By a 15-8 vote (with five councillors absent), Regional councillors Wednesday approved a motion that could see a referendum ques- tion on municipal ballots in October. The question would ask residents if they favour having the chair- man selected by a general vote. Currently, at its inaugural meeting following the municipal election, Regional councillors vote on a chairman. “A lot of residents want the opportunity to debate the issue,” Pickering Councillor Bonnie Littley said. “Let the residents of Durham decide if they want a directly elected chairman.” Ajax Mayor Steve Parish said, “The people have the right to be consulted on something so elementary. The present system made sense in 1974 (when the Region was formed). Almost 40 years later, it doesn’t make sense.” In 2006, Pickering, Ajax and Oshawa included a ques- tion on the ballot and 88 per cent of voters supported having an elected chairman. Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson said the 28 Regional councillors “aren’t collectively the wisdom of Durham Region. We are just citizens. If you vote against it, you’re saying you don’t trust (the public’s) judgment.” Ajax Councillor Colleen Jordan said, “It’s important each municipality has the same question on the ballot. It gives us a snapshot in time. To say no, a councillor is saying they don’t want to hear what residents want to say. You have to change with the times. It’s called progress.” She added 54 per cent of the property tax bill covers regional services. But some politicians were outspoken against direct election of the chair- man. Brock Councillor John Grant said residents in the three northern municipalities “feel fairly disenfranchised now and we’ll be losing more of that. We’ll have party politics and we’ll lose our independence as munici- pal councillors.” Scugog Councillor Jim McMillen said, “The farm community, they don’t want anything to do with an elected chairman and neither does our coun- cil. We voted no way.” Whitby Mayor Pat Perkins said, “As much as I don’t disagree, I can’t sup- port the Region dictating to the local tier on how to go about it.” Coun. Littley said, “I understand that argument. This needs to be asked or this will never go away. We need to ask everybody the same question at the same time.” Before the question can be added on the ballot, Regional council has to pass a bylaw asking local municipalities to include the question. Also, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing must approve the question. Page 6 - Today’s editorial POLITICS Durham-wide referendum in the offing THE QUESTION “Are you in favour of the Council of the Regional Municipality of Durham pass- ing the necessary resolutions and bylaws to change the method of selecting its Chair from appointment by the members of Regional Council to election by general vote of all electors in the Region?” YES NO The people have the right to be consulted on something so elementary. Constable Glen Turpin, 40, could lose his job as a result of his actions in March of 2006, Superior Court Justice Myrna Lack said in handing the veteran cop a suspended sen- tence March 11. “He faces a potential loss of employment, which is a daunting prospect for him,” Justice Lack said. Justice Lack found Const. Turpin guilty of assault causing bodily harm and uttering a threat after a judge-alone trial in late 2009. Court heard Const. Turpin “grounded” a pris- oner, pushing the man to the floor of a cell at the Whitby police station. The Crown alleged an enraged Const. Turpin deliberately assault- ed the intoxicated man, who sustained a gash over his eye that required nine stitches. The man had earlier been tossed out of a downtown Whitby bar and was making a dis- turbance when Const. Turpin and his female partner arrived, court heard. Const. Turpin tried to talk the man into going home and sleeping it off but the man persisted in his behaviour and was taken into custody. On the way to the station. the man bashed his head against a Plexiglas barrier in the cruiser and showered the cops with foul language, Justice Lack said Thursday. “He hurled disgusting epithets at Mr. Turpin and his partner,” she said. At trial, the man admitted he’d been drunk and belligerent. Justice Lack noted that the man hadn’t filed a for- mal complaint against Const. Turpin until two years after the incident, when he was approached by police. Prosecutor Paula Thompson had sought a six-month jail term for Const. Turpin, arguing that his position of trust in the community war- ranted harsher pun- ishment than might be given an ordinary citizen for a similar offence. Defence lawyer Bill MacKenzie cited case law that supported a conditional discharge. Thursday, Justice Lack said that while imprisonment was not warranted, the convic- tion had to be registered. She ordered Const. Turpin to serve two years’ probation, during which he is to perform 120 hours of commu- nity service. Mr. MacKenzie said he plans to appeal the conviction. The health department is strongly recom- mending hepatitis B and C and HIV tests for people who received acupuncture at the spa, located at 487 Westney Rd. S. The announcement comes after a Durham police investigation resulted in the arrest of Jenny Tran of the Ajax Unisex Salon and Spa for posing as a qualified health-care provider in the areas of massage therapy, acupuncture and other services. Ms. Tran, 45, faces various fraud and forgery charges. The health depart- ment also charged Ms. Tran with violations under the Health Promotion and Protection Act. “At this time, we have no evidence of trans- mission of infectious diseases, but because of the potential use of non-sterile equipment or improper infection control practices, there is risk which we believe to be relatively low,” said Ross MacEachern, manager of environ- mental health for the health department. “Therefore, we’re urging anyone who received acupuncture care at this facility to follow-up with their health-care provider on the recommended blood tests required to rule out blood-borne diseases such as hep- atitis B and C, and HIV. These blood-borne diseases can be present without symptoms and can be spread to others.” The health department is also asking people who received acupuncture at the spa to take precautions to stop the potential spread of infection, including using a condom for sex- ual activity and not sharing objects that may contain traces of blood such as razor blades, nail clippers, scissors, needles or syringes. These precautions should be followed for at least six months from the last time people received acupuncture at the facility. On Thursday afternoon, the salon was locked up, though a large banner still adver- tised acupuncture services. Additional adver- tising on the window suggested acupuncture and osteopathy for a variety of medical con- ditions including stroke, diabetes and infer- tility. For more information on blood borne dis- eases or blood tests, residents can contact the Durham Health Connection Line at 1-800- 841-2729. Around 70 people have signed a petition asking the MPP for more action regard- ing the pipe that takes sewage from mostly York and partly Durham to the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in south Pickering for treatment. The petition reads as follows: “I am unsatisfied with MPP Wayne Arthurs’ current lack of efforts against the York-Durham Sewer system. I want Wayne Arthurs to take a strong personal stand, and support his Pickering residents by becom- ing actively involved with the opposition.” The petition was first circulated at a recent rally at Mr. Arthurs’s Pickering constituen- cy office at Kingston and Altona roads. Mr. Arthurs said in an interview he missed the protest as he was at a conference in Scar- borough that day. Pickering residents have been battling for nearly two years a proposed odour control facility that was originally planned to go near Cherrywood West as part of the expan- sion of the pipe. In the summer, the location of the facility was changed to just west of York-Durham Townline Road and north of Taunton Road. Unsatisfied, Pickering council in 2009 passed a number of resolutions asking the Province to delay its decision on the envi- ronmental assessment of the expansion until an acceptable location has been found for the facility. It’s also launched a legal bat- tle against York for breaching the memoran- dum of understanding York and Pickering signed in 2005, which stated York would act fairly and consult with residents, property owners and the City. Mr. Arthurs has written a letter asking the Ministry of the Environment John Gerret- sen to address resident concerns. “I ask that you ensure that ministry offi- cials fully understand the concerns, and that those officials take every opportunity to meet with the residents of Pickering and the City of Pickering council,” Mr. Arthurs said in the letter. Residents feel Mr. Arthurs can do more. “The goal generally is to have him take ownership of the issue, have him become more accountable, have him achieve some- thing substantial,” said Peter Rodrigues, Stop the Stink member and rally organizer. Mr. Arthurs said he advised residents close to the beginning of the battle how to address the situation with Durham Region, which successfully fought to have the facil- ity moved out of Pickering. Although he’s shared residents’ concerns with the minis- ter, he said it’s no longer a political debate and is now up Mr. Gerretsen, who’s cur- rently considering the EA. He’ll either find it meets all the requirements and approve it, it passes but needs conditions put on it, or it’s so far offside that he rejects it, Mr. Arthurs said. “I frankly don’t see the latter happening,” he said, adding he isn’t opposed to the Big Pipe, since it has a long history between York and Durham, and it, as well as the water pollution control plant, serves a num- ber of Durham and York residents. “It’s a reality of growth in the community,” he said. Residents are also asking Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson for his help in the matter. Everywhere you go red-osier dogwood are getting redder and willow twigs yellow- er and deep purple buds of silver maples are bursting into bloom. But for the finest colours of early spring, find any open water where ducks are courting. Take binoculars and your camera and prepare to be amazed. Start with a common ordinary mallard. The drake is anything but ordinary now, his head a glossy emerald green, glorious enough for St. Patrick’s Day. A slim white necklace sets it off from the rich chestnut colour of his breast. And when he takes flight, silvery wings unfold to reveal a satin turquoise speculum -- a broad band of coloured feathers at the trailing edge, outlined in white. Add a bright yellow bill and red-orange feet, and it’s tough to find a more colourful bird in all of Canada. Male green-winged teal, just now arriving back in Durham marshes, have a swath of emerald green on the sides of their rufous head, and bright green speculums. In late March, northern shovelers will arrive in Durham ponds, most migrating through. Males have green heads, white chests and bold rufous flanks. In bright sunlight, at the right angle, you can see the green sheen on the head of a male common goldeneye, a hand- some black-and-white drake that in spring plumage has elegant black lines on its snowy folded wings. And talk about elegant. My husband and I were checking out the courtship contor- tions of red-breasted mergansers in Lake Ontario the other day -- watching them throw their heads back and stretch their necks, vying for attention from nearby females -- when he told me to take a look at some gadwalls. I did so rather reluctantly, since gadwalls are the most bland brown, uncolourful ducks of any, in my opinion. Not in spring, I discovered. From the intricate pink-gold streaking on the males’ folded wings to the fine char- coal dotting on their breasts, they were handsome indeed. Gorgeous, in fact. Hooded mergansers are gorgeous, too, the males’ velvety black plumage setting off a few bold white streaks, burnt-orange sides and the round white “hood” they raise when excited by a potential mate. They should already be in Durham wet- lands these days, arriving as soon as the first ice melts. A handful of drakes, crests erect, will be rushing any unpaired female. Soon they’ll be joined by the gaudiest, most colourful water bird of all, the wood duck. Red bill and red eye, yellow flanks, green “helmet” and back, chestnut throat, white stripes and streaks. Seeing a male wood duck turn iridescent in sunlight is enough to give anyone spring fever. Nature queries: (905) 725-2116 or mcarney@interlinks.net Durham outdoors writer Margaret Carney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far- flung corners of the planet. In springtime, ducks are courting on open water Margaret Carney Elect the Durham chairman Finally, the overdue discussion on direct- ly electing the Durham Regional chair- man appears to be gaining traction among regional politicians. Officials voted 15-8 this week in favour of a motion to include a referendum question on municipal election ballots in the fall to gauge the public’s support of a directly elected chairman. The question will ask residents if they favour directly electing the chairman in a general vote as opposed the current prac- tice of 28 regional politicians deciding who will best serve. Durham Region has been transformed since its inception in 1974. Its population has grown exponentially, urban communi- ties have matured, employers have set deep roots and governments have presided over many changes and challenges. The outdated process of having a handful of politicians choose who will lead the top tier of government in Durham isn’t demo- cratic, lacks accountability and creates a gap in representative governance. It’s vitally important that this issue not be set aside in favour of political expedien- cy and that voters across Durham Region have a collective say -- all at the same time -- to determine the future of the chairman- ship. To that end, the question must be sim- ple, direct and universal in municipali- ties across the Region: Do you support the direct election of the Durham Region- al Chairman? Yes or No. Furthermore, the result must be binding. In the event of a yes vote, we expect that the necessary provin- cial legislation permitting the direct elec- tion is in place for the 2014 municipal elec- tion. It’s clear that there is some impetus for reform. Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa includ- ed a similar question on their municipal ballots in 2006 and voters were overwhelm- ingly in favour of direct election. Democratically choosing the chair is also bolstered by the fact that the Regional por- tion of property tax bills across Durham account for more than half of their totals. It’s true that municipal voter turnout is consistently low. But in relative terms, it is low for most elections so that’s not a com- pelling argument against direct election. Those who do cast ballots do so with con- viction and deserve to have their demo- cratic intentions honoured. It’s time for this issue to be settled, democratically and con- clusively. Let voters across Durham Region have their say, on the same question and on the same day. The future will greet us either way. It’s important that our political institutions are shaped and sustained by the people who fund the Regional municipality and its services. By directly electing the Region- al chairman, we honour our democratic heritage, build accountability into the rep- resentation, and create mandates for the men and women we elect to serve us. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 12, 20107 AP PICKERING TOWN CENTRE 905-420-8000 Raise theWoof! Because the Ajax-Pickering cadets generally don’t need extreme cold gear, their command- ing officer borrowed arctic items from Canadian Forces Base Borden for the trip. Fifteen-year-old Christopher Mangas- er and 16-year-old Rebecca Fox were among the 22 teens going on the trip. “It’s part of an exchange, different corps in Canada go to different provinces,” said Christopher. The Ajax and Pickering cadets hosted a group from Quebec last year. “Basically we experience a different culture, living up there, it’s different from living down here,” said Christopher, add- ing the majority of people living in Fort Simpson are First Nations. Rebecca was expecting the worst and admitted she was a little nervous about going. “People say it’s not that cold, but I think it’s going to be freezing,” she said, adding she’s hoping to see the northern lights and perhaps a polar bear. The cadets have a number of activities planned while they’re there, including dog sledding. Since the group will be visiting army cadets, they’ll be participating in ori- enteering activities which involve using maps and compasses while finding their way. And they’ll do it wearing snow shoes. The visit also coincides with the Bea- vertail Jamboree, an annual festival in Fort Simpson that involves traditional games, snowmobile races and a talent show. The Ajax-Pickering cadets plan to participate in the talent show. Lieutenant Andrew Cherry, the com- manding officer for the Ajax-Pickering sea cadets, said the Department of National Defence is footing the bill for the trip. Lt. Cherry said the inter-provincial exchange program began 12 or 13 years ago. “It gets cadets moving across the coun- try meeting other cadets.” There’s a selection process each year and Lt. Cherry said the local cadets were lucky to nab the opportunity to go to the Northwest Territories. And it wasn’t just the teens who had to get used to the idea of heading north, but the parents as well. “Some of them were a little apprehen- sive, but they’ve all grown into it.” Rebecca said the visit to the Northwest Territories is just one of the trips she’s been on with sea cadets and the orga- nization has given her other opportuni- ties such as becoming a sailing coach, which would cost more than $30,000. She received the training for free through cadets. The cadets will arrive back home on March 15. They took maple leaf-shaped cookies, Olympic mitts and Olympic flags signed by the cadets as a gift for their counter- parts at Fort Simpson. Durham Regional Police fraud investiga- tors have been contacted by a number of victims, who lost money or had given out personal information. Between Feb. 13 and 26, several female victims told police they lost money through their contact with male acquaintances met on an online dating service. Police report suspects said they were involved in work-related charity efforts out of the country and requested funds be sent to them in Nigeria. Victims also noted per- sonal information, including their finan- cial details, was given to the suspects and shortly after money was taken from their accounts. Both male and female victims have been defrauded after several months of dealing with suspects. In some cases, police report victims were ‘worked’ for months before being duped. The Durham Music Mob is a new orga- nization with the aim of promoting the live music industry in Durham. As founder Rob MacArthur put it, the mob is “bands helping bands helping the live music industry in Durham Region.” Mr. MacArthur, who plays in the Lor- raine Davies and Too Drunk to Fish Band, said, “It’s pretty tough for bands playing bars locally. The owners can’t pay much.” The going rate for a band in Durham is between $100 and $175 per player for the night, he noted. Bar owners can choose bands from the organization’s website or Facebook page. “No band can provide a crowd. We let everyone know we’re playing and hope they come out,” Mr. MacArthur stated. Mob bands cater to people in their 30s and 40s, offering country, rock, blues and music from the 1970s and 1980s. “It’s mostly rock. The bands play music people can dance to.” Another feature is the different bands would promote the other bands, again with the hope of building the live music industry, he noted. Bands also have a ‘Call It a Night,’ so if it’s a slow night, the band will stop playing and the band would only receive 75 per cent of its rate. Mr. MacArthur has been approaching bands to gauge interest. There are about a dozen bands now with the organiza- tion. “We want bands, because we’re trying to add to it.” The Mob can also help out if a band has to drop a booking for whatever reason. Another band will step in to fill the gig, he stated. Mr. MacArthur noted no one is making money from the group. “No fees, no commissions. Everyone is just helping everyone.” For more information, contact Mr. MacArthur at 905-424-0155 or by e-mail at info@robmac.org. Whitby’s Class Act Dinner Theatre stages The Sensuous Senator WHITBY -- If tabloid news has taught us anything in recent years, it’s that politicians often have secrets they’re anxious to keep from their constituents. And if that politician is a presidential candidate, anxiety turns into des- peration. And so it is with Senator Henry Douglas in The Sensuous Senator, at Class Act Dinner Theatre from March 6 to April 24. “(He’s) running for the pres- idency of the United States based on a moralityish platform and his home life is not up to what his public life professes to be,” says director Jim Neilly. Weeks before the vote, Doug- las arranges for his wife to be out of town for the weekend and, once she’s out the door, asks his shapely secretary, Veronica, to spend the night in his townhouse. She can’t make it, so he arranges for an escort for the evening. That’s a quick outline, but along the way there’s a tonne of laughs as the senator’s wife isn’t able to leave town as planned. And, typical of a Michael Parker play, twists and a surprise end- ing. The play features theatre vet- erans Mike Woodbridge, of Scarborough, Barry Neilson, of Ajax, and Whitby’s Graham Gauthier. Neilly’s a theatre vet himself with credits at Whitby Court- house Theatre and Oshawa Lit- tle Theatre. The Whitby man started acting in Durham in the early 80s and began direct- ing when he started working at Class Act around six years ago. Class Act Dinner Theatre is at 104 Consumers Dr. in Whitby. Pickering hoopster honoured by the OCAA BY SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com PETERBOROUGH -- Jovain Wilson knows what it’s like to shoulder the load. For three years the 21-year-old Pickering native has done that on and off the court as the unquestioned leader of the Fleming Knights men’s basketball program. His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by those within the Ontario Colleges Athletic Associa- tion. At the recent year-end banquet, Wilson was named a first-team all-star, an all-Canadian and to top it off the OCAA men’s basketball player of the year. “It was kind of interesting because they had three awards that were mine, so they just told me to stay up there and get them at the same time,” Wilson said with a laugh, recalling his experience at the banquet. Wilson, a 6-foot-2 guard and graduate of Dunbarton High School, led the OCAA’s East Division in scoring, averaging a shade under 23 points per game to go along with 8.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals for the 15-5 Knights. What’s more is the fact Wilson played most of the year dealing with some serious injury issues. In the first game of the second semester, Wilson suffered a dislocated shoulder, result- ing in a torn labrum that will require surgery to repair. Due to the severity of the injury, at one point Wilson had even walked away from the game. “I wasn’t even supposed to play,” he recalls. “At one point I actually quit the season. I quit the season because the whole shoulder inju- ry took a toll on me, obviously physically and definitely mentally. “Every time I played basketball I always would wonder how I’d get through a game. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to take the ball strong at the defender because (the shoulder) could come out. “My game is attacking the basket and get- ting to the free throw line. I had to kind of ease up on that and try and be safe. It takes a toll on you mentally,” he adds. Wilson fought through the adversity, but at a cost. While discussing the torn labrum suf- fered in January, Wilson revealed that he is actually suffering from two such injuries, and due to the forthcoming surgery, will be absent from the Knights lineup next season. But not the sidelines. Knights’s coach Bill Crowdis, the man who convinced Wilson to join the program rather than head off to the University of Ottawa, has added the talented guard to his coaching staff for 2010-11. Crowdis, a Hall of Fame basketball player at Durham College, anticipates Wilson’s addi- tion to the coaching staff will do wonders for his roster. “They will respect him for not only the per- son he is but the player he has proven to be in this league,” Crowdis says. “That’s going to be invaluable to us, to have a coach a little less removed from the game.” For his part, Wilson, who hopes to return to the court at some point in the not-so-distant future, is looking forward to the new chal- lenge ahead. “I just finished playing with a lot of these guys, so it’s going to be interesting,” Wilson admits. “I was their leader on the court and now I am kind of going to be their leader off the court in taking a different approach to the game.” But before the coaching career starts, Wilson is in the running for one more player award: CCAA National Player of the Year. It will be handed out in advance of next week’s national championship tournament in Alberta. Reflecting on it all, Wilson was quick to note he hasn’t reached such lofty heights on his own. In addition to Crowdis’s influence, Wilson’s parents, Joan Wilson and Lester Cutting, have played their part. “My parents have played a big role in help- ing me succeed,” said Wilson, who also nar- rowly missed an academic all-Canadian hon- our from the OCAA.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 12, 201024 AP Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.com BASKETBALL Oakwood wins OFSAA gold OSHAWA -- It’s small consolation, but it took the best team in the province to eliminate a couple of Ajax high schools at the OFSAA Quad-A senior boys’ bas- ketball championships. Both J. Clarke and Pickering were defeated by the eventual champions of the tournament, as Oakwood Collegiate claimed gold on Wednesday night with a 47-34 victory over St. Thomas More of Hamilton. Oakwood, seeded sixth heading into the 18-team tournament held in Oshawa Monday through Wednesday, had a splendid run, knocking off the top three seeds in Pickering (#1), Mother Teresa (#2) and J. Clarke (#3) during their march to the gold medal. Pickering lost both of its games, opening with a 55-53 setback to the eventual silver medallist St. Thomas More, then fell 52-44 to Oakwood. J. Clarke registered wins of 70-39 over Nantyr Shores and 60-57 over St. Edmund Campion before falling in the quarterfinals 75-72 in overtime to Oak- wood. In the bronze medal game, Mother Teresa edged Vaughan 67-65. FOOTBALL Akeem Foster among top CFL draft prospects DURHAM -- A pair of locals will be strut- ting their stuff in front of Canadian Football League evaluators this weekend. Ajax’s Akeem Foster, a star receiver for St. Francis Xavier and a two-time Hec Crighton Trophy winning quarterback from Pickering, and Erik Glavic of the Universi- ty of Calgary, are among those competing in the Canadian Football Scouting’s 2010 National Invitational Combine. The combine begins Friday. At 6-foot-5 and 208 pounds, Foster brings good size to the receiver position and is coming off a solid year at St. FX. In 10 games he hauled 48 catches for 748 yards and six touchdowns and earned first-team all-Canadian status from the CIS. According to a prospect tracker from the CFL’s official website, Foster is consid- ered to be the ninth-best player available for the draft and second among receivers. Glavic, meanwhile, is a CFL free agent, having already passed through the draft. However, he and fellow quarterback invites Danny Brannagan of Queen’s and Justin Dunk of Guelph were called to the camp by the CFL in order to give them another opportunity to showcase their tal- ents. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 12, 201025 AP S p ringauction COMING MARCH 21st It’s never been so easy to purchase products or services in an online auction. On Tuesday, the seven and eight- year-olds practised with former NHLer Gary Roberts, although some of the players had to be told who he was. It’s the same team that was in the Pittsburgh area playing in a tour- nament when the arena roof col- lapsed. No one was injured in the February incident. Roberts skated with the team and helped the coaches run drills with the boys. He was contacted by the NHL alumni association about taking part in the Scotiabank NHL Alumni Skills Contest. “They called me and asked if I would come and spend an evening with the boys,” he said. Roberts wanted to talk to the boys about “how special the game is. I remember these days. It was a long time ago. It was the best days in hockey for me.” Team coach Gary Maclean said the boys were “pretty excited” about practising with the former hockey player. Although, he admit- ted, the coaches had to tell some of the boys who Roberts was. Sean Howard was excited about practising with Roberts because “he’s an NHL player and we’re gong to have fun.” Jackson Maclean was “excited. I’ve never seen a hockey player come into our practice.” Adam Woodard said it was “great because most people don’t get to practise with an NHL player, so it’s special.” Michael Roche plays defence and he was excited “because I like Gary Roberts.” Connor Hladik said, “Yeeesss” when asked if he was excited. “Because he played for our home team once and he’s an NHL play- er.” Goalie Riley Shore, defenceman Joshua Jeffrey and centre Nelson Inacio were excited because they had never met an NHL player before. Scott Valentin told his friends at school he would be skating with an NHL player, and they thought it was “pretty cool.” Matthew Dodson was excited “because I went to one of his games and I saw he was trying the hard- est.” Peyton Lee was happy to be prac- tising with an NHL player. Ryan Shore was excited “because when we went to Pittsburgh, the building fell and I was excited we got out.” Joshua Thomas was excited because “it’s my first time meeting Gary Roberts.” Jayden Gibbs was excited “because he’s my dad’s favourite hockey player and I like watching him play.” Liam Layton was excited “because we get to meet an NHL player and my mom absolutely loves Gary Roberts.” Tina Layton, the team’s manag- er, said, “It’s absolutely true. I love him, love him.” The coaches were told they had been selected prior to the Pitts- burgh trip. Following the practice, Roberts spoke to the team about the impor- tance of being active and getting away from hockey over the sum- mer. “Don’t sit inside playing video games and watching TV. Get out and enjoy your summer. I know how excited I was in September (when hockey would resume),” Roberts said. “Get out, get some fresh air, get active and play hockey when the season comes.” The 43-year-old still gets on the ice, having played shinny Tuesday afternoon. “Work hard, but most of all, have fun,” he said. “I was thrilled to come and skate with you guys tonight.” JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND AJAX -- NHL alumni Gary Roberts spent Tuesday night with the Ajax Knights Tyke White minor boys’ hockey team at the Ajax Community Centre as part of the Scotiabank NHL Alumni Skills Contest. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 12, 201026 AP CONTINUING EDUCATION Need Management Training? Randy loving and devoted husband of Bonnie. Caring and loving father of Ryan and Kylie. Dear son of Tom and the late Bernice. Brother of Chico (of Edmonton), Brian (of Vancouver), Laurie (of Kingston) and the late Leslie. Friends will be received at the ACCETTONE FUNERAL HOME 384 Finley Avenue, Ajax (905-428- 9090) on Saturday March 13th, 2010 from 11 am until the time of service in the chapel at 1 pm. In lieu of fl owers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. CUSHNIE, George Alexander - It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to our father and grandfather and your friend George on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. George was born July 26, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a graduate of The University of Manitoba (Bachelor of Commerce), he began his career in leasing at IAC. He met and married Vi (predeceased October 2007). After relo- cating a few times, the family fi nally settled in the Toronto area in 1961. George went on to a long and successful management career at Simpsons, then Page Flooring before retiring. As an only child, George cherished his time surrounded by his family. He will always be lovingly remembered by his son Jim Cushnie (Joan and grandchildren Leigh Lahti (Tyler), Drew and Amber), his daughter Sandra Bowser (Doug and grandchildren Kally, Julie, Tessa and Josee), his daughter Heather Mayhew (Michael and grandchildren Carly and Patrick). George leaves the legacy of being a strong, loving, and kind gentleman who supported and cared for us all deeply. Not just a sports fan, George was an avid curler and golfer. He will be remembered by dear friends Jack and Marg Holman and many others from the former Avonlea Curling Club and Scarboro Golf and Country Club. He proudly gave back to his community and served as a Rotarian with the North Scarbo- rough Rotary Club. He will be remembered fondly for his friendly good nature and his competitiveness. The family extends our gratitude to the staff at Abbeylawn Manor for the respect, wonderful care and kindness they gave to George. Our family will receive friends and family at a gathering to share memories and to celebrate George's life on Saturday, March 6 from 11a.m. to 2p.m. at McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Rd, Pickering Village, Ajax (905- 428-8488). In lieu of fl owers, the family would appreciate memorial donations be made to the Rouge Valley Health System - Ajax site. Online book of condolence may be signed at www.mceachnie-funeral.ca. During these tough economic times, businesses need an affordable way to advertise their products and services and create a name for themselves in the community. The Focus on Business advertising feature was designed to help businesses succeed at an affordable price. The feature has five zones: Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, and advertisers can choose to run in any number of them. If they want to target a specific area, they can choose one zone or if they want broad coverage they can choose to run in all five. Advertising packages are available for six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks, and discounted rates are available for longer-term commitments. “I have nothing but good things to say about the Focus on Business feature,” says Wayne Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows and Doors, who has been advertising in the feature for 15 years. Having an ad in the newspaper every week helps businesses build recognition. Readers who see the advertisement on a regular basis become familiar with the business. Running in the section long term shows potential customers that the business is consistent and is there for the long term. “I have been advertising for 15 years,” says Tom Susac, owner of Sports Station in Oshawa. “I have people tell me not to worry about giving them my number, because they see me in the paper every week.” The feature includes a 3” wide by 1.5” deep ad, but the best part is the free editorial that comes with each six week run. “The editorials are very powerful and are able to explain things better than you can in an ad,” says Tom. The articles will talk in-depth about the business and can include a photograph or image. Many advertisers find that the articles provide a surge in phone calls and sales. The articles allow readers to learn more about the businesses, including detailed information about the products and services they offer. The Focus on Business advertising feature is great investment for businesses. Many advertisers have seen a dramatic increase in their bottom line because of advertising in the section. “I figure that I spend about $5,000 annually on advertising in Focus on Business, and it definitely brings that back tenfold,” says Tom. Spaces are currently available in all five zones. Call today to book your space! For more information on the Focus on Business feature or to book an ad, please call Connie Baker at (905) 579-4400 ext. 2271 or email cbaker@durhamregion.com.durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 12, 201030 P Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? The Second Vice Presi- dent voted in to take office in 2013 is a young curler, Renee Lalonde, who has moved through the junior curling programs for many years. We still believe that 2014 will be the 50th anniversary for the curling club, so Renee will be the past president that year if all executive terms flow as planned. The Ontario Winter Games were held in Gravenhurst from March 4-6 and the Bevan rink from Annandale, who were competing in the boys curling, were victori- ous in a tiebreaker game for the gold medal to advance to the Canada Winter Games which are to be held in Hali- fax, Nova Scotia in February of next year. In their final game of the round robin, Skip Ben Bevan, Vice Carter Adair, Second Jake McGhee and Lead Corey Gaudette along with coach Jennifer McGhee had to beat the undefeated Jack Lindsay rink from St. George’s Golf and Country Club. They won that game 9- 5 in an extra end and forced a tiebreaker for later that same afternoon. The tiebreaker was another close, very well played game, and the Bevan rink beat the Lindsay team 3- 2 after eight ends. COLUMN Annandale rink wins gold at Ontario Winter Games Coach Jennifer McGhee said, “I am very proud of how well the boys played in all of their round robin games and the tiebreaker. Their only loss was an extra end game against Team Sagan and that game could have gone either way. After finishing second at provincials in February they were focused on what they wanted to achieve and did it. They are very excited to have won the gold and advance to Halifax as Team Ontario.” On the calendar next, a Junior Mixed Annandale team of Josh Hall, Katelyn WasYlkiw, James McPher- son, Yvonne Lalonde and coach Donna Hall advance to the Regional playdown March 13 at the Oshawa Curling Club. Then the OCA Mixed Curling Regional playdown for the Annan- dale team of Patrick Janssen, Clancy Grandy, Tim March and Alison Kreviazuk at the Richmond Hill Curling Club March 27-28. Pickering resident Richard Hart is vice on the Ontario Men’s Curling Champion- ship team competing in Hal- ifax at the Tim Hortons Brier. He helped his skip Glenn Howard to become the Ford Hot Shot on March 6, and win a two-year lease on a $25,000 Ford Taurus. With Brent Laing and Craig Sav- ill, the team is in their fifth Brier in a row, and Hart says it feels as fresh as his first. The team hopes to win the Canadian Championship and represent Canada at the Ford World Men’s Champi- onship April 3-11 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. SUBMITTED PHOTO DURHAM -- The Annandale bantam boys’ curling team of skip Ben Bevan, vice Carter Adair, second Jake McGhee and lead Corey Gaudette, along with coach Jennifer McGhee, won the gold medal at the Ontario Winter Games. The team has qualified for the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Nova Scotia. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 12, 201031 AP Friday, March 12th • 1 pm - 9 pm Saturday, March 13th • 10 am - 6 pm Sunday, March 14th • 10 am - 5 pm 99 Athol St. E., Oshawa www.metrolandshows.com • www.durhamregion.com Lanscaping • Home Renovation • Home Decor • Furniture • Lighting • Garden Products • Pools, Spas & More...
