The Province wants several changes made to Dur- ham’s Official Plan so that it conforms to the provin- cial Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan. In June, Regional council approved changes to Durham’s plan, including setting aside a chunk of land near Green- wood in Pickering for urban-style development. In a letter to the Region, Larry Clay, a regional direc- tor in the ministry’s municipal services office, said the “northeast Pickering expansion area as it is prema- ture at this time.” About 70 per cent of the new housing develop- ment would be single detached or semis. That kind of development “will also undermine the Region’s own efforts to make better use of existing land and infra- structure and to build transit-supportive develop- ment.” Ajax Mayor Steve Parish opposed many of the changes Dur- ham wanted to make. He calls the provincial response “very good news.” When the Region was dealing with the plan, he tried to make amendments, he stated. “All the things the Province did, I brought those amendments. (Ajax) Town staff and ministry staff told them. They knew it wasn’t in conformity.” The Region has the option of continuing to fight for its plan or it can accept the provincial position, Mayor Parish noted. “The right thing to do is accept they were wrong and make the appropriate changes and get on with it,” he added. “Accept real- ity, make the changes and move on.” Without agreeing to the provincial position, Ontario Munici- pal Board hearings would ensue. “Citizens don’t gain anything from that, except large legal bills. You can’t fight the Province on this.” Oshawa Mayor John Gray, the chairman of Regional council’s planning committee, said the Region will continue to push its position with ministry staff. “We’ll present our case to the Prov- ince. Do I anticipate a huge fight? No, we’re creatures of the Province,” Mayor Gray said. “We hope to still have the oppor- tunity to present our case. We’re willing to meet and go over it from our point.” He expected some “to-ing and fro-ing.” REGION Province slams Durham’s planning moves durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 26, 20104 AP PICKERING TOWN CENTRE • UPPER LEVEL • SEARS WING We Have Your Size COMFORT AND STYLE Financing Available *ASK ABOUT OUR BEST VALUE, FOR THE BEST PRICE, GUARANTEE CALL NOW FOR MORE DETAILS Find us online: advantageairtech.com Pickering/Ajax 1895 Clements Rd. During the event, set for March 27, the Fire Marshal’s office is “strongly recom- mending” use of flashlights, battery- operated lanterns, or flameless candles for light, as opposed to candles, said a media release from the organization. “While I do encourage everyone to get involved in this worthy initiative, I hope everyone will take every precaution to prevent fires while doing so,” Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke said. “If people do choose to light candles for Earth Hour, they should test all of the smoke alarms in their homes ahead of time to ensure they are working.” The Fire Marshal’s office provides a number of precautions on use of can- dles. Sturdy candle-holders that won’t tip or burn should be used. According to the Fire Marshal’s office, those with glass shades or chimneys are best. Lit candles should be kept a safe distance from anything that can burn. Candles, matches and lighters should be kept out of reach of children. If using candles, always stay in the room where they are being used. They should not be used in bedrooms Page 6 - Today’s editorial. Relax. The Grove School serves students who, for various reasons, can’t attend a traditional school. A teacher from the Grove School holds daily classes for 10 youths who are former or current residents at the shelter. Mr. Phillips came to the shelter last fall. It was his mother Janet who found the shelter, which serves homeless and at-risk youth aged 16 to 24 and is the only youth shelter in Durham. “Things weren’t working out at home, I was causing too much stress and I guess it was time for me to leave,” he said. He has only good things to say about his experience at the Durham Youth House. “The staff here showed me it’s not a bad thing for us youth to be living here, it’s kind of like a new start.” He was just one English credit shy of obtaining his diploma and continued to attend classes at the shelter even after he left. It all paid off on Monday when he proudly accepted his diploma and he thanked the staff at the Durham Youth House. “They showed me this stuff was easy, I don’t know why I couldn’t have done this in high school,” said Mr. Phillips. Residents at the shelter, staff members and Mr. Phillips’s family, including his mother, dad Gord and brother Jaden Phil- lips, all looked on. Ms. Phillips had a friend purchase the class ring in the United States in antici- pation of her son’s 2007 graduation from Notre Dame in Ajax. That graduation never happened, but she hung on to it for the day she could finally give it to her son. “He just made me really proud today,” said Ms. Phillips. Durham Youth House opened its doors in April 2008 and has 13 beds. Durham Youth Housing and Support Services also provides drop-in services for information and support, meals, clothing and referrals to other organizations for counselling and training. Mary Dunlop, executive director for Dur- ham Youth Housing and Support Services, said the school was established because staff was having a hard time getting the youth into schools. In some cases, it can be a transporta- tion issue because youth come from across Durham and in other cases it might be tough for them to catch up in the middle of a semester. In cases where the youth can attend a traditional high school, they’re encouraged to do so and staff does its best to accommodate them. The fact that classes are in the same building as the shelter helps motivate the youth to attend. Mr. Phillip’s teacher, Craig Knight, encouraged him to share his successes so others will follow the same path. “That’s where the strength is, when he shares his story with other people, there’s a ripple effect,” he said. Now that he has his diploma, Mr. Phil- lips hopes to work in the restaurant indus- try and is applying to culinary school at George Brown college. The staff here showed me it’s not a bad thing for us youth to be living here, it’s kind of like a new start. The offi- cer was off duty and driving his own vehicle when he was stopped by a Durham officer in a cruiser. I went racing outside in my slippers and, heartbeats later, heard it: the tinkling notes of our tiniest woodland migrant, just back from a winter in the southern states and en route to cottage country. For me, hearing my first winter wren is the defining moment of spring. Four inch- es from bill to the tip of its cocked-up tail, this dark brown gleaner of wet, shady for- est floors has an impossibly long, bub- bling song for its miniscule size. “Precious” is the best word to describe it. They’re all precious, the millions of songbirds on their way home to Canada to nest right now. And they’re in serious trouble. A report released March 11 on the status of birds in the United States reveals that fully one-third of them are endangered, threatened or in significant decline. One- third of North America’s birds! Those that migrate on north across the border, toward our boreal forests and bar- renlands, face more dangers as they cross the Great Lakes, such as the glass walls of Toronto highrises. More than a million of our native song- birds crash into them each year, confused by the lights at night, the reflections by day. Despite years of public education efforts by FLAP, the Fatal Light Awareness Pro- gram, too many migrants still fly headfirst into glass they can’t see and perish. Every morning during spring migration, FLAP volunteers patrol the worst sites to rescue casualties still twitching and flut- tering on the sidewalks below, and to gather the small feathered bodies that aren’t moving. Last year, 51 dead hum- mingbirds were collected at one building over six days; only two ruby-throats were rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Songbirds that manage to avoid the phallanx of highrises and settle down into our urban forest to rest and feed face the twin dangers of picture windows and cats. So heads up, homeowners of Durham. Migration is on, and there’s lots we can do to make the journey safer for our precious songbirds. Stick translucent-to-humans CollidEs- cape decals outside your picture windows or a handful of Post-it notes so birds know the glass is there. Or tack up black garden netting, stretched taut an inch or more from the pane. It’s nearly invisible from inside. Window glass confuses nesting birds, which see their reflection and think a rival is invading their territory. If a cardinal or a robin starts “attacking” your window, tape up something to block the reflection for a week or two, and slip a grocery bag over your rearview mirrors. If you work in an office tower, talk to colleagues about turning off lights at night and check www.flap.org to learn how you can rescue injured birds. And keep your cat indoors. Nature queries: 905-725-2116 or mcarney@interlinks.net. Durham outdoors writer Margaret Carney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far-flung corners of the planet. Help our feathered friends as they prepare to nest Margaret Carney Do your part to conserve and observe Earth Hour There’s something special about an hour of darkness helping us to see the light on climate change. So it is with the annual Earth Hour obser- vations that are bringing together indi- viduals and communities across Durham Region this Saturday to collectively con- serve energy. Earth Hour began in Australia in 2007 and has crept around the globe, recruiting new countries and their citizens along the way. It serves as an important reminder of the things we can and should be doing not once a year but every day to reduce ener- gy consumption and our collective carbon footprint. It’s important that we set aside the politi- cal noise on climate change that has over- taken sober discussion, that we ignore shortsighted governments clamouring to talk about carbon credits or that work aggressively to debunk what seems obvi- ous to everyone instead of developing long-term, sustainable conservation poli- cies. Each individual effort, however small, can add up to a big difference. Durham Region businesses, too, recognize their role and are planning to observe Earth Hour. It’s easy, of course, to turn the lights off at your home or business for an hour. But Earth Hour is really about the rest of the day when our cars and appliances run, when our lights are on and our business- es are operating. If we all take personal responsibility for something as simple as shutting off an unnecessary light, or walk- ing to the corner store instead of jumping into the car, we will have made an impact. Climate change is a highly charged polit- ical issue, but it’s one of the few that every- day citizens can also embrace as a person- al issue. If we all make the commitment to be cognizant of our energy use and that of the people around us, every hour will be Earth Hour. Take a hike. Turn off a light. Ride a bike. Plant a tree in your backyard. Advocate for reduced retail packaging. Use your blue box and green bin and, perhaps most importantly, set an example for your kids and others. We all support action on climate change. But showing support means taking action and making a concerted and sustained effort in reducing our environmental impact. Earth Hour will be upon us this Saturday. What are you going to be doing to partici- pate? What will you be doing beyond Earth Hour to ensure that we continue to take action on climate change? Turn the lights off. That’s a start. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 26, 20107 AP WHERE IN THE EMPIRE DO YOU WANT TO LIVE? The Governor General’s Award-winning play opens tonight at Oshawa Little The- atre with more performances on March 27, 31, April 1, 2 and 3. “Sisters Beatrice (Lanie Ander- son, of Ajax) and Sissy (Amy Park, of Whitby), and their friend, Mary (Oshawa’s Alley Hamilton), eagerly await the return of their hometown boy as the end of the First World War is announced,” states a DSP press release. “But what did the young men bring home from the front? This award-winning epic, set in Unity, Saskatchewan at the end of the First World War, explores what happens when the town faces a new enemy on the home front, more deadly and horrify- ing than any returning army -- one of the worst influenza epi- demics of the modern era.” The Unity cast also features Darren Brunke, Jeff Kellar, Eric Terry and Laurie Scattergood of Oshawa, Whitby’s Rachel Downey and Sheri Pereira, Courtice’s Rick Bunting and Gary King, of Pickering. Week 2 at the Karma Lounge in Oshawa Sunday OSHAWA -- The Joint has earned a date in the Bandwarz final showcase. Round 1 of Bandwarz 2010 was held last Saturday, with six bands taking the stage in Oshawa. But the Whitby-based foursome, Jon Tyler Smith, Aaron Tymec, Warren Gies and Tyler Hodgkinson, made the biggest impression on the judg- es’ eyes and ears. “They looked like rock stars and their songs were good,” said judge Brian Vince of the band The Hard Party, in a press release. ”They have good potential and their songs are only going to get better.” As for the bands that didn’t advance, they still have a chance to make the final and be crowned champion, and that’s where you come in. Visit www.rogerstv. com and vote for your favourite among those that didn’t win one of the weekly showcases. If you missed last week’s concert, there’s still a lot more music to come. Continuing Education Languages Ajacian created online magazine As those inside our industry are well aware, and those outside are somewhat aware, the newspaper business is going through major changes. All manner of publica- tions are closing, consolidating and contracting, which is why someone like Emily Santos, of Ajax, is a publisher’s dream. Emily, 22, is the creator of an online magazine covering Dur- ham Region’s music scene and national and international art- ists. She came to my attention via interviews conducted with singer/songwriter Patrick Dorie and Dave Baksh of The Organ Thieves. Emily and I met one Wednesday evening at Poor Pelly’s Open Mic at the Thirsty Monk downtown. It turned out that her magazine, YourMediaPass.com, was actu- ally her second choice. Her pre- ferred medium is print. She is a lover of words, of lyrics as well as music. Her work is her vocation. Her musical background is more mainstream but since starting her mag, she has become aware of the D-Rock’s substantial talent base and is now a fan of the scene and a champion. As a teenager, her goal was to become a print journalist. But because of this tumultuous time in the industry, she has had to put that aside. However, she chose not to put her passion aside and so the online zine was born. The site, I’m told, gets up to 400 unique hits per week, which means something to bean coun- ters. But I’m more interested in Emily’s creation as a piece of art in itself. She is determined to give the site a unique voice. “If you localize it, you get more readers,” she says. A unique voice speaking about unique voices is a formula for success, I think. Colin Medley, who spent so much time documenting Dur- ham acts, has moved to Toronto. His music videos now premiere on Pitchfork. There is a void since he left and one perhaps only the young can properly fill. It’s won- derful for all of us veterans in media to know that Generation Y-Not has that can-do spirit and will take up the task with glee. REVIEW First Of The Last To Know Peter Katz Curve Music First Of The Last To Know is the latest record from singer/song- writer Peter Katz. It is dedicated to musician Oliver Schroer and to two men who died in tragic cir- cumstances, Matthew Sheppard and Christopher Skinner. It’s a simple record befitting such subjects and the well of empathy here runs deeps. It’s contemplative and serene with instrumental augmentation pro- vided by Bryden Baird, The Good Lovelies, Melissa McClelland and fiddler Anne Lindsay, last seen in Durham with Blue Rodeo at the GM Centre. COLUMN Plenty on the docket for Annandale curlers BY JIM EASSON Again the Ontario finals for the Women’s Tankard and the Dominion Regalia Silver Tan- kard will be hosted on Annandale ice April 4. This event is the double-rink playdown that combines the scores of two teams to deter- mine a winner and is a single knockout. The zone playdown was competed at the Oshawa Curling Club at the end of January. Gord Nor- ton and Tim March teamed up in the men’s, but did not advance, and there was no wom- en’s entry from Annandale. A junior mixed Annandale team of Josh Hall, Katelyn WasYlkiw, James McPherson, and Yvonne Lalonde along with coach Donna Hall has advanced to the provincial finals in Ilder- ton March 31 to April 3. Four other Annandale players will com- pete there too, curling under the Dixie Curl- ing Club banner. That team is Michael Bryson, Stacey Hogan, Sandy Martin, and Kristy Hurst with coach Susannah Moylan. There is an OCA mixed curling regional play- down for the Annandale team of Patrick Jans- sen, Clancy Grandy, Tim March, and Alison Kreviazuk at the Richmond Hill Curling Club March 27-28. Two winning teams advance to the provincials in Guelph, starting April 7, then one winner there represents Ontario in the Canadian mixed championship in Burl- ington next November. Pickering resident Richard Hart is vice on the Ontario men’s curling championship team with Glenn Howard, Brent Laing and Craig Savill. Originally in their schedule, they planned to go to the 5th annual Victoria Curling Classic in Esquimalt, which runs through Sunday, but Laing advised that they did not have enough time off from work to make it happen. However, they will be heading to Dawson Creek, B.C. on April 13-18 to compete in the final 2009-10 Capital One Grand Slam of Curl- ing event, the Grey Power Players’ champion- ship. The best curling teams are set to go there. The Capital One Grand Slam of Curling announced 2010 Olympic gold medallist Kevin Martin (Edmonton), 2010 Brier cham- pion Kevin Koe (Edmonton), 2007 world championship gold medallist Glenn Howard (Coldwater), and defending Players’ cham- pion Randy Ferbey (Edmonton) will headline the men’s elite 16-team field. This event will feature both a men’s and women’s draw. Landles preps for new season Ajax driver hoping for better results in 2010 at Kawartha Speedway in Peterborough PETERBOROUGH -- There’s an age-old expression about going from the frying pan into the fire. Another says that if you can’t stand the heat, you should get out of the kitchen. Dave Landles’ kitchen is the interior of his 1981 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and each spring, summer and fall he survives the heat of the Better Carpet Thunder Car class at Kawartha Speedway. The 53-year-old Ajax resident is excited about the start of the new season and feels like he’s set some very attainable goals for the upcoming campaign. “To be honest, I’d have to say I’ll be disap- pointed if we don’t finish the year in the top 10 in points,” admitted Landles. “We were 15th in 2009 and I’m sure there wasn’t a single night where we weren’t capa- ble of doing better. It wasn’t a bad season, but we didn’t run with enough consistency to be a factor when it mattered. “With only 10 races on the schedule, we need to make sure we do our homework before we come to the track.” With just one top-five finish (from the 2008 season) on his resume, Landles and his crew of Matt Spence, Mike Poulton and Donny Beatty have already started putting in some long hours to get the #53 Durham Furnace Heating and Cooling machine ready for Kawartha’s 10th anniversary season. He says his first checkered flag in a heat race was one the biggest thrills of his eight- year driving career. With so many great driv- ers in the thunder car field on a regular basis, he knows it will take a solid team effort to make it to the next level. “We had a really hard hit last season, but needed to be ready for the next week of action,” said Landles. “The impact was so severe that it even cracked the motor. We did everything we could to make sure the car would run up to speed, but there might have been something we missed. That’s the beauty of the off-season. You get the chance to go over everything. Right after the season ended, we took off the body panels, checked the frame and cage and made sure that every- thing was in good shape.” With his wife Julya, children Krista, Mat- thew and new grandson Dominic cheering his every move, Landles, who is an HVAC technician and facilities specialist, says he enjoys the competition of racing hard and the friends he has made at the track. He feels this could be the year he gets a shot at the winner’s circle. The thunder car division has some tough runners, but being in the right place at the right time could make all the difference. PICKERINGADVERTISING FEATUREDurham Windows and Doors Brings Mobile Showroom To Your Door Wayne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door business a new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wayne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. Oshawa, ON MOBILE SHOWROOM Readers’ Choice Winner HOCKEY Team Red wins Durham West Atom championship Girls defeat Team Blue by a score of 5-1 DURHAM -- The Durham West Girls Atom HL cham- pionship game pitted the two top teams in the divi- sion in the heavily favored Team Blue against Team Red at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex. Team Blue had won the season series against Team Red with a record of 3-1-1. Both teams battled hard and had several good chances to score early in the game. Late in the first period, Teagan Gauss pounced on a rebound n front of the net and was able to put the puck past the Team Blue goaltender to open the scoring. Nicole White was out- standing on defence as she denied Team Blue from gaining the offensive zone. Team Blue took it to Team Red early in the second period, but Can- dace Whall lived up to her name and kept Team Blue off the score sheet. Inspired by her play, Team Red battled right back and their second goal of the game came late in the second as Macken- zie Abbott slammed home the puck making it 2-0. Abbott added another early in the third, with the assist going to Macey Law- rence. Some ten seconds later, Team Blue was able to penetrate the defensive zone and beat Whall to make it close. However, Carah Jones had other ideas as she scored two minutes later with a blistering shot from high in the slot to make it 4-1. Abbott then capped off her hat trick to make the final 5-1 and give Team Red the Atom house league championship title. Team members are Mackenzie Abbott, Emily Broomfield, Jamie Brown, Breanne Desa, Teagan Gauss, Carah Jones, Karis- sa Lee, Macey Lawrence, Sarah Lawrence, Rebec- ca Morsillo, Nicole White, Candace Whall. The team’s coaching staff consists of Brad Lawrence (assistant coach), Jaimie Abbott (assistant coach), Sandy Newton (assistant coach), Drina Hill (train- er) and Scott Hill (coach).
