NOW HIRING at over 50 stores! Inpartnership with In support of Went for a walk Tuesday, failed to return BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Provincial police are searching for an Ajax woman who went missing in the Ottawa area Tuesday afternoon. Dana Moran was visiting family in Beckwith Township, in the County of Lanark, about 60 kilometres southwest of the capital. She went out for a walk at 4:30 p.m. Tues- day and was last seen walking on Sunset Lane near Mis- sissippi Lake at 6 p.m. by neighbours. OPP officers, including canine and marine units, began searching for the 30 year old at around 8 p.m. Ms. Moran is described as five foot nine, 180 pounds with a medium build, a round face, brown eyes and short brown hair in a bob style. She was wearing a black sweater with a gray top underneath, black form fitting jeans, beige shoes and was carrying a black purse. Police say they don’t suspect foul play, but they’ve been told the disappearance is out of character for Ms. Moran. “She’s just visiting here, she’s with family and she just went for a walk and kind of disappeared and at this point we don’t have any evidence to suspect foul play,” said Sgt. Angie Atkinson of the Lanark County OPP. The area where she was last seen was not too far from where she started out because there is a looped path near the lake, said Sgt. Atkinson. “I think she just decided to go for a walk, get some exer- cise, it was a nice day.” If you have information about the investigation: CALL 1-888-310-1122 (Sgt. R. Durham cops found a person concealed in the trunk and, during a search of the vehicle, seized cheques stolen from a Montreal law firm. The car had been pulled over on Knapton Avenue in the vicinity of Westney and Kingston roads at about 3:45 p.m. Sept. 19. Three adults and three youths have been charged in what police allege was a scheme that saw the ring- leader recruiting people he didn’t know at the Scar- borough Town Centre to cash the stolen cheques at banks. The cheques were stolen in June of 2009 and to date, fraudulent transactions valued at $20,000 have taken place, police said. Charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime and conspiracy to com- mit an indictable offence are Alphonse Kumunga, 26, of Montreal, Nkema Etale, 18, of Hamilton, 19- year-old Jordan Jerome, of Toronto, and a 15-year- old male from Scarborough and two Toronto boys, aged 17. Mr. Kumunga, who was free on a judicial release, was also charged with breach of recognizance and held along with one of the youths for a bail hearing. He sat beside this poor animal, and as I spoke with him to make sure all was well, and offered my help, he was gently rubbing the injured dog’s head, keeping him calm and feeling secure. I just want to applaud this teenager. When so many negative stories are often spoken of teens, I would like to remind everyone out there that there are “good apples” out there and I am proud to have spoken to one of them this morning. You are a good samaritan and I thank you for that. I know if that was my pet you came upon I would be eternally grateful for your con- cern and kindness. Fiona Chisholm Pickering ADVICE Best to keep cats indoors To the editor: Re: Lack of kindness for cat’s owner upset- ting, Jo-Anne Healy-Trepanier letter, Sept. 16. As a cat owner of many varieties for over 60 years, I sympathize with Jo-Anne Healy Trapanier for the loss of her cat Ricky. Losing a pet in any form is heart-break- ing. Having said that, I think that should she ever decide to adopt another feline com- panion, she should make sure the cat never goes out. We have a law here in Pickering and many other principalities in the GTA that says domestic animals must be on a leash if they are to be outside. Gwen Williams Pickering ECOLOGY Wildlife conservation and hunting are complete opposites To the editor: Re: Pickering Rod and Gun Club turns 50, Sept. 13. Although they do not hunt in the area anymore due to land regulations, this club still supports hunting. The manager, Vern Mason, praises his dog for catching pheasants and ducks, but calls himself an animal lover. What makes a pheasant more worthy of being hunted than a dog? I am aware of the regulations around hunting, where it can be done, when it can be done and what can and cannot be hunted. I know all the facts about controlling animal over-population. And although I am largely against the hunting of animals, I have learned to accept that some people do not feel the same way. This being said, teaching youth about hunting, as Mr. Mason suggests, is a ter- rible idea. Children will not understand all the specific regulations put around hunting. It would give them the idea that killing animals is acceptable behaviour. It puts the wrong idea in their very influential minds, which may lead to the unnecessary death of animals that peo- ple are prohibited to hunt. There is a reason why hunting is regu- lated and that you have to be 16 to hunt. It is wonderful that this club donates money to multiple wildlife conservation groups, but it does not make up for what they are doing. Wildlife conservation and hunting are complete opposites. Laura Stephan Pickering Taking the high school football field is time well spent In this day and age, winning the lottery might seem more likely to happen than getting teenagers away from their X-box or the television while at the same time peeling their ear off of that trusty ol’ cell- phone. There is no denying the current gen- eration lives technologically-based lives. However, there is still something to be said about the intrigue surrounding the high school football season. Yes, it’s that time of year again, with the Lake Ontario Secondary School Associa- tion junior season getting underway yes- terday and the seniors today. Kids are back on the gridiron and ready to battle for Durham Region football supremacy. For the next six weeks or so, every night after school, almost without fail, these kids will be on the field, playing, practis- ing and preparing for their next opponent rather than texting away on those phones or scoring interactive touchdowns on the latest football video game. They’ll do this through what might be left of the heat-filled days and they will also be out there through the rain. For those who advance through the regular season and deep into the playoffs, they’ll eventually play in snow and frigid winter weather. Some 50 kids make up the rosters of these teams that represent their respec- tive schools with pride. And that’s just at one level. Most of these schools, such as Pickering High, Ajax High, Pine Ridge, J. Clarke Richardson, Dunbarton and St. Mary, field both a junior and senior pro- gram. That’s roughly 100 kids who, for at least few hours each night, are out enjoying the fun, structured, family-like environ- ment that generally comes with being a part of a sports team, specifically at the high school level. At Pickering High, there are the peren- nial favorite Trojans, who look as though they are primed for another champion- ship run, while at Ajax High, you’ll find a Rams team that is making the jump to tier 1 this season, with hopes of impress- ing. Those are just two teams, and while their goals might be different, the com- mitment level and genuine reason behind taking the field is the same. It’s pure love for the game. It may only be for a few hours a week, but it’s still, without question, time well spent. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 24, 20096 P WE THINK... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 24, 20097 APHAJSONHAJSONAUTO CENTREAUTO CENTRE& Olco Gas Bar Ajax’s only complete auto service station • Full-Service Gas Station - Great Prices • 10 Minute Oil Changes - No Appointment Needed • Car Wash (Hand) & Detailing • Full Auto Repair Centre - Class A Mechanics Safety Inspections• Auto Glass Repair and Installation • Auto Accessories - In and Out • Stereo Systems, Alarms & Auto Starters • BBQ and Auto Propane Safety Inspections $4995 + tax Best Mechanic Shop-Rate in Town$6495 /hr+ tax Engine Light On?$0 Get a computer scan for FREE 10 Minute Oil Changes$2995 + tax Most cars, Up to 5L oil No appointment necessary Under-Carriage Rust Protection $3495 + tax Windshield Glass Chip Repairs $3495 + tax Exterior Hand Wash with $2000 gas $800 + tax Hand Wash Regular $1000 + tax Wash, Vacuum, Window Cleaning & More$1500 (SUV’s & Vans extra) + tax Auto Detailing From$8900 (SUV’s & Vans extra) OUR SPECIALS All Services Tel: 905-683-8121 Auto Shop Tel: 905-683-8121 BBQ Tank Re  ll$1500 Tax Included! After learning about the improvements and the work aside from fighting, Coun. Dickerson figured if he didn’t know a lot of it, chances were others were unaware of the other side. “It gives them a new understanding,” he said. The exhibit was accompanied Tuesday night by three special guests who have served in Afghani- stan. The first speaker, Mr. Wassill, served on a 15- month mission in Afghanistan with the civilian police in Kandahar Province. “It was one of the best experiences when I was there,” he said. Part of his mission was to investigate the kid- napping of Melissa Fung, a CBC news reporter in November 2008, who went missing from Kabul. After two months in Kabul, he spent the rest of his time in Kandahar, where they trained, mentored and coached Afghanistan police on many things such as proper gun training, how to conduct raids and mission planning. Master Warrant Officer Mark Shannon shared his experience in the country from August 2008 to April 2009 as a civilian military cooperation opera- tor team leader working within the Canadian Pro- vincial Reconstruction Teams. He’s served in Cam- bodia and Bosnia in the past. He feels Afghanistan 360 is “amazing” because it portrays what’s really happening in Afghanistan. “Yes, there’s people over there fighting but that’s only a small part of what we’re doing over there,” he said, adding he felt the majority of Afghanis wanted Canada there to help improve the coun- try. He said Canadians are there showing how to build a democratic society, proper prisons and teaching residents how to improve the Dahla Dam, the second largest dam in Afghanistan, which often experiences flooding and only allows for a limited growing season. “We’ve got to provide them an opportunity to build this country.” Once the dam is repaired, the Canadian gov- ernment expects it will provide a secure irriga- tion water supply to the majority of the Kandahari population, generate jobs and foster agriculture by providing irrigated land. Right now, he said, the only real option farmers have is to grow poppies, used to make opium. Alnoor Maherali shared his experience as an executive assistant for the assistant deputy minis- ter for international security at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada. “I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t scared going out there,” he said. But it was great to see how Canada can help Afghanistan to hopefully become independent one day, he said. Pickering resident Jan de Vries, who served with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and is now president of the battalion’s association, found the speakers informative and said he wishes more people could better understand Canada’s mis- sion. “That’s a weakness in our system that Canadians don’t always know what’s going on,” he said. He noted that no one was able to answer his question of whether Canada’s mission will be complete by 2011, when the troops are scheduled to pull out. He said that after losing 130 Canadi- ans to the mission, it would be a shame to pull out without accomplishing the goals. It’s going to be a long, slow road. In thanks to the community’s support after a fire that gutted the Claremont General Store and upper- floor apartments, store owner Daniel Park is offer- ing up homemade Korean fare on Sept. 25. It’s a token of his appreciation for the communi- ty support after the fire destroyed his 150-year-old building, a longtime community staple. Also, regular barbecue food such as hot dogs, ham- burgers and corn, will be available. Locals and resi- dents throughout the rest of Pickering are welcome. There is no set price for the food, but the church is accepting donations to cover the cost. It takes place Friday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. at Clare- mont United Church at 5052 Brock Rd. in Clare- mont. It was a long, hard fight getting to the final for the Arrows. They first beat Whitby 3-0 in July and for the following game, Ajax crossed over to play Bar- rie where they ended up in a 1- 1 draw before prevailing 3-1 on penalty kicks. On Cup weekend the Arrows were up against a tough team in Woodbridge, which grabbed the early lead, with Ajax tying it up before the half. Woodbridge then went ahead once again in the second half only to have Ajax tie it up late in the game on a free kick from 40 yards out. Once again the Arrows found themselves in penalty kicks and dominated for 4-1 victory hand- ing Woodbridge only their sec- ond loss. The following day, with Ajax nursing many injuries, they faced rival Peterborough in the finals. The game went back and forth ending in a scoreless draw, meaning another round of pen- alty kicks was in the offing. The Arrows delivered once again winning on only four shots, 4-1. The Arrows, who are sponsored by Ajax Downs, United Store Fix- tures, RP Graphics Group, Van- dermeer Nursery, and West- ney Heights Chiropractic Cen- tre, were dynamic when it came to penalty kicks during the Cup weekend, scoring 11 goals on 13 attempts, while allowing only three. Karli Anderson, Chrissy Antho- ny, Yasmine Arbaji, Christine Caswell, Tyra Gordon, Saskia Kersten, Emily Kohek, Sara Longmire, Rachel Milne, Shauna Muir, Delanie Neal, Lauren Sims, Kendra and Kristen Thompson, Kristen Urquhart, and Stephanie Zaban make up the roster, while the team is coached by Lionel Sims, Kevin Anderson, and Mike SUBMITTED PHOTO UNIONVILLE -- The Ajax Arrows pose with some hardware following their League Cup win. Dan BobBob Dwayne + HOCKEY Panthers win silver medal TORONTO -- It was a solid start to the season for the Pickering Pan- ther Bantam A team as they cap- tured a silver medal at the GTHL Brian Steele Memorial Classic. The 20-team mega bantam divi- sion saw teams from all over the Greater Toronto Hockey League, Ontario Minor Hockey Association, and several other hockey associa- tions, take part. Pickering went unbeaten at 4-0 in round-robin play scoring 23 goals with only four against. In the semifinal, the Panthers won in double overtime on a solid performance from goaltender Gra- ham Reid and a goal from Brett Hall. With that, they advanced to the finals against Uxbridge. In the finals, a tired Panther team played a stellar game, but fell short. “I am so proud of our team for finishing second out of 20 teams,” said coach Leo Nat. “They put out a determined effort for each game. The exhausting week-long training camp we had at the end of August contributed to getting our team off to a great start.” Team members are Aidan Koke, Luke Napolitano, Austin Mar- chese, Brett Hall, Joshua Nat, Joey McLeod, Connor Page, Hartley Russell, Karlo Cvetkovic-Rozas, Jonathan MacMillan, Stephen Mintsopoulos, Tony GionFriddo, Ben deVries, Aaron White, Grant Starr, Graham Reid, Sean Turnbull, while joining Nat on the coaching staff are Brian Hall, Bill Reid, Calvin Russell. The rest of the game didn’t go too well though as the Dolphins lost 56-6. SOCCER Five is the number for Ajax Local soccer club cleans up at Ontario Cup championships BY SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com AJAX -- To say Tom Croft is a happy man right now might be an understatement. The head coach of the Ajax Soccer Club certainly does have a good reason to smile as his club recently brought home five Ontario Cup championships, becoming only the second club in the history of the event to do so. The championships started rolling in a couple of weeks back with the U12 Venom boys, the U14 girls Strikers and the U16 Gunners each bringing home titles from the Ontario Soccer Association Centre in Vaughan. Two more soon followed. Just this past weekend the U13 boys Thunder and the U17 girls Storm won their champion- ship games, bringing the total to five, allowing Ajax to join Erin Mills in 2005 as the only club sto attain the feat. Croft, who is only in his first year as head coach of the club, was quick to spread the praise when speaking of the recent accomplishments. “These things don’t happen in one year. It’s a build-up of the last four or five years with these teams,” said Croft. “We have a very strong program ... Win- ning five in year is quite a feat. It takes a lot skills, a lot of time, a little bit of luck. All of that goes together.” What’s more, Croft figures with the groups of kids still coming up through the ranks, this won’t be the last time people see Ajax come out on top at Ontario Cup competitions. “Some of the teams coming on might even be better than some of the teams we have currently,” he said. “We have a pretty nice out- look for the future. We’re pret- ty happy about that. We don’t think it’s just going to be a one- year wonder with us. “We think we’re going to be pretty successful for the next five to 10 years.” To put this accomplishment into perspective, Croft pointed out that up until this year the club had only three Ontario Cup championships to it credit. “So in 39 years we had three and now in one year we have five. That’s pretty cool,” noted Croft. And the championships may not end there as two of the Cup- winning clubs will be heading off to the National Champion- ships next month. The girls U14 team will travel to Nova Scotia, while the boys U16 will compete in Manitoba. Croft also pointed out anoth- er local team, the Ajax United Magic girls’ team, which is not part of the Ajax Soccer Club, won an Ontario Cup and will travel with the ASC’s U16 boys to Nationals. Both tournaments take place Oct. 6-12. SOCCER Green Lightning golden at Ontario Cup VAUGHAN -- The Pickering Green Lightning U13 girls are tops in their division. The girls advanced to the Ontar- io Cup final at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan against the Oshawa Kicks and emerged as Cup champions following a hard- fought 1-0 victory. Afterwards, Pickering coach Vance Palache spoke glowingly about both his Lightning team and the rival Kicks squad. “The girls worked really, extremely hard this year improv- ing their soccer skills to make it this far and accomplish our goals,” he told OSA TV. “The Oshawa team, (they) are a fantastic team. It was great to see two Durham teams for a change who made it to the Ontario Cup (final). It’s really wonderful to see the devel- opment of Durham players.” Both teams came out playing a disciplined and direct game with few mistakes being made by either side. The teams were very evenly matched in the first half with the both defensive formations limit- ing the number of scoring chanc- es and by half time, neither side had managed to find the back of the net. The second half was a see-saw battle with both teams pressing for the go-ahead goal. As the clock ran down, both teams upped the pace and inten- sity, but no clear advantage was created by either side. It seemed this match would be decided by kicks from the penalty mark. But then, in the first of two min- utes extra time, a brilliant cross from the left side found the right foot of the Lightning’s Katie Arse- nault, who drilled the ball into the back of the net to give Pickering a 1-0 lead. Extra time expired soon after and Pickering was crowned the Ontario Cup champions. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 25, 200925 AP Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club 650 Lake Ridge Road South, Ajax (905) 426-GOLF (4653) www.carrutherscreekgolf.ca *Some conditions may apply. AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE Burke weighs in on Durham Region players BY BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- Brian Burke has long been associated with hard-nosed hockey, but as much as he likes to see his teams pugnacious, there’s something he prefers even more. Winning. It was that, in part, that attracted him to a couple of players who played with the Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires last sea- son. Burke, president and gen- eral manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was in Whitby for a RONA promotion Mon- day, and spoke of the rea- sons behind giving goalie Andrew Engelage and tough guy Richard Greenop, both of Oshawa, a shot to prove themselves in the organiza- tion. They, along with another Oshawa native in Ryan Ham- ilton and former Oshawa General Dale Mitchell, could be in the lineup as the Toron- to Marlies skate into the General Motors Centre next Wednesday for an American Hockey League exhibition game against Hamilton. On Tuesday, the Marlies announced the signing of Engelage, a 20-year-old who had never been drafted by an NHL team. “He’s a winner for one thing. Any time someone wins, that means they’ve done something,” Burke said of Engelage. “But also he’s big and has an excellent work ethic. We think he’s got a chance to be an NHL goal- tender for sure.” Engelage, who’s 6-foot-5 and 206 pounds, has cer- tainly become accustomed to winning. En route to backstopping the Spitfires to a national junior cham- pionship last season, he set an Ontario Hockey League record for wins with 46 in the regular season. He also had a 2.35 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. Although Greenop’s con- tributions were not quite as significant, the 6-foot-4, 235- pound winger is perfectly suited to Burke’s style. He was among the OHL’s most feared fighters while amass- ing 156 penalty minutes with Windsor last season. “He’s already a man even though he’s only 20 now,” Burke said of Greenop, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Chicago Black- hawks in 2007, but never signed by them. “He’s a big, strong man with a proper level of hostil- ity and belligerence for me. I think he’s going to play in the NHL. He’s got some work to do on his skating, but he’s a great kid and he works very hard. He’s as tough as they come.” Hamilton was also sup- posed to be in Whitby Mon- day, but was placed on waiv- ers by the Leafs that day. He cleared and was assigned to the AHL team, just before the Marlies left on a five-day trip to Scotland for an inter- national tournament. JASON LIEBREGTS/METROLAND WHITBY -- Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke made a visit to Durham Region earlier this week. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 25, 200930 AP Sunday, October 4, 2009 10:00 am, Lakeview Park, Oshawa Breast Friends Dragon Boat Racing Team We’re all connected.
