But the 10-year-old can’t join them; the only child has been holed up in his home for the past 10 days after being diagnosed with a mild case of H1N1. It was the Friday before Halloween when Kierin came home at lunch time with a headache, says his mother, Erin Martin. By 5:30 p.m., they rushed to the emergency room at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital when his fever reached nearly 102 F. “It was scary,” Ms. Martin says, describ- ing how upset and frightened her son was from a quickly-worsening sickness he’d never experienced before. They waited for about 10 minutes in the emergency waiting room, she says, and despite her fears, she thought she was being an overprotective parent. But she was quite surprised to hear her SHANNON MAGUIRE / METROLAND PICKERING -- Kierin Martin came down with H1N1 flu on the Halloween weekend and was isolated in his home. He was given Tamiflu and the nurses tried to hydrate him, she says. He then went into a quarantined room. “There were a couple of little guys in there, too,” she says. The hospital confirmed last week that it’s treated patients for H1N1, but none were admitted. The family underwent a two-day incu- bation period at home to ensure none of the members had caught the virus. Ms. Martin says they had coughs but noth- ing close to what Kierin caught. Kierin’s mother also had to watch his breathing, wake him up continuously and ensure his temperature didn’t spike. Kierin describes the sickness as mak- ing him very tired, dizzy, achy and throwing up to the point of emptiness in his system, and is still a little taken aback that his case was only mild. “I feel bad for the kids that have a bad case,” he says. He says the day he felt the worst was Halloween. He was disappointed he couldn’t trick-or-treat dressed as Bub- bles from The Trailer Park Boys as planned. “My Halloween dance was that day and our Halloween celebration,” he says. But to his delight, a large group of his friends presented him with a huge col- lection of candy they had collected for him. His neighbour also delivered their leftover candy. Now feeling better, he’s gone through about half of the box. “I want to thank my friends for helping me out,” he says. Ms. Martin was concerned parents weren’t notified that H1N1 had officially hit the school after she had told them of her son’s illness. But Mark Joel, Durham District School Board superintendant, said it’s not nec- essary to notify parents each time. At the Durham District School Board, notices from the regional health depart- ment were sent before this season’s out- break began occurring. “Basically it’s here,” Mr. Joel said. “There’s no more notices needed.” The board must report to the Province when it reaches a 10-per cent absentee rate, and reports daily to the Region’s health department. When a school hits 20-per cent absenteeism, it’s contacted by the department to ensure everything is being done appropriately to prevent its spread. Sunday was the first day Kierin was able to go outside. His immune system was down and it was recommended he stay inside in order to ensure a full recovery. Almost back to his old self, Kierin will be rejoining his classmates very soon. He’s fine with that; he’ll just miss his video games, which he spent the last 10 days playing at home. -- With files from Crystal Crimi and Jennifer Stone H1N1 Pickering victim cheered by friends’ candy contribution PICKERING from page 1 I feel bad for the kids that have a bad case. All content copyright Editorial Opinions HOCKEY Hard junior hit was clean and didn’t deserve suspension To the editor: By now, almost everyone has seen the body check by Michael Liambas, of the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters on Ben Fanelli of the Kitchener Rangers. While no one wants to see anyone hurt playing hockey, I feel that I have to speak up against the ridiculous suspen- sion handed out by OHL Commissioner David Branch. He suspended Liambis for the rest of the year, what remains of his career. That was a clean hit, not a charge by Liambas. He took his last stride near the bottom of the circle; he then glided into Fanelli. There was no jump, no elbow, no knee, no high stick or any other infrac- tion. He just used his shoulder. He did exactly what a forward is sup- posed to do, create pressure, finish your check and force a possible turnover. Fanelli attempted a last-second reverse pass, as Liambas was already starting his body check. This sudden change in direction, along with the Liambas clean body check helped to create the momentum that caused the devastating injuries suffered by Fanelli. Players have to take responsibility for the situation they put themselves into. They must be aware of the play that is unfolding in front of them. Players must realize that when you turn away from a hit like that, instead of just taking the hit, you are putting yourself into a dangerous situation. If a player is run from behind and goes head first into the boards, then that is a drastically different situation, and these types of hits should have drastic punish- ment. As long as good Canadian hockey is played, where players keep their head up and are not afraid to take a hit, this terrible accident will not be repeated. Blaine Sleep Blackstock HEALTH CARE Hospital staff understand pain To the editor: My wife of 31 years passed away April 27, 2008. She had cancer. When I read the let- ter, “Laughter not the best medicine at Lak- eridge Health Oshawa”, I wanted to share my feelings with Cindy Meghu, or anyone who feels the way Cindy feels about the staff at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. I feel your pain. The tests, treatments, appointments, took us to five hospitals in the GTA. My wife had a test, they found a tumour in her lung. And because of com- plications they could not operate. They told us that she had three years to live, maybe longer if she had radiation and chemother- apy treatments. We hoped and prayed that the treatments would shrink the tumour enough so that they could operate, but she developed breast cancer while in treat- ment. Instead of going in the hospital we brought her home with a hospital bed, so my two daughters and I could be with her. She developed bone cancer and short- ly thereafter, she passed away. The three years they predicted was only one and a half years. She was only 48, but she had more courage than anyone I have ever met. Cindy, I have a suggestion for you. Forget about the day you went into the hospital with your feather boas and tiaras and the letter you wrote. Perhaps you could show her some photos of these things. I learned a lot from the staff at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. cancer ward, and I could feel their compassion and understanding for the patients and their families embrace them, and spend time with your sister in law. Trust me, you will feel better in the end. Like I said, I feel and I’m sure the staff at Lakeridge Health Oshawa understand your pain. Jamie Webber Oshawa Major efforts needed to stamp out scourge of impaired driving We often need to hear the painful, grim details of a single person’s story to strike a chord when it comes to changing destruc- tive behaviour. That’s why the tale told by Michelle Crabb, new president of the Durham chapter of Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, hits home. The 25-year-old can stand in front of a class of high school students and speak about the day, nearly three years ago, when her younger brother, Taylor, made the deci- sion to take a ride with a drunk friend. It ended with the pair crashing into a tree in Ajax and her 20-year-old sibling’s death. As MADD kicked off its annual red rib- bon campaign to bring awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, Ms. Crabb’s story is a stark reminder of the true cost involved. And it happens every day. A study commissioned by MADD pre- pared by the University of British Colum- bia on the impact of impaired driving across Canada from 1999 through 2006 discovered some startling statistics. It found 9,698 peo- ple had been killed in accidents involving impaired drivers during those eight years, an average of 1,212 per year in Canada. And 572,187 people were injured in accidents involved impaired drivers between 1999- 2006, an average of 71,523 per year. Roughly a third of all traffic accidents involve some form of impairment, a num- ber far too high given the increasingly tough penalties developed by law enforce- ment. MADD continues to get the word out through public education programs, but not enough people are listening. It’s hard to understand how so many thou- sands of people across Canada can still, on a daily basis, get into their vehicles and drive impaired. And far too many of them wind up killing themselves, their loved ones or other innocent people. The only answers are to continue to spread the word through the vigorous efforts of leaders like Ms. Crabb and her col- leagues at MADD and through other groups committed to stamping out impaired driv- ing. Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere patrols will be hitting Durham’s highways and biways starting this Tuesday for the next seven weeks and thousands of motor- ists will be stopped in the largest effort of the year to contain impaired driving. And legislators can continue to toughen laws against first-time and repeat offenders to make it clear impaired driving is unac- ceptable behaviour that will not be tolerat- ed. It’s imperative we do everything we can as a society to stop those horrible late-night calls that destroy lives and crush souls. Impaired driving can be stopped -- if every- body does their part to make it happen. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / letter writers are obliged to back up statements with verifiable facts / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 12, 20096 P newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 12, 20097 AP Benefits for Women A Business Building Organization Presents PHENOMENAL WOMEN AWARDS DINNER Honorary Chair: Roger Anderson, Regional Chair Sponsored by THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2009 6:00 PM TO 10:00 PM Carruther’s Creek Golf & Country Club Lake Ridge S & Bayly in Ajax, Ontario TICKETS ARE $ 85.00 PER PERSON Corporate Tables of 8 available $650.00 NO TICKETS AT THE DOOR - MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED. New clinic benefits those without family doctor DURHAM -- A new assessment clinic has opened in Scarborough to serve west Durham residents without a family doc- tor. An unattached patient health assess- ment and referral clinic has opened at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital, 2863 Ellesmere Rd., Scarborough, which also serves residents of the west Durham area. The new clinic will provide patients without a nurse practitioner or doctor with a complete health check-up and assistance with getting follow-up care. The clinics will be run by late-career physicians, walk-in clinic physicians, nurse practitioners and registered nurs- es. The team will provide a limited level of follow-up as it’s not intended to pro- vide comprehensive primary care. Instead, it concentrates on assessment, screening, required follow-up and refer- ral or triage. Those who receive care at the clin- ic will remain on the Province’s Health Care Connect waiting list for primary care (www.health.gov.on.ca). The idea was first brought to the atten- tion of the Central East Local Health Integration Network in 2008 by a consti- tutional lawyer who challenged the CE LHIN to develop a strategy to improve access to care for those without a pri- mary care provider, according to the CE LHIN’s website. As more people got on board, a plan was put into action. In June, the CE LHIN board of direc- tors approved funding for a nine-month demonstration project in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Scarborough. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care estimates around 86,000 patients without doctors are living in the CE LHIN. Federal and provincial elections in Canada have recently drawn voter turnout numbers in the high 50 to mid-60% range -- below that of past decades. Worse still is voter turnout for municipal elections which, in Durham Region in 2006, ranged from a low of 23% in Ajax to a high of 49% in Brock and Uxbridge. On Oct. 25, 2010 Durham Region voters will once again go to the polls to elect their city, town and regional councillors and school board trustees. Between today and election day, this newspaper will run a series of feature stories, editorials and columns exploring the issue of why we should take our democracy and the right to vote seriously: you, too, can Make A Difference. Metroland Durham Region Media Group Local group continues efforts to take back roads from drunk drivers BY CHRIS HALL chall@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Michelle Crabb knows first- hand how quickly a life can be lost at the hands of a drunk driver behind the wheel of a car. Almost three years ago, her younger broth- er, Taylor, 20, made the fateful decision to get into a vehicle with his boozed-up best friend. Their journey took them through the streets of Ajax, during the evening hours of April 22, 2007, and came to an abrupt end when the vehicle smashed into a tree. “Drinking and driving was never in my world when I was growing up. And then, all of sudden, it has a huge effect on your life,” she said recently of her brother’s death. Two months after the crash, around the time of her brother’s June 9 birthday, she decided to take a stand against impaired driving and contacted the Durham Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter. A month after that, she was a member. Fast-forward to a cold, blustery and rainy November day and Ms. Crabb, 25, is now the president of the Durham MADD chapter and kicking off her first Red Ribbon campaign at Mosport. Surrounded by a collection of police officers from a variety of forces that patrol Durham’s roadways and a handful of local dignitaries and politicians, Ms. Crabb impressed upon a small crowd the importance of making the right choice after a night of partying. “The message is clear: You can choose a ride safely and you can choose to save lives,” said Ms. Crabb. “It is possible to stop impaired driving.” The campaign itself, with the theme Start with a red ribbon, Finish by saving lives for 2009, is a simple one. Supporters are asked to tie a red ribbon to their antenna, side mirror or any other visible location on their vehicle, which demonstrates their commitment to safe and sober driving. The ribbons also serve as a symbol to remember those injured or killed as a result of drunk driving. According to MADD statistics, each day four Canadians are killed and 207 injured, on average, due to alcohol- and drug-related accidents. “We have to be aware that drinking and driving doesn’t mix and that there are con- sequences for individuals, families and the community,” said Durham MPP John O’Toole. “It’s very important that we all take this seriously.” Scott Burns, the Durham police force’s newly-announced deputy chief-elect, noted the regional police service has proudly part- nered with MADD for years on the cam- paign. “The commitment to road safety is criti- cal to every resident in the region,” he said, noting Durham police will kick off their own RIDE initiative on Nov. 17. Tiny and slender, Ms. Crabb uses her youth- ful appearance to her advantage when it comes to getting the message about impaired driving out to Durham’s youth. At first blush, she may appear to be just another classmate when she strolls through the halls of Durham’s high schools. But when she stands at the front of the room and recounts her brother’s fate, a connection is made, said Ms. Crabb. “I think it really hits home with them,” she said. “I’m not here by choice. I think of it this way: If I had cancer, this would be my chemo. This is how I cope,” Ms. Crabb said of her public speaking engagements. “If I can save one kid or adult from drinking and driving, then all this work will be worth it.” The Red Ribbon campaign runs through to the end of the first week in January. MADD Canada ribbons will be available at business- es across Durham Region. For more information on the campaign: visit www.madd-durham.com Page 6 - Today’s editorial DRINKING AND DRIVING Durham MADD chapter kicks off red ribbon campaign CELIA KLEMENZ / METROLAND DURHAM -- Michelle Crabb, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Durham Region chapter president, was at Mosport Raceway on Nov. 5 to kick off the 2009 MADD red ribbon campaign, Start with a red ribbon, finish by saving lives. Health & Wellness ADVERTISING FEATURE Curves of Ajax & Pickering Introduces New Weight Management Program That’s FREE to ALL Women Local women’s health centre recognizes November’s awareness campaign with It’s new weight loss program AJAX/PICKERING NOVEMBER– More than half of adult women are overweight and more than one-third of adult women are obese, according to the Obesity Association. In fact, obesity plays a major role in the poor health of women, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Such statistics can be alarming, and the increase in obesity is why places, like the local Curves center, have educational programs to address weight loss through focused cur- ricula and classes. Wouldn’t it be great to have a program that helps you reach your weight goal and stay there? In order to reach your weight goal, however, you have to re- train and sustain your metabolism. In recognition of National Women’s Health and Fitness Day, the Curves locations in Ajax and Pickering is announcing its no cost, 30-Day Diet Plan program for all Ajax and Pickering area women interested in weight-loss results and health improvement. The 30-Day Diet Plan program is a series of free weight management classes. These classes are based on recent research fi ndings from the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Laboratory at Texas A&M University. They teach Curves’ demonstrat- ed method for raising metabolism and losing weight. National Women’s Health and Fitness Day gives Curves an opportunity to show women in our own community how easy it is to gain control of their weight. We realize women in Ajax and Pickering are thinking about going to other programs like Weight Watchers. That is why we invite them to take a look at our program which is free to join and backed by a studied system.” Classes for the 30-Diet Plan program include: 1. Start-Up Class (90 minutes) and progression to Phase 2 for fi rst-time participants. 2. Phase 3 Class (30 minutes) to teach the most important stage of the Curves Weight Management Plan and special techniques for ongoing weight maintenance. 3. Special Topics Classes (30 minutes) to cover a different health-related topic each month, including Smart Grocery Shopping, Choosing the Right Carbohydrates, Eating Out, Emotional Eating and more. All classes are available at no fee and no membership is required. The classes are administered by hands-on activities facilitated by weight management coaches from Curves of Ajax and Pickering and DVDs that provide lessons by Curves’ Registered Dietitian Nadia Rodman. Participants are encouraged to make a weekly appointment to weigh in with their weight management coach- es, who provide ongoing support and accountability. We hope to show local women how they can benefi t from these specialized classes and invite them to learn a brand new way to lose weight and keep it off – without counting points, calories or carbohydrates.” For more information about Curves of Ajax and Pickering and when the diet classes are offered, please contact the club close to you. Sunday November 29, 2009Kingsway College, Oshawa, 10am-4:30pm www.showsdurhamregion.com withwith thisthis couponcoupon Ajax Ajax basketball players leading the Lords in early going of college season BY SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- The Durham Lords are being led by a host of local players in OCAA men’s basketball, and so far the results have been impressive. The fab-five from Ajax, Tyler Pelley, Eric Smith, Tyler McGarri- ty, Livingston Cunningham and Dave Parks, make up almost half of coach Desmond Rowley’s roster and though the season is in its infancy, it hasn’t taken long for them to establish their presence on the court as they have led the Lords to a 3-1 start. According to the 6-foot-4 Smith, who leads the team in points (20) and rebounds (eight) per game, the key to that success has been dedication at practice, resulting in improved play on defence. “That is the big difference,” says Smith, Durham’s 2008-09 male freshman of the year. “During practice, we are more focused on the defensive end more than the offensive end. Everyone pretty much on this team can score so we are putting more focus on the defen- sive side.” That much was evident in their home opener Nov. 6 as the Lords held the Loyalist Lancers to only 56 points in an 86-56 victory. Pelley, a former J. Clarke Richardson athlete and now the start- ing point guard for the Lords, has been a driving force behind the Lords’ ability to take control of a game in their own end of the court. Through four games he has managed an eye-popping 28 steals, including 20 in his last two games, 12 of which came against Loyal- ist. With the much-improved play defending their own basket, oppor- tunities have opened up offensively for the Lords as they are aver- aging a shade under 88 points a game, nearly 13 more than they allow. Should that continue, the 5-foot-8 Pelley believes the sky is the limit for a Lords team that ended last season with a disappointing playoff loss to Algoma. “Right now, we should be the top team no matter what,” Pelley said of his outlook. “But it’s up to us and whether we want to reach up and grab it.” To date, their only loss this year has come at the hands of the undefeated Fleming Knights, a team led by former Lords star Bill Crowdis and, come the end of the season, the Knights will be one team the Lords will have to get through on their quest for a championship. Speaking of losses, last week the Lords had to deal with the absence of McGarrity, who suffered an injury and was forced to miss the home opener after averaging 19.5 points in two previous games. McGarrity, a 6-foot-5 forward, joined the Lords this season after spending some time at the Univer- sity of Windsor. He believes, once healthy, he can definitely make a sustained impact this season. “I like to get out on the fast break and run,” he said in explaining what he brings to the floor. “I fit in a lot better here than I did in Windsor.” Most teams would surely suffer on the floor when losing a player of McGarrity’s ilk to injury, however, with him out, it gave Cunningham a chance to step up. And step up he did. The Pine Ridge Secondary product posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Loyalist and followed that up with a 19-point effort in a win over Cambri- an. A 6-foot-4 forward, Cunningham understands minutes will be hard to come by in a talented Lords front court this season, but knows what he needs to stay on the floor. “I’ve got to get in better shape,” he says. “The intensity level is a lot higher (in college), but I should be able to cope with it.” Meanwhile Parks, who like Pelley and Smith is in his second year with the Lords, is rel- ishing his role in the team’s supporting cast, similar to the game he played a year ago coming out of Pickering High School. “It hasn’t changed too much,” says the smallest player on the team, listed at 5-foot- 8. “I just look at the stuff Pelley is doing because he’s the starter ... I try to follow his lead because he sets a good example.” In addition to the aforementioned five, the Lords’ roster also features four other players from Durham Region in Pickering’s Vinesh Anand and Nikolas Gardner, and Osha- wa’s Courtney Small and Tyler Eteli.newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • November 12, 200914 AP Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.com Durham’s Fab Five OSHAWA -- Clockwise from top of page: Tyler Pelley, Dave Parks, Eric Smith, Livingston Cunningham and Tyler McGarrity. This year, that didn’t deter the cross- country team from enjoying a successful season. The team parlayed a team champi- onship at LOSSA, the first ever for the school, to a solid showing at the OFSAA provincial championships, including a team title for the midget boys. “We’ve always had good individuals at this school. We just lucked into a group that wanted to come out and train,” said coach Dale Lapham. “Pickering is so strong at other sports, most years by the second week of school, we’re down to no team because all the other great teams get all the athletes.” At the LOSSA championships, the teams collectively put in dominat- ing performances. The midget girls and boys and junior girls won gold, the senior girls bronze, the senior boys were fourth and the junior boys sixth. Individually, Jay Boychuck was the first to cross the line in the senior boys’ divi- sion, while Rebecca Mendes was third in the senior girls. At OFSAA, the midget boys’ team of Lukas Jarron, Mateo Haza, Matthew Robertson, Michael Kurish and Eric Robson combined for a total time of 1:19:30.50, besting second-place Theri- ault from Timmins, which posted a time of 1:20:16.68 in the 5km race. That performance by the Pickering fivesome should ensure a bright future for the team over the next three years. “I’m sure that will be a draw for us for the next few years,” Lapham agreed. At the OFSAA championships held at Boyd Conservation in Woodbridge, the midget girls finished 23rd of 36 teams, with Mikayla Dias the top finisher in 84th. The junior girls finished 18th out of 37, with Nicole Gardener’s 66th placing the top performance. Rebecca Mendes was 70th in senior girls and Jay Boychuck picked up an award for his 8th place fin- ish in senior boys. After leading 1-0 through the first period and tied 1-1 through two, the Panthers gave up three goals to Peterborough in the final 20 minutes, dropping a 4-1 deci- sion. Josh Dadic opened the scor- ing just 3:21 into the game on a setup from Khalid Alli and Jordan Ramsay. Pickering dominated the period, outshooting Peterbor- ough 19-5. Things started to turn the other way in the second peri- od, as Peterborough held a 14-9 shot advantage, scoring the only goal of the period, a power play marker 6:40 in. That trend continued in the third as Peterborough scored three times, the final tally short- handed into an empty net with three seconds remaining in the game. Anthony Kimlin went the dis- tance in net for the Panthers fac- ing 31 shots, while his teammates fired 36 the other way. Kimlin was backed up by Mike Sherameta after Charlie Millen was traded to the Huntsville Otters in a cash transaction. Millen had appeared in just two games with the Pan- thers, one of those in relief. Pickering, which has dropped to ninth in the 10-team league with a record of 8-13-2, hosts North York on Friday at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, they will make a trip to Hamilton. Double gold medals for Durham hockey duo SURREY, B.C. -- There’s no doubt- ing Ontario is the best when it comes to producing young female talent for Hockey Canada. And there’s no doubting Whitby’s Kelly Terry and Pickering’s Shan- non Stoneburgh are among the best of the best. Ontario Red won gold for the sixth straight year at the 2009 National Women’s Under-18 Championship, defeating a second entry from this province, Ontario Blue, 5-1 in the final Nov. 8 at South Surrey Arena. It’s the second straight title for both Terry and Stoneburgh, who were also on the team last year. Stoneburgh, a defence- man with the PWHL’s Toronto Aeros, scored a goal early in the second period to give Ontario Red a 3-0 lead. Both local players ended up with three points in five games, includ- ing a pair of goals by Stoneburgh. Ontario Red won all five games, outscoring the opposition 19-7. The PWHL had the weekend off due to the tournament. The Wolves, tied in eighth place with a 5-6-0-0 record, are back in action Saturday at home against Brampton (6 p.m., Iroquois 3) and Sunday in Hamilton. Terry leads the team and is sec- ond in the league with 11-9-20 scoring stats in 10 games. Stoneburgh has five points in 10 games with the Aeros, which are second in the standings at 8-1-0-1.
