More than $250,000 in property and cash were seized along with evidence of hundreds of fraudulent credit card accounts when Durham cops, working in conjunction with the OPP’s identity crime unit, arrested six suspects on more than 200 charges March 3. Authorities seized two vehicles and will apply to the courts for forfeiture of seven properties in Toronto, Ajax and Oshawa under pro- ceeds of crime legislation, police said. Cops seized items including a stain- less steel refrigerator, tropical plants and a grand piano, allegedly purchased with the proceeds of the scam, said fraud unit Detective Jeff Caplan. “They were living a lavish lifestyle,” Det. Caplan said. During the investigation Durham police and OPP conducted surveillance on sus- pects, watching as they made purchases with what cops allege were fake cred- it cards. One suspect bought a $12,000 watch as officers looked on. “We had multiple surveillance teams on them all the time,” Det. Caplan said. The investigation, dubbed Project Mor- gan, was launched when local police received information from financial insti- tutions that an organized identity theft ring had moved from British Columbia, where it had been operating for several years, to the Toronto area. Investigators allege that prior to that, the ring was active in the GTA. Police had obtained warrants and were poised to make arrests in 2001, but suspects gave them the slip, suddenly relocating to B.C. “They literally picked up and they were gone,” Det. Caplan said. “Whatev- er they couldn’t take with them, they left behind.” It is alleged the fraudsters created false credit accounts in two ways: by stealing the information of real people and having credit cards issued, or by obtaining cards using false identities, usually depicting themselves as recent immigrants. Once cards were issued, the bandits are alleged to have patiently managed the accounts, making small purchases and paying off balances until credit lim- its were increased. When the credit lim- its reached a certain level, the accounts would be drained of cash through advanc- es, paid off with fraudulent cheques and then drained again, police allege. The operation showed remarkable sophistication, Det. Caplan said. “The usual fraudster will apply for a card and max it out right away,” he said. Search warrants executed March 3 in Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and Toronto revealed evidence of a far-reaching fraud network, including numerous fake cred- it cards and fraudulent accounts, some dating back a decade, police said. Offi- cers seized a 2008 Land Rover and a 2001 Audi A6 along with more than $100,000 in other property alleged to have been obtained by crime, plus $150,000 in cash, including Canadian and U.S. currency, euros and Swiss francs. Facing multiple fraud-related and criminal organization charges are three residents of Bissland Drive in Ajax: Kuhen Nesha, also known as Sripuvanew Arumagampillai, 37; Ramanan Kenegara- jah, also known as Kanagaramanan Kana- garajah, 35; and Anantha Neeranjan, 33. Also charged are three Toronto residents: Hariharan Nesarajah, 38; Rajitha Kanag- arajah, 31, and Jeya Prakash Balan, 22. The local men are facing charges of pos- sessing child porn and making material available, but charges against other suspects announced March 10 speak to much more sinister activity, including sexual assault, voyeurism and manufacturing porn. The investigation, described by police as mas- sive, identified two young victims of sexual assault. Durham police joined the OPP and officers from forces throughout the province in car- rying out the investigation, part of a provin- cial strategy to battle child sexual abuse and Internet exploitation. Suspects identified Wednesday range in age from 17 to 61 and live in communities across Ontario. Police said the investigation continues and more arrests are anticipated. OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said the arrests were indicative of an ongoing com- mitment to track down and prosecute pur- veyors and users of child pornography. “The police services associated with the provincial strategy remain steadfast in their resolve to hunt down these child predators and keep our communities safe,” he said. Police executed 44 search warrants, laying 122 charges against 35 suspects. Matthew Smith, 21, of Ajax, is charged with a single count of making child pornography available. Ajax resident George Miller, 23, is charged with one count of possession of child porn and one count of making porn available. Both men were scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. Damage to the structure, in a trailer park on Dundas Street East, has been estimat- ed at $50,000 to $60,000, said Whitby Fire public education officer Shawna Coulter. Firefighters responded to a 911 call to the site just after 3:30 a.m. with three pumper trucks. Smoke and flames were visible as firefighters arrived; they had contained the blaze by 4:23 a.m. No injuries were reported, but it’s believed 20 cats and kittens taken in by the mobile home owner perished in the fire. The source of the blaze was determined to be an electrical space heater. Ms. Coulter said anyone using space heaters must ensure the devices are kept at least a metre away from flammable items, including curtains, upholstery and cloth- ing. Space heaters should be unplugged when not in use and homeowners also need to make sure smoke detectors are in working order. Shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, three dogs she was walking at Darlington Park, near the Gen- eral Motors headquarters in south Oshawa, went through the ice. “I have never felt so helpless in my life. I knew the ice was thin but my dogs are strong swimmers and I never thought this would happen,” said Mrs. Rousseau, shortly after Oshawa firefighters were able to pull the two labs from the icy waters. Mrs. Rousseau normally takes the two dogs, Quinton and Maya, to the Harmony Creek dog park, but because of the mud, a friend suggested Darlington Park. Her 13-year-old daughter was also along for the walk. It was her daughter who had suggested not letting the dogs off their leash. “That was my first and last time going there,” said Mrs. Rousseau who also had her son’s dog with her, a small puggle named Nacho. She said Maya, a black lab, started out onto the ice chasing some geese. Quinton and Nacho followed. “When we yelled to them to come back, all three just stopped and then went through the ice.” Nacho was able to pad- dle quickly to shore but Quinton and Maya just kept spinning and spinning in the water. “My daughter yelled for me to call 911,” which Mrs. Rousseau quickly did, but when the operator was unable to get an idea of where the dogs were located, she asked Mrs. Rousseau for her cellphone number so she could call back.“I gave them my husband’s cellphone number by mistake,” she recalls, which led to a very confusing conversation when the 911 operator called back her hus- band as he was heading home from work, asking him where his two dogs were in the lake. Her daughter went to the GM parking lot and led firefighters to the area. It wasn’t long before others heard her cries for help. “They (the dogs) were trying to get out and it was really hard for them,” said Tab- batha Parker, who was walking her dog near- by. Ms. Parker and other dog walkers had tried throwing branches and other debris into the water, attempting to rescue the dogs, who were paddling feverishly to stay afloat. Among the items thrown in the water to try and break the ice was a picnic table. “One time Maya stopped thrashing around and I thought she was going to go under,” recalled Mrs. Rousseau, who decided then to go into the water herself to help the animals. “I got in about halfway and felt the cold and said I had to get out.” It was shortly after that the fire department arrived and quickly got into the water to res- cue the dogs. Mrs. Rousseau estimates the dogs were in the water for about 40 minutes. “When we arrived there were several bystanders that had thrown some debris in the water to try and rescue the dogs, but the dogs were too far out and they were through the ice, they were stuck,” said Kevin Wilton, acting fire captain. A loud cheer from the crowd that had gath- ered to watch the rescue erupted when Quin- ton, the yellow lab, was able to paddle his way to shore. Capt. Wilton is warning other dog owners and parents to keep not only their pets, but their children away from ice. “At this time of year all the ice is unsafe, so stay away,” he said. You are saying we should be happy we still have our skins and as long as we pay the bully everything is going to be fine. Consider the trend for taxes; it’s always up while our incomes are stagnating or decreasing, and that applies to the major- ity of the population, government workers being an exception. You are saying that the property tax increase in Toronto is around 4 per cent and ours is only 2.15; shame on you for confusing the issue. Conveniently you are not telling us that property owners in Toronto pay roughly half of what we pay in Durham for the same market value house. Doru Olaru Ajax SPORTS Sexism in the Olympics To the editor: Whatever happened to equal treatment? Are we still in the stone age? It was a great shock to me when I found out that there are Olympic sports that women are not allowed to compete in. A perfect example is bobsledding. In the two-man bobsled race, our women got us a gold and a silver medal. Our men crashed. Despite this, women are not allowed to compete in the four-man bobsled race. Why?Another example is ski jumping. The general excuse for no women’s ski jumping is that they are not strong enough. Who can see Christine Nesbitt win gold in the ladies 1,000 metre speed skating race, and say that women are weak? In fact, women have won most of our medals. We have missed out on possible medals for Canada, and other countries around the world. There is no good explanation for letting men com- pete in a sport, and not women. We should stop this. Mary Hamilton Whitby POLITICS They’re telling me how to manage my finances? To the editor: It’s nice to see Jim Flaherty’s concern that as a Canadian, I must be protected from debt -- potentially becoming financially unable to pay my taxes. I’m sure that is the bottom line on the changes to mortgages, home buying, etc. Funny thing is, after the budget was delivered, did I hear that the government is $800 billion in debt? How is that possible? (How many trips to the ATM machine are they allowed per month? They must have one heck of an overdraft.) They are either really bad at balancing their economic chequebook or have added fuel to the fire of the conspirators’ theory that money is an illusion. Quoted at a Tim Horton’s, Mr. Flaherty stated, “Over the next fiscal year, Ottawa is projected to spend $280.5 billion, which includes the money it will spend on debt charges.” No kidding. All that being said, thank you, Mr. Harp- er and Mr. Flaherty for being so concerned that I am incapable of handling my financ- es. I guess it is true that those who can do, and those who can’t ... regulate. Jen Parkinson Whitby FEEDBACK Editorial captures the heart To the editor: Re: ‘One flag, two heroes, two proud but different families’. Thank you for this editorial. You cap- tured the heart of our country. Thank you for these words; how appropriate at such a time as this, when tears of joy and sorrow are being shed by two families who have captured the hearts of Canadians. Heroes who have given of themselves for the country they love. Families who have sacrificed their best to bring glory home to ‘The True North Strong and Free’. This has to be, by far, the best of the best that I have seen in a long time. You are to be commended. Beautiful. Margaret Krause Clarington Residents across Durham Region should brace themselves for delays in the collec- tion of their recyclable materials at the curb in the coming days and, possibly, weeks. Teamsters working at the Region’s trans- fer facility where recyclables are sorted and processed are on strike against their employer, Metro Municipal Recycling Ser- vices Inc., in seeking a first contract. The workers belong to Teamsters Local 419, and though they toil in a Durham- owned facility, they are not Regional employees. Though it’s hard to accept three dozen workers can effectively shut down Dur- ham’s recycling system, it does mean that the region’s residents who dutifully fill their blue boxes each week with plastics, aluminum, bottles and paper will have to make adjustments as the strike continues. In the interim, it’s important Durham residents demonstrate patience. If your blue box isn’t filled up come collection day, skip that one and fill it up for the next week. Other alternatives include separat- ing like materials for collection later, or, if they take up too much room in your garage or driveway, dropping them at local trans- fer stations unaffected by the strike. At the same time, it’s important that these workers, while free to pursue their contract demands, must also rely on the goodwill of the larger community. To that end, we encourage them to meet their union obli- gations in a fair and expeditious manner. Don’t unnecessarily delay trucks coming and going from the recovery facility. Con- duct yourselves honourably. Remain open to further negotiations. So, too, must Metro Municipal Recy- cling Services recognize its employees are conducting company business in a public facility paid for by Durham Region taxpay- ers. They must also meet their obligations and remain open to negotiations to mini- mize the labour disruption and get back to business. Meanwhile, we recognize Durham Region is in a unique position as little more than a landlord, but hope officials will exert whatever influence they can to ensure both sides keep bargaining to find a resolution to the impasse. In the end, it is the citizens in communi- ties across Durham Region who will be lit- erally left holding the blue box if no resolu- tion is forthcoming. Find common ground on both sides. Negotiate the issues that require honest and fair bargaining. Be prepared to give a little more if you demand a little more. Show respect for the other’s needs and for Durham Region’s citizens. Durham’s citizens are counting on a quick and lasting resolution to get the sort- ers back to work and the system back on its feet. Take steps to continue recycling during labour disruption of children with Big Brothers or Big Sisters, a school mentorship program, inter-genera- tional mentorship and group programs such as Go Girls! which focuses on healthy living and self-confidence. “Our vision is that every child in Ajax and Picking who needs a mentor has a mentor,” said Ms. Axford. “But we can’t do this alone, we do it with the help of the community and the help of our sponsors.” Don Terry, of Ontario Power Generation, is the honourary chairman of the event and someone who has first-hand experience at being a Big Brother. “It’s truly a tremendous program that changes lives and we’re proud to be support- ive,” said Mr. Terry. Among the people bowling at the event was Jessica Miller, of Ajax, along with her Little Sister, 10-year-old Ilene Webb. The two have been paired for about two- and-a-half years. “My mom was a Big Sister when she was in her 20s and she said she really enjoyed it and encouraged me to go for it,” said Ms. Miller. As for Ilene, she asked for a Big Sister. “I was jealous because of my big sister because she had a Big Sister too, so I told my mom I wanted a Big Sister, so they signed me up with Jessica,” she said. Ilene has a long list of activities she’s enjoyed with Jessica including visiting Lake Ontario, going to the movies, getting ice cream and playing golf. Ms. Miller also takes her to soc- cer practice. Highlights for Ilene include going to see Disney on Ice and watching Ms. Miller carry the Olympic torch. Ms. Miller said she has fun with her Little Sister and they learn from each other. “It’s just nice knowing I’ve been an influ- ence in her life.” The goal this year in Bowl for Kids Sake is to raise $50,000, said Melanie Stewart, executive director for Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax- Pickering. In addition to fundraising, Ms. Stewart said the organization is always looking for volun- teers. Kids are currently on a waiting list in both the Big Brothers program and the school mentorship program. She also encourages families to sign up children who can use a positive role model. One of the misconceptions about the Big Sisters program in particular is that it’s for girls who don’t have a mother or a female figure in their life. “Really, if your daughter or niece or some- body in your care could use a positive role model, you could apply for the young girl in your life,” said Ms. Stewart, adding that research shows that ideally all children should have at least three positive role mod- els in their lives. Durham job market warming up for spring: survey DURHAM -- Durham’s job market is warming up slightly with the arrival of spring, according to the latest hiring predictions. Information compiled by the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey indicates that 18 per cent of employers intend to hire for the upcoming quarter -- April to June -- while seven per cent antici- pate cutbacks. Another 73 per cent of employers polled intend to maintain staffing at existing levels, Manpower reported Tuesday. The sectors indicating the most potential for hiring are edu- cation and mining, followed by construction, according to the Manpower survey. The prospect for job growth in the region is far higher than the corresponding quarter in 2009, when no employ- ers anticipated no new hires, said Byrne Luft, vice-president of marketing for Manpower Canada. “This quarter’s net employment outlook indicates that the hopeful hiring climate reported in the previous quarter will continue to improve in the second quarter of 2010,” Mr. Luft said in a statement. Durham police to auction off goods, including bikes and tools NEWTONVILLE -- The next Durham Regional Police prop- erty auction is set for Friday, March 26. Items can be previewed at 2 p.m., while the auction will begin at 5 p.m. The event will be held at Grist Mill Auctions, 4532 Hwy. 2 in Newtonville. In the first year of the Pickering Ribfest, put on by the Rotary clubs of Ajax and Pickering in 2008, there was a nominal num- ber of dogs in attendance, said Lon Harnish, fundraising chair- man for the Ajax Rotary Club in a letter to council on behalf of both clubs. As the event grew, so did the number of four-legged guests. “It may be only a matter of time before someone is accidentally bitten,” Mr. Harnish said. “This could jeopardize our event insur- ance and put multiple parties at a potential liable risk.” After surveying a number of other Ribfests, the group found all other Rotary Ribfests are pet-free due to health and safety con- cerns. Council approved the request without debate at its latest meeting. The event will run on June 4, 5 and 6 at Esplanade Park, One the Esplanade. Pickering 905-420-9700 Full Inventory on www.pvw.com Just announced. The 2010 Golf GTI has been named the 2010 Canadian Car of the Year by AJAC. Danke, eh. And now for some good news. World Car Awards 2009 World Car of the Year 2010 Golf AJAC Best New SUV/CUV $35,000-$60,000 2010 Touareg TDI Clean Diesel AJAC Best New Family Car Under $30,000 2010 Golf Wagon TDI Clean Diesel AJAC Best New Sports/ Performance Car Under $50,000 2010 Golf GTI We don’t mean to boast, but last year 59 auto journalists from 25 countries declared the new Golf the 2009 World Car of the Year. In their words, the new Golf “feels more expensive than other family hatches, thanks to its solid build and high quality cabin.” They also said, “sitting on an outstanding chassis, the VW is more refi ned than its rivals.” We’re fl attered. And also a bit surprised that so many people from so many countries could reach an agreement on anything. Then the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada gave three of our vehicles AJAC awards. The 2010 Touareg TDI Clean Diesel won for Best New SUV/CUV $35,000 - $60,000. The 2010 Golf Wagon TDI Clean Diesel won for Best New Family Car under $30,000. And the 2010 Golf GTI won for Best New Sports/Performance Car under $50,000. Not bad considering only 12 awards were handed out, not that we’re counting. And it isn’t just the press that’s taking notice either. Volkswagen recently became the third-largest automaker in the world. Which means that a lot of people gave us something far more important than any award: a space in their driveway. And to us, that’s the best news of all. If you’d like to see any of our vehicles up close and personal, drop by Pickering Volkswagen. A new dental program will tar- get the approximately 11,400 low- income children and youth in Dur- ham Region. The Region is receiving $500,000 in start-up funding from the ministry of health to set up the program. However, Durham won’t go ahead with the initiative until it receives written confirmation from the min- istry that it will provide all operating costs. During a recent meeting of Region- al council’s health and social servic- es committee, Dr. Robert Kyle, the Region’s Medical Officer of Health, said the main dental clinic would be at the Whitby Mall, with some ser- vices provided at local community health centres. Dr. Kyle referred to that as a “hub and spoke model.” The Region rents space at the mall for other health programs. While he supports the program, Oshawa Councillor Robert Lutczyk questioned the location of the main site. “I like the hub and spoke. The prob- lem is the hub and the problem is the spoke,” Coun. Lutczyk said. “I imag- ine the ideal location for the hub would be near transit.” Medical and dental schools could be opened at UOIT and the clinic should be near there, he added. “The Whitby Mall is a good loca- tion,” Coun. Lutczyk said. “But, it won’t lead to the creation of a medi- cal school with a dental school part of it.” Dr. Kyle noted, “We deal with a lot of low-income clients at the Whitby site now. It makes sense to use that.” Having a clinic near UOIT and Durham College would be benefi- cial, especially if a medical school is opened at the university, the doctor agreed. The infrastructure was in place at the Whitby Mall, he said. “The ministry is anxious to get the project off the ground. The infra- structure is there.” Dr. Patricia Abbey, the director of the oral health division for the Region, said, “The Whitby Mall is a really good location. It’s right at Hwy. 2 and there’s ample free parking.” Coun. Lutczyk questioned if mov- ing the hub location would affect the funding. “We would forfeit the start-up funds,” Dr. Kyle said, adding an agree- ment has to be signed by March 31. “It requires council approval. A delay of three weeks would certainly make it extremely tight.” Regional Chairman Roger Ander- son said, “The bus goes by Thickson and Hwy. 2 as many times a day as it goes by Simcoe and Hwy. 2.” REGION Low-income dental clinic set to open in Durham BREAKING NEWS 24/7 >> durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 11, 2010Service Excellence for our Communities! www.durham.ca The Region of Durham, dedicated to maintaining outstanding standards of service, relies on the expertise and commitment of our employees. Call 905- 725-9991 CUSHNIE, George Alexander - It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to our father and grandfather and your friend George on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. George was born July 26, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a graduate of The University of Manitoba (Bachelor of Commerce), he began his career in leasing at IAC. He met and married Vi (predeceased October 2007). After relo- cating a few times, the family fi nally settled in the Toronto area in 1961. George went on to a long and successful management career at Simpsons, then Page Flooring before retiring. As an only child, George cherished his time surrounded by his family. He will always be lovingly remembered by his son Jim Cushnie (Joan and grandchildren Leigh Lahti (Tyler), Drew and Amber), his daughter Sandra Bowser (Doug and grandchildren Kally, Julie, Tessa and Josee), his daughter Heather Mayhew (Michael and grandchildren Carly and Patrick). George leaves the legacy of being a strong, loving, and kind gentleman who supported and cared for us all deeply. Not just a sports fan, George was an avid curler and golfer. He will be remembered by dear friends Jack and Marg Holman and many others from the former Avonlea Curling Club and Scarboro Golf and Country Club. He proudly gave back to his community and served as a Rotarian with the North Scarbo- rough Rotary Club. He will be remembered fondly for his friendly good nature and his competitiveness. The family extends our gratitude to the staff at Abbeylawn Manor for the respect, wonderful care and kindness they gave to George. Our family will receive friends and family at a gathering to share memories and to celebrate George's life on Saturday, March 6 from 11a.m. to 2p.m. at McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Rd, Pickering Village, Ajax (905- 428-8488). In lieu of fl owers, the family would appreciate memorial donations be made to the Rouge Valley Health System - Ajax site. Online book of condolence may be signed at www.mceachnie-funeral.ca.
