impatiens, Mexican sunflowers and other showy blooms is key to having hummingbirds hang around your yard all summer. Check out: http://www.hummingbirds. net/index.html. Nature queries: 905-725-2116 or mcarney@interlinks.net. Durham outdoors writer Margaret Carney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far- flung corners of the planet. Get ready for the ruby-throat hummingbird’s annual return Margaret Carney P rogress, but some distance yet to go on accessibility issues To hear Ontario Lt.-Gov. David Onley tell it, we’ve come a long way in our society in addressing disability and geriatric issues for citizens. Mr. Onley should know. He lives with partial paralysis after suffering a bout of polio as a child and has faced the histor- ical physical and societal barriers those living with a disability confront daily. His parents were active in the Brotherhood Foundation that founded a retirement and nursing home in Toronto in the 1970s. The good news is Mr. Onley pointed to Lakeridge Health in Durham Region as an example of a progressive, thoughtful approach to dealing with aging citizens and those with disabilities through the use of accessible architecture, assistive devic- es and embracing attitudes. Mr. Onley was in Ajax as the keynote speaker at a Bridging the Gap in Geriatric Care conference organized by Lakeridge Health. And as the lieutenant-governor noted, a society that sees and welcomes its elder- ly or disabled citizens into malls and parks and other public places is a soci- ety embracing reforms to make the plac- es they take for granted more accessible to others. In short, it is a society that embraces its obligation to make the world a safer, more accessible place for all of its citizens. Durham Region, like so many commu- nities in the Greater Toronto Area, has its growing share of elderly citizens, some of whom also struggle with disability. The Ontario government is still implement- ing measures contained in the Ontarians with Disabilities Act and while Mr. Onley asserts much progress has been made in dealing with the barriers, much more work can be done. Lakeridge Health is leading the way in approaching health care for seniors and those living with disabilities. Municipali- ties around Durham Region also continue to find ways to reduce barriers and create more accessible and welcoming commu- nities. We can all take a role in raising aware- ness, demanding change and being part of a community that embraces reforms to allow seniors, for example, more oppor- tunity to remain active and engaged in their communities, or disabled residents to enjoy greater mobility and freedom in their neighbourhoods. The lieutenant-governor, by visiting Durham and recognizing the efforts being made here at home, provides greater motivation for us to collectively embrace changes that are underway and help cre- ate a society that provides a better quality of life and is accessible to everyone. - Durham Region Media Group durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 20107 AP Remember When Kids Knew Exactly What To Do When Told To “Go Fly A Kite”. KAWARTHA LAKES -- Former Peterbor- ough Mayor Sylvia Sutherland has been charged with careless driving in connec- tion with a fatal car crash that killed an Ajax woman. According to City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, on April 5 at about 2 p.m., a two- vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Hwy. 35 and Boundary Road just north of the Hwy. 115/35 split. Police say a pas- senger van travelling north on Hwy. 35 and a Subaru SUV travelling west on Bound- ary Road collided in the intersection. An adult female passenger in the van was pro- nounced dead at the scene. The intersection is controlled by a stop sign at Boundary Road. Police identified the woman who died as 46-year-old Min-Hua Shao of Ajax. The driver of the northbound van has been identified as Wei-Ling Shi, 47, also of Ajax. Ms. Sutherland, 69, has been identified as the driver of the Subaru. She was taken to Lindsay’s Ross Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. OPP say Ms. Sutherland, of Peterbor- ough, has been charged with careless driv- ing contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. She is scheduled to appear in court June 8 in Lindsay. -- Torstar news services POLICE Former Peterborough mayor faces charges in crash that killed Ajax woman PICKERING -- There’s still a chance to sign up for the City of Pickering’s spring leisure programs. Every single nickel and dime generated by Royal Lepage Connect Realty Brokerage’s garage sale goes to support our local shelter, The Herizon House, and provincial and national programs to stop the cycle of violence. All the money and effort goes back to the cause because Royal LePage underwrites 100 per cent of the administration costs. Members of the community are encouraged join in and de-clutter for a cause. They can donate their gently used items to our offi ce on 335 Bayly Street, in Ajax. For great deals for a great cause, be sure to visit our sale. Look for the balloons and bargains decorated at Ajax offi ce for a fun day of shopping. A GM spokesperson declined comment since the matter is now the subject of a class-action lawsuit currently before the courts. “It was devastating having this business taken from us,” Lesley Gazarek said. The news came just two years after a mas- sive renovation and brand-new addition worth nearly $5 million. “I lost money like you wouldn’t believe,” Mr. Gazarek said. The renovation was so nice, GM shot a commercial there not long before he was told to close, he pointed out. “That was the idea in investing so dramat- ically,” Mr. Gazarek said. “We were prepar- ing for the future.” Now Mr. Gazarek is part of a massive class-action lawsuit, consisting of 215 GM dealers forced to close their dealerships, seeking $750 million in damages. The suit claims GM Canada breached franchise laws in connection with the agreements between the company and the dealers it chose for elimination. The claim also states that the dealers “were the only significant stakeholders in the GM auto bailout which were denied a voice in the restructuring.” Regardless, it said, many of the dealers have a right under provincial franchise laws to cancel the agreements. “They threw us all under the bus,” Mr. Gazarek said. Between his two dealerships alone, around 100 employees lost their jobs “and I’d say 50 per cent of them haven’t found meaningful employment,” he said. “It was illogical, irrational and very self- serving,” he said. Mr. Gazarek’s son, Brent Gazarek, said it didn’t only hurt his family, but the custom- ers they’d been serving for 32 years. “You could imagine buying a car and three weeks later the place is shut down,” said the former sales manager. Jerry Gazarek didn’t say how much GM gave him to close but “It wasn’t enough to pay for the terminations.” This hasn’t stopped him from looking at his other options. He’s been meeting with City of Pickering planners regarding plans for a new commercial plaza set to go where the empty dealership now sits. But so far, no one’s shown any interest. “I’m just work- ing on hope and a prayer that I can come up with a prospect,” he said. It was illogical, irrational and very self-serving. This year, make spring cleaning more than just tidy- ing and dusting, take this opportunity to organize and upgrade all aspects of your house. A “big clean and fi x-up” can be daunting, but the task can be manageable – maybe even enjoyable. Here are some tips and ideas on how to wake up and revive your hibernating home. Organize the process of organizing Before diving right into cleaning, sorting and fi xing, go into each room and make a list of what needs to be done in that particular room and then do the same for the exterior of your house. This list will serve as your checklist and will ensure that everything gets clean, put in its place and fi xed properly. Have an “Aha!” moment with your lights One of the reasons people start spring cleaning is be- cause they can see the winter grime in the new light of spring. You can have great lighting in your home every season. Make one of your fi rst jobs of spring cleaning to change the light bulbs in your home to energy ef- fi cient bulbs. Choose an energy saving light bulb, like the Philips EnergySaver. These compact fl uorescent lamps (CFLs) use up to 75% less energy than the stan- dard incandescent bulb, and can last up to 11 years. Debbie Cromb, marketing manager for Philips Light- ing indicates “changing to Philips EnergySaver CFLs not only helps brighten your home, but is also good for the environment and they help save you money”. Include nooks and crannies In addition to the obvious dusting, vacuuming and re-painting, make sure to clean and inspect the small spaces that you rarely include in your cleaning regi- men. Make sure to dust refrigerator coils, clean curtains and drapes, check heating and air conditioning fi lters, update your fi rst aid kit, wash the deck and porches and check outdoor light fi xtures to ensure there is no damage to wires and connections. Spring is a great time to take stock of your home and its contents. Once you have fi nished the cleaning, checking and fi xing, you can sit back and relax to en- joy the warmer months in a clean and energy effi cient home. www.newscanada.com Turn winter blues into spring greens To advertise in Home Lawn & Garden call Donna McNally at 905.683.5110 ext. 241 Relax. THOUSANDS SPENT IN UPGRADES Check out these and many more homes on Car rally fundraiser April 17 BY PARVANEH PESSIAN ppessian@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Humane Society of Durham Region staff will soon be building its way to a new location to house the ani- mals in its care, but first it needs the paws to stand on. A sign has recently gone up at the shelter’s future location, at the southeast corner of Wentworth Street and William Smith Drive in Whitby, displaying blank paws that will be painted in as fundraising goals are reached. “People want to see where we’re at and what’s happening so it’s a great way to get that out there,” said shelter president Karin Martens, who took the first step this week by painting in one paw -- representing $50,000 raised. “I’m almost ready to paint in the second one, too, but I thought even to paint the first one is really significant.” The Humane Society’s Oshawa building was destroyed on Dec. 17, 2008, in a fire that killed more than 100 animals. The shelter is currently operating out of a temporary location at 79 Taunton Rd. W. in Oshawa. With each paw representing $50,000 raised, the shelter is working toward about $700,000, which is the organization’s proportional share to reach the project’s $2 million grand total. Federal and provincial governments will each provide about $700,000 as part of the infrastructure stimulus fund. Members of the animal care agency dropped by a Whitby council meeting in February, asking for financial assistance from the Town to ensure the project gets underway in time for an April 1 deadline. Councillors decided the request would be more appropriately handled on a regional level, and shelter staff will soon be sending a letter to the Region of Durham. “I’m trying to get out to people that this is a one-time thing,” Ms. Martens said. “We won’t be expanding or anything like that. We just need to make this happen now.” The Humane Society is currently caring for about 70 ani- mals, with some of them at the temporary spot and others scattered across the region at various kennels, foster homes or animal services locations. To assist staff in raising its share of the expenses, a car rally fundraiser is at the new location on Saturday, April 17 at 9:30 a.m. Registration is required and all participants will need a digital camera, pencil and a map of Durham Region. The cost to register is $37.50 per person. LIVE MUSIC Pickering band advances to Bandwarz finals Wake the Fallen wins a close one in Oshawa DURHAM -- Pickering band Wake the Fallen emerged as the top band in Week 3 of Bandwarz last week- end. In a contest described in a press release as “very close,” the metal group beat out last year’s Bandwarz champ, Lead Sled Rocket, and oth- ers on April 11 at the Karma Lounge in Oshawa. And while fan voting can still send the bands that didn’t win to the finals, Wake the Fallen’s win means it has a guaranteed spot in the June 13 final showcase, joining Whitby bands The Joint and Hotel Royal. Bands that do not move on have a chance to take one of the two wild card spots in the finals. Fans can visit www.rogerstv.com and vote for their favourite non-advancing band to win a wild card spot. The winners will be named before the final. There are three showcases remaining in the Bandwarz 2010 competition, all held at the Karma Lounge, 394 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa. On April 25, bands Triton, Conflict- ing Plaid, Songbird, Backhanded Compliment, Disphraxia and Shark Week will vie for a spot in the finals. The final two showcases are May 16 and 30. Tickets are $10 in advance and available through participating bands, or $12 at the door on show day. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the music starts at 6 p.m. SUPPLIED PHOTO DURHAM -- Wake the Fallen celebrates after a Bandwarz win. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 201018 AP Friday, April 16, 2010 Ajax & Pickering Locations Flyers in Today’s Paper If you did not receive your News Advertiser/fl yers OR you are interested in a paper route call Circulation at 905-683-5117. Joanne Jackson’s The Big Wait will be shown on OMNI 2 Television on April 18 at 7 p.m. The documentary follows three foreign- trained doctors, Dr. Sara Chhetry from Nepal, Dr. Chander Gupta from India and Dr. Mohamed Meghji from Kenya, as they work their way through the re-education and accreditation process of becoming a doctor in Canada. “I found three doctors that stepped for- ward and said they wanted to be in the film because it could be interesting and it could help other doctors get licensed,” said Jack- son, executive producer and co-director. She met with the doctors and interviewed them about their experiences and struggles. For one of the doctors, it meant moving to the U.S., where getting a medical residency is easier. But all three doctors must endure long hours of studying and time away from family and friends. A medical residency is required to practise medicine as a physi- cian. The filming began in 2005, when Jackson attended the University of Toronto’s medi- cal school program for foreign-trained doc- tors, helping them brush up on skills before their written exam. Jackson also teamed up with the Association of International Phy- sicians and Surgeons of Ontario, attending their workshops to look for subjects to fol- low. The idea for the documentary came when Jackson met Dr. Camelia Trambitis, a pedia- trician from Romania. Dr. Trambitis was laid off from her job after helping a doctor in his clinic, where she made just $15 per hour. “She was frustrated with the application process for foreign-trained physicians,” said Jackson. “I thought, ‘what a waste of her tal- ent and skills, when we have such a doctor shortage in the area’.” Dr. Trambitis eventually got her license. In Canada, there are about 5,000 foreign- trained doctors trying to get their licences. The race for these spots is very competitive, some of the doctors are strong enough to make it, but many don’t. As a result, some give up trying to get into a medical-related field. Jackson and Jari Osborne directed the film and Doug Raby, also of Ajax, was the director of photography. Jackson and Raby also worked together on the documentary Long Haul Big Hearts, which won the Crys- tal Heart Directors Award at the Hearts and Minds Film Festival in Dover, Delaware three years ago. Raby directed and Jackson was the executive producer on the film, which documented then-Bowmanville resident Peter Bruno and his blind dog’s second trip to the area devastated by Hurricane Katrina, hauling tractor trailer loads of goods collect- ed by donors in Durham Region. “You must be really passionate about the subject that you’re working on because you’re going to live with it for a long time,” Jackson said. The newest entry into Major Series Lacrosse league this season will be holding an open tryout at the Ajax Community Centre on Sat- urday, April 17 with sessions scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. General manager Paul St. John is expecting 40-50 players on the day, including one pay- ing his own way in from Edmonton for Sat- urday’s session. Another player from Calgary is expected next weekend, as word of the opportunity spreads. “What we’re hoping to accomplish is to find three or four diamonds in the rough,” he says. “We feel there is some untapped talent in Sr. B, guys that can play at the Major level but either didn’t get a chance or don’t have enough confidence that they can do that. To have an open tryout, this could be their only opportunity to make a major club.” The other established teams in the league already have a core of players to start with, add some draft picks, and pick up a couple of extra players to fill some holes. In the case of the Rock, being a first-year club, they have a nucleus of 12-15 players expected to crack the roster. It’s the other 10 spots they are look- ing to fill. “If they are in these tryouts this weekend, that would be fabulous,” says St. John. “If not, we will keep our eyes open and see what’s out there. “These guys have ambitions to play Major because they want to play pro someday. It tends to be now if you are playing Major you have a lot better chance of playing pro.” Saturday’s sessions will be skills oriented, with a scrimmage planned for Wednesday from 8-10. To get on the list for a tryout, contact St. John at pstjohn@grosnor.com or psjs@sympatico. ca. PICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURECrawford & Sons: Fixing Basement Leaks Right the First Time A leaking basement is frustrating and expensive – and it’s not something you want to have to fix repeatedly. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation.
