We have legit- imate concerns that have not been addressed.” The new southeast collector trunk sewer for the York-Durham Sewage sys- tem is being built to accommodate York Region’s future growth in Rich- mond Hill, Aurora, Markham, New- market and Vaughan. The sewage is taken to the Duffin Creek Water Pol- lution Control Plant in Pickering. “Very tough conditions on this sewer project will help conserve water while ensuring the environment and human health are protected,” said environment minis- ter John Gerretsen in a press release. “We can and must protect Ontario’s environment while building and operating the infrastructure nec- essary to manage growth.” Mr. Gerretsen also denied a number of requests for a hearing by the Environmental Review Tribunal, calling it unnecessary. “Having considered the purpose of the Envi- ronmental Assessment Act, the approved terms of reference, the environmental assess- ment, the ministry review of the environmen- This is the wrong decision. Dozens of cats have been removed from two homes -- one in Oshawa and the other in Pickering -- on Tuesday and Wednesday, leaving the society to cope with cramped conditions and bills to care for the animals. “It’s overwhelming,” says Debby Hough- ton, an investigator with the society, of the two latest cases. She describes the hoarding of cats as an “epidemic. The animals are kept in poor condition.” The society was contacted by the Durham Regional Police about the cats in an apart- ment on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa. They found 25, including six kittens. “There were two people, a man and a woman” living in the apartment. “The place was just a complete mess,” she says, adding she has “no explanation for why there were so many. “Feces were embedded into the floor. There was garbage everywhere, dirt every- where. The stench of urine permeated everywhere,” she states. “It was really dis- gusting conditions.” Some of the cats were “thin and dehydrat- ed. Some were very dirty. We’ve cleaned them up.” The cats are “dismayed right now, but they’ll come around,” Ms. Houghton adds. When food was offered to the cats, “they were literally spread-eagled in their food they were so hungry. “When we put down water, they literally put their whole head in the water, they were so thirsty,” she notes. Six kittens have been placed with foster homes for now, she says. As for charges, “we’ll deal with the ani- mals and then go from there. Some of the people we deal with have issues, so it’s hard to deal with.” In addition to Oshawa, Ms. Houghton says there are “another, I don’t know how many, in Pickering.” It’s estimated there are between 40 and 60 cats in a north Pickering home. Four of the cats from Pickering have been placed with vets for care because “they were so emaciated.” One cat had a large abscess in an ear. “It’s so infected, the cat will probably have to lose its ear.” She isn’t sure if it’s the economy, but “it’s very hard for a lot of people to afford spay- ing or neutering their animals. It can cost up to $200,” Ms. Houghton says. “We’re having a hard time coping with all this because of our shelter issue,” Ms. Houghton notes. The society has space for 65 cats at its cur- rent location and it was overcrowded prior to the cats from Oshawa and Pickering coming in. Ajax-Pickering bowlers raise $45,000 at annual charity event BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX-PICKERING -- Local bowlers came out in force last week to support Big Broth- ers and Sisters of Ajax-Pickering in their signature annual fundraiser, Bowl for Kids Sake. “We’re really thrilled with the turnout, it’s been a great eve- ning, great energy,” said Melanie Stewart, executive director of Big Brother and Sisters Ajax-Pickering. The annual event is the biggest fundraiser for the organization. Teams of families, friends, busi- nesses and service clubs bowled togeth- er at the Rouge Hill Bowling Centre in Scarborough on March 24. “What it does is bring the community together to help support a community cause,” said Ms. Stewart. About 200 people partici- pated and though the final counts are still underway, Ms. Stewart estimates they did far better than last year when $26,000 was raised. “At this point we’re look- ing at $45,000,” she said on Tuesday. “We were hoping for $50,000 so if people want to con- tribute ... they still can.” Ms. Stewart said she’s not sure why turnout was low last year, but changing the event to an evening event as opposed to a weekend one may have helped. “It’s hard to say, I think part of it might be the economy this time last year was pretty bleak,” she said. Lorie-Ann Roxburgh, chief financial offi- cer of Volkswagen Canada, headed up her company’s team. “I just started to volunteer for Big Sis- ters and Brothers, so it’s my first fundrais- ing event and hopefully I’ll get a little sister soon,” said Ms. Roxburgh. She encouraged people to support the organization because she said Big Broth- ers and Sisters is one of the most proactive organizations in helping children before they got into trouble. Colleen Mackenzie of Meridian Credit Services said she was also thrilled with the turnout. “It’s a thousand per cent better than last year.” She was having a blast with two teams from work she’d roped into partici- pating. “I just sent them an e-mail and said OK people, it’s time to get the lead out, how many people are coming?” In addition to bowling, prizes and free food supplied by local restaurants, par- ticipants got to meet local Olympic silver medalist Shelley-Ann Brown, who is an honorary Big Sister. She said she was proud to be affiliat- ed with the organization and stressed the importance of positive role models in achieving goals. “I know first hand that importance of good guidance and mentorship,” she said. United Way turning to the public for help BY RYAN JOSEPH rjoseph@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- The Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge United Way needs the community’s help. It’s looking for people to donate to local charities, which otherwise will be forced to close their doors. The United Way is a non- profit charitable organization that focuses on supporting the healthy development of the community, by funding various agencies. Last year the United Way had a campaign goal of $1.7 million, but fell short of its goal. Each year, charities must fill out an appli- cation form and sub- mit it to the United Way to determine what their needs are. “The recommenda- tions are based on the hierarchy of needs,” said United Way com- munity investment coordinator Barb Fan- nin. “We have seen a substantial increase in needs.” Charities in need of the public’s help are the John Howard Society, Distress Cen- tre Durham, Children’s Aid Society and the YWCA. The CAS not only has seen an increase in clients, but also cases have gotten more serious, such as an increase in suicide calls. There has been an increase in people looking for support after losing a loved one to either a homicide or suicide. The CAS also deals with child abuse and spousal abuse cases. Poverty is another big issue because the cost of living has increased. Therefore a fam- ily with a comfortable income last year might be having a hard time making ends meet this year. “We see the inability to meet the needs of the community,” said Ms. Fannin. The John Howard Society has several dif- ferent programs such as anger management counselling, spousal counselling and child abuse counselling. ”We have more people coming through the doors and less money to work with,” said Bill Fry, executive director at John Howard Society. One of the issues John Howard is facing is not enough money to work with. Therefore it’s forced to take money from the equipment budget because there isn’t enough money to cover salaries and rent for the facilities. As a result, it could be forced to cut down on the number of staff at the Ajax office or close it altogether. “Clients are going to come and want service,” said Mr. Fry. Distress Centre Durham is also in need of dona- tions. It provides people with a 24- hour telephone help line service, crisis call-out pro- gram, community call-out program, suicide and homi- cide survivor sup- port groups, adolescent suicide awareness and community training and education. In the last three years, the centre has seen a 40-per cent increase in service demands, but had to decrease its budget because of cuts the United Way made. “We are the only service that handles any type of problem,” said Distress Centre execu- tive director Victoria Kehoe. In 2009, the Distress Centre saw a 112-per cent increase in suicide-related calls. The centre received 950 suicide calls compared to 230 in 2008. Ms. Kehoe says the centre also goes into local high schools to talk to teens about sui- cide. I’d heard reports of tree swallows via the hotlines, then saw them myself at the Thickson’s Woods Nature Reserve. One, two, three blue-backed, white-bel- lied birds zooming about over the nest boxes in the meadow, chittering as they went. The next day a whole phalanx was careening over Corbett Marsh, scooping up hatching insects. Merlins are back. Familiar piercing cries snapped my attention to the treetops at my sister’s house in the old part of Peterbor- ough, in time to see one of these small gray falcons circling in territorial display. Once a prized sighting on wilderness canoe trips, they’re learning to utilize urban forests to nest and raise their young. At least four pairs nested in Peterborough last summer, and likely as many in Oshawa, Whitby and Bowmanville. Little gulls are back. On what could be the earliest date ever, a few showed up at Oshawa Second Marsh last week and lin- gered. The legendary George Scott put Oshawa on the ornithological map back in 1962 when he found the first nest of this Old World species in the western hemisphere. Every spring handfuls of these small, graceful gulls migrate along the shore of Lake Ontario through Durham, along with great flocks of Bonaparte’s gulls. Aptly named, little gulls are three inches shorter than the similar-looking Bonapar- te’s, and adults have all-dark underwings. Meanwhile, every bay is loaded with red- breasted mergansers on their way north, courting as they go. Dan Kaczynski counted nine red-necked grebes among them the other day -- proof that it’s always worth scanning the lake. Butterflies are out. Lepidoptera expert Jerry Ball has already seen Milbert’s and Compton tortoiseshells, mourning cloaks and green and eastern commas. He and Anne Anthony were on a leisurely tour of some Durham nature hotspots the other morning and by noon already had 57 spe- cies of birds. I saw tiny red blossoms on a beaked hazel bush a week ago. Catkins on the speckled alder are two inches long. Red and silver maples are covered with flowers and the red elderberry are explod- ing into bloom. Buds on balsam poplars -- buds on everything -- are fat and swelling. Someone heard spring peepers a week ago. I can’t wait to see my first turtle basking on a log, my first garter snake tasting the air with its forked red tongue as it feels the sun on its smooth reptile skin for the first time in six months. My husband tilled the garden this week and planted potatoes, lettuce, arugula, peppergrass and onions. That has got to be an all-time early record. What did we ever do to deserve such a glorious start to spring, after such a mild winter? Except for maple-syrup makers, everyone I know is going around with big grins on their faces. A group of Durham Region students plan to deepen those historic ties next month with a trip to mark the 65th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, declared on May 8, 1945 shortly after Canadian troops were instrumental in the liberation of the Neth- erlands. The Durham Region Media Group is join- ing some of those students to record the historic anniversary and help those of us here at home celebrate and commemorate the victory. For the vast majority of Durham Region residents, the Second World War is little more than a section in a history textbook, or a Hollywood movie. Its significance doesn’t resonate the way it has in the past. And that makes it essential that Durham continues to recognize and pay homage to the sacrifice of the young men from Durham’s commu- nities who went off to war, and to those left behind who contributed to the war effort here at home. Canadian troops were instrumental in the liberation of Holland after nearly five years of Nazi occupation. The collective sacrifice is still marked today, however symbolical- ly, with thousands of tulip bulbs shipped to Ottawa by the Dutch royal family every spring. And given the recent controversy sur- rounding the potential loss of historic Sec- ond World War memorabilia and artifacts in an Oshawa collection, it is fundamental to our heritage to ensure that we continue to commemorate our efforts during those years of world conflict. Families around the region are being asked to share the stories of their forebears who helped to write this proud part of our history. Whether through stories passed on from one generation to the next, or arti- facts that illustrate our collective national effort, we hope to help raise awareness of the effort, ignite a passion for our impor- tant role with the Allies in the war and rein- force our belief in and commitment to such Canadian ideals as freedom and democra- cy. Just as Durham Region residents of the day mobilized to confront Nazism and oppres- sion, we hope they will meet this challenge and help to preserve this important compo- nent of our local history. Send us your remembrance. Share with us the artifacts that are a part of your fam- ily history. Help us to raise awareness of the importance of recognizing the past and cel- ebrating our collective achievement. VE Day is not just another day on the cal- endar. It’s an important piece of our past, and one that should forever be commemo- rated. Canadians fought fiercely and proud- ly throughout the Second World War. Let us today remain fierce and proud in our remembrance of their efforts. Sylvia performed to April 17 AJAX -- Man’s best friend creates a lot of problems for a guy in Syl- via. The comedy, presented by Ajax Community Theatre, is at the Vil- lage Community Centre theatre until April 17. “It took a number of years to bring it to the actual stage because (theatre) companies were afraid no actor would want to play a dog,” notes director Heather Warkentin. Set in New York, the premise sees Greg find and bring home to wife Kate a stray dog named Syl- via. But the pooch starts to cause problems in their marriage. “Greg is infatuated with the dog and Kate gets a little jealous,” Warkentin says. “He’s spending more time with the dog than on his work.” Describing his obsession with Sylvia as “(Greg’s) mid-life cri- sis,” she says the trouble the dog causes between the couple results in a trip to a marriage counsellor. Toronto actor Olivia Jon plays Syl- via, Ajacians Jonathan Aiken, Lori Irvine and Andy Arms-Roberts are Greg, Phyllis and Tom, respective- ly. Karen Wiley, of Whitby, is Kate and Pickering’s Charlene LaPalme plays Leslie. To reserve tickets, call 289-892- 4132 or e-mail info@ajaxcommu nitytheatre.com. Cash only pay- ment at the door. The theatre is at 22 Sherwood Rd. W. at Linton Ave- nue (near Church and Kingston). The A.R. Gurney comedy is the final play in ACT’s inaugural sea- son. “We’re making some headway,” Warkentin says of how the first season has gone. “The Town of Ajax has been wonderful to us.” She’s an ACT co-founder and says the invitation sent out when the group started still stands: vol- unteers are welcome. “Don’t be afraid to get involved,” she says. “You can volunteer as lit- tle or as much time as you want.” Volunteers can design and work on sets, hand out fliers, take tick- ets on show nights or help in other ways. The show is April 11 to 24 and you can meet Forgie at the opening reception, April 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. Forgie is showing new works in the show, called Tranquil- ity. It’s a fitting title, since For- gie has said that creating a sense of peace and silence in his work has always been his goal. “There is a peace; you feel comfortable,” he told the News Advertiser last year. “There’s nothing to jar you or impact you, but there’s an underlying, almost haunting, realism.” The gallery is at 62 Old Kings- ton Rd. The Pickering resident is trav- elling far and wide while in his third year as a member of the Canadian mountain bike team. With trips to Las Vegas and Spain already in the books for 2010, this weekend he is competing in Gua- temala. He’s hoping the exposure he is getting and the knowledge he is accumulating will help him get to the podium at the World Championships later this year in Quebec. “It’s definitely helping a lot,” says the 19-year-old of his recent international races. “Learning the different styles of riding and the people I meet when I’m trav- elling help me out a lot. I’m able to take from other people in dif- ferent countries what they know and add it to what I know. “I’ve got friends from all over the world now from travelling.” The trip to Vegas was part of a two-week training camp with the national program, while he also spent three weeks in Spain, cul- minating in a 16th place finish out of 120 riders at the European Cup Tour 2010. The top placing could be an indication of what’s to come this season. “I was happy with it,” he says of the top-20 placing. “It was only my second European race and the tracks are quite different over there than here in North Ameri- ca.” Fraser left for Guatemala earlier this week to help prepare for the Pan-American Mountain Bike Championship this weekend. The event boasts a strong field, with 15 national teams world- wide expected to compete. With one strong result already in the books, he’s looking to move up a couple of notches this weekend. “I want to finish in the top 10 for sure,” he says. “A win would be nice, but I’m not sure what the competition is going to look like.” He’s coming off a 2009 cam- paign in which he was named Canadian Downhill Male Athlete of the Year by Pedal Magazine, Ontario Downhill Male Athlete of the Year by the Ontario Cycling Association, and Amateur Sports Athlete of the Year by the City of Pickering. He credits much of his success to friends and family, as well as support from Primary- Trek, ATP, Bay Cycle and Home Depot. Upon his return from Guate- mala there is a provincial race in May, but the big race on his calendar is the World Champi- onships in Quebec from Aug. 31 to Sept. 5. The selection process for inclusion in that race will be based on world and national rankings. If Fraser continues on his current path, he fully expects to be on the start line.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 9, 201019 APSportsBrad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com MOUNTAIN BIKING Fraser riding high with Canadian team SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND PICKERING -- Rob Fraser is a downhill mountain bike racer who is representing Canada at the Pan- American mountain bike championship in Guatemala in early April. He just returned from Spain where he finished 16th out of 120 riders in the European Cup Tour 2010. Junior league could have different look for next season BY BRAD KELLY AND SHAWN CAYLEY bkelly@durhamregion.com scayley@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Significant chang- es could alter the landscape of junior hockey in Durham Region next season. While the Pickering Panthers and Whitby Fury vow that it will be business as usual for them, there are indications the same won’t hold true in Bowmanville and Ajax. In Bowmanville, sources indi- cate the Eagles will not be oper- ating next season. The franchise will either fold, or merge with another team in the league, most likely the Cobourg Cougars. It would leave Bowmanville with- out a junior hockey team for the first time since it began as the Jr. C Whiz Kids in October of 1968. The club’s rookie camp, tradi- tionally held the last weekend in April, is not listed on its website. Three calls made over the past week to owner Scott Mackie for comments were not returned as of deadline. Similar rumours that the Attack would be leaving Ajax were also circulating, but owner Rob Stein played down the story. “We’re still part of Ajax,” he says, adding that folding is not an option. “We’re not going any- where as far as I know.” Until a board of governors meeting is held on April 18 in Toronto, Stein says it’s hard to speculate on what the outcome may be for teams. “Nothing’s been set in stone yet so nobody really knows the outcome and how they are going to go about merging or whatev- er,” he says. “It would be a nice thing if the league could merge and get together, but all 36 teams have to agree. “I’m just looking to see what direction our league is going in. We obviously want to do what’s better for the league. As we go along and see what’s happening, we’ll have a better idea.” The Attack have a rookie camp planned for May 16-17. In Pickering, owner John Porco says his franchise isn’t going anywhere. The Panthers are the oldest Tier II junior hockey team in Durham Region, and are a preferred franchise because of the location and facility. A rook- ie camp listed on their website is scheduled for May 10-12. “We are committed to Pickering,” confirms Porco. Meanwhile in Whitby, Fury president Scott McCrory admit- ted his club looked at the pos- sibility of merging, but those talks died due to McCrory’s desire to have the team remain in Whitby. “Our team is not going any- where, I can tell you that much,” McCrory says. “The Whitby Fury will remain in Whitby.” Teams have already been can- vassed to get their input on whether they would like to con- tract or merge. The goal is to combine the Ontario Junior A Hockey League and the Central Canadian Hockey League under one umbrella and reduce the teams from its current number of 36. A final decision is expected to be voted on at the April 18 meet- ing. “I know we can’t wait any lon- ger if we are going to move for- ward. The trigger has got to be pulled,” McCrory says. Curling Club president Lynda Pellow has been advised that Annandale had curling in their open- ing year of 1963, so the offi- cial 50th anniversary will be celebrated in 2013. Appar- ently there was no curling club executive at that time, however the ice was in and used. Annandale again host- ed the Ontario Doublerink finals at the club on Sun- day, April 4. All eight sheets were in use, and volunteer timers were necessary. The men’s Silver Tankard was won by a pair of Renfrew Curling Club teams, and the women’s Tankard was collected by a pair of teams from Glendale Golf and Country Club. An Annandale Junior Mixed team of Josh Hall, Katelyn Wasylkiw, James McPherson and Yvonne Lalonde, with coach Donna Hall, competed in the Ontario Curling Champi- onship in Ilderton March 31 to April 3. They ended with a 2-5 record. Four other Annandale players curl- ing under the Dixie Curling Club banner ended in third place with a 4-3 record. That team was Michael Bryson, Stacey Hogan, Sandy Mar- tin and Kristy Hurst with coach Susannah Moylan. The Bantam mixed cham- pionship was held at the same time, and Annandale curler Ben Bevan curled out of the Whitby Curling Club with Erin Macaulay, Carter Adair and Brook Buncome to a 5-3 third place finish. The last bonspiel for the Annandale season is the annual Men’s Last Chance slated for April 17 and 18, and then the ice is available for skating after the final end of the bonspiel. Pickering resident Rich- ard Hart is vice on the MAJOR SERIES LACROSSE Ajax-Pickering Rock make Bold trade Training camp opens April 17 AJAX -- The Ajax- Pickering Rock contin- ue to tweak the roster in advance of their first sea- son competing in Major Series Lacrosse. The Sr. A team recent- ly traded goaltender Mike Thompson to the Peterborough Lakers in exchange for fellow net- minder Aaron Bold. Thompson was acquired by the Rock in Febru- ary’s dispersal draft of the St. Regis Indians. At the time Rock GM Paul St. John noted that he would attempt to trade Thomp- son, who was recovering from knee surgery, if the 34-year-old veteran wasn’t interested in reporting to the Rock this season. In Bold the Rock gets a goalie that better fits the team going forward in that he is a soon-to-be 25-year- old youngster, one looking to establish himself within the league. Bold, a native of Victoria, B.C., is in his fifth Nation- al Lacrosse League season and his first with Roches- ter, having played in parts of 12 games. The Rock open its train- ing camp on Saturday, April 17 with two sessions. Ontario Men’s Curling Championship team with Glenn Howard, Brent Laing and Craig Savill. The team is scheduled to be in Dawson Creek B.C. for April 13-18 to compete in the final 2009- 10 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, the Grey Power Players’ Champion- ship. The event will feature top curlers in both a men’s and women’s draw. The Ford World Men’s Championship is in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy April 3-11 and will be on TSN for the semifinals Saturday, April 10 and the final on Sunday April 11. But what began as four teams playing in Blackstock in 1995 will this year see hundreds playing at 14 dif- ferent venues across Ontar- io, including the annual Roger Weir Memorial in Whitby and Oshawa April 16-17. “It’s awesome,” says Weir, referring to the million mile- stone, which occurred at a tournament in Alliston. “I didn’t (envision that) back then (in 1995) for sure, but as it’s grown, it’s been one of my big goals to hit. Now we’ll just keep adding to it and go for two million.” The Roger Weir Memorial accounts for more than half the overall total of money raised to date, but that will surely change now that so many other centres have jumped onboard. Weir was hired by the Heart and Stoke foundation a few years back to expand the tournament, which he has done in impressive fash- ion. The first tournament this year took place in Kitchen- er in January, followed by those in Windsor, Alliston, Niagara Falls and Arnprior. There’s a bit of a lull now, but after the Oshawa- Whitby tournament, it’s full speed ahead until mid-June with tournaments in Brant- ford, Woodstock, Hamilton, Kingston, Toronto, Ottawa, Oakville and London. And, while he still wonders about making it a nation- al event down the road, for now he’s pleased with what’s been set up. “We’re going to come back again next year with the FUNDRAISER Hockey for Heart hits million mark same 14 cities and just try to make them better and bet- ter,” he says. The local tournament right now has 28 teams entered, but there’s room for as many as 40, and Weir would love to see a few more sign on. There’s an impressive and unique set of silent auction items ready to be bid on, including a $5,000 interi- or or exterior gift certificate and two $1,500 landscap- ing gift certificates donat- ed by Peter King, the owner and designer of Garden and Home. As always the top fund- raisers in the tournament will play in a Pro Stars game, which this year will feature former Toronto Maple Leaf Steve Thomas, the father of Oshawa Generals star Chris- tian Thomas. Visit www.hockeyforheart. com for more information or to register a team for the tournament. Now we’ll just keep adding to it and go for two million.
