Free game nights at Pickering library Ballots to be tallied late Tuesday BY CRYSTAL CRIMI ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Ben Kelly has been on strike three times since joining Durham College staff, but as teachers voted Wednesday for or against another, he had no idea what to expect. In the past, he would have already had his pick- et signs ready to go. But between the poor econ- omy and a younger roster of teachers, the vice president of the Ontario Public Services Employ- ee Union Local 354 was unsure, for the first time in his career, what faculty members would decide. “If it’s a strong strike vote, we hope they go back to the table,” Mr. Kelly said, as teachers from the Whitby campus periodically made their way into the campus staff lounge to vote. By 9:30 a.m., about 30 of the location’s approxi- mate 50 full-time staff had already voted. “It’s in the hands of the faculty now,” said Ken Robb, Durham College’s vice-president of human resources, later that day. Like Mr. Kelly, Mr. Robb found this vote to be “somewhat unpredictable.” If a strike vote is achieved, it could see 300 Dur- ham College faculty walk off the job, a move that would likely come in late February, according to Mr. Kelly. In November, after failed bargaining, colleges exercised a new right to impose a contract, which includes a 1.75-per cent wage increase for each of year one and two, and two per cent for each of years three and four. The two sides are in conflict about a workplace agreement that impacts class sizes and hours worked each week. On one side, many teachers, especially those who have been there longer and know what’s gone into getting what they have, are angry a contract is being imposed. On the other hand, some are saying the colleges’ offer is fair, Mr. Kelly added. “It could go one way or another,” said a teacher of about 20 years who didn’t want to be identi- fied in fear of reprisals. CASLPO, Aud. (C)Audiologist Q. My hearing aids are over 3 years old. My New Year’s resolution is to get new ones. What’s available? A. Hearing aid technology rapidly changes over the years. New for 2010 are: Receiver-in-the-canal (RIC) hearing instruments are new to the market; Small, discreet, measuring less than 1⁄2 of inch. RICs sound “natural” because the ear is left open thereby reducing occlusion, the plugged-up feeling. Rechargeable batteries are now available in today’s high tech hearing aids. Rechargeable batteries result in easier handling, more economical and environmentally friendly. Sweep™ Technology like Apple’s iPod Touch and iPhones is NOW available on hearing aids. Sweeping a fi nger up or down adjusts the volume and memories for quiet or noisy environments. No more buttons or dials with Sweep™ Technology. T2, another new breakthrough technology, allows you to use your cell or touch-tone phone to conveniently switch modes or adjust volume on your hearing aids without using additional hardware. T2 technology is high tech at its best. e2e wireless™ technology facilitates wearing 2 hearing aids with fewer manual adjustments , better speech intelligibility and localization. One touch adjusts both; the two hearing aids “talk” to each other with e2e wireless™ technology. The most common complaint is the annoying whistling, called acoustic feedback. PureWave Feedback Eliminator technology solves the problem. PureWave Feedback Eliminator is proven to be the best feedback management system in the industry! Michael Monckton appears by video in court BY KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- The man accused of murdering a two-year-old Oshawa boy is being verbal- ly abused by both inmates and guards at the Lindsay jail, his lawyer said Wednesday. Michael Monckton, 26, appeared briefly by video in court, after which his lawyer, Gary McNeely, said his client was having a rough time behind bars. “With this kind of charge, he’s a target,” Mr. McNeely said in an interview. “He’s being subjected to verbal abuse. “For somebody who hasn’t ever been in jail, it’s upsetting. The charge is terribly upsetting for everyone. His family is being patient.” During his video appearance, Mr. Monckton was quiet, stating only his name and birth date. His case was adjourned to Wednes- day, Jan. 20, when he will appear in court, again by video. Mr. McNeely said he’s received no disclosure from the Crown on the case, meaning the prosecu- tion has not yet shared all its evi- dence. “I haven’t seen any disclosure. All I know is from talking with a police officer before my client turned himself in,” Mr. McNeely said. Mr. Monckton is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Keagan Davis. The child was found dead in a basement apartment on Southgate Drive by Durham Regional Police offi- cers responding to an emergency call on Jan. 5. An autopsy found the boy died of trauma. As for next week’s court appear- ance, Mr. McNeely wasn’t sure what would happen. “I don’t know if we’ll have disclosure. I can’t do anything until we have disclosure. I can’t ask for bail.” CRIME Oshawa boy’s accused murderer a ‘target’ in jail OSHAWA -- Accused murderer Michael Monckton in above photo with victim Keagan Davis, 2 (photo at right). BREAKING NEWS 24/7 >>newsdurhamregion.com es for the rest of the month to help residents jump-start a year filled with physical and emotional well-being. Ms. Harrison said staff at the rec complex doesn’t only focus on physical health, but also mental and emotional health. “You’re a whole person,” she said. “You’re not just the rack that your clothes fit on.” Fitness instructor Caroline Farag agreed. “We tell people all the time that fitness comes in all shapes and sizes,” she said. They believe this mind-set makes way for successful results. For example, people who simply go to the gym just to get tight abs or tone their biceps and overdo it, often drop off. “People won’t stick around if it’s just physi- cal,” she said. “Find something you like.” This will result in keeping with a regular exercise program and getting healthy without all of the usual, often superficial, pressures. “There’s really no intimidation here because everyone has a reason for being here,” she said. Some young people enjoy the modern facilities, much as they would with an upscale gym, while others may even socialize as much as they exercise. Ms. Harrison finds many will come to the gym, work out for 15 minutes, then chat with their friends. But it all contrib- utes to the goal of getting healthy. “Sweat every day,” she said, adding whether it’s for 10 minutes or one hour, it’s still physi- cal activity. And fitness instructors are glad to help, said Tanya Ryce, the City’s marketing/promotions graphic designer. “They’re here all the time,” she said. “They’re not paid extra for the time they give you. It’s part of their job.” Since it underwent a huge redevelopment in the fall, with three new fitness studios and two doubles squash courts, the rec complex offers programs for everyone from kids to seniors. “They’re coming out because they’re fun classes,” said Ms. Farag. One of the popular classes she teaches is Osteo Fit, where weight and resistance exer- cise are used in a gentle manner, ensuring participants maintain and possibly increase bone mass. “We usually get about 40 in that class,” she said. When Ms. Harrison started working at the rec complex two years ago, she noticed most clients were 40 years and older. “Over 50 per cent are now 40 or younger,” said Ms. Ryce. Ms. Harrison said she’d like to keep it bal- anced, but is glad to see young people inter- ested in getting fit too. And there are the regulars who continue to come back year after year. “We have more than 100 25-year members,” said Ms. Ryce. The Pickering Recreation Complex has 4,000 members, 40 staff members and offers almost 100 programs. Memberships are offered in a variety of packages and drop-in rates are available, too. Current deals include: Purchase 12 months of any membership up until Jan. 17 (excluding swim), and receive two additional months. There are also incentives for businesses to try out a week for free and get discounts through- out the year. All residents (including non- members) can also participate in three free nutrition workshops, which will take place on Jan. 15, 22 and 25. All content copyright Editorial Opinions FEDERAL POLITICS MP slams idea of Olympic break for Parliamentarians To the editor: Re: PM’s decision made sense given timing of Olympics, editorial, Jan. 6. Your editorial suggests this prorogation is acceptable, normal and ultimately “makes sense.” You are wrong on all three counts. There is no precedent to suggest Parliament be shut down during the Olympics. Of the two-week 1988 Calgary Olympics, the House sat for one week. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was able to attend the Games for the first week and attend the closing ceremonies -- all without skirting his obligation to remain accountable to the House of Commons. The rest of Canada will be expected to show up to work and do their job during the Olym- pics. To suggest the work of Parliamentarians is meaningless, as your editorial has, is totally unfair. With Parliament operating, MPs could have continued to debate over 30 different government bills, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s much-vaunted crime and consumer protection legislation. These bills have been at the centre of his agenda for the last year. Prorogation stopped this agenda in its tracks. Canadians elect and pay MPs to represent them in Ottawa. It is a job I respect and value. However, by March 3, Canadians will have spent over $50 million to operate a Parlia- ment that is effectively padlocked shut. Democracy can be messy and uncomfort- able, but as Churchill said, it is better than the alternatives. The prime minister has a duty to attend the House and be accountable for the actions of the government. By shutting down Parlia- ment just before New Year’s Eve, Mr. Harp- er is gambling Canadians won’t notice, but they have. Canadians demand any politi- cian worth their salt won’t take a break for the Olympics and will continue the important business of the people. Dan McTeague, MP Pickering-Scarborough East Can’t our MPs walk and chew gum at same time? To the editor: Re: PM’s decision made sense given timing of Olympics, editorial, Jan. 6. I kept looking for the punchline in your editorial stating that Parliament should take a break, should prorogue so all MPs “worth their salt” can watch the Olympics. You’ve got to be kidding. Are the rest of Canadians leav- ing their jobs to watch the Games? Here’s how the London Economist describes it: “Cana- dian ministers, it seems, are a bunch of Ger- ald Fords. Like the American president, who could not walk and chew gum at the same time, they cannot, apparently, cope with Par- liament’s deliberations while dealing with the country’s economic troubles and the chal- lenge of hosting the Winter Olympic games.” It’s getting more and more embarrassing to be Canadian. Mary Delaney Pickering Can I fire politicians who don’t show up for work? To the editor: Before now I had never heard of prorogu- ing Parliament, but since we are in such competitive economic times, I would like to know one thing. Our politicians are considered employees of the taxpayer, so am I allowed to fire the ones who don’t show up to work for more than three days without a doctor’s note? There are a lot of people standing in the unemployment line right now who would kill for a politician’s paycheque. People who would give 10 times better results and only take two weeks of holidays a year. Todd Nesbitt Clarington Music man’s goal helps community, young people Light of Dae studio needs support to keep doing good deeds As a long-time veteran of the music business, Gerard Doyle has seen it all. After creating sound systems for the likes of Rush, Prince and Blue Rodeo, the owner of Pickering’s Doyle Audio Engi- neering has started an innovative pro- gram to get kids volunteering and play- ing the music they love. Through his creation of Light of Dae Studios, Mr. Doyle is making a deal with local young people: take the time to vol- unteer, record the good deed for use on YouTube and, in return, get studio time to record a song. But Mr. Doyle can’t do it all by himself. In order to keep the project running, he’ll need community support. So far, the Pickering and Ajax Rota- ry clubs have chipped in and, just this week, Ontario Power Generation donat- ed $1,000 to the cause. Mr. Doyle’s motivation is simple: he believes there is too much promotion of drugs, gangs and weapons in the popular music of today and also feels kids are too often told to say “no” to something. He feels his idea is a positive way for them to contribute to the community and get something they love in return. It’s a smart concept that takes the carrot rather than the stick approach in dealing with young people. To offer positive reinforcement for help- ing out in the community only serves to build a healthy experience that in turn translates into a creative payoff in the studio. It’s a great deal that helps everyone involved. So far, young people who have taken up Mr. Doyle’s offer have helped out at food banks, played music at retire- ment homes and cleaned up a park. But there are an endless number of vol- unteer opportunities available. And every time a young person is out there volunteering, he or she is setting a positive example and contributing to the community. Mr. Doyle has some volunteer help of his own at Light of Dae. Until the recent OPG donation, he’d been funding the program out of his own pocket. He can use more help, in terms of vol- unteers and money. Light of Dae program encourages youth to volunteer BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Gerard Doyle has been build- ing sound systems for world-famous musi- cians since 1981 and wants to give back to the industry that’s helped him over the years. And lately, he’s been troubled by the music industry, feeling much of the music these days promotes drugs, gangs and weapons, for example, and may steer youth in the wrong direction. “What we are trying to do is swing the pen- dulum in the other direction,” he said in the shop where he has created sound systems for artists such as Rush, Blue Rodeo and Prince. Kids are always told to say “no” to drugs and gangs, he said, but it’s time to say “yes” to something. So, Mr. Doyle, owner of Doyle Audio Engineering, created Light of Dae Stu- dios in order to say “yes” to music. “The idea is to get youth to see that by doing something good they can also be successful in music,” he said. Youth who are interested in making use of the program can volunteer in any way they choose and record it on video. The video then goes onto YouTube to show others that vol- unteering is a “cool” thing to do. In return, they get a recording session at the studio for as much time as it takes to create a recording they’re happy with. And there’s no minimum hours of volunteering the kids have to meet. Mr. Doyle’s answer when they ask that ques- tion is simple: “Go out and do something and feel good about it,” he tells them. Kids who have taken Mr. Doyle up on the offer have helped out with local food banks, played music at retirement homes or cleaned up a park, for example. “This is the spirit of music and the spirit of community,” he said. Mr. Doyle has started going out into the community to let other organizations know about his project in order to keep it running. Until others started getting on board, it was funded solely by him. A number of sponsors have helped him with tools and equipment needed to build the studio. And recently, he’s received donations from the Pickering and Ajax Rotary clubs, and this week, Don Terry, Ontario Power Generation’s manager of pub- lic affairs, dropped by the studio with a $1,000 donation from the company. “What attracted me was the fact that he was helping young people further their passion for music and at the same time engage them in the community,” he said, adding he’d first heard of Light of Dae at a leadership event. Mr. Doyle is accepting volunteers to help in various aspects around the studio and is spe- cifically looking for a manager. This will not only help the studio continue to run, he said, but gives the volunteers a feeling of purpose. Volunteer Frank Balatoni, the studio’s head engineer, has been helping around the stu- dio since September and said Light of Dae wants to give youth a great first experience in a recording studio. “It’s basically like a step- ping stone,” he said. “It’s a good way to get your foot in the door.” For more information: CALL 905-839-9998 EMAIL info@lightofdae.com VISIT www.lightofdae.com Page 6 - Today’s editorial COMMUNITY Pickering music studio offers kids an alternative newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 14, 20109 AP newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 14, 201010 AP Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.com Ajax sledge hockey player named to Paralympic team BY BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Most Olympians from this country will relate a story of how as youngsters, glued to the television watching their favourite sport, they became inspired watching the gold medal-win- ning performance of an athlete representing Canada. The drama, the medal presentation on the podium, the Canadian pride and the singing of the anthem that followed served as an inspi- ration. It’s at that moment the young prodigies declare that they too are going to the Olympics some day. Jeremy Booker doesn’t have a story that fol- lows the usual script. The Ajax resident has spina bifida, a disabili- ty resulting from a hole in his spine at birth. The condition prevents the nerves and muscles in his legs from functioning properly and, in some cases, from working at all. It has resulted in him being confined to a wheelchair his whole life. But it didn’t deter him from having a passion for hockey as a youngster, joining the Whitby Steelhawks sledge hockey team in 1998, eventu- ally named an MVP for his play during the 2001- 02 season when he was 15. It was during a team outing with the Steelhawks that his Olympic dream was born. “It was never really a goal for me to make the Paralympic team until I started playing sledge hockey for a house league team in Whitby,” says the 23-year-old in picking up the story that served as his inspiration. “I went to a tournament quite a few years ago and the national team was there and were doing a demonstration game. So I got a chance to meet some of the players and I asked for an autograph from some of the players and one of the autographs, the player was an older player, so he wrote on his autograph: Jeremy, take my place. “So at that time I thought hey, this is some- thing I definitely want to give a try and see if I can get to that level.” The perseverance he had to exhibit to over- come his disability was extended to the ice. He was invited to a tryout camp for the national team two years after that encounter, but didn’t make the team. A year later, at a similar camp, he made the team and has been a member of Canada’s sledge hockey team since 2002. He has represented the country at a number of international tournaments and, yes, pulled on the Canadian maple leaf as a member of the team at the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino, helping Canada to the gold medal after beating Norway in the championship game. In Vancouver in March, he will get the oppor- tunity to wear Canada’s colours again after being named to the sledge hockey team that will rep- resent the country at the Paralympics. A camp held in Saskatoon during the same time as the World Junior Hockey Champion- ships served as the backdrop for his inclusion. “It was definitely a sigh of relief for me,” he says of being named to the team. “It’s been a couple of stressful months not really knowing for sure if I had a spot on the team or not. It was definitely a good feeling.” Booker is in Vancouver this weekend for prac- tices and a series of exhibition games against South Korea in preparation for the Paralympics. When the Games begin March 12, he expects the challenge for a gold medal to come from the United States, noting a repeat for Canada will be “no walk in the park.” Gold medals don’t come easy, a reality that Booker has faced his whole life. RYAN PFEIFFER / METROLAND AJAX -- Jeremy Booker, 23, has been playing with the national Paralympic sledge hockey team since the 2002-03 season. After winning a gold medal with the team in Torino in 2006, he is hoping for another gold in Vancouver this year. Booker back for more BASKETBALL Top Shelf off to good start in 2010 AJAX -- In Ajax Men’s Basketball action recently, the Top Shelf Sport Bar started the new year on the right foot with a 50-45 win over Michael’s Eatery. After what many deemed to be an upset win, captain Bob Murray stated his team is finally starting to gel and is the team to look out for this year. Rob Hare led the Shelf with 20 points, Gregg McGuire had 9 and Murray added 8. John Esposito led Michaels with 12 while Roy Bailey contributed 7. ESN knocked off North Alliance Press 37-29 placing the two teams in a tie for first place. ESN played a strong defensive game led by captain Doug Coles who shut down the league’s top scorer. Sherwin James scored 14 points for the winners. Mickey Dill and Nick Sid- eris added 7 each. Newcomer Clairmout Burgess led NAP with 8, captain John Beyaz chipped in 6. In the final game Phillips, Hager and North won a close game from the start 39-33 over Dickson’s Printing. Ian Harvey led the way with 10 points, Roger Young and Orin Taylor had 7 and 6 respectively. Bruce Atwood scored 8, Tim Lane and Phil Guthrie had 7 each for Dicksons which almost scored their first win of the season. HOCKEY Pickering’s Wakefield wins gold with Canada GERMANY -- For the seventh time in eight years, Canada’s National Wom- en’s U22 team won the gold medal at the MLP Cup, defeating Switzerland 9-0 in Saturday’s gold medal game at Eis- sporthalle Ravensburg. Pickering’s Jennifer Wakefield was one of the goal scorers in Saturday’s final. Wakefield’s goal was an unas- sisted marker with 1:09 remaining in the second period, and it stood as Canada’s final goal. Canada led 5-0 after the first period and outshot the Swiss 21-2 in that span and 47-15 all told. Team Canada, in addition to Wake- field, had two others from Durham Region on the roster in Newcastle’s Tara Watchorn and Port Perry’s Britni Smith. In reaching the final, Canada avenged last year’s loss to Sweden in the final by ousting their counterpart 4-3 in overtime of the semifinal. Earlier in the tournament, Canada posted wins of 7-0 over Germany and 4-1 over Switzerland. Wakefield and Watchorn each drew assists in the win over Germany.
