Pickering man faces six to eight
months in jail, $2-million civil lawsuit
following guilty plea
DENISE BALKISSOON
newsroom@durhamregion.com
TORONTO -- The Pickering man who shoved Oasis gui-
tarist Noel Gallagher off the stage is facing six to eight
months in jail and a $2-million civil lawsuit.
Daniel Sullivan, 48, has pleaded guilty to causing bodi-
ly harm for the incident in which he went backstage and
pushed the elder Gallagher brother into some sound
equipment during the Virgin Music Festival in September
2008.
“It was as if I had been hit by a bus,” said Mr. Gallagher,
in a victim impact statement read by the Crown attorney
Tuesday.
Mr. Gallagher, who did not attend Toronto court in per-
son, suffered three broken and dislodged ribs in the inci-
dent, which his English chiropractor said was the result of
the push, not the fall.
Oasis had to cancel numerous concerts that year, includ-
ing a few that were to be broadcast on television.
Mr. Gallagher’s statement said he suffered three months
of “severe pain” and that he sometimes still feels “painful
twinges.”
Mr. Sullivan will be sentenced on April 21. The Crown
asked Judge Richard Schneider for a six- to eight-month
jail sentence, arguing that Mr. Sullivan’s admitted drunk-
enness wasn’t an excuse for the “bizarre act.”
The Pickering man’s lawyer, John Collins, argued for a
conditional sentence to be served in the community, not
in jail. Mr. Sullivan is a first-time offender, said Mr. Collins,
and has suffered since the incident.
International media camped outside his Pickering home,
said Mr. Collins. One British tabloid told Mr. Sullivan that
if he didn’t consent to an interview, the paper would print
a story saying the father of three was acting out because
Mr. Gallagher was having an affair with his wife.
The assault happened during a music festival on the
Toronto islands. Oasis had just launched into its 1995
hit (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? when Mr. Sullivan
sneaked past security and charged into the guitarist from
behind.
He then lunged at Mr. Gallagher’s younger brother,
Liam, but was tackled by security guards. Mr. Sullivan
later said he was so drunk he had no recollection of the
incident, how he got backstage, or of the push itself.
In the moments after the tackle, Mr. Gallagher walked
offstage, where he stayed for several minutes before
returning to perform the last 20 minutes of the set.
The musician went to Toronto General Hospital for X-rays;
a doctor said he had internal bruising. The band cancelled
concerts in London, Ont., and New York City, and two weeks
later, Mr. Gallagher was diagnosed with broken ribs in London,
England. More concerts and television appearances were can-
celled that fall.

“It is a relaxing hobby that allows you to personalize your
yarn projects from start to finish,” she said.
The course will allow students to learn some of the histo-
ry of spinning, the proper fibre to choose, whether from sheep
or all ready to spin, and how to spin for various crafting needs,
from knitting to crochet and even embroidery.
The eight-week course starts Thursday, May 6 from 7 to
9:30 p.m. in the Redman House at the Pickering Museum Vil-
lage, 2365 Concession Rd. 6.

a savage attack near a school Monday.
The victim was threatened with a hammer, repeatedly stabbed
in the head and kicked in the face during the attack, which
occurred near J. Clarke Richardson school on Harwood Avenue

result of an ongoing dispute over a female acquaintance. The vic-
tim was accosted by a group of teenagers who pulled up beside
him in a car, then fled after the assault. A friend of the victim
found him and drove him to hospital, police said. He was treated

Coyotes raise safety
concerns for those
with small children
To the editor:
Re: ‘No easy solution for coyotes in Ajax’,
March 16.
Thank you for the story about the coy-
otes in Hermitage Park. Although many
people are now aware that the coyotes
are in the neighbourhood, the coyotes are
also wandering in our backyards.
On Sunday, we witnessed two coyotes
behind our house in our neighbour’s yard
(the backyards between Pollard Cres-
cent and Wickens Crescent just north of
the park). The male coyote was very large
(the size of a German shepherd) and the
female coyote was smaller and scruffi-
er. Both coyotes easily cleared a five-foot
fence to move on to another yard. We
have two children under age three and
two indoor cats, and with the presence of
the coyotes in our own backyards, we’re
very concerned with the safety of our chil-
dren and our pets.

POLITICS
Electing Durham
chairman an issue
of taxation with
representation
To the editor:
Democracy pertaining to the highest
office in Durham Region requires at least
three things:
1. Important decisions are made in the
open, and this ‘direct elect’ of the Region-
al chair issue has been voted on in three
municipalities.
Approximately 90 per cent voted to
directly elect Durham’s chairman and
now Clarington is voting on the upcoming
ballot this fall.
2. The public and its representatives have
a right to debate this issue now and again
so decisions can be revised in what the
public discovers and wants.
3. Those elected to Regional Council who
make the big decisions are accountable to
voters.
An elected Durham Regional chair is a
huge issue, an issue of taxation with rep-
resentation and coming to a vote in Dur-
ham this October’s election.

SENATE
Conservative Senator
Duffy must have
skipped some of his
journalism classes
To the editor:
Last week, Senator Mike Duffy pro-
claimed that journalism students in Can-
ada are entering the profession with a
left-wing political bias because they are
required to read the full text of Noam
Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent.
Having studied journalism as a political
science and communication studies stu-
dent, I am a bit lost on how the senator
can make such claims.
First, I have never encountered a single
journalism student who has been assigned
any of Chomsky’s books as course text-
books.
Second, most lessons on how to be a
good journalist hinge on courses that
focus on integrity, responsibility and eth-
ics.
It is obvious by Mr. Duffy’s comments
that he must have skipped some of his
journalism courses when learning the
profession.
It is hard to distinguish what he used to
say on his political news show and what
he now says as a Conservative senator.

Education options and opportunities for Durham youth
A little ceremony in Ajax last week went by
virtually unnoticed when a young Durham
man received his high school education
diploma.
Jonathan Phillips, 21, took part in an emo-
tional and uplifting ceremony when his
mother tearfully gave him a class ring for his
academic efforts, closing one chapter in his
life and opening it up to countless others.
Mr. Phillips is one of the success stories
at Grove School, where non-traditional
students are able to achieve what the vast
majority of students in Durham Region take
for granted: high school graduation.
Grove School is a partnership between the
Durham District School Board and Durham
Youth Housing in which homeless youth
are able to attend high school classes and
earn credits toward their Ontario Second-
ary School Graduation Diploma.
Its unique approach is required because
of the unique circumstances that bring
these youth to the shelter and, ultimately,
the school.Mr. Phillips and others like him,
for whatever reason, had difficulty learning
in a traditional academic setting. The Grove
School knocks down those boundaries and
finds ways to help these students achieve.
It’s vital in a knowledge-based economy
that young people have the same oppor-
tunities to learn and achieve, regardless of
their personal circumstances.
This proactive approach between the
DDSB and Durham Youth Housing iden-
tifies and responds to alternative learning
styles. It offers opportunities to at-risk youth
who feel they have few opportunities. It pro-
vides an important focus on our fundamen-
tal belief in education for all and, ultimate-
ly, helps to create brighter futures for teens
and young adults already facing hardship in
their lives.
Mr. Phillips now has his sights set on post-
secondary studies and is applying to George
Brown College for culinary studies.
His story, while still unfolding, now holds
a lot of promise for others at Durham Youth
Housing who find themselves struggling
with homelessness and other personal
issues. He is living proof to other youth that
even when things seem to be at their worst,
there are always options, always alterna-
tives.
Grove School and Durham Youth Housing
embody this in their alternative school pro-
gram. We congratulate both organizations
and the teachers who have so far made it
work. And we wish Mr. Phillips and those
who follow in his footsteps every success.
These young students must first learn who
they are. With this unique and important
program, they can also find out who they
want to be.

community, whether it’s back home, or into
a long-term care facility. It officially opened
to the public March 25.
“It makes it possible to provide better ser-
vice for the growing needs of our west Dur-
ham facility,” said Rouge Valley president
and CEO Rik Ganderton.
Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan, Ajax-Pickering
MPP Joe Dickson and Pickering-Scarbor-
ough East MPP Wayne Arthurs were some of
the politicians celebrating the opening.
“This facility is growing and getting bet-
ter and better, day by day,” said Mayor Ryan,
who hinted to his provincial counterparts
that the Province should invest even more
money into the hospital.
The new 22,000-square-foot unit, which
cost in the range of $8 million to $10 million
to build, consists of 30 new beds and pro-
vides about double the space of the exist-
ing unit. Features include spacious patient
rooms where each bed is cued to access nat-
ural sunlight. Patient safety equipment such
as ceiling lifts and adjustable height beds
in each room will help prevent falls. New
equipment such as therapeutic hydraulic
bath tubs will facilitate smoother patient
transfers.
The 30 rooms include single-bed rooms,
two-bed rooms, three-bed rooms and iso-
lation rooms, said Rick Gowrie, the senior
director of planning and capital redevelop-
ment and support services.
The new facility also has a focus on recre-
ational therapy. Mr. Gowrie showed off the
new assessment kitchen that teaches life
skills and a bathtub so patients can practise
getting in and out by themselves.
“It’s exciting to see the unit open,” Mr.
Gowrie said. “It’ll be even more exciting to
see it being populated.”
One of Rouge Valley’s rehabilitation man-
agers, Karl Wong, said some of the biggest
challenges patients face when transferring
from the hospital back into the community
are getting in and out of bed, up and down
stairs and transferring onto and off of the
toilet. A brand new physical therapy room
includes a number of machines to help get
patients back on track and feel comfortable
with their day-to-day routines.
And the new unit has greatly improved
staff morale, even before the opening.
“It’s gorgeous,” Mr. Wong said. “It’s a beau-
tiful space. I joke with these guys it’s like
moving from a smaller house to a bigger
place down the street.”
Mr. Gowrie said future work will include a
new laboratory and an expanded ambulato-
ry care unit. The entire expansion is expect-
ed to be finished this fall.

PICKERING -- Winning students from
across Durham Region showcased
their creativity at the 2010 Race Rela-
tions Forum in Pickering on Wednesday
night.
In September, the Pickering advisory
committee on race relations and equi-
ty partnered with the Durham District
School Board and the Durham Catholic
District School Board to present a cre-
ative arts contest called In Your Words
and Expressions.
The contest invited students from
grades 2 through 12 throughout Dur-
ham to submit a written or creative arts
piece based on the statement “My per-
fect world is ...”
A panel of judges, including Ajax-
Pickering MP Mark Holland and
Metroland Durham Region Media Group
managing editor Mike Johnston for the
written word, singer-songwriter Steve
Holt for the music and local artist Sharon
Steinhaus of the PineRidge Arts Council
for the art submissions, reviewed more
than 150 entries and selected winners
for each age category.
The winning students shared their
entries at the forum on Wednesday,
March 24 at the Pickering Civic Com-
plex, One The Esplanade.
The event commemorated March 21,
The International Day for the Elimi-
nation of Racial Discrimination, and
included guest speaker Jean Augustine,
Fairness Commissioner of Ontario.
The race relations committee, made up
of municipal leaders, school board rep-
resentatives, community cultural associ-

Operating a business in today’s economic environ-
ment takes a lot of commitment on the part of the
owner and its employees. Usually, the owners’ focus is
on obtaining new clients, keeping existing clients, deal-
ing with staff and other day-to-day issues that arise.
But all too often one of the most important factors in
running a successful business is either over-looked or
pushed off to the side to be dealt with at a later date. And
that factor is accounting and bookkeeping. Having a full-
time bookkeeper or accountant is not usually a viable
financial option or necessary for many businesses. That’s
where MR Accounting and Bookkeeping comes in.
Founded by Michael J. Robb, a Certified Man-
agement Accountant since 1994, MR Account-
ing & Bookkeeping Inc., was established to provide
businesses and individuals with one-stop account-
ing solutions including; financial statement prepa-
ration, payroll processing, collections, budgeting
and forecasting, corporate, personal and commod-
ity (GST & PST) tax returns and business plans.
But what does all this mean to the business owner?
As an expert in the accounting field, Michael can
help you keep your company on track, or get it
back on track and provide you with the advice
and expertise to make your company the profit-
able and viable entity you want and need it to be.

Opening Soon In Whitby
Stay tuned for Grand Opening Dates to be announced on www.kidkiekobblerwhitby.com.
To celebrate the opening, there will be face painting, give-aways and balloons for the kids.
Parents will also save 25 per cent off all new stock!
Kiddie Kobbler specializes in children’s shoes and carries high quality lines from
companies such as Kamik, Crocs, Geox, New Balance, Converse, Sketchers, Nike, Puma,
Uggs and more! Parents will love Stride Rite for babies and rst walkers.
“We’ve got the latest styles of footwear and accessories to ensure your child is ready
for action!” says owner Alejandra Gamboa-Prendin.
There is a huge selection of shoes for newborns up to the early teen years, with
styles for every occasion. From performance running shoes to sparkly sneakers, there is a
pair for even the choosiest child.
At Kiddie Kobbler, the focus is on customer service and every staff member has been
trained on how to properly measure children’s feet to ensure they get the right size of shoe.
They can also make recommendations as to what shoes will be best for your child, based on
their size and activity levels.
Once your child starts walking or shows pre-walker signs (pulling herself/himself up
and cruising), they are ready for their rst pair of shoes.
“The natural development of the feet, as well as overall posture and gait depends on
maximum freedom of movement,” says Alejandra. “All rst shoes should be light and exible
to conform to any movement of the feet while stretching, bending and turning and giving the
support developing feet need.”
In addition to shoes, Kiddie Kobbler also has a selection of clothing and
accessories.
“We understand that parents have many choices when it comes to footwear and
clothing for their children,” says Alejandra. “At Kiddie Kobbler, our mission is to ensure that
both parents and children have a calm and enjoyable shopping experience.”
Be sure to join the Kiddie Kobbler Shoe Club, which will earn you a free pair (based
on the average price paid) for every dozen pair you purchase.
Kiddie Kobbler is located at 304 Taunton Road, Unit K3 and is open Monday to
Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday

Marcus Carroll turns to the pro ranks
TERRY WILSON/OHL IMAGES
OWEN SOUND -- Ajax’s Marcus Carroll, shown here as a member of the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack,
has signed with the East Coast League’s Utah Grizzlies.
OHL grad signs
with Utah of the
East Coast
Hockey League
UTAH -- As one career door
closed, another opened for Mar-
cus Carroll.
The 21-year-old Ajax native
signed an amateur tryout agree-
ment with the East Coast Hock-
ey League’s Utah Grizzlies last
week, just days after his Ontario
Hockey League career came to a
close. Carroll spent five years in
the OHL with the Owen Sound
Attack and served as captain
this season, compiling 25 goals
and 62 points in 67 games with
81 penalty minutes.
However, the rebuilding club
missed the playoffs, thus ending
Carroll’s time in the league.
He didn’t have much time
to look back on a decent OHL
career, though, one that saw
him become Owen Sound’s all-
time leader in games played.
Carroll suited up in his first
game for the Grizzlies on
March 16, but failed to find the
scoresheet. He did, however,
collect his first point as a profes-
sional a night later in a 5-4 loss
to Idaho, drawing an assist on a
Tom May third-period marker.
Carroll has since played in two
more games with the Grizzles,
who have six games remaining
in the ECHL regular season.
The club, which sits last in
the National Conference’s four-
team West Division, but only
two points back of second, will
the play Pacific division leading
Bakersfield Condors three times
at home and then hit the road
for three more against the Vic-
toria Salmon Kings, one of the
teams they attempt to chance
down in the divisional stand-
ings.
At 30-28-3-5, the Grizzlies sit
seventh in their conference,
but could finish as high as third
depending on how they show in
their final stretch of games.

the title in overtime.

HAMILTON -- The Durham City
Major Atom #1 boys’ basketball
team competed in the annual
Blessed Sacrament tournament
which took place in Hamilton.
The team continues to have
success, winning gold in the pre-
vious three years, but this was the
first time winning gold in Divi-
sion 1.
The boys got off to a slow start
in the preliminary round, losing
their first game to Vaughan Pan-
thers #2 40-37, but rebounded
and went on to beat Brampton
Warriors #1 52-45, Guelph CYO
49-45 and Newman Youth 54-37
before reaching the finals against
the tournament favorite Blessed
Sacrament #1.
The Bulldogs were being out-
played in the first half, down at
one point by 16 points, but man-
aged to cut the deficit to eight by
half time. In the second half, the
Bulldogs continued to fight from
behind, with Jordan Henry and
Trea Wharton leading the way.
With less than two minutes
remaining and down by seven,
the Bulldogs’ Trea Wharton hit
two three-pointers to eventually
force the first overtime.
It took a second overtime, great
team defence and more clutch
baskets from Jordan Henry to
clinch the victory for the Bull-
dogs, winning the game 86-83.
Every player had to step his
game up defending and rebound-
ing, especially in the overtime
periods when key players fouled
out.
Tournament MVP was shared
by Jordan Henry and Trea Whar-
ton.
The tournament success comes
at a good time for the Bulldogs
Major Atom #1 team as it heads
into the provincials.
Team members are Dejour
Millington, Jordan Henry, Tiron
James, Mekhi Mclean, Nicholas
Holland, Airon Purdon, Kenya
Gerald, Elijah James, Jayden
Thomas Hutchinson, Trea Whar-
ton, Brandon Brissoon, Alek-
sander Evans. Head coach is

PSC continues to offer special needs programs
Registration for
2010 outdoor
season has
already started
PICKERING -- The mis-
sion of the Pickering Soc-
cer Club is to create and
enhance opportunities to
participate, develop and
excel in the sport of soc-
cer.
They provide that oppor-
tunity to some 4,500 soc-
cer players, reaching
almost 20 per cent of the
local population through
the players, coaches and
team staff, referees and
countless volunteers.
However, according to
the club, members feel
that there are many chil-
dren and youth in the
community who want to
play soccer but are unwill-
ing, or feel unable, to par-
ticipate in the programs
currently offered.
Therefore, in the sec-
ond year of partnership,
the PSC has continued to
work with Special Olym-
pics Ontario to offer grass-
roots soccer programs to
those in the community
with special needs.
“We are thrilled to be
continuing this partner-
ship.
“Our program has grown
over the past year and
we hope to provide a fun
night of soccer for even
more special needs ath-
letes this summer. We
were so popular with vol-
unteers this winter that
many sessions featured a
one-to-one athlete/coach
ratio,” states Franco Tav-
erna, girls’ competitive
director.
“Playing soccer pro-
motes physical fitness,
self confidence and social
skills and provides oppor-
tunities to make new
friends for both the ath-
letes and volunteers”.
Registration of the 2010
outdoor season has start-
ed.
Players interested in reg-
istering, or people inter-
ested in volunteering,
contact Franco Taverna at
girlsrep@pickeringsoccer.
ca or visit the club office.
PICKERING -- The interme-
diate girls’ basketball team
at Frenchman’s Bay has
enjoyed a strong successful
season.
The Pickering team was
runner-up in the area cham-
pionship, advancing to the
final four for the regional
finals, consisting of the top
four teams in the Durham
Region. Frenchman’s Bay
defeated Williamsburg Pub-
lic School from Oshawa,
advancing to the champi-
onship game.
It was a very close match
but the girls narrowly defeat-
ed Captain Vandenbos Pub-
lic School from Whitby 26-
24.
The team consisted of
Chantal Gauthier, Emily
Forbes, Cheyenne Creigh-
ton, Gabi Lammana, Laura
Dougall, Tianna Davis,
Nathalee Ewers, Venus
Prince Hanson, Aliyah Fras-
er, Gloria Asse, Cassie Sand-

In Loving Memory of my
Beloved Sister Dulcie
and Brother-in-law Reg.
Reg passed away after a short illness
on January 9th, 2010 and after a nine
month courageous fi ght against cancer
Dulcie joined Reg on February 14, 2010.
They will be remembered by their
Canadian friends Helen McLean,
Rebecca Marriott, The McLean family,
The Fowler family and the Pryce family.
I am with you still in each dawn.
If tears could build you a stairway,
And memories a lane, I'd walk right up
to Heaven and bring you home again.

DURHAM REGION
SENIOR GAMES
The Durham Region Senior Games represents one of 40 districts
operating under the umbrella of the Ontario Senior Games Association (OSGA).
The OSGA is committed to enhancing the lives of Seniors in Ontario and promotes
their physical and mental health by running provincial competitions -
Actifest and Winterfest - in alternating years.
Actifest 2010 will be held in Oshawa
Our mandate at the District level is to offer these Games in Durham each year
in order to promote the ideals of the OSGA and to qualify participants to represent
