A hazmat crew hired by the City has been hard at work since April 3, cleaning up a diesel spill that continues to spew into a creek that begins east of the Pickering GO station and runs into Krosno Creek before it finally meets French- man’s Bay. Pickering officials immediately looked to the CN trail derailment of March 30, when three locomotives and nine freight cars jumped the tracks just west of the Pickering GO station, as a possible source of the spill. “The coincidence here is just too coincidental,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean. CN spokesman Frank Binder confirmed 40 litres of diesel fuel did leak from one of the loco- motives as a result of the derailment, but said CN’s investigation shows the creek situation has nothing to do with last Tuesday’s situation. “That was contained and recovered,” he said. He noted the creek is about 500 metres east of where the derailment took place, and said the leak was quickly cleaned up. “We sent our environmental team out imme- diately and they did the study to determine it See CN page 13 durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 8, 20102 AP PICKERING SUPERSTORE TOYOTA WE ARE HERE HWY. 2 SETIHWKCORBYENTSEWDOOWRAHMELAS401 *Limited time purchase financing offer provided through Toyota Financial Services on approved credit. 0%/0%/0%/0%/0% finance APR per month for 60/60/60/60/60 months on a on a new 2010 Yaris Hatchback, 2010 Yaris, 2010 Corolla, 2010 Matrix and 2010 Camry. Members of the Teamsters Local 491 voted in favour of a contract and were back on the job on Monday. About 30 people work at the material recovery facility on Garrard Road in Whitby. The facility is owned by Durham Region, but operated by Metro Municipal Recycling Services Inc. The workers are employed by Metro and aren’t Regional employees. Blue box materials are taken to the site for sorting and processing. During the Regional Council works com- mittee on Wednesday, works commissioner Cliff Curtis said, “Things are quickly getting back to normal. As far as the public was con- cerned, there was no strike.” Materials were collected throughout the strike, which began on March 8. Committee chairman and Clarington Councillor Charlie Trim noted, “No waste went to landfill.” Wages and benefits were the main issues in the strike. Teamster business agent Owen Lane said the new contract includes the company pay- ing benefits and some retroactive pay. “It’s better than where we started.” Prior to the strike, benefits were on a co- pay basis. “Yeah, I think most people were,” he said when asked if the workers were happy the strike has ended. “It’s a good basis, a stepping stone.” Workers agreed to the contract on Thurs- day, cleaned up the picket site on Saturday and returned to work on Monday, he said. During the strike, the Region had a con- tingency plan to ensure blue box materials were collected and didn’t end up in a land- fill. The facility, north of Taunton Road, has also re-opened to the public for the sale of blue box and green bin containers. Police held a press conference Tuesday following the third arrest for this offence in Durham Region. The Durham Region Police helicopter, Air One, had to take evasive action while flying over Ajax April 3 when it was hit with a laser pointed from the ground below. An arrest was made shortly afterward. “When the cockpit is hit with a beam from this, it’s like a flash of lightning inside the cockpit,” said Staff Sergeant Alan Mack. “The pilot loses sight, he’s essentially blinded by the flash.” He said this is dangerous for pilots as they need to be checking onboard equipment constantly and the temporary blindness can affect their ability to operate the helicopter safely. The type of laser used in Saturday’s inci- dent is typically used by astronomers and can project a beam to more than 4,000 feet in the air. At close range, it can easily burn the eye’s retina, causing irreparable damage, includ- ing blindness. “I don’t know why people are doing this, there’s no logical reason why you would do that. Perhaps they’re not aware of the inher- ent danger and again that’s what we want to do. We want to impress upon people that there’s an inherent danger to do this,” said Staff Sgt. Mack. “It looks like a very innocent thing and it’s not. It’s extremely dangerous.” At 8 p.m. Saturday, Air One was help- ing officers on the ground track a suspect- ed impaired driver when the laser suddenly flashed in the cockpit. The pilot took imme- diate evasive action, rapidly descending to avoid the laser strike. It was the third attack tactical flight officer Constable Anthony Bow- ers has encountered. “You’re flying along and the cockpit flash- es with a bright green light, you don’t know what’s happening at first,” he said. “With this particular incident Saturday, I thought it was another aircraft flying in the area. I thought it was an anti-collision light from another air- craft because the whole dash lit up.” Of the four laser beam incidents in Dur- ham, police have arrested three suspects, after the helicopter’s onboard infrared tech- nology identified the location of the suspect. Saturday, officers on the ground made an arrest at a home on Parkins Drive in Ajax. Brendon Schoenwald, 19, of Hills Road in Ajax, is facing several charges under the crim- inal code and the Aeronautics Act, including endangering life and dangerous behaviour. A conviction under the Aeronautics Act carries up to five years in prison and/or a maximum $100,000 fine. The new train departs Oshawa at 6:47 a.m. making all stops until Pickering, and then is express to Union Station where it arrives at 7:38 a.m. Other train schedules have been slightly altered to accommodate the new train. There are five other express trains in the morn- ing, departing Oshawa at 7 a.m., 7:15 a.m., 7:21 a.m., 7:53 a.m. and 8:23 a.m. “There is much more demand for an express train on our Lakeshore East corridor (in Dur- ham) because the vast majority of our pas- sengers are boarding in Durham Region,” said Vanessa Thomas, media relations and issues specialist for GO Transit. The regular Lakeshore East trains make five other stops in Toronto and Scarborough before reaching Union Station. Ms. Thomas said it can be challenging to add a new train as GO shares its tracks with CN, CP and VIA. “Anytime we’re adding a new train, we always have to work with our rail partners whom we share our corridors with to make sure our trains don’t conflict with their trains.” During rush hour, it can be tough for pas- sengers in the western part of Durham to find a seat and an extra train should help with that, she said. “Part of our strategic plan is for there to be adequate capacity, so our goal by the year 2020 is to have a seat available for every passenger on 95 per cent of train and bus trips,” said Ms. Thomas. Ridership on the Lakeshore East corridor, one of the busiest lines for GO, continues to grow. “Durham Region is bursting at the seams in terms of just population growth and that also impacts the ridership for our Dur- ham stations,” said Ms. Thomas, adding there are more parking spots at Durham GO sta- tions than most other communities. COMMUTING New rush-hour GO train running in Durham A new Whitby parking garage opened recently and there are plans for similar garages in Ajax and Pickering. Provincial officials estimate the new express train will carry about 400,000 passengers in a year. “Since 2003, our government has invested nearly $3.7 billion to improve and expand GO Transit ser- vice. This additional train trip makes it easier for more commuters to take the train and helps reduce conges- tion on our highways,” said Minister of Transportation Kathleen Wynne in a prepared statement. “The addition of peak period service on the Lake- shore East line means more morning travel options for GO customers travelling from Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering,” added Gary McNeil, GO Transit managing director. Grow up! I don’t smoke either and think it is a ter- rible habit, but our freedoms of speech and expression and rights are in danger of dis- appearing totally and this type of censor- ship cannot be condoned. I suppose this person would want all art and movies that have smoking in them removed as well -- maybe burned. Some people just seem to have nothing more to do than complain. Rob MacArthur Ajax LAW ENFORCEMENT They caught the bad guys who broke into our home, but... To the editor: Recently my husband and I received a call from the Durham Regional Police with great news: they had caught the culprits responsible for our break and enter, and had recovered some of our possessions. While I appreciate the work involved in catching the culprits, we are coming to grips on how our home, broken into Nov. 4, 2009, had an initial officer arrive the same day to inform us that we had to wait for another officer to take prints and photo- graphs. We were told to not touch anything that had been disturbed (including our no- longer-functional door). This officer finally arrived Nov. 7, 2009, and not without mul- tiple inquiries. We were informed this month that they arrested the culprits on Nov. 6, 2009. Figure that one out. They caught them before even show- ing up at our home and we found out five months later, mere days before their trial. These people are repeat offenders who supposedly broke into at least 12 homes in 30 days, and the Crown is looking for a 14- month sentence. But I guess that is another issue altogeth- er. Crystal Fielding Oshawa SCHOOL STABBING This is not the time to create more tension at our high school To the editor: The March 31 online article by Parvaneh Pessian, ‘Dwyer labelled worst Catholic school in Durham by Oshawa mom,’ truly appalled me and other members of the Dwyer community. I am a student at Paul Dwyer and from my experience I can say I could not imag- ine a better school. In my four years at Dwyer, I have yet to witness cliques, never mind the “violent cliques” Ms. Young believes are here. Ms. Young’s daughter was bullied at Dwyer, and although it is not common, bullying does happen everywhere. This does not make Dwyer a bad school. Ms. Young also comments that this recent tragedy is no surprise to her, which is iron- ic because it is a huge shock to the 1,200 students at Dwyer. This is not the time to create more ten- sion at a school in mourning. Ms. Young’s irrelevant comments are not needed. The Dwyer community has come together in this tragedy in a remarkable manner. Students have made a beautiful memo- rial and have started funds for the McDon- ald family. The day after the tragedy students came to school wearing Dwyer jerseys to repre- sent Mike McDonald as a team player. In short, Ms. Young could not be more wrong with her comments. Meghan King Oshawa \ Town Hall meetings a vital opportunity for civic engagement There is still something to be said about average residents getting an opportunity to air their concerns, hold local government to account and seek consensus on topical issues. So it was with a group of Pickering resi- dents last week who turned out to question Mayor Dave Ryan about everything from sewer pipes and potholes to train derail- ments and development. The residents who turned out demonstrated their engagement in civic politics, their commitment to better- ing their neighbourhoods and their belief in community participation. Pickering officials have dealt in the recent past with most of the issues raised at last week’s meeting. By convening a meeting and engaging residents affected by related municipal decisions, local politicians now have a fresh perspective from the street. It should help guide them as they debate future staff recommendations on every- thing from the lawsuit against York Region over the so-called Big Pipe for sewage, to the creation of an urban tree canopy in existing and future residential developments. In an election year, these issues become even more important as political candidates vie for the votes of their constituents. To that end, we call on Pickering residents to take charge of the issues that matter to them and ensure Pickering’s politicians are aware and ready to serve. If the Big Pipe lawsuit seems like a costly and time-con- suming distraction, let the political candi- dates -- whether incumbents or challengers -- know how you feel. If development con- cerns you, take the opportunity to start a conversation with the decision-makers and potential decision-makers in your ward. If you think the tree canopy should be set aside in favour of another pressing issue, say so. Town Hall meetings are vital to the give- and-take between elected officials and vot- ers. Council and committee meetings also provide a clear opportunity for democratic participation. These are fundamental to the betterment of Pickering and the account- ability of our elected officials. At the recent meeting, Mayor Ryan noted specifically in one case that falls under pro- vincial jurisdiction that City officials do their best by advocating on behalf of residents. That’s true, of course, But it’s also true that Pickering residents, and groups of residents because there is strength in numbers, are their own best advocates. Pickering taxpay- ers have from now until October’s munici- pal election to affect change on their streets, in their neighbourhoods and in the larger community. Take the opportunity to help City officials find their path to the future. Engage yourself and stand up for the things you believe in. - Pickering News Advertiser VISIT durhamregion. com/specialreports durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 8, 201012 AP University hosts event for Grade 4 to 12 students DURHAM -- Young scientists can get their game on this weekend during the Durham Regional Science Fair. Habitat for Humanity Durham is pleased to announce the launch of the fi rst annual program to send Durham Youth abroad to participate in building simple decent homes for families in need. This initiative is part of Habitat for Humanity Canada’s Global Village (GV) program on a more locally supported level, but strictly for youth and will happen on a yearly basis. A group of 10 Durham Region students will travel to Romania for two weeks at the beginning of summer break to work on a variety of projects. Habitat Durham Executive Director Mary Bone says; “This is a very exciting opportunity for our affi liate, one that will help foster a new generation of interest in our local community efforts.” Robert Lutczyk, chair of the PR Committee stated; “I am certain this group of teenage philanthropists will have a life altering experience.” Michael Whiston, Vice Chair of HFHD remarked “We are thrilled to have these 10 youth represent us as ambassadors for Habitat Durham and the Region itself.” One of the messages communicated was in the area of raising money and a number of fundraising initiatives have been planned including candy sales at our ReStore, a Yuk Yuk’s night, BBQ, and a walk-a-thon to help offset the $3,500 cost per individual. Habitat for Humanity Durham is also hopeful that a corporate sponsor will come forward to provide funding. Further information is available on the website www.habitatdurham.com. Habitat for Humanity Durham’s Youth Global Village Build did not come from CN property,” he said, adding a second team went out Sunday to confirm it. Pickering Fire Deputy Chief Simon Almond said there was a lot of natural berming from the derailment before CN’s hazmat team quickly cleaned up the leak, and he cannot guess where the creek spill originated. But the night of April 1, Doug Spears, an employee of the nearby Art Thompson Arena, was on his way to work when he smelled an overwhelming odour of gas. “When I first smelled it, the smell was real- ly strong,” he said. “I could even smell it just inside the arena.” He didn’t think much of it Thursday, but when it was still strong Friday, he called the City. “I saw City of Pickering trucks (on the scene) about an hour after I called,” he said. Mr. Spears added he didn’t work March 30 and 31, so he wouldn’t know if the diesel had leaked into the creek before April 1. Although the hazmat crew contracted out by the City, DirectLine Environment Corp., continues to soak up the diesel by using berms running from the beginning of the creek all the way down to Frenchman’s Bay, damage has already been done, said site coordinator Shane Dickson. “Some of it did escape into the lake,” he said. Mr. Dickson says it only takes a small amount of diesel to pollute a body of water. He also claims he saw diesel fuel in six of the catch basins on what he believes was CN property when DirectLine was helping with the derailment clean-up. He noted the time- liness was strangely coincidental. “It seems a very odd coincidence that a train derailed just last week and now we’re here working on this,” he said, adding he didn’t want to point fingers. Mr. Binder denied the claim, and said CN’s environmental team, along with an inde- pendent environmental firm, checked all six catch basins a number of times and found no diesel originally. However, on Wednesday morning, diesel fuel was found in one catch basin on the boundary of CN and GO Tran- sit property by CN’s environmental team. He still believes the leak did not result from the derailment. “It was 40 litres of fuel that was contained and absorbed,” he said. GO Transit spokeswoman Vanessa Thom- as said the source of the fuel is being investi- gated. “We are working with CN to determine the source of the diesel,” she said. She added there were no traces of the fuel prior to the derailment. As no one’s taking responsibility, Pickering is paying for the cleanup, something the City only budgets $25,000 per year, which this cleanup could easily reach, said Coun. McLean. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 8, 201013 P Thursday, April 8, 2010 Ajax & Pickering Locations Flyers in Today’s Paper If you did not receive your News Advertiser/fl yers OR you are interested in a paper route call Circulation at 905-683-5117. HOCKEY Allen receives spot on all-star team STORRS, CONN. -- Senior Cristin Allen, a defenceman on the University of Connecticut women’s hockey team, has been named to the 2010 New England Writers’ All-Star Team. This is the second consecutive sea- son the Pickering resident has been one of the four defencemen honored and it is the sixth straight season at least one member of the Huskies has been named. Allen is the first UConn player to receive the honor twice in her career. The award is the second major award for Allen this season, who was named the Hockey East’s inaugural Best Defenceman prior to Connecticut’s con- ference championship game appear- ance. She earned Hockey East first team honors as well, after pulling in sec- ond team honors following the 2008-09 season. A two-time Patty Kazmeier nomi- nee, Allen led the team in assists for the second consecutive season, totaling 21 as a senior. She will graduate in the Connecticut record books as second on the all-time assist list with 54 and fifth in overall scoring, totaling 64 points in 139 games played. Allen concluded the year 12th in points per game among defencemen, averaging 0.65 points. She was fourth on the Huskies in overall scoring with 24 points in her final season. An assis- tant captain for the 2009-10 squad that wrapped up the year with a 21-9-7 record, Allen was part of one of the most successful classes in UConn program history. She helped the Huskies to a 79- 32-19 record throughout her four years. SOCCER Savarino making an impact Pickering midfielder in his third season at St. Bonaventure University BY BRENT BURRY bburry@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Former St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School soccer star Fabrizio Savarino is enjoying life as a St. Bonaventure Bonnie. The midfielder, now completing his third year at the New York state university, is expe- riencing both personal and team success on the field. The Bonnies posted their best record and clinched their first berth in the Atlantic 10 tournament for the first time in 10 years this past season, and Savarino finished second on the team in points (14) and goals (6), includ- ing three game-winners. “Coming in you don’t really know what to expect, but after having a couple of years experience under your belt you kind of know what to expect,” says Savarino of his time at St. Bonaventure. Entering his final year, Savarino wants his team to continue the success of this past sea- son and earn an NCAA championship tour- nament berth, but admits he has thought about his future beyond St. Bonaventure, which could include going overseas to play soccer. “It all depends on everything, how my sea- son goes this year, job opportunities, it all depends. It’s definitely crossed my mind, but I’m going to play it by ear,” he says. But one thing he knows for sure is that he wants to continue playing. “I will definitely try to keep playing as long as I can.” No one grows up playing sports and expe- riencing the success that Savarino has with- out some help along the way, and his dad Joe was that person. “Without a doubt my dad. Ever since I was a kid, he’s always been harping on me and just trying to get the best out of me. He definitely helped out a lot,” says Savarino, who was at home for the Easter break. Over 500 of the top trampolinists and tum- blers in the province will be competing at the event which is being hosted by Anti-Gravity Trampoline. Cockburn and Burnett both won silver medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “The events are going to be trampoline, double-mini trampoline, tumbling and syn- chronized trampoline,” said Stacey Turpin, head coach and owner of Anti-Gravity Tram- poline. This is the first time the annual event is being hosted by Anti-Gravity Trampoline, which has hosted qualifying events before. “Last year, we put about 2,000 spectators through so we expect it will probably be in that neighbourhood again,” said Turpin. Pickering Minor Peewee AA wins Lakeshore title PICKERING -- There was something missing when Brenda Holden watched her son play for the Pickering Panthers minor peewee AA team ... noise. So she set out to fix the problem. She ventured out to the local party supply stores and showed up to a game with what is now being called the Bag O’ Fun. Inside the bag was an assortment of noise mak- ers, plastic hand clappers, cowbells and any type of blow horn you could think of. She even bought a mega- phone that had a siren on it. The bag turned out to be inspirational throughout the playoffs. In the semifinals against the Ajax Knights, there was as much commitment in the stands as there was on the ice with both groups of parents com- peting in a battle of noise. The Pickering parents wouldn’t let their players down and, to the tune of clanging bells and blow- ing horns, the team went on to take the series three games to one. Pickering advanced to the Lakeshore League finals against the Kingston Canadians, who had beat- en a much stronger team, the Peterborough Nation- als, in their semifinal. The Panthers came into the series with the deter- mination and focus. In the end, the Panthers were just too strong and swept Kingston in three games with scores of 5-3, and two straight 4-0 victories to clinch the championship. Team members are: Joseph Corrao, Josh- ua Landrigan, Natalie Wozney, Evan Arsenault, William Bird, Andrew Cec- chetto, Tavish Davidson, Cameron Holden, Sean Lovisek, Jarrett Macklin, Quinn McFadden, Brad- ley Rose, Jack Schnalzer, Tristan Schynevaars, Luke Svent-Ivany, Simon Taskas and Luke Rampino. The head coach is Todd Davidson, assistant coach- es Dave Wozney, Mike Rampino, Paul Schyve- naars and Paul Bird (goalie coach), team trainer Vince Corrao and team manager Dina Macklin. The 13-15-year-old divi- sion team, coached by Hol- ley Lundmark and Julia Maclean, took first place and the team coached by Jenilee Keslering took second, beat- ing Gloucester and Kawar- tha-Trent respectively.
