The church was filled with mourners, most of them young friends and fellow Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School students. “I’m really shocked but it’s good to see everyone come together. It shows how many friends he had,” said Danielle Castle, 16. She said she would miss his smile most of all. A photo display in the church showed pictures of Michael as a chubby, happy-looking baby up to a six-foot-two, 280-pound football player. In his eulogy, Michael was described as a kind, gentle teen. He wanted to train to be an auto mechanic and open his own auto body shop. His mother, Rhonda Corby, did not speak at the funeral but Reverend Christopher White read her “words of remembrance”. She said she was proud of her son for touching so many people in his short life and will miss him. The 16-year-old Dwyer student was fatally stabbed at a bus stop near the Oshawa school on March 30 after a dispute with another student. He was less than a month shy of his 17th birthday. Rev. White urged everyone at the memorial to make a change to make the community safer after the violent death. “It is not enough to cry today. There must be more. Tears dry up, flow- ers fade and people go back to their lives. But not here, not now, not in this case, for we are each of us responsible for the world in which we live. We are each of us responsible for the community that we create or allow others to create for us,” said Rev. White. “Today is about choice. Do we choose to say never again and work for change in our schools and our town? Do we create a living memorial for Michael, not of flowers but out of what we do in response to this terrible loss?” Students who played with Michael on the football team wore their Saints’ navy blue and gold jerseys to the funeral. The players led the procession out of the church after the funeral. Coach Mike Wilson led the players in a team cheer after the hearse, carrying Michael to the cemetery, pulled away from the church. “Who they think? Who they think? Who they think gonna beat the Saints? Nobody,” chanted the group of young men. Students lingered outside the church long after the service, hug- ging and crying. “He was just one of those guys who seemed like a family member. He was honestly the nicest guy. He would have done anything for anybody,” said teammate Duncan McDonald. “He was always smiling. I picture him, big hair up in the air and a big smile on his face.” The accused, Jacques ‘Junior’ Amakon, 18, is in custody. The Oshawa man is charged with second-degree murder and possession of a dangerous weapon. JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND Ajax woman killed in crash CLARINGTON -- OPP were investigating a two-vehicle collision at Hwy. 35 and Boundary Road in the City of Kawartha Lakes on April 5. Officials with the City of Kawartha Lakes fire department said one of the vehicles involved in the head-on crash caught fire. The road remained closed throughout the afternoon as police investigat- ed. Min-Hua Shao, 46, of Ajax, a passenger in a van, was killed in the crash. AJAX -- Two men have been arrested after a teen was repeatedly stabbed in the head last week in a violent street-level attack. Puviraj Chandransagaran, 19, of Grenoble Drive, Toronto, and Nirosan Thillainathan, 20, of Harty Crescent in Ajax, were arrested in Hamilton on Friday by Durham officers with the assistance of Hamilton police. They are both charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. Mr. Chandransagaran is also charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with his bail conditions. The charges come after an incident on March 22 where police say the victim was threatened with a hammer, repeatedly stabbed in the head and kicked in the face during the attack, which occurred near J. Clarke Richardson school on Harwood Avenue North, Durham police said. The victim was treated at a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries and released. Police said last week the attack was related to an ongoing dispute over a female acquain- tance. The two suspects were brought back to Dur- ham Region for a court appearance. In the course of the arrest, police seized a 2003 Infinity G35 which they believe was used in the attack. The investigation is ongoing and police are still trying to identify the other males who were in the car during the attack. The additional tax will cost the average homeowner an extra $10 on their bill. The property tax increase, before the $420,000 set aside for legal costs, would have been 2.9 per cent to cover operational costs, the lowest Pickering residents have seen since 2001, Mayor Dave Ryan noted. “Once again Pickering is the lowest taxed municipality of the five lakeshore municipalities across Dur- ham Region,” he said. The 3.9-per cent increase represents an extra $39.42 on the local portion of the bill for an average Pickering home valued at $340,750. The local portion represents 27 per cent of property taxes, with the rest going to the Region of Durham and to the Province for education. Pickering accuses York of failing to prop- erly consult residents on its proposed odour control facility to accommodate the expan- sion of the pipe that takes York’s raw sewage to Pickering for treatment. Although York eventually changed plans to put the facility just over York-Durham Towline Road, it did so without consulting residents or council. Council unanimously passed the $21.2-mil- lion capital budget and the current budget of $72 million, Monday night, including the tax increase. Residents at the meeting were grateful for council’s decision. Many fear the possible odours and health risks from the facility. Pickering resident John Murray told council he’s found an average of 282.8 megalitres of York’s sewage per day were treated in 2008 at Pickering’s Duffin Creek Water Pollution Con- trol Plant, and added that will only increase. He also fears for the possible ramifications of the meeting of three large pipes close to his home at Valley Farm Road and Finch Avenue, which will come along with the expansion. “I don’t like paying taxes but in this case it’s important to pay more because it’s such a big matter,” he said. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson was skeptical about the legal battle, saying Pickering’s chance to win is quite slim, and costs will be higher than anticipated, espe- cially since the City has already paid $230,000 in legal fees. Pickering resident Peter Rodrigues dis- agreed. “When Pickering is successful with our legal actions, we will recoup our legal costs, and this is highly likely because three independent, expert environmental lawyers have clearly said this is the expected outcome based on the numerous facts and the law,” he told council. Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell said if Pickering doesn’t fight the battle now, it could face even more costs down the road, such as possible repairs if the pipe breaks down and York drags its feet. Meanwhile York Region’s commissioner of environmental services, Erin Mahoney, said the increase is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars. “Our experts are saying the costs could be well over $1 million on both sides,” she said, adding York is prepared to challenge the City to recoup legal costs since it expects to win. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 7, 20104 P 1 Rossland Road, Ajax • Tel 905-428-9418 AVAILABLE FROM NARAINE’S BAKERY GAVIN and SHEVINGAVIN and SHEVIN 1801 Valley Farm Rd.,Pickering 905-420-3369www.chartwellreit.ca THE RETIREMENT OPTION OF CHOICE Now she has so much to look forward to Now that Virginia lives in a Chartwell residence, she is surrounded by people with similar interests and experiences. I just read the article regarding spend- ing $12.8 million on cycling and pedestrian improvements. This is insanity. That amounts to $130 per person. So an average family of four would be paying $520 for this. Why am I subsidizing a few hundred avid cyclists? I guarantee there will be cost overruns. As far I know, the vast majority of people in Ajax do not work in Ajax so they proba- bly commute via car or transit. In addition, few people will be using these trails and sidewalks in the winter or in bad weather. I humbly suggest some roads need work before we put in any more bike paths or pedestrian sidewalks. How about widening Westney Road north of Delany/Magill? Or Rossland? This is just another case of political cor- rectness run amok. John Pastor Ajax PUBLIC SERVICE McGuinty’s plan means six years without a wage increase To the editor: Re: Ontario to freeze wages of public-ser- vice workers March 26. I’m angry that Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is cutting the deficit by freezing public sector wages. Nurses and other staff at Ontario hospitals are already bearing the brunt of the defi- cit by receiving layoff notices, thus putting patients at risk. According to the article, some contracts are coming up in 2011 and 2012 and will affect workers then. In the facility I work at, the contract already expired so the last time we had a pay raise was two years ago. Premier McGuinty says the raise freeze could reach beyond 2014. Are my colleagues and I expected to have a wage freeze of another four or more years totalling six or more years while costs go up? Instead of cutting wages, he should have delayed full-day kindergarten and never even started the LHIN’s (Local Health Inte- grated Networks) which is an extra govern- ment department which sucks money from hospitals and other public services. On the bright side, it’s MPPs and manag- ers who will be affected by wage freezes too, not just frontline staff; and that Tim Hudak and the Conservatives aren’t in power as they would be cutting even further. Avery Thurman Oshawa HERITAGE Historical importance of Camp X artifacts should be recognized To the editor: I would like to add my voice to the con- cern regarding Camp X. This organization was one of the most important intelligence operations during the Second World War. All there is to recognize it is a “monu- ment” – a wall with a plaque and flags – on the original site. Grade 5 student Bryce McRae under- stands the importance of retaining all we can of the artifacts in a suitable location, preferably a small museum on the site. If he can have such a good recognition of the importance of history, surely we who can recall those years would want one or more of our municipal, regional, provincial or even federal governments to allocate a few dollars to make this happen. It has been well documented by others that Camp X was of major importance to the Allies’ intelligence services. Let us not forget all those who contributed to its suc- cess. David Kentish Ajax The Durham Region Media Group and durhamregion.com have been busy early on in this election year with a special series called Make a Difference. In a series of feature stories, we explore the people and issues that make municipal governments what they are. We have talk- ed to both veteran and rookie politicians, we examined the issues that municipal governments face and most recently, we talked to an expert on municipal politics who lamented the poor voter turnout rates that plague municipal elections. That’s where you, the voters of Durham Region, can take a stand and collectively Make a Difference. There are a host of issues facing voters in municipalities across the region. The incinerator continues to raise hackles in Clarington; political leadership leads the voter agenda in Oshawa; urban sprawl confronts voters and politicians in Ajax and Pickering, and representation con- cerns those in the northern municipali- ties. Add to that the issue of electing the Dur- ham Region chairman and you’ve got a 2010 election in your municipality that requires your informed and personal par- ticipation. And in the simplest terms, each and every voter, in every corner of Durham, has the opportunity this year to make a differ- ence. To that end, we encourage every eligible man and woman to learn about the issues in their neighbourhoods and their towns and cities. We ask that you make an effort to educate yourself, make an effort to make contact with the people who want to represent you and exercise your democratic franchise in October on voting day. You owe it to yourself to learn why you pay what you do in property taxes, to become aware of spending commit- ments and pending projects and to cast an informed vote. And to the men and women who seek the privilege of representing their constitu- ents, we call on you to adopt old-fashioned campaigning techniques by getting out and visiting those voters. Let them know who you are, what you stand for and what your commitment to voters will be. Shake their hands, look them in the eye and make your solemn promises. There is a host of important issues facing each of the municipalities that make up Durham Region, perhaps moreso this time than in elections past. Get informed. Get to know the candidates. Get out and vote. By doing so, you can claim your place in history for having contributed to our dem- ocratic tradition. It’s a responsibility, to be certain, but it’s an important one. Go ahead. BY KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- A former provincial cabinet minister wants the chairman in Durham Region and across Ontario to be elected. David Caplan introduced a private member’s bill in the Ontario legislature recently that would have the position filled by a general election. “This is an idea whose time has come and now is the right time,” Mr. Caplan said in an interview. In regions such as Durham, York and Peel, the chair- man is appointed by Regional councillors at their first meeting following a municipal election. In Halton and Waterloo regions, the chairman is directly elected. “All upper-tier governments ought to have the same kind of rules and democratic practices in place,” Mr. Caplan stated. “I think the rules should be consistent across the province.” Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouellette and Progressive Con- servative leader Tim Hudak have put forward private member’s bills to have the chair elected in Durham and Niagara, respectively. Mr. Caplan said he came to the idea of an elected chairman will serving as the minister of public infra- structure renewal and he worked on the Places to Grow Act, the legislation aimed a curbing urban sprawl. His thinking then was to have “your vision and poli- cies in place” and then governance would follow. With municipal elections in the fall, “it’s an appropri- ate time to come forward with the appropriate chang- es. It would be ideal to do it now. If that’s not workable, certainly by 2014,” Mr. Caplan stated. “I introduced the legislation and I gotta tell ya, I had a number, not only from the Liberal caucus, but opposition caucus members who came up to me and said ‘it’s long overdue and it should be in place,’” Mr. Caplan said. He admits the chances of his bill succeeding aren’t good. “I’m not naive or anything like that. For private member’s bills, it’s a long process and very few of these are actively passed into law.” Durham Chairman Roger Anderson dismissed the idea, saying, “I can only assume the government would do what it did with other private member’s bills on local government and ignore it.” Chairman since 1997, Mr. Anderson has steadfastly opposed the idea of having the position filled through a direct election. “When the Province looks at local government, they don’t look at us as kids. We’re a partner,” Mr. Anderson said. “If we want to change it, we will. There’s a process to do it. “It’s not up to David Caplan to decide the structure of local government,” he added. “Municipal governments will decide how they want to change,” he added. “He probably saw an article in the (Toronto) Star and thought it was a good thing.” POLITICS Bill would mean an elected Durham chairman He probably saw an article in the (Toronto) Star and thought it was a good thing. She said the day was formed because students want- ed to take part. “Students wanted to be involved in service because they felt they had been given a lot in their lives and wanted to give back to the community,” she said. The most impressive part: the hours the students racked up on the day of service did not go toward their required 40 hours of community service they’re required to fulfill. “I have my 40 hours, but I learned a lot from it and I wanted to try something else,” said Grade 10 Denis O’Connor student Erin Morrison, adding she did her community service for school at FOOTPRINTS in Pickering, an autism support and respite group. All Dishes Served with Choice of Rice or Naan Licensed Under LLBODurham’sBest IndianRestaurant2009Gold Eating well at home can be done by planning meals in ad- vance, making a list before you shop, setting aside time to cook, and having healthy snacks on hand. Making healthy choices in restaurants is not always as easy, but by following some of the same principles it can be done. Samara Foisy, Heart and Stroke Foundation registered dietitian, offers the following tips to help you make healthy choices when dining out: Plan in advance. Choose restaurants that you know offer healthy choices. Ask restaurants for nutrition information when you arrive or visit their website before you go and use the infor- mation to compare different choices. Look at the bigger nutrient picture. To make a healthy overall choice look for dishes that are lower in fat, sodium and sugar, and also include lots of vegetables and fruit and whole grains. Undress your meal. Sauces and gravies can be high in both sodium and fat. Either ask to skip them altogether or request them on the side so you can control how much you put on. Make substitutions. Order your meat, poultry or fi sh baked, broiled, poached or grilled with no salt or other seasonings that contain salt. Ask for lemon slices, fresh pepper or extra herbs and spices to add fl avour. You can also ask for your vegetables steamed with no added salt. Identify hidden sources. Be familiar with words that indicate a high sodium content such as: marinated, pickled, smoked, breaded, brined, au jus, teriyaki or in broth. The extras count. Beware of condiments such as ketchup, relish, soy sauce, and dressing which can be high in sodium and fat. Ask for them on the side. Pass on the salt shaker. Don’t add any salt at the table. And ask your server if your meal can be provided with no extra salt added in the kitchen. Divide and conquer. Portion sizes in restaurants are often large, so share or take half of your meal home. Watch what you drink. Use milk instead of cream in your coffee. Drink water, lower-fat milk or 100% fruit juice. Check for Health Check. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Health Check program is now available in restaurants. More information about healthy eating in restaurants is available at healthcheck.org. www.newscanada.com Plan healthy and delicious dining out experiences By Stephanie Lawrence Pickering native Cory Joseph one of best high school hoopsters in U.S. BY SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com COLUMBUS, OH -- When the Pickering Trojans last won an OFSAA boys’ basketball cham- pionship in 2008, they did so with contributions from broth- ers Cory and Devoe Joseph. Since then Devoe’s journey, one that saw him enter the start- ing lineup as a sophomore this season at the University of Min- nesota, has been well docu- mented. Cory’s, not so much. At least in these parts. But over the last two years, the younger Joseph has become one of the best high school players in the United States as a member of the Findlay Prep team in Hen- derson, Nevada. He’s also one of the most sought-after NCAA recruits for the 2010-11 season, with as many as five schools still vying for his services. “When I came out to Nevada, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” the six-foot-three guard said in a recent phone interview. “I wanted to work hard and become the best play- er and person I could be. It hap- pened to work out great.” So much so that he earned an invite to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game last week in Columbus, Ohio. The game featured the best high school players from across the United States, including Joseph and his Findlay Prep teammate Tristan Thompson, of Brampton. Just how prestigious is playing in that game? An overwhelming majority of the game’s alumni have reached the NBA, a group that includes the likes of Magic Johnson (1977), Michael Jordan (1981), Isiah Thomas (1979), Lebron James (2003) and Kobe Bryant (1996), among others. Considering his statistics lead- ing into this Saturday’s national championship game for Findlay Prep, Joseph was very deserving of the nod. The Pickering native leads the team in scoring, averaging a shade under 19 points a game, is first in assists (4.9), steals (2.5) and second in rebounds (6.7), trailing only Thompson in that category. “I try to do a little bit of every- thing,” Joseph said in describing his game. Two years removed from his time at Pickering High, Joseph admits it was hard to leave home. And it still is. “I miss home, my family, my friends. That’s just natural,” he noted. But the welcoming surround- ings he finds himself in at Find- lay Prep, not to mention the suc- cess the team has had -- win- ning one national title and on the verge of another -- has made things easier. “It’s even been more than I thought it was going to be,” he said of his experience finishing out high school ball down south. “I couldn’t ask for anything more. The first year we didn’t lose one game and we won the national championship. This year is going great. Hopefully we can win another national cham- pionship. I really couldn’t ask for anything more.” Joseph will lead Findlay into the ESPN Rise NHSI finals this Saturday, April 10. While departing home for Nevada was a tough decision, Joseph has arguably an even tougher one on his hands now in trying to decide what NCAA Division I school to attend in the fall. “It’s a big decision and it’s been pretty stressful. There are five great schools that I have on my list and it’s hard to choose,” he said. Joseph didn’t confirm the five interested, but those which have been rumoured include Texas, Connecticut, Kentucky, UNLV and Devoe’s Minnesota Golden Gophers. “Whenever I am 100 per cent ... I am going to have to sit down and talk with my family and my coaches and we’re going to have to make a decision,” he said.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 7, 201016 AP Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com durhamregion.com HENNY RAY ABRAMS/HO MCDONALDS COLUMBUS -- Cory Joseph (5) of Pickering, drives to the hoop on Kendall Marshall during the second half of the McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Game last week in Columbus, Ohio. Ajax started the playoffs with a three-game sweep of the Markham Waxers. Ajax then knocked off Rich- mond Hill in the second round to face Brampton in the finals. Brampton was undefeated all year and gave Ajax their only loss, so everyone knew it would be a great series. Ajax won the first two games by a one-goal differ- ence. The third game was another nail-biter as Ajax lost 4-3. After playing three full periods and one sud- den death overtime period, the fourth game ended in a 3-3 draw. The final game was played in Brampton, and was won due to a solid effort from all the skaters and a stellar goaltending performance. The score was 3-2 in favour of Ajax. This is the first time an Ajax team has won the mite championship. Team members are Josh Simpson, Luke Goodchild, Alex Douglas, Andrew Douglas, Liam Arnsby, Jacob Longbottom, Quin- ton Saunders, Blake Pet- sinis, Cody Saunders, Colin Muldoon, Beckham Schwartz, Owen Jennings, James Key, Thomas Gib- son, Curtis McNabb and Jason Clements. The coaching staff includes Todd McNabb, Jason Key, Paul Bigio- ni, Dieter Schwartz, Jes- sica Jennings and Heather Saunders. Andrew, who found himself open on the base- line, released the shot just before the buzzer to fin- ish an exciting and well- played contest. The win kept Michael’s drive for second spot and a bye in the playoffs alive with only one game left in the regu- lar season. Mike Stoddart had a game high 19 points, while Claude Whitfield added 11 and Andrew fin- ished with 8 for the win- ners. Gregg McGuire led the Shelf with 13 while Bob Hunt and Bob Murray contributed 8 each. Phillips Hager and North also won 44-38 over Dick- son Printing to keep a share of second place. Garnett Cunning led the squad with a dozen while teammates Ian Harvey and Orin Taylor chipped in 10 each. Tim Lane had 15 and big man Phil Guth- rie scored 10 for Dicksons. Regular season champs North Alliance Press hung on for a 48-46 victory over ESN Packaging. Cap- tain John Beyaz led the way with a game-high 20 points. Don McEachern had a dozen while Derek Kent and Pat Roach added 8 each. Rodney Eskins and captain Doug Coles each had 10 in a losing cause. Only one game remains before playoffs begin. Games are played every Wednesday at Ajax High School.
