The church, recently purchased by the congregation of St. Joseph of Arimathea, is an Orthodox church with services conducted in English. Parishioners have been busy working to ready the building for the first service to be held this weekend. The Whitevale United Church went up for sale in December, 2008, and while the Whitevale community planned to purchase the 125-year-old church, an Orthodox church made a successful offer last sum- mer. The front of both a black pickup truck and a blue SUV were crushed after one vehicle t-boned the other at about 9:48 a.m., said Sergeant Nancy van Rooy of Durham Regional Police. Two people were taken to a local hospi- tal with one person more seriously injured than the other, said Sgt. van Rooy. A number of people called in the accident and an off- duty police officer stopped to offer first aid, she said. “There are a lot of Good Samaritans out there.” Durham police closed the road for investigation, but it was open again by the afternoon. POLICE Two sent to hospital after Ajax accident SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND AJAX -- Emergency crews were on the scene of a collision at the intersection of Lakeridge Road and Taunton Road on Tuesday morning, Jan. 25. AJAX -- Suspicious Rogers employees helped Durham cops nab a man suspected of using false identification to make fraud- ulent cellphone purchases in Ajax. It’s alleged the suspect stole the identities of real Rogers customers to order the phones, then had them delivered to addresses where he’d sign for the shipments. But when Rogers employees caught onto the scam, they called in Durham police, fraud Detective Mark Stone said. “They started putting two and two together and checked into it,” he said. When a shipment of Blackberry devices was delivered to an Ajax address Tuesday, Durham officers watched as a man signed for the phones, then got into his car and drove off with them. The cops stopped the car at West- ney and Kingston roads, seizing the phones. Officers also found the man to be in posses- sion of two more phones, in contravention of a court order. Jermaine Grant, 22, of no fixed address, faces fraud charges. He was also charged under new identity theft legislation, the first such charge laid by Durham police. Markets appear to be stabilizing, building permit numbers are improving and real estate sales are strong. Things seem to be moving in the right direc- tion,” he said to an audience of about 100 at the Oshawa Holiday Inn. The strong Camaro sales shows the auto- motive sector is improving and Mr. Anderson urged General Motors to build more products at its Oshawa facility. “It would be a great decision for General Motors to build their new products here: we have the facilities, the expertise and the quality labour force to make these products a success.” While describing 2009 as “a surprisingly good year for the Region,” he cautioned that “2010 may actually be a more dif- ficult year than 2009.” Unemployment is running at close to 10 per cent and there are more than 9,200 people on social assistance roles in Dur- ham, he said. “Ontario Works is a cost-shared program with the Province. As caseloads rises, the Region’s 20-per cent contribution rep- resents an increasing burden on the regional tax levy,” he stat- ed. While there are challenges, Mr. Anderson pointed to the extension of Hwy. 407 easterly from Brock Road in Pickering as something that is “absolutely vital for the Region. “I intend to drive my GM product from Brock Road to Hwy. 35/115 sometime in 2013,” he said. “Also in the coming term, we should see the extension of GO rail through Oshawa to Bowmanville with new stations along the way. With federal funding to help us develop Durham’s long-term transit network, we will have bus rapid transit along Hwy. 2 with service every 7.5 minutes,” he added. Over the past three years, about $200 million in federal and provincial infrastructure money has flowed into Durham, he noted. “Since much of the money has to be used by March 2011, it represents a rapid injection of funds into our local economy,” Mr. Anderson added. ••• Mr. Anderson will also be speaking to the Clarington Board of Trade on Feb. 18, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Port Darlington Mari- na, 70 Port Darlington Rd., Bowmanville; to the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade on March 23 (location to be determined), and the Whitby Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 7. Durham fraud cops got a tip a suspect was attempting to send rented luxury cars overseas, and were waiting at an Ajax business Friday when the man showed up, trying to rent a Chrysler 300 valued at $40,000. When an officer identified himself the suspect rushed him and struggled before breaking free, police said. The man was busted after a short foot pursuit and a scuffle with a number of officers. Cops recovered a driver’s licence bearing an alias. A second man who drove the suspect to the car rental outlet was arrested without incident and found to be in possession of false ID. She told me she wanted to donate her tips to Haiti. Normally in an average morning shift she will earn anywhere from $10 to $20. She posted a sign sug- gesting her idea. By the end of her shift, she had earned over $100. One by one, each member of the snack bar wanted to join in the cause. By the end of the weekend, the gener- ous hockey parents of Pickering and the out-of-town parents donated a total of $560. Shelagh Lawes, who runs the snack bar, has taken the money to her workplace (Ultramar), which is matching the dona- tion, and also looking into the govern- ment matching as well. All in all $1,680 will have been raised to help towards the Haiti fund. Congratulations to the kids at the snack bar for their wonderful idea and the hockey parents who donated this week- end at Don Beer Hockey Arena. Dyane Taylor Pickering PAY ATTENTION Basic road safety needed for kids To the editor: After all the recent pedestrian versus vehicle deaths in the GTA, I couldn’t believe what I saw on Liverpool Road a few days ago. A Durham transit bus was travelling south, around 4 p.m., making its regu- lar stops, dropping mostly students from local schools. I was right behind this bus and wit- nessed that when it stopped at Patmore Lane, that the six or so teenaged students who got off, walked behind the bus and proceeded to cross Liverpool Road, with- out so much as a glance southbound to see if any traffic was coming north. These students must be under the mis- conception that city buses have red flash- ing lights like school buses. Before one of these carefree students is hurt, or becomes a statistic, a little more traffic safety education should be taught. Paul Seifried Pickering PATRIOTISM Keep Highway of Heroes for troop deaths only To the editor: Re: Crowds gather on Bowmanville bridge to pay respect to RCMP officers, Jan. 23. I find it somewhat uncomfortable seeing the Highway of Heroes being used to hon- our anyone other than our soldiers. I fully understand that the RCMP do dan- gerous and international work, but should they receive the same homecoming as our troops? The only non-military to be hon- oured on the highway were those killed in Afghanistan. I hope this doesn’t start to take away the meaning of the repatriation homecoming displayed on the bridges right now. This is such a sensitive topic that you real- ly don’t want to say too much negative but there has to be a line drawn so the Highway of Heroes true meaning stays alive. No disrespect intended in any form to the RCMP or their families, but it came as a surprise to this reader that the highway was being used in the same manner reserved for our troops. I did go to the Albert Street bridge to hon- our the two fallen officers, but I really hope this is the one and only time this will hap- pen. Support our troops, wear red on Fri- days. Brian Wilkins Oshawa Take the pledge so that you do have the power Contest encourages residents to find ways to save energy Area residents can make a commit- ment to saving energy and win prizes at the same time if they take the “We Have the Power” pledge. Organized locally by Durham Sustain Ability, the group’s goal is to get 1,500 residents on board by Feb. 28. Those who pledge to take action on waste, water, energy or transportation by the end of February will be eligible to win an Energy Star front-loading washer and dryer. Second prize is a residential energy audit, while the third prize is a We Have the Power prize pack. While the prizes are an incentive to take the pledge, the long-term goal is to change energy use to help conserve pre- cious resources. More sustainable living includes leav- ing a much smaller carbon footprint in order to help battle greenhouse gas emissions and make a dent in climate change. A second benefit comes in the form of cost savings. Making small changes such as turn- ing off lights, making sure windows are properly sealed and using Energy Star appliances can add up to big reductions on energy bills. An investment now can pay big divi- dends down the road. While many programs such as recy- cling and waste reduction are driven by top-down government decree, the choic- es we make on a daily basis can have a huge impact in building a more sustain- able culture. In finding ways to use less energy now we can set a good example for future generations and ensure they will have the resources they need. Durham Sustain Ability representatives will be out in force at the Pickering Town Centre this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to help local residents sign up. They’ll answer any questions you might have about “We Have the Power” and will be able to provide energy-saving tips. For more information on how to save energy and on the program, visit www. sustain-ability.ca, e-mail info@sustain- ability.ca or call 905-427-0061. Residents paid 27.7 per cent of their tax bill to the Town of Ajax in 2009, the rest went to the Region of Durham and local school boards for education. The budget details are available online at townofajax.com and as a hard copy at Town Hall. 65 Harwood Ave. S. Residents are invited to a public meeting on the issue on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. “The public meeting portion is really an opportunity for members of the public to give comments to council,” said Rob Ford, Ajax’s director of finance. The proposed property tax hike will add roughly $1.2 million in revenue to the Town. That’s in addition to $1.1 million in assessment growth from new residents and businesses and $1.4 million in addi- tional slots money from the expansion of OLG Slots at Ajax Downs. The Town already receives $5 million annually from OLG and the money is used for grants -- including $62,500 annually to the Rouge Valley Health Systems Founda- tion and more than $100,000 annually to the United Way -- and to reduce the cost of borrowing for large capital projects by pay- ing a larger portion of costs upfront. There will be modest growth in services for 2010, including more frequent grass mowing and recycling bins in the Town’s parks. The rest of the additional revenue will be used to maintain service levels. The Town is also planning on hiring nine additional staff members in 2010. “Although the economy has slowed, we’re still a very fast growing municipality that requires the addition of staff to main- tain services,” said Mr. Ford. Though down from previous years, Ajax had the highest assessment growth in Dur- ham in 2009. “Which means we have more roads to plow, more grass to mow, more sports fields to maintain,” said Mr. Ford. The meeting kicks off at 7 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall. “We’re very flexible, we don’t require any- one to preregister with the clerk’s office,” said Mr. Ford. “People can just come that night and participate if they wish.” Those who can’t make it, can send e-mail comments to finance@townofajax.com or leave customer feedback on the Town’s website. They can also drop a letter off at Town Hall. Council will approve the final version of the budget on Feb. 8. AP Details on new initiative still to be worked out BY KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- The sites are known, now Durham Catholic District School Board officials are working on the details of all- day kindergarten. The program, formally called Early Learning Program, is set to start this coming September at five schools in Durham. There’s “information that still needs to be clarified. It’s definitely a work in progress,” Ryan Putnam, superintendent of business, told trustees on Monday. There are five different schools, “one from each of our major communities. We were allocated 13 classes.” Classes will be at Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School in Oshawa, St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School in Whitby, St. Bernadette Catholic School in Ajax, Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Pickering and Immaculate Concep- tion Catholic School in Port Perry. It’s going to take six years to roll out the program fully, Mr. Putnam said. “It will have a very positive impact on the system, especially in September.” An extended day program is also in the works, providing morning and afternoon daycare, he said. “It will be available to four- and five- year-olds in the program. We may con- sider it for six- and seven-year-olds if space is available.” The extended program will operate on a “cost recovery basis, with a user fee approach,” Mr. Putnam said. Fees would be for operating costs, he added. Also, transportation would be the responsibility of parents. Issues that still need to be addressed include staffing, what facilities are need- ed and how to collect fees, Mr. Putnam said. “We need to integrate our services with the Regional daycare program,” Mr. Put- nam stated. “The Region has offered to share their expertise. We’re not in the business of daycare.” EDUCATION Durham Catholic board gets update on all-day kindergarten durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 28, 201010 P Announcement The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) is pleased to an- nounce that Durham Re- gion businessman Bryan Yetman, CIP, CRM has been elected as IBAO’s 67th President. Mr Yetman was offi cially inducted at the recent IBAO Convention held at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, and formally assumed his role as President on January 1, 2010. In High School, with an interest in business, Bryan made the decision to work towards joining the fam- ily brokerage, Brown Pineo Insurance & Financial Brokers Ltd in Pickering. He was accepted into a commerce program at Carleton University in 1994 and moved to Ottawa. A few years into his studies at Carleton, knowing that a career in insurance was in his future, he made the diffi cult decision to switch from Carleton to a business insurance program at Algonquin College where he graduated in 1998. After graduation, Bryan worked briefl y within the family brokerage just long enough to establish the computer network between their two locations at which point he joined the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO). At FSCO Bryan served as an ombudsman offi cer where he dealt with consumer complaints and tried to bring resolution to disputes. As the market began to harden in 2001, Bryan returned to the family brokerage now named First Durham Insurance. First Durham Insurance cur- rently has a staff of over 30. Obtaining his Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation in 2000 and his Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation in 2002, Bryan worked in all areas of the brokerage and became First Durham’s Vice President and a shareholder last year. After becoming involved with the Board and Execu- tive of the Durham Insurance Brokers Association where he served as a Territory Leader for the Young Brokers Council, Bryan made a decision to join the Board of IBAO in 2005 and then moved onto its Executive in 2007. Since joining IBAO, Bryan has chaired a number of committees including the Young Brokers Council, the Members and Education Group of committees, the Group Plans Committee and acted as IBAO’s Admin & Finance Chair. Bryan also sits on FSCO’s Rates and Rules Technical Advisory Committee and Facility Association’s Ontario Operating Commit- tee. “We are thrilled to announce Bryan’s appointment as President to IBAO’s board,” said IBAO CEO Randy Carroll. “His energy, enthusiasm and dedica- tion are qualities that he exhibits in his personal life and in business. He is not only fully dedicated to the insurance industry but to his clients and community at large.” Bryan Yetman currently resides with his wife Sharon and their 3 children in Whitby. In his spare time, Bryan can often be found with his family, and when the opportunity presents itself, casting a line in one of the many lakes in southern Ontario. Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario Elects New President The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) is a not for profi t association that represents and serves the interests of over 10,800 independent Property & Casualty Insurance Brokers in the Province of Ontario. Next to government, the Salvation Army is the second largest provider of social services in Canada. Locally, food and clothing, counselling and support groups, money management, camp sponsorships and advocacy programmes are offered, to name only a few. This past Christmas, requests for our help to local families increased by 30%. But while our help to others is rooted in the spirit of Christmas, it exists all year through...just like the timeless message of Christmas. Because of your support, we are ready to respond when our neighbours in Pickering and Ajax need help. This notice is to publicly thank the people of Ajax and Pickering for their wonderfully generous support of our recent Christmas campaign. Through your kindness and in diffi cult times, we ended our campaign 20% higher than last year, raising $221,211 which will be used to further our assistance locally. We thank those who donated toys to CTV’s Toy Mountain through our local Fire and Police Services and individually, and for all those who gave food items to ensure no-one went without. With gratitude we recognize the signifi cant help of Ajax Lionesses, Best Buy, Durham Radio, National Home Services, Ontario Power Generation, Purdue Pharma, Royal Canadian Legion, Pickering and Ajax Rotary Clubs and Volkwagen Canada. We thank local businesses, hockey teams, high schools, public and separate schools, Montessori school, musicians and local churches for their great help. We particularly thank the local merchants listed below for their tremendous partnership and assistance throughout: Thank You one and all for your exceptional kindness which enables us to help those in need throughout 2010. Families started leaving the village and within the next five or six years, only 25 remained. Due to low occupancy, the church became part of a three-point charge with two other United churches. In 2004, the three churches amalgamated into one, Heritage United, and services were eventually discontinued in Whitevale. To keep it in use, resident and White- vale United Church youth leader Ann E. Ward and others used it for youth pro- grams, concerts and fundraisers. “The facility has almost perfect acous- tics,” she said. Once word got out that the church was for sale, a group called Save Whitevale United Church was formed and planned strategies and fundraisers to buy it. Even Pickering council offered a $20,000 grant upon the community’s successful pur- chase. But it became official in November that the St. Joseph of Arimathea Ortho- dox Church had purchased the building for $780,000. St. Joseph’s is an all-English Orthodox parish that serves people of many dif- ferent ethnicities, with a congregation of about 200 people. It has been running out of North York and the congregation will celebrate in Whitevale this year as the parish marks its 25th anniversary. Michael Plomaritis, realtor and St. Joseph’s member, was thrilled to tell the congregation when he came across the “gem. “I’d say I’ve been passively looking for years,” he said in an interview at his con- gregation’s new church. The beautiful building, large space and central location, since church members live all over the Greater Toronto Area, were selling points. In December, small items from White- vale United such as toys, hymnals, piec- es of china and kitchen items were sold in a contents sale and larger items like pews, couches, tables and pianos were auctioned off. The Orthodox church removed the centre pews, but kept the ones on the side for resting purposes. “It’s tradition in the Orthodox church that we stand when we pray,” said Father Sergius Pellegrini, the parish’s rector. The church will remain mostly as is on the outside, said Father Sergius. While much of the work is complete, there’s still more cosmetic work to do on the inside to make it resemble traditional Orthodox churches. The City has approved plans for inte- rior changes such as the stage demoli- tion, plumbing and electrical work. If St. Joseph’s plans exterior renovations to the church, it would have to go through the Heritage Advisory Committee and apply for a Heritage District Permit. “Right now all we know is interior alterations,” said Tim Moore, Pickering’s chief building official. Father Sergius is aware of the commu- nity’s strong tie to the church, but he’s been pleased with the welcoming atmo- sphere. “The neighbours have been wonderful to us,” he said. “The first day we did an outdoor cleanup, the neighbours came out and helped.” And the doors will remain open to the public, Orthodox or not. “In Orthodoxy, hospitality is impor- tant so everyone’s always invited,” said Father Sergius. Vella lifted a backhand over the right pad of Boston College goaltender Corinne Boyles at the 11:36 mark of the third period to help improve Providence to 12-7-8 on the season. The win helped move Providence into first place in Hockey East, and extended the team’s winning streak to seven games, the longest winning streak since the team went 10-0 to close out the 2002-03 season. Vella, a freshman, has 4-4-8 point totals in 13 games with the Friars this season. The 18-year-old is a graduate of St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, and played her minor hockey with the Pickering Panthers and Durham West Jr. Lightning. She is a biology major at Provi- dence. VOLLEYBALL Doris sets new career mark for Durham College OSHAWA -- The legacy of Mandi Doris continues to grow at Durham Col- lege. The fifth-year volleyball player from Ajax made history last weekend, becoming the all-time leader in kills in Lords women’s volleyball history with 421. Her mark passed the previous top total of Erin Smith, who had 417. Durham’s captain set the new mark Sunday, but the Lords came out on the wrong end of a five-set marathon against the Cambrian Golden Shield, 3-2 with set scores of 25-19, 28-26, 23- 25, 12-25 and 13-15. Heading into the match, Durham had won seven straight games and 21 consecutive sets. Doris, meanwhile, in addition to becoming the new block leader, moved into fourth spot on the Ontario College Athletic Association’s all-time scoring list with 706, passing RMC’s Claire Bramma, who had 705. Durham, now 12-2, sit tied at the top of the regional standings with Cam- brian (12-3) and Trent (12-3), who the Lords will head to Peterborough and face Wednesday night. In other weekend action the Lords defeated the Boreal Viperes 3-0. HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY St. Mary leading the way as playoffs loom BY BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Pickering’s St. Mary Monarchs may be the class of LOSSA boys’ hockey this season, but they’re not the only team that has a good shot at going to OFSAA when all is said and done. In fact, thanks to St. Mary’s impressive fourth- place finish a year ago at the provincial AAA/ AAAA championship tournament, the local LOSSA loop will get to send two teams to St. Catharines for this year’s tournament, which runs March 23 to 26. With the league in the midst of a two-week hia- tus for exams, the stretch run for the playoffs will begin next week. Chris Ordanis, head coach of Whitby’s Ander- son Raiders and one of three league conveners, says St. Mary is definitely the cream of the crop, but adds the Durham league is as strong as it’s ever been. “You’ve got St. Mary, which is consistent- ly atop their division, but there’s probably five or six teams I think that have enough to give them some really strong competition,” he says. “There’s some good balance. We’ve got so many good hockey players I think our region always holds its own when it comes to competing out- side too, at tournaments.” The Monarchs, who recently won the St. Peter’s Classic in Peterborough and are ranked No. 1 in the GTA by the Toronto Star, are leading the way in the Don French Division with an 8-0- 0 record. But, a good battle is raging for the other three playoff spots. Holy Trinity (5-1-2) and Uxbridge (5-2-2) are tied in second with 12 points, fol- lowed by Austin (5-2-1) with 11 and Dwyer (4-2- 2) with 10. Eastdale (3-4-1), Bowmanville (3-6-1) and O’Neill (2-4-2) will have to pick up the pace if they hope to contend. The Derrick Moore Division is even tighter, as Pickering (8-2-0) is in front with 16 points fol- lowed by Ajax (7-2-0) with 14, Anderson (6-1- 1) with 13, All Saints (6-4-0) with 12 and Henry Street (3-2-4) with 10. Longshots are McLaugh- lin (3-5-2), Dunbarton (3-5-1), Notre Dame (2-6- 1) and Maxwell Heights (2-8-0). “We wanted to have only four (playoff teams per division) to make the league games that much more important,” Ordanis explains. “There’s going to be a couple of good teams that might not make the playoffs this year.” SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND Looking for two AJAX -- Sanjeet Singh, from Lincoln Alexander Public School in Ajax, jumped for a shot on net against Earnscliffe Sr Public School from Brampton, during a preliminary game in the 6th Annual Ajax Invitational Boys’ Basketball Showcase Tournament for elementary schools at Ajax High School. Lincoln Alexander finished preliminary play with a record of one win and two losses, including a 52-40 setback in this game. They did manage to advance to the consolation final, beating Lincoln Avenue from Ajax 47-41. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 28, 201012 AP Durham 14U team wins McGregor Cup OTTAWA -- The Durham Attack 14U boys went on the first road trip of their club volleyball careers, travelling to Ottawa for a tough McGregor Cup tournament against teams from across the province, and they again emerged with the gold medal, their second in two outings. Their gold medal match was watched by the prime minister and his wife Laureen. After the match, Prime Minister Harper took some time to meet the boys and compliment them on their play. The team next plays in Stoufville, where it hopes to keep its perfect record intact.
