It wasn’t for her usual 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift as the morning manager at the McDonald’s Restaurant at Kingston and Liverpool roads in Pickering. After retiring just a few days before, she thought she was returning for a fundraiser until family, friends, staff and customers yelled “surprise” to celebrate her days of relaxation and travel to come. “I’m just in shock,” she said. When asked what she’ll miss most about serv- ing up breakfast every Monday to Friday, her answer was simple. “The people,” she said. In fact, Ms. Stenhouse enjoyed the See MANAGERS page 7 durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 5, 20102 AP GLOBAL AID Pickering-based charity continues to help Haiti News not fresh, but need, poverty just as strong: Pickering pastor BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It will soon be two months since a horrendous earthquake shook Haiti and killed more than 200,000 people, but a local pastor is reminding residents that the devastation is not over. “Haiti may not be in the news as it was a few weeks ago, but let’s keep Haiti and its people in our hearts,” Dr. Sam Martin, the head pastor of Pickering’s Safe Haven Worship Centre and founder of The Arms of Jesus Children’s Mis- sion Inc., said in an e-mail to sup- porters. The Arms of Jesus is a not-for- profit organization that provides nutrition, housing and educa- tion to residents in Cap Rouge, a town located in the mountainous area to the southwest of Port-au- Prince, and Jacmel, which is on the southern coast of the island. He’s happy to report the dona- tions the Arms of Jesus has col- lected since the earthquake hit have gone to good use and have benefited both the grief-stricken people and crumbling towns. In fact, more people are moving to Cap Rouge from larger cities each day, increasing the need signifi- cantly, Dr. Martin said. The Arms of Jesus team located in Jacmel, with help from local donors, has recently been able to provide a water purification sys- tem, which distributes one gal- lon of clean water every minute. It has also provided fresh and purified water, materials for blan- kets, rice, sugar, pasta, cooking oil, large bars of washing soap for health purposes, fish and much more. The team in Haiti has been rebuilding homes with the help of a “master builder” and will continue to do so “until the funds run out,” Dr. Martin said. Even the director in Jacmel and his family are living in a make- shift home using tarps while the work is being done. “This is an indication of the dedication and sacrificial service of the AOJ team,” Dr. Martin said. The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General of Canada has even sent a letter to Dr. Mar- tin thanking him and the Arms of Jesus for their good work in Haiti. BY LES WHITTINGTON AND BRUCE CAMPION-SMITH OTTAWA -- The federal gov- ernment has moved toward a more right-wing, corpo- rate-friendly Canada in a budget that features deep tax breaks for business, dis- mantles environmental safe- guards and signals cuts to programs and services used by millions of Canadians. The budget sends a mes- sage to the world that “Can- ada is open for business,” Finance Minister Jim Fla- herty declared as he tabled his fifth economic blueprint Thursday. It is a tough-minded docu- ment that serves up the first steps toward a smaller gov- ernment but still delivers $19 billion in extra spend- ing, the second phase of the Conservatives’ 2009 plan to jolt a sputtering economy. But Mr. Flaherty, Whitby- Oshawa MP, styled himself as a Dr. No, saying he turned down demands for funding as he put together what he called the smallest budget in terms of new spending in a decade. “Some very difficult deci- sions have been made,” he told reporters, citing the move to curb defence spending, freeze foreign aid and end years of unchecked overall spending increases by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government. And he acknowledged the budget’s two-pronged focus, saying if the Conservatives didn’t start cutting back now, it could be stuck with a permanent budget deficit. Yet even while forecasting budget deficits totaling $158 billion by 2014, Mr. Flaherty said his government’s plan for Canada requires Otta- wa to phase in deeper busi- ness tax reductions. Over the next five years, business will receive $54.8 billion in tax breaks. “Our business taxes are increasingly low and com- petitive,” Mr. Flaherty told MPs. “We are staying the course to having the lowest corporate income tax rate in the G7 (group of industrial nations) by 2012.” The government also introduced $300 million in tariff savings for manufac- turers, set up a commission to reduce “red tape” for busi- ness, increased funding to encourage advanced tech- nology industries and sig- nalled its readiness to open the door to more foreign investment in Canada. “We are building Canada’s reputation as an investment- friendly country,” Mr. Fla- herty said. The budget is thin on cost- ly new promises. Instead it rides the coat-tails of last year’s big-spending budget and its pledge to roll out bil- lions of dollars in recession- busting measures this year. The budget is built on the theme of “jobs and growth” and what little new spend- ing there is -– just $1.1 billion –- is earmarked for research and development, skills training and spurring busi- ness growth. But even as that spending hits the economy, the gov- ernment is looking ahead to the days when it can turn off the taps. Starting this year, the government says it will freeze the total amount spent on government sala- ries and administration. The government has warned departments that the cost of this year’s prom- ised 1.5-per cent salary hike for bureaucrats –- worth about $300 million —- will have to be found elsewhere in their departmental bud- gets. And the budget makes clear that the public service could be in the crosshairs of further belt-tightening, warning that it intends to examine “all compensation costs, including benefits.” Public servants are already worried their pensions could be the target of Conservative cuts. Not even the defence department, which has benefitted from new fund- ing from the Conservatives, is exempt, although it fares better than most. The mil- itary’s $18 billion budget will be curbed though that still means a $525-million reduction starting in 2012, once the Afghanistan mis- sion is over, rising to $1 bil- lion a year the next year. As well, the government will freeze foreign aid spend- ing, after a boost in this bud- get to take spending to a “record level” of $5 billion a year. The restraint plan will pro- duce savings of $17.6 bil- lion over five years, Mr. Fla- herty predicts. That, coupled with the end of the stimulus spending, will mean the def- icit will drop from $53.8 bil- lion this year to $27.6 billion by 2011-12 and $1.8 billion by 2014-15. He told report- ers the government will slash spending even more if need be to balance the books by 2015. But Mr. Flaherty’s deficit strategy relies heavily on the assumption of strong eco- nomic growth over the next five years. BY CHRIS HALL AND JEFF HAYWARD chall@durhamregion.com SCUGOG -- Durham police are releasing few details in con- nection with a double-shooting in Port Perry on Thursday after- noon, saying only that one per- son is dead and no arrests have been made. A second person was also found suffering from a gunshot wound when authorities arrived at 1786 Scugog St. just after 4:30 p.m. March 3. That person is being treated for injuries at a local hos- pital, police add. Police have not divulged any information regarding the vic- tims. Inspector Joe Maiorano con- firmed no arrests had been made in the shootings. “It’s still very early in the inves- tigation and we’re trying to deter- mine exactly what happened,” he said. “I have no information on a suspect.” Such commotion in Port Perry did not go unnoticed -- as did the fact that police have remained tight-lipped about any suspects. “It’s a little bit scary. The cops never said they’ve caught any- one yet,” said Alex van den Berg, standing beside a police cruis- er parked on Simcoe Street and watching officers swarm the area. “We don’t know if there’s a killer at large or not.” As others made their way to the scene, some walking their dogs and others parking on side streets, memories of another Scu- gog shooting from 1994 drifted into the thoughts of some. “This is a pretty serious case,” said Mark Sharp, recalling the Bank of Montreal robbery almost 15 years ago that left five people, including three cops, wounded. “I don’t know if they’ve caught the person yet; that’s proba- bly why there’s so many cops around,” said Mr. Sharp, sipping a coffee at the Simcoe Street cor- ner. Across the road from the blue bungalow, with a small crowd gathered in her driveway, Barb Aston recalled little about her neighbours or the day’s events. With the television blaring and a load of laundry washing, Ms. Aston said only the sight of emer- gency vehicles and curious spec- tators outside her home caught her attention. “I was shocked, absolutely shocked,” she said. “It was a pret- ty quiet house.” Ms. Aston knew very little about the residents, saying only that she believed a woman owned the home and that there was a tenant in the basement. “It’s not the loud (neighbours) you have to worry about. It’s the quiet ones,” she said. The shootings, however, have not swayed Ms. Aston’s feelings about Port Perry. “Absolutely not. It can hap- pen anywhere,” she said. “But you always think, we live in Port Perry and it’s not going to happen here.” A small fleet of police cruis- ers converged upon the scene in the late afternoon, rerouting traf- fic around a block of Hwy. 7A that stretched between Simcoe Street and Ella Street. Scugog fire crews also attended the scene and two ambulances left the area just before 5 p.m. Neither emergen- cy vehicle sped away. Moments later, amid the sounds of sirens screaming north on Simcoe Street, a number of unmarked vans screeched to a halt near the scene. Her message of hope, perseverance and passionate commitment resonated with a group of 200 black high school students this week at a conference organized by the Durham District School Board’s Black Educators Network. Ms. Armstrong, who rose to prominence as a choreographer and judge on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, shared her sometimes difficult life story with the stu- dents in a bid to illustrate the good things that can happen when youth choose a path to follow their dreams. She faced physical abuse at home, sub- tle racism in her community and, like most youth, an undefined doubt about the direction her life might take. But she faced those challenges and rose above them because she was committed to her dream and followed the path she chose. Her message, though aimed at young black students in Durham Region, should resonate with youth everywhere. As Ms. Armstrong noted at the conference, colour shouldn’t define people, nor limit their opportunities. Said Ms. Armstrong: “Do not think that because you look black that you cannot go to the Winter Olympics. Don’t think because you’re white you can’t go to the basketball court and dunk us.” The message is a powerful one. And timely too. Durham resident Shelley-Ann Brown, a black woman, just captured a sil- ver medal at the Vancouver Winter Olym- pics as the brake operator in the two- woman bobsleigh. Ms. Armstrong’s message transcends skin colour, culture, and history, rooted as it was in a specific context. This conference is timely and important to create awareness among black youth and their peers. It provides insight into what is possible, what is achievable and the bright future that can lay ahead for those who commit. Perhaps most importantly, the message was conveyed in an environ- ment in which the youth felt comfortable, in words that resonated with them at this time in their young lives. The audience, having heard Ms. Arm- strong’s message, should be inspired to choose their own path. The conference helps build confidence, and provides opportunities for black youth in Durham to find mentors, to listen and respond to the needs of others, and to believe in the possibility of great achievement. Is it maybe a Cooper’s hawk?” I stared at the photos she’d sent, study- ing the eyebrow line and fine streaking on the breast of the raptor perched against her fence. Both field marks help distinguish Coo- per’s hawks from their smaller accipiter cousins, sharp-shins. As does the round- ed tail of one, which is straight-edged on the other. Even so, it’s always a challenge to tell them apart. Thanks to many readers, I’ve had an unprecedented opportunity to polish up my hawk-identifying skills in the past month or two. A flood of pictures and reports suggests this is a great winter for hawks in Dur- ham backyards, everywhere from Wilmot Creek, where Clifford Wells had a sharp- shin, to Blackstock, where John Powell photographed an adult Cooper’s, to north Whitby, where Jacqueline Gormley spot- ted an unidentified accipiter, clearly one or the other. Russ Tucker, Fred Fountain, Roberta Lesser, Heather Rhind, Bob Dees, Helene Way, Joan Taylor, Bonnie O’Carroll, Dave Bell -- I want to thank them all for the valuable lessons on raptor detail I’ve been learning as they sent in their stories. I was especially delighted by a phone message on my answering machine from seven-year-old Thomas Slomiany -- my grandson -- reporting coming home from hockey practice to find a Cooper’s hawk in the driveway. From this informal survey, I would esti- mate about 90 per cent of the hawks dive- bombing feeders in residential Durham Region this winter are Cooper’s hawks, with sharpies at five per cent. There have been one or two credible-sounding reports of the much bigger goshawks as well. Not all accipiters catch enough to eat. I found a sharp-shin lying under our cedar hedge and when I picked it up found it weighed almost nothing. Like other young birds that haven’t learned how to hunt successfully, it must have starved to death. Falcons aren’t as numerous as accipi- ters, but some are around. Melita Verwo- erd sent me a picture of an adult female merlin perched in her yard in southern Oshawa. And Marlene Burnette from north Whitby had a peregrine falcon swoop into view, to the amazement of her whole fam- ily, gathered for dinner. Eagles aren’t apt to appear in people’s yards, of course, but some are wintering in Durham. Steve Greengrass spotted what was like- ly a second-year bald eagle circling over Taunton Road in Clarington; Don Tordiff saw one in Newcastle. Ron Castle saw a soaring adult in Hastings. Chris Sewell spotted an adult bald eagle on the ice in Frenchman’s Bay, Pickering, and sent photos his neighbours, Mel and Mau- reen Metcalfe, took through their spotting scope. She currently opts for the Breakfast Burrito combo if she wants a bite in the morning, or the Mediter- ranean Salad if it’s later in the day. BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Due to a legal battle with York Region, Pickering tax- payers can expect a tax hike of 3.9 per cent. The actual City budget calls for an increase of 2.9 per cent, but the City has tacked on another one per cent to cover an anticipated $420,000 in legal costs to battle York Region over the York-Durham sewage sys- tem. Council in the fall agreed to launch the battle when it felt the City and residents were not prop- erly consulted when York Region decided to put an odour control facility close to the Cherrywood West subdivision to accommodate its expansion. Although York later moved the station to just west of the York-Durham Townline, it was done without consulting Pickering or residents. Although there were some com- ments both for and against the one- per cent increase, Ward 1 Regional Councillor Bonnie Littley pointed out, “We all agreed to go down that road so we’re going to have to pay for it.” The tax increase, which is laid out in the current budget set to total $71 million, was not yet approved as of our print deadline. City treasurer Gil Paterson explained the increase represents an extra $39.42 on the local portion of the bill for an average Pickering home valued at $340,750. The local portion represents 27 per cent of property taxes, with the rest going to the Region of Durham and to the Province for education. The capital budget of $21.1 mil- lion was passed Thursday. Mayor Dave Ryan called the budget “fiscally responsible” and praised the capital budget specifi- cally. “The capital budget includes sev- eral road projects and the contin- ued investment in the safety of its citizens,” he said. Capital projects include the Frenchman’s Bay harbour entrance construction, which will cost $8 million, Amberlea Creek erosion control ($2.7 million) and signifi- cant work on Glenanna Road from Pickering Parkway to Dixie Road ($900,000). All of these were passed by the executive committee Thurs- day. Look for a more detailed story on the budget once both the current and capital budgets are passed. The magnitude-8.8 quake has left devastating effects on the country, with more than a mil- lion homes destroyed and a death toll in the hundreds. “As of right now, there isn’t anything in terms of a response that we’re preparing for but we will be taking donations,” said Terra Sayer, Red Cross disas- ter management coordinator for Durham Region and City of Kawartha Lakes. “Chile has a pretty good emergen- cy team in place so that really would come first.” The region’s relief efforts after Haiti’s catastrophic earthquake in January were tremendous as numerous residents made mon- etary donations to Red Cross. CALL 1-800-418-1111 EMAIL durham_ region@redcross.ca visit www.redcross.ca EARTHQUAKE RELIEF durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 5, 201011 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comEntertainment ART SHOW Experiencing the landscape with Andrew Hamilton Painter showing work in Port Perry to April 9 BY MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Artist Andrew Hamil- ton caught the travel bug when he was 16. “I woke up one day, bought an 18-speed bike and a couple of friends and I decided to go on a cross-country trip across Cana- da,” he recalls. “They bailed, but I had bought the bike and was com- mitted and rode to the Gaspé and back.” He didn’t know how to paint on those early travels, but often came across a scene and won- dered, ‘How do you capture that?’ And there was an inner voice that never left him, directing him to an artistic career. Hamilton heeded the voice and his journey had truly begun. Despite failing high school art as a young man, he went to the Ontario College of Art and Design at age 34. He’s showing his work at the Kent Farndale Gallery in Port Perry from March 6 to April 9. There’s an opening reception at the gallery on March 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. Travel and art continue to go together for Hamilton and he enjoys painting en plain air, out- doors, scenes that are continually changing. “Not just a one-second snapshot of a scene but experiences over eight hours,” he says. “It becomes a story. I like to be there, be on location, rather than (working) from photos.” He found out that the Group of Seven did the same thing and, as he learned more about them, was and continues to be inspired by them. Hamilton was fortu- nate enough to be apprenticed to a giant of Canadian art, Doris McCarthy, whose artistic vision the Canadian masters helped shape. “She learned from Lismer, Mac- Donald, Carmichael when they taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design, so I was able to add a lot of the way they were working.” Hamilton says. There’s a lot of the Group in Hamilton’s works, full of vivid colours. He explains the distinc- tion between a realistic and an impressionistic painter. The for- mer will work from a photo to paint a landscape, with the goal being to copy it truthfully, and it becomes a technical exercise. But an impres- sionist such as himself looks at the same landscape and is driven by the emotional experience of what he or she sees. The goal is not for a faithful reproduction. Hamilton says the impressionist looks at a landscape and “it comes through your eyes to your heart and then to your head.” Thus the green in the actual scene might become a different green in the painting, maybe even an entirely different colour. Hamilton is the executive direc- tor of the Pickering-based Durham West Arts Centre, teaches art pri- vately in Durham and Markham, and for 10 years taught part-time at Durham College in Uxbridge. He lives in Toronto and some of the paintings he’s showing in Port Perry will be of Toronto scenes. But most will be of rural Durham. He discovered the area when he lived in Stouffville for seven years and says it continues to attract him. After all, one doesn’t have to travel far from home to be inspired. “I love Leonardo da Vinci’s quote, ‘If you can’t step out your door and find a painting, you’re not an artist’,” Hamilton says. An appropriate statement considering this is an Olympic year, but in these parts, begin- ning Monday, ‘the games’ are in reference to the OFSAA Quad-A senior boys’ basketball championships, where a couple of Ajax schools should be in the hunt for a provincial medal. In fact, after the rankings for the 16 teams were released Wednesday night, the Pickering Trojans are seeded number one, followed closely behind by the J. Clarke Richardson Storm, who are seeded third. “I guess it adds a little more pressure to us,” said Pickering head coach Mike Gorden- sky. “But, realistically, it’s going to be such a tough tournament that it doesn’t matter if you are seeded one to 13 or 14, you have a legitimate chance to win the tourna- ment.” Pickering enters the tournament as the LOSSA champions after beating J. Clarke 83-74 in the title game. They have also enjoyed considerable success at OFSAA, winning back-to-back gold medals in Toronto two years ago and Ham- ilton the year before that. They also have a pair of bronze medals in the past four years. This is a new experience for J. Clarke coach Mike McFetters, whose team qualified for the provincial championships after winning a play-in game on Monday afternoon, dominating Notre Dame 95-77. With all of their success this season, McFetters expected to garner a high seeding. “I expected to be number two or three, so it’s a reasonable good seed, so I’m not sur- prised,” he said. “It doesn’t add any extra pressure. We’ve created our own pressure. We have goals we set at the beginning of the season. “Looking at the draw though, there are no easy games.” J. Clarke opens against Nantyr Shores (Innisfil), who are seeded 16th, on Monday at 3 p.m. and is one of the only teams that McFetters is unfamiliar with. The three day tournament is being held at the Campus Wellness and Recreation Cen- tre at Oshawa’s Durham College/UOIT campus, with opening games Monday begin- ning at 1 p.m. and continuing through to Wednesday’s gold medal game at 6:30 p.m. Pickering won’t have a cakewalk in their opening game, facing number 12 St. Thomas More of Hamilton on Monday at 5 p.m. The two met early in the season at a tournament in Waterloo, with Pickering coming out on the losing end. Pickering might also be with- out star centre MiKyle McIntosh, who was given a one game suspension after receiving two technical fouls in the LOSSA championship game. Gordensky has appealed the sus- pension and was expecting a decision on Friday afternoon. Once the ball tips off, a lot of things have to go right for a team to win it all, said Gor- densky “It takes a team coming together for three days and not getting too high or too low,” he said from experience. “There are a lot of games in a short time and all of the games are played at a high intensity. The St. Mary Monarchs forward scored a pair of goals, one to tie the game and the other to win it, as the Monarchs registered a 5-4 overtime victory over the Uxbridge Tigers in Game 1 of the senior boys’ LOSSA hockey final at Don Beer Arena in Pickering. Cammisuli tied the game up with just 2:30 remain- ing in the third period, fir- ing a puck low on Uxbridge goalie Dylan French and won it by converting a pass from Michael Walker 1:18 into the extra frame. “I saw Walker going down the wing and thought we could get a two-on-one so I started going hard to the net,” Cammisuli said afterwards, attempting to detail the game clinching tally. “I put my stick on the ice, the puck just land- ed there and it went in.” As short as the over- time period was, it could have ended even earlier as Drake Caggiula had a pair of quality chances within the opening minute that were thwarted by French. Though Cammisuli’s goal forced overtime, the turning point came ear- lier in the period on a Corey Helliwell blast from the top of the circle that seemed to fool French and beat him high glove. “We’ve got great lead- ers on this team and they just kept boosting us up. When Helliwell scored that goal early in the third to make it 4-3, that’s when the momentum picked up and we just took off from there,” Cammisuli said. In order to close the series out today, however, the Monarchs will need to play a much more disci- plined brand of hockey. Penalties got them into some major trouble dur- ing the second period as they went from hold- ing a 2-1 lead on goals from Walker in the first and Tyler Traill early in the second to trailing 4-3 before the period was out.
