It happened at around 1 p.m. on Jan. 1 at the annu- al polar bear swim held at Paradise Park in Ajax. The event raised money for the Durham Regional Can- cer Centre. For the roughly 50 people participating, the expe- rience was a quick one. “We hit the water right away and everyone turns and runs out ... that water is cold,” said organizer and Ajax resident Bob Murray. About 80 to 100 people cheered the polar bears on from the shore and overall the group raised more than $2,100, said co-organizer Peter Gos. It was a great turnout for a chilly day. “It was just about zero degrees, the water, however, was colder than the air,” said Peter Gos, his co-orga- nizer. That didn’t stop some, including Ajax resident Eric Novak, from hitting the water multiple times. This was the first year for Mr. Novak, who jumped in wear- ing a Hawaiian shirt and a red maple leaf hat. In the meantime, letters have been sent to every one of the 83,524 people who attended any health department flu vaccination clinics from Oct. 23 to Dec. 15, 2009. Oshawa resident Petrina Knight received a letter and “I wasn’t too impressed with it. “I’m not sure what I’m irritated about, the lost key or they had a policy that wasn’t fol- lowed. I wasn’t told if the person was fired,” Ms. Knight said, adding she called the Region after receiving the letter. “My privacy was breached and all they’re going to do is a little review. The whole thing irritated me.” The letter notes Regional policy wasn’t fol- lowed and a review is being done. “What’s the point of a review” if they already know the policy wasn’t adhered to, Ms. Knight said. Letters were sent to Ms. Knight and her 15-month-old daughter. The letter instructs people to go to the Region’s website for information on how to protect health information. “Don’t go to a flu clinic run by Durham Region,” Ms. Knight said. “They look like idi- ots.” She and her daughter had the H1N1 shot at a clinic in Bowmanville. The information on the key includes the person’s name, address, phone number, date of birth, health card number, name of their primary physician and personal health infor- mation provided when they got the vaccina- tion. The key was lost in mid-December some- where at the Durham Region headquarters, at the corner of Rossland Road and Gar- den Street in Whitby. Health depart- ment officials don’t believe it was deliberately taken. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long- Term Care and the Information and Privacy Commissioner have both been contacted about the situation. The letter, signed by Dr. Robert Kyle, the Region’s medical officer of health, notes, “The ability to read the personal health infor- mation on the device is limited. An individ- ual who attempts to access this information would have to know what they are looking for and how to find the information, in order to access your personal health information.” The letter acknowledges Regional policies and procedures weren’t followed. “On behalf of the Durham Region Health Department, I wish to express my sincere regrets for this breach.” The cost to mail out letters to each person was $44,808.62 and the money is coming out of the health department budget, department spokeswoman Glendene Collins said. People can replace their health card at no cost, said Andrew Morrison, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health. “The risk of misuse is quite low. Basically, you need the card to get medical attention,” he stated. Career Exploration Employment Preparation For Durham Region Residents Learn what you’re good at. Target a suitable career! He urges people to monitor their credit history. “Any bills in the mail that have an account somewhere they didn’t sign up for, follow up and don’t think it’s an error,” he states. “Some significant information is missing,” he notes, pointing to driver’s licence number and social insurance number. “If someone wanted to create a false ID, it would be difficult to do. The duo of Durham College computer stu- dents is heading to San Jose this weekend after placing second in the North America Cisco Networking Academy Netriders Skills Challenge. Their prize is a trip to the compa- ny’s headquarters in California. “All of our professors are pretty under- standing (of the time off),” said Mr. Machnik, a 25-year-old Ajax resident and third-year student in the college’s computer systems technology program. His entire class entered the competition on their professor’s recommendation. “So we entered it not really having any expectations,” Mr. Machnik said. “We kind of entered it as a joke, not expecting to do well.” Being successful at the regional qualifier, they took first place at the national competi- tion held at Cisco’s Toronto offices. After finishing the final test, Mr. Mach- nik didn’t exactly feel confident, having not done as well on it as on the previous two, he said. They ended up placing second for all of North America, with the Community College of Rhode Island team coming in first. The competition included a series of multi- ple choice questions, accompanied by a sim- ulation assignment which involved build- ing three different computer networks, Mr. Machnik said. “Going into it we did feel a little out of our league,” he said, adding it’s based on the pro- gram’s curriculum, they knew if they studied really hard they’d do well. For their grand prize, they’ll be taking an educational trip Jan. 10, returning Jan. 16, which will include job shadowing, visiting the Google campus and doing some sight- seeing. “I feel like it’s probably going to open up a few doors for us,” Mr. Machnik said. They’ll take their resumes and profile so they can network, he added. “If it turns into some kind of job, that will be the better aspect for me,” Mr. Machnik said. Ranking second in the competition will benefit them no matter where they apply for a job because it speaks to the level of exper- tise needed to do well and is a well-known competition, he said. “It’s only half the battle though,” Mr. Mach- nik added. He encouraged anyone with the opportu- nity to partake in the competition. “Whatever level of knowledge you think you have ... you really have nothing to lose,” Mr. Machnik said. The competition is free to enter. Mr. Mach- nik and Mr. Cowie received a certificate just for passing the first round, which can be added to portfolios, he said. Weddings • Banquet Facility • Golf • Photography Settings BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- When it comes to solving crimes, Durham police are among the best in Canada, according to a report released recently by Statistics Canada. The institution issued the report last week, Police Resources in Canada 2009, that included a comparison of clearance rates, which is a measure of solved crimes, among police services across Canada. In communities with a population of 100,000 or more, Durham had the second best crime clearance rate in Canada with a weighted rate of 45.5, just slightly behind Codiac Regional RCMP in New Brunswick which scored a 46. The national average was 37.6. Durham Regional Police Service Chief Mike Ewles said he was pleased with the result, crediting the “hard work of the men and women of the service.” The scores were not a percentage, but a weighted score that factored in the sever- ity of crimes, said Chief Ewles.“So if a crime for example has a five-year sentence, it gets a heavier weighting than one that gets a three-year sentence so at the end of the day you come out with a very balanced score,” he explained. The result is in line with other indicators, as a percentage Durham’s clearance rate was 46 per cent in 2008, which was tops among Ontario’s largest police forces. The clearance rate for violent crime was 80 per cent. One of the factors in Durham’s high clear- ance rate is its nationally recognized fraud unit, which has delivered incredible results said the chief. “The profits of those are feeding other organized criminal activity, so we’re real- ly seeing some results in the major fraud area,” he said. “As you know our homicide clearance rates are into the 95s (per cent) traditionally across our history of the ser- vice.” The chief is an advocate of intelligent policing with officers conducting crime- trend analysis and working with communi- ty groups. He said the answer isn’t always to throw more cops at a problem. “For example, if we find a family that’s hav- ing issues and we get a call for a domestic response on a Friday night, what we need to be able to do is to gather as much informa- tion as we can and have it be followed up on Monday by someone from social services, by someone with family counselling experi- ence, by the appropriate resources who are there to provide the service to that commu- nity, we’re there to provide that linkage.” Still, the chief says the clearance rate could be higher, especially when it comes to non-violent crimes. Mischief and vandalism, including van- dalism in local parks, are other crimes Chief Ewles encourages the public to keep report- ing so police can identify the trends. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 8, 20105 AP COMPLIMENTARY DETOX WORKSHOP Are you considering a New Year’s cleanse? All content copyright Editorial Opinions MUNICIPAL CONCERNS Public servants should be disciplined for poor performance To the editor: Re: Durham loses health info, Dec. 24. I read that a nurse employed by the Dur- ham health unit managed to lose a com- puter memory device containing the names and personal details of over 83,000 Durham residents who attended H1N1 flu shot clinics. After experiencing the debacle at the Clarington clinic, I am not surprised to hear that they managed to screw things up even further. The employee presumably is a well- trained, competent professional. Well, he/ she certainly didn’t demonstrate it in this instance. Since they have now managed to put our privacy at risk, and possibly subject us to the growing crime of identity theft, this employee should be fired immediately. I would also suggest that the whole health unit should be examined from top to bottom. Then, a few pages further, I read about employees at the OPG Darlington Nuclear Plant spilling radioactive tritium into the environment while performing the rela- tively mundane task of transferring water from one tank to another. Where was the training, competency, responsibility, professionalism and super- vision that one should expect in such a facility? Can these employees be trusted to ade- quately perform more involved and critical jobs? I certainly have my doubts. The health and safety of thousands of Clarington and Durham residents depend on employees doing their jobs right all the time. Clearly these employees and their supervisors didn’t and they should be fired. A slap on the wrist is inadequate. The taxpaying public relies on well-paid public servants to perform duties correctly and professionally. Clearly we are not get- ting our money’s worth. Clayton Morgan Bowmanville FEDERAL POLITICS Prime minister prorogued Parliament to avoid embarrassment To the editor: Re: PM’s decision made sense given tim- ing of Olympics, editorial, Jan. 6. Your recent editorial concerning the proroguing of Parliament could have been a handout from the PMO or the Conservative party. While glossing over the very valid rea- sons for not doing it you suggest the budget and the Olympics are reasons to justify the action. The vast majority of modern day Olym- pics were held without the host nation suspending their legislature. Our government should be equally capable of squeezing in their photo-ops while Parliament continues to function. With regards to the federal budget, if the prime minister decides he wants an election, it will contain enough disagree- able items to force the opposition to vote against it. If he doesn’t want an election it will be more balanced. Any competent finance minister should be capable of overseeing the preparation of such a budget while Parliament is in session. I believe the prime minister prorogued Parliament to avoid the scrutiny and embarrassing facts that his government was subject to. I believe the majority of Canadians agree with me in spite of Stephen Harp- er’s belief that Canadians are apathetic and don’t care what he does to our Par- liamentary system. Don Mattison Whitby Your local council could always use a few good men and women With the advent of a new year comes the chance to sign nomination forms and declare the intention to run for office in the 2010 municipal election. If you’ve ever thought, really seriously thought, you could do better than the peo- ple at your local municipal hall, this is your chance to finally prove it. However, it will take money, time and commitment. And if you’re lucky enough to triumph on election night, that’s when the real work begins. But those who have been successful, such as longtime Durham regional council- lors Rick Johnston of Pickering and Nester Pidwerbecki of Oshawa, will tell you they would have it no other way. The veteran municipal politicians have been returned to their respective council posts time and time again and keep on running because they truly love what they do. They’re both committed to local, grassroots govern- ment and while both are also not shy about showing their political stripes -- Mr. John- ston has run for the Conservatives, while Mr. Pidwerbecki worked as an executive assistant for former federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent and is always front and centre in Oshawa NDP campaigns -- their hearts are in their local communities. It may seem like they’ve been there for- ever, but both had to do what every person who sits on council must do: break through and win for the first time. Anyone thinking of taking the municipal political plunge has to reckon with defeat- ing an incumbent. That’s as true in a wide open race like the at-large elections for local and regional councillors in Oshawa as it is for those in ward races in Ajax or Clarington. No matter where you decide to run, unless you’re extremely lucky and you get acclaimed, you’ll have a battle on your hands. But if making a difference, if having a hand in shaping your community and if being centrally involved in the goings-on of your municipality are important to you, it doesn’t get much more intense than local politics. Instead of being one of those people complaining about the tax increase, you can actually do something about it -- or at least try to. Instead of just throwing your hands in the air over a decision council made, you can make the decision. Instead of being frustrated at what councillors are saying at the municipal table, you can be one of the people doing the talking -- or better yet, listening. It takes good people to run a local council and there are never enough of them. If you want to be a part of shaping your commu- nity from the inside out, jump into the race this fall. You never know where it could take you. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / letter writers are obliged to back up statements with verifiable facts / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 8, 20106 P newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 8, 20107 AP Learn English. The décor duo from Steven and Chris say the fi rst step is to look through what you already have with fresh eyes and think about arranging things in your home a little differently. 1. Embrace Colour: seek saturated jewel tones in amber, plum or peacock blue. Pull out all of your objects in one colour and group them. For example, take an amethyst-co- loured glass vase and pack it full of deep purple tulips. 2. Pick Patterns: checks and tartans are huge this season. For that warm country clas- sic feel, go for a tartan with rich colours. The key is to build the look – for example, a Royal ‘Stewart plaid’ could be great with a big wooden bowl of Macintosh apples or red candles. 3. Group Finishes: warm metallics are this season’s rage. Bring out the bronze, brass or gold accessories, frames and bowls and group them together on a simple tray. Just as in fashion, we are seeing designers mixing and matching with silver and gold, so give it a try. 4. Display the handmade homespun: employ vintage with a vengeance. Bring out that handmade quilt and display it on a plain sofa or chair, or pull out that earthy pottery Beat the winter blues with lovely warm hues bowl from the craft fair. These “back to basics” are great as décor accents, but be mindful of moderation. Limit yourself to one trend – the careful contrast between old and new can be the most effective way to accessorize your space. There are many more décor ideas from Steven and Chris online at www.cbc.ca/steve- nandchris, and you can submit your own décor questions for the guys’ expert advice. www.newscanada.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • January 8, 201014 AP Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comEntertainment MUSIC Monnakoe forges a unique sound Ajax natives play Whitby tonight BY MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- In an age when describing a movie or band inev- itably leads to naming other films or groups, Monnakoe resists attempts to classify itself. The band simply doesn’t sound like anyone else. “It’s a little bit of the future, it’s a little bit of the past,” says vocal- ist Mark Polak, who offers the tag electronic pop music. “I do think we’re doing some- thing different with it.” He and Patrick Hodgson, both Ajax natives, make up the band, which plays a free show in Whitby tonight. It’s a relatively new partner- ship, with Polak saying Mon- nakoe has played a dozen or so shows, including The El Mocam- bo in Toronto. Polak is the vocalist and does most of the writing, but doesn’t diminish his partner’s contribu- tions in that area, noting that “I like to think that I paint the pic- tures and he frames them. “We go back and forth,” he says. “I’ll bring in an idea and he’ll tweak it so it’s a little bit more Monnakoe. We just play off each other’s strengths.” After previous starts and spurts in the biz, Polak was going to launch this latest incarnation of himself as a solo act. But when he went to Hodgson’s studio and showed him his stuff, Polak suggested making the solo act a duo. Hodgson, in addition to han- dling the beats and synthesizers, enjoys experimenting with sound and often takes the raw product from Polak and fine tunes it. The band released an EP, Signs of Life, five months ago and will likely release its first album for free. Polak says it’s not like doing so would drain them of all their material, as he is constantly writ- ing music. “We just have so much materi- al,” he says, noting there’s enough for four albums’ worth. In the near future, Polak says he would like Monnakoe to go on “some sort of mini-tour, either nation-wide or across the pond.” More pressing, perhaps, is the need for some professional help to take Monnakoe to the next level, taking care of things like “marketing, advertising, finding shows for us where we can open for more established bands.” Monnakoe takes the stage at J P Fitzpatrick and Son, in the Whitby Entertainment Centrum. SUPPLIED PHOTO DURHAM -- Monnakoe, comprised of Ajax natives Mark Polak and Patrick Hodgson, plays J P Fitzpatrick and Son in Whitby on Jan. 8. ART EXHIBITION Two-man photo exhibit in Ajax Oshawa shooters present joint show DURHAM -- Oshawa photographers Phil Hulaj and Robert Fisher are showing their works in Ajax. The two-man exhibit is at Ajax’s McLean Community Centre until Feb. 8. The opening reception is Jan. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the centre, at 95 Magill Dr., off Westney Road north of Hwy. 401. Hulaj is a life-long Oshawa resident who has exhibited his work in various venues. Fisher is influenced by artists such as Monet and Lismer and Carr in his impressionistic photography. The exhibition is a part of Art in Pub- lic Places, a PineRidge Arts Council ini- tiative. HISTORICAL SOCIETY Prisoners’ boxes explored PICKERING -- Prisoners’ boxes, and what they tell us about the men who carved them, is Darryl Withrow’s topic at a Jan. 12 meeting. The Pickering Township Historical Society welcomes Withrow to its 7:30 p.m. meeting at the East Shore Commu- nity Centre, 910 Liverpool Rd. (just south of Hwy. 401). The Toronto Jail during the winter of 1838 contained a number of rebels from the previous year’s rebellion. Many spent their time carving small wooden boxes dubbed prisoners’ boxes. Withrow has researched the boxes and re-cre- ated many of them. He will speak about the boxes and the history they represent, bringing several of his replicas. The PTHS meetings, on the second Tuesday of each month (but not in July and August), are free and open to the public. In the beginning... AJAX -- J. In the end, after weighing all of her options, she chose the University at Buffalo. Now, she is wrestling with another decision, one that could be categorized as even more difficult. The Pickering resident is being courted by the national programs of both Jamaica and Canada, and is in limbo as to which country to commit to. “I’m just taking it slow and praying about it because I’m a big believer in Jesus Christ,” she says of the dilemma. “So, I pray about it to just wait to see what direction the Lord points me in.” Initially, it looked like Jamaica, the coun- try of her parents’ birth, was going to be her international destination. But after coaches with the Canadian team came to a training session at the Shooting Stars Academy under the guidance of her uncle, Junior Groves, a former Jamaican national player, they could see the potential. As a result, an invitation was extended to McCalla to an U20 national team training session in Florida last summer to become familiar with the Canadian program. While she can train with both countries for now, once she plays an international cap, her rights belong to that country. She is hoping to make a decision in regards to her internation- al allegiance by the end of January. She is also hoping the decision will turn out as well as the one she made to attend Buffa- lo, where she scored 11 goals and added 18 assists in 68 career games with the Bulls. The Dunbarton High School graduate not only finished a strong athletic career with her grad- uation last May, she also earned a degree in health and human sciences. “It feels like I was just starting,” she says of how fast the four years flew by. “Going in as a freshman, I remember driving down there, my grandfather was telling me, ‘Brooke, trust me, this is going to go by fast and you’re not going to believe it.’ Now, it’s done already. “Even when you’re in it, it doesn’t feel like it’s going by that quick. But once you’re done, you’re like, ‘Wow. I’m finished. I’m moving on to the next part of my life.’” She had never been away from home on her own prior to enrolling at university, and while she was responsible and disciplined enough to make the transition, the experience did mature her in a hurry. “You have to grow up and do it yourself,” she says. “Your parents aren’t there to look after you constantly. You have to make decisions and get things done, because you know if you don’t, the coach is going to be on your back or someone in the athletic department is going to be on your back.” If the Jamaica/Canada decision isn’t weigh- ing on her mind enough, she is also trying to catch on with a club team overseas. While training twice a day everyday is helping her improve, her preference is to get into a game environment. To that extent, she has nar- rowed her search to Sweden, Germany, Nor- way or Italy. SOCCER Decisions, decisions PAUL HOKANSON / UB ATHLETICS PICKERING -- Brooke McCalla is trying to decide whether to commit to the national soc- cer programs of Canada or Jamaica. The Pickering resident spent four years playing soc- cer on scholarship for the University at Buffalo. Ajax resident trying to make U20 soccer team AJAX -- Bryanna McCarthy is off to Florida, but not for the custom- ary vacation to escape the snow that is usually associated with this time of year. McCarthy, of Ajax, is one of 23 players that Canada’s women’s U20 team has invited to its prepa- ratory Jan. 11-18 in Tampa, Flori- da. From this group, coach Caro- lina Morace will make her final selection for the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s under-20 championship in Cuidad, Guatemala, which runs Jan. 20-30. Canada faces group opponents Costa Rica on Jan. 20, Cuba on Jan. 22 and Guatemala on Jan. 24. The top two teams in the group advance to the semifinal stage on Jan. 28, with the final on Jan. 30. The top-three teams from the eight-team CONCACAF Wom- en’s under-20 championship will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Germany 2010. McCarthy completed her fresh- man season with the West Virginia Mountaineers, helping the Moun- taineers to a 10th-straight NCAA tournament appearance. She appeared in all 23 matches, scor- ing three goals and dishing out one assist as a rookie. McCarthy was named a CollegeSoccer360 Primetime Performer of the Week for her game-tying goal in a 1-1 draw at Virginia where she was named to the Virginia NIKE Soc- cer Classic All-Tournament Team. In Florida, coach Morace and her staff will put the team through one or two sessions each day. From the group of 23 players, there will be 20 players selected for the final championship team that will rep- resent Canada in Guatemala. Canada is the reigning cham- pion from the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s under-20 champion- ship. In three championships, Canada has won two gold med- als (2004 and 2008) and one sil- ver medal (2006). Each of the last three finals has featured Canada against USA. While Canada won the 2008 confederation title, USA won the last FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title at Chile 2008. COLUMN Annandale juniors just miss out on 2010 Olympic prize BY JIM EASSON The Toronto Curling Asso- ciation year-end junior/ban- tam bonspiel has for years offered an exchange trip to Switzerland to the winning junior teams. This year, instead, the first prize is an all-expenses paid five-day, four-night trip to watch the curling at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancou- ver. The Annandale junior women’s team of Laura Arbour with Kristy Hurst, Kristin Haidasz and Emily Rose were the main event runners-up and collected $920. A win in that game would have sent them to Vancouver to watch Olym- pic curling. Three other Annandale teams were also in the bon- spiel. Lesley Pyne, Stacey Hogan, Suzanne Miller and Katie Hickey lost in the B event semifinal in the junior women’s division. The four- some of Michael Bryson with James McPherson, Sandy Martin and Josh Hall were the main event consolation runners-up in the junior men’s division and collect- ed $460. The team of Ben Bevan, Corey Gaudette, Jake McGhee and Carter Adair lost in the B event semifinal in the bantam boys division. Two Annandale junior teams were competing in the Ontario championships in Teeswater earlier this week. The men’s team was comprised of skip Michael Bryson with James McPher- son, Sandy Martin and Josh Hall, and Susannah Moylan as coach. The Annandale junior women’s team was skipped by Laura Arbour with Kristy Hurst, Kristin Haidasz and Emily Rose, and is coached by Steve Hurst. Winners at the pro- vincial advance to the Cana- dian championships slated for Sorel-Tracy, Quebec Jan. 16-24. The OCA Men’s Tankard for Region 2 took place at the Minden Curling Club Jan. 2-3. Rob Lobel, of Whitby, won the Zone 6 playdown at Annandale back on Dec. 6. The Lobel team won the A side of the regional play- down and now advances to the Provincial champion- ships to be held in Napanee Feb. 1-7. Next on the calendar for Team Howard, with Pickering resident Rich- ard Hart at vice, and the front end of Brent Laing and Craig Savill, is the Capital One Grand Slam of Curl- ing event, The National. It is taking place in the Sleeman Centre in Guelph, Jan. 6 to 10, with an 18-team draw of international championship curlers. CBC will carry some of the games starting Jan. 8. The men’s 2009-10 series began in October with Team Howard capturing the Grey Power World Cup of Curl- ing at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. GYMNASTICS Ajax, Pickering athletes attend qualifier DURHAM -- -- Thirty-three Gemini Gymnasts partici- pated in Ontario’s first pro- vincial qualifier of the season hosted by Halton Hills Gym- nastics Club in Georgetown. Gemini Gymnasts received top marks placing first over- all in nine of 15 categories. In level 5, age 9, Breanna Ho (Ajax) received gold all around with silver medals on floor and bars. Justine Veillette (Ajax) owned the level 6, age 11 cat- egory with gold on all four events for an all around gold finish. In level 8 age 10-11, Victo- ria Dobson (Pickering) led the way with gold on vault and floor, silver on bars and bronze on beam for an all around gold. PICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURECrawford & Sons: Fixing Basement Leaks Right the First Time A leaking basement is frustrating and expensive – and it’s not something you want to have to fix repeatedly. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. PROFESSIONAL AND COURTEOUS SERVICE 905-686-6880 Targetting Youth Olympics PICKERING -- Local bad- minton athlete Nyl Yakura continues to succeed on the court. The Pickering resident competed in four major events recently and brought home a few medals for his efforts. Yakura, competing at the Prairie Jr. Elite event, won the U19 doubles and mixed doubles, but lost in the semi- finals during singles compe- tition in October. At November’s Toronto Junior Open, Yakura was tops in the U19 singles and doubles and captured a sil- ver in the mixed division. Yakura headed east in December, competing at the New Brunswick senior and junior Elite tournaments, winning a bronze in men’s doubles at the senior event, which was an open adult tournament, and a gold in U19 mixed doubles at the junior. He also took the court in singles action at the junior event, but fell short due to injury. Yakura’s 2010 schedule appears to be a busy one. This weekend he will be at the Toronto Open, played at the Humber College and later this month will travel to compete in the Quebec Jr. Elite tournament.
